one thing i’ve noticed while replaying abyss is how jade has 100% faith in anise’s competency. first he’s like ‘you know where to go’ and she does know wordlessly where to meet. then he tells luke and tear that anise has already taken care of ion before even knowing what happened. then when she falls off the ship he’s like ‘lol it’s okay she’s anise’. then when glen mcgovern tells him he opened anise’s letter jade says ‘it’s ok, nothing in there is a problem for you to see’ because he knew in advance that anise is smart enough to censor any mention of the imperial letter (and she did!). and then he says he knows where to go next because he trusts anise has already gone there. this 13 year old has the fate of the world on her shoulders which is pretty depressing but damn she has got it under control.

wilbur hates the wilderness survival adventure. tomys says it's time to suck it up and try. his paranoia then tomys being like *checks nonexistent watch* can we do fire things now. wilbur just broke down .2 seconds in and tomys 'i've done this randomly lost in the wilderness before' ione finds the wood. ah this is great. shows cool character things as well as a little forced bonding already fantastic.
'When i was a kid", Wilbur bit back the urge to remind him he was still a child' the banter is there i can feel it. not there yet but ah well i can dream.
the leg. yeah tomys is way more experienced than wil in this at least in terms of how to handle a wound. but of course the history shit helps - great 'application of skills' wilbur. techno would be proud. anyways splint making time.
'i'm not going to leave you willum' aw thanks tommy. promoting the brotherly bonding i see. yeah it's because he saved your life but you're just a kind boy and trying to tell paranoia supreme over here that you're dragging him back there.
wilbur keeps getting surprised. bro you brushed him off basically immediately as a naive mischievous little brat. only you to blame for that part. then you jump into finally seeing him as being worth the effort in getting close because you had to actually be in a life-threatening situation to truly start the bonding. try seeing beyond your own self-gain for a little bit.
ayo phil POV???? man this guy in general is my favourite, like yeah i appreciate the well-written wilbur but phil's always gonna be my blorbo no matter how fucked up he is. my mans loves his kid. ooooh boy whoever sent the bandits is fucked now. phil's going to tear them apart haha. - :D
man when you phrase it like that it really is hilarious. wilbur really did just break down and lose his mind .2 seconds into being lost in the wilderness. tomys is 13 and handling this shit better than the 19 year old. he's such a cushy palace kid 😭
oh the banter will get there
see kids history tests can be very relevant to the real world
"paranoia supreme" 😭😭
to be fair wilbur wasn't just dismissing tommy for being a little shit (although that was a lot of it) but also because he's been supporting niki for the throne his entire life. he's definitely been peeved at the idea of the plans the two of them have had since childhood being ruined so quickly
PHIL POV YESSSS I really do love writing in his pov he's such a fun character to explore and rose!phil is especially interesting for me. phil's going to kill a bitch for this :)

4/5 stars
Okay, this was muuuuuuuuch better than A Study in Drowning. Like, I was actually kind of scared it'd be a double-flop for me after my disappointment with the other book, but thank goodness it wasn't. It started off as strong as A Study in Drowning did for me—like, I wouldn't say SUPER strong, but I was following the plot with mild interest—and it continued to be equally interesting.
I'd like to preface something: I AM AN IDIOT. Somehow, I had it in my brain that the Nightmare was the love interest, so when the actual love interest popped up, I didn't care and was wondering why the heroine kept mooning over him. I thought he was the second love interest or something but by the time I was one-third into the story, I was like, SOMETHING IS NOT RIGHT. So I went and Googled reviews of the book and to say I was flabbergasted that the Nightmare WASN'T the love interest would be an understatement.
I was soooooooooo disappointed at first, lmao. I mean, Ravyn just seemed to be the classic brooding love interest. Even until the end when I had long gotten over this revelation, I didn't care much for the romance. I don't particularly dislike it either, though; I'm mostly indifferent. I think the problem for me was that I actively disliked the romance in A Study in Drowning, but I do feel a vague fondness for Ravyn and the heroine. That said, some of the PDA the leads were exhibiting was making me cringe. Maybe I'm just not a fan of PDA; I remember this being a small complaint of mine with Love Theoretically.
(What is with me and my shit memory? I can't remember the heroine's name. I always forget the heroine's name because the book's in her POV and I just meld with her brain. Okay. I refused to Google it and sat here thinking and I finally recalled her name: Elspeth. If I'm wrong, I'm wrong.)
I still feel that the Nightmare was a much more fascinating character than Ravyn but whatever. Also, I am especially fond of Elm. Some of his banter was so amusing, specifically when an anxious Elspeth was sitting on the horse with him, and he was like: "Trees. Could your arms get any tighter? It's like I'm wearing a corset." (This is not quoted verbatim.) I really hope we get more of him in the next book because he's one of my favourite characters (him and Ione????? I've got my eye on them 👀). I must state, though, that I don't LOVE anyone. They're all just alright. It's ridiculously hard for me to get invested in characters, I'm beginning to realise. My loss.
Anyway. The world-building is done rather decently for my taste. I don't get paragraph after paragraph of info-dump; it's all integrated very smoothly into the plot. THIS is how you do world-building – I keep thinking of Crescent City and I get shudders. (I must fairly add that A Study for Drowning also had really nice world-building.) The concept of cards with magic was fun, though when I think about it, nothing much REALLY happens throughout the story. They were supposed to collect three cards to complete the deck, and the only real action is claiming the first card. The second card was just handed over by the heroine's father, and the third still hasn't been collected yet. The fact that the word count can be stretched so far and NOT feel dull is honestly quite interesting.
I sort of delayed reading this until the sequel came out. But I'm still hemming and hawing about reading the next book right away. The thing with fantasy is that it's always best to read the sequel before I forget the world-building, but I seriously don't feel invested enough to continue immediately. I want to explore something new already. ;w; I wish I was like half of BookTok and could be a fraction of how madly invested they seem in this series. Like, I kid you not, this book was BLOWING UP.
Nonetheless, I enjoyed this moderately, and that's good enough for me. I definitely plan to read the sequel at some point. The reviews on BookTok are really good, and a lot are saying it's better than the first. I hope to find out for myself… eventually.

