one thing i’ve noticed while replaying abyss is how jade has 100% faith in anise’s competency. first he’s like ‘you know where to go’ and she does know wordlessly where to meet. then he tells luke and tear that anise has already taken care of ion before even knowing what happened. then when she falls off the ship he’s like ‘lol it’s okay she’s anise’. then when glen mcgovern tells him he opened anise’s letter jade says ‘it’s ok, nothing in there is a problem for you to see’ because he knew in advance that anise is smart enough to censor any mention of the imperial letter (and she did!). and then he says he knows where to go next because he trusts anise has already gone there. this 13 year old has the fate of the world on her shoulders which is pretty depressing but damn she has got it under control.
#🌻#one more thing i like is that jade scolds ion in cheagle woods in a very father-like manner#reminds me of when elder mcgovern says that jade only scolds people that he respects#jade is pretty terrible to the rest of the kids but his relationship with anise and ion is so endearing to me#(he's still not the best to anise but i still find it very endearing lol)#ion is definitely the favourite kid#i still think jade deserved to be killed in the grusweep though. that was fucking awesome.

Yo, since you brought it up, what's the interpretation of Abyss's ending you like the most?
Going for blood, huh, anon? I'll bite!
I'm on the side of 'technically I think it should be Asch in Luke's body' side even if I acknowledge it's ultimately ambiguous.
The Contamination sidequest, of course, is the principle foundation for this argument, as it spells out pretty clearly: Asch will die, but Asch will assume Luke's body as a backup. Luke will remain in body but not spirit, further twisting the knife to Jade, who no longer would want his dream of 'replicas as a replacement body' to come true as he wished for Nebilim.
We also see an example of the effect with Star in Ortion cavern. The group comes back to see that the original cheagle has died, and the replica remains. But when Jade interviews the cheagle via Mieu, he finds out that it is the original in the replica's body, who felt weak, passed out, and woke up in another body.
More arguably, but I also might look to Jade's immediate response after he learns of Asch's death. He starts asking Luke about how it feels and all that, likely trying to get a gauge on what's happening, if there's any chance Luke is escaping the Big Bang, etc. He wants Luke to escape this with his life, no matter how dismal the odds even without Asch's death.
...And he doesn't seem pleased with the response he gets.
There's also his response at Tataroo itself, which, okay, very arguable, but to me is not a pleased look from Jade. I'm not claiming to be any kind of expert on reading emotions, but Jade's to me looks like one more of grief and/or disappointment than of happiness, especially in the anime, which could have more expressiveness than the original PS2 graphics in a game that had some notably poorly cutscenes.
And while yes, the mysterious figure does have more visual hints to Luke than Asch, and does reference a 'promise', I will say that to the latter both of the redheads were chucking around promises to everyone and is ambiguous. Luke's promise to Guy, to Tear, Asch's to Luke, etc.
Also, I just think it could be a unique and sad ending if Asch, who has utterly loathed replicas and the concept of one, from Van's grooming and his own trauma regarding Luke's replacement, finds himself a 'replica' in the new world, in his counterpart's body, and has to start trying to figure out what to do and who to be in the new world while puppeting around what's effectively the corpse of another person. It's just uniquely horrifying a concept that I would have loved to see explored. Heck, maybe even a postgame or game about the Jade Gang dealing with the impending fonon crisis while maybe trying to find a way to get Luke back and all the drama that could result would have been fun.
...But, as always, this is a very cursory summary of some of the most common arguments for Asch. We could dissect the Contamination Effect and Big Bang and all that all day, but to me, I personally don't see any evidence that it is not working as prescribed on Eldrant, or 'reversed' as some people argue. The one example we see is it working as intended, and Jade doesn't seem all that pleased when it seems like it's starting to kick up with Luke.
However, I'd like to throw a much rarer argument into the works as a thing to consider, just for fun.
What if it's not Asch in Luke's body or the reverse, or a merging of the two into one mind/body...But Lorelei?
To this, I'd like to point out that Lorelei has a sworn duty to answer the Grand Fonic Hymn of Yulia. And what was Tear signing right before this mysterious person popped up randomly in a field when Luke nor Asch show a particular skill in stealth? Well I mean Luke says he's good at hide and seek but still
Uh-huh, Grand Fonic Hymn. This could also explain the 'promised' quote. Lorelei is fulfilling its covenant with Yulia in heeding her descendant's call.
The mysterious person's speech and behavior, for however short we see it, is...ethereal? For lack of a better word? Detached? Both Luke and Asch are very emotional people and don't tend to speak in such a even, neutral tone. Lorelei, however, is a fonic sentience (well, so is Luke, but Luke is a mini chunk of Lorelei) and is not human at the end of the day. What few lines we do get from it in game are 'indirect' and otherwise formatted in a manner humans don't usually use when speaking. To me, the more detached 'This place has a nice view of Hod' compared to anything Luke or Asch might have said normally, even a greeting, is more aligned with Lorelei's potential behavior.
So yeah. Perhaps it's Lorelei, come to Auldrant after heeding Tear's call, perhaps in its' scions' visages, attempting to honor them both by assuming elements of both now that they (or at least Luke) have re-assimilated into the greater whole of Lorelei. Lorelei certainly seems to like its scions.
In the end I can just summarize: scientifically, I think it's Asch, canonically, it's ambiguous. No matter what side of the debate one is on, I dislike people trying to insist that it is absolute fact that x happened. I think part of the ambiguity is intended to reflect the fact that the Score is gone, the future is no longer set. Notice also how all the text boxes are gone after the Score is repealed. What they're saying- what's happening is no longer has a single canonical answer. So even if I do think more of the rules of the Abyss world point to Asch, it's ultimately up in the air.

