Custom Canik Rival 

A short time ago, my wife and I attended the IV8888 shoot down in Georgia. One of the vendor booths set up was Century Arms. Of course they had a nice selection of Canik pistols among other firearms they either manufacture or import. My wife at the time was only a few weeks past major shoulder surgery on her left arm. She is right handed, so at least she still had use of her good arm. She is also a huge Canik fan. She’s owned a TP9SF pistol in FDE for quite a few years now. I wanted to see her reaction on the Canik Rival pistol since it ws their newest model and had quite a number of physical as well as appearance changes when compared to her TP9SF. She was shooting everything that day one handed and when she took some shots with the new Canik Rival, she was hitting a steel plate half way across the range with very little ease. 

After that event was over and with a very special birthday coming up in December, I saw an opportunity to do something special for her. I went over to Brownells and they happened to have Canik Rival pistols in black, in stock. I quickly ordered one up to my local FFL. Upon picking it up, I marveled at it’s beauty, but wanted it to be extra special for her. My wife’s favorite color is purple, but a solid purple pistol might be too much. I reached out to a company, fairly local to me, Weapon Works. I contracted them to do a black Multicam cerekote pattern with some purple accents added in. They quoted me 8 weeks to complete the project. About 4-5 week after I dropped it off, they were finished. Wow, what a quick turn around. M wife’s birthday was still 4-5 weeks away. So I took some really nice photos and put together a before/after video for my YouTube channel, then tucked it away until the big day.

Finally the day had come…it had been so hard keeping this pistol under wraps for such a long amount of time. I wrapped the pistol up in some foam, then placed it into the case. Put the case into a box and gift wrapped it. When she went to open the box, she saw that it was a pistol case and undoubtedly saw the Canik logo on the box. Once she pulled the foam off of the pistol…her first response was priceless… “Oh sh**” she exclaimed when she first put her eyes onto her new pistol. She was so surprised at what it looked like. I told her it was a one of a kind…no 2 Canik Rival pistols have that particular finish on it. I’m hoping that this doesn’t deter her from enjoying it and shooting it at the range. She is a very good shot…much better than I am at shooting handguns.

One of my hobbies is modifying rifles this is my vska trp limited edition 7.62x39 mm, it's pretty much a heavy duty AK-47 made by century arms. I know century arms doesn't have a good reputation but I been taking this beauty to the range alot and have had no issues with it at all its a well made rifle they did such a good job with it.

Best MP5 Clone?

There’s hardly a more recognizable modern firearm than the Heckler & Koch MP5 submachine gun. Between the countless movies, video games and actual conflicts…this thing has been there and done that. The HK MP5 is truly an iconic firearm if there has ever been one. Every single gun enthusiast wants one, even if they don’t admit it, including myself. What kept me away from owning one like most other people is the limited number of civilian versions (the SP5) that are available as well as the extremely high cost. These things can run $3k in some instances. People that want one, just pay it…so do your thing or get off the pot. Recently I saw one come in stock at Brownells. It was in stock no longer than 30 minutes at best. 

So with that out of the way, the title of this blog is the best MP5 clone. Almost 2 years ago I had the extreme want to pick up an MP5 or a clone to save some money. Brownells just happened to have the MKE AP-5 in stock. These clones are made over in Turkey and then imported by Century Arms. And while Century Arms and their manufactured items such as their AKs get a bad rap, the stuff they import from over seas generally can be very, very good. Not without exceptions of course. You see, this MP5 Clone manufactured by MKE Turkey is actually produced on HK machinery and is licensed by HK to do so. These are extremely close to the versions actually produced by HK in Germany. Probably the biggest difference would be the quality control done by the Turks versus the quality control done by the Germans. Let’s just ay that you have more chances of recognizing some fit and finish issues with the Turkish versions, however, they run an run very well. 

When my AP-5 came in, I jolted off to modify it in common ways. Of course I added a rail hand guard from Midwest Industries first off. I also added the Magpul grip model and safety selector. For the optic I chose to go with the Gen 2 Cyclops 1X prism optic from Primary Arms. The AP-5 comes with an integrated 3 lug barrel that is also threaded. I run my Rugged Obsidian 9MM suppressor exclusively on this firearm. Initially I had installed a side folding pistol brace from SB Tactical, but shortly after I filed a Form 1 to build it into a short barreled rifle. I’ve used both the Unity Tactical side folding stock and also the new Magpul sliding MP5 stock. Both are very good options. 

Out of the couple thousand rounds I’ve ran through this MP5 clone I have had exactly zero malfunctions of any type. It is by far the most requested firearm to take to the range for others to shoot. I may change out the trigger eventually for something a little crisper as the MP5 triggers are known to be quite mushy. I it an MP5? Well no, but it scratches that itch for someone that wants that look and feel, but can’ find one or doesn’t want to pay the premium. It is as good as you can get without actually being made by HK.

Some HK flavor with 5.56 sprinkles. . The HK53 clone was a Century Arms C-93P that had some work done to improve reliability by @dakotatactical but now looks and works like a dream. Joe does some stellar work and will always make sure his customer’s are happy. Great dudes over there. . The G36C clone is actually an all-USA clone. It’s the T36C by @tommybuilt.