I Just Can’t Wait To Be Free
Fandom: Thunderbirds Rating: Gen Genre: Family Characters: Gordon, Scott
And another fic for @gumnut-logic‘s #irrelief!  The prompt used here is “Any characters – trapped in a lift/elevator” from @darkestwolfx
When Scott gets stuck, Gordon’s the only one around - too bad he can’t stop laughing.
“Stop laughing.”
Scott sounded tired, frustrated, and just about ready to throttle the nearest unfortunate brother – who just so happened to be him – but that didn’t stop Gordon cackling loudly at his eldest brother’s misfortune.
International Rescue had the best rescue gear in the world.  International Rescue had access to some of the best technology in the world. International Rescue currently had one of their operatives trapped in a lift and no-one could figure out how to get him out.
Not that Gordon was trying particularly hard, he had to admit.  If the situation was different, then of course he’d be donning his Rescue Mode and trying to work out the fastest and most efficient method of extraction.  But they weren’t on a rescue, they weren’t even on the mainland – any mainland – and Scott didn’t need to be anywhere in a hurry, so Gordon felt quite justified in cackling at his brother’s current situation.
It wasn’t every day Scott got stuck in his own launch chute, after all.  Luckily, he was returning from a rescue, not the other way around, so there was no real urgency to get him out.  There was the concern that if Thunderbird One’s launch chute was malfunctioning then it would need a complete service before anyone stepped foot in it, and Scott would have to take the long way down to the hangar until it was deemed fit to use again (complete with pulling on his spare uniform by hand, which Gordon did not envy), but that was a concern for later.
Mostly because Scott was still inside, Brains was at a conference the other side of the world with Moffie, and Virgil was still in the air with an ETA of another hour.  Kayo was off doing Kayo-things who knew where, Grandma was still unaware in the kitchen as she conjured up another inedible horror, Alan was with Virgil and John was off-planet.
John and EOS had tried to remotely fix the chute, but it quickly became apparent that it was a mechanical issue, and therefore nothing that could be done by remote control wizardry. An ion wrench was probably the tool for the job, and even if Gordon didn’t have a ban on touching Virgil’s tools (and no-one went near Brains’ without strictest supervision), fixing errant launch tubes was rather different to repairs on a submarine.
Hey, they all had their specialities.  Gordon’s just happened to be not this.
So, really, there was nothing for Gordon to do except sit and laugh as Scott growled at him from the other side of the false wall.  He’d even offered to stream Into The Unknown to Scott’s comm to relieve his boredom until Virgil got back, but that had been rejected.
Virgil had been alerted to the situation, at least.  He’d told Scott that he was hurrying back and had got an irritated snipe at the sluggish speed of Thunderbird Two in response.  Not Scott’s smartest move – a private message to Gordon had informed him that if Scott was going to be like that then he could wait because Virgil was certainly not going to push his beautiful ‘bird for the sake of an ungrateful brother who was at no risk of harm except to his ego.
Hence the hour ETA.
Scott was too smart to not realise that was not Two’s top speed, but no apologies had come out from the chute – Gordon knew those would come later, once he was free and no longer stressed out from being trapped in a small area for who-knew-how-long.  Scott wasn’t claustrophobic, not by any means, but there was always something about being stuck in a place with no way out that got to people.
They’d all done enough cave-in rescues or similar to know that one.
That was why Gordon was laughing.  It might annoy the heck out of his brother, but as long as he could hear a voice, Scott knew he wasn’t alone, hadn’t been left there.  Gordon might not be able to get Scott out, but he could make sure he knew he hadn’t been forgotten.
Oh, Scott would never thank him for it, of course.  Scott had a heavy dislike for being mocked, and there were other ways he could have made his continuous presence know – his usual methods of calming rescuees on missions, light-hearted banter and stories – but hey, he was a younger brother.  He had a duty to be irritating sometimes.
“Gordon, your Ed impression is not helping.”
Gordon stopped laughing immediately, squinting at the (currently not) swivelling fake wall between him and Scott.
“Did you just make a Lion King reference?” he demanded.  He knew Scott liked pre-millennium movies, and the Lion King, despite its lack of anything space or plane related, had always been a family favourite. They’d seen it several times on family movie nights.
Was it his imagination, or was the answering silence a little apprehensive?  “Scoooooootty.”
Silence continued to answer him, and a hyena-like grin slowly spread across his face.
“Iiiiiii’m gonna be a mighty king,” he started, leaning his back against the wall just next to the rotating section.  “So enemies beware!”
“Gordon,” Scott complained.  He just laughed.
“Come on, Scott,” he encouraged, before singing the lines again.
“No.”
“You can do Simba’s part instead?” he offered.
“No.”
“Scoooooott.”
“No.”
Well, if he wanted to be a spoilsport…
“I’m gonna be a mighty king,” he repeated again.  “So enemies beware!”  Then he deepened his voice.  “Well, I’ve never seen a king of beasts with quite so little hair!”  Too deep.  Ah well.
“I’m gonna be the main event, like no king was before!  I’m brushin’ up on lookin’ down; I’m workin’ on my ROAR!”
Still silence from the chute, so he cleared his throat and tried another pitch.
“Thus far, a rather uninspiring thing.”
That was better.
“Oh, I just can’t wait to be king!”
Ah, now this was going to get a little tricky solo.  He cleared his throat again.
“You’ve rather a long way to, young master, if you think-  No-one sayin’ ‘do this’-”
“Now when I said that…” Scott’s voice finally broke through the sullen silence the other side of the wall and Gordon allowed himself a victory punch.  He knew Scott wouldn’t be able to stay silent the whole time. Little brother’s intuition.  He lifted his voice higher for Nala’s line.
“No-one sayin’ ‘be there’!”
“What I meant was…”  It sounded rather like Scott was taking out his exasperation through Zazu.  Well, it was in character.
“No-one sayin’ ‘stop that’!”
“What you don’t realise…” Gordon hoped John was recording this. Oh who was he kidding, of course he was.
“No-one sayin’ ‘see here’!”
“Now see here!”  That sounded familiar.
“Free to run around aa-all day!”
“Well, that’s definitely out.”
“Free to do it aall myyyyy waaayyyy!”  Gordon finished the section with a blemish, and quietened, waiting.  Question and answer phrases were one thing, but there was no guarantee that Scott would continue into the next section.
Big brother didn’t disappoint.
“I think it’s time that you and I arranged a heart to heart.”
Gordon’s hyena-grin settled into something more genuinely pleased as he picked up the answer, tapping lightly on the false wall for emphasis.
“Kings don’t need advice from little hornbills for a start!”
“If this is where the monarchy is headed count me out!” Scott barked, answering knocks in time with the words.  “Out of service, out of Africa, I wouldn’t hang about!  This child is getting wildly out of wiiing!”  Scott was no Virgil – none of them were – but he could hold a tune when he put his mind to it.  With nothing else to do except knock on his side of the wall to emphasis certain words (and Gordon was fairly sure the ‘child’ he was actually thinking of was not a certain fictional lion cub, but maybe an annoying but lovable squid instead), now was a perfect time to put his mind to it.
“Oh I just can’t wait to be king!” Gordon replied.  “Everybody look left!  Everybody look right!”  He whipped his head around, even though there was no-one there to- oh, hello John!  He gave his older brother a cheeky wave, and got an eyeroll for his trouble although the spaceman stayed mercifully quiet. “Everywhere you look I’m, standing in spotlight!”
“Not. Yet.” Scott answered, biting it out in a perfectly-Zazu fashion, and Gordon grinned triumphantly at John before launching into the choral line.  To his absolute delight, Scott joined in.
“Let every creature go for broke and sing!  Let’s hear it in the herd and on the wing!  It’s gonna be King Simba’s finest fling!”
“Oh I just can’t waaaaaaiiiit… to be kiiiiiiiing!” Gordon finished with a flourish.  In front of him, John shook his head and vanished, maybe to report to Virgil.  Or maybe to explain to Grandma what her grandsons were doing.
“Are you satisfied now?” Scott asked.  He sounded a little less stressed, which Gordon counted as a win, especially as the entire operation had taken less than five minutes, and Thunderbird Two was still nowhere near landing.
Fifty-five more minutes to fill before Virgil and his ion wrench came to the rescue.
“No way, Scotty,” he drawled, settling back against the wall again and ignoring the murderous silence. “What next?”
“No.”
So it was back to that was it?
“Hakuna Matata,” he drawled, and heard a sigh of resignation behind him.  “What a wonderful thing.”
By the time Virgil finally arrived an hour later, freshly showered and clearly in no hurry to rescue their brother, although he was dutifully carrying his toolbox, Gordon had dragged Scott through every movie duet he could think of and then some.
It was a dishevelled eldest brother desperately wanting a shower of his own that eventually found freedom, but a smiling one.

Daydreams, paper and plush?
Daydreams- if you cold be anything or anyone, what would you be?
Honestly? I would love to be a cat, a family pet- seeing the kids growing up and offer the family joy would be amazing.
Paper- What was your favourite children's book?
I don't know if I had a favourite children's book, but I definitely had a favourite story!
In Romania, we kind of have this collection of old fairytales, called Povesti Nemuritoare(Undying Stories), which are basically tales told through oral tradition, from generation to generation, that some authors decided to bind together and keep in books, so that kids could read them.
Other authors chose to follow the same structure of those old ones and write their own! One of our greatest sorytellers, Ion Creangă, wrote a story called Harap-Alb(you can find ot on Wikipedia). This is my favourite story!
Plush- do you still own stuffed animals?
I still have some plushies, but they sit in a box, on top of which is other stuff, but the fact that they are there is reassuring and comforting for me(even though I could never sleep with any of them, cause I'd kick them out of the bed involuntarily).

