The Buy In
Chapter 2: Taking Out the Trash
by @dracusfyre
“So who exactly are these cops hassling?” Bucky asked the next day as he met up with a man called Kenton at a bodega on 6th. “The shops? Dealers?”
“The ladies,” Kenton 'call me KT' said, shoving his hands in the pockets of his leather jacket. KT was stocky and short, with an aggressive undercut and stud in his lip, looking more like an emo kid than a mob enforcer. “We don’t have dealers here.”
“Really? None?" When KT nodded, Bucky asked, "How come?”
When KT eyeballed him skeptically, Bucky said, “Look, it’s my first day, alright? I’m not from around here.”
“Everyone knows the boss hates drugs,” KT said, hitting the button for the crosswalk. “Like, hates. A few years ago he tried to run all the dealers out, but they kept coming back like weeds. Too much demand to keep them out for long, you know? So the boss figures, you don’t kill weeds by cutting them down, you kill them at the roots. So he started targeting the users, not the dealers. First, he bought up the local methadone clinic, set up a rehab house nearby, brought in a bunch of fancy docs. Puts the word out that anyone who wants to dry out can stay for free and gets a sweet deal when you get your ninety-day chip.”
Bucky frowned. “I remember that. The mayor cut the ribbon on the facility, right? I thought the city set up that clinic.”
“Ha!” KT said it like that, an actual ha. “The boss let them take credit for it, sure. But it was his idea and his money. Once he got the clinic up and running, he put the word out to all the dealers, making them an offer: sell him all your goods, give him your client list, and you get a new job that pays twice what dealing does.”
“What happens if the dealer doesn’t take the offer?”
“One day they find themselves on a cargo ship to Madagascar,” KT said, matter of fact. “Or Indonesia, or Kamchatka.”  Bucky doubted that but kept it to himself; it was way more likely that the dealers got dumped in the river while Stark’s organization sold the drugs at a markup. But it was a good story. “Stoners can stay if they grow their shit locally,” KT continued, “but the party bros looking for bumps gotta get it somewhere else. But God help them if they make trouble, because the boss sure won’t.”
“Huh,” Bucky said, noncommittal. “So what are we doing today? Waiting for the cops to show their faces again?”
“Pretty much. Gonna talk to the ladies, then we’ll hang around and see if the pigs come back and let them know that their behavior is not appreciated.” A few more blocks down, KT knocked on an unassuming red door and led Bucky into a whole new world. He’d known when KT said ladies that he’d meant prostitutes and had braced himself for the worst: bare mattresses on the ground, barred windows, dull eyes and needle tracks. But what Bucky walked into looked more like the Waldorf than any brothel Bucky’d ever seen during his brief tour on Vice. Bucky tried not to stare as he took in the thick carpet and tasteful furnishings around the room, with women scattered around in groups chatting. Along one side of the room was a classy bar with mahogany wood and brass furnishings that had a few customers already despite the fact it was barely 5:30. KT approached the bartender, a petite but statuesque redhead with pinup curls wearing a corset that had, if Bucky’s eyes weren’t deceiving him, knives where the boning would be.
“Evening, Widow,” KT said, and the bartender gave him a grin as she slid a beer to the man across from her.
“Evening, gents,” she said, voice pure Georgia drawl. “So did the Iron Man himself send someone down to check on his chickadees?”
“Iron Man?” Bucky echoed in confusion. “You mean the Mechanic?”
“You must be new,” she said with amusement, and KT nodded. “He’s got lots of names, honey. He likes getting them and giving them. Bet he gave you a name, didn’t he?” she said, crossing her arms and leaning on the bar to give him an appreciative once-over. The pose made her look like she was going to spill out of her corset; didn’t do a thing for Bucky, but behind them the man with the beer walked into the back of a couch. “What does he call you?”
Ridiculously, Bucky felt his ears get hot. “Blue Eyes,” he said. “Probably like Jimmy Blue Eyes, I guess, but I don't know why. My name's not James.”
“It’s cuz of them pretty blue eyes of yours,” Widow said, and she laughed as Bucky felt the flush spread to his neck. “He must have taken a shine to you.”
“We're here about those cops you mentioned,” KT cut in, giving her cleavage a glance of appreciation but staying all business. “Stop teasing the help and give us the rundown.”
Widow gave Bucky another sultry smile and stood up straight. As she picked up a glass and rag and started polishing, the Georgia peach act fell away; her movements going from languorous to brisk. “Like I said to the boss, it was Rumlow and Rollins again,” she said, and Bucky’s eyebrows went up as even the accent disappeared. “They must think they got a pretty strong krishna to keep coming around here. They’ve got some of the new girls rattled. Came in just the other night trying to get a 'law enforcement discount,'" she said with a sneer, "and the only way we got them out of here without violence is Hawkeye got them too drunk to know if they were coming or going.” Widow tilted her head towards a man at the far end of the bar who looked like he was passed out, hat drawn down low over his eyes. “I wouldn’t have asked for backup if they weren’t cops, but.” She shrugged, and Bucky understood. Low level patsani, or even higher level enforcers, could disappear, but not a cop. “They also wanted a cut of what we pay to the Boss and wouldn’t listen when I tried to tell them it didn’t work like that.”
“What do you mean?” Bucky asked. "Doesn't work like what?"
Widow and KT shared a look. “He’s new,” he reminded her, and Widow smiled.
“Around here you don’t pay up, you buy in,” she said. “You’ll see.” She stepped away to take an order before Bucky could ask another question, so he turned back to KT.
“What are we going to do about the cops when they show up?” Bucky asked. Most times dirty cops got away with shaking down illegal businesses for money because it’s not like a bunch of criminals were going to rat them out to Internal Affairs. “Ask politely?”
“I have a few ideas,” KT said, sounding unconcerned. Bucky waited for him to say something else, but he apparently didn’t seem like sharing, so Bucky grunted and turned to scan the lounge.
While they’d been talking, a few more men, johns, Bucky assumed, had trickled in and were in conversation with the women, each of which were giving every indication that the man they were sitting next to was the funniest and most interesting man in the world. Guess that was one appeal of this place, Bucky thought; a man would never strike out here, and they probably spent good money to maintain the illusion that they were getting laid on their own merits. “Are all of the Boss's brothels like this?”
KT looked around like he was seeing the place for the first time. “Yeah,” he said, lifting one shoulder carelessly. “Boss invests in his people.”
Bucky supposed that made sense. Better margins in higher end prostitution. Still, it was strange to feel like he was hanging out in a hotel bar, complete with tipsy-looking couples disappearing into elevators to hook up. It was after 9 when the cops showed, still, stupidly enough, in uniform. Bucky suppressed the urge to curl his lip in disgust; these guys represented everything Bucky hated about his job, full of arrogance and spite and a thinly veiled hunger for violence. They were bullies, pure and simple, and Bucky hoped he would have a chance to punch one in the face. He could get away with it, too, if he told his superiors it was necessary to maintain his cover.
KT saw them the same time Bucky did; as they came closer to the bar, he slid off his barstool and put himself in their path.
“Who are you supposed to be?” The lead one sneered, looking down at KT, who was a good six inches shorter than the officer. “Are you supposed to be protecting these whores? You?”  Bucky came up behind him to back him up and read the officer’s badge. Rumlow. He memorized his badge number and that of the second officer, Rollins.
“Welcome back, officers,” KT said with a faint smile. “How can we help you?”
“Last time we asked nicely for our money, and we didn’t get it,” Rumlow said, coming closer so he was looming over KT. “We also asked for some trade, and didn’t get that either. We’re not going to ask nicely again.”
“Let me buy you a drink,” KT said, taking a step backward and gesturing towards the bar. “And let’s have a conversation, yeah?”
“We’re not here for no fucking conversation,” Rumlow spat. “We’re here for our money and a good lay, not necessarily in that order.”
