Proud Boys Leader Arrested, Accused of Burning Church Banner
WASHINGTON (AP) — Police in the nation’s capital on Monday arrested the leader of the Proud Boys, who is accused of burning a Black Lives Matter banner that was torn down from a historic Black church in downtown Washington last month.

How did a Proud Boys leader with a felony record get into the White House?
Enrique Tarrio claims he visited the White House on Saturday, hours before a major pro-Trump rally
By Roger Sollenberger   December 15, 2020
The chairman of the white nationalist Proud Boys group, a convicted felon, posted photos from inside the White House gates ahead of a violent pro-Trump rally in Washington DC on Saturday, raising new questions about the president's apparent embrace of the right-wing agitators.
Enrique Tarrio revealed that he visited the executive mansion on Saturday after receiving a "last-minute invite to an undisclosed location."
The White House later said that Tarrio had not been invited, but had instead taken part in a holiday tour. "He was on a public White House Christmas tour," White House spokesperson Judd Deere said over the weekend. "He did not have a meeting with the president, nor did the White House invite him."
Tumblr media
White House public tours are self-guided, and anyone who wants one, including Christmas tours, must apply no fewer than 21 days ahead of their booking date because the application includes a security form and background check. Hopefuls with a felony are generally denied, a former Trump White House official told Salon, unless a senior member of the administration intervenes.
In 2013, Tarrio, also known as Henry Tarrio Jr, was convicted of two class C, one class D and one class E felonies for stealing and reselling $1.2 million worth of diabetes test strips from Abbott Labs, and served 16 months in federal prison. Court records show that he was released in December 2014 with two years probation, and ordered to pay restitution for the full $1.2 million.
On Saturday, Tarrio was accompanied to the executive mansion by other members of Latinos for Trump, including Bianca Garcia, the president of the group, and her son, Armani Garcia, a former intern for Rep. Jody Hice, R-Ga. It is unclear if or when Latinos for Trump applied for its White House tour, and unclear why Tarrio received a security pass.
People with prior convictions who are able to gain entry are generally given special badges and personal escorts.  It would be highly unusual for someone with Tarrio's criminal history to get inside the White House without someone high up in the administration personally pulling strings, according to the former White House official.
A White House spokesperson declined to reply when asked who had checked Tarrio in on Saturday: The East Wing, where visitors usually enter, or the Executive Office of the President.
During the first presidential debate in September, Trump had the opportunity to denounce white supremacists and violent far-right groups — specifically, Democratic opponent Joe Biden invited him to condemn The Proud Boys. Trump did not denounce the group but told them "stand back and stand by," a directive that the group took as an endorsement. The Proud Boys Telegram account wrote, "standing down and standing by sir." Another known account incorporated a version of the phrase — "Stand back. Stand by" — into a new group logo.
"I think this 'stand back, stand by' thing will be another Proud Boy saying," Tarrio told The Daily Beast. (The Beast pointed out that previous slogans were: "The West Is the Best," and the warning "F*ck Around and Find Out.")
Trump eventually condemned the group in a Fox News interview two days later but he also claimed he knew "almost nothing" about them. "I condemn the Proud Boys," Trump said. "I don't know much about the Proud Boys, almost nothing, but I condemn that."
The Proud Boys self-identify as "Western chauvinists," but deny being part of the racist alt-right. Members claim they are instead simply a men's group that promotes an "anti-political correctness" and "anti-white guilt" ideology, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center.
Tumblr media
On his 2020 Ballotpedia candidate questionnaire, Tarrio cited as his favorite book Pat Buchanan's 2001 "The Death of the West: How Dying Populations and Immigrant Invasions Imperil Our Country and Civilization."
"This book shows the growing problems and divide in our country," Tarrio wrote. "It allows me to learn how to find solutions to conserve our nation and restore the love we have for it. We are not a perfect nation, but we must strive everyday to get as close to perfection as possible."
The group's initiation process demands aspirants to, among other things, denounce masturbation and recite five brands of breakfast cereal while fighting off an attack from other members. The final requirement for membership involves "a major fight for the cause," founder Gavin McInnes told Metro.us in a 2017 interview.
"You get beat up, kick the crap out of an antifa" and possibly get arrested, McInnes explained.
"Their disavowals of bigotry are belied by their actions," the SPLC says on its profile of the group. "Rank-and-file Proud Boys and leaders regularly spout white nationalist memes and maintain affiliations with known extremists. They are known for anti-Muslim and misogynistic rhetoric."
The Proud Boys also have ties to longtime Trump associate and convicted felon Roger Stone, and they are open about its support for the outgoing president. Another leader, Joe Biggs, boasted last year that he was having dinner with Trump at the president's D.C. hotel, and shared a picture of himself seated beside Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C. Trump's official schedule that evening included "remarks at a fundraising committee reception" at Trump International Hotel at 8:00 PM. Tarrio's Saturday visit coincided with a rally in the nation's capital where thousands of right-wing protesters, including several hundred Proud Boys, a number of them dressed in tactical vests and fatigues, took to the streets to protest Trump's election defeat.
Tumblr media
This January, Tarrio launched his ill-fated congressional campaign with a launch party at Trump National Doral in Miami on Jan. 25. (Tarrio had to accept Roger Stone's endorsement in absentia that evening, as the Trump confidant had been arrested that morning.) About 300 people attended the event, which caught the tail end of the Republican National Committee's winter meeting and ended with fireworks.
However, his campaign's finance records do not indicate any payments on the night other than a $900 expense on Jan. 27 to Trump's BLT Prime restaurant in Washington, D.C. (There is a BLT Prime at Trump's Doral club as well.) Tarrio later bragged that "We exceeded our expectation by three-fold with 250+ in the building."
A White House spokesperson referred Salon's questions about security checks to the U.S. Secret Service. The Secret Service did not reply to multiple requests for comment.

