Title: Just Trouble Fandom: Pillars of Eternity Rating: G Status: One-Shot Characters: Original Character (Makali), Captain Aeldys Ships: F!OC/Captain Aeldys Additional Notes: TTRPG Character, OC Backstory, Flirting with Pirates Word Count: 1300 Summary: While at Fort Deadlight, Makali runs into an old flame. Between the rum on her lips and those taunting eyes, she just might give in to the temptation she brings.
read below or here on AO3
It’s already a rowdy night at the Deadlight Court by the time Makali swaggers in through the doors.
Yes, it's true that most nights on Fort Deadlight could easily be called rowdy- the combination of booze and bawdy music and bands of pirates will do that- but tonight, there’s something extra to the revelry in the air, and Makali senses it instantly. Cheerful shouts greet her as she steps inside, and she grins back at the familiar faces in the room as she makes her way to the bar. The music filling the room is familiar as well, and she hums along, her smile growing as she finally recognizes the reason for the raucous atmosphere. She glances to the corner of the tavern and sure enough, Benweth is seated at the harpsichord, belting out a drinking song with his crewmates, all of them already deep in their cups.
How’s that for a stroke of good fortune?
Makali orders herself a rum, then turns to scan the room. Benweth’s presence is a welcome surprise, though not really for his own sake. He does play a good tune, but Makali is far more interested in the company he likely arrived with.
And…ah, there she is, leaning against the wall on the opposite side of the room, her mismatched eyes already fixed on Makali and a coy smile on her lips. Makali returns the smile with one of her own, tosses her long braid over her shoulder, and ambles over to the pirate lass she knows so well.
“Been a while, Sea Wolf.”
Aeldys laughs at the address, loud and brash as always. “You’re one to talk. Can’t even remember the last time you graced Deadlight with your presence.” She raises her own mug of rum and jauntily taps it against Makali’s in greeting. “Where the blazes have you been?”
Makali shrugs and leans against the wall next to Aeldys, smiling down at her as she knocks back her rum. “Where else? You know I can’t stay landlocked for long. Not as if you’re much different.”
“Aye,” Aeldys allows, tipping her head in acknowledgement. Her eyes- one icy blue, the other pitch black, both rich with mischief- flicker up to Makali. “But I still find time to check in at Deadlight every now and again. It’s just decent manners, lovesome.”
Makali barks a laugh and edges closer to nudge Aeldys’s shoulder with her own. “When have either of us ever been decent?”
“Ha! I did miss having you around.” Aeldys chuckles into her drink, her gaze roving over Makali in thoughtful appraisal. “You ever think of joining up with my crew again?”
“Sorry, Sea Wolf, but I’m on the Lady Luck now.”
“Any chance of jumping ship?”
“Aw, you know I can’t just up and leave a girl out in the cold like that,” Makali answers with determined casualty. Maybe she should have expected this question; she and Aeldys do make quite the team whenever their courses cross. They’re both bold, fierce, unpredictable- it’s what makes them both such damn good pirates, after all. It’s also the same thing that leads most of their affairs, fun as they are, to go up in flames. “Besides, the last time we worked together, I don’t remember it ending all that great.”
“Ah, you’re not still salty about that, are you, lovesome?” Aeldys waves a hand in the air with a shrug. “That was nothing. And besides, the things I could promise you this time around are well worth the trouble.”
“Sounds promising,” Makali admits. “Also sounds familiar. Last time, your trouble cost me half a ship and wasn’t worth a handful of gold.”
“But wasn’t it fun?” Aeldys prompts, taking a step closer. For a moment, everything else in the tavern- the shouting pirates, the bellowing music, the smell of rum- is drowned out by the look she gives Makali, a look that sends a thrilling jolt all the way down Makali's spine.
Gods help her, Makali did always love those eyes of hers.
“Yeah,” she says, brushing a hand through Aeldys’s dark hair and letting her fingers linger on the edge of her jaw. “I do remember the fun.”
“And don’t you trust me?”
Not in the slightest, Makali thinks, and she knows Aeldys knows that. But Aeldys’s smirk promises excitement, and Makali is horribly tempted by that prospect. She knows Aeldys knows that, too.