“Fine.” KT’s friendly tone disappeared and his posture changed, going from relaxed and open to a coiled, snakelike tension, ready for violence. Bucky had seen that stance before, in his hand to hand combat training class at the academy. “We’ll cut to the chase.” Widow was watching them intently, a throwing knife already in her hand. Movement out of the corner of his eye proved that the man, Hawkeye, wasn’t as passed out as he appeared to be; Bucky could see light reflecting off the barrel of something, aimed at Rumlow. “For you to be coming in here like this, swinging your dick around, two things gotta be true: you must have protection, some fish big enough that you aren’t afraid of the Mechanic, and that big fish knows you’re here and doesn’t care. If that’s the case, then your boss and my boss are going to have problems. But if either of those things is not true, you are in a world of shit.”
At that, Rollins stole an uneasy glance at Rumlow, who was still trying to stare down KT. It was quick, but it gave the game away – and KT knew it, because suddenly he smiled and relaxed, which made Rumlow scowl harder. “Busted,” he said. “It’s not going to be hard to find out who your protection is, officers. And I don’t think they are going to be happy that you are picking fights with the Mechanic. Am I right?”
“Fuck you,” Rumlow snarled, and swung at KT. But the smaller man was ready, and KT stepped to one side of the swing, then grabbed Rumlow’s wrist and pulled at the same time that he put a hand on the back of his head and shoved, sending the man stumbling. Textbook judo move, to Bucky's eyes. As his partner got his feet under him again, Rollins went for his gun but Bucky already had his hand on it, shoving back down into its holster.
“Let’s keep it a fair fight,” Bucky said in a low voice, and Rollins listened because Bucky’s other hand had a knife slid up under the bottom edge of his bullet proof vest.
“Don’t make this any worse than it already is,” KT was saying, Rumlow’s face bright red with fury. “The Boss will let bygones be bygones if you leave now and don’t come back, but if blood gets shed...” He shook his head.
Rumlow’s face was red and Bucky could tell that he was furious at having been humiliated by someone smaller and lighter than him. Bucky was afraid that he would go for his pistol, but instead he put his hands up like he was in a boxing ring. KT smiled faintly and just made a “come here,” gesture, and that’s when Bucky knew he was trying to piss him off. And it worked; Rumlow lunged, swinging with a tight haymaker that would easily have broken KT’s jaw.
If it had connected, that is. But instead of trying to block, KT dropped to one knee, ducking under the swing, and hit Rumlow in the dick with an elbow as he scooped his leg and stood, throwing Rumlow to the ground where he curled around himself, cursing incoherently with pain.
Bucky whistled long and low, smothering a laugh. KT laid that asshole out in seconds. He released Rollins and said, “You can have your turn now, if you want.”
“That’s assault on an officer,” Rollins snarled, trying to help Rumlow to his feet. “I should haul you down to the station for that.”
“Your buddy clearly started it,” Bucky said. “It’s not like you don’t have witnesses. I’d get out of here before he does anything worse.” Bucky didn’t know if it was the fact that Rumlow still couldn’t stand up straight or the way that everyone was staring at them, but Rollins seemed to know good advice when he heard it, because they did leave, shouting threats the entire way.
“Did you get all that?” KT called out after the door slammed shut behind them, heading back to the bar where the Widow’s knife had disappeared like she’d never drawn it in the first place.
“Every second,” Hawkeye rumbled, sitting up. The barrel that Bucky had seen was a high-end camera lens, not a gun; he’d been videotaping the whole encounter. “Uploading it to YouTube now. That should get them off the streets for a while.”
“That’s how the Boss likes to settle things,” KT said with satisfaction. When he noticed Bucky looking at him with confusion, he said, “Listen here, because this is important: the Boss doesn’t like us to kill people. We don’t do this whole ‘send our guy to the hospital, we send your guy to the morgue’ thing, got it? We send them to the poorhouse. The poor bastard gets so tied up in lawsuits, repossessions, revoked passports, suspended licenses, and investigations that he wishes he were dead. Then the Boss goes after the poor bastard’s boss, and that boss’s boss…mobsters, dons, whatever you want to call them, they don’t mind dying, but they never, ever want to be broke. You start threating their bottom line and they pay attention.”
“Seriously?” Bucky said skeptically. Stark’s file said that he had plenty of blood on his hands.
“Seriously. You might get a pass if you don’t start it, but if it happens again, he cuts you loose, and believe me, it doesn’t take the cops long to track you down. They are hungry for anything they can get on the Boss.”
“You don't say,” Bucky said blandly. "So now what do we do?"
"We're going to stick around until the ladies close up shop, make sure those two don't get any bright ideas to circle back." KT pulled out his phone and started typing in it as he got back on his barstool where the ice in his drink had barely had time to melt. "Hawkeye usually makes sure the clientele behave themselves, so you can have a drink, but don't proposition any of the ladies while you're working."
"Right." What a strange goddamn way to run a criminal enterprise. After a moment, Bucky took a seat beside him and accepted a drink menu from the Widow, whose mouth was curling like she could read Bucky's thoughts.
"You'll get used to it, Blue Eyes," she said. "I got a good feeling about you."

The weather was hot in Atlanta Georgia. Robert was feeling the slick of the heat slipping down his back, parching his mouth, and gathering across his forehead. It was beginning to wear him down; muscles tired, eyes drooping. He needed a cold damn water bottle.
“Alright, that’s it,” he mumbled, getting up from his chair, where he’d been sitting and watching Chris Evans drag out a scene like only he could. “If no one’s going to offer a water bottle to a hot old man, I’m getting myself one.”
No one seemed to notice or even hear him.
Robert huffed. “Wow, I’m invisible.”
His irritability and the heat combined served to make him even more moody. He was never a hard actor to have on set, but today, under this indescribable heat,he’d had enough.
“This is basically inhuman,” he grumbled as he made his way across set, wiping sweat off his forehead. He was bee-lining for the actor’s lounge where he could perfectly picture the fridge full of glorious cold bottles. But when he walked in and found the fridge empty, panic began to settle in. Upon seeing the basket of ice usually filled with sodas as empty as the fridge, Robert’s mouth began to feel sticky.
Deciding to take matters into his own hands, he scrambled out into the sun, across the set, and out onto the streets of Atlanta. Looking around like a lost man in the desert, Robert found a Deli around the corner. Water called to him and he broke into a run. Who cares if TMZ snapped a pic of him running with a wild look on his face? A man had to do what a man had to do.
He all but burst into the Deli, the bell above ringing, announcing his presence. The clerk looked up, sweat on his brows, and frowned deeply.
“Water,” Robert demanded, his voice cracking. He sounded like Tom Hanks in Castaway.
The clerk pointed slowly to the back. “Help yourself, sir.”
Robert rushed, pushing aside a client that was standing in the chip row. Ignoring the small “Hey”, Robert ripped the door of the fridge open, savoring the cold on his palms, grabbed a bottle, and twist the cap open. Water dribbled and poured down his chin as he gulped, darkening his shirt, cooling his chest.
Finishing that bottle in half a second, he grabbed another, and this time, he sighed and leaned against the cold fridge door to savor that bottle. He’d buy the whole damn inventory if he had to.
“That ought to give you a belly ache.”
Robert frowned and turned, breathless from gulping on a whole bottle, and looked to see the woman standing before him. She stood with her hip jutted out, arms crossed over her chest. Her hair in a braid, sweaty strands curling beside her rosy cheeks. Something in Robert’s chest shifted.
“Who are you?” he asked defiantly, sipping on his water.
Her left brow rose. “I’m Y/N.” When he shrugged, she added, “And you bumped into me without saying sorry.”
He was expecting some form of reconnaissance. Some sort of, “Oh my God, you’re RDJ.” Or maybe something along the lines of, “Iron Man!” He’d also heard variations of, “Aren’t you famous?!”
But she looked at him with the air of a woman who’d been bumped into by a savagely parched man. And she looked at him like he was crazy. Well, he was covered in water and sweat, breathless, gulping on water like he was straight out of the desert.
