Does Jane Austen usually use the word plain to describe someone as Ugly?
I have assembled as many relevant quotes (see below) as I could find in Austen's works and I have a pretty good idea that "plain" is the opposite of handsome/pretty.
Etymoline agrees, "Of appearance, as a euphemism for "ill-favored, ugly" it dates from 1749."
One thing to add, there are many vaccine-preventable childhood illnesses, smallpox among them (which was being vaccinated for but this was new), that could cause permanent facial scarring. I'll put a mild example below the jump (do not Google if you are squeamish). I wonder if some of the "plain" people that Jane Austen was imagining were plain for this reason. Also, Sir Walter talks about plain women in Bath, but as it was a health destination, he may be seeing people who are actually ill.

Facial scarring from smallpox
Pride & Prejudice
Mary, who having, in consequence of being the only plain one in the family, worked hard for knowledge and accomplishments, was always impatient for display.
Not that I think Charlotte so very plain; but then she is our particular friend... Oh dear, yes; but you must own she is very plain. Lady Lucas herself has often said so, and envied me Jane’s beauty. (Mrs. Bennet)
Sense & Sensibility
When their promised visit to the Park and consequent introduction to these young ladies took place, they found in the appearance of the eldest, who was nearly thirty, with a very plain and not a sensible face, nothing to admire
Mansfield Park
Her brother was not handsome: no, when they first saw him he was absolutely plain, black and plain; but still he was the gentleman, with a pleasing address.
In a quiet way, very little attended to, she paid her tribute of admiration to Miss Crawford’s beauty; but as she still continued to think Mr. Crawford very plain, in spite of her two cousins having repeatedly proved the contrary, she never mentioned him.
She was then merely a quiet, modest, not plain-looking girl, but she is now absolutely pretty.
Emma
She was a plain, motherly kind of woman, who had worked hard in her youth
Oh! not handsome—not at all handsome. I thought him very plain at first, but I do not think him so plain now.
He is very plain, undoubtedly—remarkably plain:—but that is nothing compared with his entire want of gentility
Miss Campbell always was absolutely plain—but extremely elegant and amiable.
Mr. Dixon, you say, is not, strictly speaking, handsome?”
“Handsome! Oh! no—far from it—certainly plain. I told you he was plain.” “My dear, you said that Miss Campbell would not allow him to be plain, and that you yourself—” “Oh! as for me, my judgment is worth nothing. Where I have a regard, I always think a person well-looking. But I gave what I believed the general opinion, when I called him plain.”
Persuasion
He hoped she might make some amends for the many very plain faces he was continually passing in the streets.
Miss Carteret, with still less to say, was so plain and so awkward, that she would never have been tolerated in Camden Place but for her birth.
“I think very differently,” answered Elizabeth, shortly; “an agreeable manner may set off handsome features, but can never alter plain ones."

