Tumblr media
I'm feeling like doing a public service today, so if you want to watch the mess that is Fighting for Love for Wang RuiChang or because of two women get married for plot reasons, I got the what to skip for you since I was stupid enough to watch the whole thing
For starting out: This drama is about Mai (Zhang TianAi), who is a poor orphan who wants to avenge her parents, living in Shengdu, the capital of Nanxia. She watched them get killed by henchmen and her adoptive brother Chen Qi 9 years ago. To move freely in the world, she disguised herself as a man since then. My Drama List is not representing her life well since she is in fact not roaming the martial arts world when we meet her but doing petty crime to fund her life and revenge quest. For plot reasons she saves the life of male lead Shang YiZhi (Zhang HaoWei), a silly son of a Marquis. He invites her to stay at his house where he sees her back when she takes a bath and finds out that she is actually a woman because heavens beware of a man falling in love with another man. He doesn't tell anyone that she's female though so it's funny to see people react to him being overly protective of Mai. (Seriously the amount of times his attendant steps out when those two hang out. Mu Bai is an ally)
His father, a general, dies from a bad medicine prescription upon returning from the border. His mother is the sister of the emperor and fears for his life so she uses her sisterly influence to send YiZhi to the border to take over his father's army. We also find out that his mother is actually his aunt because he is the son of the late crown prince. This is why the emperor wants to kill him, though he doesn't know his real identity. See the emperor is a paranoid cuckoo bananas dude and likes to have cleavage and dance and get people killed and look at the sun through his fingers.
Also for all the things this drama probably cut to get to the 36 episodes they really HAD TO keep in every time the 700 sliding doors between his living and office quarters are opened and closed to emphasize how removed from the world he is. The things those sliding doors operators have seen!
Meanwhile Mai travels to a border city to meet a man who knows where Chen Qi is. To get into the border city, she steals a passport from Chang YuQing (Wang RuiChang) who is from the enemy country Beimo and happens to be on a spy mission.
So if you only watch for Wang RuiChang, enter at episode 3 at 35:00.
But be warned, his character is minor and if there was ever any more backstory to him shot to explain his motivations, his sworn brotherhood with Cui Yan and the trouble of the Chang family at the court of Beimo or why Chen Qi hates the Chang family, it was all cut (or I already forgot about it). I told you this drama is a mess.
Tumblr media
This is also a good time for the people who want to watch for the two women getting married (spoiler alert: it's one sided love and a marriage to proof that Mai is a man) because YuQing and his army sack the city and this is when Mai rescues teenager Xiu'er (Jiang YunXi) as a promise to a prison guard. Xiu'er got a crush on her and has no clue that Mai is a woman until they get engaged. For Mai she is someone who needs to be protected and she wants to marry her off to her bestie before.
Tumblr media
Also pictured next to Mai feminist icon Tang ShaoYi a true dage who got no problem with Mai being in the army once he finds out and just wants to be bros with her.
Mai finds out that Chen Qi is actually the marshal of the Beimo army that is attacking Nanxia's border so she decides to enlist to fight him on the battlefield. Her father actually taught her battle tactics and she read the art of war so obviously she rises through the ranks despite going absent without leave and other things that would get you executed if the general of the army wasn't in love with you.
Plot (which I won't spoil) that includes Wang RuiChang sometimes more and often less happens until ep 22, when Yizhi gets summoned back to the capital and Mai joins him with his other trusted guys and Xiu'er (she is an afterthought mainly). This is also when the screenwriters or the editors lost any interest in Beimo apart from some captive prince stuff, so if you are only watching for Wang RuiChang you can skip ahead after his (great) scene in ep 22.
In Shengdu too much time is spent on Yizhi and his court stuff, like I want this to be about Mai doing cool army stuff not some badly written and edited succession to the throne plot. She does use her plotting skills for him to survive because dude is a silly jerk who is not worthy of her and yet she loves him. sigh.
queer intermission
Due to something that happened before ep 22 the rumor that Mai is a woman spreads in her army causing unrest which leads to Xiu'er proposing marriage to her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(THEY NEVER SHOW THE ACTUAL DIVORCE???)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is shampoo commercial territory. Just that for censorship reasons Xiu'er emphasizes that Mai is too important for the army and therefore the whole country to get executed just for being a woman and also she still owes her for saving her life back in the day.
Tang dage gets it with her reasoning.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They're having the cross-cupped wine on camera but not the bowing to heaven, parents and each other to not piss off the censors.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once they are in the bridal chamber/tent someone spies on them and sees Mai without her binder so he gets killed. End of wedding. Why is Xiu'er in the army camp in the first place? During the border defense arc she heard that Mai got wounded and went to tend to her and never left.
Xiu'er is plot relevant again in ep 32 and is in the final episode but apart from that she is little more than Mai's attendant.
