Your Guide to Choosing the Right Carbon Monoxide Detector for Your Home
Tumblr media
Having a functioning carbon monoxide detector is vital in detecting the presence of the colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas in your home. Carbon monoxide is produced by the burning of fuels like coal, wood, propane, and natural gas, and exposure to it can lead to serious health issues and even death. It is therefore important to make an informed decision when choosing the right carbon monoxide detector for your home. With the right detector, you can have peace of mind knowing that you and your family are protected against carbon monoxide poisoning. 3 Americans found dead at Airbnb in Mexico on trip to celebrate Day of the Dead, officials & family say Relatives said Kandace Florence, 28, had been staying in Mexico City with high school friend Jordan Marshall, 28, and Marshall’s friend Courtez Hall. Three Americans were found dead at an Airbnb in Mexico City for a trip to celebrate the Day of the Dead, authorities and family said Wednesday. Kandace Florence, 28, of Virginia Beach, Virginia, was staying with high school friend Jordan Marshall, 28, also of Virginia Beach, along with Marshall's friend Courtez Hall, relatives told NBC News and NBC affiliate WAVY of Portsmouth, Virginia. Investigators believe the trio died from carbon monoxide poisoning, Mexico City prosecutors said. Marshall, a 12th grade English teacher at Rosenwald Collegiate High School in New Orleans, loved to travel, said his mother, Jennifer Marshall. “In his short 28 years, we can draw comfort from the fact he did travel and he did live a very, very full life,” she said Wednesday. The trio had been in the city to mark Día de los Muertos, a celebration traditionally held on Nov. 1 and 2 to honor the dead, their relatives have said. Florence told her boyfriend by phone Oct. 30 that she wasn't feeling well, WAVY reported. At some point, the call dropped and Florence's boyfriend was unable to reach her again, so he contacted the Airbnb host and asked for a checkup on the group, the station reported. Authorities found all three dead, WAVY reported. An official cause of death is under investigation. The #Mexico City attorney general’s office did not immediately respond to a request for an update. The State Department confirmed the deaths. "We are closely monitoring local authorities’ investigation into the cause of death. We stand ready to provide all appropriate consular assistance," it said in a statement. #Airbnb said it has suspended the listing and canceled coming reservations as it investigates. It said it has been in touch with the Airbnb host & is providing support. It said it was also in touch with the U.S. Embassy. "Our priority right now is supporting those impacted as the authorities investigate what happened. #carbonmonoxide https://www.instagram.com/p/CkxxiE7uduG/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Pulse oximetry is an unreliable method to test for carbon monoxide poisoning
Tumblr media
Pulse oximetry is an unreliable method to test for carbon monoxide poisoning. Pulse oximetry is an unreliable method for spotting people suffering with carbon monoxide poisoning and it should not be used for this purpose, according to a systematic review and meta-analysis presented today (Tuesday, Oct. 18) at the European Emergency Medicine Congress. Carbon monoxide is one of the most common causes of poisoning death in the world. It can be successfully treated with oxygen. However, carbon monoxide poisoning can be difficult to diagnose because its symptoms are similar to common infections such as flu. Researchers say more work is now needed to find a quick and effective method for diagnosing carbon monoxide poisoning. Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that can be produced when fuels burn in a poorly ventilated space, for example in a faulty or poorly maintained boiler or gas cooker. When people are exposed to carbon monoxide, it enters their bloodstream via the lungs. Carbon monoxide attaches to hemoglobin—the molecule that normally transports oxygen around the body and this can result in the body being starved of oxygen. Carbon monoxide poisoning can be detected with a blood test that measures the proportion of hemoglobin that is bound to carbon monoxide. The new findings were presented by Dr. Mathilde Papin from the emergency department at Nantes University Hospital in France. She said, "If we suspect carbon monoxide poisoning, we want to be able to treat patients quickly with oxygen in the ambulance or in the emergency room, and that means we need a test that can be done immediately onsite. A blood test is reliable, but not practical." Pulse oximetry is a quick and easy test where a monitor, usually placed on the fingertip, can measure a patient's pulse and gauge the proportion of their blood that is loaded with oxygen (called oxygen saturation). It is used to monitor patients with lung conditions such as asthma or chest infections. A lower level of oxygen saturation might also indicate that a patient has been exposed to carbon dioxide, which is displacing the oxygen in their blood. However, Dr. Papin added, "The use of pulse oximetry to check for carbon monoxide poisoning in research and in clinical practice has given mixed results." To gain a clearer picture, Dr. Papin and her colleagues conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis. They searched for all previous medical trials that compared pulse oximetry with blood tests in patients or healthy volunteers, including adults and children, and found 19 such studies. The researchers were able to combine the results from 11 of the studies, including data on more than 2,000 people, to compare the accuracy of the two testing approaches. "After systematically assessing all the available evidence on the topic, this research team suggests that using pulse oximetry as a tool for diagnosing carbon monoxide poisoning is not a reliable method for this purpose. Other screening methods need to be developed and evaluated, and in the meantime, we must rely on a combination of symptoms, evaluating the likelihood of exposure to carbon monoxide and blood tests."Professor Youri Yordanov from the St Antoine Hospital emergency department, APHP Paris, France, is Chair of the EUSEM 2022 abstract committee and was not involved in the research says. Obsessed with the fact that a fire turns infinitely more toxic when you don't just... let it burn with sufficient oxygen supply. CO gas is a lethal bitch and not poetic at all but my weird little mind finds it fascinating that the obsession with preventing fires can indirectly make it worse when it does happen.

Welcome to Similar Blog Showdown!!
With so many different blogs out there, it's inevitable that 2(or more) will have similar/the same gimmicks. But, who does it better?
That's what we're here to find out! I'll be posting a poll once a week comparing a group of similar blogs. The winner will be the "real one" and the others will be deemed the copies/clones.
Not sure when I'll be starting this, but I've had this idea for a while now.
No longer taking poll suggestions, but blogs that fall into the polls already listed will still be added. Propaganda still appreciated.
