The Muse & Lord and Impact Characters

The Muse and Lord are master classes. I choose to see them as master classes not in that they have ultimate control over their session, or their aspects (although they should), but in that they have already mastered their character arcs. If their aspect aligns with the themes of the story (which it probably should), then that means they have a very deep understanding of their aspect, and their journey now is to impact other characters or events. So, they are masters of themselves, which allows them to control the story.

Now, the Muse and Lord control their aspects and themselves in completely different ways, so I’ll be splitting up the two from the start.

The Muse

The Muse’s defining question is, “How will I inspire?”

Setting

The Muse lives in a world at peace, needing a jolt of energy. The Muse doesn’t need to be the one to do something first, but they may. Ultimately, they will inspire others to make changes in the world for both the world’s gain and the gain of the other characters.

The Muse, however, is an extremely passive agent. They are actually unable to effect any real change upon the world and its players, only through the actions of others. In their world, the Muse has perfect control of their aspect and themselves in that they can perfectly represent an ideal. This ideal is what inspires others to action.

Impact

They inspire in other characters a desire to protect what is good and pure in their world. Because the Muse represents this, whatever it may be, the Muse becomes a lightning rod, conducting all the energy towards this ideal. The Muse uses their own innocence and purity of spirit to inspire others to take action.

The Muse also uses their purity and enthusiasm as a shining beacon of their ideal. It is a goal for the world to aspire to, like a Muse of Space representing ultimate creativity or a Muse of Breath representing ultimate freedom.

Journey

The Muse’s journey is to seek experiences and interactions with the world. Because they have mastered their class and aspect already, they are perfectly at peace with the world, ready to enjoy it as it is.

The Muse falls into the child archetype. Whimsical, carefree, and absolutely connected to their aspect in a way that only true innocence can, the Muse represents what we all hope for ourselves. Joy, purity, and the connection we had to the world as children.

Examples

Calliope wishes to interact with the world but is too afraid to. Even though she is afraid, her art and stories leak to the main cast of Homestuck and inspires them to keep going in their hour of darkness. She represents the endless possibilities of Space and inspires others to protect it.

Sylvia from The Truman Show exists as a goal for Truman’s pursuit of freedom. Her interactions with him inspire him to search for something more in his life. She inspires him to seek truth and what is real over what is safe.

The Lord

The Lord’s defining question is “How will I control?”

Very similar to the Bard/Prince, but the Lord is not concerned with the needs of their citizens. The Lord cares only for their Aspect.

Setting

The Lord’s world is one of order. Whether with the Lord guiding it or constricting it, the world is according to the desires of the Lord.

The Lord also upholds the order of the world. Without them, the world would fall into chaos and disorder. They are focused on the big pictures of the world, not weighed down by themselves or others.

Impact

They control their Aspect perfectly, and through them, their Aspect reaches fulfilment of all it represents. This may mean they use their own vast powers to bring about the fulfilment of their Aspect, or they use their large social capital to lead others to do so.

Because the Lord has mastered their own Class, they have much power. They use it to carry out the needs of their aspect, influencing others to fall into line.

Journey

The Lord’s goal is to use tools and citizens to continue upholding the ideals they stand for, and carry on the order of the world. They may do so draconically, but could also lead with kindness.

The Lord can become the tyrant or god archetype.

Examples

Lord English literally represents the mortality of the world through Time. He uses his own powers and the powers of others to orchestrate the death of the universe as part of its natural life cycle. He literally becomes an unstoppable force of nature.

Christof from The Truman Show is another example. He controls the entire set of the Truman Show like a god. He personifies the ideals of a false world and everyone must bow to his vision.

Discussion

The master classes are difficult to pin down, because we only see one of each in Homestuck, and in aspects that align perfectly with the themes of the story. While it may be that Muses always signal birth and creativity, these attributes could also be the work of Space. Ditto for Time, since it represents mortality and the natural cycle of things.

That being said, because Classes are more focused on plot and character arcs, and Aspects are more focused on themes, there are moments when we can separate them. For Calliope, we see how she inspires others to take action, especially with her very optimistic and trusting view of Space when she converses with Jade. For Caliborn, we see how he works hard, controls, and uses others as tools to his advantage. He brought a motley gang of leprechauns under his heel, showcasing the true power of the Lord not in the inevitability of time, but the ability to maintain order.

My second thought is that, the Muse and Lord are so disparate in their world and impacts, that I seriously consider them not to be sister Classes at all, the way Rogue/Thief, or Seer/Mage are. I actually propose four total master classes, as follows:

Muse/Saint -- Inspires the world

King/Lord -- Controls the world

I hope to expand upon them in a future post.

Conclusion

Through the Muse and Lord, we can explore what a fully realised Class can be. They are in total control of themselves and their Aspect, seeming to be at one with it. They experience no character arc because they do not need to, they are already at equilibrium with themselves. While fun to imagine ourselves as the pinnacle of creation, the Muse and Lord’s stories will often centre around the growth of others. Because they represent the themes so well, they are the best characters to help others on their own journeys, making the world a brighter place either through inspiration, or as a challenge promoting the growth of others.

(The anon who wanted to infodump about old Bacchus lookalikes a few weeks ago) In the end I tried to send an ask, but genuinely don't know if it actually went through or not. Of course I forgot to save a backup anywhere so if it got lost on the way I'll probably never get around to rewriting it now orz

Oh, it's you! I am so sorry for not responding. We had midterm exams and I was preoccupied with studying.

Now, as for your previous ask. It did send, but the exams delayed my response to it. Thankfully, I am now not as busy to reply.

So, regarding Christof, he is mega messed up! I get not wanting a child to experience the cruelty of the world, but manufacturing their trauma so that they don't leave and even filming their whole life and using the profits to prolong the illusion is downright despicable.

As for Charles, he seems to be rather comical albeit incessant on gaining riches. Compared to Christof, he's much less messed up.

As for their meeting with Bacchus, I would think he would criticize Charles lack of quick thinking skills and greed and would, at first, be okay with wanting to shield a child from a cruel world, but would soon be mortified at how the plan devolved into what the film shows.

I mean, Bacchus is not that better. He orchestrated an entire survival game that ultimately caused Deus' life to drain more than if Deus were to just remain idle and governed the universe. Although, I would give him the benefit of the doubt that no mortal could expect a God to die and said God to be slowly drained of life with constant use of the god-given future foretelling powers.