Tumblr media
Mai continues to wear male attire most of the time, after she stopped being undercover, apart from the time she actually had to be in the harem and hated it.
end of intermission
ok back to the Wang RuiChang scenes
What is relevant for getting what is going on once you jump back in:
Yizhi's mother didn't go through hiding Yizhi from the emperor for Yizhi to not become emperor so she throws him into the struggle for the throne against his will. He does not want to do that and just be with Mai. (the good old putting the greater good above ones personal desires it never gets old. Of course his mother wins by guilt tripping him into becoming emperor by getting herself killed.) People get kidnapped, people get killed. Mai becomes the master of the emperor's grandson.
Yizhi's mother had made an agreement with the prime-minister that he would help Yizhi to the throne and in turn Yizhi would marry his daughter further increasing the prime-minister's influence in court. (like me you will think dude you are already having the highest office under the emperor what is your deal, well he wants his family to be the rulers of Nanxia eventually. dude likes to draw tigers in his spare time so you know his deal)
So who do we need to show up? Yuqing! So Mai can be implicated as a Beimo spy by the prime-minister. Luckily Yizhi had killed Yuqing's sworn brother earlier on so Yuqing had a reason to sneak into Shengdu to make an attempt on Yizhi's life at the beginning of episode 30 (it was only 8 episodes without him but it felt like eons).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We do get a little of him being cheeky in ep 31
Tumblr media
He leaves in ep 31 and shows up again in ep 35 (starting ~min 15) and 36.
ep 31-35 So after Yizhi married the prime-minister's daughter and she becomes empress, Mai was devastated and went on a bender. The prime-minister turns the court against Mai so she loses her general job. She asks Yizhi for the mansion of her father and lives there, wallowing in lovesickness, grief and childhood trauma until Yizhi sends the edict to make her his honored imperial consort. She reluctantly lives in the harem but hates being locked up (she is a general gdi), dealing with the jealous empress and also refuses Yizhi so they strike a deal that allows her to live outside. More palace stuff happens with the prime-minister.
When the Beimo army invades again, she is the most capable to do it, so she gets her army back and sets off to fight against Beimo in episode 35.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think there must have been more filmed and then cut for length because some things are alluded too that would have required some scenes beforehand. Ultimately this drama feels rather lifeless and is just going through the motions apart from some characters adding some sparkle.
The ending does make sense, gotta love that she didn't let herself get locked up in the harem for that loser.
Tumblr media
I need to stop watching ascending to the throne dramas that are not well written, why do I keep doing this to myself? Oh right, because I thought that this would be about a female general and ignored that he is the son of the legitimate crown prince. Of course he had to become emperor xP

I'm so bored of fighting for love. I am begging the ML to listen to his mom and just get out of my girl's life. Marry the Zerou girl and become emperor like a normal person. At least Chang Yuqing is back in ep 30.

obscure chinapuri theory #2
(partly inspired by @chinapuri‘s comment on a previous post!)
So I was thinking about how Tian Zilong’s name literally means ‘dragon child’ and then, wait: (no this post is about Yuqing not Haiguang)
If Chinapuri was filmed/released/aired around 2018/19 and assuming the ‘timeline’ is accurate, the 18 year old third years in 2018 would be born in 2000. In the Chinese zodiac, 2000 is the year of the dragon.
Here’s the interesting part: originally, Echizen Ryoma’s name was supposed to be transliterated into Long Ma (龙马), the same name used in the Chinese dubs. Long Ma literally means ‘dragon horse’.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Promotional images before the show and characters’ name changes.)
In the zodiac, the year of the horse is two years after the year of the dragon. Lu Xia / Long Ma would be born in 2002, which is the year of the horse.
If the Yuqing third years are the ‘dragons’ of the team, Lu Xia / Long Ma would be a ‘dragon horse’ growing into Yuqing’s pillar. He’s got the strength and potential of a dragon, but like a young impatient horse, he has to learn how to develop it before he can take over.
But what’s the year in between the dragon and the horse?
Tumblr media
The second years would be born in 2001, the year of the snake. Baiyang’s nickname / motif is the viper - he’s Yuqing’s next leader, the transition point before Lu Xia / Long Ma is ready.
TL;DR -  Mu Siyang (+ third years) = dragon -> Zhang Baiyang (+ second years) = snake -> Lu Xia (+first years) = horse

[FULL] E9 _ Our Songs
- Ren Xianqi x Liu Yuning - Zhou Huajian x Jiang Yiqiao - Na Ying | Angela Chang x Xiao Zhan - Hacken Lee x Zhou Shen - Fei Yuqing x Ayanga
(Just for my own curiosity’s sake: Ayanga ‘87 | Yuning ‘87 | Zhan ‘91 | Shen ‘92 | Yiqiao ‘94)
9:03 - MC: I personally think there are two teams who have more pressure than the others. One of them is Fei Yuching x Ayanga- because they are a whole new group. The time they’ve had to work with each other is short. The other group is Na Ying x Xiao Zhan.  XZ: /nods/ MC: Because- in case. I’m saying IN CASE- you know what I’m saying right? XZ: /feeling the pressure/ MC: Na-jie still wants to come back, you know? Angela is only here as a lifesaver, the more important one is you. Will you let Na-jie come back? XZ: I.. definitely will!
