Dominican Republic: Dominican dishes combine African, Spanish, and Taíno (indigenous people living in Cuba, Trinidad, Jamaica, Hispaniola, and Puerto Rico) food flavors using ingredients that are easily accessible in the Caribbean. Dominican staples to try include mangú, made from boiled, green plantains that are mashed and topped with sauteed red onions; fried plantains called tostones; and rice cooked with black or red kidney beans. Passion fruit juice, glass bottles of Refresco Country Club soda, and strong coffee with lots of sugar are favorite beverages. For the truly adventurous, have a slow shot of Mamajuana, a homemade liquor made with rum, red wine, tree bark, spices, and herbs — it’s considered an aphrodisiac.

My Sanctuary: Baguio City

“Take every chance you get in life because some things only happen once.” Great opportunity comes in our way once, and when we miss it, we cannot take back the time. Sometimes we had to look for something that is new to us, searching and having an adventure is such a great experience. Traveling and enjoying the nature is great way to relax and calm our senses. Baguio City is the one of the busiest place in the North. It is also called as the summer capital and most visited tourist destination in our country. As you walked around, soaring green pines filled the city. Thick fog and cold breeze greet you at the morning as you step outside or as you open the window. Baguio City is my sanctuary, a place where I can relax and escape from the reality.

Long journey won’t matter, cinematic view entertains us and filled our eyes with the beauty of nature along the way. But, once we enter the zigzag road (Marcos Highway), the feeling suddenly changes into an exciting, not just it’s a hint that any moment will be in Baguio, instead the road itself. Every turns, ups and down give me a feeling as if I was in a roller coaster ride. If you had a chicken heart, I recommend you to sleep. After an hour, finally the long wait is over: Welcome to the City of Pines, welcome to my sanctuary; welcome to Baguio.

I remember the first time I stepped in Baguio, the hotel we’ve been stayed has no aircon, so I asked my friend, ‘we don’t have an aircon”? They all laugh at me instead of answering my question. And how did I get the answer? Its, already 4 pm, and the sun is still out; shines brightly along with the clouds, but the icy cold breeze started to blow. After an hour, the whole place is now covered with darkness adorned with the twinkling stars; and the funny thing is, I’m already freezing to death.

The first place we visited is the Strawberry Farm in La Trinidad Valley. The climate suits with the place, the ambiance is overwhelming and gives you the relaxation that calms our stressed out senses. The farm is crowded with locals and tourist, enjoying picking and buying different accessories along the stores. A small red oval shaped fruit makes my mouth watery and succumb myself of temptation to suck its sweetness, though it still on its little branches. Picking strawberry is such a great experienced, it gives you the feeling of being light and contented.

Although, I’m not fond watching horror story, I got the chance to see the famous Laperal Mansion. It is famous not just in Baguio, but all over the country due to its chilling story that is featured in different television shows. The house is inspired in a Victorian Architecture. It is made of narra and yakal wood—wooden planks and steep roof. According to the believers, the house is haunted because during the World War II the house was occupied by Japanese soldier and was used as a garrison. The motorists slow down as they pass through as a sign of respect. But now, the Mansion is transformed to a Bamboo Foundation Museum were Filipino art works based on bamboo and woods.

Next stop, is the Burnham Park. It is one of my favourite spot in Baguio. Didn’t you know that this place is named after Daniel Burnham, an American architect who was city planner of Baguio. The parks overlooks the region’s tallest mountain, Mount Kabuyao. The park also played an important role when it served as a place of refuge for the people of Baguio following a devastating earthquake in 1990. The roses, marigolds, daisies and hollyhocks which thrive in Burnham Park’s temperate environment are an unusual sight in the mostly tropical in the Philippines. It includes a man-made lake lagoon, lawns, wooded areas, paved roads, and many flower beds. The place is a field with soaring green pine trees added up with the sun rays passes through its branches and leaves giving the place a mellow dramatic view. Pedaling a personalized bicycle along the park together with the other tourist gives me adrenaline rush. Laughing out with their heart and lungs filled the whole park. I feel like I’m a battery that is now fully charged. Recharge by the environment, recharge by the nature. And if you’re tired on cycling, riding on a boat is great way to rest the tired feet. The first time I ride in a boat, I freaked out and turn my knees into a jelly. But I finally made myself calm and make myself appreciate the beauty of the place. If you don’t know how to paddle, you can hire someone to accommodate your 30 minutes ride with a cheap price (50 pesos).

