We’re finally getting a real ending to Final Space?!
I still would have preferred Rick and Morty being canceled for good for Final Space, but this is the best news to wake up to on a Monday!

I don't know if it's just me, but are they gradually dumbing down Rick's character for the sake of keeping the show popular?
I got extreme Peter Griffin vibes from this episode, and I feel like in general he's a lot less sharp and cool gritty and witty and "unconventional" the way that he was the first couple of seasons. He wasn't an easy character to "swallow" in a lot of ways so to speak, and I feel like he's gradually getting dumber, more cloudy around the edges, less sharp and more conventional and shallow with a lot of the things that he says. He feels extremely typical sometimes this season-like more of the character that people would watch because the character doesn't challenge their headspace in any kind of way, and is someone that encourages their complacent drunk dead personality.
The character used to say things that was really unpopular, or at the very least would occasionally say things that would make people uncomfortable (just things like "if you know how you're going to die because of how boring your life is then you're not even alive" and just things that challenged at the boring drunk complacent status quo that most American sitcom characters are), was an extreme breath of fresh air in terms of how sharp he was and how he wasn't afraid to challenge everything even if it was just in a TV show character kind of way, and it's one of the things that stuck out about me about him the most, especially as someone who is mentally ill and feels detached from most of American culture.
I might just be in a bad mood, but I genuinely feel like Rick feels less sharp and "unconventional"and is starting to feel increasingly more dumb, dopey and easy to swallow as a character.
I still love him and I always will, and sometimes I find it endearing, but this episode in particular felt like he was just being a dumb genuine and boring drunk (really just in terms of the scene with Beth, but considering that the episodes are only about 22 minutes, there isn't a lot of elbow room to work with, especially considering most of this episode was summer screen time).
The only reason why I care so much is because of Rick is one of the very few characters I've ever been genuinely connected with, so I'm just worried that Rick as a character is going down to gradual slippery slope of just becoming an American extremely overly dumbed it down product. The show was so gritty and real and raw and a lot of ways for the first three to four seasons and kept that touch up to season 6, but this season just feels like they're gradually going into "American Dad" type feeling territory, and I'm vaguely worried a little bit about my connection to the show. Especially as someone that does not connect to things easily or ever at all really. And partially because everything is so dumbed down and doesn't seem to have any and genuine philosophy behind it except of being another brainless thing for people to consume to pass the time.
#I'm just complaining to myself#because I don't like talking to people on Reddit#lol#rick and morty#if anybody thinks that I'm being melodramatic then I am because there is such thing as being mentally ill because of real life#problems and being deeply in love with characters because for whatever reason that's what makes sense to my brain#I have no friends in this fandom so I can post as obnoxiously as I want anyway lol#Rick is one of the very few things that means enough to me to bring out this passionate side of me#when it comes to consumption#literally not even kidding but my attachment to Rick is so deep#that even just having a certain kind of dopey looked his expression after being confronted in a certain way from being caught drunk can put#me off#for the record I am aware of the fact that my attachment to Rick is unhealthy#and therefore how passionate I am about him is vaguely off-putting or a lot off putting depending on who you are#but I am a self-aware unhealthy person#and I'm also wear the fact that literally nobody has to put up with somebody else's posts if they don't like how intense or mentally ill#they are#fans like me would be better off at this point if the show was canceled#not because I want it to be but because I've become so specifically attached in my extreme labretentious way from other way that Rick was#presented the first six or so seasons that I feel like at this point I've become almost too picky#and obviously it's not about what I think#but I am saying this as someone that is more than content to be fixated on a canceled TV show because of how perfect it already was#like bj#literally the strongest relationship I've ever had with a character#and it's from a canceled TV show of literally 4 years lol

i have such mixed feelings on them making it so beth’s decision in the abcs of beth was actually rick’s decision. like it does really good and interesting things for rick’s character but almost at the expense of beth’s? because in that moment she’s finally allowing herself to choose the life she wants, screw everything else. she hates that rick abandoning her hurt her, she hates that she needed him so much, she hates that getting pregnant and having a family prevented her from following her dreams, she hates that so much of her life was dictated by the fact that she cared. rick doesn’t care and so he gets to do whatever he wants, beth does care and so, in her mind, she’s stuck in a life she didn’t get to choose and now has the chance to change that. but in actuality, she still just wants to know whether or not rick actually cares about her. it almost feels like an undermining of everything that happened in abcs of beth, right? but then they sort of recover from it by having both beths realize after they meet each other that 1.) rick wouldn’t have loved her any more no matter what decision she made and 2.) his approval doesn’t matter anyway because he took the cowards way out of any responsibility and wasn’t even brave enough to just tell her he loves her. and then i think season 6‘s solaricks and bethic twinstinct also make me like the decision more because they actually do interesting stuff with beth’s conflict over who she is and what kind of life she wants.