thank you to @brinnalaine for tagging me, you’re a babe x
are you named after someone?
yeah, I am actually. a little while before I was born, a Bollywood film called Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge came out, and I’m named after the main female character in that (foreshadowing how dramatic I am now,,,have y’all seen how dramatic Bollywood films are? one little slap across the face and girly’s spun across the room and tangled up in the curtain with it wrapped around her neck 💀)
last time you cried?
damn it was like a couple nights ago bc I was just in my mf feels like omg, I’m okay now though lol😭
any kids?
woah, um not yet lmao, I’m still a child myself, til I turn 18 in September (Virgo gang🤩). I’d like to have kids though - two boys, two girls - and my ass has already named them and everything💀
do you use sarcasm?
do I? I use sarcasm so much, it’s kinda inappropriate at times but oh well
first thing you notice about a person?
usually, their outfit. I don’t look for like designer clothes, but I like to think I have a bit of an eye for fashion and so I always look at someone’s outfit and decide if I like it or not, and I usually break the ice by complimenting their outfit or asking where they got something from (but sometimes I notice height or hair and face👀)
eye colour?
dark brown but they go light in the sun
scary movies or happy endings?
I am a hopeless romantic through and through (and I get scared at loud noises) so definitely happy endings, but I do love a good psychological thriller every now and then
special talents?
um, I don’t have any. kidding (not really) !! I’ve been dancing since I was like 3 so I’m quite a good dancer, and I’m very all rounded when it comes to school and my education and stuff like I’m great at maths and the sciences but also english and humanities and languages and the arts☺️
birthplace?
Birmingham, UK (so yes I have the shitty accent, don’t come for me bc Brum is elite😤👊🤧✊)
hobbies?
writing, dancing, reading (I love books omg pls recommend me some YA fiction)
do you play/have you played any sports?
um I’m not exactly physically inclined🤡 but I’m a dancer and dance is one of the hardest sports there is, don’t @ me, I said what I fucking said😤✊
pets?
no, but I got a little sister💀 but fr I really want a couple dogs in the future😭
height?
5’4.5’’ (the .5 is very important😤)
favourite subject in school?
I only do 4 subjects for my A-Levels (if y’all non-Brits don’t know what they are,,,,,ion know how to explain them lmao sorry) but my favourite two are English Lit and Performing Arts (bc Spanish is hard asf and business is boring asf)
dream job?
um, I’d love to dance professionally or maybe write, or even give it a go with singing, but for me it’s all or nothing like if my name ain’t on billboards and my back account ain’t fat, ion wanna know lmao. but yeah those choices are a lol unrealistic so I’m pursuing a teaching career instead🤡 but follow your dreams guys don’t do what I’m doing💀
I’m tagging @arvbellas @khaoticamour @booklover240 @darling-marvel @conslack @keylowmonie @pocketfullofsuga bc I wanna know more about y’all💕

Raya-san, do you have any OPM OCs?
Ohh!Hm, well, I don’t have any that I have like... fleshed out, regularly draw or RP with or anything like that... I have a few that I’ve made up for my fics where I needed a certain perspective or some such? These are the ones that spring to mind...
I will put this under a Read More, on account of the quotes making the post a bit long...
The oldest one I have, I guess, is from The unwilling patient (2016) where we study Genos’ body through the eyes of a young cyberneticist working for the HA, tasked to repair Genos after he’s injured:
By all accounts, he should have felt beyond excited. As far as he knew, no one had ever been given the same opportunity - the same honour. This would be a true testament to his skills. He'd be able to say, afterwards, that "ah, yes, that is the result of my work! Look at him go, how I fixed him!" Something to put in his resume, for sure. Something to brag about later. He should have been ecstatic.
The truth, however, was that he only felt very, very nervous. Primarily thanks to a pair of gold-on-black eyes that shone with an absolute fury. Directed straight at him.
A few months later I made a follow-up to that one, where the guy is fleshed out a little more and we learn that his name is Sato Ichigo (and that he has a girlfriend who tells him to tone down the fanboy:ing). That piece is titled Ten Visits and is about Genos visiting Ichigo for repairs that he doesn’t want to bother Kuseno with, gradually forming a sort of friendship (which was Kuseno’s plan all along, heh) as well as seeing Genos/Saitama’s relationship through an outsider’s view, which is one of my favourite things to write...
If Ichigo had been braver, he might have asked Doctor Kuseno if maybe he could come for a visit to see his lab and his work, one day. But that felt too large a request, especially knowing how the old man preferred to work in the shadows.
Instead, he diligently took to pestering Genos a while later, when he was still waking up and too out of it to put up much of a fight.
"Will you take me to see him?"
"Ngh."
"Come on!"
"Muh..."
"Pretty please?"
The cyborg was still on the table, blinking at the harsh lights above him and looking rather lost. Saitama hovered nearby, watching everything but not in the almost hostile way he had when they first came in. If anything, he looked intrigued by Genos' confusion.
"I'm not usually there when he wakes up from bigger repairs like this. I guess I get why now... he probably doesn't want me to see him in this state" he said in an amused tone, poking a soft cheek and chuckling as the other tried to swat his hand away, metal palm not quite hitting the mark as he waved it almost 20 cm too far to the side. "Is he even really awake?" "Yes. His brain is fully active. It's just his body that's rebooting and calibrating. It's taking longer than usual because I had to disable so many functions when I worked on it today." "'seno id-on" "What?" the other two said together as Genos attempted to speak. He took a moment to give them each a half-hearted glare before taking a deeper breath and trying again. "Kus...eno. De-ion." "Kuseno's decision?" Saitama offered, used to trying to make sense of his disciple in various states of disrepair... and abilities to speak coherently. "Yes." "If the kid can visit him?"
"Yes."
"But you will ask him for me, right?" Ichigo replied immediately. "Please? I mean... The more I learn about his work, the better I can help you, too? You'll at least ask, right?"
"Man, you really dig the old man, huh?" Saitama offered when Genos remained quiet.
"I, yes, I do! I mean, just look at Genos! He's amazing!"
"Sensei... amazing" Genos murmured, but said sensei just jabbed at his cheek again in response to that. This time the cyborg managed to grab the offending index finger, but instead of pushing it away, he continued to hold the hand close to his face. The show of affection was not lost on the cybernetician.
"Sap" he teased, smiling.
The next one after THAT was in a piece called Left in the past, where Saitama and Genos chance upon Genos’ cousin from his childhood. Saitama is surprised that Genos apparently cut all ties to him years ago despite losing the rest of his family, but eventually learns why.
"Man, those girls really love you huh" he asks ruefully after they barely escape another round of fans begging for his autograph. "They do!" Saitama answers for him, giving Genos a mild shove, Kaito laughing at his flustered expression. "Do they know it's a lost cause?" Kaito continues and Genos' somewhat pleased expression immediately turns sour. "Enough from you" he mutters darkly at the other who smirks back challengingly. "Well, he's right, isn't he?" Saitama chuckles. "Demon Cyborg is definitely married to his job!" Kaito laughs with him, but Genos is quiet for the rest of the walk home.
A honourable mention for the Crazy cat lady monster in Catnos, because I actually quite dig her (and I very lowkey want to make some sort of follow up where like, Saitama is like “ok but I wanna try being a kitty too” and they find her again, so I can write about Saitama’s turn to be a cat...)
”Life is simpler as a cat, is it not? Eat, sleep, play. Not so many responsibilities, not so many worries. Well, if you can forget them, at least. But you still remember, don’t you, little kitty?”
 ”Meow…”
”So do I, so do I. I remember them all. All the people who mistreated me, who were cruel to me. Cats are better than people. Cats are never intentionally cruel to anyone…”
Genos blinked up at the monster, but it paid him no mind as it continued.
”It was just me. Me and the cats against everyone. And I wished it was just me and the cats, and no one else at all. And then… it was. Such a thrill it was, to have that power…”
Like a striking snake the hand suddenly struck out and grabbed Genos by the scruff of the neck. He yowled loudly, twisting and struggling to get away, fighting for his life as he was lifted high into the air, but it seemed impossible to escape the monster’s grip on him.
”Easy, easy…” the monster murmured. It was looking straight at him now, pale eyes unreadable, illuminated by the moon and a flickering street light. ”Now you can’t hurt me either. All I wanted was to be alone, but you couldn’t even let me have that? So mean… you’re better off as a cat…”
Genos hissed as he dangled in the air, willing the monster to extend its other hand so that he could bite it, scratch it, anything.
”See? If you weren’t so mean, I wouldn’t have had to change you. If you’d just left me alone… But there’s no place for me in this world, is there? Not as a human, not like this…”
There’s the baby girl that I have actually drawn, here, although I don’t have a name for her or anything... but it’s probably her in the oneshot titled Pop where Genos has his torso filled with popcorn kernels while he sleeps, although she’d be a bit older there...
Genos awoke over an hour later, no thanks to himself - it was an alert that roused him, beeping and blinking at the edge of his vision.
 FOREIGN BODY DETECTED
”Whu-” he flailed an arm around, blinking the light from his eyes. He’d been attacked? Why hadn’t his proximity sensors awoken him, what could possibly-
A chubby face looked down at him from where he laid, breaking into a wide smile when she realized he was awake.
 ”Daddy!”
 ”H-honey? You’re up?”
”Yeah!” the little one proclaimed proudly, and reached her hand forward, towards his chest - why was his shirt pulled so high? He got his answer immediately as his daughter resolutely pushed something into his exposed vent, giggling in absolute glee as it disappeared into his body with a low rattle.
”What are you-...” carefully Genos pulled himself into a sitting position, pulling his shirt down as he did so - only to hear a strange, clinking noise, like pebbles in a can. A lot of pebbles. From inside his torso.
AND the very last one is... well, for ages I’ve had this idea of a group of little old ladies that live in City Z, not the abandoned parts like Sai but not too far from him, probably? They’ve lived there their whole lives and they’re not going to move now just because weird critters have started showing up more often. Fierce little ladies that spend a good portion of their day fighting with that bald man over the sales and scaring wolf level threats away with their purses and canes. I lowkey want to write about Genos and Saitama’s struggles with them, haha.
Bonus: One day Kuseno visits and the ladies see him and they are blown away and demand Genos introduce them to him and Genos is just suffering (and like Saitama, he’s used to just... fighting and arguing with them, normally, so it’s all very weird to him!)
Me, before answering this: alas I don’t really have any OCs, do I?
Me, after answering this: oh

