Letters I Can Never Send, No. 4
Dear D,
2011 was quite an eventful year.  I had my first prom, spent most of the summer at a liberal arts college a couple of hours away for a scholarship program, and started my senior year begrudgingly, wishing that I didn’t have to waste another year in that windowless, freezing-cold, hulking slab of 1970s architecture.  My days were occupied with a rigorous courseload of AP classes, college applications, scholarship opportunities, and extracurriculars.
My nights were occupied with you.  If we weren’t having one of our 2 a.m. MSN talks, then I was busy listening to all the songs that reminded me of you, writing about you in my journal, or obsessively combing over your Facebook profile for new pictures of you, while at the same time checking for the presence of other girls in your life.  Your MSN away messages were another good source of entertainment; I remember one night you had written, “Showering, join?”  It drove me crazy, you putting such fantasies into my head like that.
As autumn gave way to winter, I became close friends with Chelsea, a girl who lived down the street from me and who just so happened to be dating Jason, one of your best friends.  I told her all about our bizarre friendship as she and I attempted recipes from Pinterest, hiked the secluded trails around our houses, and babysat her two younger brothers.  She tried to get information out of Jason on how you really felt about me, but it became evident that guys just don’t talk about those kinds of things.
One morning in mid-December, she rushed up to me in the hallway before classes started and told me with hushed excitement that she had an idea.  She wanted to organize a double date for the four of us on New Year’s Eve.  I, of course, wholeheartedly agreed to the idea, so Chelsea told Jason, Jason told you, and before we knew it, we had a plan in place.
Chelsea slept over at my house the night before our big date.  We woke up late that morning and spent the entire afternoon getting ready.  We curled our hair, painted our nails, and together we went through the entire contents of my closet, looking for the outfit that would make you fall in love with me right there in the dingy bowling alley.  I finally settled on a pink and white striped shirt, scoop neck, with a lace cami peeking out from the neck and hemlines.  I paired it with dark jeans and cowgirl boots.  Chelsea’s outfit ended up being almost comically similar.
You and Jason were supposed to pick us up at six o’clock but rolled in fifteen minutes late after sleeping until almost four.  We feigned disapproval of your tardiness as we got into your new car - a white Kia Forte.  Chelsea and Jason carried the conversation while you focused on the road and I stole glances at you from the corner of my eye.  We drove to a slightly larger town about an hour away, our first stop being Applebee’s, and as we turned into the parking lot, we saw that it was absolutely packed.  There was exactly one spot left, a tight squeeze between a large SUV and a Cadillac parked on the line.  You did it, though, and we carefully nudged our doors open and slid out of the car.
As we approached the restaurant, an older man met us on the sidewalk and demanded to know who had been driving the white car.  You stepped forward as he asserted that he saw you hit his Cadillac.  We all chimed in at once, stating that no, he did not hit the Cadillac because we were all in the car and would have felt it if we had hit something.  The man wasn’t having it, though, and asked that you follow him back to the parked cars.  Jason went with you, but it was freezing so you told Chelsea and me to go on in and get us a table.
From our table in the bar area, we could see the scene outside unfolding, the man becoming more agitated and you looking more baffled by the second.  Then, the city police showed up, and everyone stood around arguing some more.  Chelsea and I sipped our Diet Cokes and speculated on what was being said.  After what felt like an eternity, you and Jason came inside and sat down.  Nothing had come of it and the man had left.  Our waitress bounced up to the table to take our orders, mentioning that they were fresh out of French fries and chicken wings.
The rest of the night went more smoothly; the town had a movie theatre attached to a bowling alley, so we went there after dinner.  We saw a bad horror film and then went next door and bowled a couple of games.  Chelsea said I should have seen the look on your face - a look of pure adoration - as I jumped up and down with delight after I got a strike.