“I got plans, lovesome,” Aeldys says, her voice going low, barely audible over their surroundings. “Can’t spill ‘em all yet, but big things are coming my way. I need people on my side, capable people. I know we’ve had our ups and downs, but you’re capable. It’s a rare fleet that can boast their very own renegade watershaper.”
And there goes the mood. Makali frowns and pulls away slightly. “I’m not a watershaper. You know that.”
“Point is, I could use you. You’d get your own rewards, and it’d be a good time to boot.” Aeldys doesn’t even seem to notice she’s poked a wound; or, more likely, she just doesn’t care. It’s one of the things which makes her so hard to be around, that callousness. But it’s also one of the things that makes her easy- there’s no fussing, no overthinking, just the next thing on the horizon.
It’s the only thing that makes Makali relax just a little more and ask, “Just what would this good time involve?”
Aeldys grins wickedly. “I’m sure you could come up with some ideas, lovesome. And in addition to whatever you’re thinking of in that pretty head of yours, I’d be making some real moves in the Council. You could be my right hand, and you’d be raking in some real loot.”
Ah. The Council. Whatever Aeldys promises, there’s no smirk charming enough and no promise enticing enough for Makali to get involved in that mess. “Flattering offer, but you know I didn’t come all the way out here just to get involved in politics.”
Aeldys huffs. “You sure? If you say no, I’ll be stuck with this clown.” She nods her head towards Benweth, still showboating on his harpsichord.
Makali watches him for a short while, humming along to his tune. There’s a part of her that does want to jump in and take his place, though she can’t say whether it’s because she wants the rewards or the challenge or just Aeldys. But Makali has very, very few rules in life, and this is one of them.
“I’m here for adventure and gold,” she says, and takes another swig of rum. “Not a knife in my back in some council room.”
Makali is half-convinced Aeldys will do nothing but pester her about this for the rest of the night, but the other woman seems to accept her answer. She still pouts of course, huffing and reaching out to flick Makali’s braid in a petulant manner. “Pity. We could have really had some fun together.”
Makali raises an eyebrow, and she moves to face Aeldys fully. Aeldys grins and digs her fingers into the front of Makali's vest to tug her closer, leaning herself back against the wall as her eyes roam up Makali’s body. Makali has never regretted that fact that she easily towers over Aeldys’s elven frame, but she always feels especially grateful for her stature when under the pirate’s appreciative gaze.
“Well,” Makali says slowly, “just because I’m not sticking around for long, doesn’t mean we can’t have a bit of fun tonight.”
Aeldys’s smirk grows, and her free hand curls around the back of Makali's neck, pulling her lower until their faces are level. “And here I thought you didn’t trust me.”
Makali tilts her head, an eyebrow raised as she hovers just beyond Aeldys’s lips. “Do I need to?”
“Maybe it’s more fun if you don’t.” Aeldys leans forward and closes the distance between them. Her mouth is rough and warm, and the taste of rum lingers on Makali’s lips after she pulls away. “Gotta keep you on your toes, lovesome.”

OK I'm gonna have to throw you some Hazel questions! :-D #2, 6, 7, 10?
Hazel has not actually gotten to Deadfire yet, so this is me forward projecting, but I’ve still spent a lot of time thinking about it, lol.
2. Did they have a favourite location?
Neketaka. It’s the center of everything in the Deadfire and filled with so many interesting people and locations.
6. What was your Watcher’s ship(’s) name(s)? Did they enjoy being Captain of a boat? Would they rather have been back at Caed Nua?
...I feel like I had an idea of what Hazel would name her ship but I do not remember it in the slightest. She in general is very upset that Caed Nua got destroyed and she’s back in the Deadfire, but she actually really enjoys the adventure of sailing around. She wanted to settle down more for the sake of giving her siblings a stable life more so than that she actually wanted a stable life. She does question if it’s the best environment for Vela, though.
7. Did they have a favourite quest or side quest? How about a least favourite?
The Príncipi questline to acquire the ghost ship is her favorite. Basically everything about the VTC pisses her off, though.
