Chocolate Cake with Chocolate Orange Buttercream
I am back! It’s been a very long hiatus but I’ve still been trying out recipes and cooking foods mentioned in the Simon Snow Series!
Today seemed a particularly good day to post, as Carry On Countdown is going on and today’s prompt is CAKE!!
This cake comes from chapter 89 of Any Way the Wind Blows and is courtesy of Lady Ruth Salisbury, of course.
“There’s chocolate cake with chocolate-orange butter cream.” (Simon POV, Ch 89, Any Way the Wind Blows, by Rainbow Rowell.)
I’ve made this cake a few times now. The family seems to love it for birthdays. It’s very rich, very dense and very good.
Chocolate Cake with Chocolate-Orange Buttercream
Ingredients
Cake:
1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 3/4 cups sugar
1 cup unsweetened cocoa
1 1/2 tsp baking soda
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
2 eggs
1/2 cup of canola oil
1 cup milk (I used lactose free)
1 tsp vanilla
1/2 cup boiling water
1/4 cup orange juice (which I forgot to include in the picture)
Buttercream:
8 oz bittersweet chocolate, chopped, or 8 oz bittersweet chocolate chips
1 stick unsalted butter, at room temperature
6 oz shortening ( or more butter if you prefer, I used vegetable shortening) also at room temperature
3-4 cups powdered/ confectioner’s sugar
1/2 cup orange juice
1 tsp orange zest
1 tbsp cornstarch
Method
Cake:
Preheat the oven to 350F.
Grease two 8-inch cake pans and line with parchment paper.
Whisk the sugar, flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in one large bowl.
Gently whisk the eggs in a separate bowl until yolks and whites are combined then add oil, milk, and vanilla then mix well. Save the boiling water and orange juice for a bit later.
Add the egg/milk/oil mixture to the dry ingredients and mix.
Then add the boiling water and orange juice to the mixture.
Divide the batter evenly between the two cake pans.
Bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until center set and toothpick inserted comes out clean.
Remove from oven and allow to cool on wire rack.
Buttercream:
Melt the chocolate in a double boiler and allow to cool slightly
Whip the butter and the shortening until creamy
add orange juice and orange zest, mixing well
add 3 cups of powdered sugar, one at a time.
add cornstarch
add melted chocolate
add up to one more cup powdered sugar, to reach desired consistency (the first time I made it I ended up with the entire extra cup, last time I used 3/4)
if it feels too thick you may add a tablespoon more of orange juice
Place one of the cakes on a plate and cover top with buttercream. Gently place the second cake on top of the first and apply the buttercream liberally over the top and sides of cake. Slice and serve.
Enjoy!

Everything you need to know about the Lady Ruth's Recipes charity zine:
What is it?
It's a Carry On themed charity zine supporting Planned Parenthood! There are over 20 recipes (submitted by people within the fandom) and each recipe is accompanied with either a fic or a piece of art (and sometimes both!) that features the food from the recipe. It will be available in digital form only.
The stories and art cover a wide range of characters and relationships from the Carry On universe. And the entirety of the content is rated G or T.
When does it come out?
The zine will come out on December 1st, 2023. Pre-orders will be open from now until the release date. The zine will also be available for 4 weeks after that date. After December 31st we will no longer be fulfilling orders, so if you want a copy, get it before it's gone!
How do I order a copy?
We're asking people to make their donations directly to Planned Parenthood (or your country's equivalent for reproductive care services, if that is easier). After doing so, send a screenshot with proof of your donation to
[email protected] and your pre-order will be submitted! A minimum donation of $20 USD is required, but you are welcome to donate more. The minimum donation is $10 for the final 2 days of December! If you are buying copies for more than just yourself, please note that in your email and list out the extra email addresses that those copies should be sent to.
Who contributed to the zine?
We have many contributors that made this whole project possible! We'll be teasing everyone's work in the weeks leading up to the release of the zine, but here's the big list of everyone involved!

Went for a walk in the park this morning! Decided to go a different way than usual (usually I go to this really foresty part and just wander amongst the trees, but this time I figured I'd shake it up) which was kind of a bad idea bc the sun was in my eyes almost the whole time, but I also ended up walking a lot further from the parking lot than usual!
Discovered the memorial forest I always see while driving but haven't actually been in. Apparently there's a tree there for my mom's friend who died of cancer a long time ago, but I don't know her full name so I couldn't find her on the memorial.
Saw some gorgeous fall colours on the way back! And then I couldn't figure out which way to go so I passed this couple with a rowdy dog (they were trying to teach it not to react to pedestrians but it was clearly still learning lol) and went up a hill....and discovered that was the wrong way to go, but didn't want to trouble the couple again so instead of going back down the hill I decided to take this extremely sketchy bike path instead:
My calves are not happy but I didn't fall on my ass so that's a victory!
Then the path disappeared and I was basically stuck on the wrong side of the river. At least I found some pretty moss and a wasp nest (?)
Eventually I realized I was on the opposite side of the river I always walk past when I go through the foresty part of the park, have always wondered what was on the other side lmao. The answer is a dead-end probably decommissioned bike path and some very thick underbrush (will have to do a really thorough tick check). Couldn't find a bridge (and didn't want to crash through the brush any more than I had to) so I found this improvised stepping stone path and somehow made it across without dunking myself:
Annnnd eventually made it back to the parking lot!
Can't believe I walked that far in like an hour round-trip, if I walked along the proper sidewalks it would take over an hour. Apparently Fish Creek Park is the secret shortcut to cover large distances through the city lmao.