The clock struck midnight as we were driving home.  Chelsea and Jason kissed in the backseat, but since you were watching the road, I just kissed my finger and pressed it to your cheek.  You winced, said, “What was that for?”  I giggled and whispered that it was your New Year’s kiss.  You guffawed and admitted that you thought I had been trying to poke you in the eye.  I cringed into my seat, embarrassed that my cute gesture had backfired.  When we made it back to my house, I gave you a genuine hug and you pecked me on the cheek.  I waved goodnight to everyone as I riffled in my purse for my house key.
The next afternoon, I texted Chelsea, distraught that I hadn’t heard from you yet - completely forgetting the fact that you had slept until four in the afternoon the day before.  At the time, however, I was positive that you had decided that I was just a silly little girl, unworthy of the grown-up kind of love I so desperately wanted from you.  Chelsea had information, though: she said that after you had dropped us off at home, you and Jason had had a long talk in the car about me.  You had told him that you liked me.  You liked me a lot, and that was the problem.  You liked me so much that you thought I could be the one, and it scared you to death because you didn’t ever want to hurt me.  I wasn’t sure I believed that, but neither she nor Jason had any reason to lie, so I carried on with tentative hope that we would have our happy ending.
You did go a bit quiet for a couple of days, but you quickly recovered yourself and started texting me again.  I was falling in love.  I don’t know if you knew it, but I have a feeling that you did.  You continued to keep your distance, which drove me mad, but I was happy enough with the attention that I was getting from you and couldn’t wait until the fall when I would join you at college.  This was starting to get good.
Until February 16th brought it all to a screeching halt.

OSRR: 1973
today was good! i finally ran some errands i'd been meaning to do for a while, and game was fun. and for a bit in the middle, i got to spend time with joel. ☺️
so yesterday was AWESOME. i didn't get much sleep because i was up late wrapping gifts and then didn't fall asleep until like 4something in the morning, and chelsea woke me up just before 8, but it was fun. momma was surprised and happy by the contents of her stocking, and everyone enjoyed the gifts i got for them. plus my sister and her husband finally was able to give me the switch lite they got for me, and they also gave me pokémon shield and i'm SO excited because i have my own console!! and pokémon game!!! and i got a bunch of pokémon and magic cards, and a pocket knife and a new shirt and a ONESIE WITH POCKETS, so overall? a+.
and then i got to go to joel's where i was given a bunch of stuff there, too. joel's brothers and their wives were there too, and it was nice to see them. john enjoyed his gifts, lisa loves her scarf, and renee loved the mug i got her, and joel was just kinda floored with my gifts for him. he was like, you know this is gonna be filled today, right? about the decanter. and he was super excited about the dice stones, too. lance and sam and ethan and hayley were also happy - i got both couples an amazon gift card. they were surprised to get something from me, because they're all limited on resources, which i get because lance and sam JUST bought a house, and ethan and hayley are moving soon, so all of their resources are going into housing and moving and stuff like that. but i was happy to give them something helpful.
i was given a bunch of stuff and i gotta say, it was awesome. i got a twelve pack of harry potter socks, a bunch of makeup from sephora (S U P E R pricey), fuzzy socks and some lotion and a fuzzy pen and stuff in my stocking, a pillow that looked like an ordinary dusk over a bridge but had MOTHMAN in one corner!!, tiny mothman plushies, a mothman enamel pin, a really pretty tshirt dress from lularoe, a hand-painted letterman jacket with MOTHMAN ON THE BACK, an applebee's gift card, a nintendo store gift card, and two gorgeous sets of dice from joel: translucent pan pride heartbeat dice, and the sylvan watermelon tourmaline dice i've been wanting for MONTHS. and then lisa gave me two more dresses - the dinosaur one she wore at thanksgiving and a brand new red one with a deep v neck that's R E D and i'm totally wearing it on new years with the red lipstick she gave me. i got to hang out with joel's family and then we went to his uncle and aunt's for dinner and the kids gave me a sephora gift card and i was surprised and happy to receive something. it was very kind of them to think of me. overall: a+
so between giving good gifts and receiving good gifts that honestly made me feel like a really cool fourteen year old, i would say that this christmas has been the best on the books so far. it was awesome.