10. Where do you imagine your Watcher’s life takes them after the events of Deadfire?
So Hazel sides with the Príncipi, but my headcanon is that she overthrows both Furrante and Aeldys and takes command herself. So she sticks around the Deadfire, relocatimg the Príncipi to Ukaizo and throws resources into trying to study the Wheel and fix the problem while also leading a pirate fleet. Hyacinth sticks around to do research on the Wheel, Honeysuckle returns to traveling around, Heather is still traveling around with Hiravias, and Hollis is still with Dunryd Row in Defiance Bay. (Heather and Hollis didn’t actually join in for the events of Deadfire).

1, 3, and 5 for the Watcher asks!
Deadfire Ask Meme
1. What did your Watcher make of the Deadfire Archipelago? Was it their first time there, or had they been there previously?
Despite travelling a lot, Catriona hadn't visited the Deadfire before waking up after the destruction of Caed Nua! She really enjoyed visiting a new place and meeting all the different types of people that live there. By the end of it she was absolutely tired of the politics, though, and she was happy to leave it all behind her.
3. How about a favourite companion? Or a favourite NPC?
Catriona is the type of person who will get along with anyone. She makes fast friends and just genuinely enjoys hearing about people's different life stories, so she couldn't choose just one favorite really. That being said, she and Edér have been good friends ever since they met. Rekke also became a quick favorite of hers, she loved his humor and really wanted to help him learn to speak Aedyran so they could communicate better! (I'm not counting Aloth for this because she ended up with him, which would've immediately made him the favorite lmao.)
For NPCs, and this might just be my own bias here, but the first person to pop to mind was Captain Aeldys. She was just a really interesting character all around, and while Catriona didn't always agree with the way she did things, she liked her.
5. Was your Watcher glad to have Eder, Aloth and Pallegina back again (if indeed they did)? Was there any other companion that they would have liked to have back in their party?
Oh, absolutely! She was especially glad to see Aloth, as they hadn't had much time to see or even talk to each other while they were both busy with their responsibilities. She and Eder had seen each other from time to time, with him coming to visit at Caed Nua to help break up some of the monotony of it, but being out on the road again was wonderful.
She was also really glad to have a second chance with Pallegina. Catriona had urged her to make a deal that helped the most amount of people, not just the Republics, which ended up leaving them on... rough terms. She felt so guilty for what had happened, and hoped to at least re-establish the friendship they'd had before, if not helping her back into the good graces of the Republics.

The Captain’s Clothes
The Watcher gets a new look, and Tekēhu approves.
[I’m on a roll for short POE fic apparently. Just short, silly snippets I had ideas for as I played! They’re making me happy to write, either way. And my Watcher isn’t nameless anymore!! Also on my AO3, which is Amariahellcat - I know tumblr hates links so I avoid that these days haha]
Fort Deadlight is an unsavory but necessary stop before they depart for further shores. Though they agree on little, Tekēhu can tell this is one thing he and Aloth are of a like mind on - the elf’s gaze just as sharp and weary as it is in the middle of a battlefield.
Alina is as stoic as ever, emotions locked tight behind a diplomatic grimace - a stoicism he now knows is a show for the factions, for the World at large, the image of her dancing and laughing as she’s passed between companions playing in his mind’s eye- as they meet with Aeldys, the Principi speaking warmly to the paler woman.
“‘Cap’is smart, knows ta play nice wit’all th’factions fer now.” Serafen mutters, eyes narrowed as he keeps a keen eye out for any mind magic, “Least it ain’t Furrante.”
The Cipher doesn’t expand on that, and Tekēhu doesn’t ask; the middle of a Principi Fort is neither the time nor place for such discussions, he’s sure.
Besides, whatever Alina says must have made Aeldys incredibly happy - she throws her head back with a cackling laugh, snapping her fingers. “Ahah, yer a smart cookie, Lovesome! Well done indeed. Here, yer reward, as promised. With some... extra goodies, on me. Can’t have th’Watcher runnin’ around lookin’ like she crawled outta’some grave!”
Edér snorts to his left, covering it up with a cough when Alina shoots him a look over her shoulder.
“Thank you.” she says, pointing at Edér when one of Aeldys’ men approaches with a large trunk, “He’ll be carrying that back.”
Neither Serafen or himself can stop from laughing at that. Even Aloth lets out the tiniest chuckle.
