soviet bus stops photographed by christopher herwig
"Architecture, like anything else during the Soviet period, was under strict centralized supervision. While art and grand monuments were expected to advance the state narrative of communism as paradise on earth, sometimes the benign bus stops were overlooked. As a result, hundreds of architecturally distinctive bus stops are now scattered across the former Soviet Republic. Built by individuals who decided to follow their own artistic urges, they found a way of expressing local and artistic ideas, in this small form. Their bus stops were built as quiet acts of creativity against overwhelming state control."

Soviet Bus Stops (dir. Kristoffer Hegnsvad) x VIFF 2022.
Canadian photographer Christopher Herwig had a clear goal for his entirely earnest art project. He aimed to photograph as many unique bus stops from former Soviet Republics in the 1960-70s as possible before they disappear and record them as relics of another time. Unlike the usual Soviet Bloc architecture of blandly oppressive and utilitarian aesthetics, these unusual public fixtures were creatively audacious in their colourful whimsy going against the Communist doctrine. Hegnsvag and Herwig manage to capture an intersection of art, history, design, and politics sublimely by simply preserving the memory of these works as images like a sort of archival time capsule.
Screened at the 2022 Vancouver International Film Festival as part of the Portraits series and streaming through VIFF Connect until Oct. 9 (and screening at the VIFF Centre on Oct. 12).

10% goes to the British Red Cross Ukraine Crisis Appeal.
After the popular and critical success of his first book, Christopher Herwig has returned to the former Soviet Union to hunt for more Soviet Bus Stops. In this second volume, as well as discovering unexpected examples in the remotest areas of Georgia and Ukraine, Herwig turns his camera to Russia itself. Following exhaustive research, he drove 15,000 km from coast to coast across the largest country in the world, in pursuit of new variations of this singular architectural form.
A foreword by renowned architecture and culture critic Owen Hatherley, reveals new information on the origins of the Soviet bus stop. Examining the government policy that allowed these ‘small architectural forms’ to flourish, he explains how they reflected Soviet values, and how ultimately they remained – despite their incredible individuality – far-flung outposts of Soviet ideology.

REVIEWS
While the Moscow metro is known around the world, photographer Christopher Herwig is the first to take an interest in the numerous and architecturally remarkable bus stops from the Soviet era. Following his successful book Soviet Bus Stops (2015), this new edition: Soviet Bus Stops Volume II, gathers even more fantastic examples of these ostensibly insignificant functional buildings.       The bus stop is interesting in the sense that it is, a type of minimalist architecture that combines a minimum of protection from the weather with a minimum of comfort in the form of a seat. This book shows us how improbably creative and varied these basic requirements can be - from simple pavilions with colourful mosaics, to large sculptures whose protective function seems to be almost a by-product.       Only with the publication of this typological guide, which the photographer has spent a great deal of time compiling, has this phenomenon become visible. Here, this ‘banal’ curiosity has great value. christopher herwig's documentary uncovers the curious case of soviet bus stops
Soviet Bus Stops by Christopher Herwig   During a bike ride from London to St. Petersburg in 2002, Canadian photographer Christopher Herwig found himself fascinated by the unique architecture of Soviet-era bus stops that he came across. Setting himself the challenge of capturing a compelling photo every hour, he began discovering creatively designed bus stops along deserted road sections.   Over…

Soviet Bus Stops, Volume II by Christopher Herwig
Soviet Bus Stops, Volume II by Christopher Herwig reviewed by Doug (@bagatsen) who is just as delighted as with the first volume.
“‘This is bullshit,’ I mumbled, through tears of exhaustion and frustration. The chances of the 4×4 climbing the snowy Goderdzi Pass were as slim as the likelihood that the bus stop at the summit was the prize I so desperately sought. Why was I still doing this after fifteen years, why couldn’t I stop?” (p. 198)
Christopher Herwig’s afterword to his second volume of Soviet Bus Stopsposes the…
