Mounted Deer Symbolism: Ties to Memories?
I’ve been thinking about this shot lately—
Tumblr media
—and have pondered on the mounted deer head behind Will.
First we have Mike and Will standing side by side, perfectly in line with a window behind each of their heads. Mike’s window is illuminated by bright yellow sunlight, while through Will’s we see greenery. Mike’s jacket arrow is, of course, pointing toward Will. Will is wearing blue and yellow in his plaid shirt, while Mike is not. The combined colors are on Will’s side, shown through his window. Mike’s isn’t green but it’s shining with yellow sun, the additional color he needs. His heart points toward the combined colors—toward Will and himself.
But there’s that mounted deer head behind Will, unlit and similarly colored to the walls but not hidden. You could say it’s a symbol of a successful hunt, a trophy. It makes sense in knowing Vecna wants Will. He’s valuable to him, perhaps a prize to be taken in the grand scheme of things regarding his plans for the world and what Will could do for those plans. This could be a symbol of Vecna’s interference with Will and Mike’s relationship/bond. Just like the reoccurring JAWS poster appearing behind Mike during his heart-to-hearts with Will, a motif for Vecna’s spying and targeting Mike (for his bond with Will and overall interference), the mounted deer may be looming behind Will in this shot as a reminder that Vecna has a target on Will—like he always has. Only, as of now, it’s to be in possession of Will rather than to be rid of him (in contrast of the way Vecna wants to be rid of Mike).
So there’s Will and Mike, their associated colors mingling and pointing toward togetherness, but Vecna is there and wants Mike separated from his sought-after ‘prize.’
However, there is another possible interpretation to add on to this. Many hunters view their taxidermic mounts as a symbol of preserved memories. For hunters, there is a story from the hunt and catch and whoever they may have been with. Therefore, typically, a sentimental object for reminiscing.
If we link this to Will and Vecna, this would be relevant to birthdaygate/ Vecna stealing parts of Will from his loved ones’ memories. The deer mount itself in-shot is not only behind Will but it’s face is also partially peeking into Will’s window, over the window’s yellow top curtain/valance. Furthermore, pointed directly at Will’s head! Vecna wants and needs Will. He doesn’t have him entirely in his clutches, but Vecna may already have parts of Will preserved and metaphorically mounted. This all applies to Vecna’s ever-persisting interference in Mike and Will’s bond as well, being as the deer is also peeking into the start of one of their heart-to-hearts.
-
UPDATE: @googoogagaeyes (thank you thank you!!) provided a GREAT reminder from s3. This same mounted deer head appears behind Will—directly behind and above Will—right after Mike declares he loves El and can’t lose her again. During a season Will feels so left behind/forgotten.

It’s so sweet that in Stranger Things Puzzle Tales whenever El has low health, ’Boyfriend’ will help her heal.
Except that it doesn’t. Instead the ’Boyfriend’ empowers 3 yellow dice.
I wonder what it means…

Wheeler/Byers Wardrobe Analysis
Season 1 Part 1
Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5
This has probably already been looked at in depth because hasn't everything? But I looked up potential tags that I’ll be using and didn’t see anything (without scrolling for a year), so forgive me if I’m repeating what’s already been said, but I'm new here (Hi. Hello). I’ve seen a lot about the Will/Mike/El color theory. What I haven’t really seen is colors assigned to other characters. So as I am starting a rewatch, I thought I’d take a look at the color palettes for other major characters and I noticed pretty immediately that there are trends, though it’s less about one assigned color than it is about color palettes and how they are worn. And these trends present themselves a lot in regards to an overall family aesthetic for both the Wheelers and the Byers. So they will be the major focus of this analysis, plus a few relevant others like Steve or El who have a heavy influence on members of these families.
So here’s the first shot of Nancy in the show. She’s in her bedroom (blue and pink pastels everywhere, blue pastel PJs, blue pastel phone)
Tumblr media
And here’s the first shot of Karen along with a shot of her and Holly the following morning. I found this really intriguing that right off the bat, we’re shown Karen dressing Holly in EXACTLY the same outfit she herself was wearing the day before. This really sets the trend for how the Wheelers are presented. Karen dresses Holly like herself and a lot of what Nancy wears emulates her mother.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nancy’s outfit that day once again consists of pastel blues and pinks, just like Karen’s, including a checkered element, just like Karen's. She’s also matching Barb (though Barb is in bolder shades, red versus pink) and Steve in pastel blue. Later that evening when Steve sneaks into her bedroom, Nancy is no longer wearing the pink sweater, wearing only the blue button down and matching Steve even more.