HONEY REVENGE
07.12.2023 @ Camden Assembly, London (220 Capacity)
Written Dec 2023
I started listening to Honey Revenge at the start of 2023, caught in the promo of their single ‘rerun’ & after seeing other artists I follow repost their content, I went back to listen to their discography & was hooked. Their debut album ‘Retrovision’ is one of my favourites of 2023 and all time (see review here). They never fail to miss with banger after banger - not just at first listen but the songwriting & production is amazing too. Naturally, as soon as this show was announced, tickets were bought. The band itself is made up of Devin on vocals and Donny on guitar, but are accompanied by their touring members, Tay Kincaid (bass) & Matt Arsenault (drums). They have played numerous tours this year alongside The Home Team & Broadside, Loveless, Finish Ticket & Arrows In Action. a US headline tour in the fall, and now The Home Team & The Used, here in the UK, with plans to open for Meet Me @ The Altar across the United States in the new year.
The fist opener was a rock band hailing from Leicester called Mouth Culture, taking inspiration from a range of musicians from Bring Me The Horizon to The 1975 to Harry Styles. THeir music is a mashup of all genres with a distinct heavy, edgy vibe. The second openers were a Scottish band called happydaze who are label buddies with Honey Revenge (Thriller Records). Their set was much heavier and had everyone hyped up for Honey Revenge’s set afterwards with heavy rock tunes that have a clear pop influence.
Seeing my favourite songs live was an unreal experience. I’ve been a fan of this amazing band for so long now and with all their concert content online, it’s safe to say that my expectations were high. But that didn’t matter because they were blown out of the park anyway. Due to the fact that this was a headline show, they were able to play every single song in their discography with no breaks, meaning that everyone in the crowd was able to hear their favourite Honey Revenge song. I never realized until I listened to the retrovision album in full, but Devin’s vocals are phenomenal and being able to sing so many belters back to back AFTER having rushed through London from an opening set down the road to this headlining gig is a real show of her talent - I know many of today’s new up-and-coming singers wouldn’t have been able even think about it, let alone actually doing it. Based on where we were in the crowd Ami & I watched both Donny & Devin kill it in real time and it was clear that everyone in the room enjoyed themselves the entire night.
Having come directly from their show with The Used, the band came on after happydaze had packed up their stuff and with Camden Assembly being such a small venue, the entire crowd was able to see them set up their equipment. Not just the drumkit and guitars, but the pedalboards, multicores & mic stands too - everything. Being a sound engineering student, I loved seeing this with a different lens than most people in the crowd, watching the team set up as quickly as possible just like how I’ve been doing in college with my classmates tells me I’m not too far from a professional standard within the industry and I can’t wait to be doing just that someday. Security was pretty tight at the venue (as one would expect in London). I wasn’t able to meet the band after the show due to me being underage and the band wasn’t able to come out of the bar but Ami was able to go in and get them to sign my ‘are you impressed?’ postcard & their CD lyric booklet that I had bought with me, so all was not lost and I was still able to buy a t-shirt from their tour manager, Em.
It's rarely heard of for a band like Honey Revenge to be able to come and do an international tour (even if it's as a support act) within their first year of touring. To be able to do a show as a headliner is unheard of outside of viral success and them being able to both so just proves that they’re here to stay and take over the music industry. Camden Assembly is an iconic venue with multiple star acts of the music scene such as Ed Sheeran, The Strokes & Adele starting out there and to be able to see my favourite band was a perfect close to the year.

Ayda had been sitting at her table for five minutes, building up the courage to go over to the blonde sitting two tables down from her. She had briefly met her at the awards ceremony last year. Taking a deep breath, she gets up and makes her way over to them.
"Hello," a smile etches into her features. "I don't know if you remember me, but I was wondering if I can ask you a few questions. I'm a candidate for assembly for Haringey and politics is new to me."