First things first: What is a hoverboard?
These types of hoverboards can't actually levitate, a la " Returning to the near future Part II. " Instead, they use tires to spin throughout the surface. It noises lame, but really, they're much more fun to drive when compared to a skateboard.
Officially, they're called "self-balancing scooters. inches These scooters look and work like small Segways ( without the handlebars) continuing to move forward when you slim forward and braking and reversing when you thin back. You face transfer while using and use delicate actions of your foot, hip and legs and torso to maneuver in a path.
To get going, whatever you carry out is step on. Both pressure-sensitive footpads enable you to control the velocity and steer along with your foot. Because the hoverboard begins going as soon as you step on, installing and dismounting can be hard in the beginning. And since there is deal with to stable yourself, controlling can be hard -- it's simple to fall off as you get accustomed to the board.
Tumblr media
Truly, it's kind of a good work out. You utilize your primary to stay well balanced and also feel the burn off in your calves and ft . considering that the muscles individuals areas help you steer.
Whether you call them hoverboards, self-balancing panels or perhaps explosions waiting around to occur, these two-wheeled scooters aren't heading anywhere on http://get10best.com/best-hoverboard-for-kids/.
This tech fad might have been awesome, but it had a dangerous side. This past year this news was peppered with reviews of hoverboards exploding and getting open up fire. Metropolitan areas prohibited all of them from streets and sidewalks. Airlines would not let you bring them onto airplanes. Suppliers such as Amazon and Overstock ceased offering specific models and even informed buyers to garbage ones they are yet to already received.
Be enough this to express that a lot is promoting in the last yr. For anybody who is searching for a table this christmas and beyond, in this article would be the items you should know just before you purchase.
Carry out hoverboards still capture fire place?
Tumblr media
2015 found various reports of hoverboards combusting or overflowing. To blame was obviously a mixture of faulty battery packs and bad consumer electronics. Hoverboards are run by significant lithium ion electric batteries that can heat up and explode under unusual circumstances -- something similar is definitely considered to have occurred with Samsung Galaxy Take note 7 earlier this fall.
In early 2016, the customer Product Safety Percentage investigated the safety of most hoverboards across all brands, promoting that any new hoverboards produced be " accredited UL 2272 compliant" to considered to be brought in to the US (more about this later). Compliant hoverboards are more unlikely to end in flames.
After that there were counterfeits. CNET video manufacturer Mariel Myers came across this when the lady purchased a desk by a third-party vendor about Amazon . com. com and wound up with a cheaply made artificial. During the time, these knockoff planks appeared to be considerably more vulnerable to fire and explosions, but we how to start for certain. To get the actual board, she wound up going straight to the Canadian manufacturer's website.
Exactly what are other security concerns?
Even though you don't have to stress about explosions, you may still find risks to bear in mind.
Falling off and harming yourself. Much like any fast-moving vehicle, generating a hoverboard can bring about personal injury. Hoverboards can reach a maximum speed of around 10 mph, so that you could support a far more significant destruction than you will falling off a slower-moving skateboard.
Though most bikers (at least in Bay area ), do without it again, proper safety gear is essential. You may need a helmet, leg parts, elbow pads and arm guards. This will reduce your likelihood of fractures, sprains and other mishaps if you fall.
Tumblr media
Traffic injuries.  Substantially like  bicycles and skateboards, gleam risk of stepping into a traffic incident, particularly if you're in or near to the street. A teenager was struck and wiped out with a tour bus in London while applying a hoverboard. Please don't trip a hoverboard on the street or near traffic -- except if you're in California wherever hoverboards are categorized like a bike under legislation.
Fat limitations. Hoverboards have at least (usually around 45 pounds) and maximum weight limit (some boards can support about 300 pounds). These kinds of restrictions happen to be designed to guard the rider and flexibility scooter, and that means you should look at manufacturer's internet site to find out more.
Children under the weight limit may have trouble employing, as the scooters won't identify their pounds and won't balance appropriately. When your child ride a hoverboard? You will need to use your very best judgment.
Steep hills. Many cedar planks also won't function increasing or down large hillsides, generally over 30 degrees. You can find little height boundaries linked to the planks, though retain mind that many lift you about several in. above the floor. When you're especially high, you'll work a larger risk of striking the head while riding.
Why are they a favourite?
Hoverboards can be hard to find the suspend of. But once you expert riding a person, that motions effortlessly with you, halting on the cent and turning easily. Using an individual almost seems like an expansion of yourself, and keep in mind that require any manual movement, such as an enjoyment or kick kid scooter. You can get a whole lot of price (most top out at about twelve mls each hour ), thus, making them faster than walking.
Even though they could be expensive, they're more compact and cheaper in comparison to a Segway (which costs upward of $5, 000), so they're a lot more accessible to buy, shop and use.
Thus which hoverboards must i acquire?
There are various companies selling hoverboards, starting around $220 and reaching up to $800. Most of them job likewise, with minor distinctions in specs and style. I've ridden many models. While there are sensitive variations in the way they trip, it can not easy to differentiate the high-end and cheaper types.
The largest factor to consider when shopping is make sure that is UL 2272 accredited. In case you are unfamiliar with UL, it is usually an corporation that certifies, validates, checks, verifies, inspects and audits electric gadgets. UL seeks to "facilitate global trade and deliver satisfaction. "
That said, remember that CNET have not thouroughly tested some of these brands, or can we specifically attest to their very own comparative  protection or absence thereof.