9:48 - MC: The rounds have already been decided backstage. Would the person who picked #1 (first to go) please stand up. /Ren Xianqi x Liu Yuning stand up/ - Backstage - 9:56 - RXQ: Xiao Yu, you tell me to stop and I’ll stop. LYN: Ok, 3-2-1, stop! (There’s only 2 envelopes left) ZS: I just hope you don’t pick #1. Thank you. XZ: !! Last time I picked the envelope and it was #1. It scared me to death. ZS: Your hands are better! AC: We have no choice now. XZ: It can’t be number 1 right? IT IS. But since Na-Zhan team won in popularity in the online voting, they are allowed to switch places with another team. AC: Alright then! Excuse us! AC: /stops in front of FYQ/ Xiao-ge… FYQ: … yes? AC: No, nothing. /moves on/ FYQ: Scared me to death… LYN: /avoiding all eye contact/ Hacken: Ok, come on. Take it. ZS: /WHAT??!/ AC: I don’t like the number 4. /takes 3/ RXQ&LYN: … :’) AC: It’s ok. I saw your outfits and I thought that you would have something really exciting. XZ: Suitable to start the show. RXQ: No problem.
11:37 - MC: What song have you brought for us today? LYN: “Ru Guo Yun Zhi Dao” RXQ: /to aYUNga/ Do you know? A: How do I not know??
Ren Xianqi x Liu Yuning - 如果雲知道 (Ru Guo Yun Zhi Dao (If The Clouds Know)) [I love (1) rock-ballad boy: Liu Yuning]
Zhou Huajian x Jiang Yiqiao - 孤枕难眠 (Gu Zhen Nan Mian (Sleepless)) (Yiqiao is sounding better and better every week!)
25:32 - MC: Let’s hear from someone- who do you want to hear? ZHJ: How about Xiao-ge? FYQ: […] This song is deeply representative of Huajian’s music. As soon as you hear his songs on the radio- the DJ doesn’t even need to introduce the song. You hear his unique voice, his years of music, even listening a hundred times, you won’t grow tired of his voice. Very good. ZHJ: Thank you, thank you. FYQ: I’m sure your points will be high as well. Just wait and see. MC: I know now the reason FYQ is sitting in the middle. After each of you sing, he knows how to elicit votes. “Your points will definitely be high.” FYQ: I’m sure. Everyone sounds good. ZHJ: He’s too good of a person. At the very end his points will be the highest.
26:54: ZHJ: I listened to Xiao-ge’s songs growing up. FYQ: /K.O/ This.. this IS true. I debuted way before him. When he debuted- his person, his voice- was just like a dark horse. ZHJ: Oh, no, no. My generation all did imitations of him. FYQ: Ah. – 27:35 - MC: Can you really imitate him? ZHJ: There was no helping it! At that time 8 out of 10 songs were his! MC: HJ-ge, the hardest thing is having the real thing here, and still performing. Xiao-ge. Could you please come and stand by ZHJ? ZHJ: I didn’t realize the situation would become this big. I was half joking. FYQ: I was able to see HJ a lot on shows back then. We would always find the time to joke around with him. We would always use his songs- /starts the impersonation/ ZHJ: When I released my own albums, I always said that one day I would have FYQ impersonate MY songs. When he does, that’s when you know you’ve made it. This was a real goal. I’m not kidding. FYQ: Thank you, thank you. ZHJ: I really learned a lot of his songs. MC: Right, so HJ-ge. Let’s be fair here. (FYQ sang ZHJ, so ZHJ HAS TO sing FYQ) FYQ: My songs might be a little difficult for him. ZHJ: At that time there was one song you HAD to sing. Everywhere you went, you heard this song. FYQ: Oh, alright. Let’s hear it. I was originally trying to give you a way out… ZHJ: No, no. I prepared for this! – ZHJ: And then when I sang my own songs after, I forgot to change back (to his original voice)
30:28 - MC: Now that we’ve heard from the senior, let’s hear from the junior. RXQ: I don’t dare critique him. Because we all consider HJ to be the Nation’s Song King. His songs really stir up people’s emotions and are very popular. Before, HJ would invite us juniors to open for him at his concerts. We all thought- since it’s his concert, let’s just sing however we want. We tried out a lot of different effects, atmospheres, and singing styles. He gave us a huge space for us to improve ourselves. So we are all very thankful to him.
Angela Chang x Xiao Zhan - Faded (remix) (HOLY SHIT!!!!)
33:31 - XZ: When I sang with Na-jie, we did more quiet, lyrical songs. I’ve always wanted to try something with some more stage presence and get people hyped up.  AC: Then let’s go for something explosive! XZ: Something that can get people jumping. Stand up! Don’t sit there. Move your left hand, your right hand- get moving!