Tumblr media
And here is the whole family. Very pastel. Very aesthetic. Very nuclear. Except for Mike, wearing bold primary colors and stripes, as he often does. I’m not going to talk about Mike’s outfits much independently because so many people already have. But in comparison with the rest of the Wheelers, here we can clearly see that he contrasts. He is the outlier and the outcast. He’s the only member of the family not trying to conform (or in Holly’s case, being shaped to conform). Even their placemats match the color palette. But then look at Ted. He’s wearing clothes he probably wore to the office (what office? I don’t know. He seems to always be sitting around watching TV or complaining, but he does leave for work at some point, so…) All of the female Wheelers are matching in their blue and pink while Ted is lacking any color or personality whatsoever and Mike is popping out in his primary colors, though there’s also a lot of soft grey on his shirt that allows him to blend somewhat. Karen, we know, has settled in this marriage and Nancy, we know, is beginning to struggle with fitting in. She’s been a "good girl" her whole life and this really shows in the way she dresses in early season 1. She is a reflection of her mother.
And then here are the Byers. Brown, dark blue, dark green, beige, tan, denim, shearling, corduroy. These are trends for the Byers family. Muted earth tones and strong texture.
Tumblr media
EPISODE TWO
Tumblr media
We see Nancy and Barb coordinating again, this time Nancy in lavender and Barb in coral (both in delicate sweaters). I think it’s interesting that Barb wears bolder colors than Nancy. Her outfit from episode 1 and this one are both brighter than Nancy’s very pale ensembles. This seems to really demonstrate how much more confident Barb is in her social status than Nancy is. Barb knows who she is and who her friends are. She doesn’t care about being popular. In a way, Barb is a lot more like Mike and the party than Nancy. So Barb wears bolder colors. She’s not ashamed to be a labeled a nerd or a goody-two-shoes. Nancy has been shown to wear a lot of blue and pink, but here, she’s wearing the combination of the two in purple. Steve, throughout all four seasons, wears a lot of blue. I’m just starting this rewatch and closely looking into the wardrobe, but that is something I remember pretty easily. And here, Steve’s whole crew is all dressed in blue. Is the purple Nancy’s pink beginning to blend into Steve’s blue? Or is it Nancy’s own duality beginning to blur as her previously separate colors have merged into one? (or is it a sweater someone picked up and said “yup looks like Nancy”) I think it’s the second one. I think it has nothing to do with Steve, actually, and a lot more to do with Nancy figuring herself out because purple is a color I know Nancy wears again in later seasons as well (to be examined closer further down the line). Nancy in this scene is conflicted about whether or not to lie to her parents and go to a party with the popular kids on a weeknight, all very out of character for her, and she's still clinging to Barb, begging her to come along and trying to force these two crowds that don't mix together. Barb is in pink. Steve and co are in blue. Nancy is in the middle in purple. And like I said, I don't think this is so much ABOUT Steve as it is about who Nancy wants to be. She doesn't know.
Tumblr media
And then we come to that fateful party. Nancy changes her shirt in the car before they go to Steve’s house. She’s wearing bold red stripes, completely out of her usual color palette or style. The texture is different, the pattern is different, the colors are different. It’s not Nancy. And in a few episodes, Nancy tells Jonathan she and Barb went shopping for a shirt she thought Steve might like. It feels safe to assume this is the top.
I also want to note that Barb has not changed her clothes from earlier in the day, nor has Steve. But Barb is now wearing a blue jacket over her bright sweater. She doesn’t want to be at this party, but she came anyway for Nancy. She’s hanging out with people she doesn’t like and she’s now wearing the color they are all also wearing. Except for Nancy. Because she tried to pick out something Steve would like, but there’s a disconnect here. Nancy chose something red, a bolder variety of one of her usual colors, rather than something blue, Steve's usual color. This could be a way of demonstrating that Nancy doesn't actually know what Steve likes or wants (and the obvious that she's trying too hard).
Karen’s outfit in this episode is again very close to Nancy’s. It’s actually very similar to Nancy’s outfit from the last episode where Nancy wore a light blue button down with a pink cardigan. Here, Karen wears a light blue button down with a pink and grey sweater vest. And once again, Mike’s outfit contains a LOUD and nonconforming color palette.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Meanwhile, in this Byers flashback, Will is dressed in Byers colors, but he, like Mike, is also wearing pops of primary colors. Mike’s outfits have contained bright colors but also reflect, stylistically, the Wheelers. His shirts are preppier and he's wearing khaki pants here. Will is similarly reflecting his own family stylistically with a T-shirt and jeans, but brighter.
