do you make your bed? No lol I sleep in a nest of blankets

what's your favourite number? My "favorite" I guess is 7, but "my" number has always been 4 so that's what I (usually) pick for everything. Sending 4 emojis, picking the fourth thing, etc.

what is your job? I teach metalsmithing (jewelry, not blacksmithing)

If you could go back to school would you? (smiling through tears) I'm still there (college) but no. I have regarded school as the house of the devil and a factory of suffering for many years now. I'm just trying to get my degree so I can get better jobs lol

can you parallel park? No, I don't like cars or driving so I don't partake.

a job you had that would surprise people? Idk, I think many people are often surprised by my current job, but other than that I don't think there is one.

do you think aliens are real? Yeah in a sense, like it's more likely than not that other lifeforms exist in the universe. But I don't think any have come to earth sadly :(

can you drive a manual car? See above lol. But my mom wanted to teach me once

what's your guilty pleasure? I try not to be ashamed of things I like but one thing I regard as a guilty pleasure is like, sometimes I listen to music that I don't think is very good but it's catchy and I just like it. Usually it's like new pop hits and stuff. I don't consider it to be representative of what I listen to and I don't play it around other people lol but yeah

tattoos? Yep, I have two, both done by myself when I was fifteen LOL... But I've been thinking about doing another one because I had another idea and I don't have money ha ha ha....also I just like doing it I like doing art who woulda thunk

favourite colour? I feel obligated to say red (and its associates) here since it's literally the only color I wear that isn't black...but it's just because that's kind of my brand. I like most colors, it would be easier for me to say which colors I don't like.

favourite type of music? I like all kinds of music, but the categories the music I listen to the most fall into is like, rock/metal (stuff with really nice guitars and drums), folk/indie, and electronic. I like music with good lyrics, and if it doesn't have good lyrics it has to sound good to me.

do you like puzzles? Does anyone not??

any phobias? I don't think so, just icked out by normal stuff like mold and spiders and stuff sometimes.

favourite childhood sport? I didn't get to do sports when I was a kid, that's why I do them now B-)

do you talk to yourself? Nope, and for a long time I was convinced that talking to yourself was just something that was done in movies and TV to show what a character was thinking. I didn't believe anyone actually talked to themself in real life, when no one is around. I also didn't talk/narrate my play as a kid if I was alone because well...I know what's happening, I know what my toys are saying, why do I need to speak it out loud? But I narrate my actions when I'm around other people, that's separate.

what movie(s) do you adore? I really like Peking Opera Blues, it's probably my favorite movie of all time...or at least my favorite live action movie. Also I like JCSS (the 1973 film), and as for animation, all the Cartoon Saloon movies, but especially Secret of Kells which pretty much shaped me as a person and Wolfwalkers which I've always kind of wanted to do like, an essay on but never got around to.

coffee or tea? I drink tea the most, I really never drink coffee but I like the taste. Just, caffeine makes me really shaky and sweaty and doesn't actually make me feel more alert so the drawbacks are not worth it most of the time.

first thing you wanted to be growing up? When I was in preschool I said I wanted to be a firefighter but that wasn't something I held onto long term. I don't think I really had a childhood dream occupation.

Maybe this is me being pessimistic but holy shit I HOPE the live action movie isn’t BotW. You could give me the most charming, well designed and gorgeously adapted Prince Sidon, and I STILL don’t think it would be worth the absolute metric shit-ton of damage it would do to the Zelda fandom like the “BotW fans aren’t actually LoZ fans” effect we had when it first came out. I don’t mean to be mean but like the meme: I can’t do it. I’m not strong enough.

If this movie touches anything from the BotW/TotK continuity, I still hold fast to the only game being suitable for the setup we've gotten so far being Age of Calamity.

Other than that, it would have to be Skyward Sword or a movie-original plot.