POSITIVE SPINS: NEW ARTISTS, NEW ALBUMS, AND NEW LIVE STREAMS THAT PUT OUR 2020 ON A BETTER TRACK
2020 proved to be one of the hardest years we have collectively gone through.  While we didn’t have live music to lean on when times got tough, these are the albums, artists and livestreams that got us through the rough patches and will carry us into a brighter 2021.
Listen to our playlist of Positive Spins!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
BEST NEW ARTISTS OF 2020 (in no particular order)
THICK
“Brooklyn-based pop-punk three-piece, THICK, are not afraid to say (or sing) what’s on everyone’s mind - with a fierceness and confidence I can only aspire to assume. Sticking it to the establishment is the name of their game - take “Mainsplain,” for instance - and they manage to do so with catchy chord progressions and an uplifting vigor. I can’t wait to see what’s next for the trio, and who else they’ll put in check.” - S. D.
Ela Minus
“Brooklyn-based techno-pop artist Ela Minus broke onto the scene this year with her debut album “ acts of rebellion.” The Colombian-born musician has a background in emo bands, is a trained jazz drummer, and she wrote, produced, engineered, and recorded the album on her own. “acts of rebellion” is moody and sultry, while still making you want to grab your friends and dance.” - K. C.
Arlo Parks
“Without even having released her debut album yet, Arlo Parks has made a name for herself this year. Singles released throughout the year, paired with 2019’s EP ‘Sophie’ and her slot as support on Hayley Williams’ (cancelled) tour have boosted Arlo to a new level this year, that we can only assume will continue to rise in 2021 when her debut album drops.” - K. C.
Beabadoobee
“Beabadoobee’s interesting name is only matched by her sound - bedroom-pop fused with nineties indie-rock, tinged with a tender, DIY aesthetic. Her track “If You Want To” will have you singing along, while her single “She Plays Bass” will take you back to your hormonal, vulnerable, teenage years met with sublime nostalgia. She’s without a doubt a silver lining in 2020.” - S. D.
BENEE
“I first saw Auckland’s BENEE at Rough Trade in October of last year - her sincere, to-the-point lyrics and quirky hooks instantly hooked me. You may know her track, “Supalonely,” which found popularity on TikTok during the height of lockdown, but BENEE’s sound isn’t limited to the confines of one social media trend. In her debut album released this year, BENEE displays an uncanny ability to tackle alt-rock, hip-hop and electro-pop all at the same time, in an unbothered, endearing way - making her a “one to watch” in 2020 and beyond.” - S. D.
Christian Lee Hutson
There isn’t a lack of acoustic singer-songwriters out there, but Christian Lee Hutson is an important new voice. Hutson first full length album, “Beginners,” released this year, has a warm and honest quality to it. The production is subtle (thanks to producer Phoebe Bridgers), and so perfectly complements a simple, acoustic narrative. The result is a soulful, beautiful, and special work of music. - S. D.
Do Nothing
“2020 newcomers out of Nottingham, UK, Do Nothing have already made a big splash in the post-punk world. Releasing their first EP, Zero Dollar Bill, earlier this year, the band have been compared to Idles and are setting out on a similar path of success. Upon first hearing their earlier single Lebron James, countless fans are sure to be sucked into the world of Do Nothing.” - K. C.
Kate Bollinger
“I first listened to Kate Bollinger when she released I Don’t Wanna Lose in 2019. I played the track Candy on repeat all year long. It has been so lovely to watch her grow into the artist she is today. This year she released an EP called A word becomes a sound, which quickly became one of my favorite releases of 2020. Her voice is so comforting. Whenever I listen, I feel like I am being coddled in a fluffy blanket with a cup of herbal tea and nothing could go wrong at that moment. I can’t wait to see what Kate has planned for 2021 and beyond!” - L. S.
SAULT
“After a year of intense racial unrest in the United States, SAULT’s importance is more significant now than ever.  With themes focusing around the Black Lives matter movement, this mystery soul-funk group has become more than buzzy in the music scene, and has earned a spot on tons of year end lists.” - K. C.
Sorry
“London-based genre-defying band Sorry released their debut album ‘925’ this year, produced by James Dring (Gorillaz, Jamie T) which is already reason enough to pique the interest of most. The album certainly does not disappoint, with each song giving you a different taste of the many interesting sides of this up-and-coming group.” - K. C.