34:07 - AC: Do you feel like we’re missing something? XZ: Yes! AC: The two of us will be very hyped up, yes, but- XZ: I know what we’re missing! A drink! [LOL, he needs to be drunk to get in the mood?]
37:00 - [LOL. Liu Yuning. SAME THO.]
40:39 - LYN: I thought it was amazing. I started rocking out. Really hyped up. Also AC’s high note was really amazing.  JYQ: I was totally entranced by the stage- immersed in Angela’s glamour, and XZ’s sexiness.  ZHJ: !! XZ: !! ?? /Me??? Sexy??/ MC: Did you discuss with ZHJ about the word “sexy”?  JYQ: What do you think, master? ZHJ: No, oh no. (Was not consulted on the use of the word “sexy”) But I have another feeling. Angela came and did what Na-jie could not.  XZ: /uh oh/ ZHJ: If Angela weren’t here- you wouldn’t have picked this song, or this type of performance. It was fun. When Na-jie comes back I won’t be used to it.
41:44 - MC: Angela- after you came I suddenly saw a different side of XZ. I had never before seen his ending pose like this before. His eyes were filled with a “killing” intent. My goodness. AC: The first time I came here I wasn’t too familiar with what sort of arrangement or music to consider. So this time, I wanted to make some changes, and I thought that XZ would resent me, but he said, “OK! We can try it out!” XZ: I’ve been waiting a long time for this. MC: !! Xiao Zhan. Are you SURE you’ve been “waiting a long time” for this? [hinting that xz has been unfulfilled with Na-jie] XZ: … Wait. What do you mean. There’s a problem with this sentence. I don’t know how to play this game of chess. MC: See. He’s filmed with me for a long time already. He knows how to maneuver around my comments. What I’m trying to say is.. your words.. there’s a possibility Na-jie could be listening. XZ: !! MC: AND! Singing with Na-jie, and singing with Angela… is there a difference? XZ: /mouthing nonsense, but not saying anything/ [LOL. GOOD CALL.] XZ: These words can get me in trouble, you know.
43:18 - MC: Did the English present any difficulty for you? XZ: Not really. :) MC: Did the DJ table present any difficulty? XZ: Oh, yes! Yes! That did. /xz practicing backstage, but making scary ghost sounds instead/
Hacken Lee x Zhou Shen - 那片海 (Na Pian Hai) (LOL at Hacken trying to get ShenShen to play sports. The acapella in the beginning of the song. The high notes. Transcendent.)
Fei Yuqing x Ayanga - 贝加尔湖畔 (Bei Jia Er Hu Pan)
Current Rankings: 1 - LKQ x ZS (two point difference between Ranks 1 and 2) 2 - FYQ x Ayanga 3 - AC x XZ 4 - RXQ x LYN (1 point difference from Rank 3) 5 - ZHJ x JYQ (2 point difference from Rank 4)

I can ask you a question about the rebranding? Do you know why they did that. Or are there versions out there with Lu Xia as Long Ma? I thought it was really strange since I read synopsis saying his name was Long Ma and I could clearly see their lips saying it also 😂. The series wasnt completely dubbed over was it? Cause I know sometimes cdramas are. I'm hoping that all the actors' voices are their own 😊
Everything that gets aired in China has to be reviewed by the National Radio and Television Administration, although they never released an official statement, but it’s safe to presume the name changes is because it didn’t pass the review. For whatever reason they deemed the names to be inappropriate, the guesses are it’s not inspirational/promotes a good image enough, or maybe because they are iffy about it being a Japanese adaptation…honestly China is weird like that 🙄🙄 if they didn’t change it, it won’t be aired. The Long Ma edition? Lost in the void forever-ever-er…
The whole change was so sudden that in a lot of early promo videos/pictures it had the original name and logo. It went from Wang Qiu Shao Nian (Tennis Juniors) to Fen Dou Ba Shao Nian. The original names they had for the main cast was actually very similar to the Japanese names with a bit of Chinese name localisation. Here’s an example:
Tezuka Kunimitsu (手塚国光) →  Kou Guoguang (寇国光) → Mu Siyang (穆司阳)
As we can see, they did keep the kanji for it. They actually put a bit of thought in the names, Kou(寇) the surname originated in ancient China, people with such surname are people in power (eg. police, government). Sikou(司寇) is also a title given to people in power. It seems to me they picked the names with care, as Siyang is a leader, Yang(阳) means sun, so naturally he’s a leader with light the others follow. The kanji 国光 means country and light as well.
As far as I’m concerned, only the Yuqing cast had name changes, the other schools didn’t(?) this is why their uniform also says Qingxue (青学) and not Yuqing. The dub is also the actors’ voices!
