Favorite fic: Words, Words, Words. I also really enjoy that conversation in Surely Not The Devil.
(I will say that in poking around your site, I found several I don’t know that I have read yet! So maybe I will have to revisit my answer.)
For the followers’ favourite fanfic of yours ask.
Thank you so much @cecilysass! They were fun stories to write. It's always very humbling when someone remembers some of my old stories from many many years ago. I appreciate you taking the time to answer!

Here are some very good fics with one or both of Doggett and Reyes and, usually, Scully and/or Mulder. ✖️✖️✖️✖️ 4x22 Elegy
The one where... the dying (including Scully 😭) see visions of the dead at a bowling alley.
Best: The way they weave the cancer arc into this MOTW episode is so well done. It really brings home the fact that Scully is dying - to us and to the characters. More on the therapy scene and their confrontation at the end of the episode below, but GA’s acting just phenomenal throughout.
Worst: Scully thinking mental illness = murderer is not a great look. Also the explanation on why the nurse was murdering those girls was kind of weak/glossed over (to make room for the meaty stuff between Mulder and Scully which is really the climax of the episode so I get it).

Rewatch Thoughts:
Cancer Arc Check-in: This one’s a doozy. Scully is dying.
Ok the cute moments first: Scully lying half on top of Mulder at the bowling alley; how impressed Scully is at Mulder’s bowling prowess; whispering at the back of the briefing room and getting called out on it.
Mulder’s soft oh Scully when he sees her nosebleed 😭
Scully says I’m fine FOUR TIMES this episode. When you need to say it that much you are not fine.
I love, love, love that they brought back her therapist Karen Kosseff from season 2’s Irresistible. Wish we’d seen her again in later seasons - these therapy sessions are so insightful and there is SO much I wish we’d gotten to see Scully open up about. Unclear whether Scully has been back to see her since season 2. Certainly not regularly - Scully tells her that she was diagnosed with cancer several months ago.
Why is it important to Scully to keep working? Mulder. His support. His passion. His strength. When her little chin wobbles as she gets emotional 😭. I feel Scully on how hard it is to articulate your feelings to someone. I can be very eloquent in my head and then when it comes time to speak, to be emotionally vulnerable, it’s so, so hard.
Karen Kosseff’s comment about her fear of failing Mulder is very interesting. In what way is she afraid of failing him? I think she would think of it as failing him if she left him alone - whether by leaving the X-Files, or being too sick to continue working, or even dying. She’s afraid to show him any weakness, even admitting her fear about what she saw, what it means about her health. She can’t be vulnerable with him like that. To relinquish control would be to admit defeat.
To Mulder hiding the truth from him is the only way she could fail him. And he’s being pretty righteous to yell at her about how that means she’s working against him and herself when we know he hasn’t told her about her ova - which means he’s hiding some truths that are pretty consequential to her health and as avenues of investigation into the source of her cancer. So pot calling the kettle black or whatever that saying is.
It’s so well done that they are both in the wrong in this confrontation. Scully’s wrong for hiding what she saw from him. And Mulder’s wrong (see the point above) for responding in a shitty way when clearly this is something that she’s scared to believe in and scared of the implications of. And they don’t really come to a resolution. Scully shutting down and leaving and then crying alone in her car is devastating.
Episode-Related Fanfic Recs:
Importuning Life for Life by Circe Invidiosa. Post-episode where Mulder drives her home. Very psychologically insightful. I love the way this author has Mulder examine his own motivations and reactions and make the choice to do something different.

For the fic prompts: M (When it rains/snows/storms) for Mulder
prompt fill for @lilydalexf from this post where I write a minific for the chosen prompt. Sorry it took me so long!
When It Rains
After Scully became his partner, Mulder had to accept that when it rained, he was inevitably going to get the runoff from her umbrella down his collar.  It was just the nature of their height difference. As they walked together or talked closely, her umbrella would dip under his and a stream of water would fall onto him.
It also meant that, if one of them forgot theirs, Mulder was the one holding the umbrella aloft between them and making sure they were both protected by it. If he held it too high, Scully would still get pelted; too low, he would be hunching over. And even though he had learned the skill early on, every now and then, he would still hold the umbrella just a little too high so that Scully would have to take his hand and gently correct him.
More often than not, Mulder forgot his umbrella.

IWTB fic
In honour of the 12th anniversary of the IWTB release, here is a fic I wrote 10 years ago (1 March 2010 to be precise):
Tumblr media
In a Graveyard by Circe Invidiosa Rating: PG-13 for the swears Disclaimer: I know the law, and the law would win.
Summary: He hated snow…Mulder attends a funeral. A post-I Want to Believe fic.
Keep reading it here or read it on: my fic site LJ
He hated snow, he decided. Considering the week he’d had, Mulder didn’t know why he hadn’t come to this conclusion before now. He watched the flakes begin to fall in bigger clumps, sticking to the casket in splotches.
The snow muffled the minister’s drone, making him sound like he was rooms away. Like when Mulder would hide in the linen closet when his parents had company over and they thought he was asleep, back before Samantha was born. He’d hoped to hear something he wasn’t supposed to hear. Why else would they send him to bed? But it always turned out to be boring adult talk. They didn’t even talk about him.
Mulder shook off the memory and the snow that had collected in his hair and tried to concentrate on what the minister was saying. But it was obvious the officiant knew Dakota Whitney about as well as he did. The trite platitudes, the words about faith and God’s will, seemed even more pointless to Mulder than usual.
He couldn’t give Scully an answer to why he was going to Dakota Whitney’s funeral. He didn’t know what he’d hoped for — meaning, absolution? None of that was here.