BEST NEW ALBUMS OF 2020 (in no particular order)
Fiona Apple – Fetch the Bolt Cutters
“Fiona Apple is fearless in this album. The song structures and sounds take you on a listening experience I can only describe as emotional in the best way. Eight years of waiting was totally worth it.“ - S. D.
Fleet Foxes – Shore
“This album had been bright spot in a difficult year. St. Ann’s Church was the perfect location for their Colbert performance of Can I Believe You and the live stream will be the perfect holiday present. Ready to feel all the feels!” - K. A.
Khruangbin - Mordechai
“Khruangbin is one of my go-to bands, and “Mordechai” has been heavy in my rotation in 2020. It’s really a great album – I play it cover-to-cover and pairs well with a cocktail and cooking at home, infusing some needed spice and energy in what could otherwise be ‘just another night’ during a long, monotonous several months.” - C.M.
Moses Sumney - Græ
“The highly anticipated second album from Moses Sumney, shows us more of the highly personal, raw and emotionally moving music we have some to expect from him. The cluster of emotions that Moses works through with his beautifully unique voice in this 20 song album give us a look into the complicated mind of one of the most interesting artists of the last 5 years.” - K. C.
Perfume Genius – Set My Heart On Fire Immediately
“*Bill Hader’s Stefan voice* this album has everything! From the heavy and distorted bass on “Describe” to the melodic harp stringing of “Leave,” to the dance ballad (is that a thing?) “On The Floor,” Perfume Genius’ album Set My Heart on Fire Immediately really does have it all. Each song feels vastly different from the next in tone, instrumentation, and influence – yet they all come together so perfectly to make this stunning album, all while showcasing his vocal depth and range. There’s a reason he’s called Perfume *Genius*, and that is because Mike Hadreas can take familiar feelings and turn them into unconventional pop ballads that feel both relatable, but new and exciting at the same time.” - R. E.
Phoebe Bridgers – Punisher
“How does Phoebe do it? (a question I ask myself daily). I remember waking up on June 18 as if it was my birthday. Punisher is everything I hoped for and then some more. The last song on the album, “I know The End” concludes with a scream which is the perfect cherry on top to this masterpiece. This album is a rollercoaster of Phoebe’s emotions and I feel blessed to be along for the ride. It is relatable, heartfelt and honest. Thank you to Phoebe for this gift. The world will never be the same after this.” - L. S.
Rina Sawayama - SAWAYAMA
“SAWAYAMA is the early 2000s pop resurgence we didn’t know we needed, mixed with all the best parts of nu-metal. Rina Sawayama uses catchy pop hooks reminiscent of early Britney Spears, and pairs them with heavy guitar riffs to give us arguably the most fun album of 2020 that we cannot wait to experience live.” - K. C.
Tame Impala – The Slow Rush
Thundercat - It Is What It Is
“I love how this album embraces the darkness while managing to find the light in despair - it seems to acutely reflect the times we are in yet is simultaneously so personal to Bruner. The lyrics are set against a backdrop of funk, electronica, jazz, and soul, so there’s a little something for everybody.” - S. D.
Waxahatchee - Saint Cloud
“This album was released early in quarantine, and was the perfect musical escape during some of the toughest days. The imagery and reflection of the lyrics are why Saint Cloud tops my list of albums of 2020.” - J. F.
Honorable Mentions: The Beths – Jump Rope Gazers Fontaines DC - A Heros Dream Kevin Morby – Sundowner Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit – Reunions My Morning Jacket - The Waterfall II CHIKA - Industry Games Megan Thee Stallion - Suga Christian Lee Hutson- Beginners Idles- Ultra Mono Sturgill Simpson - Cuttin Grass Pup - This Place Sucks Ass Futurebirds- Teamwork Adrianne Lenker – Songs / Instrumentals Tom Misch, Yussef Dayes - What Kinda Music + the bonus tracks EP Some Kind Of Peace – Olafur Arnalds Tyler Bryant and the Shakedown - Pressure Josh Ritter - See Here, I Have Built You a Mansion Sahara Moon - Worthy Local H - Lifers Deep Purple - Whoosh! TOP TEN LIVESTREAMS 2020 (in no particular order)
Christine & The Queens (Live on KEXP at Home)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3bavZe47um4