I just found out about all the shit going on with Justin Roiland...I am genuinely fucking devastated.
Rick and Morty has been my favorite show for several years, and it holds such an important place in my heart, looking forward to new episodes on Sunday's quite frequently being what got me motivation to get through the week.
So finding out all this is just...a punch in the fucking throat to anyone that this show made an impact on. Because without Justin Roiland, the show is as good as dead. It doesn't matter how good of replacement voice actors they find for Rick and Morty. It won't be the same without him, especially since it's not just replacing one main character, but two, and the writer and creator as well.
I am genuinely so disgusted and disturbed by the accusations against him, and hope the people he hurt get justice. I also hope that Dan Harmon and everyone else working on the show will see the incredibly sad truth that without Justin Roiland, Rick and Morty is over, at least in the form we all knew it as.
Don't try to replace him. His ties to the show have already been (understandably and rightfully) cut, and replacing him won't solve this.
Because the hard truth of the matter is that both Rick and Morty are as good as dead without Justin Roiland.
(Just to be clear - I am NOT saying that they should bring him back onto the show. They shouldn't. The things he did are completely unforgivable and repulsive, and in no way, shape or form should he be allowed to have his hand in any further episodes of Rick and Morty. I just personally feel as though if he isn't going to be a part of it anymore, the show should be over, since he voices both of the leads, and replacing both lead characters is bound to feel cheap, no matter how good they are. I am actually quite surprised that Adult Swim cut ties with him as fast as they did, and am glad that they handled the situation so maturely. He needs to be held accountable for what he did.)

I think about how we Final Space fans would have been gearing up for the new season about now or early next month.
Instead, Final Space is now just a memory because corporations decided to reduce Final Space to a tax write-off.
Olan Rogers is the walking definition of “deserves better”.

I can't believe I am saying this about my most hated Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs character and animal in general but Steve the monkey or any monkey for that matter would be a better sidekick for Rick Sanchez than that devilish holy terror he's got right now.

This tweet's original post is full of stories about networks and creators derailing, ruining and canceling shows once they earned a female fanbase. People ask for an example of a TV show where the opposite happened. Would they believe me if I mentioned a little show called Rick and Morty? (No, they wouldn't.)
Despite season one's issues, including a whole episode where the writers spewed through Rick "Girls are DUMB and don't understand science! No girls allowed!!", the series attracted a huge female and LGBT fanbase.
Instead of doubling down to scare us off, Adult Swim famously hired more female writers for season three, dismissing the dudebros' ire. This could've been a token gesture to ward off bad press, but they continued hiring female writers for later seasons.
Other developments include selling merchandise at Rue 21 and Charlotte Russe, collaborating with Dolls Kill and Glamlite, introducing another female character (Space Beth) and firing a certain misogynist creep despite his status as co-creator and lead voice actor, which the dudebros didn't take very well. Elon Musk publicly whined about it.
Seasons six and seven are when the writers really started emphasizing Rick's attachment to his daughters, granddaughter and late wife. He flat-out says that he respects Summer and she reminds him of Diane. "No" also disappears from his vocabulary when one of them wants something.
The series also starts giving the Tumblr side of the fandom what we want: Rick in a suit and tie, Rick announcing that Rickcest is canon, Beth and Space Beth dating, Rick giving Morty his lab coat when they're cold (a fandom staple since season one), more acknowledgement that Rick is autistic, etc. Meanwhile, the bro contingent gets increasingly angry about Rick and Morty going "woke," which Adult Swim ignores.
But good luck saying this outside the fandom because the general reaction is "haha you like the cringe pickle man show 🤪"

