—how you get the girl
Tumblr media
pairing: jj maybank x fem!routledge!reader
summary: the pogues don’t seem to be on the same page at dealing with your break up
warnings: cussing, fighting
notes: this was originially planned as my get him back fic for the guts masterlist, but i realised, that it didn't really fit the theme, so i just finished it differently lol
chaotic is my favorite type of genre... so enjoy!!!
"shit" kiara bend down and grabbed the book that just came flying out of the window
"oh they aren't done yet" said pope, outstretching his hand and catching another flying book.
"should we.. say something?" sarah looked at her friends questingly
"hell nah" john b shook his head
"this is just normal behaviour for them" kie let herself fall down in the lounge chair
"normal?" asked sarah, before she screeched in shock, diving out of the way before the shoe could hit her
"yeah" shrugged pope "we're used to this by now"
"aren't you like scared that you sister will get hurt?" sarah turned her head to john b, who just shrugged
"she's the one throwing things"
"o-kay" sarah sat down beneath the window in the hope to not get hit with anything "i'm sorry that i'm just grasping that now, but aren't they like in a happy relationship? why don't they just break up if they don't get along?"
"they never break up" said kiara "they don't fight often, but when they do, it's over"
"believe me, you don't want to be near them when it happens" john b exchanged a look with pope "one time pope accidently walked in on them fighting and y/n screamed at him"
"she's worse than my mother" said pope and he looked like he was having war flashbacks
"he cried" concluded kiara
"oh wow" sarah nodded, slowly understanding what was going on
the group stopped talking as the door got opened and jj and y/n stepped outside.
"hey guys!" kiara smiled innocently and sarah quickly noticed that it was best to act as if they didn't hear what had been going on "how are you both?"
"oh just fine" you said, smiling at your friends "jj and i broke up"
"you did what?" john b leaned forward and kiara mirrored his shocked facial expression
"so.. this is not normal, yeah?" whispered sarah, leaning over to pope
"eh, this never happened before" replied pope while not taking his eyes off of the broken up couple, watching them like a hawk
"we decided that it would be best if we ended things" jj said shrugging "it's as simple as that"
"simple?" asked kiara and she looked like her eye was twitching
"yes..?" you asked, not quiet grasping why everyone was so upset about your break up
"you've been dating for the past four years" john b flailed his arms dramatically "you can't just break up!"
"of course we can" you argued "because we just did"
jj looked at the time on his phone, before he held it up in your direction. "it's half past two"
"alright" you stood up and followed jj off the patio
"wait, where are you going?" kiara looked between you both and the rest of your friends
"i'll take her to work and then help my cousin in the workshop"
no one said a word at that and you guys left.
pope looked between his friends, shock still evident on his face. "so this is the new normal?" he whispered
"relax, they can't hear you" sarah laughed and all eyes went to her. none of the other found anything remotely funny in that moment
"i jinxed it" murmured kiara "i told sarah that they never break up and look where it's gotten us"
"why do you freak out about this?" asked sarah confused "i mean, of course it's sad, but if they say it's for the better?"
"uncharted territory, baby" john b declared dramatically
"yeah" kiara nodded "they are happy for a long time, then they have a big fight, they make up, which is disgusting, but works and then.. rinse and repeat"
"you got used to them dating so we can just get used to them.. not dating, right?" sarah questioned
"it's not this easy" kiara shook her head
"yeah, they've been together since puberty started and i think that had a big impact on who they are now" john b explained
"that's ridiculous" sarah laughed "she's your sister, you know her better than anyone"
"i knew her when she was dating jj and before that when she was pining after jj" john b gasped "i don't think i know her without him in the picture"
"john b" sarah sighed. she couldn't really believe what was going on right now. the pogues had always been pretty chill and normal, well obviously not when it came to the dating life of their friends
"he's right" pope said, interrupting sarah's train of thought. "you know jj and y/n, sarah. they are pretty unpredictable, but while they were together they would calm each other down"
"now they are like two wandering fire hazards" kiara exclaimed
"okay" sarah sighed "when you're so worried" she thought for a second "why don't we split up and watch them until they are done with the break up and hopefully not co-dependent anymore"
"pope?" john b turned to the boy
"it could work" pope nodded "as long as we keep possible outbreaks to a down low and maybe keep them away from each other, no one will get hurt"
"you're talking as if they would actually errupt like a volcano"
"we aren't joking, sarah" kie looked to the boys "the week before they started dating, the chateau nearly burned down"
sarah just nodded silently, not quiet believing what she was hearing, she would change her mind pretty quickly
sarah and kie drove to the ice cream shop you were working at, while pope and john b watched visited jj at his cousin's workshop
"ladies" you smiled as you noticed kie and sarah sitting at a table you served.