He’d stayed back, far enough away that he could scan the faces of the crowd. He’d recognized a few faces, older now, just as he was. No one would meet his eye except Drummy, who glared openly at him. Mulder wished he had a reason to glare back.
It was during this absurd staring contest that someone approached and stood next to Mulder. Walter Skinner didn’t even acknowledge when Mulder turned to see him, hands shoved into his overcoat pockets staring forward. But Mulder felt bolstered enough by his presence that he could forget about Drummy and his censure.
Mulder leaned toward Skinner. “Arlington, huh? How’d she score this kind of real estate?”
Skinner motioned his head to the older uniformed man who held the folded flag. “General Whitney.”
That explained a lot.
Mulder realized that he hadn’t really considered anything about this girl — woman. Christ, she was older than Scully had been when they’d first met. Obviously — far too obviously — Dakota Whitney had been interested in Mulder and had considered everything about him. He began to feel embarrassed for her, and for himself, remembering their final conversation, when she’d made a play for him.
Uncomfortable again, Mulder turned to Skinner to make his apologies and leave when Skinner said, “There was snow at your funeral, too.”
Well, fuck. Mulder knew that he hadn’t said it out of maliciousness, but maybe Skinner was making a point — he’d been to enough funerals and didn’t want to go to another of Mulder’s. Whatever Skinner’s reasons, it rooted Mulder to his spot.
Mulder changed the subject as fast as he could. “Did you know her?” He nodded toward the casket.
“Sorta. She came to me, before this case, wanting to know about you, about the X-Files. Pestered me every day for a month. Kept telling me it was all ‘off-the-record’.”
“What did you tell her?”
Skinner snorted. “I’m still an AD because I know there’s no such thing as ‘off-the-record’. And because I know when to leave something damn well alone. Last time she talked to me was last week. Came into my office and triumphantly told me she’d gotten approval to get you for consulting on some hot case, and thanks for nothing.”
Mulder smirked, remembering her tenacity. “I noticed she didn’t take no for an answer.”
“She didn’t get to be an ASAC by backing down.”
Mulder sighed. “Well, it got her killed. Bringing me back got her killed.”
Skinner shook his head. “You’re unbelievable. Isolation has actually made you more egotistical. You must’ve been a joy to live with these last six years.”
One thing Mulder knew was that regardless of how many times Skinner threw everything aside to help him, there was only one reason he did it: for Scully. And this was Mulder’s cue.
“Thanks for the chat and for the cuddle the other night, Walter. Drop by any time now that I’m not wanted.” Mulder started to back away.
Skinner rolled his eyes and walked past him, back down to the path. “Get over yourself, Mulder. There’s something here you need to see.”
Mulder took one last look at the snow-freckled coffin before he followed. They walked away to a gun salute.
———-
Skinner led the way. After a few minutes, he veered off the path and stopped in front of an unremarkable headstone. Unremarkable until Mulder read the name aloud: “Frohike.” Sure enough, Langly and Byers flanked him.
“Shit,” Mulder muttered. Scully had told him all about The Gunmen’s heroic deaths, but it never seemed real. Especially not with the spectral visits the boys occasionally had paid him.
Skinner pointed to the fresh flowers left at all three graves. “Jimmy, that kid who started following them around that last year, he visits every couple of weeks. Makes sure it looks like someone’s been here. That someone remembers what they meant.”
“I met him once. He was –” How could he put it delicately?
Skinner read his mind. “What he lacks in sense, he makes up for in eagerness. I thought their deaths would kill him. But he’s still putting out the paper. He still believes.”
Lucky kid.
Skinner bowed his head momentarily, paying his respects, before he cleared his throat. “I’ll give you some time alone here. I’ve gotta go make an appearance at the wake and do Assistant Director stuff. You can make it outta here okay?”
Mulder nodded. “I’ll just follow the breadcrumb trail I left.”
“Tell Scully I’ll be in touch,” Skinner said before he walked away.
Mulder knelt down by Frohike’s headstone. He didn’t have to wait long and was not startled when a voice spoke.
“I thought he’d never leave.” Langly appeared from behind a nearby tree.
“‘Bout time you showed up,” Frohike said as he stood up from behind his tombstone.
Mulder rolled his eyes and stood upright. “You might recall that up until very recently, I was wanted by the FBI for killing a marine. You even warned me to go on the run and not look back. So it would be a pretty stupid idea to just waltz into the largest armed forces cemetery. But thanks for understanding.”
Byers appeared from behind Mulder. “Don’t mind him, Mulder. The afterlife isn’t what he expected.”
Mulder chuckled. “What, all the great conspiracies didn’t just reveal themselves to you when the pearly gates opened?”
Langly was leaning on his own headstone. “Nah. He’s just got his panties in a twist because it turns out he’s just as bad at getting dead tail as he was at getting live tail.”
“At least I’m looking for girls! You’re just interested in other long haired dudes!” Frohike said.
Langly’s fist came down. “Joey Ramone is a GOD, not a dude!”
Mulder was getting fed up. “Guys! I’m here now. Not that you couldn’t have come to see me any time, you know, what with having shuffled off your mortal coils and all.”
Byers shrugged. “Mulder, even you think we’re figments of your impressive imagination. If you haven’t seen us lately, maybe you should ask yourself why.”
Mulder rubbed his forehead. “If you really are figments of my imagination, why haven’t you gotten any better looking?”
“Speak for yourself, Not-so-Grizzly-Adams,” Frohike said. “Did you shave just for us?”
“All right,” Byers intervened, his hands raised like a referee. “Mulder, we know why you came here today. We’re sorry about the girl, Agent Whitney. You and she seemed to work well with one another.”