If we really wanted a Chinese adaption with names that are very close to the original, lets not forget this exists lmao

Eternal Love - Episode 11
Tumblr media
Awwww, that opening though. It give me chills every time.
Anybody else loves a lot Qing Qiu? It’s so beautiful. Anyways, that morning Bai Zhen comes to Bai Qian’s place, but Migu says she’s not there. However Zhe Yan has came back. He’s going to explain to him the new wedding arrangements for Bai Qian.
Dong Hua wakes up Fengjiu and asks her how come she’s there. She says she followed her aunt and Donghua wonders if her aunt has any connections with Kunlunxu. So he didn’t know Si Yin was Bai Qian, well I guess he might have his doubts now that he saw the roll Bai Qian left. Fengjiu says her aunt doesn’t have any connections with them.
Li Jing went to Si Yin’s old quarters in Kunlun, still thinking of their past relationship. You can’t have back what you messed up dude. He ends up bumping into Donghua and Fengjiu. Siming is waiting for Donghua at the entrance of Kunlunxu and Donghua tells him about how somebody already knew about the bell being about to break open and sealing it back by themselves. And that person is most likely Bai Qian. Oh, Siming gossiping with Fengjiu. I love it. They are confused about how could Bai Qian know of the magic to seal the bell when she never went out of Qing Qiu ever since she was born, that and the fact that Mo Yuan never had any girls as disciple. Hearing what Shao Xing did, Fengjiu is really upset and wants to go get revenge. I missed Siming’s gossiping aww.
The Heavenly Lord lets Sangji take Shao Xing with him, but he can neve give her any title. On their way out, Fengjiu points her sword at Fengjiu. Fortunately, Siming brings peace for a while, but it won’t stop Fengjiu from yelling at Sangji. She puts back her sword only when Donghua tells her. Donghua asks Shao Xing about Si Yin, but Shao Xing says she doesn’t know. He insists a little more, but then Sangji says she really doesn’t know. Fengjiu keeps on following Donghua but as soon as he enters the Taichen palace, the guards don’t let her in. So she has to find another way to get in.
On Junji mountain, the Jinni beast noticed that Bai Qian is living there and doesn’t like having a human on his territory. When he gets in the house and sees the Yuqing Kunlun fan, he runs away. He’s wondering how come a female human can have that fan that used to belong to Mo Yuan’s disciple. But as he wonders, he gets caught by Ye Hua. Bai Qian is oblivious to all of this, when she sees red lightning, she’s like, that’s weird.
Their fight get to town and Jinni beast scares every body off. When he transforms in his animal form, Ye Hua has a little trouble containing him. He remembers he must not interfere with the civilians life. But there’s a little child in danger and he transforms in his dragon form to protect the child even though he’s not supposed to be seen in that form by the mortals. Then he kills the Jinni beast with a light beam. KAMEHAMEHAAAAA! That’s the spirit. He’s badly injured by the fight and changes in a smaller form to recuperate. And that’s how Bai Qian finds him. He recognizes Bai Qian as the boy in his dreams. Then Bai Qian says he’s the most handsome snake she ever saw hahaha. Hm... It’s a dragon Bai Qian, not a snake hahaha! How cute <3 So Ye Hua has to wait for three days before he can take back his human form. Bai Qian decides to keep him, well if he wants to leave, she won’t interfere, but he can never have another owner hahaa. Ye Hua is so “excuse meeee? owneeer?” Then she leaves him and he recognizes her fan.
To stabilize the power, Su Jin offers herself as concubines to the Heavenly Lord. He’s like well but no. I love her hairstyle though. She says that if he feels bad about it, he just has to promise her that after, no matter what is her wish, he shall make it come true for her. That would be enough to endure the sacrifice... That plan is stupid.
Bai Qian is taking care of her little snake. She tries to feed him raw meat and Ye Hua is like, well I don’t like my meat to be raw, I like it cooked. She kisses him to convince him to eat, but he’s offended hahaha. I love the two of them <3 She’s like ohh, the snakes here are so smart, you even know how to chose what you like to eat. So she takes him out to the market and Bai Ye Hua is like, it’s about to rain you stupid. So Ye Hua goes out and tells the immortal responsible for rain to not make it rain that day and goes back to the heavens.
Yan Zhi gets in town. She asks around about what happened and realizes it’s linked to the Jinni beast and she thinks that if she finds him, she might find her brother Li Yuan!
Bai Qian gets in trouble because of her fan. A dude accuses her of stealing it from him. He says it’s the Yuqing kunlun fan and right then Yan Zhi comes in the tea house.
And it ends on that note. Sooooo looking forward the next episode. I loved Yan Zhi. She’s such a sweet girl!

[ENG] 20190123 SinaEnt/Yuqing Lab interview with ZTAO
[ENG] 20190123 SinaEnt/Yuqing Lab interview with #ZTAO
Link to original: https://goo.gl/Fy2GGN
Huang Zitao:  Don’t be too cocky in front of me, newbies! You’re “dead” if I catch you!
