premise: professional athlete injured during a game and suffering from brief, short-term memory loss after waking up in the hospital (so i was thinking friends who have feelings for each other and he accidentally lets it slip because he's out of it, but i'm open! so, friends? teammates? feelings for each other? partner? whatever it is he's being a lot)

"Oh no," Joel grumbles as he pulls his arm over his eyes to block out the fluorescent lights. "That's... embarrassing. They had to carry me off the ice?" Shaking his head, he lets his shoulders sink into the pillow while he considers the scenario. This isn't the first time they have explained how the injury occurred, but the doctors weren't kidding when they said it may take a couple hours for his mind to find its bearings. "What about you? You were there...? That's so much worse. I'm so sorry..."

dick rolled his eyes. but this time, it wasn't with his heart pounding in his ears at the fear of failure in his friend's bravado. the words weren't taken with taut shoulders, tightly wound to compartmentalize and pack in all the stress a high stakes mission could create. it wasn't setting off that little nerve that pulsated too close to his brain --- made the seed of annoyance grow until the roots gripped his rationality with blinding fear and anger. instead, it was marked by a knowing smile cracking his sun-warmed face and all the ease of summer. " i'm telling you it won't hold, speedy. " because OF COURSE, roy couldn't let dick's cannonball record be the winner. sitting on the little dock just left of the trees and still sopping wet from where he'd just exited his grandest performance, dick has to squint into the sun to get even a glimpse of ginger hair. he finds him eventually, muscled archer's arms reaching up, branch after branch to get HIGHER than the usual jumping spot. the trees weren't even tall enough for them to ever reach worrisome heights, and any spot but the center was over deep enough water that all a slip would do is bruise one very large ego. but right at the end --- right where showman roy harper was sure to eye as his great diving board was too thin to get any real balance before jumping. it would snap, and down it would fall, dragging with it one, second place stuntman. the acrobat swipes at the little droplets of water obscuring his vision, getting the bulk of damp bangs out from his face and squinting one blue eye back up at his target before deciding to raise the stakes of roy's vying for gold. " i'll bet you . . . " dick gives himself a second for roy to gain even footing and himself to decide on the wager, corner of his mouth in what seemed like a permanent uptick as june progressed. " anything that you don't get a single flip in. "

"Father!" He exclaims, spotting the Archduke in the mirror's reflection, standing in the doorway to Clive's chambers.

Clive turns with his fingers still tangled in the intricate lacing of his doublet, having struggled with his attire for the past hour or so, not wanting to bother any of the servants when he knows his mother has all of them run errands upon errands for the festivities.

"I am late, aren't I?" His gaze flickers downward, not quite able to meet his father's eyes in light of his tardiness. It must be bad if the Archduke himself found the need to seek him out. Clive thought he set aside ample time to get dressed, but somewhere along the way it must still have gotten away from him.

It admittedly doesn't help that he doesn't want to go to the ball in the first place.

quick chatter about jallakuntilliokan's role in canon + what i'm integrating into my portrayal, bc my hellblazer pre-order still isn't here yet and i'm going berserk re-reading the comics to pass the time:

jallakuntilliokan is one half of a twin god called "the god of all gods" and described as "the dragon", described in the comics as the masculine principle animus to the feminine principle anima; essentially, the earth as a god. as described by zed: "the god of all gods is the earth, on whom we live. the earth is a living body. the power of life flows through it — male and female. god is the harmonic force." this is, of course, a very binary explanation in terms of gender and i will probably be recategorizing & tweaking this as i develop jalla & klavi, since nature can require symbiosis in other ways than gender-stereotypical principles. potentially jalla represents the oft-destructive refinement of natural processes/animal consciousness while its counterpart represents the maintaining & sustaining of pre-existing systems?? processes of decay VS new growth??? i'm working on it.

as described by constantine: "the god that we're dealing with is an archetype of human consciousness. it's a response to an emotional stimulus — a memory of a time when our brains worked differently — a time when gods were real because we lived more on the creative right side of our brains than in the "rational" universe of the left." this is why i've decided that jalla is also tied to the Dreaming, since it's linked to creativity + consciousness.

