Live blog Landcon (part 2)

It's time for a particularly anticipated moment: the Sam Heughan panel

How did he feel when he learned that he was going to film the Battle of Culloden which is at the heart of Scottish history? He indicates that it is a real turning point in the history of Scotland with the departure many Scots to new territories. It was quite an emotional moment to film this battle.

Sam Heughan indicates that filming for season 8 started 3 weeks ago. He says that during the reading of an episode of season 8, in a castle, with the rest of the cast, someone was playing the credits on bagpipes. It was at that moment that he realized that the adventure was almost over and he burst into tears.

A prequel in the works for Outlander

If Outlander ends soon, the American channel Starz does not wish to abandon this universe and has ordered a prequel centered on the parents of Jamie and Claire. Sam Heughan took advantage of his panel to say that he would be the first fan of this series called Outlander: Blood of My Blood.

Developed by Matthew B. Roberts, the show will explore the lives of Jamie's parents in the Scottish Highlands of the early 18th century and that of Claire's parents in World War I England.

Around ten actors are already attached to this project including Jamie Roy, Harriet Slater, Hermione Corfield and Jeremy Irvine who will respectively play Brian Fraser, Ellen MacKenzie, Julia Moriston and Henry Beauchamp.

Sam Heughan returns to the battle scenes and the importance of the weapons which played a large role in the victory of the Americans against the English during the revolution. He wonders why Brianna and Roger didn't bring guns to help Jamie win instead of books and matches.

Richard Rankin is his turn on stage

Richard Rankin would love to have the opportunity to film with Emma Stone. He really likes her performance in Poor Creatures.

Richard says that Sam, Sophie, Caitriona and himself spent a lot of time, off-camera, with the twins who played Jeremiah, in a nursery on set. The goal was to succeed in creating a bond of trust with them and for them to feel safe when playing.

What is his favorite quote about Roger? He indicates that it is during season 2 when Roger is looking for Geillis and he says “Smells like a fuckin’ barbecue”.

Like last year, Richard Rankin talks about the Rebus series in which he will star during his panel. He says the casting is incredible.

If he hadn't played Roger, Richard Rankin would have liked to play Black Jack Randall or Stephen Bonnet.

Joey Phillips begins his panel at Land Con 6

Joey would have liked Denzell to have a scene with Tom Christie. He indicates that in season 6, Tom Christie is not really a character that we can appreciate but he adds that in season 7, what he did for Claire broke his heart. He adds that he really likes Caitriona Balfe and Mark Lewis Jones and therefore, quite selfishly, he would like his character to have a scene with them.

What is the most difficult scene for Joey to film in Outlander? Unfortunately, he can't tell which one it is, because it's an upcoming scene. He says it's a scene where a lot is going to happen for Denzell and he adds that we'll quickly see what scene it is when it airs.

It’s hard to not have fun, when you’re working with people like Mr. Lacroix, unless he’s in one of those like moods, you know, when he like just wanders off and does not speak to anyone. But uhm…over the years, we’ve got amazing cast we’ve worked with and everyone has just a good time. I mean, there’s not always much time to mess around or play pranks or anything like that, but we do tend to have a good time… Caitriona Balfe is an amazing co-star, she’s got a terrible habit of corpsing, so if something goes wrong, her shoulders start to go (mimicks laughter). She would turn around in the scene, so no one can see her face and just leave me to deal with a lot of questions. Yeah, it’s a lot of fun, we get all… I’ve got my groomer, Wendy, I’ve been with from the beginning, she is also a ridiculous human being, and just a lot of fun, so we can go along, just not much as did in Season 1, not so fun (?).

Hi, so-called “shipper” here if we have to put a label on it, but I don’t believe I fall into any of the buckets you mentioned in your response to recent anon. I haven’t been here that long, I have no need to project any of my fantasies onto actors, I have read lots of opposing blogs, and I’m not mentally ill. I don’t think Sam and caitriona have 5 children (which much of anon’s argument is based on, I might add). I have some of the same questions as anon, yet on the flip side, there are enough other things that don’t add up that make me think they might actually be together. I won’t proclaim to “know” things but I am discerning enough to see which “receipts” could’ve been completely made up by someone with an agenda vs. which come straight from a source. Also, in response to a comment about how ES would lose it if faced with this logic: I think that exemplifies the problem with this fandom. We all have our different beliefs and are focused on reinforcing those and proving others wrong. There’s no room for polite discourse and collective brainpower to try to solve for the things that we can all likely agree are fishy…even if we won’t admit it to each other. I think I know what a lot of counterpoints to that would be, so maybe it’s not worth saying. Point is, we all have access to different “facts” and we all believe different things accordingly. It would be nice if we could be more kind to each other as a result. Thanks for reading.

