"The next time I saw Sebastian was on the Thursday of the race weekend in China, and I said we needed to talk. The ensuing conversation was the most disappointing moment of our entire relationship. He said he was pissed off by what I had said on the podium in Malaysia, that while he respected me as a driver he had no respect for me as a person.
That was a heavy line for me. I simply said, ‘Then our relationship is in trouble. That’s it.’ I had clung to the belief that we might sort things out between us but I couldn’t help thinking someone must have got in his ear to cause such an about-face. Christian later insisted it was all of Sebastian’s own doing, his justification being that it was payback for Silverstone 2011 and Brazil 2012. I could have gone back a lot further than that!"

Rights campaigners have for years accused Beijing of a crackdown against Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities in Xinjiang, including through forced labour and detention camps.
Beijing denies allegations of abuse and insists its actions in Xinjiang have helped to combat extremism and enhance development.
Germany's Handelsblatt financial daily reported this week that forced labour may have been used to build a test track for VW in Turpan, Xinjiang in 2019.
VW said Wednesday it had seen no evidence of human rights violations in connection with the project but vowed to investigate any new information that came to light.
In a statement sent to AFP, Beijing's foreign ministry said allegations of abuses in the region were "entirely a lie concocted... with the aim of destabilising Xinjiang".
It urged firms to "respect the facts, distinguish right from wrong, and not be blinded by lies".
In an apparent sign of the growing pressure on VW over its presence in the region, the company said this week that it was in talks with its Chinese joint-venture partner SAIC "about the future direction of business activities in Xinjiang".
"Various scenarios are currently being intensively examined," VW said in a statement.
Beijing said Thursday that "the human rights of people of all ethnic groups in Xinjiang are protected to the maximum extent".
Claims of rights abuses in the northwestern region, it added, were aimed at "discrediting and suppressing China".
"Xinjiang currently enjoys social stability, economic development, ethnic unity, and religious harmony," the foreign ministry said.
Rights concerns
Beijing stands accused of incarcerating over one million Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities in a network of detention facilities across Xinjiang.
Campaigners and Uyghurs overseas have said an array of abuses take place inside the facilities, including torture, forced labour, forced sterilisation and political indoctrination.
A UN report in 2022 detailed "credible" evidence of torture, forced medical treatment and sexual or gender-based violence -- as well as forced labour -- in the region.
But it stopped short of labelling Beijing's actions a "genocide", as the United States and some Western lawmakers have done.
Calls have grown louder for VW to reconsider its business activities in Xinjiang after German chemicals giant BASF announced last week that it would accelerate its exit from two joint ventures there.
Xinjiang is home to numerous factories that supply multinational companies, including big-name Western brands.
VW has long come under scrutiny over its factory in the city of Urumqi, which opened in 2013 and in which it has a stake via its partner SAIC.
An external audit commissioned by VW last year found no evidence of forced labour among the plant's 197 employees.
But the consultancy that wrote the report acknowledged "the challenges in collecting data" for audits in China.
The Turpan test track was not part of the audit.

On This Day in F1: April 5
Present: Japan Day 1
History: 2009 Malaysian Grand Prix
I'm going to be honest, the time zone differences from Australia to China are screwing with my perception of when things are happening (and my sleep schedule). Especially since FP1 happened on Thursday night (before midnight) for me and FP3 will be on Friday night. So I've been all over the place since the Australian GP.
But in Japan on April 5th, 2024, FP1 and FP2 occurred. There wasn't much to talk about in FP1 except for Logan Sargeant crashing toward the latter half of the session and Will Buxton revealing that there were other teams that only had two chassis for the weekend. Alpine has confirmed that they are one of those teams.
(Sidenote: the plural of chassis is chassis but it's pronounced with a "z" at the end. So the singular is pronounced like "CHASS-ee" and the plural is pronounced like "CHASS-eez." The more you know, I guess.)
FP2 had even less to talk about. It was raining and more than half of the drivers didn't set a lap time. Briefly, Yuki Tsunoda was at the top of the timing charts with Daniel Ricciardo in second. But then Oscar Piastri set a faster lap with Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc finishing out the top 3.
2024 marks 10 years since Jules Bianchi crashed during the 2014 Japanese Grand Prix and lost his life due to the injuries from his crash. In honor of Jules, Charles - Jules' godson - has a special helmet in Jules' colors and with his number 17 on it.
We tend to talk about Jules in relation to his crash, Charles, Daniel, or any other drivers he was friends with. While they are a piece of his story and he is a piece of their stories, we should also remember Jules for himself - for the things he did and loved. He scored his first points in Monaco and that was the first GP he'd attended as a child, he liked dark chocolate, the first meal he cooked wasn't good, his hero was Michael Schumacher because he was winning, etc.
Looking back to another rain-filled day, the 2009 Malaysian Grand Prix took place on April 5th.
Malaysia was the second race of the historic 2009 season - which does go to show how early we start the season now in comparison to the previous seasons.
It should have been 56 laps of racing, but due to torrential rain, drivers were only able to complete 31 classified laps. This did not meet the 75% minimum distance completed for full points to be awarded. Therefore, half points were awarded to drivers. The race had been stopped on lap 33 and was not later resumed due to the darkness. Lap 31 was the penultimate full lap and was the one used to determine classifications per sporting regulations.
Half points are very rarely awarded. Malaysia 2009 was the fifth time in F1 history that it had happened (the 4th time had been the 1991 Australian GP). And it didn't happen again until the 2021 Belgian GP.
Jenson Button, driving for Brawn GP, was declared the winner of the Grand Prix as he started the race on pole position and was the race leader for lap 31.
Nick Heidfeld driving for BMW Sauber finished second and Timo Glock driving for Toyota finished third. Heidfeld was the first driver with a KERS-equipped car to take a podium position.
Since Jenson had won the 2009 Australian Grand Prix as well, Brawn GP became the first team since Alfa Romeo in 1950 to win the first two World Championship Grands Prix of the season.