TALES OF THE RAYS: ION’S 3RD SKIT (ENGLISH TRANSLATION)
This is a direct continuation to Sync’s Side.
Since Ion’s side was finally put up on the Rays Wiki, I can actually take a crack at it now. Here is the Ion side of the skit released with the debut of his xMA \ Dual Mystic Arte with Sync. I got the screenshots from 八雲貴大 on YT.
[ SYNC AND ION ARE LEAVING THAT MEETING ]
Ion: How do you think that went, Sync? What did you think of Ix’s gathering? *
どうでしたか、シンク。イクスサロンの感想は。
Sync: It was a waste of time. The end result of thought experiments and harboring delusions is a mental breakdown, isn’t it? That’s what the Necromancer is for.
時間の無駄だね。妄想と思考実験のなれの果ては精神の崩壊ってやつなんじゃない？こういうのは死霊使いの得意分野でしょ。
Ion: Hehe…
フフフ･･････。
Sync: What?
何？
Ion: Jade said something very similar to you. He said: “Don’t you think you should take a break from your bad thoughts and pay attention to where you’re going?”
ジェイドも同じようなことを言っていましたよ。「下手の考え休むに似たり、もっと足下を見た方がいいのではありませんか」って。
Ion: Jade doesn’t have much interest in the humanities.
ジェイドは人文科学には興味がないそうです。
Sync: How about that. Well, I’ve already thought about this plenty while I was falling into the Planet’s Core.
どうだかね。考え尽くして一度深淵にでも落ちたから避けてるんじゃないの。
[ LUKE AND LIBERA ENTER ]
Luke: —What the hell are you guys talking about? The meeting is over and you’re still talking about hard stuff.
――何だよ、お前ら。サロンが終わってもまだ難しい話をしてるのかよ。
Sync: You poor thing. You were made with a degraded brain, it’s natural you find this kind of talk difficult.
可哀想に。お前は脳みそが劣化して生まれたからこの程度の話を難しく感じるんだよ。
Libera: Sync, it’s not good to tell people they’re inferior! Anise said so.
シンク！人に劣化なんて言ったらダメなんだよ。アニスが言ってた。
Sync: Shut up. We’re not people, anyway. We’re replicas.
うるさいな。どうせ相手は人じゃなくてレプリカだ。
Libera: Replicas are people, too. Claire told me that we all share the same heart that thinks peach pie is delicious. Now, apologize to Luke.
レプリカも人なの。クレアが言ってた。ピーチパイのことを美味しいと思う心は同じなんだよ。ほら、ルークに謝るの。
Sync: I told you to shut it. *sighs* Whatever, I’m sorry for telling the truth.

Libera: Sorry, Luke. Come on, Sync. As a reward, let’s get some sweets from Nevan.