Edér only groans. “Aye, Captain.”
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
“I wonder what was in that trunk…”
Serafen twitches an ear in his direction, shrugging a shoulder. “Beats me, lad. Pirate booty o’some sort, I imagine.”
The Cipher’s wording has his mind wanting to spiral down another train of thought, but Tekēhu dutifully shakes it off, persisting. “It is curious, though, is it not? They have been down there for an hour! Ekera, it must be something marvelous!”
“It is clothes.”
The utter disdain in Pallegina’s voice draws their attention more than her words, catching the avian godlike as she steps fully up onto the deck.
“Clothes?” Tekēhu repeats, curious.
“Ac, that is what I said. Principi styles - Xoti and Maia have been playing dress up with the Watcher since discovering what was inside the chest.”
“You are not interested, I assume?”
Pallegina’s nose wrinkles, eyes narrowed. “It is not the style of clothing I would choose for the Watcher, or for myself - I was getting annoyed merely by being in the room.”
“Come now, lass, th’clothes can’t all be that bad?”
“Stripes and eyepatches, Serafen.”
The Cipher winces, one ear swiveling back towards the stairs. “Yikes. Ah guess we’ll find out shortly what they settled on…”
Tekēhu stops listening halfway through the other’s words, eyes locked on the figure of their Captain as she climbs up the stairs and alights on the deck - pausing to glance around and then heading their way.
The only stripes on the Captain’s ensemble are on the wide sash she’s wrapped around her slim waist, and there’s not an eyepatch to be seen.
Deep turquoise pants tucked into dark boots, a black billowy top that is open at her mid-drift and between her breasts, and a golden collar that adorns her throat and shoulders.
Ngati smiles on me, I say. Tekēhu watches her openly as she approaches them, appreciating the outfit and the way it hugs her slim frame - eyes flicking up to her head and his smile widening.
“Ah, Captain, you look ravishing. But I do have one critique, I’m afraid.”
Alina hesitates, eyebrows lifted. “Go on.”
“I am afraid the hat does you no favors - might I convince you to discard it?”
Pallegina makes a soft noise of agreement. “Ac, thank you, Tekēhu! I am glad it is not only me!”
“Ahh, gotta agree with th’fish boy, Al - th’hat ain’t yer style.”
Alina grins - a wide, bright expression that leaves him momentarily stunned - and reaches up to pull the wide brimmed hat from her head, toying with it’s feather. “I didn’t think the hat would suit me either, but Xoti insisted-”
“Hat’s are great!!! It looked so nice!!”
“-but, since the majority agrees with me… no hat.” Alina plucks the feather out and tosses the hat out over the rail of the ship, earning a few whistles and cheers as it disappears into the ocean, “A small offering to Ondra - I promise to make a proper one, later.”
“I shall ask Ngati to accept.” Tekēhu chuckles, going still when she holds the feather out to him, “Ah, Captain?”
“Here, a present.” Alina’s smile gives nothing away, but her cheeks are flushed pink, eyes bright and hopeful, “The colour suits you - a thank you, for joining me.”
“Careful, Captain, else you’ll make me blush.” Tekēhu takes the feather carefully, delighting in the brush of her fingers against his, and makes sure to hold her gaze as he fiddles with it, “I will be sure to treasure it.”
Alina just watches him for a moment - seemingly caught by the twiddling, but he notices her eyes fading out again, expression slack for just barely a second - before she comes back to herself and runs her hand through her hair, mussing it.
“Back to work, then.” she mumbles, smile a tad smaller than before, as she turns to make her way further up - flashing gold and turquoise as she moves.
Tekēhu spins the feather a few more times - thinking of another feather he carries, and wondering at the much heavier weight this one seems to carry, the pull he feels to it’s gifter.
Then he smiles, and tucks it away for a later time.

6, 15, 21 & 28 for Junisce or Tai Lon (or both)?
I’m going to go with Jun for these since Tai Lon got two asks earlier~ thanks for asking!!
