~ A Father's Nightmare ~
"Oh, Chris..."
Fresh tears streamed down Robert "Robbie" Scott's face as he gently squeezed his son's hand.
He had spent several hours just sitting next to the young man's hospital bed, hoping for him to finally open his eyes. But there was still no sign of it going to happen.
Chris had fallen into a coma. There had been an accident at work, leaving him with a terrible head injury. When the ambulance had arrived at the hospital, chances had been very high that he wouldn't make it, but the doctors and nurses had done everything in their power and had managed to stabilize him.
Robbie closed his eyes, wiping away the tears with his wrist, and let out a deep sigh. It was every parent's worst nightmare to lose their child and he had been so close to it becoming his reality. A reality he wouldn't be able to live in. And the danger wasn't over yet.
Silently, Robbie listened to the steady beeping of the monitors, showing him that Chris was still alive and breathing. If the pace would change only the slightest bit, he was ready to call for a doctor. He wouldn't leave his wee lad alone.
"Robbie?"
A soft voice coming from the door caught the Scotsman's attention and he opened his eyes and glanced over his shoulder to see who had stepped into the room.
A weak smile pulled at the corner of his lips. Of course it could only be one person.
"Leah..."
The nurse was standing in the doorway, two cups in her hands. She gave her boyfriend a sympathetic look as she made her way over to the free chair next to him and sat down.
"Here. I thought that you could use a cup of tea."
She carefully handed Robbie one of the cups and he took it from her with a grateful nod.
"Aye. Thanks, mo chridhe."
His eyes wandered back to his unconcious son and the smile he had given Leah quickly faded.
"I still cannae believe it," he whispered, new tears filling his eyes. He looked towards the ceiling, trying to blink them away.
"I know, Robbie. I can't even imagine how hard this is for you, but... I'm here for you."
Leah grabbed his arm and gave it a squeeze, hoping to somehow be able to spend her love some comfort.
And she would never understand just how much it really meant to Robbie to have her at his side. She was the light he had searched for for so long. She was everything he could have hoped to find after his first wife had left him and Chris behind. Even though it had taken years for them to meet, he was so grateful to have her at his side these days.
And therefore he could be honest with her.
"I'm," his voice broke and he had to clear his throat to start again. "I'm so scared, Leah."
His voice was trembling and he kept his eyes fixed on Chris as he spoke out the truth.
"I'm so scared that I'll lose him. I'm scared that he'll never open his eyes again. The thought of never hearing his voice again, never getting a chance to talk him again, scares me to death."
His rambling went on and on and only when Leah's arms wrapped around him did the Scotsman finally stop talking.
"Shh, I know. I know that this is scary for you. I can see how much it hurts you. But you can't give up hope, sweetie. Chris needs you. He needs you to talk to him and tell him that everything's going to be just fine. He needs you to tell him that he has to be a fighter."
Robbie's eyes stared at his son's face as he listened to all the things Leah told him. She was right. His boy needed him. He needed a strong father who was only hoping for the best possible outcome of the situation.
"He... he will make it. Ye'll make it, Chris."
Chris Scott would open his eyes. Maybe it would take hours or days, but Robbie was sure that his son would wake up. And he'd be there when it happened. Just like Leah would. Her light would shine for both of them.

The Problem of Miss Saigon:
Re-listening to Miss Saigon for the first time in a very long time, and I am utterly disgusted with myself as a young teen who thought this was one of the most romantic shows I'd ever heard... I could not have been more wrong.
Chis is the worst case of toxic masculinity . Chris literally tells Kim that he'll "take her out with him" and goes through the marriage ceremony in Saigon with her. Yes, he's clueless, but he doesn't even try to understand, he just goes along with it.
Then, much later, when he's with Ellen, he tells her "I'm an American, how could I fail to do good?!" - which is one of the worst lines I've ever heard and I wanted to slap the man. Dude, you might admit you made a mess, but the fact that you really, really really think this is ... worrying. Frightening. You're passionate about it and *Dear God* you're such a little man-child.
He constantly treats and talks of Kim as though she's a possession "you're the one good thing that I've found out here"... romantic, if he hadn't called her a *thing*. Then when Thuy comes to "claim" Kim (and he's a whole issue all on his own, that deserves another post), Chris bristles and says "this girl is mine!" - they've been together less than a *week*.
He gets caught up in the magic and the romance of being with Kim, then all but blames everyone else for it when the chickens come home to roost. Kim's hopes and dreams get treated as though she's lost the plot, when that's exactly what Chris had been promising her the entire time he's in Vietnam.
The only one who sees him for the Idiot he is appears to be John, ironically, who says during the number *317* "What sustained her for miles, Chris still knows nothing of," - which is such a powerful line and shows how well this man understands his best friend. And he tells Ellen and Chris to their faces when they're deciding Tam and Kim's fates that they are "talking like fools". I actually think he would have been an amazing person for Kim to have been with - if indeed, she *had* to be paired up with someone as seems to be the way with these old fashioned musicals.
There’s the line that Ellen and Chris share at the end of The Confrontation which never fails to make me bristle: We will do what is right - right for Tam, right for us, and for Kim. Kim is the last one that they consider, and I hate it so much.
Instead... well, those of you that know the musical know how it ends. Poor Tam; I would love to see how Chris and Ellen dealt with explaining it all to him when he's older. I would not be surprised if they completely avoided the topic of Kim, and, knowing Chris' saviour complex, simply told him they brought him back as one of the Boi-Doi children to raise. Kim would have faded into obscurity - I'm not sure that Tam would have been old enough to remember Kim, as heartbreaking as it is, before she died.
Chris would have gotten away with the wreck of what he's done, and Tam might have remained forever in the dark about his origins.
Chris is a terrible character, and this is *not* a romance tale - its just a tragedy.