I also want to note that this (episode 2, the day after the party finds El) is the first time we see Mike in red. Mike and Will's shirts in this episode are actually really similar, both containing blue, yellow, white, and stripes. But the top portion of each of their shirts reflects the person they are seen interacting with most in the episode. For Mike, this is El. For Will, it's Jonathan. And I don't know if I can declare brown Jonathan's color, but he wears it a LOT.
This is long and it will only get longer as I continue this silly adventure, but I'm sharing my observations for fun.

This is gonna be complicated but I need you to stay with me
Ok so I’m pretty sure we all know about the byler color theory. But I want to add something to it, while we know that Mike and Will have the colors blue and yellow assigned to them I think it expends beyond just them. I think they’re not the only ones wearing certain colors as easter eggs. While I’m sure a lot of you saw "ketchup and mustard" I would still like to remind you.
Tumblr media
In this picture we clearly saw El as red and Max is also yellow, same as Will.
While the fact that Max and Will have the same color might be another easter egg it’s irrelevant to the theory I wanna talk about rn.
I know many people will be like "they just wore it in one scene that doesn’t mean anything" but the thing is, they didn’t.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I know this seems like a stretch but in these pictures they were bonding and becoming really close which would explain the swapped colors or the combination of both colors.
Now to my theory: I think everyone color of clothing in this show always represent something and here are examples.
Tumblr media
Here you can see Mike and Will each wearing their own color. Although Will’s shirt has some blue in it to represent his feeling for Mike.
Tumblr media
Here is a slightly more complicated one. Mike is wearing a purple shirt that shirt represents him and eleven, because blue and red make purple. Mike is reuniting with his girlfriend after a while of not seeing her and he’s looking forward to spend quality time with her. Now here’s where it gets tricky Mike is wearing a yellow shirt too that yellow shirt represents Will and their connection. Mike missed Will and while he himself wouldn’t admit it, just like he barely talked to Will while being away, his subconscious speaks for him like when he got mad at Will for the way he acted, and Will didn’t see it as anything weird he just continued to argue, but Mike was paying attention to Will that entire day. "You were rolling your eyes, you were moping, you were barely talking. You basically sabotaged the whole day." This shows just how Mike was caring and noticing Will even if it wasn’t his first priority to make sure Will was ok he still cared a lot. And Mike’s clothes in this scene weren’t the only ones speaking volumes. Will’s clothes for example are blue, Mike’s color which represents his feelings for him, and how much he wanted to spend the day with him since he had just arrived. El’s dress has blue, red and purple stripes. For her and Mike.
Tumblr media
In this photo both Mike and Eleven are wearing blue shirts. This is Mike’s color which means Mike was acting like his usual self. He was just being Mike. While El wanted to spend all her time with him.
Tumblr media
And this is why I made this post. Mike’s shirt is obviously mostly blue with yellow stripes in it and red stripes that are almost unnoticeable. This is also why I filmed my laptop because the red stripes weren’t showing in any picture I found of mike with this shirt. This shirt represents Mike, as blue with the shirt being mostly his color. And there are red stripes in there that are barely showing which I think represent and his faded and almost nonexistent feeling for El. And the bright yellow stripes say that while his feeling for El are almost not there his feeling for Will are growing and are stronger than ever. This is the scene where Mike is unable to tell El the words "I love you" and the reason is he doesn’t. Because this was the 3rd and last time Mike ever wore red. The other two times were also combined with both yellow and blue.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I hope you understood at least some of what I’m trying to say, thanks😘

i saw the photoset from the hill in a couple posts earlier and it got me thinking abt how in the closeups will's outfit has blue and yellow detailing, in theme with the palette of the scene (and byler ofc)
Tumblr media
and el's has pink, the only instance of it in the scene (also a dilute of red)
Tumblr media
but in the wide shot they look like the only 2 characters who aren't in blue, with el in pure white and will in a more muddied beige
Tumblr media
& how as a child during the period when he strongly paralleled will in both his life situation and actions henry creel wore beige (chequered, no less!!!), at odds with his whole family in blue
Tumblr media
and then as an adult when he was strongly paralleling el instead he wore pure white
Tumblr media
...with red accents

I’ve been messing around with screenshots in PS Express and I realized some interesting things about this shot specifically:
Tumblr media
Here is the unedited screenshot.