“I was thirsty,” he said, still evaluating her. She was pretty, but not in the breathtaking, heart-stopping, Hollywood glam sort of way. She had a round chin and a soft jaw, her face still adorning the roundness of youth, even if she was clearly in her mid-twenties. Her hair was simply drawn back into a braid, and the color was vibrant against the color of her skin. But the thing Robert kept getting drawn back to was her eyes; intense and grasping, he was unable to look away.
“And I’m hungry for some Doritos, but you don’t see me pushing people like they’re trash.” Her lips pouted.
Robert smiled, easing up against the fridge door. Oh, this was good. “I never said you were trash, darling.”
She rolled her eyes. “I’m still waiting for an apology.”
“I’m sorry, princess,” he said, bowing, smirking.
“It’s Y/N,” she corrected.
“Y/N.” He tasted her name in his mouth. “I like it.”
Then she gave him a once over. “You look like a crazy asshole.”
“That’s because I am,” he laughed. Then he pointed to the chips. “And you should go with Miss Vickies. Way better. Crunchier chip. Fulfilling taste.”
Her frown turned into a raised brow. It softened her face, and the darling shape made Robert want to run his knuckles against her cheekbones.
“I didn’t know I was in the presence of a chip expert,” she retorted.
Robert laughed, shrugging. “I am a man of many trades.”
She looked between him and the chips, weighing her options. Then she sighed. “Miss Vickies, huh?”
And the innocent, purely mundane way that she bit her lip, hesitating between her preferred choice and his suggestion, made his stomach twist. A magnetism pulled at his insides, urging him to her. Fingers inching, itching, trembling. And suddenly, for the first time in a really long time, Robert Downey Junior was nervous in front of a woman. All thoughts of water evaporated from his mind.
Clearing his throat, he said, “Well, usually I pick plain, but if you’re having a rowdy night, I’d go with the party pack of sour cream.”
She wrinkled her nose. “It’s just me and my cat.”
He saw his opportunity. “You live ‘round here?”
“Yeah, south a few blocks.”
He nodded, fiddling with his bottle. “I’m sure your boyfriend is going to like sour cream.”
She smiled, a slow, slick knowing smile. Not looking at him, she laughed. “I don’t have a boyfriend.” And before he could ask, she said, “Or a girlfriend.”
That was it, right? She was basically telling him to make his move? Oh man, RDJ the man had courted many women. He was a stallion in flirting, but with her, with this seemingly ordinary yet magnetic Y/N, he couldn’t seem to distinguish his right foot from his left.
He cleared his throat again. Awkward. “I - uh - I’d like to participate in your chip tasting with you.”
Idiot.
She turned on him a questioning look, smirking lingering on her mouth. “Chip tasting?”
He rolled his eyes. “I’m trying to ask you out.”
“I see.”
After a beat, he said, “Well?”
She smiled. “Bring your kind of chips, I’ll provide my own.”
He beamed from ear to ear. His heart swelled, a strange sort of heat spreading across his belly. “That’s - that’s amazing.” Then he took out his phone, offering his contact list so she could enter her contact information. “I’m off around seven.”
Handing him back his phone, Y/N smiled, still that knowing and slick smile. “Text me and I’ll tell you where the chip headquarters are.”
He laughed, but before he could ask her something else, to prolong his time with this strangely magnetic mundane girl, she was walking out. He followed after, but before he could catch up to her, the clerk yelled out for him. They both stopped, Y/N in the open door, Atlanta sun washing across her like the halo of an angel.
“Are you going to pay for your water?” the clerk asked.
Robert’s mouth hung open.
Then the clerk frowned, cocked his head. “Hey, aren’t you Robert Downey Junior?”
Before he could answer, RDJ looked back to where the girl was, to gauge her reaction, but she was already gone, the door swinging behind her.

MIMI GRANT AURA | SKY SPRITE | SHE/HER | EIGHTY-SEVEN | BISEXUAL
defining traits
( + ) charming, personable, flirtatious, optimistic, confident, creative
( - ) cowardly, flighty, sensitive, dependent, haughty, begrudging, fake
biography
She was born Marie Grant, but she was always their little Mimi — a fitting name, for it was most of what she’d she’d grow to care about; me, me, me.
Her father was a widower; her mother bore the shame of a divorce behind her. Together they began a new chapter, but their love was one that found them later in life. By the doctors’ words, conception at her age was nothing short of a miracle. Mimi was their miracle, and they raised her to know it. She was destined for things beyond the ordinary, they affirmed. Lackluster crayon drawings of stick figures were framed like masterpieces, hung with pride in the hallways. Songs chirped off-pitch received thunderous applause. With mediocrity exalted, there was no need to try, so she never chose to, and they’d never dare force her.
Shielded by a set of parents whose love was strong enough to cripple, her heart was kept safe for a long, long time. The world was such a hard, cruel place.. They only wished to soften parts of it for her, to offer her comfort in the form of pretty white lies — that the family dog left to live on the dog farm, or that she really could go to princess school when she grew up. Any tear she shed was quickly wiped away, and soon forgotten as her attention was redirected somewhere shiny and new. She’d never solved a problem, never faced a consequence. When trouble found her, she had but one maneuver — to pull out her perfected pout, let the tears fall, and pray someone who knew better would save her. They always did, and she never learned a thing.
The Grants had been at the cross section of hard work and good luck after emancipation, among the few Black families in Georgia fortunate enough to acquire property. Her father inherited a small farm outside of Atlanta, and it was on that farm she was raised, gazing out her bedroom window at crops of peanuts, pecans, and blueberries. Of course it had been assumed that any child of theirs would lend their hands to the farm — but an hour of her work, hasty and careless, often required an extra hour of her father’s, as he doubled back and corrected her mistakes. Soon enough, she was no longer asked to chop wood for the stove, or weed the fields. It was better for all of them that way, and the indoors had always suited her better. She found joy in sneaking sprays of her mother’s perfume bottle, slipping into her coat, trying on her ring, and dreaming of a life that was soft and warm and easy and beautiful, dreams her heart had latched onto long before her mind could find the way there.
She could count on one hand the number of times she’d been out to the barn; the scent alone was enough to keep her far from that edge of the property. The day the flames brought it to the ground, she’d been safe in her room, trapped only in the daydreams of a sixteen-year-old girl while her parents, trapped inside.
In hearing of their deaths, she learned what it meant to be shattered. She’d never cried a tear that one of them hadn’t wiped away, and for weeks, she cried an ocean. Taken in by an aunt, her mother’s sister, in that house she was no longer a miracle, but a burden — another child to feed in a family of six already.. and one who couldn’t make a bed, or scrub a pot, or fry an egg. Gone were the days where her burnt toast received glowing reviews; what she faced instead was a barrage of sharp critiques her sensitive heart didn’t know how to process through any means but tears.
Most days, something would leave her crying — a memory of mom and dad, a snide comment from her aunt, a suspicious whisper exchanged between cousins as she passed in the hallway. She grew accustomed to fixing her mascara in bathroom mirrors, wiping black smudges from under her eyes each time she lost control. That new waterproof formula surely made more sense. She bought her first tube, and it lasted through the tears — but no one had warned her it would sting as she slicked it over her lashes, or how putrid the smell was, or how she’d have to scrub her eyes until they burned red to take it off. All that work, for what? Just in case she’d cry? And if she didn’t, then for nothing? If given the choice, she’d always defer discomfort, and so every day she’d make a bet with herself she knew she’d lose as she reached past the cry-proof tube for the easier choice — and every day she found herself wiping away those telltale black smudges.
The Grant estate fell to her as she came of age, and she made quick work of selling the farm. She’d never be able to sustain it, and her parents surely wouldn’t want the land wasted. It was the right thing to do, she reasoned, to put it in the hands of a family who’d cherish it. How convenient, then, that the sale of the property would also pad her pockets comfortably. Had she been a practical woman, she’d have had the funds to live a modest life without worry. Of all the names she’d been called, practical was never among them. Her heart bore a hole in the shape of a family, incomplete without the support she’d always known. Perhaps money couldn’t buy happiness, but it could fund a distraction. The city called to her, and under Atlanta’s lights she found an overpriced apartment and drowned her sorrows in silks, champagnes, and unadulterated excesses, spoiling herself too silly to even remember to be sad.