"hey girl" kie smiled brightly and sarah send her a confused look, until kie slapped her arm
sarah made a surprised sound, before she quickly said the first thing she could think of "howdy"
you send her a puzzled look, before you left the menu "i'll be back in a few minutes to take your orders" then you left the table still watching them suspiciously
"howdy?" kie asked horrified
"it's the first thing that came to mind"
"this is gonna be a long day" kie murmured "hopefully the boys are better at this than we are"
pope and john b had managed to be even worse
"so..uh single huh?" pope outstretched his arm to lean against the car jj was working on, but underestimated the distance and nearly knocked the mirror off
"relax, okay?" john b whispered
jj got up from under the car "i guess, yeah"
"so how about a tinder account?" before jj could answer pope's question john b had elbowed him in the stomach. pope bend over
"okay, what going on with you? you are acting stranger than usual" jj looked from one to the other
"we're.. adjusting" john b explained
"yeah, you and y/n have been together for forever"
"hhm" jj nodded "we dated a pretty long time"
"yeah, you shouldn't just give up on such a long relationship"
"i don't know guys" jj walked around the car to open the hood "we decided this together and she seemed happy with the decision"
"i bet she's crushed and just didn't want you to know" pope argued
"yeah" john b nodded enthusiastically "you know y/n, she's always trying to be tough. she's with the girls right now, i bet she's feeling horrible"
"i just feel so relived, you know?" you were currently joining sarah and kie at their table while you were on your break. each of you devouring your ice cream.
"you go, girl!" sarah encouraged
"i mean the time we were together was amazing, but i just think we need to let it go"
"do you still love him?" kie asked leaning forward
"i guess" you shrugged "i don't think you can just stop doing that"
"i think you made the right decision" sarah nodded and kie send her a wide eyed look "you should know when a relationship isn't worth staying for"
"you're right" you looked at your phone to check the time "thanks guys, but i need to get back to work" you stood up from the table and walked back into the kitchen
"okay what was that?"
"what?" sarah "i just tried to help"
"by telling her she made the right choice?"
"she didn't?"
"yes…no" kie shook her head "i don't know, okay? what i do know is that it's always been y/n and jj as long as i've known them. they might seem fine, but nothing will ever be the same and they were really great together"
"that might be true, kie" sarah smiled emphatically "but we need to respect our friends decision. and when y/n thinks she made the right one then we have to trust her" kie nodded slowly "we cannot force them to upkeep a relationship, just because we are scared that their break up will destroy the friend group"
"you're right"
after your shift ended you left the shop together with kie and sarah, who had waited for you. "you really didn't have to wait for me" you smiled while you climbed in the backseat of kie's car.
"no problem" kie smiled
"we just want you to know that we're here for you" sarah turned around to look at you "to catch you if you should fall"
"o-kay" you breathed confused "why would that happen exactly?"
"are you kidding?" sarah laughed "you just left a long term relationship, no need to hold back your tears"
"i don't really do crying"
"alright" kie interrupted, before sarah could give you anymore unsolicited advice "let's just get you home"
"so you really think it's worth another shot?" jj stood infront of the flower shop. pope and john b to each side of him
"she will so happy to have you back" john b encouraged
"yeah, bet she's crying her eyes out right now" pope grinned
"bro" john b shook his head at the boy
"y/n doesn't cry" jj said absently his eyes on the yellow chrysanthemums "okay" he nodded "i'll do it"
"there you go brother" john b patted his shoulder while pushing him towards the entry
pope and john b waited outside the shop for jj to return, while jj was being advised by a girl that seemed to be working in the shop. pope snapped a quick picture of jj inside the flower shop and send it to kie
you were sitting on your bed in the chateau, while kie and sarah were preparing snacks for you in the kitchen. they had practically begged to wait in your room.
your eyes flew over the words on your book page, when a sudden sound peeked your interest. it was kie's phone that had just received a message. your curiosity got the better of you and you unlocked the phone.
pope had sent a photo of jj inside a flower shop a cute girl talking to him. your eyes grew big and then you noticed the caption that sealed the deal. how you get the girl
it was almost instantly that tears blurred your vision and you wiped them away in confusion. you turned kie's phone around and got up from the bed, sitting down on the floor in front of it, opening the drawer underneath it.
the drawer was filled with jj's things and memories of your time together. that made you cry even more. you grabbed the first hoodie you could find and pulled it over your head. then you sorted through all the stuff, your bedroom floor quickly being filled with things from your past.
"woah" sarah nearly lost her hold on the bowl of chips as she noticed you on the floor "seems like she does cry" she whispered in kiara's direction
"hey sweetheart" kie sat down on the ground beside you and opened her arms so you could crawl into them
"he's moving on so fast" you cried "i want him to be happy, but not with my favorite taylor swift song"
sarah and kie exchanged a confused look 'what is she talking about?' sarah mouthed, but kie just shrugged
"guys?" john b's voice could be heard from the front door "jj is with us"
the mention of his name made you cry even harder
"could you deal with that?" kie asked and sarah nodded, walking out of the room
"i don't think she should see you right now"
"what's wrong with her?" john b asked worriedly
"she's crying"
"y/n's crying?" jj put the flowers on the kitchen counter and tried to walk around sarah
"yeah" sarah shrugged "we told her the break up was the right thing to do and she seemed fine. but now she's crying her eyes out"
"y/n doesn't cry, sarah" jj seemed serious now
"you told her the break up was the right decision?" john b asked and sarah nodded
"we told jj the opposite" pope whispered loudly
"i can hear you" jj rolled his eyes "can i see her, please?"
sarah stepped aside and jj walked into your bedroom, followed by the rest of your friends
"y/n" he said as he noticed your crying form
you looked up at his voice and jj's heart broke as he noticed your sad expression, but then your face quickly changed. you seemed angrier than any of your friends had ever seen you. you got up and tried to charge at jj, luckily kiara could hold you back just before you were able to hit jj with an uppercut
"woah" jj raised his hands jumping back at your outbreak
"my favorite taylor swift song? really, jj?" you screamed and tried to free yourself from kie, but her hold wouldn't budge
"what are you talking about?" jj screamed back
"the flower shop girl" you cried "you obviously moved on quicker than i did"
jj send a panicked look in his friends direction. “how do you know about the flower shop?”
