Hi lads. With shadow and bone series 2 fast approaching, I think it's time to answer a question on all of our minds?
What is a crow?
I think it's time for a classic game of "is that a crow?" Hosted by someone who is definitely not qualified.
Candidate 1: jackdaw
Not a crow. Crow shaped sure. A little stumpy in places though. Silver around the neck because these guys are just too fancy. In the air, they look pretty darn close to a crow. Always look out for that stubby tail (sorry jackdaw I love you) and smaller wings.
Disclaimer: I do not know a single technical term for anything, I just really like birds.
Candidate 2: raven
Not a crow. Kind of like if a crow could have an emotional phase. Also these fuckers are massive. More of a hooked beak and they don't look as well put together. The big difference everyone will point to when you ask what's the difference (and to that I say how can you compare perfection) is that raven's have a diamond tail rather than a fan tail. In addition to recognising human faces, they are also capable of holding grudges. Legends.
Candidate 3: rook
Not a crow. Metal as hell though. Grey beak because why the hell not. (But seriously if you know anything about corvid beaks hmu) from a field, they look a bit yellow. I once thought a saw one of these but it was just a crow with a beakfull of catkins. From the sky they look quite crow. It's almost like they're related or something.
Candidate 4: chough
Not a crow. This guy isn't even trying. Red beak. Red legs. Too stylish to care. From the sky, again very crow. But their beaks look like tiny chilly peppers. If you see one of these, big fat congratulations.
Candidate 5: hooded crow
It's a crow. I can hear some of saying "A, it took you five birds to get to a crow and I doesn't even look like a crow." 1. You just got to look at five bird pictures. 2. Don't diss the hooded crow. Silver waist coat wearing capturer of my heart. A crow is a crow no matter how complicated.
Candidate 6: carrion crow
It's a crow. Crow shaped. Crow sounding. Fan tail. All black. Kind eyes. A classic for a reason
Thank you for joining me. Together we can correctly identify our corvids. This post is dedicated to magpies and eurasian jays. Forever in our hearts but just not Crow enough.

Photos taken here today in this set are of: 1. Chough, it was astonishing so see a decent handful of these energetic and ravishing scarlet billed crows as they picked at the grassy cliffs and dashed over our heads announcing themselves with their sharp and vibrant onomatopoeic calls as they went. An exceptional way to see my first of the year of this species, taking my year list to 205 just one behind last year’s total my highest ever, one of a few amazing experiences we’ve had with Choughs over the past few years at this sensational place for them. 2. Puffins, another red beaked bird I love so much that it was incredible to see well today. Four trips involving seeing Puffins in 2022 and 2023 makes me feel incredibly lucky and I never tire of seeing these iconic birds. 3 and 4. Guillemots and Razorbills, two more amazing seabirds it was wonderful to see packed tightly onto the cliffs, on the water and flying today. I love these birds and it was another splendid and immersive seabird experience today. 5, 9 and 10. Views at this beautiful spot. 6. Sheep’s-bit, an enigmatic and pretty flower that has been a star this holiday so far. 7. Some of my first centuary of the year, a smashing flower that I always like seeing. 8. Mating Swollen-thighed beetles.
Fulmar, Kittiwakes, Gannet, Raven, Magpie, Jackdaw on a strong corvid day, Stonechat, Rock Pipit, Pied Wagtail, House Martin, Common Blue butterfly, Red Admiral and Small Tortoiseshell were other highlights here. It was a strong insect trip here with a phenomenal Hummingbird hawk-moth seen fluttering through the air, my first Six-spot Burnet moth seen this year, an Oak Eggar moth caterpillar and exquisite views of a shiny Rose Chafer beetle our first ever. Stunning moments with Hairy shield bug seen too. Heather in flower as we’ve often seen here the great purple colour, honeysuckle, English stonecrop, chamomile, restharrow, purple sandwort and sea plantain again key finds so far this holiday, thrift and thyme including mixed well at one point and sea campion were key flowers seen here.

Red-Billed Chough (Pyrrhocorax pyrrhocorax)
Pronounced 'chuff', the name 'Chough' was originally an alternative onomatopoeic name for the Jackdaw, based on its call. It is part of the crow family, and one of only two birds in the Pyrrhocorax genus. It has long been associated with Cornwall, and appears on the Cornish coat of arms.

Monarto's Wildlife Roads
Dear Reader:
David notices a pair of brightly coloured Mulga Ringneck parrots landing in a tree by the roadside. I pull the car over and power down the window to allow both of us to capture some images.
Mallee Ringneck
On this initial foray into the bushland around Frahns Farm, in the Monarto area, we are exploring the roads surrounding a fenced off region which is being revegetated. We have…

Looking back on an amazing and year defining day twelve months ago today on Skomer Island where I enjoyed seeing so many Puffins, Guillemot, Razorbill, Kittiwake, Fulmar, Wheatears, Willow Warbler, Chough, Red Kite, Harbour Porpoises, Grey Seals, a wonderful Osprey sighting and more. I took the pictures in this photoset that day of; Puffins, beautiful coastal views the habitat I love, sea campion that painted so much of the landscape white that week at Martin’s Haven before boarding the boat, Osprey and Guillemots.
I did these three posts about the day on the day a year ago: https://dansnaturepictures.tumblr.com/post/682628385522008064/26042022-blog-1-of-3-skomer-island-and-martins, https://dansnaturepictures.tumblr.com/post/682628679474511872/26042022-post-2-of-3-ten-landscape-photos-i and https://dansnaturepictures.tumblr.com/post/682629165561872384/26042022-post-3-of-3-ten-photos-i-took-of