I’m actually replaying Tales of the Abyss now instead of just thinking about replaying it as I become randomly taken over by Dist-related feelings. So under the cut is my experience with the first third of the game (everything up to the haircut).
- Imma just start with the character stuff and then move onto the gameplay stuff bc nobody cares about gameplay.
- Yeah, I started playing this like - “I wonder if I’ll still like the same shitty ships I liked when I was playing this ten years ago.” And the answer is FUCKING YES - they are apparently permanently ingrained in my psyche.
- On the subject of Luke... I didn’t actually remember how much of a douche he is for the first third of the game, since it’s been a while and I’m more accustomed to seeing portrayals of the better rounded and kinder character he eventually became. I’m going to say, I’m really glad he grew out of it on both a narrative and personal level, but I also really did enjoy and love long-hair douchey Luke. He’s insufferable and I adore him.
- That being said, I think this kind of puts an interesting spin on Luke/Tear. I do genuinely like this ship and am happy with where it ended up, but a lot of what seems to keep their early interactions from going even more poorly than they do is that Luke is... very used to bossing people around. And Tear is very used to being bossed around. Like, she’ll obviously talk back to him, but even so- Tear kind of falling into this servile protective bodyguard role is kind of what ends up endearing her to Luke and it’s kind of bad and good at the same time. Especially combined with things like her thinking the Baticul maid outfit his servants wear is cute... This idea could be taken places... I’m glad the relationship didn’t stay like this in the larger context of things, but I’m also kind of enjoying where it’s at so~
- That being said I feel like the party starts making lovebird jokes way too early. Like, I like this ship a lot, but I also have bad taste, and this isn’t the kind of thing I feel should be encouraged irl/in-universe. Not as their relationship exists during this part of the game, at least. ubb.
- More generally I do like Tear a lot tho. I think having her be a bit more serious and stoic and emotionally withdrawn are things that speak a lot to me, with regards to female characters and heroines especially. I also like that she is genuinely competent as a fighter and protector. And that the more traditional damsel role is occupied by a man, Ion.
- I’m also surprised that Tear’s boobs are as modestly proportioned as they are. Maybe it’s because of doujin content, or a couple of tactless jokes later on in the game(?) but I always thought they were HUGE instead of, well, buxom and hourglassy in the vein that you might find on a real woman. This game in general isn’t super fanservice-y in its character designs (although there’s something to be said about a few of the scenarios). There’s some Zettai Ryouki on the girls, but that’s about it. I guess the fact that this game's age is showing.
- The different iterations of ships involving Anise, Arietta, and the Ions are also something that are still appealing to me a lot. Part of me feels bad for being okay with Anise/Florian, since Florian’s a kind of an obvious replacement character. But then I start thinking about how conflicting and upsetting it would be for Anise and then - whoops - I’m interested again.
- Luke and Ion crush on each other so hard though. This was not a ship from when I first played but, god, it’s so cute how much Ion seems to genuinely like Luke, and how Luke gets so tsun and blushy about protecting him. Excuse me while I try and figure out a way to write this that isn’t heartbreaking, and fail.
- me: I wonder if I’ll like Jade as much as I did the first time. Since I seem to have come to a realisation that he’s an emotionally manipulative asshole with a very limited capacity for empathy on any non-abstract level. Jade’s disembodied voice *hasn’t even shown up on screen yet* : Move out of the way or it’s not my problem if you get run over by this tank I’m driving. me: I was a complete fool. He’s a total asshole and I love him so much.
- Naw, yeah, for real tho: one of the first things Jade does upon meeting Natalia is try and establish that she’ll be easy to emotionally manipulate and control. He rather easily brushes over watching the suffering of others in favour of more goal oriented behavior. That, in addition to what happens when he extracts information from Dist at the Keterburg Hotel... I don’t really think I was off the mark about Jade potentially negging his boyfriend or exacting physical torture on his ex, especially insofar as his ex is a criminal anyhow. Like, obviously Jade has some kind of moral code by the time the game begins. And overall I think it’s admirable that he’s concerned about things like minimising the world’s death toll and human suffering. But he’s certainly not above breaking a few eggs to make and omelette, even if those eggs include visiting long-term physical and psychological damage on others. I would... hope that he could restrain himself from taking that kind of route with things. But I don’t think I’m exactly wrong in thinking he’s not a person I would trust not to, and thus not someone I’d want to invite within a mile of my personal life. Although he’s probably going to continue being a character I really cherish. He might still be my favourite playable character in the game - although Tear and Anise come close.
- Actual favourite character is Dist, of course. I mean, he’s hammy and awful and terribly written, but I love him so much. ‘Everyone is jealous of my intelligence and beauty.’ (Which is even funnier considering the post-battle dialogue where Anise and Jade tell Luke to write about their beauty and intelligence respectively in his diary. Birds of a feather.) idk, it’s just really strange, because I don’t really like when fanon iterations of characters are made more femme and flamboyant than they are in canon. But you have actual femme and flamboyant men in canon (Dist, Wallace from pkmn, etc) and somehow I love them so much, omg. (Dist also has a lot of grief stuff I like tho - v relatable with regards to Nebilim.) idk, I just count my lucky stars every day. Because five of the six God Generals die in this game, so the odds were definitely not in my favour, but somehow my favourite is the one that makes it out alive?! I’m dying at how blessed I am. Dist is basically the opposite of the Bury Your Gays trope, and I love it.
- On that note, when Jade and Dist are snarking and Luke and Guy share the look(tm) and are like ‘they’re off in their own little world’ asdfghjkl;
- me: I wonder if I’ll like Natalia more this time. Since I’m more aware now of the baggage and misogyny that goes into female character creation, and am more likely to blame authors than the characters themselves. Natalia: *to Luke, after taking one look at Tear* Are you fucking the servant girl? me: YIKES(tm)
- Naw, she’s okay. I mean... she’s not less okay than Anise or Tear, really, in terms of poor (stereotypical) writing and poor (catty) behaviour. I certainly think her commitment to being a kind ruler and acting towards the public good with her own hands and own feet is quite touching. But she appeals to me the least out of the three girls on a personal level. And, also, I think there are several issues with her introduction-
- Well... first off, that we hear about Natalia from Luke and Guy earlier in the game - and we’re told she’s high maintenance and clingy before we’ve even met her. And then we meet her and her introduction ends up immediately corroborating what Luke says about her. So... it’s a very bad first impression in a way. In general it’s kind of interesting seeing how the narrative feeds out information, now that I know all the characters and all the twists. Some of it is info-dumpy, and some of it is unintuitive, but it’s interesting to watch how it drops out hints and evidence for you to try and piece together before the reveals come.
- But I digress, the other thing is Natalia is, after her disastrous first impression, set up as a foil for Luke. Her kindness and selfless concern for others, and how seriously she takes her responsibility as a state leader, are both immediately cast against Luke’s self-absorption. Which... is in some ways ineffective for me tbh.
- Idk, just, like- An adult man spends seven years building up trust with a child that’s been isolated and emotionally neglected by design, and then manipulates and uses him as part of a murderous rampage. (two children, if we’re including Ion) And somehow this is Luke’s fault? Yeah, I don’t... buy that.
- I mean, Luke is obviously rude, callous, selfish, and arrogant. And I think all of those things are problems. All of those things are Luke’s fault and responsibility. I do think it’s upsetting that Luke is more concerned with dodging blame regarding Akzeriuth than he is concerned about... everyone who just died. And I’m certainly glad that Luke makes a decision to change. But... none of those things are really related to him feeling he can trust Van, and it’s pretty monstrously unfair to blame him for being manipulated by the only adult he really felt took his interests and concerns seriously as a kid. (I mean, obviously his parents love him, and he them. But there’s also a definite feeling that his concerns are not being prioritised by them. And that he can’t even advocate his concerns with regards to his mother, whose emotional and physical health could be endanger if Luke burdened her with his upsets.) As the player, we don’t really have a reason to trust Luke, and Luke’s loyalty to Van, more than Tear’s (and the rest of the party’s) distrust of her brother. We’ve known Luke and Tear approximately the same amount of time. But... Luke has known Van for seven years. And Luke has known Tear and Jade and Anise for a couple of weeks and has little reason to trust them. Tear spirited him away from the safety of his manor and into a dangerous world. Jade and Anise had him restrained and arrested and made no secret they were using his status for their political goals (good goals, but still...) They’re all openly disparaging of Luke. It seems pretty natural that Luke would trust Van over them, and the fact that Van was counting on that when he betrayed Luke and everyone... I mean... I also don’t blame the rest of the party for blaming Luke in the heat of the moment, but I think the game and narrative itself takes the ‘it’s your fault’ stuff a bit too seriously and uncritically. It’s also super obvious that they ramped up Luke’s unlikable qualities in preparation for what happens at Akzeriuth - pride cometh before the fall. And, even if it’s emotionally effective, it still don’t really go from point A to point B that being selfish and rude and arrogant makes you at fault for being susceptible to emotional manipulation. Which is kind of frustrating.