“so you admit to flirting with her?”
“no?” jj asked baffled “so?” he urged
“i read a text pope send to kie” you shamefully admitted, reaching for the phone on the bed and holding it in jj’s direction.
his eyes flew over the display quickly, looking at the photo and reading the caption. “how you get the girl, pope? really?” he was as angry as you had been a second ago and could now totally understand how you had misinterpreted the photo without it’s context
pope looked guilty. “he was getting flowers for you, y/n!” he tried to explain “i just took a photo without context but i was hinting the song at jj getting you back! you have to believe me”
you looked at the boy and saw the sincerity in his eyes. “i do” you nodded “where are they?” you turned your head at jj
“where is who?”
“the flowers” you rolled your eyes but he could see a smile forming on your face
“they’re in the kitchen”
you followed him out of the room, where he presented you with the flowers. “you got yellow chrysanthemums for me?” you said softly tears welling up in your eyes again
“i think you permanently changed her” he joked to pope, who smiled uncomfortably. jj turned back to you “of course baby, i would do anything if i can get you back. breaking up was the dumbest decision ever, don’t you think?”
“yeah” you laughed. “broke your heart i’ll put it back together” you whispered, leaning your forehead against his.
“i would wait forever and ever” jj smiled, and then he kissed you and all was well.
“and that, my friends, is how you get the girl” said sarah, crossing her arms happily, all while she ignored her friends protests at her not really seeing the importance of the situation like they had all begged her to at first. instead she just watched y/n and jj kiss and smile at each other.

As you laid in bed, staring at the ceiling, the touch of JJ’s lips against yours still lingered.
You could feel the ghost of his presence, it didn’t matter that he was across the hall, locked behind a door in his own room.
You lifted your hand, your fingertips brushing against your lips. Your face felt warm and you jerked your hand away, but it didn’t stop the memory from keeping you awake all night.
You couldn’t fathom that JJ had kissed you. You should’ve felt betrayed or something, after all he’d always been something akin to a brother to you, but you didn’t. Not really. You were mostly just confused about why you weren’t upset, and you weren’t sure what to do with that feeling.
In the morning you contemplated hiding in your room or fleeing from the house. You weren’t sure you could face JJ—what would you say to him?
It wasn’t like you had done anything wrong, so why did you feel so weird about it? He should feel weird if anything. He kissed you, not the other way around.
Did you kiss back? Even for a second? You were trying to remember.
It’s not like he was a bad kisser. The opposite, actually, but you couldn’t get over asking yourself why he did that.
You couldn’t even feel relief in solving the mystery of what was up with JJ and John B.
Jealousy was hell of a motivator.
Kiara texted you, and you came to a conclusion to your debate. She was up earlier than usual but hey, it was the perfect excuse to get out of the house.
You pulled on fresh clothes for the day and swung your door open.
The universe had a sense of humor, because JJ did the exact same thing. At least, the second part.
He was standing in his doorway across from you in only his boxers. You averted your eyes when you realized that.
“You’re not usually up this early.”
He sounded just as awkward as you felt. You swallowed, eyes flicking anywhere but his tan, exposed skin.
“Neither are you,” you replied, familiar warmth rising to your cheeks. “I’m going to Kie’s.”
“Do you…” JJ trailed off, swallowing back the words.
His instinct was to offer you a ride that way he could make sure you got where you needed to go safely, but it was too soon for both of you evidently.
You took a breath and met his gaze. You could feel him watching you.
“I don’t really know what to say here,” he admitted, scratching the back of his head.
“That makes two of us.”
The silence that followed felt so thick, filling the air around you.
“If you hate me now, I get it,” he said, voice low, and you could tell he was giving himself hell for it.
You almost laughed at the notion. Almost, but didn’t.
“I’d never hate you, JJ, don’t be stupid.”
Just the thought was absurd—how could he even think that for a second?
“I’m kinda running that department right now, actually.”
“What if we just… forget it?” you offered after a moment.
JJ’s brows twitched up. He hadn’t expected that.
You hadn’t planned on it either, but you didn’t know what else you were supposed to do. Scream at him? Ask him to do it again? No, ignoring it and going back to normal was the only logical choice.
“Okay,” he agreed.
There was something hesitant lingering in the background. You felt it too.
You took a breath. “Okay.”
“So do you want a ride to Kie’s then or…?”
“She's gonna pick me up,” you informed, maybe a little too quickly. JJ got the hint.
