Anti-suffragists in the US and the UK used cat imagery in their materials opposing the vote for women. By the 1910s, plenty of suffragists were turning it around and embracing the cat imagery themselves.

Simon, a ship's cat that served on HMS Amethyst. In April 1949, during the Chinese Civil War, the Amethyst was ordered to travel to Nanjing along the Yangtze River to relieve HMS Consort. However, before they could reach their destination, the People's Liberation Army opened fire on the Amethyst. By the time the shelling stopped, 22 men had been killed and Simon was seriously wounded. He was missing for several days before he was rushed to sick bay, and was not expected to last the night— but he survived.

(Simon aboard the Amethyst)
Simon subsequently became a celebrity thanks to press coverage and was awarded the PDSA's (People's Dispensary for Sick Animals) Dickin Medal, the only cat to ever do so. In a testimonial letter, the captain of the Amethyst wrote,
"Rats, which began to breed rapidly in the damaged portions of the ship, presented a real menace to the health of the ship’s company, but Simon nobly rose to the occasion and after two months the rats were much diminished. Throughout the incident Simon’s behaviour was of the highest order. One would not have expected a small cat to survive the blast from an explosion capable of making a hole over a foot in diameter in a steel plate. Yet after a few days Simon was as friendly as ever. His presence on the ship, together with Peggy, the dog, was a decided factor in maintaining the high level of morale of the ship’s company."
Unfortunately, Simon caught a virus, which was exacerbated by his war wounds. Despite medical treatment, Simon passed away on November 28th, 1949 at the age of 2.

This 14th century door at Exeter Cathedral, UK, is thought to be the oldest existing cat flap.
A cat was paid a penny each week, to keep down the rats and mice in the north tower, and a cat flap was cut into the door below the astronomical clock to allow the cat to carry out its duties.
Records of payments were entered in the Cathedral archives from 1305 to 1467, the penny a week being enough to buy food to supplement a heavy diet of rodents.

The International Workers of the World used the black cat (the sabo-tabby) as symbol for sabotage, slow downs, and striking on the job. "The softest paw can be a claw." Like in this illustration from 1913.