She never lost the blind confidence that she’d succeed at whatever she chose to try; her parents could be thanked for the cliche. As she saw the way men and women alike fawned over those beautiful girls in the photos they pinned up, with their ruby lips and coquettish grins, she decided that was what she wanted to be, too — a model. She was beautiful. She knew it as simple fact, even took it for granted, and like a fool, she assumed beauty was all it took. No one had told her, before she stepped on set for her first booked shoot, that it really was work — that it hurts to hold those poses in high heels, that the lights are scalding and the hours are long, or that the photographer’s job is to tell you everything you’re doing wrong until you run for the back door in tears.
She darted for the alley out back, desperate for fresh air and a moment to dry her eyes. It was there that she met him, an executive for the cosmetics brand she was surely busy disappointing, with his tie in a perfect Windsor knot, a cigarette on his lips, and his eyes mesmerized. By her. “They don’t know what they’re talking about in there. Just look at you — you have this aura about you..” She didn’t know what it meant, exactly, but as his thumb brushed away a tear from her cheek and his, she knew that all she’d wanted was to be looked at like that, to have someone wipe her eyes and call her something spectacular. It brought a smile back to her lips, brought color back to a world that had faded to monochrome black-and-grey. He wanted to help her, and if she was good at anything, it was being helped.
They abandoned the shoot hand in hand, down the alley and to a neighboring bar for a drink. One mai tai turned into another, her flirtatious giggle bouncing off the lounge’s walls as she slipped easily back into the familiarity of being fawned over. In the coming weeks, a relationship would bloom between the two of them — one that could’ve been plucked right from those sixteen-year-old daydreams she’d lived so comfortably in. She abandoned her overpriced apartment, making a home in his instead. By day she lived a life of leisure and ease, gossiping at the beauty salon and shopping at exclusive boutiques while he holed away at his office. Each night was a new society event they’d light up together, and in the beginning, the role of arm candy had been the cushy lift her ego had needed. She took naturally to being shown off, and he’d introduce her to society folk with glowing compliments, telling charming anecdotes as they sipped from champagne flutes.
It would take years for her to realize the way he recycled all of those compliments with every woman he met, that she’d heard his dull, predictable anecdotes so many times they might as well have been her own. She’d set out to be loved. Instead, she’d become another pretty thing on his shelf, mistaking possession for adoration while the void she sought to fill remained hollow and empty. She wanted out, but what would happen when she cut the cord? She’d be back to fending for herself, back to a world of mascara-stained handkerchiefs and an empty apartment? What little courage she had was far from enough to have the difficult break-up conversation. Instead, she and her cowardice sought to push him away, to force him to leave her. She was sour where she’d once been sweet, bitter in the places she’d once let him savor her, a brat with demands the size of the world — and he paid her so little mind as a person that, so long as she shone like the diamond he’d polished her into, he didn’t care what frivolous nonsense she spouted. She got away with it all, and it only further infuriated her.
She’d find the guts to break it off soon, she’d keep telling herself, moving the goalpost with a nervous gulp every time she failed to muster the nerve to follow through. She’d do it after their dinner date with the Thompsons.. No, after the gala the following week.. No, after their weekend in Palm Beach. She was sure of it.
She said little to him the day they boarded the yacht party, making a point of icing him out in favor of the starlets and models whose light she hoped to absorb. As the storm carried them away, dizzied and terrified, she thought only of her own survival, and as she pulled herself from the wreck on a deserted island, he was nowhere to be found. Perhaps she should’ve felt anxious, should’ve ran the island’s shores in search of him, but all she could feel was relief that she’d never have to have that difficult talk with him at all. He was gone, and the only guilt she felt was about her lack thereof. When her fellow survivors asked about the man she’d boarded with, about her shocking indifference to his disappearance, she’d tell them, “we barely even knew each other,” and she knew there was enough truth in that lie for her to believe it herself, too.
It took but one look upwards at the sky kingdom for the blurry memories of him to fade to black.
The sky sprites were everything she’d ever aspired to be, had everything her fantasies were built from. They were the answer. She’d been a fool to think that human pleasures could ever make her feel whole again, that there was a solution to her problems out in the cold world that had created them. No, she’d always been meant to live somewhere softer, amongst the clouds, where there were no sharp edges on which to prick herself. She found her family in the skies of Caelum — a group that knew their worth, who saw that she did, too, and loved her for it. Amongst them, she ascended, and Aura was born.
She took naturally to Caelum, her ego as large, fluffy, and delicate as the clouds she lived amongst. She wanted nothing more than to fully embrace the powers of the heavens, but none of the sprites had told her just how difficult it would be — that it required diligence, perseverance, training. It was work, and each gust of wind she tried to summon left her more flustered and frustrated than before she’d begun. It was easier to simply not — to sit back and let the other sprites show off, basking in the fruits of their labors rather than embarrassing and exhausting herself with her young, fledging magics.
It was a cruel trick of the universe, she’d lament, that the barrier had sealed her away before the world could see the way she now sparkled. From the little cloud she liked to rest atop of, she’d sing of the injustice of it all, how she dreamed of the day the island’s walls would fall for long enough for her to fly back to the real world — and as they finally do, she remains frozen on that very cloud. She simply has so much to teach these new humans, she’ll reason with a laugh; to leave now would be a disservice to them. But what does a sprite whose powers can be outmatched by an angry wind have to teach? Not a thing, but she’d never dare let the humans know she’s done little more than twiddle her thumbs for sixty-five years, while her equals can move mountains. Instead, she purses her lips and bolsters herself the way she always has, convinced by pure will alone that, before her first audience as a sprite, she will dazzle.
headcanons
A majority of her powers are very, very weak. She’s generally unwilling to exert the energy it takes to strengthen or use them. Her strongest are all relatively superficial — manipulating the sky and wind’s colors, summoning glittering stars, and floating, either on her own or while lounging on a cloud. During the times all of the sky sprites are doing things together, like lifting a plane over to the Wrecks, she’s usually faking it — like when you’re moving furniture, and there’s that one person who’s just pretending to hold the corner of the couch, without actually carrying any weight. That’s Aura.
Because she usually gets around by floating, she’s grown relatively clumsy on her feet over the last sixty-five years. Her leg muscles are weak, and will often buckle under her. Naturally, she finds it quite embarrassing, and will almost always choose to float, unless she has no choice.
She’s more likely to forget before she’ll forgive. She’s often flitting from one thing to the next, and will more often than not simply forget about a disagreement she’s having because her emotions are so caught up in another one. She’s a very resentful person, and her old grudges will often manifest in pouty comments whenever she happens to remember how someone wronged her.
potential connections
found family: Her Caelum family!! Aura has never felt more at home than she does in the sky kingdom, so I’d love to explore where her relationships with her fellow sky sprites have gone.
fellow passengers: I’m also super interested in seeing how she’s gotten along with the others from the 50s yacht! Maybe she met them that day, or maybe she already knew some of them from previous society events, etc. Would love to explore how that group bonded together after the accident, and how those bonds have changed as everyone went their separate ways and joined their kingdoms.
enablers: She’s notorious for doing The Least while simultaneously being The Most, so I’d love to explore the connections with sprites who inadvertently enable this kind of behavior by helping her out with things when she asks/charms/flirts/pouts/wears them down.
frenemies: She’s incredibly social, and generally friendly to most.. but she also looks down on most, and absolutely talks shit behind every one of her friend’s backs. Gimme some on-again-off-again friendships that Aura absolutely fucks up on the regular!!
migraines with aura: Ok this is just an excuse for some dumb wordplay and I’ll OWN IT!! You know the “aura” that comes just before a migraine? Like a warning sign that you’re about to be in a world of pain? Gimme someone that thinks of her like that lmao, that she’s an absolute headache.
human interests: The responsibility of turning a human is probably something that’s too much for her right now, as she barely knows how to take care of herself, but I’m sure she’s very curious about what she’s missed in the outside world and is eager to befriend and gossip with the new arrivals. And, of course, she wants them all to think she’s ethereal and otherworldly and all that.
flings: She’s a fickle-hearted flirt at her core, and she craves attention like Tinkerbell. I’m sure she’s had various flames throughout her time on the island.