Not all social housing in the 1960s was about tower blocks. High-rise buildings were unpopular with tenants, lifts were costly and broke down, and the surrounding lawns were hard to maintain. Moreover, on the slopes around Hampstead Heath in London, towers would have blocked views towards St Paul’s Cathedral. This area became part of the newly created borough of Camden in 1965 and a visionary new chief architect, Sydney Cook, assembled a bright team of assistants to find an alternative form of housing. One of these young architects was Peter Tábori, who has died aged 83. The Whittington estate which he designed, originally known as Highgate New Town, exemplified a solution that was both innovative and successful.
Camden had identified an area of semi-derelict Victorian housing for redevelopment next to Highgate’s east cemetery, where Karl Marx is buried. Tábori realised that, on such a steep hillside, lines of flats and maisonettes could be stacked one above the other and entered from a common entrance at mid-level on the uphill side. Car parking could be set into the hill between these terraces and decked over with pedestrian walkways and children’s playgrounds.
He was inspired by medieval Italian hill towns and an internationally regarded scheme near Berne by the Swiss architects Atelier 5, but the greatest impression is of generous, humane spaces. The scheme was designed in 1968-70 but not completed until 1979 after the original contractors went bust.
The concept fitted perfectly with Cook’s own ideas and Tábori was a natural addition to the team. Other assistants working on similar solutions went on to greater recognition: Neave Brown’s complex terraces at Fleet Road (now Dunboyne Road) and Alexandra Road are listed, as are Gordon Benson and Alan Forsyth’s mainly two-storey houses on a steep slope at Branch Hill, Hampstead.
Together the group established a distinctive style for Camden’s best social housing using crisp white concrete, densely packed but relatively low-rise. Tábori’s Highgate New Town had the benefit of simplicity, in the design of the terraces and in his determination that public and private spaces should be clearly separated. This last avoided the problems faced by estates where indeterminate space led to vandalism. Mark Swenarton’s book Cook’s Camden (2017), to which Tábori generously contributed, records the inspiring story.
Highgate New Town was finely finished, the external concrete contrasting with handsome internal joinery. Cook claimed that “the quality of [Tábori’s] work isn’t just double site capacity at low rise, or all the higher standards, but that he did it all below yardstick”, the restrictive budget code imposed by governments at the time. In fact, Camden’s fine housing was made possible by its high domestic rates income and other London boroughs could not match its quality. Many of Tábori’s maisonettes remain tenanted, but those sold under “right-to-buy” legislation now fetch eye-watering prices.
Tábori went on to design a second scheme in 1971, Oakshott Court, Polygon Road, with three L-shaped terraces, but he was disappointed by a decision made in 1974 to use brick, apparently in deference to its location near St Pancras Station. A smaller scheme of 15 flats on the corner of Mill Lane and Solent Road followed in 1973 after Cook’s retirement, including four wheelchair-accessible units and five for elderly people. He also worked on a visionary programme with the architects/engineers Arup Associates for building over the main railway tracks that run through Camden, an attempt to gain space in the overcrowded borough.
He was born Peter Stroh in Budapest, the son of Istvan Stroh, a professor of mathematics, and his wife Erzsebét (nee Szanto), a former opera singer. She subsequently married Michael Tábori, an economist whose father had died at Auschwitz. Both men had been imprisoned by the communist government and following the 1956 uprising in Budapest, Peter too was arrested. On his release in December 1956 he, Erzsebét and Michael emigrated to London via Vienna, along with other members of Michael’s family. Thenceforth Tábori used his stepfather’s surname and adopted it formally on becoming a British citizen in 1966.
Tábori learned English and technical drawing with an architect, Cecil Epril, and in 1958 entered Regent Street Polytechnic (now the University of Westminster). His tutors included Richard Rogers, who inspired his interest in mass housing, and who himself designed an (unbuilt) hillside scheme in Croydon inspired by Atelier 5. Tábori assisted on Rogers’s first built house, Creekvean, with Su Rogers and Norman Foster.
Tábori also spent two years working for Ernö Goldfinger, the Hungarian-born architect immortalised by Ian Fleming, before completing his qualifications. The final external examiner was Denys Lasdun, who gave him a job assisting on the University of East Anglia, another hillside building with a stepped section where he learned about concrete techniques. However, when in 1967 the chance came to work for Cook and develop his own housing interests, Tábori seized the opportunity.
He left the borough in 1984 and formed a private practice with John Green and Bob Winning, working mainly in Hamburg, Toulouse and Soweto.
Tábori married Angelika Schiel, a model, in 1962. They had three sons, Kris, Michael and Gabor, but divorced in about 1980, and Angelika, who became an upholsterer, died in 2016. Peter had a fourth son, Tom, in 1984, with Anne Saville, a welfare adviser at the charity Gingerbread, but the couple later separated. He is survived by his sons.

The Army is planning a 500% increase in artillery shell production, from 15,000 a month to 70,000, according to Army acquisition chief Doug Bush. Much of that increase will be fulfilled by the Scranton plant, which makes a large share of the country’s supply of artillery shells.
Across the US, munitions factories are increasing production as fast as possible. A Lockheed Martin plant in Camden, Arkansas, is cranking out a series of rockets and missiles, including those used by the Army’s Patriot missile system – all of which are in high demand in Ukraine. Bush told reporters in January that the Army was standing up a new plant in Garland, Texas to make artillery shells, while an existing plant is being expanded in Middletown, Iowa that loads, packs and assembles 155 millimeter shells.
Bush told CNN the Army intends to double the production of Javelin anti-tank missiles, make roughly 33% more Guided Multiple Launch Rocket Systems (GMLRS) surface-to-surface medium-range missiles a year, and produce each month a minimum of 60 Stinger anti-aircraft missiles – which were “almost not in production at all,” according to Bush.