The most important thing I’ve always looked for every time I visited Baguio is the famous strawberry taho. I prefer to savour it at morning because it serves hot and it gives me warmth I needed on a cold foggy morning. It is a cup made delicate soya bean curd or tofu and custard pearl cutting beat with rich dark syrup. And just like Taho vendors, they’re cashing in on anything with strawberry in it, including ice cream. Clanking of the bells, calling the attention of all passers-by. The creaminess with a little chunks of the strawberry as it melted in your tongue. Ice cream vendors omnipresently pedaling this unique flavour around Baguio City and they can bug you to buy them.

Truly, visiting Baguio is such a great adventure. Getting along with the other people, experiencing their nature and culture is a great opportunity to us. Pampering our self, feeding our soul with a nature experiences is such a great self reward. So, if you had the opportunity, go travel; relax and take a break from the busy city.

Breeze of Baguio

Honestly, Baguio is one of my fond place I wanted to go with. I am very fascinated with her beauty that I'd only seen on the internet, tabloids, and watched on Television which I looked forward to go with which having a chance to see the wonders and of course, to feel within my skin their notorious and very popular cold weather is quite complicated in many aspect: Time, energy and money.

This trip was actually unplanned. When my former team mate asked me if I want to go and hang out with him there, I’d never hold back to say 'yes' cause damn! I wanted and dreaming it for a very long time. It may sound silly and childish to some but I ecstatically accept the offer cause why not? If you think you deserve some getaway, why bother to give it to yourself? I accept the offer despite of making an excruciating decision of going on to this trip without filing a vacation leave, but somehow its worth of risk. I think using only your off-days is not enough, you should allot at least one vacation if you want to explore and experience the Baguio moment for long time. I regret not to prolong my stay because it hypes, cliff-hang and trigger my drive to crave with more trips and exploration but the good thing is making things unplanned and let the time nicking to create abstract on how should be ended was wonderful and extra fun at the same time. I know, in ahead, I will have a chance to roam there with a plenty time. Maybe I will include Sagada as well.

From Cubao terminal 11:40 pm of friday, we bought our tickets pricing Php. 485 ($9.35) for trip to baguio with stopover but you can avail their one way trip or deluxe package with bathroom in the bus which cost a little bit expensive. We arrived in our transient house at almost 5:00 am in the morning, which is not our arrival time making our stay-in fee cost with addition because we check in very early but its not that heavy if you add a little, if you want to really save big, arrived on what the owner expect you to check in. Moreover, the price of transient varies, in our case we come up with Php. 700 ($13.49) per head (1Night stay) (The extension of hour excluded) but I hear some transients offers only ranging Php. 400 (7.71$) per head (1Night). If you good in bargaining, and no contact there to stay lot of strangers within the vicinity of Baguio terminal once you arrive will offer you wide range of their promos.

The Trip

This is tiring yet fun quick side-trip. My friend toured me with some of their basic landmarks and I'm happy with the outcomes, we may not have chance to visit some of their very commend highlight destination due to time constrain, I'm still happy to step on the grounds of their popular landmarks my friend and that also the one brought me there can't hold back to spill his sentiments about some spot in the city which underwent a drastic change making it little underwhelming and he can't help to compare how it should look like before than now. I can't blame him but that's how the process of progression work which make it a little different, and the idea of maintaining the grace and nostalgia of old looks is complex. This sudden shift of change makes it a little 'nah' in some but I’m not mad at all and this trip actually not went bad, fascination and my awe to have here still dominate. Despite of not given a chance to went on most hotspot attraction due to time constraint, Baguio still satisfies me. If you just want a little break like this just to cleanse your mind with some positivity and stressed out yourself with pressure of the world, probably this place and little time given is 'must to go' action plan. This is quick and penny saving trip. 🤗

One of the factors to enjoy Baguio if you have plans to go there is to pick a perfect place to stay in. My friend is very good on choosing a perfect transient which is convenient with cheap price. If chose a place near the vicinity of some attractions you have a easy access to their popular places making it more walk-in friendly but if you want to experience deluxe lifestyle while staying here, hotel accommodation is widely accessible. In our case, with simple needs and demand, transient is a great choice. Squad getaway is also perfect with transient option which make it a lot cheaper than less than two people.

Burnham Park is like a usual classic park we grown with and usually go to place to have some fitness routines or meet somebody but for me, this place has a extra-special characteristic which make it a little different with typical park I already went in. Its already given that city parks created to have perfect blast of fun or to have a family get together and picnic with your friends, but what astonished me is how this park maintain her solemnity despite of busy atmosphere. Parks usually annoys me when it became crowded; full of PDA's and loud noises. But here? I don't know, it's relaxing, maybe the cold weather here added up the factor of calmness. Is there any scientific explanation about it or it is just me being appreciative and naive about the place? But what matters? This place is perfect to begin your mood.