...Although. If my back was put up against the wall and I had to make a live-action Zelda film (rather than just ANIMATING like literally EVERYONE is saying. Seriously, Ghibli and Cartoon Saloon are RIGHT THERE), I would base it off of Twilight Princess and have the directing be a split-job between Peter Jackson and Guillermo del Toro.

Animation throughout my life: a spotlight.

As someone who's giving their life into a career in animation, it shouldn't come as a surprise that I've had quite a history with the medium. Of course, as most, I grew up watching cartoons every day, and it'd be naive to think those childhood experiences haven't deeply shaped my thoughts on both the medium and art as a whole, as well as in life in general, as the emotional resonance and mood that animation can achieve are pretty much the main pieces that bind me to it as artistic impression. This being said, in my thinking for this post, I wanted to showcase works of art that have impacted me more recently, as a series of big and fast life changes have molded me into the person I am today, and I credit these pieces, among many others, for helping me hold everything together over my yet short stint in the field of adulthood. As per my usual, I've tried to spread myself evenly into one movie, one game and one show, for the sake of balance.

Song of the sea (Cartoon Saloon, 2014)

This masterwork film comes from a very small Irish animation collective, Cartoon Saloon, held up mostly by Irish government subsidies, as their works have garnered a bit of a reputation as preservation efforts for millenary pieces of traditional Celtic/Gaelic/Irish culture. This, however, is no edu-tainment snoozefest. The story of an older sibling coping with both the birth of a new sibling alongside a wave of loss is by no means a story never told. However, there is so much more here than what can be conveyed in an elevator pitch. Breathtaking animation that fits the emotional storytelling like a glove, a score that puts chills on chills and creative use of its setting form a piece of magical realism that moved me more than I can put to words. If you don't mind crying, give it a watch, I hope it gives you as much as it's given me.

Bee and Puppycat (Frederator/Cartoon Hangover, 2013)

The history of this show isn't anything short of bizarre. Released originally as a bit of a proto-web-animated series on the YouTube channel Cartoon Hangover and later released on the Nintendo 3DS' Nintendo Video, this loosely connected, hour long show/special tells a story equally as... avant garde? (Is it pretentious to use that term on Tumblr?) as its odd release strategy. Bee, a young adult struggling to keep a job and bouncing from place to place, bumps into a strange creature that looks kind of like a cat and a dog, smelling like the latter and having the ability to speak. Over the course of the show, they go on monster-of-the-week style (4-7 minute long!) episodes, all surrounding Bee, her closest friends and her own astranged relationship with her origins and her humanity. What can often feel like a high budget meme of a show ends up turning into a series of emotional meteorite strikes that will not hesitate to put you under. Definitely one of the best things you can watch on a 3DS.

GRIS (Nomada Studio, 2018)

This game is a bit of a no-brainer for this trio. Emotionally resonant arthouse style indie productions with a cutting edge plot line deeply hitting into a gutpunch climax are, well, my favorite genre of... things, really, and this is no exception. Fully hand-watercolored, GRIS tells the story of a girl who has to come to terms with the loss of a loved one, vagueness fully intended. Over the course of the game, you begin to unravel more of the stark emotional reality of what this loss has meant to the protagonist, and how difficult it can be to cope, as what brought solace has become dim, if not fully unattainable. This game has no dialogue, none of the characters have names and is a rather simple one-sitting puzzle platformer. On top of having one of the most touching plots in games I've ever played, this is a piece of art that knows what it is, recognizes it's limits and fully embraces them, utilizing it all to its major advantage.

Overall, while far from comprehensive, these are some of the pieces that have made a deep impact on me and have helped me understand both what I enjoy and what I personally aim to strive for in my artistic pursuits, and the past few years have been quite rich in both quantity and quality for me in that regard.

Cartoon Saloon made a whole movie with Sean Bean as a major character and managed to resist making this dumb joke. They must have the discipline and artistic integrity of saints.

Though they did give Bill Goodfellowe an arrow motif that amuses me just as much as this dumb meme does.