(and getting that sephora gift card from the kids saved me almost fifty dollars - i wanted to keep my gifts for aubrey and tyler around the same price value, and since aubrey loves sephora and i don't really ever wear makeup, i'm giving her the gift card and i was able to return the gift i had gotten for her and part of tyler's gift to keep them equal-ish value. i got to return them in my adventures today. and i got rid of a bag of stuff for goodwill. and i returned yarn i didn't need. and i got more fabric for dice bags. and i found the wallet i've been searching for for two months at target, and i got myself some more magic and pokémon cards from the store bc treat yo self.)
and then after all christmas day things were done, joel and i sat together and watched chuck. it was a nice way to unwind after the day. his tummy was hurting, and i ended up learning that joel can burp on command. which is mildly entertaining but also gross. i just really love joel. so much. i would do anything for him.
(and while we were watching, i finished my aunt's scarf so i was able to give it to her today completed.)
i'm so happy that this christmas has been so amazing. i always get anxious around this time of year because people and things to do and a lot of stress bc party, but yesterday was relaxing and tomorrow will be busy but good, so i'm happy about that too.
yeah. happy.

Thoughts on latest episode
Missy got that good luck and doesn’t have to deal with Dean/Karishma on her tribe. With that out of the way, a deep run (possibly even a win) is more than possible. I still stand by my statement that kicking Chelsea over Karishma was a bad move - the Survivor gods just happened to be with her. More than one winner has recovered from a bad move.
Right now, I see Kellee, Missy, Tommy and Lauren as having the best chance for possible winners. Following them are Jason and Janet. I don’t see Jamal, Dean, Jack, Aaron, Elizabeth or Elaine (only because people have noticed her strong social game - if she makes it to the F3, she might well sweep) winning but I’m not ready to count them out yet. Dan is gross but has a shot if he ends up with the next two on the tier - Noura and Karishma. They have the makings of a perfect FTC goat and everybody on Vokai-Lairo identified this in Karishma - which is why they probably took out Tom. Everybody on new-Lairo is probably dreaming of a Them-Karishma-Noura F3.
Tom exited the game in a classy way. To be quite honest, I never had the impression that Tom was really playing to win. He seemed more in it for the adventure than the million (probably in part because he is already quite wealthy). I’m not a Dean fan but between the two of them, I’m glad it was him that went. No matter how you feel and even if Dean goes next, the money for Dean will just be slightly higher than rich Tom.
As for the blatant Applebee’s advertising, I’m of two minds. On the one hand, sponsorship pays for the show and I’m well aware that if I was on the island having starved for days, I’d get excited for Applebee’s in a way I have literally never gotten for it in my life. On the other hand, do they have to make it so bad with multiple contestants saying how much they love Applebee’s, how unforgettable the experience is? Jesus christ.

Survivor 39: Episode 5
[A] Of course we start the episode with a sad Dean upset that his girlfriend went home.
[S] "I would argue I was the last one [to know]."  Haha, yup.  Chelsea too.
[A] Missy, you didn't keep Dean. You acquiesced to Chelsea instead of Dean so you'd get the votes. [S] "Crap, Dean, I kept you here today. You don't bite the hand that feeds you!"  You did no such thing, you wanted Dean gone.  It was Elizabeth that refused to vote for him who "fed" him.
[S] Why is the other tribe shocked by who gets voted out sometimes?  Why would they assume they know anything about the other tribe's social dynamics? [A] I think they're always shocked when it is someone who looks fit and agile/not someone who is old/fat/etc.
[S] 4 versus 4 isn't really that "lucky." [A] 4 vs. 4 is neither lucky nor unlucky. It's an even split. They will have to work together or someone will have to flip. Or rocks.