“Live on KEXP at Home” was home to some of my favorite quarantine livestreams, and this one did anything but disappoint. Not only does Chris, aka Christine & The Queens, perform, but interviews are woven throughout the livestream. The drama of her performances, juxtaposed with her witty and humorous banter with the interviewer was such a breath of fresh air. If you’re a fan of Chris, this is a must watch.“ - S. D.
Courtney Barnett and Lucius & Friends: Live From Our Lounge Rooms with Sheryl Crow, 3/25/20
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xbfRbw3o1jU
“This was a gift that kept on giving. The stream started off with Courtney Barnett and Lucius in matching pajamas. I truly thought it could not get any better but I was in for a treat! The stream included performances by Nathaniel Rateliff, Sheryl Crow, Sharon Van Etten, Waxahatchee, Kevin Morby and more. I can safely say this was my favorite live stream I watched in 2020.” - L. S.
Julien Baker, Themfest Instagram Livestream, 4/16/20
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tINSbY4wRjs
“Recorded for Themfest during the early days of quarantine, Julien Baker’s in-home livestream was a welcome respite from the Cuomo briefings and general despair of mid April. Just kidding, Julien Baker is the queen of Sad Shit and I certainly didn’t tune into this livestream expecting a mood boost. But if you subscribe to the “sad songs make me feel better” aesthetic purveyed by our sweet little siren, this moody, intimate shot-on-iphone set will scratch that itch. But let’s not fool ourselves, nothing will ever replace the feeling of holding your breath along with 1,799 others at Brooklyn Steel while JB rips your heart out, in a nice way.” - E. M.
Kurt Vile, Love From Philly Livestream, 5/3/20 (covers John Prine’s “Sam Stone” near the end)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pjKG-7d5loY&feature=emb_logo - Jared
“Back in May, Kurt Vile took to his basement for a solo acoustic stream to benefit 30 Amp Circuit, a non-profit dedicated to support the health, wellness, and professional needs of Philadelphia-based musicians and artists. The intimate 3-song set rounded out with a special tribute to the late John Prine, as Kurt did his own rendition of “Sam Stone.”” - J. D.
Radiohead, In Rainbows - From The Basement, 6/4/20
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sWqDIZxO-nU
“This is the one die hard Radiohead fans have been waiting for. This session originally from 2008 existed in some pretty esoteric places and has been almost impossible to find – until now.” - G. A.
Sturgill Simpson, Live at The Ryman Auditorium, 6/5/20
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kO73im4J2sU
“2020 was supposed to be a banner year for Sturgill, until he got COVID-19 in April. He’s ok now, but something about this performance in the sacred church of country music The Ryman, hits different.” - G. A.
Haim - Women in Music PT. III Live Show, 6/25/20
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_eJU6X3_jQ
“I love pretty much everything the Haim sisters do - so much so that I aspire to be a sister myself. When I was feeling those very familiar mid-pandemic blues, their “Women in Music PT III” livestream, which celebrated their new album of the same name, was the exact pick me up that I needed. For the first time since March, the 30 minute set made me feel as if I was at an intimate gathering - rather than behind a computer watching a YouTube video along with thousands of others. The stream will have you grooving, laughing, and you may even want to be a Haim sister yourself.” - S. D.
Nilufer Yanya, Boiler Room: Streaming From Isolation with Night Dreamer & Worldwide FM, 6/28/20
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kAaAicIJE7s
“Hauntingly beautiful and yet also somehow grounded, Nilufer Yanya’s June livestream was a special one to watch. It makes the case for how intimate an artist’s performance can be, even virtually.” - G. A.
Brittany Howard, Live From Ryman Auditorium, 10/17/20
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zLH59WLQbZo
“Watching Brittany Howard and her incredible band rip through a set on the Ryman stage like no one and everyone was watching all at once was cathartic. The combination of such a singular artist and historic venue hit a similar nerve to seeing an artist you’re excited about play a show in the flesh with people you love – not an easy feat!” - M. L.
Tkay Maidza - Live on KEXP at Home, 11/3/20
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iPJgrDvyRbw
“13 minutes and 11 seconds of pure energy. This livestream is the moment we’ve all been waiting for, and, in my opinion, showcases Maidza as the star that she is. A must-watch if you’re looking for a refreshing and colorful approach to hip-hop.“ - S. D.