Good morning! I hope you slept well and feel rested? Currently sitting at my desk, in my study, attired only in my NEW blue towelling robe, enjoying my first cuppa of the day. Happy Hump Day!
On one of the hottest days of year, we assembled on Camden High Street to witness the unveiling of two special paving stones for two people that have contributed greatly to music in Camden Town: dancer/DJ/music-maker Paul ‘Trouble’ Anderson and Kiss FM/Mi-Soul founder Gordon Mac. Paul played in a variety of clubs in Camden (The Electric Ballroom, Second Base @ Dingwalls and The Loft) and there was a Kiss FM office and a Kiss FM pirate radio studio on Greenland Street (just off Camden High Street) and, as you may remember, at that time, Second Base was Kiss FM’s premier club night and Dingwalls was the venue where we switched off pirate Kiss FM. As you can see from my photos, it was a fantastic turn-out to pay tribute to two iconic men.
Trevor Nelson talked about the Kiss FM office on Holloway Road and described it as a different world and, thinking back, it was. That original Kiss FM office was a different world, a better world, a happy, funky, joyful world full of vinyl junkies with outsized egos. There were non-stop arguments about everything and, now those days are gone, we all realise how trivial those arguments were. Trevor described them as the happiest days of his life and, for many of us, we feel the same. We were making a difference. We were playing real music. We were breaking records and breaking acts. And, when Kiss FM was over, gobbled up by faceless, clueless suits, our beautiful world became a barren desert.
Got into some good conversations with some lovely people yesterday and, after spending the morning with people I have known more than 40 years, I suddenly realised we are a happy family but we do have rules. Everybody wants to be part of the soul scene. Why wouldn’t they? We are happy, we are gorgeous, we are loving, we are caring. Down the years, the music has attracted people to the scene but, as we all know, a couple of bad eggs have snuck in! And when these wrong ‘uns show us who they truly are, we politely show them the door! One bad apple spoils the bunch. We have a strict door policy, innit? If you are cool and respectful, and you don’t try to scam, abuse or hurt our people, you can stay!
Have a wonderful and well-endowed Wednesday. I love you all. Yes, a crazy, bald man loves and cares about you.

Things are getting spicy!! ⚾️🌶 Mancini is a great fit for you guys. Can play left & right field, 1B and DH. Makes contact and should hit for more power out of the new cavernous LF at Camden Yards. Ton of versatility. I still would look at adding a Centerfielder. Bringing Laureano back would fit the bill. Shouldn’t cost that much to acquire him either. Yankees made big moves, they’re definitely better. Shocked the Dodgers, Braves, & Mets haven’t done anything big to this point. Really doubting Soto getting traded at this point. ~~Baseball Anon 😉
Baseball Anon you’re the best ⚾️💖 I can’t wait for postseason baseball with you 🥰 I’m really surprised that the Dodgers haven’t made a move too, but I guess they assembled their dream team during the offseason?

Aerojet Rocketdyne Completes Production Capabilities for Stinger Javelin and GMLRS
Aerojet Rocketdyne, an L3Harris Technologies company, has completed several milestones as it executes the $215.6M cooperative agreement signed last year with the Department of Defense (DoD) to expand and modernize facilities to support increased production demand primarily focused on Javelin, Stinger and the Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS). The cooperative agreement aligns with the DoD’s goal of increasing domestic production of solid rocket motors as it replenishes its ammunition supplies of the missile systems that have proven crucial to Ukraine’s defense from Russian attacks. As part of this effort, the company is building a new 65,000 sq. ft. facility GMLRS manufacturing facility at its Camden, Arkansas site, consolidating manufacturing activities from three buildings into one. The automation of processes, upgraded equipment and consolidation of cast and assembly operations to a single building will increase production capacity and overall production efficiency for this important program.