Today, I went to have a chat with Huang Zitao
Friends, have you ever accidentally unliked or unfriended your idol because he changed his social media account id?
That has happened to Huang Zitao’s fans.
Recently, Huang Zitao, in conjunction with his upcoming new drama, changed his weibo ID to “Chong Liming is coming”, something that would definitely confused people who don’t follow him (Chong Liming is the character he’s playing)
Paired with that anime avatar, if you’re not a fan, who could tell that this is a star???
Since Huang Zitao changed his id to “Chong Liming is coming” before the drama Yan Shi Fan is due to air.. does that mean that, after it airs, it will change to ““Chong Liming is now here”, “Chong Liming is leaving”, ““Chong Liming goodbye”…. Does he know that even for paying members, you can only change your weibo ID 5 times in a year?
“Why don’t you ask him directly” says my boss, showing up behind me, with a glass of tea in hand.
“eh? My hand shook, and then as destiny would have it, I got the assignment to go to the press conference for Yan Shi Fan.1 minute before it struck one on 22nd Jan 2019, I made my way through loads of floral displays from fans to go meet Taotao. I’ll remember this minute because of the strange mixture of smells from the roses and the packed lunches by the side.
We’ve only just finished setting up the machines when Huang Zitao arrived in a hurry, saying “ah I’m so sorry”, while commenting to me about lunch being too spicy. Then he went asking for water from his staff. Your Tao is still so very interesting and cute.
After sitting down, Tao suddenly stood up again, saying that he wishes to see how his new hairstyle looks. He says that since it’s new, he doesn’t know whether it looks good on camera.
After checking the photograph, he said he’s pretty satisfied with it, and would give his hairstyle, “6-7 points I guess~”
“Didn’t you say you’re pretty satisfied? That’s only a passing score?”
“well it’s for the camera,  so it’ll be perfect if I was thinner.” As he said that, he kneaded/pinched his chin.
Sparring verbally with me and then with himself
The new hairstyle is to refresh himself, give himself a new start in the new year. Taotao says that it doesn’t matter if it looks good or not. Him checking the camera is also because he had “rested for slightly more than half a month, and didn’t do much except eat every day.” So he feared that he would look fat in front of the cameras, after all, he still has to be scrutinized by the rest of the world.
“If I were thinner, and my chin was sharper, it would be perfect.” .
Speaking of sharp chins, that reminds me of the much treasured bout of happiness brought about the many videos of Huang Zitao’s Little Elf.
I told him that many folks are waiting for updates to that Little Elf series, so when is he intending to do an update to satisfy the fans?
Adorable as he is, Taotao refused, saying, “if you all feel that that is good, that watch the old stuff. I won’t do it again simply because it got popular after you all watched it. I won’t! He says he is not willing to just simply following what is trending/popular, not even if he is the one who started it!
Fine, Boss Huang is really very strict.
I quietly rebutted, “You previously said that Little Elf is ugly, but yet your actions say otherwise!”
Taotao explained that he was really letting go of himself when talking that way, “you have to know that when I’m recording that, the sound and my expressions are all especially…tsk.. ah! You won’t want to see how I actually look like when recording Little Elf. “
We all know that this year, all the male idol audition variety shows will be highly competitive against each other. I asked him if he had any suggestions for the boys.
Taotao feel that he definitely is supportive if the candidate is grounded with his dream/goal in mind. However, many youngsters these days are very cocky/overconfident. They don’t even greet their seniors when they see them, he feels that that is very rude.
He gave an example. Previously when filming an advert, he overheard a staff member saying that a newbie basically just refused to film on set, and even threw the script at others.
“Why be an idol/artiste in that case? In any way, don’t let me catch them in action. They’re dead if so, really.”
Cried for 8 months, nearly sunk into depression
I didn’t’ forget the purpose of my trip, and so I asked him if he was going to change his weibo id again after the drama “Yan Shi Fan” airs. “
Taotao replied firmly, “Nope! I know that you can only change your weibo id 5 times a year.” So he’ll keep Chong Liming in the “he’s coming” condition, until he finishes watching the drama with everyone.
“So have you thought about what your next ID is going to be yet?”
 “Yes!”
“What is it?”
Huang Zitao (so so innocent) , “It’s XXXXX” (am not revealing it for now for Taotao’s sake)
“You do know that by revealing it, everyone will go fight for that ID first?”
Huang Zitao “??? Then why did you trick me???”
After have tricked Taotao, I felt really good, and so I continued to tell him that fans tried to hold on to his previous id “@CPOPKING-黄子韬”, in case he wanted it back.
Taotao said it was alright, “It’s ok, hold on it. That id’s a bit much anyway, there are many news ids out there~”
Looks like Taotao’s really quite satisfied with the character Chong Liming. He’s not even going to look back on that weibo id change.