- Also, yeah, zol was right. You could’ve saved that kid with stalagmite or smthn, Jade.
- There’s a lot of weird bullshit along the lines of gameplay vs plot dissonance. Like trying to light barrels of oil on fire in the Abandoned Factory. I’m surprised none of them blew up in Luke’s face. Did nobody think to bring a candle? Or just have Mieu light up the dark with fire near the switch? That would have been a lot more expedient and a lot less dangerous.
- Ion: The seventh fonon was recently discovered. Jade: And thirty years ago, when I was a young lad, I was upset I couldn’t use the seventh fonon and blew up my teacher by mistake (whoopsie). me: what the flippity fuck, Ion? that’s not recent. I thought you were supposed to be better than Luke about this shit. What could possibly be responsible for this mistake - OH!
- In general, since Ion’s four years old and somehow knows a shitton about the world, it kind of takes some of the wind out of Luke’s sails when he’s had a three year lead on Ion ‘but i had more important stuff to learn, like my parent’s faces’. Luke’s amnesia and subsequent isolation are pretty well integrated into the story for the most part, but parts of it are obviously exaggerated for the sake of having a character that needs the relevant info about the game world infodumped on them.
- Mieu... is a thing. I don’t really like mascot characters as a concept in general. But I think some authors, like CLAMP, have done a good job integrating them into their stories. I can’t really say the same for Mieu though. That he kind of is Luke’s chew toy for the beginning part of the story is interesting. And that he fucked things over for his people and the Ligers due to this random accident (much like Luke) is kind of interesting. But... overall he’s just a very annoying cute thing that’s following you around for no reason. I wonder if his voice is less grating in Japanese, but the PS2 version of this game at least didn’t come with JP audio, which was kind of a bummer. I like the dub for the most part (Anise especially is really good) but I would have liked to hear the JP version this time.
- I think I still prefer platonic Guy/Luke to romantic Guy/Luke. (Although I don’t dislike it, the way I dislike Asch/Luke) but I am super charmed by the drama with Guy having all this resentment towards Asch that then becomes easier to move past once Asch gets switched out for Luke. Like, I think in some ways it’s more about Guy being in a different place looking after this helpless newly replicated Luke at age 14 compared to looking after the better-realised Asch when he was younger, rather than because of a stark difference between Luke and Asch themselves. But I can’t help but love Guy a little for seeing them so differently and feeling certain that Luke is the one that’s his friend. It’s really sweet and cute x’)
- And last thing - the hyperresonance stuff was super poorly explained. Particularly the first one between Luke and Tear. We’re told that this is something that can randomly happen when two seventh fonists interact, and Tear’s like ‘i should have been more careful’ like this is something that happens periodically that you can predict and avoid. but... how? What are the conditions that lead to this? Is this scientifically replicatable at all? Or is it something that can happen completely at random whenever Luke and Tear touch each other? Whenever Natalia and Asch touch each other? they’re just going to be having sex one day and randomly teleport out into an open field or smthn. This is so dumb. Except I know that the teleportation thing was actually 100% convenient plot bullshit, so I shouldn’t even pretend it can be made sense of in any real way, smh.
- New Game Plus! I debated quite a bit, but in the end EXP x10 was the only thing I purchased from the grade shop. I wanted to have the experience of gathering all the items and bonuses myself, since I forgot what happened the first playthrough. But I’m regretting the decision a bit now since I did all the sidequests and ultimate weapons and stuff the first time around and had a very full inventory, and I’ve already missed at least one thing on my current playthrough when a combination of not saving and forgetting how to walk lost me Barrelow X’s Capacity Core. (Not saving also made me not have a save to go back to to win against Asch at Yulia City- boo) But, regardless, even without all the other perks, I figured EXP x10 would basically mean breezing through the story, which was what in theory I wanted. But then I decided to combine this with the Unknown Difficulty Mode (enemy stats x3.5) which effectively made the game even more slow than the first runthrough, EXP x10 be damned. I spent a lot of the first part of the game crowding around Engeve, frantically trying not to die before I gathered 100 gald to stay at the Inn. I was completely outmatched on the Tartarus when it gets overrun with Griffins and Ligers. And I made about a dozen trips between the Fubras River and Engeve before I finally made it to Arietta without my characters dying. After getting my party to level 40, spamming Mystic Cage, and still getting absolutely crushed by Arietta at Coral Castle, I finally gave up. I lowered it down to Very Hard mode instead and defeated her in two minutes. After a quick search, I learned that this is considered one of the hardest battles with the hard mode stat multipliers, and it gets easier from there. So I technically could have kept going to level 50 or smthn but... it also seemed like a lot of these people were doing this challenge with the capacity cores and equipment rollover, and without them I’d most certainly have to grind more (and grind without good capacity core stat bonuses). And the simple truth of the matter is I wasn’t having fun anymore. So... if I do a third playthrough in another ten years, I’ll rollover everything properly to do Unknown properly, but in the meantime I’ll stick to whatever mode lets me farm grade the most easily.
- On that note, it became very clear that the defense stat in this game is very broken. All the characters (including your own characters, pretty much regardless of level) have /lots of HP/ and are meant to take /a lot/ of small hits - this is just the play style. So, as long as you have full TP and a way to heal, taking on characters with multiple times their usual attack and HP stats is doable. On the other hand, characters with high defense, like Arietta, Golems, etc... Even small differences between your attack stats and the opponent’s defense stats can result in your own attacks doing half/quarter/tenth of their usual damage, which means a battle taking two/four/ten times longer than usual (and you’re way more likely to run out of TP and healing items this way). I think this essentially means that high fonic/phys attack (respective of whether the character has a mage vs melee move set) are the most important stats for the player character. It would be cool if you could replicate Arietta’s defense effect with your own characters but... the truth is the bosses in these types of games are built very differently than the player characters (unlike something like pkmn)... so I’m not sure you can(?)
- Pet peeves currently include the Tales Of series’s multi-part cutscenes. It’s started already and I know it will get worse (i distinctly recall latter parts of this game where I had to fly between characters in different cities collecting cutscenes before I could move onto the next dungeon) But, yeah- I’m at a bit of a loss here because, while I like open exploration game worlds where you walk between different locations and vastly prefer this to games that teleport you between battle stages (ie Sonic Adventure 2, Disgaea) there is a lot of retreading old pathways in Abyss (as there was in Legendia) trying to negotiate between different talking heads. Like... I saved my game going up the tower at Coral Castle, intending to walk into a boss fight. And then a cutscene happened, during which I was teleported three loadscreens back in the direction I came from for another cutscene. And then I had to manually walk back the same exact route and save again, before another cutscene and finally the battle. What’s the rationale behind not just making that one big pre-battle cutscene with the travel included/implied? Maybe the fact that they DON’T HAVE A CUTSCENE/SKIT SKIP BUTTON which is another pet peeve, mind you. Another example is when you get to Luke’s home in Baticul and have to run back down to the port to retrieve the scrolls that the maids threw out, and then climb back up to his house again. It’s not like anything exciting happened on the three different elevators I took between those two points. It’s not like I don’t know what the trip between those points looked like - I just came from the port. There’s no reason not to just have it be automatic. Even attempts to reduce this - the wing bottle - are frustrating in their setup. By requiring me to spend money and keep inventory in order to use the teleport function, they are incentivising me to /not/ use the teleport function. They’re requiring me to spend money to /avoid/ doing something boring. And that’s, idk, kind of unnecessary and shitty? Like, usually in a game I want to be spending money in order to unlock new features and content and have more fun. Not to, like, avoid playing parts that I’ve played already. idk, because i do realise that streamlining some of these moments would require alterations to cut down some of the movement in the plot - and ultimately I think flying between cities to talk with different people before acting isn’t bad or unrealistic plot wise. buuuut, even if some of the multi-part cutscenes need to stay for this effect, even if not all of them could have been streamlined into a more direct line of action and travel, even if not any specific moment of this travel is unbearably awful, it still frustrates me that this clearly wasn’t even a priority for the devs.