I appreciate you reaching out, Anon. But given I've been in the Outlander fandom for 9 years and know all the back history, I have to disagree with you. You DO fall into one of the categories I mentioned in my previous post. You are still in category #2. 👇

You have fallen down the rabbit hole of shipper blogs and are prey to their manipulations. I have to admit some of them are very good at making their cases. BUT, the good news is you've found my blog, where you will see the TRUTH. Just scroll through my archives and there is no room for doubts. If you look at actual facts and truth, REALITY is clear: Cait and Tony have been together since 2014, have been engaged since 2018, have been married since 2019, and had a son in 2021. No matter how Extreme Shippers skew the truth, there is NO getting around the MULTITUDE of people who actually KNOW Cait, Tony, and Sam, who have publicly stated that Cait and Tony are together, and Cait and Sam are just friends and costars.

There is NO getting around the pics of Cait and Tony when he proposed to her New Year's in Australia and her FRIENDS publicly congratulating them. There is NO getting around CAIT'S MOTHER talking on an Irish radio interview about Cait and Tony being engaged. She mentions Tony by name. There is NO getting around Cait herself showing off her engagement ring and acknowledging her engagement when she was on the red carpet for the Golden Globes. There is NO getting around Cait kissing Tony on the lips and then mentioning Tony by name when thanking him at one of the awards show when she won. There is NO getting around the church announcement at St. Mary's Church in Bruton, Somerset, England that the church was booked for the wedding for A. McGill (Anthony aka Tony). And then ALL of Cait's family and friends posting on Instagram FROM Bruton at her wedding. There is NO getting around fans paying for Cait and Tony's MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE from the official UK government marriage license website. The official legal document clearly shows Caitriona Mary Balfe marrying Anthony (Tony) Gerard McGill on August 10, 2019. Both their fathers names are in it. There is NO getting around Cait herself announcing the birth of her one and only son in August 2021. Those are indisputable FACTS.

If you want to say the HUNDREDS of Cait and Tony sightings, pics, and confirmation by family, friends, fans, costars stating that Cait and Tony are a couple, and Cait and Sam are not, can be explained away. Fine, but you CANNOT explain away official church announcements, legal documents, Cait herself telling you, and God help anyone who would be dumb enough to DARE say Cait's mother was lying about Cait and Tony being engaged. The Irish are tough people and no one messes with an Irish mum.

Anon, as for everyone has different opinions and have access to different "facts." There is ONLY ONE FACT/TRUTH. Cait and Tony are married and there is a legal document from the UK government public registrar that PROVES that. You can have an OPINION about this FACT. But you cannot say that "fact" is in dispute. FACTS are by their very definition factual, truthful. The FACT is Cait and Tony are married. Your opinion can be that you don't like them being married. But you can't dispute that they are indeed married.

If after ALL the proof, including the legal document, you don't believe they are actually married, or you have your doubts, then you are not using your full mental faculties. I'm sorry to be so blunt. But there's no sugar coating it. Any rational, reasonable, logical person with a fully functioning brain cannot be faced with a marriage certificate from the UK registrar (a copy that MANY fans were able to order and pay for) and then say it's fake. The ONLY ones trying to convince people that it's fake are Extreme Shippers. Literally the only ones. The rest of us accept REALITY.

I do appreciate you wanting to be kind and asking for kindness in return. The thing is it's difficult for me to be kind to Extreme Shippers who have made MY life hell for the last 9 years. And have also attacked and harassed Cait, Sam, Tony, any woman associated with Sam, Diana Gabaldon, any cast, crew, family, friends, and any fan who got in the way of the Sam Cait ship. In summary, the FACTS and ONE AND ONLY TRUTH is Cait is married to Tony and they have one son together. Why would I entertain talking about anything that isn't THE TRUTH with people who literally tried to ruin my life and other peoples' lives? If they want to still sell their LIES to unsuspecting new fans, that's on them, but I'm not going to dialogue with terrorists. Their only goal is destruction. And there's no room for discourse or civility when that's the case. And make not mistake, that IS the case.

Context! Bittersweet & Strange is my Solavelyan BatB AU that I wrote in October, and it's right over here. And the ask meme this is from is right here!

5(+) Headcanons for B & S (which got long so they're under a read more oops)

Hospitality and Temperance (this fic's version of Lumiere and Cogsworth) have backstories I wasn't able to work into the fic as-is -- or rather, the ancient elves they're reflections of -- were both close to Solas before he put up the Veil.

Hospitality was the original steward of Skyhold and lived there from the day it was built to the day he died - which was a few decades after the Veil came down. He eventually died of old age (one of the first elves to do so), and his remains were found and buried by the next inhabitants of the fortress.