[S] This challenge looks exhausting.
[A] Goddamn product placement. [S] "We wanted to make it special.  We tried to find a high-end sponsor but all we could get was Applebee's." [A] This will be the one and only time someone is excited for Applebee's.
[S] "Applebee's is by far my favorite sit down restaurant."  Well that explains a lot.
[S] "THEY CAN TASTE THAT REWARD!"  Pretty sure they can only taste sand. [A] Yum, sand.
Tumblr media
[A] Karishma and Noura tied together and on the same tribe. I pity the rest of the current orange tribe and hope they enjoy tribal. [S] Karishma and Noura on the same tribe.  That sounds unpleasant.
[A] "Noura is pulling Karishma up the hill. That's how you work together!" No, that's how one person carries the other one's dead weight. [S] Respect to Noura; she has no quit in her.
[S] The color coordination of outfits before day one means now that the tribes have switch, you can tell who was on which old tribe.  Kind of interesting.
[A] Alcohol and meat on a mostly empty stomach - they are going to be in pain later.
[S] Yea, we get it.  Product placement. Let’s move on.
[A] The smoke comes through here and keeps all the bugs away (and smothers us in our sleep).
[A] What is going on with purple? Are they sparring? [S] Is this tribe doing a fight club?  What's going on?
[S] As soon as you flip in a 4v4 tribe, you just get voted out.  And if you do somehow make the merge, your old tribe hates you!
[S] "Karishma's been slow in this challenge." "NO I HAVEN'T!" [A] Karishma, you have indeed been slow in this challenge. Jeff don't lie. [S] Does a bit feel like Jeff is picking on her. [A] Truth hurts.
Tumblr media
[S] As I said, this is the season of almost comebacks.
[S] So no one goes to Island of the Idols?  Weird. [A] Does this episode not have an Island of Idols part? Wonder if Rob and Sandra will still be featured at tribal...
[A] Noura: "I don't have a vote, but I still have a say." Um, no, no you don't. Your vote is your say.  [S] Noura is so annoying.
[S] Truth isn't relative, but whatever.
[S] Tom going home.  Lame. [A] WTF. What did Tim do? Did I miss something? Why is Tom going home? This is stupid.

Rebecca Romijn stars as a high society devotee of the devil in need of a virgin sacrifice in Satanic Panic.
A pizza delivery girl runs afoul of a wealthy socialite and her satanic cult in Satanic Panic, a new horror comedy from Director Chelsea Stardust. Yes, it's kind of a bonkers premise, but the trailer is a lot of fun, mining the same cheekily irreverent vein as the Happy Death Day films.
Samantha "Sam" Craft (Hayley Griffith) is a pizza delivery girl with regrets. She took this job for the tips, which turned out to be a bad business decision. "In four hours, my total earnings are an expired Applebees coupon and a sweater that smells like racism," she complains. But when an order comes in from the well-heeled enclave of Mill Basin, she takes on the job, even though its technically outside the joint's delivery zone—apparently on the assumption that she'll finally get a decent tip. What she gets instead is captured by a satanic cult in need of a virgin sacrifice so they can summon Baphomet, a demon from hell, thereby ensuring they stay rich and on top. "Death to the weak, wealth to the strong!" cult leader Danica Ross (Rebecca Romijn) declares.
Sam doesn't seem to be entirely without, er, allies. The skeevy, lecherous Samuel Ross (Jerry O'Connell) helpfully offers to deflower her to save her skin: "No virgin, no sacrifice. Let me protect you." Her best bet is Danica's rebellious daughter Judi (Ruby Modine), who warns, "My mom and her butt buddies are booty-calling Baphomet. And they're not gonna stop til you're strapped to a barbed wire altar." Sure, Danica and her acolytes have all the power, but Sam and Judi have youthful spunk and a keen desire to live. This being a comedy, I like their chances.