Fiji’s Social Democratic Liberal party (Sodelpa) said on Friday that it would form a coalition with two other parties, a move that will dislodge the current prime minister, Frank Bainimarama, signalling an end to the former military leader’s 16 years in power.
“We believe we have agreed on a way forward that benefits this country,” party leader Viliame Gavoka said in a news conference after an internal party vote.
Fiji, which has a history of military coups, was dominated by sometimes tense race relations between its indigenous majority and a big ethnic Indian group, before constitutional reform in 2013 [by Bainimarama] to remove a race-based voting system that favoured indigenous Fijians.
Bainimarama, who has yet to concede defeat, said on Thursday the military had been called in to assist police maintain law and order because of attacks on the Indian ethnic minority in the wake of a national election last week that showed no party received a clear majority.[...]
Fiji has been pivotal to the strategically located region’s response to increasing competition for influence between China and the United States, and struck an agreement with Australia in October to work more closely with its military.

Chinese J-20 PLA jets 'sweal' foreign war planes from the South China Sea

The J-20 stealth jets of the Chinese People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) allegedly pushed away foreign aircraft flying near China's territorial airspace.
Pilots linked to the Wang Hai Air Group recently conducted combat patrols involving J-20s in the East China Sea Air Defense Identification Zone, China Central Television (CCTV) reported on Wednesday. During the mission, the J-20 apparently drove away foreign aircraft that were approaching Chinese airspace, as a pilot sent warnings through radio communications "This is the Chinese Air Force. You approached Chinese airspace, get out immediately!"
China established its East China Sea Air Defense Identification Zone in November 2013. In the last 10 years, the J-20 has flown in the East China Sea, the South China Sea and the Taiwan Strait.
Mass production and the wide implementation of the J-20 will allow the PLA Air Force to better protect China's sovereignty, territorial integrity and development interests, said a Beijing military expert who asked the Global Times for anonymity on Thursday.

GRAINS-Wheat prices set for weekly gain, but rally loses steam CANBERRA, Dec 1 (Reuters) - Chicago wheat futures dipped on Friday, but were still on track to end the week 3% higher after larger-than-expected U.S. export sales added impetus to a short-covering rally. Soybeans and corn also slipped and were flat over the week. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) reported export sales of 2023/24 wheat in the week ended Nov. 23 of 22,800 metric tons, a six-week high. The USDA said China had bought a net 197,310 tons, also the most in six weeks. Speculators had built a large short positions in Chicago wheat, adding extra pressure on the market as plentiful supply of cheap Russian grain held prices around three-year lows. But commodity funds were net buyers of wheat futures on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, traders said, driving a price rally. The most-active wheat contract on the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) Wv1 was down 0.5% at $5.94-3/4 a bushel by 0421 GMT, but set for its biggest weekly gain since early October. Analysts at JPMorgan said they had a "prominent bullish risk bias and constructive price forecast" for wheat. "The world balance continues to show a sustained trend of declining inventories and stocks-to-use through 2023/24 to 2024/25, to their lowest since 2013/14," they said, predicting that prices would average $6.33 a bushel next year. Russia expects another bumper harvest next year. Consultants IKAR said the country would produce more wheat, but export less next year than previously thought. Meanwhile, the Buenos Aires Grains Exchange said Argentina's 2023/24 wheat harvest could be larger than currently expected, as late frost may have done less damage than forecast. In other crops, CBOT soybeans Sv1 fell 0.8% to $13.32-1/4 a bushel and corn Cv1 slipped 0.2% to $4.81-3/4 a bushel. Consultancy Patria Agronegocios said Brazil would produce 150.67 million tons in the 2023/24 cycle, below last season's 154.10 million, due to drought in key producing states. The projection is the first seen by Reuters that predicts a year-on-year decline in soy production in Brazil, the world's biggest soybean exporter. Soybean demand is also strong in the United States, where the bean crush likely jumped to a record 6.033 million short tons in October, a poll of analysts showed ahead of a monthly USDA report. The USDA reported U.S. soybean export sales of last week at 1,895,300 metric tons, above expectations, and private sales of 134,000 metric tons for delivery to China. In corn markets, Patria said Brazil would likely produce 82.45 million tons of second corn in 2023/24, down around 18 million tons from last season. Second corn planted after soybeans are harvested represents around 75% of Brazil's total corn output. U.S. export sales of U.S. corn in the week ended Nov. 23 at 1,927,800 metric tons also exceeded expectations.