Can you list anything you unironically like in the games (and cartoons and comics) that you don't like?

I won't bother mentioning music, since that goes without saying and is to be expected for a Sonic game... unless you're Chronicles.

Sonic Adventure 2 (mixed gameplay-wise, annoying story-wise) - While I prefer Sonic's SA1 levels for a number of reasons, I still think his and Shadow's gameplay in SA2 is fun on its own merit. I also don't mind the treasure hunting gameplay returning or how big the levels are this time around, since Knuckles and Rouge are still fast and not '06 levels of slow. It's mainly the gimped radar that creates the unfortunate domino effect of making them a problem.

- Introduced Rouge, one of my favourite characters for how playful she is and how she's a lot more nuanced and intelligent than you'd expect.

- Some genuinely good scenes, like Eggman's trap on the A.R.K and Sonic escaping from the G.U.N. helicopter.

- Had some good ideas going for it, like the Pyramid Base and the Biolizard as a scientific monster instead of an ancient one.

- Despite my thoughts on the backstory itself (or rather, its execution), Shadow has enough depth and subtle qualities and occasional unintended hilarity to stand out from the typical dark rival characters you see in media.

- The Last Scene's music in particular is one of my favourite cutscene tracks in the series.

Sonic Heroes (mixed gameplay-wise, loathed story-wise) - The gameplay is fun when you're not being screwed over by repetitive combat, overly long levels and/or ice physics.

- Boasts some of the most consistently Genesis-worthy environments in the 3D games, up there with SA1's and Colours'.

- The in-game dialogue that isn't the same tutorial drivel repeated ad nauseam can be interesting, funny, etc.

- Reintroduced the Chaotix, which provided me with another character I quite like in the form of Vector.

- Bringing Metal Sonic back in full force and front and center in the plot after a long absence (not counting cameos and the like) is a perfectly fine idea. Just... not like this.

Sonic Battle (decent yet repetitive gameplay, mixed story-wise) - Emerl's arc is compelling, and it earns the emotional weight of having to put him down at the end.

- While some characters are iffy (read: Amy), other characters are extremely well-handled. Shadow is probably the prime example.

- Gamma's belly dance healing animation is fucking hilarious.

- When I was young, and the game was first announced, I was really excited about being able to play as Chaos. This proved to be my downfall when it turned out he was arguably one of the worst characters in the game due to being slower than me during the writing process, but I still recall that excitement fondly.

Shadow the Hedgehog (comedy classic) - The sheer amount of legendary stupidity this game has going for it makes it practically impossible to actually hate. It helps that it's not quite as white-knighted on the same level as '06... usually. You know you're in for a unique experience when you hear a gunshot every time you click something in the menu.

- By extension, Black Doom never gained an unironic fanbase like Mephiles/Scourge/Eggman Nega did, which means I'm a lot more willing to take Doom's dumbass brand of villainy in stride. He even has a unique design... a terrible one that rips off Wizeman granted, but alas, even that is a step-up from Fridge Shadow and Bumblebee Eggman.

- Despite being... well, Shadow the Hedgehog, some of the environments would fit right in with any other Sonic game, like with Circus Park, Lava Shelter, and Digital Circuit. Even the Black Comet levels look pretty cool.

- This game understands amnesia better than IDW does.

Sonic '06 (what do you think?) - The obvious one: Shadow's character was handled pretty well, even if it came at the cost of everyone else being a dummy and being forced to interact with Mephiles.

- Like SA2, there are some good moments, like the Last Story ending sequence with Sonic and Elise.

- In the greatest form of irony ever, I like Solaris as a concept and design(s), and its backstory has potential to serve as a parallel with Chaos without being a complete ripoff. Iblis sucks, Mephiles sucks, but I'm fine with Solaris.

- Introduced legendary characters like Sonic Man, Pele the Beloved Dog, Hatsun the Pigeon, and Pacha from The Emperor's New Groove.