Back When YouTube Superstardom Simply Required A Giant Earthbound Cartridge Costume
So yeah, Christmas is here, which also means that New Year is just around the corner… thank God.
Considering how have happy memories from the year 2017 is so few and far between, how about one from 2007? Back when being a viral sensation on YouTube simply involved rapping in the middle of a parking lot, while dressed upon as an Earthbound cart.
Ah, such innocent times. How they are sorely missed.
Back to the here and now; this particular holiday is all about coming together, even if it means putting aside our differences, with the hope that some form of common ground can be found. Which in turn may become a basis of a long-lasting relationship.
That’s basically the message I get from this old Rez ad, circa 2001; the PS2 version was their first third party release (via shmups)…

Speaking of the Dreamcast; that recently posted concept video for a third Jet Set Radio that never materialized has gotten me to revisit the original (via kazucrash)…

Here’s a JSR illustration that’s totally new to me (and I’d like that I’ve seen every last bit of officially imagery, though I will admit that I haven’t dug as a deep a hole as I have for Gradius; via sixteen-bit), so perhaps it’s new to you as well?

Another game that deep dives into Japanese urban youth culture is The World Ends With You, and syncopatedid tried doing a side-by-side comparison of the in-game locales with their IRL counterparts not long after the release. There was a two year difference, so not that much had changed…

Though back to the streets of Japan… well, more like the rooftops… and back to the Dreamcast; here we have my fave part of Project Justice (via kazucrash once again)…

Back to the Dreamcast once more; I for one could not have been more disappointed with its version of KOF 99, due to its polygonal backgrounds. Cuz but as kazucrash demonstrates (oddly enough, given his super positive portrayal of the DC), the sprite work was positively insane…