“Too well,” Frohike interjected.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Mulder replied a little too defensively.
Langly sighed. “Don’t get him started.”
Frohike waved him off. “Too late!” He turned to Mulder. “Running off with this young chickie, Mulder, just because she’s all into the paranormal? When you’ve got the luscious Dana Scully waiting at home? What are you thinking?”
Mulder turned away. “It wasn’t like that –”
“It never is,” Byers said, to Mulder’s surprise. “And that wasn’t our point, Mulder. It’s not your feelings for Agent — Doctor Scully — that are the problem. It’s where your relationship stands now that you’re free.”
Mulder replied. “Look, Scully knows where we stand –”
“Does she?” Frohike asked.
Mulder threw his arms up. “Of course she does. How could she not?”
“Have you actually told her, Mulder?” Byers asked.
“Yeah, that really seems to be a bit of a foreign concept for you two,” Langly said.
“Think about how ready was she to give up on you when you went into crazy investigator mode.” Frohike said. Don’t give up. Maybe it was Mulder that Father Joe had been referring to all along when he said that to Scully. Frohike added, “Does that seem like a person who knows where they stand?”
But I can tell you that I won’t be coming home. Mulder had just chalked it up to Scully having a passive aggressive tantrum for not getting her way. He hadn’t understood a single thing she said that night. He still didn’t.
“She doesn’t need to worry. We’ve been together for years now.”
“Only because you didn’t have a choice. You were in hiding. You had to rely on her,” Byers said.
“Maybe she thinks she’s a placeholder. Just good enough for now until you were able to get back to what you love doing,” Langly added.
Frohike shook his head. “Lemme tell you something. I ever had a woman half as smart, sophisticated, and hot as Dana Scully, she’d never have to guess what she meant to me.”
Langly laughed. “Like that would ever be a possibility. She’d have to be half as tall, too.” Frohike made a hand gesture at Langly.
Byers interrupted, bringing them back to the matter at hand. “The point is, Mulder, whatever you end up doing now that you’re a free man, you have to let Dr. Scully know where she stands.”
“Ditchin’ her ain’t an option any more, man,” Langly said, adding, “Even if you are pissed at her.”
Frohike rubbed his hands together. “All she’d have to do is open up that top button and I wouldn’t be mad at her any more.”
Mulder pointed at Frohike in warning. “That’s far enough, Melvin. You’re talking about the mother of my son there.”
Byers said, “You know, that’s another thing we should probably talk about.”
Mulder stooped and picked up a bouquet of flowers from Frohike’s grave. “Not today, boys.”
Frohike stepped forward. “Hey! Jimmy just gave me those!”
Mulder shrugged. “It’s for a good cause, Melvin. ‘Sides, you really wanna go around yelling that a dude left you these?”
Frohike grimaced. “Touché. Tell her we said hi?”
“Not on your life,” Mulder said.
Langly walked up to stand beside Frohike. “Considering we don’t have lives, that means absolutely nothing.”
“Yeah, yeah. I’ll be back. I’ll bring you something nice.”
“Scully would be nice,” Frohike said.
“You can’t win, Frohike,” Mulder said. “You don’t even have a body.”
“Don’t rub it in, Mulder,” Byers said, now standing on the other side of Frohike. “You don’t have to spend eternity with him.”
“No, I don’t,” Mulder said, walking back down to the path, “I have to make sure I’m spending it with someone else. Thanks guys.”
When Mulder turned back to wave, they were gone.

Writer ask game: 💜 💬 👀
From the Writer Ask Game post:
💜- top 3 favorite lines
1. From my XF story “Importuning Life for Life” (a post-ep fic for Elegy, smack in the middle of the Cancer Arc) :
“I know I’m dying, Mulder. If you think I haven’t come to terms with that, then you’ve forgotten who I am. What I haven’t come to terms with is where this will leave you when I’m gone, and everything I won’t be able to do or be for you.”
2. From my VM story “Stay Outta Riverdale” (whose title always makes me giggle…anyway, V has just revealed she believes Logan is being physically abused):
If this was the other shoe he was waiting for, it turned out to be a boot. But what he didn’t expect from a revelation like this was that she’d just let it fall and let it stay there. No, if anything, he was expecting her to pick it up, dust it off, admire it, pull it on and gleefully kick his ass with it. He would have done it to her without hesitation.
3. From my VM-Sherlock Crossover “Damsel in Distrust”…I was ridiculously really pleased with myself over the description of Jake Kane’s London offices:
Kane Software’s London location was located in the upper floors of a trendy glass office tower. These newer buildings provided a tremendous view of the city. But despite making these buildings geometrical wonders, they were impersonal and faceless on the inside. Trading glass for concrete just let the people inside know what they were missing.
Even so, this high up, how could they even tell what they were missing? Viewing London from above didn’t tell you anything about London other than what it looked like from outside. No, if you wanted to know London, really know it, you needed to be in London, on the ground, where pomp, pretension, and economy lived in the same street; where you were confronted with history and modernity, with a constant griminess, and a press of humanity all at once. Down there, that’s where the real London happened. Up here was for people who wanted to have the luxury of saying they were here but not have to deal with the real messiness of being in the city. See but not touch or hear or smell.
Jake Kane’s office was shinier, but just as impersonal as the rest of this floor, with a sterile white and grey colour scheme. Glass and metal everywhere. If you tried to look too deeply at anything in the room, you were met with a reflection of yourself. It was all designed to unnerve.
💬- describe one of your completed works in three words
For “Slap a Goatee on Me and Call Me Evil”: doppelgangers do it
👀- favorite response to one of your works
Any comments that tell me they can actually hear the character saying the lines. I did my job then. Lately comments being left on some of my old VM stories are telling me that my fic is helping them get over Season 4. So that’s pretty flattering.