Temperance was an archivist named Elia, a "neutral" recorder of history who lived in the Shattered Library before it was, you know, shattered. Elia had an affinity with wolves, and the spirits who helped her in the library usually took lupine form while doing it. Solas was infatuated with her when they were both very young (in elfy terms), and Elia... was not terribly interested in him. At the time, Solas was cocky, hotheaded, impulsive, and had a reputation for playing a little fast and loose with his conquests. Worse, Elia had been in charge of recording his exploits for a while by then and found his meddling to be obnoxious and a nuisance.

See, as an archivist, part of her job as well as personal philosophy was that of neutrality, and even from the start, Solas was a troublemaker with strong opinions about everything. And Elia wouldn't let him near her until he demonstrated that he was interested in her as a person and not just trying to get into her pants. Solas ended up shapeshifting into a wolf and living for a while among the spirits who worked beside her. After a year in her service, Solas revealed himself and admitted that, while he continued to disagree with her on principle, he understood and appreciated Elia's perspectives and dedication to her work.

They were on and off for basically forever, even marrying and divorcing a handful of times. In the war between Fen'Harel and the Evanuris, Elia tried to maintain her neutrality. Late in the conflict, however, she realized that the Library's supposed "neutrality" actually meant de facto siding with the Evanuris, and fully sided with the Dread Wolf's rebellion. She eventually died in Skyhold when the Veil went up, the trauma of the spell too great to survive.

There isn't really reincarnation in this situation, but like a spirit's energy being scattered and reconstituting in the future, some of Elia's soul managed to survive the ages. In Bittersweet & Strange, she was (partly) reborn as a young elf named Eala who's currently living in the shape of a wolf, and is likely to remain so if she isn't found -- but in another life, things go very different for Solas and Eala Lavellan.

Outlander is my most middle-aged-mom favorite show, and I use a bunch of members of the cast for faceclaims for my DA characters. Eva Trevelyan is Caitriona Balfe (and was actually originally named Claire when I was initially making her), I have a male Hawke on my roster that I use Sam Heughan for, my female Hawke is named Marsali (Claire's apprentice in later seasons/books), and B&S's resident Gaston and perpetual villain in Thayet's backstory is Tobias Menzies.

In B&S, Eva and Drader don't have a ton of interaction because Eva never makes it into a Circle. In regular Inquisition continuities, she usually avoids him entirely because she's sent to Monstimmard, since Thayet is there as a Templar and it's a big conflict of interest. But in a campaign where Eva becomes Inquisitor and is raised in the Ostwick Circle instead, she's taken in immediately after Thayet leaves the Circle in a rather dramatic and violent way, leaving Eva basically alone to weather the bad taste Thayet left in Drader's mouth.

So when Eva is Inquisitor, Drader is still the Backstory Big Bad, but it's much less the story about intrigue and mage resistance that it is when Thayet, Ramsay, and their First Enchanter are around, and much more about survival and religious abuse.

Although, funny enough, Eva and Drader having "matching" faceclaims and this contentious dynamic developed separately.

The whole cast of B&S spends time in Tevinter immediately after the story. Where Thayet and Solas move on pretty quickly on their quest to ~see the world~, Eva and Locke stay as Dorian's guests for much longer. It takes a while and a bunch of irritated letters, but their father eventually decides to make this situation useful and puts Locke to work in the Tevinter branch of the family's shipping company. Eva ends up learning magic from a series of tutors in Tevinter; the Circles there are intensely competitive and almost impossible to get into if you're not a citizen or a foreigner with very wealthy Tevinter relatives. Dorian's parents continue to host them for their entire time in Tevinter, and Aquinea (Dorian's mother) actually warms up to Eva and gradually steps in as a maternal figure.

Thayet drops her surname except for when she's visiting family or dealing with nobility. Most people who meet her have no idea who she is, and she prefers it that way.

Solas has a bitch of a time sleeping like a normal person after being basically "conscious" and lucid dreaming for so long. He has no regular circadian rhythm whatsoever and naps constantly because he doesn't totally know how to judge his own levels of fatigue.

Bonus! Thayet has the scars in her shoulders, of course, but the scar on Solas's heart from being run through only appears on his astral body or in dreams.

During S6 primo didn't Sam and Caitriona say there was some debate about releasing 8 or 10 eps and then it was decided on 8? Asking because it seems ep2 was a final ep of a season and ep 3 appears as a premier ep of a season. If you have info on this interview, would appreciate any reference to go back and review. You appear to have a good log of interviews and sources. TIA.

Season 6 was supposed to have 12 episodes but then was cut down to 8 (due to covid... and other issues 😉)

I don't know, but do think they sort of packed all storylines of S6 that needed to be wrapped up in 2 episodes. The Christie story was shortened imo. Originally they could have intended to spread it out over 4 episodes.

I haven't seen ep 3 yet.