Congratulations @yourtropegirl!!! A little later than I wanted tonight - I had unexpected company after work. “So I have run out of plot bunnies but I have song fic requests galore. So could I have Georgia on My Mind with Bones pretty please!!!”
Word Count: 1721
Author’s Note: As soon as I received this prompt, I saw a siren singing in a nightclub. Had to be done. Bones would totally be sucker for a husky voice singing in the medbay, don’t even try to convince me otherwise. I took liberties with the phrasing of the song, and cut the last verse because it was the same as the previous one. I hope you like it, @yourtropegirl!
The piano started before you stepped onto the stage, just as it did at the beginning of every set, in order to build tension. You checked your teeth in the mirror to make sure there was no trace of the red lipstick you wore before fluffing your hair one last time. With a saucy wink at your reflection, you heard your cue, and strode out to the microphone, tracing the gloved fingers of one hand across the stem of the device, and leaning into open your mouth. You couldn’t see much other than the front row in the darkened lounge, but the front row was packed with the silhouettes of your regulars. And a table with two men you were almost certain you’d never seen before, who were deep in a heated debate about something you could almost make out over the din of the band.
“Georgia, Georgia, the whole night through. Just an old sweet song keeps Georgia on my mind.” You always started the song low and breathy, a trick you’d learned at the Starfleet Academy when you were a teaching aide. The quieter you were, when you started to speak, the more people had to focus to hear you. Coupled with the sultry quality that made men and women all over the planet come to hear you sing, your stage presence kept the lounge busy and profitable. Not bad for a Starfleet deserter. It was a great gig. But you missed home, not that you could ever go back. As a result, at least once a week you started a set with the song. You winked at Big Jack, one of the lounge’s regulars. He was a tiny little Andorian who was able to keep the rest of the crowd laughing between sets, which was better than having them rowdy. And he claimed it was the price he was willing to pay in order to hear your voice night after night.
You turned and faced the other side of the front row, and again, the two men caught your eye. They were both in Starfleet uniforms. One was in command gold and the other in science blue. Science Blues appeared to be making a very important argument about something, given the amount of gesturing he was going with his hands. You felt a twinge of annoyance and regret. There were lots of people who came into the lounge to visit. Even some to do business. But most of them were thoughtful enough have their conversations in the back of the lounge, where the light didn’t hit them and the sound barely reached them. These two were having their argument right in the front row, pulling attention away from you. You brought your volume up a little, determined the command the attention of the two men.
“I said Georgia -” Science Blues stopped mid-sentence and turned his head to stare at you. “Georgia, a song of you comes as sweet and clear as moonlight through the pines.”
You had both their attention suddenly, and just as suddenly, realized you really didn’t want their attention. You hadn’t come all the way to this backwater planet in the middle of a nowhere galaxy filled with con men and space pirates just to be tracked down by Starfleet. You turned your attention back to the rest of the audience, refocusing on your regulars, for the final swell and end of the song. If you didn’t act like there was something wrong, maybe luck would be with you, and the Starfleet officers wouldn’t realize that you were a known deserter.
“Other arms reach out to me, other eyes smile tenderly. Still in peaceful dreams I see the road leads back to you. I said Georgia, ooh Georgia, no peace I find. Just an old sweet song keeps Georgia on my mind.”
The band played a medley of the end of the song with the beginning of the next, and you continued your set, trying not to pay any further heed to the two men sitting at the far side of the front row. The usual applause accompanied the end of your set, and you retreated to your change room to scrub the stage make-up off and change out of the form fitting red satin dress you’d worn to perform.
You waited a reasonable interval to allow the Starfleet officers to leave before heading to the bar for a drink. As you sat, staring into your whisky, you puffed your cheeks out with a forced sigh, before tipping your head to either side to stretch.
“Your sternocleidomastoid is tight,” a voice behind you offered. “A beautiful woman once told me I had legendary hands. I might be able to fix that.” You looked up at Makor, the bartender, and raised an eyebrow in question. He gave you a non-committal tilt of the head before turning back to the paying customers. You turned, fixing a bright smile on your face.
“That might be the best come-on I’ve ever heard,” you replied, taking in the appearance of Science Blues, starting with his narrow hips and progressing up. When you reached his face, your breath caught, and you couldn’t look away.
“Y/N?” It was Leonard McCoy. Even in your wildest dreams, it had never been Leonard McCoy who found you. You must have been hallucinating. You closed your eyes, willed the vision away and reopened them. It was still Leonard McCoy.
“Bones,” you breathed. “What are you -” You started
“I thought you were dead or -” He interrupted.
“Doing here?” You finished. It was a jumbled rush of words and you felt the need to close your eyes against the reality of Leonard McCoy standing in front of you.
Leonard reached out, and pushed a tendril of your hair off your face, his fingers skimming against the skin just a fraction of a second too long. “Oh, uh, Jim wanted, uh, Starfleet intercepted, uh, well. Uh, we’re here to collect a fugitive.” You distracted him. You always had. You’d wound up on opposite shifts because of it.
“A fugitive?” You asked, amused. “Sounds dangerous.”
“Nah, simple extraction. Just a Starfleet deserter who -” Before you could bolt, the golden waves of the transporter wrapped around you, pulling you through space. As you reappeared on the teleporter pad, you turned, and saw that while Leonard had distracted you, Jim Kirk had snuck up on you and triangulated the position of the three of you for transport. You heard the crack of your hand on Leonard’s cheek before you realized you had raised it to slap him.
“You bastard.” You turned to face Kirk and held out your hands, expecting manacles. The captain rolled his eyes and turned toward the transporter room doors.
“Come on, Y/L/N, I’ve got a cosy spot in the Brig all set up for you.” He didn’t even turn around to see if you would follow. He knew you would.
XXX
You lay on the hard bed in the Brig, staring at the ceiling. Jim had been to see you twice, but you’d chosen not to respond to his questioning. It didn’t matter why you’d run away from Starfleet, the consequence was the same. You were looking at the rest of your life in a penal colony.
“Y/N.” Jim had finally given up and sent Bones. You sat up and looked across the cell. On the far side of the glass, Leonard was standing, his med kit open on a table beside him. “Y/N, I need to assess you.”
“Ask M’Benga to come instead.” It wasn’t a request, it was a demand.
“No, Y/N, we need to talk -”
“I don’t need to talk -” you interrupted.
“Then just listen,” he snapped. “That night, on Proxima. I don’t know what you thought you saw -”
“It was two years ago, Leonard, it doesn’t matter,” you interrupted. “You should have told me you were unhappy.”
“I wasn’t unhappy!” He exploded, throwing his hands in the air. It was probably a good thing the transparent wall was between you. His face was red and he looked close to losing his temper. As quickly as you had the thought, the shield disappeared and he crossed the threshold into the cell, reaching into his pocket. He threw a small fabric bag at you. “I was buying you this. What you saw was me whispering the passcode to the vendor so she could retrieve her funds.”
You caught the bag, a question on your face. He gestured for you to open it, and you closed your eyes, the memory to catching Leonard kissing the other woman returning. From where you’d stood, it definitely seemed like he’d been kissing her. But from a different angle, it might have been something else.
You tugged the drawstring on the bag and shook it into your palm. A small perfect ring dropped into your hand. It had a single diamond, set low in the band. You could tell just by looking at it which hand it would fit. You breathing stopped and you looked up at Leonard.
“What -”
“Christmas was less than three weeks away. I’d planned to ask on Christmas morning,” he explained, stepping closer to you. You looked back at the ring in your hand, and then back up to him, your eyes filling with tears.