Thanks for asking!

The Discount Aisle
Here’s a post-Valentine’s ficlet I wrote (yikes) 14 years ago...
Title: The Discount Aisle Author: Circe Invidiosa Notes: Written for Believe The Truth's Valentine's Day Challenge 2005
In a week, it would be her birthday. She suddenly realized that when she walked down the aisle engulfed with heavily-discounted Valentine's Day trappings. As much as she didn't buy into birthdays or the fabricated holiday anymore, they still served to remind her that she was alone, unless she counted her work and her partner. Normally, she didn't.
She asked to stop at the pharmacy so she could get something for her headache. He asked her to bring him back a snack. She smiled as she tried to imagine the expression on his face if she brought him back a heart-shaped box of chocolates. She wondered if he would blush or make a teasing, innuendo-laden comment. Then wondered if she in turn would dismiss him by saying it was on sale or lead him into a dangerously flirtatious exchange.
Reaching for the largest floral patterned box, she thought, only one way to find out.

XF Ficlet: Make It Worse (MSR)
a prompt fill for @cinderella819 who chose MSR and #32 (“I think I’m in love with you and I’m terrified.”) from this post.  Enjoy the angstfest, my friend!
Read below or on AO3.
Mulder was still holding her when Scully tensed in his arms, signifying that she'd let her mind drift to something even more unpleasant. "What did you mean," she asked, "when you said that you wouldn't want it to come between us?"
"Hmmm?" he murmured, still rubbing her back lazily, hoping he could lull her back into complacency.
It didn't work. She pushed back and looked up at him. "When you came to tell me your answer, you said that you wouldn't want it to come between us."
He shrugged. "You said you understood. When I said it, you said you got it."
She pulled away and crossed her arms. "Yes, but that was when I thought you were saying no. In the context of you saying yes, it makes no sense."
"I told you it sounded weird. I – I just – It was what I was feeling at the time, okay? I can't explain it."
"Can you try?"
He shook his head. "I don't want to argue, Scully. Not tonight, okay? Can we just drop this for tonight?"
She turned away and began forcefully to rearrange the cushions on the couch where he'd just been lying. "No, no, you're right. Let's spread all our hurt feelings out rather than getting it all out in the open."
"I know what you're doing," he said, keeping his voice soft, knowing it wouldn't help to get as agitated as she was.
"What?" She turned, anger flashing in her eyes. "What am I doing? Trying to make sure I understand your motivations for something that isn't even going to happen now?"
"You want me to say something that's going to make this worse. You want to be able to be angry at me, rather than at the injustice of it all because I'm easier to be angry at. You probably already were if you think about it."
When he could see the argument dissolve from her face, he took the cushion still in her hands and tossed it on the ground, then he sat, pulling her down to the couch with him.
A tear escaped down her cheek. "And what could possibly make it worse?"
He reached out and wiped the tear away. Might as well go for broke. If she wanted it all out in the open, then he'd give her something to really sink her teeth into.  "How about 'I think I'm in love with you, and I'm terrified'?"
She burst out with a laugh. "Bullshit."
He blinked, pulling his hand back. He didn't expect that kind of a reaction. "What the hell do you mean by that?"
"I mean, there's no thinking about it, Mulder. Not with you. You are a god damned Oxford educated psychologist and you just picked apart why I was starting a fight with you. You don't have to guess. You either are or you're not. But terrified? Yeah, terrified, I will give you. And stop trying to change the subject. I know what you're trying to do, too."
He raised an eyebrow, unsure whether he should be impressed with her deduction or affronted. "And what's that?"
She sniffled. "Give me a reason not to give up."
He couldn't help a small grin. At least she wasn't denying him outright. "Is it working?"
"Maybe." She didn't return his smile. She nudged his knee. "Tell me what you meant."
He sighed. "Fine. This." He motioned a finger back and forth between them.  "This exact scenario. If I said yes, and we went through with it and it didn't work. It would affect us in ways we wouldn't be able to get past."
"You think I won't survive this?" She narrowed her eyes at him, as though waiting for him to say the wrong thing.
"No, I know you will. But you will shut off a part of yourself and I will never get it back. So, you see, another reason for me to be terrified."
"Even if – it wouldn't –you – you don't understand." She let her head fall into her hands.
He took hold of her wrist and turned her to face him. "You're acting like I didn't say yes. I'll admit it was cautious, but it was a still a resounding yes, Scully. I wanted this as much as you did."
She nodded. "Okay. You're right. But it wouldn't -- "
"Wouldn't it? What did you think was going to happen? I'd be Uncle Mulder, Mommy's work friend? Never see them except on Bring Your Kid to Work day?"
She shrugged. "We hadn't discussed your involvement."
"Consider it discussed now then. Involved. Completely and utterly. All in."
She nodded again, closing her eyes to thwart the tears threatening to spill. She stretched out her arms and pulled him into an embrace.
"Thank you," she said into his ear, "but it doesn't even matter now. Last chance, remember?"
"Doesn't it?" he asked, tightening his hold on her. "I'm terrified, remember? Don't make me repeat why."
"I remember," she said, pressing a kiss to his cheek. "For what it's worth, I'm terrified too."

Friday, September, Ancient
@doctorhelena‘s asks for this post.
friday: most self-indulgent fic you have ever posted?