6. What is their favorite feature of their partner’s? Physically, Junisce really likes Serafen’s eyes.  She loves their color and how they change in different lights, how he doesn’t realize that the way they glint gives away his emotions (most people don’t), how they light up (literally) when he uses his cipher powers.  In general, she is most attracted to Serafen’s wit.  She finds herself smiling most around him, even when his jokes are 200% inappropriate for the situation, and she loves it.Serafen’s favorite thing about Junisce’s appearance is her thighs, and yes, he is Very aware of how thirsty that sounds because it’s mostly accurate.  But she is incredibly strong, and he thinks that’s hot.  For a while, this is also his general answer, though he does appreciate Jun’s clever tongue and absolute lack of patience with authority.  However, after getting to know her better, Serafen also finds Junisce’s tenacity very attractive because it stems from a place of much deeper emotion that drives her decisions in life, even though she doesn’t show it directly.
15. Who wakes up first?Serafen.  He’s used to ship schedules and waking up early af to get shit done, whereas Jun has generally only gotten up in reaction to being threatened or feeling rested.  Perks of living along and outside of society and all that.
21. Who is more likely to start dancing with the other?Serafen lol.  Jun never really learned to dance and she’s not super graceful, but Serafen is always up for some Shenanigans in the tavern or on the deck of the ship when enough people start drinking and singing sea shanties.  I keep meaning to write about this, but it was during one of these dances that Jun had her first moment of, “Shit, I might be in love with him.”
28. What do they do when they’re away from each other?Well, there’s two parts to this: the first time they spend a long time apart, and then every time after that.
After they part ways near the end of Deadfire, Junisce spends a long while trying to come to terms with the fact that she fell so hard for someone who never returned her feelings, but she doesn’t regret getting to know him or helping him figure out his shit.  She doesn’t write, but does keep tabs on the Principi, enough to know that he’s alive and thriving.  Meanwhile, Serafen has a damn good time working his way up the ranks of the Principi and fighting for what he believes in while also making far too much money for any reasonable person.  It’s almost two years after the Ukaizo incident when another Principi captain, who has their nose in the slave trade has had about enough of Serafen, specifically begins searching for Remaro and Junisce.  Serafen realizes the plan after saving Remaro from execution by Aeldys after he’s turned in, and immediately drops off the face of the archipelago so that he can try to reach her first and warn her.
He doesn’t physically make it in time, but he does unknowingly unlock a power that he and Junisce use after this, generally, when they’re apart: as both Serafen and Jun are ciphers, and due in no small part to Jun’s incredible awareness as a Watcher, they can remotely influence each other’s dreams.  Serafen does this without meaning to the first time, warning Junisce successfully that she’s being targeted and ultimately preventing her from being kidnapped.  They use it a lot more from then on whenever they’re not together…but it’s mostly to fuck with each other. :p

Dragon Age II, day 2.
Killing the serial killer in Magistrate’s Orders is just so satisfying.
Bless him, Taran genuinely cares about elves, especially since he came to Kirkwall and started associating with them even more regularly, but he may still be a little clumsy in his concern at times.
Just so you’re warned, Merrill. (And on the subject of you being warned about stuff, Merrill, I’m glad you had the chance to meet Duncan and get used to the idea of beards.)
Ginnis sounds maddeningly familiar, though she apparently doesn’t share a VA with Captain Aeldys from Deadfire, whom she sounds very much like. Go figure.
Merrill and Varric taking the piss out of each other is the most heartwarming thing I’ve seen all day.
...Anders, please, you are not the love interest this time, wait your turn. Taran doesn’t want to have to be sharp with you, you’ve been a good and useful friend.
I swear I didn’t take a single flirt option, all I did was be nice to him. It makes sense that Anders in particular would respond to that by flinging himself bodily at the nice person with great force, but still, awkward.
Hello, Fenris. Hm. There are patterns to sir’s writing that Fenris doesn’t quite fit, so I look forward to learning about the character in detail.
And Isabela has been recruited. Excellent.
I’ve officially run out of Act I stuff to do, so I suppose it’s time to head for the Deep Roads. Welp. Sorry in advance, Bethany.
And since it’s nearly midnight, I’ll have to bang out the rest of the Deep Roads tomorrow.