Now of course I wanted to check for the yellow and blue in this shot. It’s a bit subtle in the unedited version, but when I up the saturation for the yellow and blue tones you’ll notice that Will’s side is yellow and Mike’s is blue.
Tumblr media
With the yellow pulled up and teal pulled down
Tumblr media
With the yellow pulled down and the teal pulled up.
Admittedly there is a lot more teal than blue, which is interesting considering that teal is closer to green. There is actually a lot of green in this shot as well, here is the image with the saturation pulled all the way up which really emphasizes all of the green.
Tumblr media
What was also interesting to me was just how much Will was in the light and Mike was in the dark, and how their costumes contribute to that. Will is dressed in light colors, while Mike’s black pants specifically really brings him into the shadows a lot more.
Tumblr media
Here’s what it looks like when I crushed the blacks. Will is still pretty visible while Mike is almost completely lost.
Just thought this was a fun little study. It’s interesting to see how color grading and post ends up contributing to deeper meanings as well.

stranger things tik tok is talking abt how the blue meets yellow in the west theory could actually be for Will and Henry due to Will’s UD being blue meanwhile Henry’s original UD was yellow and while I def think it’s a possibility, a lot of ppl are saying this would mean the color theory doesn’t apply to byler at, which??
So here’s a big brained thought: it could be BOTH. gasp 😱
I’d even go a step further and they that both these theories aren’t mutually exclusive and are actually more closely related to each other plot wise, especially given that they stem from the same line. Will’s struggles with the UD are an externalization of trauma, and part of that trauma for him is growing up visibly queer in smalltown Indiana. Of course his parallels with Henry and his queerness would be related.
Also for me the color theory may as well be confirmed bc Mike and Will literally wore exclusively blue and yellow the entire fourth season. Even their rooms were blue and yellow respectively. So to me it seems pretty ridiculous to discount the color theory all together 🤨
what is it with this fandom in particular hating complexity and nuance in theories (and just in general tbh)?? I don’t get it 💀
also @aemiron-main werent u talking abt the blue and yellow of Henry and Will wayyy earlier with your warm and cool Will theory? I’m pretty sure that was part of it

Disney’s Figment in the Bingham house: A Symbol of Breaking Convention
Ep6 of S4, titled “The Dive,” contains the Bingham house segments. We are well aware of how symbolism, foreshadowing, parallels and more for the show and it’s characters fills this house to the brim. Metaphorically, there is so much to dive into—to uncover—regarding this house. This includes a Disney World Figment the dragon plush doll sitting below Suzie’s window.
Tumblr media
Figment is Epcot’s (one of the four Disney World Orlando parks) mascot. Figment himself is meant to be the literal embodiment of the phrase “figment of the imagination,” which matches Epcot’s brand of innovation. Basically, don’t let a figment (an idea or thought) of the mind stay in the mind; bring it into reality. I was working in Epcot when Stranger Things 4 aired, funnily enough in what’s called the Land Pavilion, which is directly beside an attraction called Journey Into Imagination with Figment.
In Journey Into Imagination, you sit on a slow-moving compartment that takes you through the “Imagination Institute” on an open house tour led by a character called Dr. Nigel Channing. He’s the chairman of this institute that researches and develops technological innovation in ways to harness the power of creativity. This research is what led to the discovery of Figment (in lore, not the ride).
Tumblr media
Now, as I mentioned above, Figment does not simply represent imagination; he is imagination literally, completely unrestrained and unwilling to yield in his sense of creativity despite being told to stop causing [harmless] chaos by Nigel.
While Nigel is enthusiastic in sharing the institute’s discoveries with the public (you, on this tour, and his goal is to stimulate your creativity through the five senses in order for you to harness your creativity), he is constantly voicing his wariness and disapproval of Figment’s mischievous but still harmless insistence to share his perspective throughout the tour (Figment expresses his tests/experiments/thoughts through song; I will explain momentarily because this is important). However, as you approach the ride’s end, Nigel has a change of mind. Nigel at first states “imagination must be captured and controlled.” Figment promptly replies, “Nuh-uh! Imagination works best when it’s set free!”
Soon enough, Figment figuratively and literally turns everything upside down. Because, as Nigel learns, “Imagination is the act of turning your thinking upside down!”