Hmmm. Self-indulgent? I don’t know. All of them technically because they were all what I wished would happen. I think there’s a scene in Damn, Damn the Circumstance where I mention some very specific knowledge that has to do with my real life job. If you don’t know what I do, then you’d just think, ‘oh she really researched that’. There were a bunch of badfic challenges on Scullyfic back in the day that felt really indulgent. I think they may be lost now or somewhere on Wayback. Someday I will fix my website and I’ll be able to point to them again.
september: share a comment or review which still warms your heart?
All of them! I know. Such a cop-out. I get a lot of comments on DDtC asking me to finish it, which is very sweet that something I haven’t updated in years still has people clamoring for more. I really like the comments on my cross-over fics Damsel in Distrust (VM and Sherlock) and Dead to Rights (XF and Dead Like Me) because it meant I wrote a plausible story for both fandoms, (at least for those commenters). But I don’t remember most of them offhand. I only remember the ones where people were really mad at me or hypercritical.
ancient: the first fic you ever posted online?
Oh it was a terrible XF fic. It was a post-all things story, At This Late Hour. I put it on Ephemeral and all the positive comments I got back were such a thrill, I wrote some more terrible post-ep fics. And here we are today.

First Lines Meme
RULES: List the first lines of the last ten stories you published/updated. Look to see if there are any patterns that you notice yourself, and see if anyone else notices any! Then tag some friends.
I was tagged by @doctorhelena
So I’m a weirdo and publish under two author names - Circe Invidiosa for X-Files and Invida for Veronica Mars. I thought I had good reasons at the time, but they seem dumb now. Below are my last 10 fics under both names, sorted chronologically with most recent first.
1. Get Your Kicks by Invida - (VM) - published Sept 2018 "Remind me why I'm doing this?" Logan asked, following Veronica around the gift shop as she picked up items and gave them a once-over.
2. Make It Worse by Circe Invidiosa  - (XF) - published Aug 2018 Mulder was still holding her when Scully tensed in his arms, signifying that she'd let her mind drift to something even more unpleasant.
3. Slap a Goatee on Me and Call Me Evil by Circe Invidiosa - (XF) - published April 2018 She materialized in the bathroom, where she sensed his evil side was waiting to make his own appearance.
4. A Damsel in Distrust by Invida - (a VM crossover fic with BBC Sherlock) - WIP last updated Dec 2015 “I want her gone, John.”
5. Damn, Damn the Circumstance by Invida - (VM) - WIP last updated Dec 2014 "This room's occupied!"
6. In a Graveyard by Circe Invidiosa - (XF) - published March 2010 He hated snow, he decided.
7. Let Sleeping Dogs Lie by Circe Invidiosa & Helen Quilley - (XF) - published Jan 2010 Mulder tapped his fingers impatiently on the counter as Scully cooed to the tiny beast inside the travel kennel.
8. Champagne for My Real Friends by Invida - (VM) - published Oct 2009 on LJ (went to AO3 in the great fic dump of 2014) Veronica flopped down beside Logan who was lying on the beach still holding the champagne bottle he'd wrestled from Duncan.
9. Importuning Life for Life by Circe Invidiosa - (XF) published May 2008 Mulder leaned against the ramp’s railing.
10. is a tie between Surely Not the Devil by Circe Invidiosa - (XF) The sound of rustling cellophane startled Mulder.
and Stay Outta Riverdale by Invida (VM) which were both published within the same week of each other in June 2006 (this one was published first on LJ and went to AO3 in 2014) If looks could kill, then he was surely going to die of laughter if he continued to hang around Veronica Mars.
What have I learned?:
- I don’t often start with dialogue, which is surprising because I think I mostly write dialogue. - However, both my WIPs start with dialogue. - except for one, my XF fics mention Mulder by name and they are from his point of view. - two of my fill-in-the-blanks fics deal with continuing flashbacks within episodes (Make It Worse... and Champagne...). - my fill-in-the-blanks fics tend to start with describing the last action the character was doing in the scene in the episode. - Until 2015, I had been pretty consistent with writing. It looks like there isn’t a lot between 2010 and 2014 but I had two WIPS being updated during that time period (Damsel... started in 2013 and last updated in 2015 and Damn, Damn... started in (holy crap!) 2006 and last updated in 2014).
Tagging: @lilydalexf, @thatgirlnevershutsup, @rozf, @lucyemers, @kmd0107, (unless you’ve all already done this) and anybody who’d like to do this.

Slap a Goatee On Me and Call Me Evil
Title: Slap a Goatee on Me and Call Me Evil Author: Circe Invidiosa ( @invidiosa ) Rating: Teen. I think there's a swear or two in there. Word Count: 1460 Disclaimer: I know the law, and the law would win. Summary: Evil is as evil does...Plus One fill-in scene. Notes: It’s been 8 years since I’ve posted an XF fic. My old buddy, Rain (aka @doctorhelena) challenged me to a Trope-Off for Season 11. She asked that I write a "trapped together" story. Probably not what you had in mind, nonetheless, this one is for you, my friend. Acknowledgements: Thanks to Audrey Roget for the beta.
Read it here.

Old School X is a project interviewing X-Files fanfic authors who were posting fic during the original run of the show. New interviews are posted every Tuesday.
Interview with Circe Invidiosa
Circe Invidiosa has 11 stories at Gossamer, but there are even more X-Files stories at her website. Some of my favs I’ve recced here before, like Make It Worse and Slap a Goatee On Me and Call Me Evil. She also made a bunch of X-Files collage art, including some cover art for fics (hers and others), which you probably saw if you were reading fic back when authors posted fics on their own websites where art could be shared. Big thanks to Circe Invidiosa for doing this interview.
Does it surprise you that people are still interested in reading your X-Files fanfics and others that were posted during the original run of the show (1993-2002)?