Mines View Park is also fun. The overview of city below and their fuzzy haze gives it a little charm of enchantment. Some local residence there use the opportunity of goers having a shot to take some photographs to promote their local and traditional brands such as clothing and snacks. Do I get exaggerated when I see it like I get gaga and insane when I saw the place? Honestly, no but it's good and her beauty is understatement. Perfect place to begin your over the top view selfies.

Baguio Botanical Garden the place is instagram friendly and if you are nature lover, maybe you will get in love. But I don't see any astonishing there except with the cave close for public.

The second thing you have to look after is the Church Bell. I had much fun there. I saw some kids doing some basic traditional Chinese martial arts. Though they still considered as novice in the practice, I see their dedication to learn the discipline of that kind of exhibition. Now I’m prepping myself to stretch some muscle so I could go along with them, kidding!

And oh! The Mansion which is known as summer residence of Philippine President wayback. So far, the gate is more accessible for the public viewing and good place to shot some angle with their wide mountain like landscape.

Baguio is also know for mysteries infrastructure involve in America War. The infamous Laperal House which is ‘allegedly’ haunted by their former residence which many known Local TV shows already featured it and some of their claims that the place has a level of paranormal activity which is not totally validated despite of some clear and unexplained footage.

The Diplomat Hotel is also one of those 'haunted' place for Paranormal geeks. This place allegedly haunted where this 'ghost nun' caught on camera by one of the goers doing a montage of her travels.

There's a lot of places to go in Baguio and lot of them is very promising. If I had a perfect chance to go back, I'll definitely redocument that on this blog and here's are some things I'd missed and maybe you should try when you stop by there:

The good sheppered goodies and their infamous ube jams! Which unfortunately I haven't chance to avail due to Yam supply scarcity and the effect of climate change. Sad.

The strawberry picking in La Trinidad which is fun according to some hearsays.

The Night Market with great deals and perfect time to buy our ultimate OOTD with affordable prices.

While it’s been a popular travel destination for years, due to an economic embargo, Americans haven’t been able to visit easily until now.

However what draws people to the tropical Caribbean island of Cuba is much more than beaches and antique 1950’s cars, although there are plenty of those.

In Cuba you can wander bustling city streets, go hiking in the mountains, learn about the history of tobacco, or simply soak up the country’s 1950’s time-warp appeal. Get a taste of what it’s like to live in a socialist country.

While Cuba can sometimes be a confusing and challenging place for many travelers, I invite you to give it a try anyway, and experience some Cuban magic for yourself.

Cuba is generally pretty affordable, especially compared to other Caribbean Islands, yet is more expensive than other parts of Latin America like Mexico or Central American nations. With a special 2nd currency just for tourists, you’ll be forced to pay tourist prices most of the time.

Budget travelers can survive on around $50 USD per day.

Cuba’s local currency is the Cuban Peso (CUP- ₱) and it translates to ₱24 CUP for $1 USD. However as a tourist, you’ll be using Cuba’s secondary currency just for tourists, the Cuban Convertible Peso (CUC – $) which is pegged to the US Dollar. So $1 CUC = $1 USD.

You will need to exchange US dollars for CUC, but there is a special 10% penalty fee for this service. So it’s often cheaper to exchange Euros, Canadian Dollars, British Pounds, or Mexican Pesos for CUC instead.

If you’re an American, you still can’t use your credit cards or ATM cards in Cuba. They won’t work because of the economic sanctions in place.

So you MUST exchange cash to fund your whole trip unless you’re on a pre-paid tour. The other option is buying a foreign pre-paid debit card from banks in Canada or Mexico.

There’s an official currency exchange booth outside the airport in Havana. You can exchange your leftover CUC back to US dollars (or whatever) when you leave the country too.

When I traveled through Cuba for 10 days in 2016, I spent a total of $900 for an average of $90 USD per day.

Some of the things I splurged on included renting a car for more freedom to explore the island on our own. Rental cars in Cuba aren’t cheap — ours was $83 CUC per day (which we then split 4 ways with friends).

Scuba diving, tickets to Havana’s famous Tropicana Show, cigars, and a classic car city tour were some other activities I chose to include in my own trip. Your own choices will affect your travel budget in Cuba.