I mentioned Figment expresses his creativity through song, along with key pieces of dialogue that challenge your basic understanding of the senses (sight and hearing especially stand out). Rather than post the entire song and it’s dialogue, these are moments of intrigue I strung together:
FIGMENT: It’s not about listening with your ears—it’s about listening with your imagination.
For every sound your ears are hearing,
A thousand thoughts can start appearing.
And each of us imagines different things,
From just a sound, your mind has wings!
DR. NIGEL CHANNING: Continuing now, if I may, in a calm, scientific, Figment-free manner—the things we see with our eyes can control the eyes of the imagination. Let’s begin by using the eye chart to test your vision.
FIGMENT: With F-I-G-M-E-N-T,
You can see things differently!
Sure, you can see with your eyes. But imagine what you could see if you used your imagination!
One spark of light can light your fancy.
Your mind sees more than what your eyes see.
Your sense of sight can make your fancy fly.
There’s more to sight than meets the eye!
DR. NIGEL CHANNING: Figment, what is going on? You’re turning this entire open house upside down!
FIGMENT: Upside down? Now you’re talkin’!
With just a spark of inspiration,
I’ve made my house an innovation.
Imagination really clowns around:
Makes downside up, and upside down!
- after change of mind -
FIGMENT: A dream can be a dream come true. With just that spark from me and you.
DR. NIGEL CHANNING:
One little spark of inspiration
Is at the heart of all creation.
Right at the start of everything that’s new,
One little spark lights up for you.
-
There’s a lot to unpack here, but the first thing to take from all this is the importance of freeing your mind. Not just freeing your mind, but placing no restrictions upon yourself! Hear and see and be beyond the surface to open your perspective! All it takes is a spark of something new—something that could bring new light to you. To more than just yourself as well. Figment isn’t just imagination incarnate; he is non-conforming freedom.
In bringing this around to ST, this requires a dive through some ideas Figment could be associated with. There’s more than one meaning or foreshadowing we can grab from Figment in-frame.
The first association that comes to mind is Will and Mike. Will and Mike getting together and the GA reacting. Byler is in motion right now and there’s a desire from certain parts of the GA to control it—to stop this ‘harmful chaos,’ so to say. They want restriction on this ‘way of thinking,’ refusing to open up their minds to more and understanding how harmless it is for same-sex couples to exist. To people like this, who think so shortly, they believe queerness should be a figment of the imagination that never exists. But queerness does exist, queer people do exist, and it’s the opposing parts of the GA who haven’t freed their minds from restriction not acknowledging that truth. One spark of something new—a new ‘spark’/perspective to turn your thoughts upside down—is what can lead someone to understanding others’ differences. I don’t have to go into detail as to why “forced conformity is killing the kids” is such a vastly important line in Stranger Things.
But who else controls and restricts? Henry. He wants the world adapted to his mindset, his ideal, and he’s incapable of viewing any other perspective other than his own at this point. He tried to manipulate El into joining him and attempted to kill her when she wouldn’t. He bent what we know as the Mind Flayer to his whims, controlling it and using it to further control others. Now, we can gather that Henry wants Will to meet that standard of control in whatever way Henry intends to use him for. To possibly control Will’s powers.
If we take Dr. Nigel’s lyric “One little spark of inspiration is at the heart of all creation” and apply it to Will, this may align with the theory that Will created the current version of the Upside Down on the night he was kidnapped. Unintentionally perhaps, unknowing of what was happening to him in the moment and horribly shaken, something ‘sparked’ in Will’s mind that allowed him to reshape the UD to what we’re familiar with—maybe to what Will was familiar with.
From the tons of analysis we’ve undergone since S4 aired, we can infer Henry was stalking Will before he took him. Henry sees himself in Will and preys on him to accomplish what he couldn’t with El, and from that it isn’t hard to consider Will has powers Henry wants to manipulate. I currently have thoughts that Will could be multi-powered (like a wizard), and creation abilities would tie well into this idea. It could explain the frozen-in-time Hawkins appearance. Creation and imagination are tied to artistry, and that would be an on-the-nose alignment for Will. Will takes a blank canvas and paints—creates what his mind sees. Henry took the canvas of the unspoiled UD and started creating what he wants it to be. And if Will had an effect on Henry’s creation, if Will could have a greater effect on what Henry further intends to create, Henry would aim to harness all Will can do and make the upside down his downside up.
HOWEVER. The controlling way Henry thinks will be undone by our characters needing to think outside-of-the-box, breaking out of Henry’s mould and standard. And I analyze this by linking the shot of Figment in Suzie’s room—
Tumblr media
—to Mike’s Rubik’s cube and bedsheets in S1 + Mike’s blanket fort in S2.