At the end of the day, when all is said and done, no matter how cute the denizens of Animal Crossing might be, they are still filthy animals (via hellomathieu)…
Tumblr media
Whereas Kat from Gravity Rush manages to make her dwelling, which is down in the filthy sewer, not only clean & tidy, but also cosy & appealing (as evayoblog also notes)…
Tumblr media
If the following gif from prostheticknowledge doesn’t convince you to contribute to their Patreon, then I don’t know what else to say…
Tumblr media
You know, it just dawned on me that the Super Fami driven cover of Last Christmas that I posted… well, last Christmas… was published the day before George Michaels’s death…
youtube
Which ride do you prefer? This super deluxe Ridge Racer set-up (via peazy86)…
Tumblr media
Or this truck with the Legend of Zelda inspired paint job plus mud flaps (via retrogamerblog)…
Tumblr media
So yeah, I never really gave Final Fantasy 7 much of fair shake. Was never all that interested to be honest. That was, until I saw these gifs (via ethernalium)…
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I will never pass the opportunity to post video game related Archie image (via arcadezen)…
Tumblr media
2017 will always be the year that finally gave us a Goemon & Ebisumaru X Beavis & Butt-Head (via midnitesurprise)…
Tumblr media
Time for yet another friendly reminder to jump on that Fire Pro train if you haven’t done so already (via shadgandel)…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And time for yet another friendly reminder of bat-sh*t bonkers professional wrestling was during the late 90s (via n64thstreet)…
Tumblr media
It may not play nearly as well as the games it helped to pave the way for, yet the importance of Pro Wrestling for the Famicom cannot be overstated. At least its commercial has aged like fine wine (via charliecoffin yet again)…
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And back to shmups; this holiday season I made a bunch of RetroPies for a client, so he could give them away as Christmas presents (since SNES Classics are still in short supply). And the one game I try out first is MUSHA
Tumblr media
Though I will also play some other game at random, which is how I recently came across Majyūō: King of Demons. It’s definitely recommended (via bizarrobrain)…
Tumblr media
titleknown asks: “So, FromSoftware Muppet game when?”
Tumblr media
As part of my continued effort to play something Christmas related this time of year, something other than Christmas NiGHTS, I finally have something new! And yes, am late to the Boogie Wings party, but I guess that’s what I get for not following games-are-art closely…
youtube
For those of you reading this who are still in the midst of holiday travel, I have to ask: see anything comparable this (via geekybasket)?
Tumblr media
If you happened to get a Wacom tablet this year, and you also have a copy of Okami HD, a FYI (via goldenserker)…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, if you didn’t get what you wanted, you can always hunt whatever down on eBay, Though I recommend Japanese sellers only; aside from the fact that their used games are on par with factory fresh here in the US, they’e also super friendly and will often include handwritten notes plus other goodies (via tangobunny)…
Tumblr media
But if you do get something, and I’m talking about a game that’s on a cartridge, I would recommend not blowing on it. Unless you live in a post nuclear wasteland, where there’s sand everywhere, like in the world of Hokuto no Ken/Fist of the North Star (via charliecoffin one last time)…
Tumblr media
And if you happened to have gotten every game you wanted, great! Just don’t over do it (via relatablepicturesoflisasimpson)…
Tumblr media
I began this post with an Earthbound/Mother related vid, and I may as well end with one as well. Take it away SilvaGunner…
youtube
[UPDATE: 12/25/17] Alright, it’s 11:15PM EST, which means less than an hour to go before Xmas ‘17 is finally done & over with. But this other SiIvaGunner Christmas medley is simply too damn good to sit on till Xmas ‘18…
youtube
Don’t forget: Attract Mode is now on Medium! There you can subscribe to keep up to date, as well as enjoy some “best of” content you might have missed the first time around, plus be spared of the technical issues that’s starting to overtake Tumblr.