The Rivals duology (apathetic outside of Nega-related grumbling) - There were some cool zone ideas in both games that were sadly let down by the restrictive and limiting gameplay. I particularly like Colosseum Highway for thus far being the only full-on Roman level in the series instead of merely having a couple minor hints of Roman, and Meteor Base for the unique scenario of the space station being built into an asteroid. These level concepts and others deserve a second chance IMO. (At least Frontier Canyon got a second chance in the form of Mirage Saloon, amirite?)

- Ifrit has a better design than Iblis. Not saying it's amazing, but the Firebird motif it has going on is a lot more interesting for a fire monster than the Not-Chaos schtick they had with Iblis.

Sonic and the Secret Rings (a very frustrating gaming experience) - Erazor Djinn, A.K.A. Qui-Gon Djinn, A.K.A. Dr. N. Djinn, A.K.A. I'll Take It On The Djinn, A.K.A. Not From The Hairs On My Djinny Djinn Djinn, is one of the best villains not associated with Eggman in the series. He's a Mephiles-type character done right, and there's actual weight and reason to his actions, however sinister or petty.

- I don't have strong opinions either way on Shahra as a character, but the Sonic/Shahra friendship is sweet and well-handled.

- The ending is one of Sonic's greatest moments. The sheer contrast between how ruthlessly he deals with Erazor and how comforting he is towards Shahra speaks volumes... Still gonna make fun of the mountain of handkerchiefs though. (Before anyone lectures me, I understand the significance of it and can even appreciate it from that angle... doesn't mean I'm not allowed to poke fun at it. :P)

- Another game with some redeeming environments. I love the aesthetic of Night Palace, and Sand Oasis looks gorgeous too.

Sonic Chronicles (my personal least favourite game in the series) - Uh...

- Um...

- Er...

- I like Shade's design?

Sonic Unleashed (overrated game and story IMO) - The obvious two: the opening sequence and the Egg Dragoon fight deserve all the praise they get.

- Seeing Eggmanland come to life was an impressive moment to be sure. While part of me does feel it didn't quite measure up to what I had in mind (ironically, the Interstellar Amusement Park ended up being closer to what I had in mind), it still looks badass and works well for what it is. I also don't mind the idea of it being a one-level gauntlet... key word being idea.

- Obviously, the game looks great. Not a fan of the real world focus (real world inspiration is fine, but copy-pasting the real world and shoving loops in it is just unimaginative), but it can't be denied that the environments look good.

- This game pulled off dialogue options a lot better than Chronicles did, since they didn't rely on making Sonic OoC.

Sonic and the Black Knight (just kind of boring all around) - Despite my gripes with the story (Merlina wasn't nearly as fleshed out as her unique anti-villain status deserved, which ends up severely undermining the ambition of the plot in more ways than one, and the other characters go from being useless yes men for King Arthur to being useless yes men for Sonic), I will admit it provides interesting insight into Sonic's character.

- Like '06 and Secret Rings, the ending is very nice... well, aside from Amy being an unreasonable bitch ala Sonic X at the very end.

Sonic the Hedgehog 4 (apathetic) - The admittedly few new concepts sprinkled within had promise. They may not have been as fleshed out as they could have been, but level concepts like Sylvania Castle and White Park, bosses like Egg Serpentleaf and the Egg Heart, and story beats like the Death Egg mk.II being powered by Little Planet, all could have been brilliant had they been better executed.

SatAM (apathetic outside of SatAM Robotnik-related grumbling) - I'm not a fan of the environments on the whole due to them looking too bland or samey, but there are some exceptions that look pleasant or interesting, like the Void.

Sonic Underground (apathetic) - The character designs make me feel better about myself.

- Does "large quantities of unintentional meme material" count as a positive?

Sonic X (mostly apathetic outside of Eggman's handling) - Helen was a better human character and audience surrogate in her one focus episode than Chris was throughout his entire runtime.