“I’ve missed you every single day,” you admitted. “I wanted to hate you so much and I couldn’t.”
“Don’t. Don’t hate me.” He took a final step toward you, and reached out, dashing the tears from your cheek, before closing the space between you, and sliding his arms down your arms. He leaned forward, and his lips met yours. Gently at first, and then more aggressive, insistent. Your arms slid around his neck as you returned the kiss, first tentatively. Assured by the frantic need of his lips against yours, you let out a soft moan at the back of your throat, and Leonard’s control snapped. He pushed you against the wall, hands roaming all over your body, regardless to the fact that the cell door was still open and anyone could see. “Don’t leave me again, Y/N. I can’t lose you a second time.”
You shook your head and held the ring out to him. “Did you want this -”
“You know what it means. It’s yours, if you’ll have me,” he interrupted.
“I will.”
Don’t forget!! Wildcard request contest is still open until 9PM Pacific time Sunday PM! Submit your request and maybe you’ll get your own reader imagine!

15+5+5 To Watch : 12819
The Atlanta Super Bowl Host Committee has announced final details around Super Bowl LIVE presented by Verizon. Musical acts set to play the free concert series include country music star Craig Campbell; Atlanta-borne indie rock and pop group Hero The Band; psychedelic rock band Hearty Har, which consists of John Fogerty’s sons, Tyler and Shane; and more. Atlanta native and world-renowned singer Monica will headline the final night of Super Bowl LIVE. As the presenting sponsor to Super Bowl LIVE, Verizon will engage with fans through multiple activations, including the stage side Verizon Up Members Lounge and the Verizon Experience. iHeartMedia Atlanta will also bring to life the iHeartRadio BoomBox Stage Sponsored by Orangetheory Fitness. And as part of the larger NFL Experience, fans can also check out the Best Buy TechZone, the Bridgestone Experience, and specific activations delivered by Turkish Airlines, the American Cancer Society, Bud Light, Pepsi, Aaron’s, The Legend Group, Hyundai, Frito-Lay, and Ford. Last year in Minneapolis, final tallies for the 10-day Super Bowl LIVE festival exceeded 1,055,000 attendees, and Super Bowl LIII organizers anticipate breaking that number in Atlanta.
StubHub has pioneered a new experience for Super Bowl ticket buyers to virtually experience their seat row in immersive 3D on their iPhone before buying. The StubHub app allows potential Super Bowl goers to get an up-close look at a 3D model of Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium to better plan their Super Bowl experience, and purchase tickets directly from the 3D seat view - an industry first. What’s more, fans who buy their tickets through StubHub will enjoy exclusive access to the StubHub ATL Tailgate – an “epic pregame for the year’s biggest game” – featuring Meet and Greets with such NFL legends as Dan Fouts, Ryan Shazier, and Emmanuel Sanders; and pass and catch time with former NFL quarterbacks Mark Brunell and Kordell Stewart. StubHub is also a gateway for fans to find the best of Atlanta all weekend long, including Shaq’s Fun House and the Super Bowl Music Festival. Secondary ticket prices have been trending down since the Super Bowl matchup was set, according to data from SeatGeek. Data from StubHub rival Ticketmaster shows the average price of Super Bowl tickets purchased on the secondary market is $6,477 as of Friday, a $300 decrease since Wednesday morning. The median listing price is down 22%, with the cheapest ticket at $3,200 as of Thursday.
Georgia-based companies are surprisingly absent from Super Bowl marketing. Many of Georgia's "big corporate citizens helped the city" prepare to host Super Bowl LIII, but they "aren't the NFL's Super Bowl sponsors," according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Chick-fil-A, UPS, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, Holiday Inn parent IHG, and Serta Simmons "won't be in the Super Bowl," and Coca-Cola is temporarily on the sideline. PepsiCo, an NFL sponsor since 2002, for the first time will "serve its namesake cola in the stadium where Coke normally holds licensing rights." Pepsi has "unleashed a blue wave" in Atlanta, and there are "plans to cover logos on Coke's coolers and fountain machines" at Mercedes-Benz Stadium during the game. Pepsi has also placed a "multi-story sign across from the World of Coca-Cola," and a local ad states, "Pepsi in Atlanta. How refreshing." The Atlanta Business Journal also noted one of the "more interesting conflicts" is between Mercedes-Benz and Hyundai, the "official car sponsor of the NFL." The game will be held in Mercedes-Benz Stadium, but the NFL is "using an image where it's impossible to see the gigantic Mercedes-Benz logo that adorns several sides" of the venue. Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines, on the other hand, “is able to leverage its Super Bowl marketing and branding ties" because the NFL doesn’t have an airline sponsor.
Vegas Stats & Information Network is predicting that more than $300 million will be wagered within eight states when the Patriots and Rams collide. “The handle, or amount wagered on the Big Game, has grown pretty steadily over the past decade, breaking records in Nevada for each of the past three years,” said VSiN CEO, Brian Musburger. “Between that momentum and the addition of seven new states taking regulated bets, we’re expecting the amount wagered this year to dwarf everything we’ve seen in the past.” However, as noted by Forbes, the $300 million estimate is only a small fraction of the money that will be wagered on Super Bowl LIII worldwide. According to the American Gaming Association, last year 97% of all sports betting in American was done illegally. Approximately $4.7 billion was bet on Super Bowl LII last year – an estimated $4.6 billion of that illegally.
The Atlanta Falcons reiterate that food prices will remain low for Super Bowl. Some numbers you don’t have to bet on at Super Bowl LIII – low prices for Mercedes-Benz Stadium concessions. According to ESPN, the Falcons have reiterated that Mercedes-Benz Stadium will “have its 'Fan First Menu Pricing'" in place at Super Bowl LIII. Compared to concession prices for last year's game at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, a "hot dog is $4 less expensive,” while "beer is $1.10 less per 20 ounces." Falcons President and CEO Rich McKay said that "increasing the prices based on the magnitude of the Super Bowl was never an option." One concession stand that will be closed on February 3: Chick-fil-A. The Home of the Original Chicken Sandwich will honor its Christian roots, Super Bowl or no.
Together, the NFL and United Way inspire change, in Atlanta and beyond. The longest-running collaboration between a major sports league and a nonprofit represents a powerful vehicle for change in communities. The Character Playbook, powered by EVERFI, teaches middle school students how to build healthy relationships and make good decisions. And the Hometown Huddle creates more opportunities for young people to get active and healthy, through league-wide Days of Service and special events at the Super Bowl and other NFL showcases. The NFL has also announced the launch of the Inspire Change platform, designed to showcase “the collaborative efforts of players, owners and the league to create positive change in communities across the country,” with a focus on education and economic advancement, police and community relations as well as criminal justice reform. As part of the league's ongoing commitment to social justice, the joint NFL players-owners working group recently approved two new social justice grants focused on the three priority areas, issued to Big Brothers Big Sisters of America and Operation HOPE.
To celebrate its first year as the official pizza of the Super Bowl, Pizza Hut is temporarily changing its name. Meet Pizza Hut Hut. The NFL named the chain its official pizza last February, but this is Pizza Hut’s first run as Super Bowl’s signature slice. Pizza Hut’s website already reflects the change, and USA Today reports an Atlanta location will temporarily rebrand itself with a new sign. The company will also debut two new Super Bowl ads featuring its Abraham Lincoln character already seen in commercials for Pizza Hut’s $5 deal menu. Pizza Hut will offer a game day special of $7.99 for a two-topping pie, and Super Bowl viewers in select states can order beer with their pizza from select restaurants. To that end, A-B InBev has "tacked on another 15 seconds to its Super Bowl ad buy, bringing the brewer's total time to five-minutes, 45 seconds, across eight ads," according to AdAge. The brewer also "plans to run eight more brand plugs during the game, totaling five seconds each." A-B InBev has "not approached this level of saturation" since 2010, when "nine ads spanned five minutes, 30 seconds."