Note
I feel attacked now bc I definitely would get my kid a coach to not lose their accent...? But only bc I grew up in a different country than mine that has a different accent to the same language and now I do need speech therapy bc that messed up with the way I pronounce certain things and made me develop a lisp and slurred speech sometimes. That added to my ADD and GAD makes a fine recipe for people needing to ask me a hundred times to repeat myself or be asked a hundred times where exactly am I from (or ppl spending hours trying to guess sometimes) OR MY ABSOLUTE PERSONAL FAVOURITE: Me going to a shop in my hometown that I actually have been to a hundred times and even know the owners, but when tried to ask info to a new clerk he looking at me and saying "I can speak spanish" and me reolying "good for you bc I cant" kabajshakja and then realising he was thinking I was a tourist. So, yeah idk but I would try to keep my kids accent clean but thats me 🤷‍♀️
i mean, i think it depends on how old ur child is when u move, but i also know loads of kids that grow up bilingual at home and therefore can have an accent when they speak german and i think that’s cute and unique! idk about “keeping it clean” when it comes to accents, like i totally get it if u develop a speech impediment and have actual difficulties, but to bring ur child to a dialect coach simply bc u don’t want them to lose their accent....ion know bout all dat! let kids be kids

A Hat In Time REVIEW - "Unbelievably charming"
Tumblr media
PLEASE NOTE: This game has very little story to spoil but I will be talking about the entire adventure, so consider yourself warned
RELEASED: 2017
FORMATS: PC, Mac, PS4, Xbone, Switch (review based on PC and Switch)
I debated long and hard how best to open this review, and in the end I decided that nothing introduces A Hat In Time better than its astonishing soundtrack. Though I’d been aware of the game since before it released, I never actively sought it out until I happened to watch the launch trailer. Not only is the kaleidoscope of levels and characters eye-catching, what stood out as truly special was Pascal Michael Stiefel’s music. The trailer features the game’s main theme, which is striking, energetic and playful, easily one of my favourite videogame themes of this generation, and a perfect encapsulation of everything A Hat In Time is about.
At the risk of spoiling the end of this review, I usually find that the hardest games to critique are the ones I love most. A review of a bad game almost writes itself, because all I have to do is point out the wonky mechanics, or boring story, or the fact that one or more of the developers are bigoted pieces of shit (ION FURY), or whatever. But when I try to sum up my opinion on an excellent game, it’s hard for me to maintain some level of objectivity. So I guess we should all go into this on the understanding that I freaking adore A Hat In Time.
Tumblr media
As mentioned, what strikes you first is the sheer, weaponised cuteness that A Hat In Time wields like a sharpened umbrella. I think Nitro Rad put it best when he said the game was just unbelievably charming. How many soundtracks outside of Star Trek prominently feature theremins? Other than a tiny smidgen of slowdown in the larger areas (even on my reasonably beastly PC), ON SCREEN NOTE: THE SWITCH VERSION IS LOCKED TO 30FPS BUT I LOVE THE PORTABILITY it’s an explosion of visual and audio polish that would be impressive from a bigger studio, let alone a developer which originally relied on volunteers. From the moment Hat Kid wakes up in her time-travelling spaceship only to soon find herself stranded on a weird planet populated by surreal characters, the expectations have been set sky-high.
But this tiny quibble didn’t distract me for long, because the opening Mafia Town chapter gives you a bright and colourful seaside town to get lost in, with highlights including a sequence where you pretend to be a ghost and chase a terrified henchman, and an operatic 2D showdown against the mafia boss. I actually think Mafia Town might be the game’s weakest chapter overall, but that’s like being the worst port of Metal Gear Solid 3: still pretty fucking good. Afterwards comes Dead Bird Studio, where you have to help two rival directors film stunts to earn a prestigious award, with particular praise going to the hilarious murder mystery on a train. It’s very neat that the winning director is decided by how many collectables you gather in their respective levels. Then comes the game’s darkest sequence in Subcon Forest, which starts with Hat Kid literally selling her soul to a melodramatic demon who’s probably the standout performance in an entertaining voice cast. One of his levels is a startlingly spooky manor which honestly might be too scary for younger players. Although no game will ever be as scary as that one bit in Banjo-Kazooie (shark clip). Next, however, you get a relaxing change of pace with Alpine Skyline, which subverts the established level structure with a more open-ended village hub which made me think of the original Jak and Daxter. At this point you’ll have most of the hats, which makes it easier to scoop up enough time pieces to unlock the final chapter, which is a single level consisting of some fiendish platforming and a suitably spectacular boss. While the narrative’s sudden attempt to tie unrelated characters together during this last sequence feels a bit forced, I eventually warmed to it as a "look at all the friends we've made along the way" affair. Plus the chapter itself is undeniably climactic, and I couldn’t help get a little emotional when that phenomenal trailer music which I refuse to shut up about kicked in during the credits.
The Gears For Breakfast team have cited 6th-generation 3D platformers like Mario Sunshine and Psychonauts as their main inspiration, which is when 3D games arguably hit their stride, and their game flaunts those influences with pride without being afraid to forge its own identity. Hat Kid is not only adorably cheeky, with an expressive face that reminds me of Wind Waker, she can also jump, dive and walk on tightropes so that the platforming feels precise and forgiving, and she quickly picks up an arsenal of hats which grant various powers. This is one of those collectathons where I suggest speeding through most levels before coming back later with all the abilities unlocked, because some macguffins can seem tantalisingly just out of reach, but won’t actually be accessible without certain hats. All the powers are great, though, and see frequent use, from straightforward ones like the hat that makes you run faster to the one that lets you jump on ghost-blocks. They complement Hat Kid’s default moveset really well and getting a new hat always feels like a big moment. There are also badges, which grant similarly useful upgrades, but you can only equip a few at a time. This is one minor gripe I have: swapping between hats makes sense, because using them all at once would break the game, but some of the badges (such as one that lets you climb walls after a dive) just feel like basic features which make the game worse if you don’t equip them. Limiting how many badges I can use at once just adds a bit of unnecessary faffing about in the pause screen. Pro tip: buy the “no bonk” badge from the creepy merchant straight away and never look back.
Tumblr media
From start to finish, I genuinely struggled to find meaningful problems with A Hat In Time. I could have forgiven a lot of problems for the fun and inventive situations the game threw at me, but I never had to. Instead I have to say I found myself wondering when a game had last struck me as being filled with so many little surprises and unnecessary extra touches, including an entire co-op mode that’s apparently a bit buggy but awesome nonetheless. Hat Kid mainly communicates through one-word sentences but stands out in a sea of platformer protagonists because of the obvious love that went into her animation and soundwork, and the game as a whole has an amazingly strong aesthetic. I was genuinely upset to find that the Hat Kid plush toys are currently out of stock. There’s not much of an overarching plot but each chapter tells its own story and feels distinct, and there isn’t any filler content even though you only need 25 out of 40 time pieces to reach the ending. This is definitely more forgiving than Yooka-Laylee, which has yet to let me fight the final boss. A Hat In Time has at least a few challenging sequences for completionists to endure, including a badge that makes you die in one hit if you hate yourself that much, but crucially that stuff is optional if you just want to have an adorable adventure without too much swearing.
I’ve tried very hard in this review not to come across as overly gushing, because no game is perfect and I definitely have a soft spot for ambitious indie projects. As someone who only really heard about the game once it was out, though, A Hat In Time snuck up on me with how impressive it is as a crowdfunded game. Despite the many obstacles described in interviews, Gears For Breakfast delivered a platformer which I honestly hope Nintendo takes a few notes from, given that Mario has had a bit of a monopoly on 3D platformers ever since the genre went out of vogue. Super Mario Odyssey represents the peak of what a big-budget 3D platformer can do, but A Hat In Time is undeniably impressive as a smaller project and I honestly prefer it in a lot of ways, not least of all because it packs so much charm into a small package and introduces the world to an lovable new platformer mascot. Even if Yooka-Laylee disappointed a lot of people, it’s still really cool to see games like A Hat In Time and Snake Pass giving Nintendo some competition again. After years of 8 and 16-bit indie games, there now seems to be a growing nostalgia for games from the early days of 3D, and as someone who grew up around that time, the prospect of new games that revive and improve ideas from that era is obviously thrilling.
Hyperbole aside, probably the greatest compliment I can give A Hat In Time is that it lives up to the standard of quality set by that theme music: beautiful, original and unrelentingly exciting.