Ion: I agree… Or, well, I do think that Sync might have changed a little.
そうですね･･････。いえ、でも少し変わったかも知れません。
Luke: You think?
そうか？
Ion: I think that Sync would have refused to even be in the same room as me back in our original world.
元の世界にいた頃のシンクなら、僕と同じ空間にいることすら拒絶したのではないかと思うんです。
Ion: But now, Sync seems to be starting to make compromises with himself.
けれど今のシンクは、少しだけ譲歩してくれているように感じます。
Luke: I guess that’s because we have no reason to be hostile anymore.
今は敵対する必要がないから、とかかな。
Ion: Yes…that might be right.
そう･･････なんでしょうか。
Ion: I don’t know exactly why he’s changed, but I’m glad. I feel like Sync is starting to find more meaning in being himself, rather than just being another one of our original’s replicas.
理由はわかりませんが、嬉しいです。シンクがシンク自身に、被験者イオンのレプリカであるということ以上の意味を見出し始めているような気がして。
Luke: I hope so. I feel like I’m starting to finally feel like I am who I am because of my friends—you and everyone else.
そうだといいな。俺は仲間が―――イオンやみんながいてやっと、俺が俺であるって思えるようになったから。
Ion: Including me? But I haven’t…
僕も、ですか？僕は何も･･････。
Luke: What are you talking about? You’re super important.
何言ってんだよ。イオンはすげえ重要だぜ。
Luke: After all, no matter how many replicas there are of Ion, no matter how many Luke replicas were made, you and I are the only ones who met in the Cheagle Woods.
だってイオンが何人いても、ルークのレプリカが何人いても、チーグルの森で出会ったのは俺とお前だけなんだから。
Ion: !!
Luke: That’s what makes you special.
だからさ、特別なんだ。
Ion: You’re right. You and I are proof of each other’s unique existences. Thank you, Luke!

* NOTE: the actual term Ion uses is “Ix’s salon”, which confused me until I found out that a salon can also be an “informal gathering of artists at a notable figure’s house.”

"Magilou says I'm supposed to tell you guys that..."
"The Sorcerer's Ring Toss is back! I'm really excited to have you guys play this year! I got some new prizes!" Well. More accurately, he'd had some help from Ion. The flower crowns he'd made the previous year had made a return, but the new prizes were little cheagle plushes and even a couple of liger plushes! Ion had helped him pick them out before they and Jade had arrived at the festival.

Dogs of Auldrant
Throughout the game, there are many different dog models seen in ports and in cities. This is a collection of as many as I could find and my best guess of what breed they may be! Long post!
There are four main interactable dogs that use the same floppy-eared model but slightly recolored. These models you can see in the towns, ports, and bays. Other "dog" models (three) can be seen in special locations.
The first dog is the most common model seen in the game with four instances. To me, it honestly looks like a Borzoi. These dogs are also known as the Russian Wolfhound. As the name suggests, these dogs were used to help hunt wolves. This model can be seen in Akzeriuth, Belkend Port, Engeve, and Keterburg. While this dog can truly be anything from looks alone, using some other clues might help with this guess. The enemies around the locations of these dogs do help. Wolves are common around the Cheagle woods, Deo Pass, west Aberrian plains (Belkend area), Daath area, and Keterburg area. Almost everywhere wolves are, these dogs appear (except for Daath which does not have this dog). Borzois also can do well in cooler climates but will need a warm place for heavy winters.
The second is seen three times (from what I can find). It looks most like a Rough Collie (or a collie of some sort), specifically one with bent ears (though that detail is just because of the reused model). These dogs are bred for farm work like herding. This model can be found in Port Sheridan, Sheridan, and St Binah. No other dog that I have found in the game has such a distinct white band around its neck. While I do not know why this breed appears here rather than a town like Engeve, it is interesting to see another color pattern!
The third coloration is tied in the middle with three instances. It looks either like a Labrador Retriever or a Golden Retriever. Both these dogs were bred to retrieve game and swimming. This model can be found in Daath (Fourth Stone Monument), Grand Chokmah. And St. Binah. Locations do not help much to pin down this breed. Grand Chokmah is on the water, Daath near the ocean, and St. Binah is nowhere near water. In general, Labs and Goldens are popular breeds of dogs, number 2 and 3 of 2023 according to the AKC. So, I would not be surprised if this dog happened to be one of these two breeds.
The fourth dog also shows up three times. This dog is the most recognizable out of all of them, a Dalmatian. These dogs were bred to walk alongside coaches and help hunt. This model can be found in Baticul (by the docks), Keterburg Bay, and Daath Port. Location can somewhat help as these dogs appear by the docks. These locations, aside from Baticul, require a fair distance of travel to reach their respective cities. It makes sense that these dogs are around locations where people need to travel once they land.
There are three other "dogs" in the game. Peko is a named dog, and he is a Shiba Inu, just like his owner’s name. Honestly, the most on the nose dog there is on this list! The second “dog” is in the Sheridan Music Box house. It appears to be some sort of bulldog, my best guess is a French Bulldog! I say “dog” because I am unsure if this is a model for the machine or an actual dog. It doesn’t bark, whine, or anything. It only spins on this machine, and to my knowledge does not appear anywhere else. The third sort-of “dog” is an enemy in the game, the Theor Forest Watcher Wolf. It appears to have a collar and is domesticated for the Malkuth Military, so might as well add this ferocious good boy on the list!
I did not find any dogs in Belkend (city), Yulia City, Chesedonia, Kaitzur (town nor port), or the Desert Oasis. So, this is all I have for dogs. I did not search through every building or area. Feel free to add what you think these breeds are or if I missed anything! In the end, they're all certified good dogs!

