So many great cars over the years. We certainly wish we can keep them all! However, we always get asked “which is the one you regret selling?” This one always comes to mind first! Oh my god there’s a monte cristo blog,I can ramble to someone about how cad man could have had an ok life IF HE HADNT STABBITY STABBED THE LIFE OUT OF HIS WIFE
Welcome to the blog ;)) we're a bunch of nerds.
I mean I hate Caderousse with every fiber of my being and I don't condone murder but you gotta admit that la Carconte wasn't that much better than him tbh
i honestly feel like caderousse is a much more complex and tragic character than people give him credit for. like yes, he’s a greedy little bastard man but that’s a pretty shallow evaluation.
on one level, caderousse is just the kind of person who is very apt to self-blame while also being entirely convinced that he deserves better. caderousse will say “it’s my fault edmond dantès was arrested because i’m a weak coward” and “i’m only miserable because life itself has wronged me” in the same breath and mean both of them. for someone who is pretty hyper aware of his faults, he seems to consider himself a good person.
more than that, though, what i find most interesting is caderousse’s biggest fault. he’s greedy, of course, and extremely envious, but i think most importantly he is just ridiculously dependent on others and has awful character judgement. he’s only pulled into the dantès conspiracy because he’s desperately sucking up to danglars, presumably just because he likes the guy a lot — “the guy” being possibly the most wholly irredeemable character in the book. in the same vein, the only reason he doesn’t catch wind sooner about what’s going on is that danglars repeatedly reassures him that everything’s fine, and it’s also danglars’ influence that stops him from going to the authorities to try to help dantès once things come to a head. and then, of course, danglars leaves the country and cuts off contact with everyone from marseille. i think it’s interesting that caderousse’s spiral into the destitute state we see him in after the time skip is started not just by dantès’ arrest, but by his abandonment by the more successful danglars.
then, when he murders the jeweler, he only does so because la carconte pressures him into it, and he’s presumably so distressed that he retaliates by killing her, too. later, we see him very clearly using benedetto as a crutch. of course, he pretty openly loathes la carconte, and his relationship with benedetto is mostly pragmatic even if i think it’s clear that he cares about him on some level, but the point remains that caderousse always seeks out someone to rely on, and without fail that person either negatively influences him or feeds into his worse tendencies… although benedetto is pretty thoroughly tired of him by the time they interact in front of us. notably, la carconte and benedetto are some of the most unambiguously awful characters in the book, right up there with the banker himself. fernand and especially villefort have more moments of humanity, despite their villainy, and héloïse is a whole other can of worms.
and, in typical count of monte cristo style, it all ties up very poetically. caderousse’s death is important to the plot primarily because it leads to benedetto’s arrest, which plays a pivotal part in both villefort’s and danglars’ downfalls. he allowed himself to be a tool for others in life, so that is what he serves as in death, too.