Well, it would surprise me if people did read my fic. As it happens, I don't hear much feedback from my fic these days. Probably because the bulk of it is on Gossamer and my own site rather than AO3. Also, I was never a BNA. I worked a lot behind the scenes – hosting other authors' sites and making fanart and dustjackets. I think that's what I'd be remembered for, if anything.
What do you think of when you think about your X-Files fandom experience?
I miss the collective excitement and discussions we had as groups. When you got in with a group in the XF fandom, you felt like you knew everybody there. Now the fandom feels a little faceless except for the people I still follow from my old groups.
Social media didn't really exist during the show's original run. How were you most involved with the X-Files online (atxc, message board, email mailing list, etc.)?
Most of my experience was on Yahoo Groups. I joined Scullyfic while it was still there and then E-muse when it became an e-mail list, which I'm still a part of. I was part of several Yahoo Groups (can't remember all of them now), where I'd post my fic, RealPlayer slideshows (remember those?!), and collages. I never really took part in discourse because I'm shy and don't think anyone cares about my opinions (still don't!). The e-mail address I used for those groups was purged a couple of years ago, so I've lost all those messages.
What did you take away from your experience with X-Files fic or with the fandom in general?
My take away is that fanfic made me a better writer, thanks to having some great betas, and it made me a better professional writer for it (my real-life work is writing but not fun writing) because I learned to take criticism.
I also used to make a lot of fanart, collages and dustjackets for fic mostly. My big take away from that was that I really got into graphics and I got super proficient at Photoshop, which helped my own artistic endeavours and photography. I didn't realize how much skill I had developed until I've had to help someone with their graphics or photo editing.
What was it that got you hooked on the X-Files as a show?
My mother was watching X-Files before I was and she was raving about it. I don't have a great relationship with my mom, but one thing she was usually right about was TV shows. It's where I got my love of Sci-Fi.
I think the first episode I watched was Ice, which definitely hooked me. As for when the shipping started, I remember we were watching Lazarus, and when Mulder was yelling at Lula (I had to look that up) about hurting the hostage Scully, my mom said, "Oh, he's so in love with her." And I was all, "What?! Pfff." But then I could not stop thinking about it. And then I thought about it way, way too much.
What got you involved with X-Files fanfic?
I was in my late 20s, and it was around the end of S7 and I kept thinking about what if these two dumb idiots actually talked one day. And I kept thinking about dialogue in my head about what they'd actually say. The internet was still in its infancy back then, but I'd seen fan sites here and there. So I decided to search around to see if other people were talking about it and thinking about it like I was. I was such a noob I'd never even heard of fanfic. Imagine my delight when I discovered it. I found a few stories and thought, 'Well, I can do that.' And I wrote up my first story, found a place to post it (wasn't Ephemeral the best?), got some kind feedback, found a really nice person (not sure she wants to be named since she used her real name in the fandom back in the day) who encouraged me a lot and directed me to all the e-mail lists and Yahoo Groups that I needed to be on, and then, Bob's your uncle, I wrote more and more.
What is your relationship like now to X-Files fandom?
Periphery. Most of my experience in any fandom is now on Tumblr because that's where my attention span is. Show me pretty pictures and funny stuff. I am old now and don't want to think hard.
Were you involved with any fandoms after the X-Files? If so, what was it like compared to X-Files?
Veronica Mars was my next fandom experience. A number of my XF friends got me hooked on VM. The VM fandom was a LOT younger compared to the XF fandom. When I joined the XF fandom, I was the kid compared to most of the other fans who were all goddesses and royalty in my eyes. But in the VM fandom, I was in my 30s and the rest of the fandom were all in their early 20s if not younger. It often showed, so I stayed out of discussions and just posted my fic once I started writing it. I took a new handle (invida) when I started writing VM fic. Just in case these kids felt like my writing sucked, I didn't want it getting back to the XF fandom that I’d branched out and failed spectacularly.
By then fandom experiences had moved over to LiveJournal. I never really got involved in the discourse or the fandom fights. I knew what people were saying and where the schisms were, but I was all about the fanfic and the pretty pictures. Most of my LJ friends just discussed the episodes and posted their fic and that was good with me.
What got me writing fic for VM was Anjou's brilliant VM fic Into the Blue. Seriously, if you love VM S1, read her fic. Just so beautiful.
VM was also where started writing a WIP, which was a wild trip. I wrote a much-loved WIP called Damn, Damn the Circumstance which people still ask me about finishing to this day. Someday…*wistful sighs*
Who are some of your favorite fictional characters? Why?
Scully. She was everything! Lapsed Catholic, degrees in science, skeptic, always trying to work within the rules but still not taking crap. Yeah, she was the best.
Veronica Mars was great until she wasn't. I have a lot of issues with her beyond S2. And don't even talk to me about S4. For me, S1 was the best, I enjoyed the movie, the books were okay, but nothing else happened after that. NOTHING.
And the first character I ever loved was Princess Leia. She was also everything to me growing up. I wanted to be her. I still do.
Do you ever still watch The X-Files or think about Mulder and Scully?
Now and then. Not as much as I used to. I sometimes have it on in the background when I'm doing other things. Back before the pandemic, my BFF and I would have get togethers where we would play Scrabble, eat a lot of candy, and binge several XF episodes. I miss doing that. Hopefully, we will get back to that soon.
Do you ever still read X-Files fic? Fic in another fandom?
I am not an active XF fanfic reader right now. I will read any stories my friends put out. Otherwise, I only occasionally read some I come across on Tumblr in my feed, but I am not seeking them out. I will beta for any XF author who asks me as well.