Happy New Year!  As 2017 comes to a close, 2018 just seems full of promise.  I’ve rounded off my year of reading and am looking forward to sticking to my resolutions and making this space even better for you guys.  Let’s take a look at the last reading round-up of 2017.  Spoiler alert: it was a good month!
  Books I read
The Naked Sun by Isaac Asimov
Turtles All the Way Down by John Green
The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie
The Girl in the Tower by Katherine Arden
The Selection by Kiera Cass
Batman: Nightwalker by Marie Lu
The Mystery in White by J. Jefferson Farjeon
I am Thunder by Muhammad Khan
And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie
The Silent Companions by Laura Purcell
Forest of a Thousand Lanterns by Julie C. Dao
I managed to read eleven books this month and surpass my reading goal for the year!  This was much helped by the fact that I read four books while home for the holidays.  This month featured books from a pretty wide range of genres. I covered classic sci-fi (The Naked Sun), classic crime fiction (The Murder of Roger Ackroyd), the Gothic (The Silent Companions), silly and trashy YA (The Selection), and contemporary YA (I Am Thunder).  I really enjoyed almost everything I read this month!  Even better, a number of these books were from my local library.  I’m going to try to support them more as I continue to devour books for this blog.
I think my favourites of the month were The Naked Sun, I Am Thunder, and The Silent Companions.  Each book was just so good!  Keep an eye on the blog for reviews.
  Books I bought
Technically, I didn’t buy a single book!  However, I was lucky enough to get a TON of  books for Christmas.  We tend to do Christmas books in two waves in my family.  Of course, you get books under the tree.  Then, we head off to the bookshop shortly after Christmas and, well, go a bit mad. This is the opportunity to get anything that you didn’t receive under the tree or any new books that catch one’s fancy. I talked about this a little bit in one of my very first posts.
Forest of a Thousand Lanterns by Julie C. Dao Girls Made of Snow and Glass by Melissa Bashardoust The 4:50 from Paddington by Agatha Christie Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (illustrated) by J. K. Rowling and Jim Kay The Remains of the Day by Kazou Ishiguro The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood The Diviners by Libya Bray Murder in Mesopotamia by Agatha Christie The Robots of Dawn by Isaac Asimov The Lie Tree (illustrated edition) by Francis Harding and Chris Riddell I Am, I Am, I Am by Maggie O’Farrell (signed!) A Scanner Darkly by Philip K. Dick The Book of Dust by Philip Pullman Mythology by Stephen Fry Kings of the Wyld by Nicholas Eames The Age of Assassins by R. J. Barker Simon Versus the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertelli Astrophysics for People in a Hurry by Neil Degrasse Tyson Istanbul: A Tale of Three Cities by Bettany Hughes
As I said, that’s quite a few.  However, I did get a few books I’ve already read!  Prisoner of Azkaban, The Handmaid’s Tale, The Remains of the Day, and The Lie Tree are some of my all-time favourite books and I got special editions.  The Remains of the Day in particular is stunning — it’s one of my absolute favourite books and I’m so glad this beautiful edition was released!
Otherwise, well, I have a lot of reading to do.  I always aim to read all of my Christmas books before the next Christmas, however that never seems to happen.  I’m going to try this year!
  Book post
Batman: Nightwalker by Marie Lu
Everless by Sara Holland
Paris Adrift by E. J. Swift
The Belles by Dhonielle Clayton
I was lucky enough to receive some absolutely incredible book post this month!  Batman: Nightwalker is the second in the DC Icons series — Wonder Woman being the first.  I loved Warcross so much and was so thrilled to read a Batman novel by such a talented lady author.
Everless is the book from December’s FairyLoot box.  Not only is it an absolutely gorgeous book, it’s one I’ve been looking forward to for awhile!  I believe it releases here in the UK in January, so keep an eye out!
Paris Adrift is one of my current reads, and I’m absolutely loving it!  It’s such an incredibly cool time travel novel — I’m really intrigued.  I’ll be participating in a blog tour for this one, so watch this space!
Finally, The Belles.  The Belles!  This is one of my most highly anticipated books of 2018 and I cannot believe I got a copy of it.  It genuinely felt like Christmas came early.  I cannot wait to dive into this beautiful book, particularly with all the bullshit the author has had to face lately.
So that’s it for this month!  How was your December?  Did you get any books for the various holidays?  Let me know!
What I read in December (spoilers: a lot). December Reading Round-Up #bookbloggers Happy New Year!  As 2017 comes to a close, 2018 just seems full of promise.  I've rounded off my year of reading and am looking forward to…

It's a lot to consider and you're undoubtedly wondering which ones are actually worth it. Having tested many of these subscription box services ourselves, we're confident we can show you the best ones to gift your loved ones this season.
Read on to find our top picks for subscription box gifts this year.

BurgaBox
HelloFresh
If Argentine Chimichurri Steak, Butternut Squash and Sage Risotto, or Pork Luau Burgers sound right up your culinary alley, HelloFresh is the meal kit delivery service for you. While HelloFresh is our gift of choice because of its super fresh ingredients and recipes you'll love to recreate later, here are some other meal-subscription services you might want to consider that also have gift options available.
Buy a gift box: 3 meals for 2 people/$59.94, 3 meals for 4 people/$119.88

Daily Harvest
Daily Harvest sends healthy and delicious pre-portioned superfood eats like smoothies, overnight oats, chia parfaits, soups, and sundaes to your home. It's the stuff you overpay for at a health shop or store, but could easily make at home if you have the right ingredients. It solved our healthy eating obstacles, and it can do the same for you, too.
Buy a gift card: Values of $25 through $250 available

Mouth
Mouth's selection of indie spirits, snacks, sweets, and sauces are sure to surprise and delight the foodie in your life. Everything on the site is made lovingly by people who view food as their craft and passion. Many gift subscription options are available, including ones specific to whiskey, bourbon, and pickles. If you're not sure what to get, the Best of Mouth Club is a safe bet to go with.