jallakuntilliokan draws its power from two primary sources: ley lines and the human consciousness, including dreams, nightmares, and the imagination. a partial way to hurt/diminish jallakuntilliokan's powers is by disrupting the ley system, cutting it off from its power source. in the comics, they did this by "earthing" ley energy, driving copper stakes into ancient stone-circles.

constantine described the process of its summoning as "they're using blood and sacrifice and terror to feed the male principle and raise it in the universal mind — using the breaking of taboo to realize a force of primal creation." the magus at geotroniks was letting a terror-thing created by traumatized psychics run rampant through the system of ley lines across the earth to revive jallakuntilliokan's energy. this is why the version of jalla i'm writing is tied so tightly to fear: it's been revived on, fed on, and saturated with human terror.

like i used to do with light, i'm going to (occasionally) pull some manga panels and discuss them, or surmise what we know to give us more context about kurama throughout the series.

chapter 22

we know he is a yoko, and is considered a demon*, though technically he seems to have been born a regular fox (by the lore chosen and the given translations). the dub refers to him as a "spirit fox"** that gained the powers of a demon.

*a lot of english translations simply surmise the "demons" of yu yu hakusho to be just that: demons. in reality, they're actually yokai (spirits), which would make sense to calling kurama a "spirit fox", depending on how you look at the lore / what you take from it. there's a lot of leniency in yyh, but also a lot of irl references. read more about the distinction specifically in yyh here. so, technically speaking, kurama is a yokai, but i'll likely refer to him as a demon here and there.

**they don't start quite making human, demon, and spirit world distinctions in the anime until later on, referring only to the spirit and human worlds, as well as spirit (and sometimes the use of life) energy. only later around the dark tournament time referring to demon energy separately (at least in the anime's dub, the sub does make these distinctions to what i've seen, as does the manga immediately)

in the anime, and in the above image of the fox itself, he's seen to have 4 tails.

there's varying lore around kitsune and their tails (see these posts here and here), and a lot that goes into making "yoko kurama". we initially see him as just as a kitsune, but we see later that he has a more "humanoid" form as yoko. we also know that there is. alot of speculation on just how old kurama is, to which i'll try and be as specific as i can.

we know his actual human form (shuichi) starts at 15 in the series when he meets yusuke, and that he is in high school (attending the private academy meiō). the posts linked about kurama's tails also delve into the possibilities of his age, using his tails and other context clues / series indicators / direct quotes to find a reasonable answer.

it's likely that he's around 5,000 years old (as yoko).

there's been a lot of changes to both hiei and kurama throughout their time in yyh, especially from the beginning. specifically, i'd say more to hiei, with a bit of retcon to kurama, but not a lot. this is due to kurama being foreseen as a returning character, but hiei only returning due to being a fan favorite, not meant to be a main character at first.

his motivations are primarily the same, but i doubt he was ever intended to originally have a yoko form the way we later see him. we're never given a clear answer to if both of these forms can exist simultaneously (the fox/kitsune and the yoko kurama humanoid).

we can assume that kurama started as either a traditional or "spirit" fox of sorts, became a kitsune, and earned his silver coloring (if he wasn't silver already? but by lore, it would make sense to "become" silver, as that can happen in replacement of a tail), along with his tails.

i want to say that the yoko form came later, as he was hunted and almost killed in his kitsune form. i am thinking this is almost like a sesshoumaru thing — there is a true form (the animal) and a humanoid form. at least, that's what i'll be going with.

so ... for lore purposes, he was later gifted (or learned himself) the ability to shift into this humanoid form, while still retaining his kitsune or "fox" form.

shifting gears, we see that this chapter is not about showing kurama's fighting abilities, as he wants to make a deal with yusuke to return the stolen artifact from the spirit world. there is mention later that animal spirits use plant-based weapons, which i touch on here.

i don't have much to highlight, as i think the narrative speaks for itself, but this entire scene is left out of the anime. it's very important to kurama's backstory and his connection with his mother, which is harped on so heavily in the anime, so to remove such a small (but powerful) detail seems to cheat the audience of a further early connection with kurama.

i will say, it's important to note that he seems to think that his mother cares less for him than he does for her. she's done nothing to display this, but he seems to think she'll be fine without him, more than he would be without her.

in the anime, he likens himself to a "mother-devouring creature" and speaks of his guilt. in the manga, he tells yusuke he wanted someone to listen to his regrets.