I am reading fic in other fandoms though – Endeavour, Broadchurch, Sherlock…huh, I'm just realizing that's a lot of British stuff. I have been really into British detective series for the last few years.
Do you have any favorite X-Files fanfic stories or authors?
I used to run an XF fic recommendation site called How Will It End usually with at least one other person (I went through at least 4 partners on that project because I'm a control freak). We'd compile our recs and then I'd post them on my site. We'd also feature authors we really liked and interview them. Not unlike these interviews!
I'm terrible at giving feedback/comments. So I solved that problem by making a rec site. That way I could tell authors I loved their fics by recommending them. I didn't have to comment, I'd just say, 'I'd like to rec your fic'. And then they'd get promotion. Win-win. Back in those days, the fandom would absolutely roast you for promoting your own fic, so to get on a rec site was a big deal. Not that I had a popular rec site or anything. But I think authors really enjoyed being asked.
All that to say I've liked a lot of fics. I can pull up the archives of HWIE and show you all the faves I liked. :)
What is your favorite of your own fics, X-Files and/or otherwise?
Back in the day, E-muse would hold Improv Challenges, where other members would give you a prompt that you had to include in your fic. I was always really proud of the stories I created from those challenges (No Earthly Means and Elephant in the Room if you want to read them).
I enjoyed writing Dead to Rights which is an XF/Dead Like Me crossover because I loved the challenge of writing a crossover. It was the first crossover I ever tried writing even though I only recently published it.
Otherwise, I like re-reading In a Graveyard, Importuning Life for Life, and Some By Virtue Fall. Of my more recent fic, I like Slap a Goatee on Me and Call Me Evil because the premise was ridiculous and I think it's funny as all get out.
Probably my favourite of my VM fic was Stay Outta Riverdale. Because: 1. The title is a Simpsons reference who doesn't love a Simpsons reference? And 2. I think I was hilarious throughout it.
Do you think you'll ever write another X-Files story? Or dust off and post an oldie that for whatever reason never made it online?
I'm always open to writing more fic (and, of course, I don't mean my WIPs…don't look at me like that). Lately, my only motivation has been from writing prompts on Tumblr. I haven't had anyone give me a prompt in over a year, so here we are. I have snippets of dialogue in journals and word documents that have never found their way into stories. I'd be happy to dust off any of those and shoehorn them into a new story.
Do you still write fic now? Or other creative work?
The last fanfic I wrote was a mini-fic over a year ago (with a prompt from Lilydale!). I've written a bit of original fiction but I haven't been able to finish it. Otherwise, I do have a number of real life hobbies which are where my creative outlets lie now.
Where do you get ideas for stories?
Lately, challenges and prompts. It used to be from wanting to see more from a scene. I really had a thing for fill-in-the-blanks or scene continuations. And sometimes my motivation is just plain old spite. :)
What's the story behind your pen name?
Circe Invidiosa is the title of a painting by John William Waterhouse. Love the colours and the absolute malice on the face of the subject. It felt like a good pen name – the envious witch. That's me!
I chose it when I posted my first XF fic (which I cringe to read now, ugh so terrible) without knowing there was already a Circe in the fandom. Whoops. I tried to go by the full Circe Invidiosa or Invidiosa as much as possible after realizing that (invidiosa is my url and my username on a lot of sites, etc.). Now I think that I've been around long enough that it doesn't matter as much but I still like it.
As I said, I took the name Invida for the VM fandom which is just a shortening of Invidiosa.
Do your friends and family know about your fic and, if so, what have been their reactions?
My significant other knows and that was quite a reveal (oh how awkward). However, the SO has been very supportive and has read all my stories since the reveal and sometimes betas them. The SO also wants us to collaborate on writing some original fiction but we haven't found a project that works for both of us creatively or timewise.
My BFF knows because I dragged her into the online fandom. We've known each other since we were 14, but our love of XF really solidified our bond in our 20s. She wrote some short but sweet fics under the penname Helen Quilley which I bullied her into posting, and we wrote Of Ladies Most Deject and Wretched together. She is mostly embarrassed that she wrote fanfic now but we still fangirl together.
No one else really knows other than fandom folks I've met in real life. And some friends know I've written 'short stories' but I don't elaborate. I work in a stodgy, uptight industry where anything fun or actually having a life is frowned upon.
Is there a place online (tumblr, twitter, AO3, etc.) where people can find you and/or your stories now?
Over the first lockdown, I got my shit together and got my fic site, invidiosa.com, up and running again. My site houses fic by Rain (now @doctorhelena on Tumblr and AO3), Helen Quilley, ML (who I miss so much), Folieadeux, Shelba, TLynn, Oracle, Piper Sargasso, Diehard, and me. And I made all their dustjackets (except Folie's). The site got hacked a few years back and it was so much work to get running again that I put it off for years and years. I still feel terrible that I did not get the site back up before ML passed away, especially when ML had asked me about it a few months before she passed.
Anyway, all my XF fic is here: circe.invidiosa.com. I have 3 of my newer XF stories on AO3. And my fic-LJ also has some of my stories. Some of the newer stories are on Tumblr but the tagging is so erratic that I'd have to list several tags before you'd find them all. I don't know why I haven't moved everything over to AO3. Probably laziness.
I'm @invidiosa on Tumblr. I'm still on E-muse. I'm still on LJ. I'm always reachable by e-mail (invidiosa at gmail).
Is there anything else you'd like to share with fans of X-Files fic?
Thanks for reading, writing, and commenting. It is always appreciated.

34 and 97 please!
finally answering @minuete-blog‘s ask for the angst/fluff prompts post.  Sorry it took so long!
Prompts: “Please don’t do this.“ and “It’s not that easy.” I went fluffy rather than angsty…
“Oh my God, Mulder. Please don’t do this.”