“Right. Got it,” he replied in the same tone.
You nodded a little, then turned down the hall. You were going to wait on the porch, that way you could make a clean getaway. If you got in her jeep quick enough maybe she wouldn’t try to stick around to say hi to JJ.
“Hey Y/N?” JJ called right before you turned the corner. You looked back at him, noticing a hint of worry before he masked it with the smallest of smiles. “Thanks for… y’know, not hating me.”
Again, you nodded. You then disappeared, and then wished you had said something, but you were already on the porch. You weren’t going to go back inside, back to the uncomfortable conversation you had just left.
Instead, when Kiara’s jeep eventually appeared, you climbed in and didn’t look back. You just needed to get your mind off of things, and a girls day would help with that.
Except Kie wanted to talk about last night, because of course she did.
The two of you ended up sitting on her bed leaning against the wooden headboard. The Youtube video on her laptop had been long forgotten as she persisted in getting an answer from you about what happened with JJ. You wouldn’t give her details despite how bad she wanted them.
“Are things good now at least?” she finally asked instead.
You swallowed, resisting the urge to lick your lips. JJ had taken up residence in the back of your mind the entire day.
“Yeah, it’s cool,” you replied vaguely, not quite meeting her eye. “He was just being protective of me. You know how it’s been.
Kiara hummed, seemingly agreeing. “He seemed way more pissed, but if it’s cool then it’s cool. I don’t get the big deal anyway, you’re your own person,” she started. “The ‘protective big brother’ thing can’t last forever.”
As she said the words, paired with air quotes, you cringed. Overnight you decided you didn’t like that title for him anymore, not when you knew what his lips felt like.
“He’s not my brother,” you muttered, more so to remind yourself of that fact. It wasn’t exactly cut and dry perfectly fine, but it could be worse right?
Kie gave you a look of concern. She heard, and hadn’t been expecting it.
“Are you sure everything is fine?”
You nodded, forcing out a chuckle. “Yeah, I already told you.” You nudged her with your elbow and she let herself smile, but it appeared to be cautious.
You ended up deciding to spend the night at Kie’s, texting JJ in the afternoon what your plans were. As strange as things felt, you didn’t want him to worry about where you were all night. He read the text but didn’t respond. At least he knew. You didn’t bother notifying Luke, you never had and it had never been a problem. He didn’t care.
You did worry about JJ though, hoping that nothing awful happened in your absence.
Your stomach was still churning with guilt when last minute Kiara asked if you wanted to go to an outdoor movie when the sun started to set.
“Yeah, sure,” you agreed, starting to feel claustrophobic in her bedroom anyway. “What movie?”
“Not sure, but Pope and JJ are going so if it sucks we can all make fun of it,” she replied.
A part of you was glad JJ wasn’t home alone with his dad (a big part, actually). The other part felt a rush of anxiety at the prospect of seeing him. What would you say to him? Could you two actually pretend everything was normal?
You’d seen JJ tell pretty believable lies, but he wasn’t exactly a professional at being able to hide his emotions.
Then again, he’d kept his real feelings hidden from you for who knows how long.
It was too late to back out. Kie was already searching for her car keys, with shoes on and her hair up, ready to go.
You were quiet in the jeep, which she might’ve noticed if you hadn’t requested to blast music with the windows down. Anything to drown out your thoughts and Kiara’s potential questions.
When Kiara pulled into the parking area of the field, the sun had already set. Perfect for a projector movie night.
That was one of the fun things about living in Kildare, the random little events that went on. Movie nights were common in the summer. Everyone would bring their own chairs and blankets, a projector would get set up, and concession sales would fund the whole thing. It was on the Kook’s side of the island where Kiara lived, but it wasn’t uncommon for both sides to attend, and it was peaceful for the most part.
You and Kie each grabbed a chair from the back of her car. They were dinky little beach chairs, but it was better than sitting in the grass.
It was a little crowded when the two of you began to weave through people, searching for the two boys, your main light source being the large projector.
Finally, towards the middle, you saw Pope stick his hand in the air and wave. You had just enough light to confirm it was him.
“Hey, they got a decent spot,” Kiara commented, leading the way to the them. You only hummed in response.
Pope and JJ already had the area set up. A blanket they both sat on, a cooler that JJ leaned his back on, and a big bag of pretzels Pope probably snatched from his family’s cabinet.
“You guys made it just in time,” Pope said, smiling up at you and Kie. “They’re starting in a few minutes.”
Your eyes flicked to JJ, who had adverted his gaze from you. He seemed really interested in the loading screen up ahead.
Kiara set her chair down next to the blanket, and you opted to put yours next to her. It was inconspicuous enough, no one would think you were putting space between yourself and JJ (even if you were).
“Is John B coming?” Kie wondered, asking no one in particular.
Pope glanced to JJ, which you only noticed because you had done the same thing. Had JJ told Pope?
No, definitely not. Pope would’ve had something to say about it for sure. He wouldn’t have asked you all to hang out in such a casual manner if he knew.
“Don’t know,” JJ said, opening the cooler and fishing out a beer. He popped the cap off and took a long drink. “Did you guys let him know?”
“No,” Kie said, dropping down into her chair.
