Prince Rupert by Ernest Crofts
Prince Rupert, Count Palatine of the Rhine and Duke of Bavaria (1619-1682) served under the Prince of Orange and in the English Civil War in 1642, serving the Royalist cause. He was named General of the Horse and raised money and troops tirelessly. He was named an Admiral and distinguished himself at the Battle of Texel in 1673, honored by Charles II for his bravery.
This dramatic action portrait of Prince Rupert depicts him leading a cavalry charge when he served as General of the Horse. Ernest Crofts used his considerable knowledge of military history in great detail here, defining the accoutrements of war in excellent fashion.

so one of my ancestors may have committed long-term identity theft
my 4th times great-grandma continues to be ridiculously elusive
so. most of the evidence points to her having the maiden name maloney, and being born in headington, oxfordshire. her marriage certificate, two of her nine children’s birth certificates, every census she ever completed
except
her eldest daughter’s birth certificate. which lists her maiden name as young. which would make her born to an unmarried mother in chalgrove, oxfordshire, 7-ish years earlier than she keeps telling people.
it also doesn’t help that she’s illiterate, but at the same time. young doesn’t sound at all similar to maloney/melony. it is possible she stole the other sarah’s identity - young had relatives living in headington so she could’ve been familiar with sarah through them, and stolen her identity when she realised she wanted to get married but didn’t want to reveal she didn’t know who her father was. and it helps that maloney’s father was dead, so even though maloney would’ve been underage (20 when it was 21), that wouldn’t pose an issue to their marriage.
most damningly for me, sarah doesn’t have any maloney relatives at her wedding (although in fairness, maloney’s parents were both dead). the witnesses are her husband’s stepfather and sister.
i’ve actually caved and ordered dna tests from ancestrydna and 23andme to see if that reveals anything about the issue (and because i’m missing a great-grandfather, thanks to her own great-granddaughter...) - if i match with any youngs or their other descendants, then sarah probably did some identity theft.
if i match with any maloneys from oxfordshire (...as opposed to on my mother’s side, as she’s from ireland), then she just randomly decided to change her maiden name while registering her eldest child. which. well. i’m still very suspicious.

(2022-06-18 to 2022-06-19) The Road to Chalgrove Field Battle TREAT the family to a fun day out at Thame's Summer Spectacular! Taking place on the eye-catching grounds at Chinnor RFC Thame between 11am-4pm across the weekend of June 18-19, there is plenty for adults and children to enjoy. From fairground rides, arts and crafts, morris dancing and much more, this is sure to be an enjoyable experience. And we haven't even mentioned the main event as this will all be happening amidst a battle. But don't fear if you hear swords clashing, pistols firing, and smell gunpowder, as The Sealed Knot are performing a re-enactment of the Road to Chalgrove Field. So, keep an eye out for John Hampden and his Parliamentarians in this English Civil War interpretation with the Royalists, which took place nearly 380 years ago! It should be a great spectacle celebrating local and national history! Tickets are priced at £10 per day, with anyone aged under 13 going free. This event is organised by Chinnor RFC Thame, The Sealed Knot and the Friends of Elms Park

The Martin-Baker MB 5 taking off from Chalgrove Airfield in 1948. Martin-Baker Aircraft Co. Ltd photo
Widely described as an excellent aircraft, highly maneuverable and a stable gun platform.
Easy to maintain as that was part of the design philosophy behind the plane.
Development took two years longer than it was supposed to though and by the time it was ready the Jet age had come about.

Removing Etching from a Marble Bathroom Countertop in Oxford
Earlier this year I was working on the restoration of a floor in Oxford and the client asked if I would look at the Marble Countertop in the bathroom. I often get asked to look at additional items whilst on site and always happy to see if I can help. Unfortunately, the stone had been cleaned with an unsuitable cleaning product (probably bleach based) and this had etched the surface leaving what appeared to be an unsightly splash mark ruining its appearance. You do have to be careful with household cleaning products around Marble, always read the label first and check to see if it is safe to use on natural stone before application. Many products are acidic and will etch into Marble as was the case here. I explained to the client what I could do, and she agreed to add the cost onto the quote for the floor I was already doing. I took photos but it is quite hard to see the damage on the images. My base in Chalgrove is only 11 miles outside of Oxford so it's not a problem to pop back and pick up some extra materials if I need them. In this case I was able to bring them along on day two of cleaning and sealing the floor. Polishing an Etched Marble Vanity Countertop The only way to restore a polished Marble surface like this is to use a set of diamond encrusted burnishing pads Read more at https://marble.tilecleaning.co.uk/removing-etching-from-a-marble-bathroom-countertop-in-oxford/