Scully rested her forehead in her palm. She was not going togive Mulder the satisfaction of glaring at him.
“C'mon, Scully,” Mulder pleaded, nudging her elbowwith the small box he was presenting to her. “You heard the SAC.”  He tapped his earpiece for emphasis.  "She asked for a distraction. They’reclosing in.“
She slammed her hand down on the table, rattling thesilverware and dishes. "And this is the best you could come up with?”
Mulder glanced around the restaurant from his kneelingposition. “Well, it’s working. Everyone’s looking at us. And the perp ismaking his move. Play along.”
Scully shook her head and hissed, “It’s not that easy–”
“Sure it is. Just say yes.”
She turned to him now, her eyes wide. “How is sayingyes –”
Mulder jumped up with a triumphant fist pump. “She saidyes!”
Applause broke out all around the restaurant. He picked upher left hand and jammed the ring he’d been presenting to her on her finger.  Of course it was a perfect god damnedfit.
Before she could come up with any retort, all the doors tothe restaurant burst open and the SWAT teams swarmed the perp. Still holdingher hand, Mulder pulled Scully up from her chair and led her away from thechaos.
They made their way through the barricades. Standing among theother agents on the taskforce, they watched the takedown, waiting to see ifthey would have to give any kind of statements or make any reports.
“So did you requisition a ring prop or do you justhappen to carry these things around in case these stakeouts need adistraction?” she asked, fiddling with the ring. It was pretty and, shehad to admit, it suited her.
“Not a prop. But yeah, I just happened to be carryingthat ring around with me for a while now.”
She stared at him, so many questions she knew he wanted herto ask. How long? Why now? Instead, she just said, “Lucky thing.”
She started trying to wiggle the ring off. He grabbed herhand to stop her. “Luckier still if you actually say yes.”
She pulled her hand back and turned away from him. “Mulder, this isn’t funny.”
He shrugged. “It’s a little bit funny.”
She turned to give him a dirty look.  "We can’t just –"
“We can just.We can do anything we freakin’ want. We’re adults, not beholden to anyone butourselves. We’ve got a kid on the way. I want to do the marriage thing thistime around. And I want a good story for the spawn when she asks how it all happened.”
Scully’s hand went instinctively to her abdomen. As shespread her fingers, the ring’s stone caught the flashing police lights. Itwasn’t a disagreeable sight.
“Stop calling her that and I’ll think about it.”
He laughed and looped an arm around her shoulders. “I toldyou, I’ve thought of a perfectly good name –”
“Let me tell you where you are going to wear this ring if you think I’m naming my daughterMelvina.”

7 (for the micro story ask)
Answering @doctorhelena‘s ask for this post. The prompt is “silent fury”:
Scully hurled the report into the trash can and dropped down onto the chair in front of Mulder’s desk. “They ask me to debunk your work, and then when I can’t do that, they just redact everything? And you want me to just sit here in silent fury and just take it?”
“No, I want you to get back out there with me, do our jobs, and write even more reports, and make even more noise. Show them they can’t suppress the truth just using a magic marker.” As he spoke, he handed her a new case file.
Mulder leaned back, watching her intently as she read about their new assignment. He delighted as her eyes widened, knowing that she was reacting to the reason it was an X-File.
“I’ll go requisition a car,” she said as she stood. She was still reading the file as she moved to the door.
“Just so you know, Scully,” he said, prompting her to turn back, “there’s nothing silent about your fury, and I wouldn’t want it any other way.”

Fanfic asks: 5, 33, 45
Answering @doctorhelena‘s asks for this post:
5) If you had to choose a favourite out of all of your multi chaptered stories, which would it be and why?
For XF, it would have to be No Earthly Means. I mean, we didn’t have chapters back then. We had to send it out in parts to Ephemeral and I didn’t even really have clear breaks for the parts. This was a Scullyfic Improv piece where people on the list sent you prompts that had to be included in the story. Anyway, it was the longest XF fic I’d ever written and it was fun to fit in the prompts I was given.
For Veronica Mars, I only have two multi-chaptered fics and their both my favourites for different reasons:
Damn, Damn the Circumstance came about with a What If premise of Logan not leaving Shelly Pomroy’s party and finding Veronica in the room with Beaver. and within 2 weeks I’d written 4 chapters. It was so fun to explore an AU but still bring in canon as much as possible. I slowed down a lot after chapter 10 and now it’s been sitting there waiting for chapter 18 for 4.5 years now. The problem is, I outlined up to a point and then I had no idea how I was going to end it. Still don’t.
A Damsel in Distrust was born out of a challenge. A guy I worked with found out I was a big tv nerd and floated the idea of a Sherlock/Veronica Mars crossover.  I was telling another friend about the idea and she pooh-poohed it, saying it couldn’t be done. That got my nose out of joint and I was all, Oh yeah. Watch me.  It had a lot of steam at first but then I let the plot get away from me and it’s all tangled up in my head and more complicated than I’d hoped. I can’t figure out what direction I want it to go so it’s sat for 3.5 years now waiting for chapter 7.
33) What’s the biggest compliment you’ve gotten?
Funny how I don’t remember specific compliments, but, boy, do I remember the negative feedback I’ve received. The best compliments are the ones where people tell me that my dialogue is spot on, that they could totally hear the characters saying what I have them saying. My stories are dialogue heavy so it’s really important to me that I capture the voices.
45) What spurs you on during the writing process?
Lately, asking for and filling prompt requests have helped.  Usually though, it’s thinking up some great lines of dialogue and then making them fit into whatever story/chapter I’m writing.
Thanks for asking!