When asked about how he understands Chong Liming’s character, he says, “He’s someone who’s so much more tired/exhausted living than dead, and cries 3 times a day.”
So he had crying scenes every day, and a major crying scene every 3 days. “I basically cried for 8 months, and nearly got depression.” Huang Zitao said, Jackie Chan even sent him a very long message, telling him how to deal with all the negative emotions that result from acting.
Making his own real person variety show
Before coming for the interview, I have asked fans for questions on weibo, so Taotao answered some here. Such as the concert that everyone’s so concerned about.
Taotao says that there’ll only be one concert this year and it’ll be in June in Shanghai. You all can start planning your schedule~ He says he wishes to rest for the first half of the year, so he won’t be filming dramas. He’s just going to write songs, prep for his concert and he also intends to release an album this year.
That’s called resting?? Ok…
So what does he like to do when “resting”?
Taotao looked at me, perplexed. “Go out! Play! What else? Eat & drink and basically have fun. “
And then he started counting for me, saying that he likes driving, watching movies (having watched Bumblebee and Aquaman recently, he recommends it to fans) and getting friends to go over to his place for a chit chat. But they can only chat now, because he’s gotten the rabies vaccine shot, so he can’t drink.
After “resting”, in May, his company will be cooperating with another platform to present a travel related real person/life variety show, and he has two dramas coming in the latter half of the year.
Even though he doesn’t want to exhaust himself through variety shows, he feels that he should still do at least one per year. Because he likes travelling, so he wishes to do the sort of programme where one really focuses on the travel, with no  missions. “It’s the sort of variety show that shows you who’s generous and who’s petty, the kind of loads of details.”
“So are you a generous or petty traveller?” I thought he would say the former, but he’s very clear about the situation. “It depends on who I’m with. If I don’t like that person, I won’t spare a single cent. But if it’s someone I like, then it doesn’t matter. “
So now I have gotten all the key information for you all. I said good bye to Tao and walked out of the interview room, as I heard him say (cutely) to staff, “ahhh haven’t done an interview in ages, I feel I don’t know how to talk much anymore~~”
Now there are plenty of fans outside the interview room waiting to enter the hall. I revealed to the fans as I left, “Huang Zitao’s hairstyle today is very handsome”. Everyone went ahhhhhh!!
So I left amidst all those envious looks..
A video of an interview is coming but here’s an extract of it:
Q: Your first impression of Chong Liming when reading the script?
Tao: In the beginning I had not read the script, it was the producer Liang Zhenhua who told me the story. I took on the project because he absolutely moved me. Chong Liming is the sort who cries three times a day, no joke. I basically have crying scenes every day and a big one every 3 days. He’s actually a very pitiful person. He looks as if nothing matters on the surface, but he’s just holding it all inside. Basically he’s so much more exhausted living than dying.
Q: Do you think you share similarities with Chong Liming
Tao: I don’t think so. I live a happy life (laughs heartily)
Q: You’ve set up a new company in 2018, so what are the plans for the company?
Tao: My dad’s managing it. I’m just in charge of completing my acting projects. The plan is to well, achieve something. Hope the things produced by our company will be well liked and well received, doesn’t disappoint the market and audience. And if I’m in it, then all the more I’ll have ensure it doesn’t disappoint.
Q: Chinese New Year is near, so can you reveal your year end prize with us, Boss Huang?
Tao: My dad’s in charge of that.. I.. I want year end prize too!! Money will do!!! Hahahaha! If it’s a lucky draw, I hope others in the company will get more. If I get something big, I’ll just split it on the spot, but I’m not the lucky kind.
Q: Evaluate/comment on your two variety shows last year.
Tao: Actually, the street dance and produce 101 programs… I don’t think I’m particularly suited to those. They required more outstanding candidates. There’s not much meaning to me being a mentor. I prefer Takes A Real Man, with everyone living and experiencing life together. That sort of show I liked, so I want to make something like that.
Q: Actually everyone likes the sequence of videos which showed you getting startled/a fright. They feel it’s funny. What’s your view on that?
Tao: Pretty good. That’s my natural reaction. I feel that as an artiste, no matter what I do, be it when I’m on a variety show or the gifs produced after, it’s good that it brings laughter to all. At least everyone’s smiling because of me, that’s the energy I bring to everyone I guess.
Q: You’re not scared of being labelled a comedian?
Tao: nope. I have my works.
Q: There will be 2-300 new male idols from all those male audition shows this year. As an experienced senior, what suggestions do you have for them?
Tao: if they have their dreams in mind, then I would support. But a lot of youngsters these days are very cocky. Some don’t even manage basic courtesy, not even greeting seniors when they see them. Very arrogant and rude. For example, I overheard a staff member saying that a newbie basically just refused to film on set, and even threw the script at others. Why be an idol/artiste in that case? In any way, don’t let me catch them in action. They’re dead if so, really.