Tumblr media
How? Color theory, web/gridgate, my rubikscubegate, and the mere presence of Figment. Figment is non-conforming freedom, an unrelenting force who strives to make anything possible. This includes breaking the standard of Dr. Nigel, who formerly believed imagination/thoughts should be controlled. My Rubik’s cube theory, which I recommend checking out here if you haven’t and are interested in greater details on it, discusses how Mike’s Rubik’s cube is a grid in and of itself. The colors we see directly on it are yellow, blue, and orange. I thought it was red at first, but it’s definitely orange. We know to associate Will with yellow and Mike with blue, but we’re missing our other primary color red: El. We see groupings of these three colors quite a lot, and yet red is missing here.
Or is it? Just as we know who to associate with yellow and blue, we know Mike and Will together are green. To make orange, you need red and yellow. El is included on the cube but combined with Will. We even see a square on Mike’s fort that is half yellow and orange (along with half blue&green and half blue&yellow squares; all three of these squares are near Mike’s head—his brain). And because this Rubik’s cube is solved and we can assume Mike did it, my theory is that Mike will be the one to figure out how they will defeat Henry. And for Mike’s strategy to work, Will and El need to team up specifically, as well as Will and Mike. The Rubik’s cube’s color scheme directly correlates to the grids and color schemes on Mike’s bedsheets and fort: Yellow, Blue, Y + B = Green, Red, and R + Y = Orange. You can get all these colors on their own or through combination on the cube and sheets.
And in this shot too.
Tumblr media
Figment against the blue and yellow wall, under the orange window sill and yellow curtains with blue trim… and there outside is green.
Green, outside the conventional box.
What makes this theory stronger is this series of words and character placement before and after seeing the above shot with Figment:
Tumblr media
‘Make sure to give that selfish shit a nice little shove for me.’
*Cue Mike at the front, looking at—through—the window first, piecing together the answer.
‘Give [him] a shove.’
We know Mike has been targeted by Henry, and Mike is going to suffer because of Henry. But Henry is also going to suffer because of Mike. Mike will figure him out and create a plan—through a spark of inspiration, if you will—that breaks Henry’s web of entrapments with a strategy that requires El, Will, and himself to work. And, ultimately, the final keys to Henry’s defeat are Will and Mike themselves.
Tumblr media
(Taken from my 7+7gate post, with the perfect additions from @stranger-chichka and @lilitblaukatz)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Picture credits and thoughts to @stranger-chichka.)
Henry’s way of thinking is going to get turned upside down and obliterated, by individuals who aim beyond controlled conformity and fight to set themselves free.
For Will and Mike, they will realize their own ‘spark’ (hello “Are Friends Electric?”) is what will set them free from withholding themselves.
And it’s something the GA will hopefully come to understand: Why this sense of freedom from society-placed restriction is so important for Will and Mike and the people they represent. In turning their thinking upside down and seeing—really seeing—the other side, more conventional standards may break.

Okay, here we go. First, if you haven't read my "El Knows" post, go read that! This post is a little addition on that, brought to you by Byler Color Theory.
It's concerning the moment in the cabin that El side-eyes Mike and/or Will, and closed her door with her powers, clearly annoyed. A video, for reference (thanks again to @theonebyler for the video):
tumblr_video
But what is she so annoyed about? How can we tell for sure? Hold up a second. Let's go back and take a closer look and...
Tumblr media
Oh? What color is the lighting in the room that El is walking into? So much that it's actually tinting the walls? That's right, green. Some people see red when they're upset. In this scene, El was seeing green. Green, also known as the Byler color, when blue meets yellow. (we can argue about if the walls are actually more green or more blue, but there is definitely some green in it. if it's shaded more towards blue, maybe that just means she's more annoyed with Mike (blue) than Will haha).
But what's really funny about this is, that is NOT the normal color of those walls. Here she is in the next scene we get from her a few minutes later:
Tumblr media
That green tint has disappeared. So, what's the difference? This scene is right after she had been focused on trying to find Max, and right when she was startled by Hopper's footsteps outside the door. In other words? She was no longer thinking Byler thoughts, so the lighting/color of the walls went back to normal.
I think we can take this to mean that she was definitely starting to put the Byler pieces together, and she is at the very least annoyed when she entered her room in a huff.
Big thanks to @sorry-i-panicked for helping with the color identification of El's room.