Despite being among humans for close to a decade, I still find their tendency to overcomplicate and avoid aspects of social situations to be confusing at best and infuriating at worst. So much time is wasted on tedious matters such as who gets to 'make the first move' or 'not come off too strong'.
For example, everyone aboard my vessel is keenly aware of Lt. Uhura and Engineer Scott's 'budding romance'. But their need to extend their oddly avoidant courtship ritual, rather than outright state their interest in one another, is pointless, as well as frustrating to witness.
Why do they do this? Why not 'get it over with', as they say?
I encourage answers from all cultures, human or otherwise.

Rating: T

(You can also find this story on AO3)
~ Working Nine to Five ~
Once again, Robert "Robbie" Scott's body was shaken by a violent coughing fit and he stared wearily into the mirror. Dark circles had formed under his eyes and his face was pale.
The Scotsman felt miserable. He had been sniffling and coughing all night. He had barely managed to catch a wee bit of sleep, but he still knew he had to get to work. Too many things needed to be done. The entire computer system of a private spaceship in the shipyard had to be repaired. And he didn't have much time left for the job. Maybe another day or two – at most!
For this very reason, Robbie simply filled his hands with some cool water and splashed it into his face. As the liquid touched his skin, the Scotsman could literally feel that his forehead was as warm as a hotplate. But the water had the desired effect and, as he noticed when he looked in the mirror again, made him look much more awake.
He ignored how blurred his vision was. He was sure that only a little water had gotten into his eyes. For sure.
It was just a simple cold.
~
Every movement hurt his muscles as Robbie moved slowly through the ship under repair, going from console to console. He was sweating like crazy and his vision wasn't getting any better.
Many of the staff had advised him to go home or rest, but he didn't have time for that. He was needed on the spot.
"Mr. Scott!" The loud voice of his supervisor rang through the halls of the shipyard and Robbie flinched involuntarily, looking up from the console he was working on.
"A-aye, ma'am?"
The stern-looking Tellarite came to a halt in front of him and scrutinized the Scotsman from head to toe. She wrinkled her pig-like nose.
"God, you look horrible! You'd better go to bed earlier if you have to work the next day!"
Robbie sighed inwardly. He really missed his human boss, who was currently on vacation and was being replaced by Miss Gragur.
"Aye, ma'am."
What else could he say back? The Tellarite wouldn't believe him anyway.
"How far along are you and the team with the work?" Gragur eyed the console critically and Robbie would have liked to give her a detailed status report, but just as he tried to speak, he had to cough again. The attack was much worse than the previous ones and it took him a moment to catch his breath.
"My goodness, Scott, pull yourself together! You –" His boss stopped mid-sentence as she caught sight of something on Robbie's sleeve and face.
A few swear words in her native language later, she had her communicator in her hand.
"We need an emergency doctor at these coordinates! Now!"
Robbie blinked in confusion. The veil in front of his eyes had thickened even more. What was Gragur talking about? An emergency doctor? He had just coughed. He wasn't injured.
Slowly, the Scotsman let his bleary eyes wander to his arm and he realized what had caused the alien lady to react so exaggeratedly.
His entire sleeve, into which he had coughed, was covered in blood. Robbie wanted to say something, but it was already too late. His entire body's circulation failed and sent him into the realm of dreams.
~
He woke up to the steady noise of beeping. Robbie's eyes slowly fluttered open and he was very surprised to see that he was lying in a hospital room. He let his eyes wander, only to find two familar figures sitting next to him.
A soft smile formed on his lips as he recognized them as his girlfriend and son. They were chatting quietly, not looking at the Scotsman at first, but Chris quickly noticed his father's head moving.
"Oh my – look! He's waking up!" the young man exclaimed and Leah followed his gaze.
"Oh Robbie..." The nurse gave him a gentle look and took her boyfriend's hand in hers. He could see that she had cried.
"What... what happened?" Robbie frowned, trying his best to remember just how he had ended up in the hospital.
"You were admitted a few hours ago. You were coughing up blood and were in a very poor general condition. When the doctors examined you, they diagnosed an infection with a rare type of bacteria. By the time you got here," Leah swallowed hard, "it was almost too late, but we did everything we could to fight the bacteria."
And they had obviously succeeded.
"But... how could I get infected with something like that? I... I was just at home or at work."
Robbie tried to remember the last few days.
"It was transmitted by a small alien creature we found on your leg. It resembles the ticks of the 21st century."
A... tick?
Robbie's eyes widened as something occurred to him.
"The plant."
He had recently bought a plant at a market. Leah had said that his apartment looked so colorless and he had thought that he could brighten everything up a bit. The creature must have been hiding in the plant.
"What? What are ye talking about, Dad?" Chris looked at Robbie, confused. So the technician explained everything to Leah and him.
The plant was soon recovered and the man selling them was quickly found. Two things were certain: there would never be another case like this. And next time, Robbie would worry more about his own health than about the work.