Can't put this under a read more because I'm on mobile, but here's some PoE2 including non watcher OCs
---
They entered The Wild Mare to the sound of cheers. Caelenwae supposed this was normal, if it wasn't directed towards a nature godlike, feet propped up on a table, surrounded by people he'd- she assumed - had knocked out. She heard Tekehu let out a low, impressed whistle.
“I say, he seems to be rather good at raising spirits.” The marine godlike raised a brow, before he caught the bartender making his way over. “Ah, apart from those of the owner, it seems.”
The godlike took a long drink from his ale, before meeting the eyes of the barkeep with his own, glowing yellow one. He flashed a smile, just the wrong side of cheeky. His boots hit the floor with a thud and he leaned forward, still with that toothy smile.
“In my defence, I didn't start this one.” He tossed his head, brown curls bouncing as he did. His hair was rather short, but not enough so that his hair didn't fall in his eyes. His horns were curled and dark, like a rams, and his ears were long and goat like. “I swear, Gyntel, I came here for a drink. Not to cause trouble.”
“And yet trouble you caused.” He gestured to the men lying on the floor. The godlike feigned shock.
“This is trouble? I thought I'd get rid of the vermin in your tavern. Isn't that a service?”
“A service I did not ask for, Forsyth.” Gyntel pinched the bridge of his nose, as though warding off an oncoming headache. The man - Forsyth - sighed.
“Look, I'll finish my drink and be out of your hair. For maybe a week. You know you'd miss me if I were gone any longer.” Gyntel muttered something about missing the solitude while Forsyth was here, before stomping off back behind the bar. Tekehu let out a delighted laugh.
“Oh, I like him!”
“You would. He reminds me of you.” Caelenwae said and she heard Rilien hide a snort as a cough and Aloth’s annoyed huff of breath through his nose. “He’s wearing Principi leathers. Might do us some good to talk to him. Might know something about the bloke who tried to kill us near Port Maje.”
“It won't be much use if you can't remember his name.” Xoti pointed out. Caelenwae waved a hand flippantly.
“It was Ben-something.” She said. “Surely he can work something out from that.”
“I'm sure that there are lots of ‘Ben’s around here.” Rilien said, fiddling with his hat, a fancy Vailian thing that he had taken a liking to. It was a nice change from him hiding in the background, but she supposed that raising a wurm from a tiny thing to one the size of a small tiger would force someone into the spotlight. Fortunately, Talzri was currently on The Defiant.
Forsyth was still nursing his ale when they made their way over, and glanced up. His eyes lit up with curiousity.
“Ah, you're the magician from the docks, yes?” He rested his chin on his hand, and this close Caelenwae could see the moss growing on his skin, here and there dotted with plant life. He had a daisy sprouting on one hand and he plucked it off without a care. “Apologies for the blooming - a bad habit. But you...you're no second rate magician with a few colourful illusions.” He smiled. “The tale of the Watcher of Caed Nua travels far. You have some enemies, but a great deal more friends.” He winked. “How may I assist you?”
“You're one of the Principi?” Caelenwae gestured to his attire and Forsyth pulled a face.
“Was. I had a...disagreement with my captain. I didn't mutiny as much as ditched them when they docked.” He shrugged. “Why?”
“Looking for someone. He attacked my ship when I first reached the Deadfire. A Ben...something.”
“Benweth?” Forsyth hazarded, running a hand through his curls. “All talk, that man. He acts big, but he's only where he is because Aeldys likes him. You want him, he'll be at Fort Deadlight. I'd suggest trying to bargain with him - killing him wouldn't impress the second most powerful pirate in the Deadfire. Trust me when I say you want Aeldys on your side - she may be a pirate, but she focuses on cargo that doesn't breathe.”
“Slavers?” Rilien’s question was stilted, and Caelenwae caught Aloth’s hand grabbing his wrist.
“The Deadfire is big. It's illegal to sell natives. Slavery itself isn't.” Forsyth snorted. “An oversight on the part of the law. But you can't enforce the law throughout the Deadfire. That's...pretty much impossible. I’m assuming all but the pretty fish are new to the Deadfire?”
“Ekera, I do like you.” Tekehu sounded delighted and Forsyth shot him a wink. Caelenwae could practically feel Aloth rolling his eyes.
“You'd be the first.”
