monologues unwelcome
For FFXIVWrite Day 5, “barbarous”. Majha & her co-WoLs, end of A Realm Reborn proper, spoilers thereby but also Prae is a meme, ~400 words. Hey I finally wrote something cheerful for this year! Some lines of dialogue…You May Recognize.
They’d left “smug” out of the briefings on the Garlean Empire.
“Your gods are no different from those of the beasts,” Gaius van Baelsar intones. “Eikons, every one.”
Thaliak bloody wept, the man likes the sound of his own voice. Majha crosses her arms and waits for him to finish. Chaanqa, less patient, whips another curl of energy at the magitek shield surrounding him, and then has to dodge when it bounces back at her.
“They are not!” Ta’rhiki tightens his hands around his jamadhars.
Van Baelsar ignores him. “Accept but this—”
“Besides,” Sonjha says with a frown, “some of the eikons are nice too.” He’s a summoner, so he’s biased, but Majha can’t say he doesn’t have a point. It’s not as if any of them have met the Warden herself, or ever will, but Majha likes to think that if they did she’d protect them as fiercely as Ifrit and Titan and Garuda have fought for their children.
“Accept but this,” van Baelsar says again, a little louder, “and you will—”
“The only thing I’ll accept is your unconditional surrender,” Majha says.
Even through the armor she can practically see smoke coming out of his ears. “Accept but this and you will see that Eorzea’s faith is bleeding the land dry.”
“Nah,” Chaanqa says. She casts Unmend again; again it sizzles and spatters off his shield. If Garlemald actually felt inclined to give these to common soldiers, for combat, instead of this one pompous windbag, for gratifying his ego, they’d be a lot more of a threat, though Majha supposes it might not let anything out either.
She wishes it didn’t let sound out.
“Nor is this unknown to your masters!” van Baelsar shouts, frazzled. “Which prompts the question—”
“I really don’t think it does,” Majha says.
Ta’rhiki is practically vibrating. “We don’t have masters, and our friends wouldn’t lie to us!”
The shield generator is inside the shield. Majha looks up, thoughtfully, at the ceiling.
“Your masters lack—wait.”
They are all treated to the sight of a Garlean legatus replaying his last few words in his head. “Which prompts the—argh. Damn it.”
The shield comes down in a sizzle of sparks, and this time Chaanqa’s Unmend hits him square in the chest. He lunges at her with a snarl, even as Ta’rhiki and Ifrit-egi both charge in.
Majha unfolds her arms, calls the wind, and then hits him in the mask with a rock. Satisfying.

consulting cats
For FFxivWrite2022 Day 21, “solution”. Majha & catsquad (several friends’ WoLs), post-A Realm Reborn, ~750 words. ARR Hildibrand quests spoilers; warning for…Ultros.
Hildibrand is not a good influence.
“No,” Majha says immediately as they leave Vesper Bay.
Ta’rhiki’s tail is all brushed up as he watches Maria, head drooping, lead the way. “No what?”
“No, you can’t ask her to join Ta Tribe.”
“I wasn’t going to!” Ta’rhiki protests. “…do you think she would if I asked in a couple of years?”
Majha looks at the girl and shrugs. It can be so hard to predict people.
Chaanqa asks, “Do you have a weird feeling about Greg?”
“I wasn’t really paying attention,” Majha admits. “Why, did you?”
“I don’t like him.”
It’s been a while since they actually had to fight anything, and it is a weird feeling. Majha doesn’t blame Chaanqa for being a little on edge. “Do you want to say something to…” Not to Hildibrand. “Ellie?”
Chaanqa checks the fastenings on her greatsword. “Nah. It’ll be fine.”
Well, if Chaanqa isn’t worried…
Okay, maybe Majha should have listened a little more carefully to Chaanqa.
“Your friend seems interested in Nashu,” Ellie says carefully.
Majha shades her eyes with her hand. “Who, Ta’rhiki? I think he’s just excited about learning how bombs work.”
“That’s not better!”
Sonjha gets kidnapped by the Mandragoras. When they find him, the Eggplant Knight and Onion Prince are fighting over him.
It doesn’t stop Majha from ripping the earth out from under their roots and withering their leaves, but it does mean she at least feels a little bad about it.
“We should join the tournament!” Ta’rhiki smacks his fist into his palm enthusiastically.
“Sounds good to me,” Chaanqa says.
Hildibrand is monologuing about fair damsels. Majha looks from him to Nashu to Avila, whose armor and muscles both gleam. That sword looks very sharp, and her shield is in good enough repair that Majha isn’t sure how much impact Ta’rhiki’s fists will make. “I’ll go with you.”
“Uh,” Briariden says, surprisingly discomfited. “Well. That’s convenient.”
There’s a startled little shriek from Sonjha. Majha already has her cane out as she turns around.
“Oops!” Ultros oozes. “So sorry!”
“Oh, that’s okay!” Sonjha beams down at him. “It didn’t feel bad, and you have an awful lot of tentacles, it must be hard to keep track of where they’re all going.”
Softly, through her teeth, Majha says, “Got any good recipes for octopus?”
“Lots.” Majha can hear the grin in Chaanqa’s voice. It isn’t a nice grin.
“Please, please!” Dour Meadow is looking at Chaanqa’s hand on her greatsword with a very reasonable amount of concern, all things considered. “I’m sure it was just an unfortunate accident. Your friend even said so himself! Let’s move along with your registrations, shall we?”
Chaanqa gets into an animated discussion with Julyan Manderville about the best smithy to get kitchen tools at, and even though it’s an emergency she looks so happy that Majha doesn’t like to interrupt.
Majha had liked Ellie, is the thing.
It isn’t that she’s willing to let Ellie or her sister get away with any of this, but…she’d liked her. They’d bonded, she’d thought, over how ridiculous the situations they kept ending up in were. Ellie rolled her eyes at Hildibrand and Nashu, but Majha had never thought she’d hurt them.
It’s not…fair. Solving cases with Hildibrand (or in spite of Hildibrand) had been such a welcome respite from war and primals. It wasn’t supposed to be like this.
“I think I can get her from here with a Repose,” Majha murmurs to Briariden. “Want me to try?”
He considers Ellie, the jewelry glittering on her, the boxes of death surrounding her. Majha is trying to make the same considerations, but she’s not as good at this sort of thing. “…Better not risk it.”
She couldn’t Esuna the stuff off of Hildibrand. She doesn’t know what to do.
“I know Nashu said he wasn’t a zombie,” Chaanqa mutters, as they clean up what’s left after Hildibrand led the Gentle Dead Men to their rescue, “but are we sure?”
Majha isn’t, but she doesn’t really care.