Ads for Mister and Missus. Variety reported Planters will place Mr. Peanut in a 30-second "ad slated to appear in the second quarter" of Super Bowl LIII, the first time the character has made it to a Super Bowl ad in a decade. Viewers will see Mr. Peanut “riding a ‘nut mobile’ and play up the benefits of eating nuts." On the Missus side, P&G's Olay brand will also "make a surprise appearance in the Super Bowl -- a relatively rare entry from a women's beauty brand -- with a 30-second spot" from Saatchi & Saatchi, London, in the first quarter of the game. The spot is a "first for Olay, and the first beauty brand in the game since the small 'It's a 10' salon haircare brand aired an ad" in 2017. The last women's beauty brand to "air an ad in the Super Bowl before that was Unilever's Dove" in 2006. With the Olay spot, Sarah Jessica Parker appearing in a Stella Artois ad, and Kristin Chenoweth starring in an Avocados From Mexico spot, Madison Avenue is taking a page from the Hollywood playbook and featuring more female talent in the #MeToo era.
The Super Bowl isn’t ready for medical marijuana. Acreage Holdings, the multi-state cannabis company backed by former Speaker of the House John Boehner, says CBS rejected an ad that calls for the legalization of medical marijuana. While medical pot is now legal in more than 30 states, the federal prohibition on cannabis has restricted research and made it difficult for some potential patients to get their hands on a drug that proponents say helps treat seizures, pain and other ailments. The ad aimed to “create an advocacy campaign for constituents who are being lost in the dialogue,” Acreage President George Allen said. Acreage, one of the most valuable U.S. weed companies with a market value of more than $2.4 billion, had hoped to raise its profile and push for increased access to medical marijuana. Acreage created the ad thinking it had a legitimate chance of getting onto the air. The company said it was careful to position the spot as a “call to political action” rather than a pitch for its brand, which now has cannabis operations in roughly 15 states and Canada. The NFL hasn’t accept marijuana, either, but the league is actively studying medical benefits of the drug and may change its stance in the near future.
Saks Fifth Avenue has "one of its most successful men’s stores" in Atlanta, and in the lead-up to Super Bowl LIII it is "hoping to capitalize on the buzz by teaming with 26 brands to create more than 70 exclusive items for the game," according to Women’s Wear Daily. Participating brands "include Off-White, Versace, Valentino, Dior, Balmain, Fear of God, Hugo Boss, Palm Angels, Kappa Isaia, Canada Goose and others." The products "range from ready-to-wear and sneakers to accessories and were designed to celebrate the game." For the two weeks leading up to the game, the Atlanta store is dedicating its windows to the Super Bowl. One will "display the inside of a locker room and the other will display a replica of a football field; both will feature the exclusive men’s items." The high-end marketing certainly makes sense. Saks could make a killing off the hundreds of fashion-minded active and former NFL players in town for the game, let alone sartorially-savvy fans.
Lowe's will sponsor the NFL, filling the league’s Home Improvement category. The NFL has unveiled its newest corporate sponsorship -- a multiyear pact with Lowe’s, making it the league’s official home improvement retail sponsor. Plans are for Lowe’s to support NFL marketing platforms year-round, including the NFL Combine, Draft, Kickoff, and Salute to Service. Beginning next season, Lowe’s will be presenting sponsor of the Super Bowl Experience fan fest. Lowe’s will also have some NFL pass-through rights for its suppliers, and the deal should provide a distribution channel for NFL licensees. Lowe’s already sells NFL-logoed coolers, key blanks, and lanyards. The NFL has been pursuing a home improvement sponsor for several years. Home Depot was an NFL corporate sponsor 12 years ago, but is now synonymous with ESPN’s “College Game Day.” Lowe’s launching the sponsorship right before Super Bowl LIII, on Home Depot’s home turf, is definitely a shot across the bow.
Elsewhere in Sports
The NHL wraps another successful All Star break in San Jose. Meanwhile, the league and its players’ association have abandoned plans for the next World Cup of Hockey in September, 2020. The decision came as part of initial labor talks between the NHL and NHLPA, with their current collective bargaining agreement – signed in 2013 – set to expire in 2022. However, both the league and its players’ union have the choice to opt out of that deal this coming September, which would then see the current agreement terminate in September, 2020. Both parties, from NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman on down, seem eager to avoid a potential work stoppage like those that wiped out the entire 2004-2005 season and lasted more than three months in 2012-2013. While International tournaments like the World Cup of Hockey are generally well-attended by NHL players, last year the NHL did not send players to the Winter Olympics for the first time in two decades. Future Olympic participation is expected to be on the table during the next CBA negotiations, but all was peaceful in San Jose.
The NBA’s annual trip to Europe appears set for 2020 after Commissioner Adam Silver confirmed the league was looking at taking the game to Paris. London’s O2 Arena has hosted at least one regular season game eight times in the last nine years and has been the flagship location for the NBA’s competitive efforts abroad. Now, it looks as if London’s time playing host to the NBA Global Games could be up, with Silver stating his intention to host the 2020 edition in Paris at the AccorHotels Arena. Silver said, “France has historically been a terrific market for the NBA…I know when we've played many exhibition games in Paris over the years – I remember being there with Michael Jordan, the Chicago Bulls and the tremendous excitement around that team. It will continue, I think, to be an important market.” While Silver would not completely rule out hosting games in both London and Paris, he said it was unlikely the NBA would take two regular season games to Europe.
Colleges for the first time "will be allowed to use a U.S. Olympic team logo to promote their Olympic sports under a groundbreaking deal" between the NCAA and the USOC. Historically, according to SportsBusiness Journal, the USOC has "resisted sharing its marks with colleges and universities without being paid, because selling the rings is the committee’s primary source of funding along with media rights." The marketing arrangement is the "first major result of the USOC and NCAA’s attempts to work together.” The USOC "now sees the persistent cuts in low-revenue-generating Olympic sports programs on college campuses as a significant strategic concern." Interested schools "will be able to opt into a free agreement that would allow use of a template with the USOC’s 'flag and rings' logo on the right and the school’s mark on the left, with the words 'Olympians Made Here' in the middle." The USOC "will offer the rights to any school that has ever had a current student or alumnus make the U.S. Olympic or Paralympic teams.” No schools have officially committed, but Duke is said to be interested.
Chattanooga FC offering supporters chance to buy equity stake in club. Chattanooga Football Club has announced a limited offering of 8,000 shares, close to a $2.95 million valuation, that gives supporters of the local soccer team the opportunity to own a piece of the club. According to JohnWallStreet, the capital raised will fund the organization’s transition from amateur to professional players and to turn Chattanooga FC into to a year-round operation in preparation of fully joining the NPSL for the 2020 season. The club becomes the first American pro sports team to take advantage of reformed securities laws that now permit non-accredited investors to invest in corporations via online crowdfunding platforms. Most of America, on both the investor and the corporate side, had been frozen out of having access to that sort of capital”, which explains why the American sports landscape has been dominated by such a small group of wealthy owners. While crowdfunding gives average fans the chance to invest in pro sports, don’t expect your favorite NFL, NBA, MLB, or NHL franchise to raise money in that manner. The cheapest franchise of the Big Four is the NHL Phoenix Coyotes, currently valued at $290 million.
Tech Top Five
The NHL grows its esports presence with a gamer house for its All Star game. The added event, called the "House of CHEL," was held at a 30,000-square-foot-mansion in Palo Alto, California that includes an indoor ice rink. According to SportsBusiness Journal, the league hosted six gamers and two hosts at the event space Thursday-Saturday as they competed in EA Sports’ "NHL 19" streamed across NHL social and digital platforms as well as its Twitch channel. The list of participants included pro gamers and Wild Right Wing J.T. Brown, who also has his own Twitch channel and frequently streams himself playing video games on the platform. After launching the 2018 NHL Gaming World Championship last year, the new House of CHEL should benefit the league which already sees some of the highest online fan engagement while further drawing in a demographic of younger fans to the sport.