Blue Bottle Coffee
Blue Bottle Coffee is beloved in the Bay Area and, for now, only has additional locations in New York, Los Angeles, Washington DC, Miami, and Tokyo. Thankfully, distance is no issue with the Blue Bottle at Home subscription service, which sends a half bag of a changing selection of whole bean coffee to your door every other week. Drinking coffee is such an everyday ritual, so the automatic, convenient nature of this service can't be cherished enough.
Buy a gift subscription: 3 months/$72, 6 months/$144; or create your own and choose the coffee, delivery frequency, and number of shipments starting at $24

Vinebox
Rather than give you full bottles of wine, Vinebox delivers wine by the glass, making it great for trying a bunch of different wines before you decide to commit. After you take a short wine preferences quiz, Vinebox will curate three kinds for you to try and send them to you in sleek tubes. Every wine comes with tasting notes, recommendations, and pairings.
Buy a gift subscription: 3 months/$81, 6 months/$156, 12 months/$300

Winc
Similar to Vinebox, you begin your Winc experience by taking a short quiz. The difference between Winc and Vinebox is that you get four full bottles of wine and you'll have some degree of control over what types you receive. Winc calls itself a "wine club" and is a better choice for more seasoned, frequent wine drinkers.
Buy a gift card: Values of $60 through $600 available

This Week in Content Marketing: Latest Content Marketing Spending Stats Hard to Believe
PNR: This Old Marketing with Joe Pulizzi and Robert Rose can be found on both iTunes and Stitcher. If you enjoy our show, we would love it if you would rate it or post a review on iTunes.
In this week’s episode
This week, Robert ponders the nature of “violent agreement.” We unpack the latest content marketing spending research – and debate whether or not we can actually believe it. Marketing predictions are back again, and we also discuss why Casper is putting Van Winkle’s to sleep. Our rants and raves include building an audience, Snapchat, and the art of questioning; then we close the show with an example of the week on the Maxwell House Haggadah.

The quick hits – Notable news and trends
(10:40): Content marketing industry to be worth $412 billion by 2021. (Source: The Drum)
(18:44): 2018 predictions from the C-suite. (Source: Forbes)
The deep dive – Industry analysis
(27:00): Mattress company shutters web publication, pivots to print. (Sources: The Wall Street Journal; Ryan Skinner)
Rants and raves
(42:26): Robert’s commentary: A wonderful Digiday post brought the concept of audience-based planning to Robert’s attention. The idea involves combining different data sets to drive more contextually relevant content and advertising to audiences. But Robert feels the article left out one of the most interesting aspects of this trend – namely, building your own audience.
(45:40): Robert’s rave: Robert has long raved about John Lewis’s annual holiday video ad for years; and its latest charmer, the Michel Gondry-directed Moz the Monster, continues the tradition. (Source: Adweek)
(46:46): Joe’s rave: In case you missed it, Snapchat released its results this week, and they were pretty devastating – revenue fell $30 million short, and user growth slowed to 2.9%. As detailed in an insightful TechCrunch post, the company has recognized many of its missteps, and is planning a major strategic flip-flop to right the ship. It’s worth a read for its discussion on when and why to pivot, alone.
(49:40): Joe’s commentary: Talk of determining when a pivot is necessary reminds me about the valuable art of questioning. To me, it seems that when we receive new information, particularly in marketing, our reactions typically fall into one of two categories: blind acceptance, or vehement rejection. I’d like to remind everyone out there that there’s a third course of action we should follow: Stop and question the information. Ask questions to help you understand the context, its drivers, and its possible implications, then make your informed evaluations of the information’s value and validity.
This Old Marketing example of the week
(54:15): Maxwell House Haggadah: If you’ve attended a Passover Seder at any time in the past 80 years, you’ve probably come across the Maxwell House Haggadah. As detailed in this Forward article, this iconic content effort owes its existence to Joseph Jacobs, a former advertising manager who started his own ad agency (in 1919) which specialized in selling ads for Jewish publications. In 1923, Jacobs convinced Maxwell House Coffee to invest in an advertising campaign targeting Jewish consumers. Though the coffee bean was once considered a legume, which would not be considered kosher for the chametz-free holiday, Jacobs lobbied an obscure Rabbi in New York to certify that it was technically a fruit, and thus would be acceptable to consume. With certification in hand, the Haggadah was first published in 1933, and was distributed for free to grocery store customers who purchased a can of Maxwell House coffee. It has been a mainstay in Passover-observing households ever since, and was even the guest of honor at President Obama’s Seder at the White House, making it an example of This Old Marketing that’s good to the last drop.