- Actually, most of the human characters not named Chris were legitimately likable. Including everyone in Chris' own family not named Chris. Hilarious.

- Despite arguably having the most Chris in it, I actually don't mind the first season that much, partly due to slight nostalgia from seeing it on TV when it was new, but mostly because Eggman actually acted like a villain for the most part, and certain other characters weren't quite as flanderized yet. It's season 2 and onwards where things started going off the rails IMO. (Incidentally, Helen's episode was part of season 1...)

The Boom franchise (apathetic) - Along with Chronicles, the games provide yet more proof that just because someone isn't SEGA/Sonic Team, that doesn't mean they're automatically more qualified to handle the series.

- The show had some good episodes here and there, and Tails' characterization was probably the most consistently on-point out of the cast.

- Despite not exactly being favourite portrayals for either character, even I'll admit that many of Knuckles and Eggman's lines in the show on their own were genuinely funny.

Archie Sonic (pre-reboot is mostly terrible, post-reboot is mostly... bland) - Whenever I doubt myself as a writer, I think back to Ken Penders, and suddenly I'm filled with a lot more confidence.

Sonic the Comic (apathetic) - Fleetway isn't a comic I tend to recall much of aside from how much of a loathesome cunt Sonic is, but IIRC, Robotnik's portrayal is pretty good. Different, but good.

IDW Sonic (stop pissing me off, comic) - Putting their handling aside (and being too obviously "inspired" by MGS in the latter's case), Tangle and Whisper are good characters IMO.

- Same goes for Starline, before he was killed off-screen and replaced with Toothpaste Snively.

- Execution aside (noticing a pattern?), the zombot virus was a fine concept on its own and an interesting new scheme for Eggman.

- I get to remind myself that I've never drawn scat edits and posted them publicly on Twitter.

Comforting Things for Bad Days

I made this list for myself, but I figured I'd share it in case anyone else may need it. It's just a simple guide of things that help when I'm upset, so if it helps you as well, I'm glad. Godspeed, everyone

🍜 Cooking food!! I was having a really shitty day awhile back, just feeling incredibly exhausted, and even after a nap it didn't seem to be getting much better. But then I made myself some Ramen and I just felt so much nicer than before. Even just boiling some water to get it started felt so fulfilling. Food is such a soulful thing, it never fails to make me feel better, especially if it's handmade. So go pick up some cucumber and slice it into bits, then throw together a salad while you’re at it! It’ll nourish your stomach and your soul. This also applies to baking too, of course! Some banana bread or brownies sure do sound good right now!

☕ Make yourself some tea. I find that Raspberry Tea is a personal favorite of mine, so I always make some when I really need it. Warm drinks in general are proven to make a person feel warmer and more pleasant too, so hot chocolate or whatever floats your boat is probably fine too. And, of course, you can never go wrong with water. It’s the only drink that can make you feel significantly better after one sip, so pour yourself a cool glass and enjoy.

🐉 Watch some really nice Animation. Like Studio Ghibli, or Moomins, or Cartoon Saloon. Or even something like Loving Vincent if you're in the artsy, melancholic mood for it. Rewatch Spirited Away or The Cat Returns while you’re at it! I don't really have a super solid explanation for this one, except that Animation makes me happy. It inspires me. So it should be a good and kind friend in those darker moments too!

🕹️ Play some video games! Much like Animation, I love me some video games, so when I'm feeling up to it they can be a good stress relief when needed. I find that Zelda games, Kirby's epic yarn, and other games like Undertale are especially good for this. Try and pick something that's not too high-octane action. Well, unless you're mad and need to take it out on some Bokoblins, of course. Then that is perfectly acceptable. As long as it helps you, you’re doing just fine.

🧵 Re-experience some old things you used to love! Visit that Japanese Market you used to love as a kid, or pull out your old stuffed animal and cuddle with them again. Research Diplodocus like you used to as a kid, watch Peter Pan again, and accept all the emotions and nostalgia that comes with seeing these things with new eyes. Don't judge if you get a bit teary eyed, that's normal. Feed your inner child for once, they've been getting awfully hungry lately.

