I'm back!!!/ROTE update

Ok hi I'm finally back after months of abandoning my Tumblr account! I'm so sorry, but work was just kicking my ass so bad and school was overwhelming. But I'm back!!!

So an update for my ROTE read through:

I finished the entire Rain Wild Chronicles since the last time I posted and it was...ok. Don't get me wrong it was better than a lot of fantasy books out there just because Robin Hobb can write so well. But compared to the other books it was...ok. I just found that there were characters and storylines that I didn't care about as much. For example, I LOVED Sedric's character arc from beginning to end (and I think he might be one of my favorite new characters along with Carson), but I got tired of Thymara's story and her wondering if she should pick Rapskal or Tats. And by the end I was upset with who she chose so it all felt like I went through it for nothing. I just wish it could've been simpler ya know? Alise was ok, but by Blood of Dragons I felt like she wasn't really relevant anymore. But I really liked Leftrin, he gave off chill uncle vibes. The Selden chapters and scenes were some of my favorite and I loved Chassim.

I think my favorite out of all 4 books was Dragon Haven, mostly because there was a lot more Sedric in that one probably lol. If you couldn't tell, I had the time of my life reading from Sedric's POV. Anytime he was mentioned my eyes were glued to the page lol.

But overall this series was fine, definitely not my favorite, just fine. And that's ok :)

And now onto the Fitz and The Fool trilogy!!! I'm so excited and nervous!!! Since my schedule is looking to be more free I will start doing daily updates like usual starting tomorrow, or whenever you see this I might have already started!!!

finished the Rain Wilds Chronicles and have many thoughts.

I saw online that a lot of people didn’t enjoy them as much as Robin Hobb’s other books, and I can’t say anything on that because I just picked this up at a bookstore and went for it (oops) so definitely read out of order, but I really enjoyed it anyway. The important relationships were fleshed out pretty well, the first two books and the river journey was a little unnecessarily long, but most of it was important for character development and world building, I liked the way the series ended a lot, and I enjoyed the fact that the dragons and their attitudes, especially Sintara’s, weren’t “fixed”. The keepers didn’t turn them morally good, as would have been the case in many other series.

Idk. Brain going crazy, and I enjoyed the series :)

The pole chair swayed as the bearers paced through the hallways of his palace. He counted his friends and his enemies and knew that some he counted belonged on both lists. His dear, loyal chancellor was one. And his loving, viperous vixen of a daughter was another. Thrice he had married Chassim off, hoping to be rid of her. Her first husband had left her a widow at fourteen. Barely three weeks after the sumptuous wedding, the man had slipped coming out of his bath and broken his neck. Or so all surmised at the time. There had been no witnesses to the accident. And his young widow, sallow-faced and hollow-eyed, had seemed appropriately mournful when his family had returned her to her father's home.

Her next husband had been a much younger man, scarcely thirty years older than his bride. He had lasted six months, succumbing to a stomach ailment that gave him debilitating cramps and bloody bowels. Again, the girl had been returned to the palace, and he had seen her silent and seething at her fate.

Her most recent spouse had died three years ago. The worthy old man had publicly slapped her over some lapse of manners. He had died before the day was out, subsiding in a frothy fit at the feast table among his warriors. Again, Chassim had been returned to him. This time, he had asked her directly. "Daughter, do you mourn your husband?"

To which she had replied, "I mourn how suddenly and swiftly death found him."

Loving someone isn't that crazy infatuation that you feel at first. That passes. Well, not passes, but it calms down, and then sometimes, when you least expect it, you get a glimpse of the person and it all comes back again, in a big rush. But even that's not what you're looking for. What you're looking for is the feeling that no matter what, being with that person is always going to be better than being without that person. Good times or bad. That having that person around makes whatever you're going through better, or at least more tolerable.

Grace has moved to Hong Kong with her Mom (and stepdad too). She’s on a field trip when a strange old woman gives Grace a dragon egg. That’s not going to come to anything right? Oh, wait, right… it definitely will. And, soon she does in fact realize the stories about dragons that she’s been told. Well, they’re real. The egg hatches, a dragon is born, and, suddenly she and her new friends have to protect the dragon because there are people who want to destroy and to use the dragon’s power. Can they save Hong Kong?

My favorite part of this graphic novel was definitely the characters (including the dragon). Since she’s going to an international school in Hong Kong, Grace’s friends were all different and fun, and even the secondary characters were interesting. I also loved the art in the book. It was nice and clean and just made the great story even better.

idk what I was expecting going into rain wild chronicles but it’s certainly wasn’t nuanced discussions of contract law!!!

this is why people think ttrpgs are weird