Where are the teenage/YA cartoons?
Tumblr media
Recently, two cartoons that were slated to be on Cartoon Network, Unicorn: Warriors Eternal and My Adventures With Superman, are now going to be on Adult Swim.
To me, this move makes no sense. These shows could have diversified Cartoon Network’s very barebones lineup, but they were shoved to Adult Swim. I sorta understand Unicorn, as it is dark (but definitely not on the same level as Primal, one of Genndy Tartakovsky’s other shows), but My Adventures with Superman? That show seems pretty innocuous. It has a bright color palette and doesn’t seem similar to Harley Quinn or the later seasons of Young Justice.
This reminds me of the desperate need there is for teen/YA-oriented western cartoons. In western animation, there are three primary audiences:
Preschoolers; anything rated TV-Y, shown on PBS Kids, Nick Jr, Disney Junior, or Cartoonito. Example: Doc McStuffins.
Big kids/elementary school crowd; anything rated TV-Y7, can be seen on Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, and Disney Channel. Example: The Amazing World of Gumball.
Adult; anything rated TV-14 or TV-MA, seen on Adult Swim, Comedy Central, or the prime time Fox lineup. Example: Rick and Morty.
That’s it. Despite what the rating of TV-14 might lead you to believe, the stuff on Animation Domination or Adult Swim isn’t targeted to teenagers, obviously.
This leaves teenagers in a weird spot when it comes to watching cartoons (western ones, that is. They definitely watch anime). They tend to stick with big kids and/or adult cartoons, like Avatar. With all of the heavy subject matter it and Korra tackle, they definitely feel more like teenage cartoons, especially since they were inspired by anime.
I bring up anime because they have clearly defined demographics, including teenagers. They have manga/anime for teenage boys, shonen (Naruto, One Piece, Dragon Ball Z), and teenage girls, shojo (Fruits Basket, Kamisama Kiss, Yona of the Dawn).
Shojo anime (except Sailor Moon) pretty much never air on American TV, but when shonen anime are exported here, they end up on Adult Swim’s Toonami block. For example, Demon Slayer aired on Toonami (they had to stop airing it because it got too expensive), and in America, the Mugen Train movie was rated R. This despite Demon Slayer being aimed at teenagers, and also being enjoyed by small children in Japan. They even had a Japanese Happy Meal promotion that ran alongside Pretty Cure, a show that actually is aimed at small children (kodomomuke).
With America’s teenagers flocking to anime, I believe that the American animation industry should keep up with the times and try to capitalize on the teenage demographic instead of shoehorning shows to be for elementary schoolers or adults.
Here are some western cartoons I believe could be classified as YA/teenage shows:
Avatar and Korra, as mentioned above.
Most cartoons aired on MTV, such as Daria, Beavis and Butthead, and Clone High. It helps that MTV itself was aimed at teenagers. Aeon Flux is an exception however, as it is clearly for adults. They’re often shoehorned into the category of “adult animation,” but their subject matter is more appealing to teens.
6teen. It’s right there in the title! Canada knows what’s up.
Total Drama, another Canadian cartoon. I know that they made the younger-skewing DramaRama spin-off because teenagers weren’t watching cartoons anymore, but now that the main show is coming back, it will definitely be aimed at teenagers again.
Sym Bionic Titan, yet another Tartakovsky show, pretty much is a teen/YA show, minus swearing. If I remember correctly, it aired on Toonami for a little while.
Regular Show. The most obvious example of a YA cartoon disguised as a kids cartoon.
Infinity Train. Never forget that it was cancelled because “no child entry point.”
As Told By Ginger is essentially a teen drama in animated form.
Invader Zim - Nickelodeon asked Johnson Vasquez to make a show directed towards older audiences, got exactly what they wanted (most of the viewership was from teens and adults, especially of the shops-at-Hot Topic variety) and cancelled it anyway.
Arcane is technically an adult series, but League of Legends is rated T by the ESRB, so I’m putting it in the teen/YA category (there IS a distinction between ‘young adult’ and ‘adult’)
I highly doubt that the likes of Nickelodeon will add a teenage animation block to their lineup (and TeenNick is nothing but iCarly reruns), but I hope that streaming services will start capitalizing on the YA demographic for western animation. Bee and Puppycat is a good start, featuring relatable young adult situations while technically being watchable for all ages. At least Unicorn is gonna air on ACME Night, which isn’t too late in the evening (currently, the block starts at 5:30 EST). And with Clone High and the aforementioned Total Drama making a comeback, I’m holding out hope for more YA animation.