“Well, there’s your answer,” JJ said with a shrug.
Kiara made a face.
“So you still have an attitude?”
“Can we just watch the movie?” you jumped in, sitting down in your chair.
The movie coming on a few seconds after your words halted any argument that could transpire. You were relieved to say the least.
You focused on the movie, trying to get into it, not letting your gaze wander. You made back and forth comments under your breath with Kiara, and sometimes you’d lean past her when Pope had something to say. JJ was quiet, which was abnormal for him. He was always talkative during movies, cracking jokes alongside you. If it wasn’t for the tension lingering between the two of you you might’ve forgotten he was even there.
You thought about trying to make a joke to get him involved in the little conversations, but you couldn’t bring yourself to. Nothing sounded clever enough to say aloud to him. You used to not think about how your words would sound to him, but now you concerned yourself with it. What you’d say to JJ if you could manage it, or if he was at least overhearing your comments to Pope and finding amusement in them—you cared too much about that all the sudden. Did he think you were funny?
Trying to be normal with JJ around was significantly harder than you thought it would’ve been, despite being the one who suggested it.
How were you supposed to be casual around your step brother who kissed you? You hadn’t thought it through in the morning, and it became clear to you that both you and JJ knew things weren’t copacetic. Problem was you didn’t know how to fix it.
You could feel JJ looking at you every once in a while, but you avoided his eyes. Not only did you not know what to say to him, but even if you did, the two of you couldn’t exactly talk about it in front of your friends.
After about an hour into the movie, the opportunity arose when JJ stood up out of nowhere.
“I’m gonna get something to eat,” he mumbled, making his way to the little building nearby.
“We have pretzels left,” Pope offered, but it fell on deaf ears. He looked at you and Kiara once JJ was out of earshot. “Is he still mad at John B about yesterday? He’s been weird all day and John B isn’t even here.”
When Kie turned to face you, you realized he was just talking to you.
You shrugged and said, “I wish I could tell you.” Neither of them looked convinced. “Don’t look at me like that, I’m not his keeper.”
“No, but you live together and you’re the person he trusts the most,” Pope acknowledged, worry in his tone. “If he would go to anyone it would be you.”
“He hasn’t said anything to you?” you asked.
Pope shook his head.
“They’re best friends, even when they argue they get over it,” Kie reminded.
“Did he ask you to not invite John B?” you continued questioning Pope, remembering JJ’s comment from before.
“No, John B’s working tonight. Something with the Cameron boat.”
“He definitely still seems mad at him,” Kie said, a knowing tone in her voice as she looked to you. “You never told me—what did he say to you when you got home?”
You could’ve lied but your brain wouldn’t come up with anything.
“Nothing really. Can we just watch the movie?” you asked instead. “Please?”
Everything had been fine just a day ago and now it was all so overwhelming.
Pope and Kie exchanged a look, but didn’t discuss further. It took about ten minutes for Pope to speak up again.
“JJ still isn’t back…” he noticed aloud. He craned his neck to look towards the snack line, but it was definitely no use. “Maybe someone should go find him.”
Someone. He meant you, didn’t he? You gave Pope a look, and he shrugged.
“Do you want me to go?” Kiara offered.
You shook your head. “It’s fine.”
It wasn’t, not really, but you got up anyway.
You crossed your arms over your chest as you walked to the small building, searching around for a sign of something familiar—blonde hair, his shirt or anything to tip you off. It took a bit of wandering, but you eventually found JJ. He wasn’t in line, but around the back of the concession building.
He was alone, sitting on the ground, a flask in his hand, and his back against the stone wall.
“You disappeared,” you commented, drawing his attention. You approached him, leaning on your side against the wall next to him.
Blue eyes turned up to you.
“They send you to find me?” he guessed snarkily. “I’m fine, thanks. You can go.”
You scoffed at his tone. “This is your plan, then? To hide back here and get drunk?” You guess whatever was in the flask was stronger than beer.
Something between a look of sadness and frustration crossed his features.
“What else am I supposed to do? Clearly you can’t stand to be around me,” he shot back, glaring up at you.
You were taken aback, jaw falling slack.
“I was the one that said we can forget it and go back,” you reminded.
JJ scoffed at that, getting to his feet, leaving his flask to fall to the ground.
“Then why can you barely look at me?” he asked, gesturing with his hands, defeated. You proved his point as you failed to meet his gaze directly. “I mean seriously, even Pope knows something is going on.”
If this had been a regular conversation, you might’ve laughed. Even with how smart he was, Pope could be oblivious sometimes. It was one of the running jokes amongst your friends. But now didn’t feel like a time for jokes.
You straightened up, standing across from him, holding your ground.
“I’m looking at you right now,” you stated, albeit with much less conviction than before. You did indeed meet his eyes, but it was forced, and meant you had to see the pain in them. You hated seeing JJ in pain. “It’s not too late to pretend things are normal.”
JJ laughed. It carried all the hurt he was struggling to keep in, the sound lacking nearly all humor. He took a step closer.