this is my insane opinion but when jade "jokes" about eating mieu the cheagle as emergency rations and then he's like "no seriously im not joking" i think to some degree he is but i also think jade would be the kind of guy who would have 0 qualms about killing the weakest amongst them for emergency rations if they were starving in a blizzard somewhere

#🌻#thinking of how tear gets assigned 'the one braincell haver'#and how this is often a fandom thing but. while compiling her dialogue yesterday i realized.#there's SO MUCH explanation and stuff that tear shouldn't do that she does anyway#like. there are other people in the party equipped to explain fonons to luke or jump in to say 'dont do that it's dangerous'#but it's always her! well sometimes it's guy but 90% of the time it's her.#and it made me really sad! this girl is BRIMMING with silly but suppressing it#but while it's something that the game itself applies to her without fandom perception#i feel like the game does a better job of recognizing the tragedy of it better than we do sometimes#specifically via natalia. there's a lot of dialogue with natalia telling tear not to think as a soldier#but as a person with desires and fears.#tear i love you i love you one day you will never have to fight and you'll have your lovely place that you'll decorate with very cute items#and you'll have pet cheagles that love being brushed by you and you will put ribbons on their sweet little heads#and you'll have a drawer full of different ribbons of all sorts of colors and designs#and you'll color coordinate with your pets because you too will have all sorts of cute outfits!#i love you tear so much!!#THIS WAS A JOKE POST HOW DID THIS GET AWAY FROM ME

The Cheagle is a lovable canine with a lovable name. It’s actually a cross between two inversely cute tykes – the Beagle and the Chihuahua. Beagles are notorious for their joyful and friendly dispositions, and Chihuahuas are known for their “ small canine with a big personality ” personas.
The Cheagle takes some of the bad and a lot of the good from both of her parents and is a unique canine that makes an awful family pet.
Charles is a small tyke that is generally shorthaired, but because there are eggheaded Chihuahuas, there might be some variations in the length of the fleece. Depending on which parent they take after the most, they might have a long Beagle conk and long, droopy cognizance or a shorter Chihuahua nose and lower triangular cognizance.
Charles might be tricolored like the Beagle in white, brown, and black, but they might also be nearly any solid color.

Breed Characteristics
History
The Cheagle is a mongrel canine, a cross between the Chihuahua, a bitsy companion canine, and the Beagle, a small shadowing canine.
The Beagle is a rabbit tracking canine that has been a popular beast both as a stalking companion and a family canine for several centuries, and it has been noted by name constantly in jottings from the 15th century on.
There have been many changes in the Beagle strain since they first came popular, still, including a period of time in which a bitsy interpretation of the Beagle known as a “ Pocket ” Beagle was bred.
The strain norms were set in the late 1800s, around the same time that The Beagle Club of England and the National Beagle Club in the United States were being formed and were honored in the Hound order by the American Kennel Club in 1885.
The ultramodern Chihuahua’s full history is unknown, and DNA testing of the strain indicates ties to the ancient Techichi that was native to Mexico and kept as faves and religious offerings by the indigenous Aztec people.
What’s clear is that some of the foremost tykes that could be linked as Chihuahuas were set up in Mexico in the medial 1800s, although at the time this bitsy strain didn’t have a sanctioned name.
merchandisers in Mexico, largely from the state of Chihuahua, began dealing these movable and companionable creatures to callers from other countries.
In 1904, the first Chihuahuas were honored by the American Kennel Club, and just thirty were registered by 1913.
the moment they’re listed as the 30th most popular strain in the United States with well over,000 Chihuahuas registered with the AKC in 2012, and also enjoy great fashionability in numerous other countries around the world, including the UK, the Philippines, and Australia.
The Cheagle is a slightly larger and further gregarious doggy than the Chihuahua while retaining its defensive and pious nature.