📕 Sit down and read. Like actually, genuinely read. Modern life always seems so fast paced and crazy, it can be hard to remember the quieter moments in there too. Reading helps us remember them. Pick up that Encyclopedia of Spirits tome you got forever ago, or one of those Art and Concept books that you love so much. It'll nourish your soul, I promise.

🕰️ Take a Nap!! Exhaustion kills, quite literally in fact. So just curl up somewhere, and doze off. Set a timer for a twenty minute power nap, or sleep for 5 hours on a Thursday afternoon! There are no rules for how much sleep you're "allowed" to get, so if your body needs it, do it!

🧹 Clean!! When you’ve got the energy for it, cleaning is a great way to clear both your room and your mind. Break it down into steps. Start with a very small section of your space and clean it thoroughly, then move on to the next. You’ll have the whole room done before you know it! A messy room may be fun, but it also creates a chaotic energy that can throw you off, so it’s good to go through and organize every once in a while to clean the space and the energy there.

🌾 Nature! For the love of god, just go outside. It doesn’t matter where it is, as long as there’s grass and trees and greenery, you’re in the right place. There’s a reason why Houseplants are so important to people; Humans need that greenery for both our physical and mental health. Go listen to the birds, take a walk that leads to nowhere, go water some plants and trees while you’re at it! Take care of the world, and it’ll care for you back. Hell, you can even build a little shrine to some nature spirits or a tree, and start leaving offerings there! Take care of your life in the most literal sense! Home is where the heart is, after all.

✏️ Draw! Something, anything, when it’s in your head, draw it out! Or look back at your old drawings and admire them sometimes. Like that drawing of Princess Peach in the heart-shaped glasses, or that Capybara eating ramen that you made a while ago. Remember how much fun you had making those? Remember the pencil lead stains on the side of your hand? Let the emotions of that drawing come back and fill you up again. Let them comfort you, feel them, and then let them go. Drawing is nourishment for the heart, so it’s important to do sometimes.

💕 Be kind and do nice things for others. Write a letter or send an email to someone you haven’t seen in forever! Give someone a compliment and strike up a friendly conversation! Make something or do a chore or errand for the ones you love! Humans are sociable creatures by nature, that’s pretty much the only reason we’ve survived this long, so give in to your compassion and do nice things! By helping others, you’ll help yourself even more.

🧼 Take a Bath or Shower! Go all fancy with it too! I’m talking your favorite playlist, some candles if it’s dark enough, maybe some bubbles or an open window to smell the fresh breeze. Really get into it, but make sure nobody’s washing dishes or anything, so you can have all that nice, hot water to yourself. Getting clean and feeling clean will help cleanse your soul as well! Oh, and make sure to pick out new clothes afterwards. You’ve probably been wearing those for awhile now, plus new clothes help drive home the cleansing feeling that comes with a bath.

⛲ Pick or schedule something to look forward to! Take a small trip to somewhere you really wanna visit, or go swimming for a bit after work! Even if it’s just something small like a nap or a meal you’re really excited for, try and find motivation to get you through until then. Having something to look forward to makes the day more bearable, so try and find something like that everyday!

📬 Make something! Put together a recommendations list of all your favorite things, with short notes about why you like them, and why others should enjoy them too. Make some memes about something you really like, or an idea that’s been stuck in your head for forever. Pick up a hobby like animation, so you can finally see your own drawings come to life, like you’ve always dreamed! A pen can’t win a battle, but the sword can’t heal the heart.

🍶 Start a Collection! Choose an item you really like, and start trying to find them everywhere you go. It helps make trips more meaningful when you’re actually looking for something at those gift shops. How about a collection of Witchy-themed Books, or Letters and Notes from meaningful people? That sounds so nice, doesn’t it?