How to start your own zine - Ione Gamble
What I do and why I do it "I create and edit a self-published zine called Polyester. I created Polyester during my second year of university, frustrated by the media industry's representation of fourth wave feminism and favouritism towards minimalism, and obsessed with the group of young women and queer people I knew online who were creating progressive, beautiful work but weren't being provided with a proper platform to showcase it. From early teenhood I always knew the area in which I wanted to work, but not the specific job. I was obsessed with collecting whichever magazines I could get my hands on, watching VHS tapes bought from charity shops and constantly scrolling through Tumblr seeking things out - and after a short stint studying photography during my A levels decided journalism was the path I wanted to pursue.
I'm not sure there was one specific person or thing that made me want to decide to do what I now do - the generation of women I grew up with were always creating things on their own terms. Watching my peers produce imagery, writing and zines, at a much younger age than I felt confident doing, eventually gave me no reason not to give it a go myself. Seeing people actually buy and enjoy the first issue of Polyester was a nice moment as before then I'd sort of created this thing without really knowing if anyone would like it, if it would resonate with anyone else or how it would be received more generally."
A day in my life... "Consists of a lot of emails, mainly. Juggling my freelance assignments whilst working towards the next Polyester print issue and administrative tasks such as packaging up the zines sold that week. I look forward to the point in production of an issue in which most of the planning is out of the way and we begin shooting or I start interviewing people who we're featuring. A task I hide from is definitely tackling my mammoth pile of unread emails. The most rewarding aspect of my job is seeing people come to the launch parties, zine fairs, or even just posting a picture of the zine on Instagram and seeing that other people actually engage with the project. The biggest misconception about my job is that you'll be making lots of money. Polyester by no means pays for me to live and being advertising/sponsorship free all of the money we make goes towards producing the next issue and paying our contributors expenses."
The moment that made me...
"This is a difficult one to answer as I tend to separate what I think of as 'my career' to what I do with Polyester as a publication - even though obviously certain aspects of the two are linked and intertwined. In terms of my own career as a freelance journalist: Ashleigh Kane was the first person that approached me about writing for her and has always been so supportive of what I do. In terms of Polyester I think the defining moments so far in terms of advancing the zine have been our Meadham Kirchhoff feature in issue two and securing Tavi Gevinson as our cover girl for issue four. Both of those features were incredibly important to establishing the zine's tone of voice and gave me the opportunity to work with figures I hugely admired personally. The first birthday party we threw for Polyester was really cool - seeing hundreds of people come together to have important discussions on feminism, gender and social politics whilst also doing completely fun and ridiculous workshops like creating crowns out of pipecleaners and partaking in a live photoshoot with Maisie Cousins. It really cemented the community around Polyester that I've always strived to create."
To degree or not to degree, that is the question.... "I went to university, and did a degree in Fashion Journalism and although don't think it's entirely necessary in order to have a successful career in journalism the grants and loans that were available to working class kids (before the Tories scrapped them) - who couldn't afford to intern for free off the back of their parents' paycheck -- did mean it was a more viable route for many (including me) than going out into the industry alone. I think work experience is completely necessary and more important than studying in some cases. But traditional placements aren't the only way of securing job offers - during university I wrote for smaller publications, and other zines before I established my own, which provided me with the invaluable experience of working with editors and pitching ideas - it also meant I wasn't hugely reliant on working for other people for free full time and already had contacts in place when looking for freelance work once I'd graduated. Be enthusiastic and don't be afraid to chase things up - people are busy and forgetful, but that's not to say you should hound them with five emails a day until they reply. Apply for places you genuinely care about and give reasons as to why you want to work for them and why you feel like you'd fit in well there. Most of all don't feel disheartened by rejection as something will always work out! The biggest lesson I've learnt is to persevere against all odds, stand up for yourself when you know you should be getting paid, and don't let anyone or thing get in the way of what you want."
What I wish I knew then that I know now...
"Maybe that harding work does actually pay off and as much as people say that the fashion/media industries are super difficult to break into, if you're motivated enough then anything is possible. Make sure you really know what you're getting yourself in for - starting and maintaining a zine is a lot a lot of work but really, really worth it when it all pays off. Find a strong community of friends and creative peers to surround yourself with and work with each other on projects both just for fun and in a professional context. Write for other people before you try and go it alone."
I'm excited by tomorrow because… "I'm currently in the early stages of planning Polyester issue six, and we're also looking to make some changes to Polyester online and organising more events in between now and the next issue. At the beginning of each issue the thing that excites me the most about making Polyesteris the opportunity to work with a load of new inspiring people, or the opportunity to interview someone who's work I have loved for a really long time. I think that's the best thing about working in a creative field - making things collaboratively, watching the images and words other people have produced for the issue who live in other parts of the world be submitted, and eventually seeing it all come together in the form of a printed publication. I'm inspired by my peers and creative women. In general the community around me of visual artists and activists who continue to fight for the causes they believe in and create inspiring work inspire me to continue doing what I'm doing. Spoken word artist Liv Wynter completely made me reconsider my own writing style after reading the brilliant profile she wrote on fellow performance artist Liv Fontaine for our current issue. My friend Maria Cabrera who helps run Reel Good Film Club, and Art Baby Gallery's Grace Miceli both work so hard and both of their individual hustles inspire me daily."

H A I R | T I M E L I N E
So I change my hair colour fairly often; not Ramona Flowers often, but frequent enough to be noticeable. I only bleach my hair every 3 months in an attempt not to kill my already dry and damaged ends. Naturally, I’m a brunette and a dark one at that so getting my hair light enough to colour is always fun and a little bit itchy. I have never been to a salon in my life and all colouring is done in my bathroom.

The top photo isn’t my natural colour but a result of box bleach over dying your hair black for years. Hell, I can’t even remember what my natural colour really looks like, but that's what being an emo kid wanting black hair does to you. By the end of my school career, I was a gingery, brown, blonde mess and I kind of loved it. My hair was this colour for a few months before I took the plunge and went fully blonde.
At the end of August 2016 with the help of my hairdresser mother and Jerome Russel box bleach, I went blonde. (as a side note do not use Jerome Russel bleach it burns like hell and damaged my ends. My hair has been healthier since I switched to professional bleach) I was attempting to go silver/grey but we just couldn’t lighten my hair enough for it to work so this was the result. I actually loved it even though I only kept it for a couple of months. When I started my university course in September 2016 some of the people I met actually thought I was a natural blonde. I’m still proud of how well I pulled it off for a pale emo kid.

I went green simply because I was bored and wanted to change it up. I’ve always wanted coloured hair and green was just the weirdest I could think to go and the most extreme of a step. Blues, pinks and purples are common - green no so much. For this colour, I applied 2 bottles of Crazy Colours Pine Green directly onto my pre-lightened hair. The green turned out more of an emerald than pine but I still enjoyed how the colour complimented both my skin tone and my eye colour. I am not a fan of my hair curled as I feel it makes me look a lot younger than I am but the colour itself was rad af. Also, I’m not sure what the hell was up with my makeup that day, I swear I’m better at makeup than this.
Once I’ve done every colour I can think of I will probably return to some shade of green, maybe even a neon take on it. I still miss my forest queen vibes even if I have moved onto mermaid and unicorn levels.

This wasn’t me redying it more the green faded to this super rad mermaid-esque green/blue. Towards the ends of my hair, the silvery tone that I was aiming for when I first went blonde was coming through and adding to the underwater vibe. Thankfully my makeup also seemed to improve over the couple of months it took my hair to fade, I’m improving I swear!
There aren’t many photos of this in between stage, my best friend/personal photographer was back home in northern Ireland, but it contrasted well with the neutral pallet of my wardrobe. This colour is stained to my bleached hair so ends up becoming a part of whatever my current colour fades to.

Since my hair had faded to a blue I thought I might as well stay on the same side of the colour wheel and throw some purple on next. I only bleached my roots not lifting any colour from the pre-coloured hair. For this colour, I strayed away from my normal loyalty to Crazy Colour and tried the Superdrug exclusive Colour Freedom in the shade Mystic Purple. I wasn’t really sure what I was expecting from this brand but the colour washed out of my freshly bleached hair extremely quickly while holding onto my more damaged ends without much of a struggle. I didn’t enjoy this colour as much as the green but I might return to it again some day. It was definitely vibrant and looking back I forget how purple it was.

At this point my hair had faded so much at the roots I decided to just put another dye over the top without bleaching it. I opted for Denim Blue by Colour Freedom as my housemate had a bottle left from doing her own. At first, the colour was bright and vibrant contrasting with my love for black shirts while matching my unnecessarily bright lipsticks but by the end of March, it had already faded to this pastel blue and almost silvery purple. I enjoyed this muted pastel mermaid more than the brighter version as I feel it fits my general aesthetic more. The only problem at this stage was the dreaded regrowth and dark roots.
A P R I L | 2 0 1 7

My hair was dark and muted and my roots were awful, to say the least. There are so many different blues and purples all faded in together and I was getting sick of it. I wanted change. So just after my 19th birthday we rebleached my roots and threw some new colours together.
Initially, I wanted the colour of my roots all over my hair but there was only one bottle of ION in Candy Floss when we went to Sallys so I picked up another bottle in Hot Pink and decided to just through it on and see what would happen. I put the Candy Floss on my roots first running out just as I had covered all of my freshly bleached hair. In order to be able to cover the rest, I pastelised the Hot Pink with my coconut and almond conditioner in an attempt to get it to cover the blue and purple mess. I ended up with too much dye. The Hot Pink ended up as more of a pink toned purple but it blended well with the bright roots. This may be my favourite colour combination so far but I am already planning the next.
