Square Foot Gardening Update!

I harvested the onions and garlic yesterday - this is what I got from my raised bed in the hellstrip by the street. A 2x5 patch yielded 27 heads of hardneck 'Killarney Red' garlic and 20 'Yellow Rock' onions that I planted last October, along with 20 little 'Candy Apple' red onions that I planted in April for use as scallions. I'll replant those little red onions and two dozen of the largest garlic cloves in the Fall. Onions and garlic are dead simple to grow and make a good beginner crop.

Here's how the raised bed looked on May 3rd. The onions are in the left midground, the garlic in the right midground, the leeks and potatoes are visible in the background. I reserved the empty foreground patch for a pole bean planting I planned for late May. A few scallions spilled over into the bean patch because I intended to take them early, before the beans took over.

Here's how the pole beans looked as of this morning. I built a trellis between two beds to increase the bean growing area and make them orders of magnitude easier to pick. The bamboo I got from a patch growing in my Japanese-style back garden. The bare patch on the extreme lower left of the photo is where the onions and garlic were.

Here's my husband showing one day's bean and tomato harvest. This is what it's yielding every 3-5 days.

And just for giggles, here's my flower bed that's in the hellstrip behind the beans, sweet peppers and tomatoes. The gladiolus and cosmos are just starting to bloom; the bachelor buttons and nasturtiums have been blooming for quite a while now. (In the spring it's a riot of crocuses, daffodils, irises and hyacinths.)

If there's enough interest I can post how to build the watering grids. Building them yourself is far cheaper than buying pre-assembled ones online.

I see you are a perfumer! What’s a good advice to give someone with a terrible sense of smell and by that I mean I smell a perfume and all I can say is that it smells like the label. I don’t understand what it means to detect differences in cheap perfume, good perfume, also the titles— if they’re even realistic. Basically Ive never picked up a perfume I genuinely liked above all the others because it just all becomes one big blend of good smell (I hardly find bad ones)

AH I could write you a full paper on this or make a ppt, but I will try to keep things short. The truth of the matter is that perfumers actually have to train their nose to smell the different individual scents making up a fragrance so it's normal/expected that it's hard to figure out specifics without doing a looooot of intentional sniffing of your own. For my class, I spent so much time memorizing scents LOL and I'm nowhere near what I'd need to be to be considered for a proper degree in it lol.

In general, I encourage folks to figure out what scent family and or vibes that you like. (Here's a link that goes into depth) or just use this over generalized list:

Florals - Rose, Lillies, Ylang Ylang

Fruity - Pear, Orange, Apples

Fresh - Linen, Cotton, "Water"

Gourmands - Chocolate, Vanilla, Coconut, Cake

Woody - Cedar, Pine, Sandalwood

Spicy - Cinnamon, Patchouli (which is also considered woody tbh)

But once you figure out the vibes you like, I would pick a brand at a store (Replica @ Sephora is my fav pick for beginners) and look up the perfumes on Fragrantica. Then see which perfumes fit the vibes you like from above. If you can make the trip in or get your hands on a discovery kit, spritz some onto paper, let it settle and then sniff. Sniff again in 30 min. Write down your thoughts! Only spray your final picks on you- see how they smell after an hour. The base notes will be revealed by then.

A lot of picking out perfume is just trial and error. But once you start narrowing down what you like, you can generally suss out the scents you like. And it's easier to tell the differences between them. Basically the more you do it, the better you get.

Example: At the beginning of my perfume journey I wanted to find something new to year. I love my Mother's Chanel, but wanted something less "perfumey" so I went on fragrantica and looked at the notes ---Rose and Jasmine stood out so I checked out what Replica had and tried out several scents before settling on Lazy Sunday Morning. They smell completely different but it has similar notes that I love (ROSE). I had to shop around a bit to find it and probably wouldn't have picked it up on my own.

Fwiw: If you can tell me things you like (both perfume or bathroom products i.e. shampoos etc) I can give you starting points! I keep a collection of perfume at home so when my friends come over, I can give them suggestions based on vibes or scent families.

ex. I want to smell like a basic bitch candy rose -> Rose Goldea (no hate to this scent; i wear it often)

ex. I want a warm gourmand scent that's unique -> Ummagumma

👻 GHOST - do they believe in ghosts? what are their "ghostly experiences", if any?

OH UHH Annie. Annie believes in ghosts SUPER hardcore. Where she lives, ghost sightings, and otherworldly experiences are all too common.