“Don’t you get it? There is no normal. Not for me,” he confessed, deeper emotion creeping into his voice. “There never has been and you—you act like you can’t even be around me now so I don’t know what the fuck I’m supposed to do.” The whole time he had been moving toward you absentmindedly, only noticing the close proximity when you had to look up to meet his gaze. He took a shaky breath, eyes pleading with you. “I can’t stop feeling the way I feel so just—just tell me what to do.”
“JJ…” you started softly, not knowing what to say to fix this. He must’ve been carrying this around for so long and all you wanted to do was help.
You weren’t sure who was more surprised when you pulled him into a hug, JJ or you. But he fell into your embrace regardless. He circled his arms around your waist when you wrapped yours around him. He held you tight, pressing his entire body to yours, like you could slip away any second. JJ’s head fell to your shoulder, and you couldn’t help but run your hand soothingly across his back. You could feel his heart racing in his chest and smell the fresh alcohol on his breath. He didn’t sound buzzed but it would’ve been his goal if you hadn’t interrupted.
“It’s gonna be okay,” you assured quietly.
Something about your words made him straighten up. You saw how his eyes glistened and the pout on his lips. The bruise on his cheek still lingered. A strand of his hair had fallen into his face and you brushed it back into place.
You always knew JJ was handsome, but right now, looking at him, the word beautiful came to mind. There was something about him that made it hard to look away.
Your eyes fell to his lips, recalling how they had felt pressed against yours.
You and JJ hadn’t always been close, but now you could hardly remember a time when you weren’t attached at the hip. It didn’t matter how recent that change had happened. He was always there to make you smile or comfort you in his own way, and you did the same for him. He always looked out for you, and you took care of him when he needed it the most.
Your relationship had never been very sibling-like the more you thought about it. Siblings weren’t close in the way you and JJ were. Why did it take you so long to realize that?
The proximity had to be clouding your mind. You felt overwhelmed by JJ’s presence and just… you glanced around, making sure no one was around to see. You two were alone behind the building, the movie and people sounding miles away.
Ever so delicately, your hand rose to his uninjured cheek. You heard JJ’s breath hitch as you leaned in. He lowered his head and let you kiss him softly, meeting you halfway.
You didn’t know what had come over you, but heat filled your body at the way his hand fell to hold your waist.
JJ made an attempt to deepen the kiss, and you let him. His tongue tasted yours and you couldn’t help the soft moan that escaped you.
That triggered something in him. JJ turned the both of you, backing you against the wall. Your back hit stone as he pressed himself against you. His kiss became more desperate, like he was afraid he was dreaming and might wake up. You tangled a hand into his hair and he groaned into your mouth before kissing you harder.
What the fuck were you doing? This was about the last thing you had planned and you didn’t even understand why it was happening. It was like the moment he kissed you just a night ago your brain was sent in a confusing spiral trying to place what you felt for him now that another option had opened up.
But had it really? This was wrong, it didn’t matter how good or how natural kissing JJ felt. It didn’t matter if you had come to the realization your relationship was more complex than you initially assumed. You both knew you shouldn’t be doing this, it was evident from the way you hid what happened from your friends, so how could it be okay?
You let your hand fall from his hair the deeper you sunk into contemplation. Your body pressed further back into the wall. You were retreating, and JJ could tell. He parted from you, noticing the way you turned your head away as if to prevent him from leaning back in.
“What’s wrong?” he asked carefully, nose nearly brushing your cheek.
“We…” You were trying to catch your breath. “We can’t do this. I’m sorry.”
You heard him swallow, stunned.
“You’re sorry?” He stepped back, face shifting between a flurry of emotions as he tried to figure out what to say to you. You wouldn’t know what to say to you either if you were JJ. “First I kiss you and you ignore me, now you kiss me and you’re sorry?”
You met his gaze, begging him to understand. Tears stung at your eyes and you blinked them away. You had a lapse in judgment and you knew you fucked up.
“I know, and I—“
“Don’t apologize!” You winced at the way he raised his voice, but you guessed you deserved it. You really wanted to sink back into the wall when his eyes filled with sorrow. You’d never been the cause of him looking at you in such a way and it felt awful. “Are you trying to hurt me?”
“That’s the last thing I want,” you professed, throat thick, but he shook his head.
“Then tell me what you want.”
What did you want? It shouldn’t have been a question that puzzled you, but in that moment, you found yourself without a true answer.
So, your mind went to the default, trying to preserve some sense of morality.
“We just need to forget it, alright?”
JJ scoffed. “You said that before and look how well that worked out.”
Your heart clenched in your chest as you said, “I mean it this time.”
JJ eyed you for a long time, silence heavy between the two of you. He was trying to figure out what to say to that. Obviously he didn’t agree, but how could he argue?
“Whatever,” he finally muttered.
JJ scooped his flask up off the ground. His hand pressed to his chest and you knew how deeply you messed up. He didn’t spare you another glance as he stormed off, leaving you teary eyed and alone against the wall with the knowledge that you screwed things up worse than he had before.

Part 2, chapter 3 - Big bad Rafe Cameron
Series masterlist
Warnings- arguments, some sexual jokes (sorry),some tension
Summary: you’re stuck with your ex and your brother friend, faking deaths with them and beating bitches up.