Opening Bell: April 12, 2019
Tumblr media
In December, widespread protests and demonstrations arose in Sudan in response to spikes in the price of bread and fuel. The protests were large, well-organized, and the Sudanese military—long a bulwark supporting the rule of President Omar al-Bashir—did not attempt any serious intervention. Over time, the protests grew and evolved into a general airing of grievances against the reign of Bashir, which had persisted since 1989 when he gained power with the support of the military. Bashir’s grasp on power become even more important in 2009 and 2010, when the International Criminal Court in The Hague issued arrest warrants for Omar al-Bashir based on actions carried out by Sudanese troops in the restive Darfur region in the western part of the country, including massacre and rape of civilians. In recent weeks, protestors accumulated around the Sudanese army’s headquarters in the capital of Khartoum and an attempt by the National Intelligence and Security Service to break up the protests was forcibly prevented by Sudanese soldiers. The tipping point was finally reached yesterday, when the military acceded to the demands of the demonstrators and announced that a two-year transitional government would be formed under the defense minister, ending the three decade rule of Bashir. While a civilian transitional government was sought by protestors, the military’s role as kingmaker made the unlikely. Sudan, with the third-largest population in Africa, though stands at a crossroads for the first time in 30 years, and if the military follows through in good faith in its caretaker role and allows civilian elections to occur in two years, it would represent enormous progress for Sub-Saharan Africa.
Eight years ago, Swedish national Julian Assange was accused by the U.S. government of conspiring with former Army Specialist and intelligence analyst Bradley (now Chelsea) Manning with attempt to gain access to classified data. In 2011, seeking to avoid a Swedish arrest warrant based on a sexual assault allegation, Assange ended up in London, knocking on the door of the Ecuadorian Embassy. Ecuador was, in 2011, led by President Rafael Correa, an avowed socialist who opposed American influence in South America in general and Ecuador in particular. Correa, as a means to prevent Assange from being arrested in London on the Swedish arrest warrant and then potentially extradited to the United States on potential charges stemming from violations of the Espionage Act, ordered that his embassy in London admit Assange and give him asylum. International law protects embassies around the world, requiring that host nations treat embassy and consulate grounds as the soil of the nation that occupies it. If British police officers had attempted to enter the Ecuadorian Embassy to arrest Assange, it would have caused an international incident. Instead officers of Scotland Yard held a 24/7/365 vigil outside the embassy, watching to make sure that Assange, who had been granted Ecuadorian citizenship, could not slip out of the embassy and get a flight out of Britain. With the election of a new president in Ecuador, one more amendable to American policy, Assange’s status appeared as though it would change. In recent weeks, the Ecuadorian government of President Lenin Moreno stripped Assange of his citizenship and, shortly after a formal request for extradition by the United States—based on a newly unsealed indictment by a federal grand jury—and Assange was removed from the embassy and arrested by Scotland Yard. The end of one seven year drama is here, but the story of Julian Assange is far from over. The next big event: his actual extradition to the United States and his first appearance in federal court.
Late yesterday afternoon/early evening, the Washington Post broke a story in which it showed that the Trump administration attempted to pressure officials within USCIS to release detained migrants in so-called Sanctuary Cities as a means to seek revenge on political enemies of the president. Sanctuary Cities get their name because local law enforcement—either city police departments, country sheriffs, or both—adopt a policy of not turning over illegal migrants who are detained for unrelated reasons to USCIS for deportation proceedings. The Trump administration has attacked this policy and the cities who adopt them, saying, without evidence, that they allow dangerous criminals who would otherwise be deported, to remain in this country. The emails, obtained by the Post, from Trump administration officials to immigration authorities suggest that migrants who were part of the so-called “caravan” headed to the U.S. border in November 2018, be bused to other cities before their release. One such city mentioned was San Francisco, a well-known subscriber to Sanctuary City doctrine and which is encompassed almost entirely by Rep. Nancy Pelosi’s congressional district. These allegations, which are limited to the incident in November and another in February of this year, are limited in their occurrence, but they nonetheless amount to an unprecedented attempt to place political pressure on what should be a non-political consideration, and for the worst reasons.