She's had many paranormal experiences but her first one was while she was a beginner filming photographer. She was helping one of her friends shoot a mini-movie for a school project at an apartment complex, where she helped with filming and creating "promo" posters for the "movie". They were filming in the 4th apartment on the 4th floor of this well-known apartment complex for a week straight. Over the week, strange small occurrences began happening that slowly drove the crew of 20, and on the 7th and last day, the remaining crew got so scared that most of them left. Annie's friend has personally drove some of them home while Annie helped the 4 remaining crew members pick up the equipment. While taking equipment down the stairs, Annie had suddenly heard one of her friends scream, dropping everything to go run to their aid, as she wasn't very far away. When she got there, one of the crew members was holding onto the door frame tightly, as if something was pulling her and she was trying to hang on. Annie grabbed her and tried to help her out, but the creature was stronger. It pulled the girl into the impossibly dark room, and Annie with her.

However, the apartment [the 4th apartment, on the 4th floor] already had the four people it wanted, and as a result... an unknown force threw Annie out of the room with such force that she was sent flying down the hallway and collided with the elevator at such a speed that she was seriously injured. A couple who was coming out saw it happen and began to call the cops when they saw the 4th apartment's door wide open... with blood-covered, sharp teeth in it's door frame. It then shut, and the 4 people inside the apartment, as well as the door to the apartment itself, disappeared into thin air... Cops broke into that apartment but found no bodies, they couldn't find even a trace of the 4 missing people... just a completely empty hole, as if the apartment itself never existed.

😨 FEARFUL - when scared, do they go into "flight" or "fight"?

Annie typically goes into a flight reaction when scared, but sometimes she'll have an adrenaline-driven fight reaction.

Annie likes... salt water taffy candies. it's her comfort candy of choice and. strangely popular with some spirits.

Annie loves cake! Her favorite cake is those rocky road ice cream cakes... while her favorite general favorite cake flavor is just basic chocolate cake! She isn't picky about cake types, but she has a bias for ice cream cakes...

🕷 SPIDER - what is their biggest fear? do they have any irrational / mundane fears?

Annie's biggest fear is... apples. Don't laugh at her but she has an irrational fear of apples. She's too embarrassed to explain why/lh

🪤 MOUSE TRAP - what will always lure them into certain danger? a loved one in danger? a promise of something they are always searching for?

Annie is typically the shy but overly cautious type and doesn't enjoy putting herself in certain danger. Sometimes, however, certain danger likes to cling to her, and she sometimes gets LITERALLY dragged into danger by whatever entity wants her. Sometimes her body will act before she can. Sometimes she gets possessed and goes into danger unwillingly. Other times she's tricked into it. There is a LIST of things that would cause her to go into certain doom but the short answer is.

Annie enjoys getting her picture taken! She has the little peace sign go-to pose it's sooo cute ouo Obviously, Annie likes taking pictures so much she decided to major in it lmao She likes to take pictures of people, places, things, etc. Sometimes her pictures turn out to be... supernatural, as she can see some otherwise invisible creatures through her camera lens.

🔪 KNIFE - how do they react to injury / misfortune befalling their loved ones (significant other, family, friends)? do they put themselves at blame?

ANNIE IS VERY EMOTIONAL she will be so distraught if someone she loves gets injured or has misfortune fall upon them. She'd blame herself if she was around shortly before the incident because. the creatures of the dark and horror follow her wherever she goes.

I’ve always liked anCnoc. Distilled at the Highland distillery of Knockdhu, its core 12 Year Old is a relatively easy dram that I would recommend to a whisky beginner, or to someone who just wants a simple everyday dram. But another unique side of anCnoc (yes, spelled with the little a and Capital C in the middle) is their tendency to release whiskies in vintages. We got to try the 2002 and the newly launched 2009 Vintage at a lunch event at Bunglow37 earlier this week. The anCnoc 2009 Vintage is distilled in 2009, fully matured in first-fill European and American oak casks and bottle in 2021 (which pretty much makes it a 12YO). In fact, the feeling I got from it is almost like drinking two different drams in one. On the nose, you get sweet honey and clean, crisp orchard fruit notes, predominantly green apples. The palate is where the most drastic changes occur. Initially, you get a brilliant sweet shine of honey candied fruits, but in the middle, the heavier spiced notes start coming out, with hints or cinammon, toffee, pepper and chocolates, segueing into a long and spiced finish. We also got to try the older 2002 Vintage, which is matured in Spanish and American oak casks, and apparently bottled in 2017, which makes it a 15YO. This was a bit more straightforward than the 2009, but no less tasty. On the nose, there’s lovely light spice notes and honey, very reminiscent of anCnoc’s core 12YO, and that dash of sweetness upon entry is also there, which then moves into spiced cinnamon and a bit of dark bitter chocolates. The finish is long and spiced, but much mellower than the 2009. Another really good core expression is the Peatheart, which is the heavily peated expression but reminded me more of a Peated Cask whisky rather than one made with peated malt.