Tumblr media
After a whole day of arguing, you and Kiara shared a bed while Rafe slept on the floor. You ignored Rafe the rest of the time.
Kiara woke up early, banging on the door and asking for Singh while ignoring Rafe.
“You’re lying about this diary thing. You know where it is.” He said to Kiara, glancing at you who sat on the bed with a pillow in your lap.
“No, I don’t.”
“One of you fucking has to-“
“Oh, suck a dick, Rafe!” You shouted at him.
“Okay. Listen, I wouldn’t tell me either-“
Kiara went over to the window again and continued to bang against it.
“But he’s never gonna believe we don’t know something, all right? Singh- Singh killed that-“ he put his hand on her shoulder, she whipped around and threw it off her.
“Hey!”
“Look around, I’m the only friend you guys got.” He spoke, you glared at him.
All three of you turned at the sound of the door unlocking and opening, a guard coming in.
“I need to talk to Mr. Singh.” Kiara told the guard, coming closer to him. “I have something to tell him. It’s urgent.”
Rafe swallowed as she turned to him and back to the guard.
“Yes.”
You went to follow but the guard stopped you, holding out his hand.
“Oh, you’ve got to be fucking with me-“ you started but the guard shut the door, you and Rafe being left alone. Rafe’s hands went to his head. “Shit!” He whisper yelled.
He looked at you now, pacing the room while you stood in silence.
The two of you stayed in silence, you staring up the ceiling from the bed and him just staring out the window, his hands on his hips.
He came over to the bed after a while, running a hand down his face.
“You know, every night I think about what I did.” He admitted quietly when he sat down.
You furrowed an eyebrow at his words.
“Yeah, I know what you mean. I think I’m pretty traumatized.” You nodded to yourself, laughing quietly.
“I’m sorry.” He told you.
That was what surprised you, you sitting up and looking at him now.
“I’m sorry? That’s it? You’re sorry?”
“What else am I supposed to fucking say, huh?!” He threw his hands up, scoffing.
“Maybe more than I’m sorry? You pointed a gun at my head, you broke-“
The arguement was interrupted by the door being opened. Kiara being shoved inside. She sat next to you.
“Kie?” You spoke, turning to her now, a hand on her back.
“What happened?” Rafe asked. But she ignored him again. “You’re gonna have to talk to me at some point, okay?”
“Do I have to remind you of everything you’ve done?”
Rafe sighed.
“You killed peterkin. Do you remember that? And everything you’ve put Sarah through.”
“Peterkin, I was protecting my father, okay?”
She shook her head, staring forward.
“I did what I had to, so… don’t.”
He sat down in a chair in the corner.
“I’m as much a victim as she is.” Kiara turned to him, thinking different.
But you knew that he wasn’t wrong with that point.
“No? Think about it. Okay? What did I get from shooting Peterkin, huh? Nothing. Okay? I had nothing against her. I mean… I- I- I liked her. You- you think I wanted to make that choice, huh” he spluttered.
“What I did was a gift from me to my father… for… for him, and I got screwed because of it, okay? So don’t get that look when I say I’m a victim, all right? I am!” He continued.
It was silent for a little.
“I will admit, though, what I… what I did to Sarah… and what I did to you…” he turned his gaze to to you now. “What I tried to do…” he stood up. “I admit that was wrong. I know that. All right?” He teared up, his voice breaking. “So, you don’t have to remind me.”
Rafe cried, slapping his head before turning back to you both. “She was family, I should have never touched her, you know? I should I have never touched either of you, but you know, I just lose control in moments like that and I don’t know what happened- I just- I’m trying to get better. I’ve been clean and, and-“
Kiara stared forward while you stared at him, tears in your eyes.
“You’re clean?”
“It doesn’t matter, but all I’m trying to say is that I’m not the bad guy you think I am, okay? But even if I was, even if I was just like, bad Rafe Cameron or something.” He sniffled, pausing. “You got no choice. You… you may not want to trust me okay, but I’m your best bet.”
Rafe kneeled down in front of you both now, holding his hands out. You both stared down at him.
“Look… I got a boat that can get us off island, okay? But first, we gotta get out of here and it is better if we work together.”
A truck pulled up and Kiara stood up, going to the window. You and Rafe glanced at each other and then turned to the window.
“They’re leaving?”
“They’re going to find John B. And your sister. And your brother.” She told you both. You looked out the window, next to Rafe.
“Wait, what?” You exclaimed.
“Sucks for them. That’s good for us though. This may be our only shot at getting out of here.” Rafe spoke, watching them leave.
︵‿︵‿୨♡୧‿︵‿︵
“Just get away from me!”
“I’m tired of this shit, I’m gonna kill you guys!”
Kie and you screamed as you threw the vase against the wall. You both quickly running into the bathroom.
“Hey you three, what’d you do?!” The guard asked, unlocking and opening the door. Kies leg hung out the bathtub while Rafe was behind the door and you hid behind the bed.
Rafe shut the door on the man, the guard grunting as his gun flew. You ran over to the gun as Rafe fought him.
“Stay down! Stay down, you understand?” Rafe pinned the man, you held the gun to his head and cocked it.
“Huge mistake. You’ll regret this.”