In July 1947, a rancher outside of Roswell, New Mexico discovered a tangle mess of equipment on his property, which appeared to belong to the military. He called the local sheriff, who in turn called the commander of the local Army Air Force Base. Somewhere along the way, a reporter for the town’s newspaper called Roswell Army Airfield’s public relations office and was told something about a “flying disc,” being recovered, which subsequently made its way into headlines the following day. This caused a buzz which was notable but quickly waned. The case of the “Roswell Flying Disc” crash become nearly forgotten until two decades later, when a renewed interest and enthusiasm into investigating the existence, source, and depth of government knowledge of UFOs and aliens—the two should be distinguished as UFOs are simply unidentified phenomena stemming from eyewitness recollections—led to the creation of MUFON, or the Mutual UFO Network. MUFON remains the largest and best organized group seeking to uncover whether UFO incidents amount to alien visitors to our planet and, concurrently, the degree to which the government knows of and conceals this visits. In recent years, however, a split has emerged in MUFON, as more outlandish stories have been brought forth by so-called “whistleblowers” who make claims which border on the absurd, the more scientifically inclined members of MUFON have come to openly wonder if these individuals are themselves government plants, meant to undermine what credibility organizations like MUFON have. This summary barely scratches the surface of this conflict and, whatever your own beliefs, I encourage you to read this.
In 2007, a foot, cleaved of its constituent human body, but still nestled within the athletic shoe which its wearer laced up prior to his or her demise, washed up on the shore of British Columbia. The body of water which carried the foot ashore, the Salish Sea, which encompasses Canadian waters and those which make up the Puget Sound that lap at the shore of near Seattle, is one of the largest inland seas in the country. This foot was the first of what has become, as of January 2019, 21 that have washed ashore; 15 on Canadian beaches and 6 on American. Ten of these feet have been paired up, but the rest remain single reminders of a life lost in mysterious, perhaps unknowable, circumstances. Foul play in the form of a new serial killer has been ruled out, and no major airplane crash or shipwreck in the northern Pacific Ocean has gone unreported. The Salish has brought ashore thousands of interested and banal items over the thousands of years that humans have resided nearby, but none so interesting in such a short period of time as the 21 feet clad in sneakers that have done so over the last twelve years. This is a meditation not just on the floating feet, but on the Salish Sea and the infinity and eternity of the Earth’s oceans.
Buffet restaurants have long been considered an absolute expression of Americana: any one person can go to a series counters with heating trays piled high with food: fried chicken, crab legs, rice, bacon, roast beef, prime rib, soup, salad, breadsticks, etc. It is empowering to walk up to what a buffet offers, knowing that you and you alone can decide what combination of foods end up on your plate. This breaks the mold of other restaurant designs, which focus invariably on one type of food: Italian, Mexican (or more accurately Tex-Mex in most places), BBQ, Americana (think Chili’s or Applebees), or even Indian (often famous for having buffets of their own). But in the last decade, buffet style restaurants have, with one notable exception, been failing in this country. There have been health scares to be sure, but many of the failures can be connected to the economic downturn of 2008-2011, during which time individuals ate less at restaurants. This Vox article—an outlet which I am usually loathe to post for a variety of reasons—is much deeper than I expected.
Much as in 2016, where Republicans fielded a large array of candidates all eager to take on the legacy of Barack Obama, Democrats have fielded a now equally large field of candidates hoping to upend President Donald Trump and make him the first incumbent president in nearly two decades to not win a second term in office. There are dangers in having such a large field. One needs only to look at how the opposing personalities of the Republican 2016 field cancelled each other out and gave space for Trump to move to the forefront. But the Center for Politics analyzes how and when a Democratic forerunner could emerge.
 Welcome to the weekend.