Q: So promote yourself to all those who will fall in love/like you after watching Yan Shi Fan
Tao: If you all got to know me or like me through Yan Shi Fan, I hope you all can better understand just what kind of artiste I am. When a show is airing, I’ll be super active. But when I’m working, I’ll be totally silent. That’s because of the process of me learning, accumulating experiences while trying to present a better piece of work. I believe my following works will be better and better and won’t disappoint everyone. And I hope everyone can really treat me as an actor, and not a singer who happens to be act. I really want to break that label… so If I don’t manage to with these 3 dramas, then I’ll keep trying.. next year I’ll continue to work hard at filming.. if I don’t break it by 30.. then I guess not then.. (laughs)
Q: So what happens then?
Tao: I tell you, that won’t happen. It will definitely be better and better. Can’t become an actor after Yan Shi Fan finish airing. I cried for those 8 months, almost getting depression. I messaged Jackie Chan who sent me such a long message, saying how I can deal with it. Even though you see that I’m all smiles and laugher when chasing “The Negotiator”.. well, in part that was to promote the show, but secondly, I forget that I’m the character when I’m watching it. When filming Yan Shi Fan, the happiest thing was for me to back and watch a new episode every night. So I was really exhausted filming this, I feel that all that effort will definitely be rewarded!

Great music show to watch: Wo Men De Ge / Chinese Idol-Our Song
Tumblr media
Rough summary of the show (1st season: 12 eps): Sixteen Chinese artists  (8 young artists; 8 famous veterans), have to form teams of 1 veteran + 1 young artist each. Once they form a pair, the veteran and young artist stay together, collaborate to create new performances each week, and compete with the other teams. The audience is divided into equal age groups and vote for their fave performance each turn. The final winner gets the title of “2-person team with a golden voice”.
Reasons to watch, in no particular order:
So much mutual respect, camaraderie and mutual appreciation. It is a competition, but there is never any sense of aggression or desperate wish to be the best. Competitiveness is minimal. When one team performs, the others show such genuine enjoyment: It’s a playful appreciation of music, the stage and one another.
A wonderful side-effect of minimal competitiveness: there is so little drama. Everyone has debuted or had a career already, so it’s not intense like a real survival show.
Xiao Zhan is a special case, but many young artists are singers more than idols. When those young artists speak, it’s more unrefined and a bit blunter. You get the sense that they make offhand remarks cause they felt like it, and aren’t trying to be an “attractive” person. I cannot stress how much more charming and natural that makes the show.
The veteran cast are big names in the Chinese music scene, but they’re all very fun. Every veteran can make fun of themselves, many are eager to try new things, and some are plain dorks. They get giddy, bicker, fumble...It makes the offstage parts just as fun as performances. Bonus: a nice part of Chinese culture is that an older person is not only respected but should also have a sense of generosity for younger ones’ blunders ( “bao rong”). So whether they signed up for it or not, it’s like each of the young artists is getting an elder sister/brother/dad/uncle for the show’s duration. It’s very platonic and heartening to watch.
There’s a wide-ranging variety of songs and some are flat out gorgeous. Old Chinese songs are good. Some of them are surreal. But the show’s not just tributes to old classics, there are also new and western songs. I'm still sobbing about the classics.
Some of the voices are beautiful sensory experiences. In the young ones: Zhou Shen, Liu Yuning, Ayanga. In the seniors: Fei Yuqing, Zhou Hua Jian, Luo Qi, Li Keqin, Na Ying, Angela Chang etc...When these people open their mouths to sing, you can hear that there’s substance regardless of age. Whoa. In terms of musical experience, this show has real substance.
You get to watch the teams’ chemistry grow over time. Some teams have great chemistry, I cannot stress this enough. Even the pairing-up process itself, based on blind auditions, is impish and fun.
Whether you prefer a music-oriented group or an entertainment/performance-led group, you will be served. The 16 artists are first divided into Group A or B for pairing up and initial rankings. Broadly speaking, Group A’s young artists are more music-oriented (Xiao Gui, Zhou Shen, Liu Yuning, Xu Weizhou), while Group B’s are more performance/entertainment-led (Ayanga, Li Ziting, Xiao Zhan, Jiang Yiqiao). All 8 veterans start as singing-focused but again, Group B’s play more with entertainment than Group A. Depending on your preference, you’ll find something interesting to watch either way (and from ep. 7 onwards, Groups A and B get mixed).
Despite the rough summary, the show’s format is not repetitive and evolves over the course of the season. You get different kinds of face-offs, promise.
The MC is just right: He’s funny but not focused on being funny, has a good rapport with many of the artists, has depth and doesn’t go overboard with his remarks.
This doesn’t sum up everything, but I have a lot of love for this show and it’s getting too long... 11 episodes have already been subbed so far, and by the looks of it, it is likely going to be fully subbed later on. Here is the link to the 1st Episode with English Subs.
Whether it’s just because you love Xiao Zhan or for other reasons, give this show a shot! It’s really wholesome and good. ;__;