The NBA opens a door for sports betting while the league is spreading its 2K brand globally. The NBA has introduced a ten-minute option on its International League Pass, allowing fans in Canada to buy any ten minutes of a game for just CA$0.99. According to Action Network, the league will roll out the same offer in the U.S. at a later date. After the league started offering reduced pricing for games on a pay-less-after-each-quarter model, this news is a further upgrade for the world of sports betting. Additionally, the NBA is expanding overseas in regard to 2K. According to OZY, the Atlanta Hawks, Brooklyn Nets, Los Angeles Lakers, and Minnesota Timberwolves recently joined the 17 initial NBA teams to sponsor NBA 2K League franchises. Having a 2K League franchise in L.A. is huge for basketball gaming, giving NBA esports a presence in the second-biggest market in North America. The trick will be to involve the final 9 NBA teams holding out from the 2K league to demonstrate a full league presence overseas and draw further interest in the NBA.
Smart clothing enters a new phase for sports gear. Both Polo Ralph Lauren and Nike have updated their lines of hi-tech clothing to bring athletes and fans into the next generation. According to the Stamford Advocate, Nike revealed the Adapt BB kicks which feature the next generation of Nike's EARL self-lacing technology. The shoe will be released in mid-February retailing for $350 and have a companion app that can instantly change how the sneakers fit using Bluetooth. The “BB” stands for basketball and fittingly, the shoe will be targeted towards basketball athletes. Meanwhile, Ralph Lauren has updated their Olympic athletic collection of hi-tech jackets from the 2018 South Korea games and will now sell them to the public. The Polo 11 snow-white jacket will begin to roll out in January with the silver Glacier Down jackets becoming available later this year; both of which feature a Bluetooth-controlled heating component sewn into the conductive lining. Look for NBA players rocking the Nike self-lacing shoes and winter athletes spreading the warmth.
YouTube and UEFA team up to deliver a channel dedicated to women’s soccer. As part of UEFA’s #WePlayStrong brand, the organization has partnered with a range of high-profile female athletes to provide regular content including daily insights into the routines and livelihoods of players, as well as fitness advice and amusing challenges on a YouTube channel. According to SportsPro, the channel will give players from across Europe the opportunity to tell their own stories and raise the profile of the women’s game. Footballers who will take part include Swedish defender Petronella Ekroth, Arsenal’s Lisa Evans, German striker Eunice Beckmann, Austria’s Sarah Zadrazil, Lyon’s Shanice van de Sanden, and world champion freestyler Liv Cooke. The channel also comes on the heels of a landmark deal that UEFA signed with VISA through 2025 which should help boost its marketing. By embracing #WePlayStrong, it is likely that women's soccer will gain many new young fans through YouTube and other social media platforms.
ESPN+ draws in a record number of subscribers during UFC fight night while Brian Lockhart is the new executive producer. After most recently serving as vice president of NFL Media’s Original Content Group, Lockhart will oversee strategy and development for all ESPN+ Original Content initiatives including new projects and existing shows. Meanwhile, during his arrival, ESPN+’s UFC Fight Night drew a record number of 568,000 new subscribers over its debut weekend, with more than 90% coming in on the Saturday fight day. Meanwhile, it took ESPN+ five months to surpass 1 million paying subscribers when it launched the service in April, 2018. According to Bloomberg, ESPN’s parent company Disney is making a big investment into streaming and monthly subscriptions as in addition to ESPN+ and Hulu, the company will likely show off its highly anticipated Disney+ streaming service at an April investor meeting – a platform that will directly challenge Netflix Inc. If adding subscribers during Fight Night continues for ESPN+, they’re in luck: Saturday night’s event was the first fight card of ESPN+’s five-year agreement with UFC, where it will offer 20 exclusive UFC Fight Night events a year.
Power of Sports Five
The Pats are headed to the Super Bowl and accompanying them is a charity raffle for two tickets. The New England Patriots Foundation opened an online charity raffle for a deluxe trip to sold-out Super Bowl LIII in Atlanta on February 3. In addition to two tickets to the big game, the raffle winner and their guest will receive two passes to a pre-game tailgate party and entrance to a private after party attended by Patriots players and members of the Kraft family. According to The Boston Herald, this is the third consecutive year that the charity has held the contest. Last year, the Patriots Foundation raised more than $300,000 through a series of playoff ticket raffles. The team’s nonprofit used that money to build two playgrounds in Fall River and Central Rhode Island. This year’s winner will be announced on January 30 and while offering a once in a lifetime Super Bowl experience, the Patriots have found a way to give back to youth in the greater New England community.
Ludacris is set to host the Big Game Big Give (BGBG) pre-Super Bowl charity event. The soiree will be held at the estate of philanthropists Jeff and Carla Goldstein and will bring out some of the biggest names in Atlanta to give back to local charities. According to Digital Journal, the star-studded gala has been voted the Number One Super Bowl Party by ESPN, raised more than $10 million for worthwhile causes around the globe, and is now in its tenth year. This year's BGBG honoree, Steve Gleason, formerly of the New Orleans Saints, is a leading advocate for ALS patients worldwide and was recently selected by Congress to receive the Congressional Gold Medal for his work as an ALS activist. BGBG was launched in 2009 by the President and Founder of The Giving Back Fund, Marc Pollick. This year’s BGBG brings together some of the most powerful individuals in Atlanta to aid the fight against ALS while sidestepping the NFL’s on-field politics.
Verizon will air a Super Bowl advertisement with a first responder theme. According to Fortune, the ad features 11 NFL players and one coach whose lives were saved by first responders. The announcement comes after Verizon received criticism for slowing mobile data connections and limiting service of Santa Clara County firefighters while they battled California’s Mendocino Complex wildfire in August. After apologizing, Verizon said it would no longer impose data caps on first responders and will contribute up to $1.5 million to First Responders Outreach, a nonprofit that provides grants for emergency relief, training, and equipment to the industry. The way that the donation will be delivered is in $1 increments every time a person posts to Twitter or Facebook using the hashtag #AllOurThanks January 18-February 3, echoing a similar tactic to provide hurricane relief as part of T-Mobile’s #HR4HR campaign during the past MLB postseason. This ad hopefully will help clear Verizon’s name while providing others in future disasters with help.
Gillette challenges the definition of masculinity with a #MeToo inspired Super Bowl commercial. The “We believe” commercial directly refers to sexual harassment and bullying, and has already amassed a lot of attention online due to its demonstrations of “toxic masculinity.” The ad depicts the ways that harmful forms of masculinity have become normalized and ends by asking men to be self-reflective about their attitudes and behavior. Criticism for the ad has been harsh on social media, with some men indicating they would boycott the brand. According to U of T News, the commercial is on track to become one of the most disliked videos ever, already accumulating more than 24 million views, 713,000 likes, and 1.2 million dislikes on YouTube. Gillette’s new campaign, “The Best Men Can Be,” updates its tagline from 30 years ago, “The Best a Man Can Get.” Furthermore, the company promises to donate $1 million per year for three years to American non-profit organizations dedicated to educating and helping men become their own “personal best.” Gillette hopes to reinvent its brand with this cause marketing campaign that is sure to draw a stir during the Super Bowl – it is one of the first examples of a product intended for men having a social cause attached to its marketing.
The Souper Bowl of Caring feeds hundreds of thousands during the week around the big game. According to superbowl.org, young people with the non-profit have been leading the charge and inspiring others to collect money and food in the weeks leading up to the Super Bowl since 1990. By teaming up with local partners, these groups give 100% of donations to local charities and make the largest weekend of football into a weekend of philanthropy. As of January 24, the organization had 542 groups participating with over $3 million in cash and food items donated to date for the year. Since its inception, all participating groups have raised more than $143 million in cash and food donations. In 2008 alone, more than 14,000 groups collected over $10 million to tackle hunger and homelessness. The Souper Bowl of Giving has secured partnerships with nine different NFL teams and is always looking for more young volunteers to help give back to their communities.