“Gimme the phone.” Rafe grunted, stealing the man’s phone out his pocket. Kiara grabbed a curtain.
“Here, tie him up.”
Rafe quickly tied him. And as much as you hated to admit it…
Watching him beat that dude up was hot. Like holy shit, his arms. Has he been working out more? You thought.
“Don’t make a sound, all right?” He told the man. Your eyes widened as you stared at Rafe.
Yeah, that was the hottest thing you’ve heard and seen in your life. If only he wasn’t fucking insane. But maybe that’s what makes you love him so much. And those tying skills- he could tie you up and you wouldn’t com-
You were snapped out of your thoughts when Kiara shouted your name from the door.
“Y/n! Hurry up!”
“Y-yeah, coming!” You quickly walked over, the gun still in your hand. The three of you went downstairs.
“Hey, hey, Rafe. Rafe. Rafe, Rafe, Rafe.” Kiara spoke as you walked down.
“What?”
“Hey, hey, let me see the phone. Let me see the phone.” Kiara asked him.
“Why?”
“Just give it to me.” He handed her the phone.
“Okay. Give me the gun.” He nodded to you.
You hesitated. “Why? So you can point it at me again? No.”
“Do you even know how to shoot it?”
“Have you met my dad?”
He scoffed, just turning back to the door.
“You ready?”
He opened up the door, hearing them talk.
“Okay, this way, this way.” Kiara went over into another room, taking a picture.
“Come on.” You told her.
“Kie, what are you doing? Let go! Come on!”
“Hold on!” She sent the picture to herself and ran over to the two of you, shutting the door.
The three of you were outside now, rafe peeking from behind.
“I got an idea. Come on, come on!” Kiara spoke, running. You both caught on and tried to catch up to the moving truck.
“They’re slowing down, come on, come on!”
Kiara grabbed on, and so did Rafe, but you fell behind. Rafe held his hand out, you grabbing it and hopping up, the both of your eyes meeting for a moment before looking at the back.
A man sat, Rafe quickly grabbing him and punching him. The two fought, Rafe eventually throwing him off.
“Ouch.” You winced. “He’s gonna have some serious fucking road rash.”
Rafe exhaled, panting and turning back to the both of you.
The three of you hid under some tarp while they inspected the back. You were in the middle of the two, you facing Rafe. He stared at you, and you stared back.
And for a moment in Rafe’s mind, it was you waking up next to him, a small smile gracing your features and his own. Of course that’s all it was, a figment of his imagination. His dreams.
He fucked that all up when he pulled that gun to your head.
You didn’t miss the way his lips curled up when you saw him get lost in his fantasies.
When the truck started moving again, you all came up from under it.
“I told you we just had to work together. All right, listen, I’m headed out to my boat, okay? I can give you guys a ride, drop you wherever, somewhere safe. One thing though.”
Kiara sighed, staring ahead again.
“Look at me. I know your friends are on the island, and my sister. I’m not helping them. All right? I can’t trust them, okay? I’ll give you both a ride, not them, okay?”
Kiara nodded. But you furrowed your eyebrows.
“Not my brother?”
“Especially not him.”
You turned to Kiara, she had a look on her face.
“We just want to get off the island.” She said, but you knew she had a plan.
“That’s smart.“ he spoke, his eyes lingering on you.

The phone rings while you nervously worry your teeth over your bottom lip and wait for the line to pick up. What you are doing could be a dumb idea, or it could be a great idea. You are not sure yet.
"Hello?" Sarah's voice filters through the car speakers.
"Hi."
"What's up?" She asks, and you can hear the smile in her voice. "I'm glad you called me."
"I am actually about to pull up to the Chateau. Wondered if we could have girl talk for a minute?"
"Oh!" You hear a door open and close. "Umm… yeah, but everyone is here."
You exhale, hands tightening on your steering wheel. "Well…"
"You should still come… we can go for a walk or something. I want to talk to you and see you. I don't… lunch the other day-"
"Sarah," you interrupt her. "I know."
She exhales before letting out a nervous laugh. "Still come, please?"
"I am turning onto the dirt road now."
"Great!"
"See you in a second," you reassure her before hanging up. "I can do this, I can do this," you whisper over and over as you get closer and closer to the Chateau. Exactly like she said, you spot the Twinkie, Kiara's car, and JJ's bike. Pope would likely have caught a ride with one of them. "Great."
You park and turn off the engine, pressing your hands to your thighs and trying to calm your panicked heart.
"I can do this." You whisper, squeezing your eyes shut a moment. "I have to do this."
Knuckles knock on the window of your door, and you open your eyes to see Pope standing there. You ease the door open to peek at him through the small gap.
"Pep talk?"
"Uh-huh."
He chuckles. "It'll be fine, come on."
You resume running your teeth over your bottom lip until Pope's hand finds yours, and he squeezes while walking to the backyard. Being nervous and still upset is a bad combination, and you know that, but until you talk to Sarah or someone else about this situation, you will stay that way.
"Scale of 1 to 10, how bad?" You whisper.
"Six…maybe eight."
You start to turn away to go back to your car, but he grips your hand tighter, stopping you both in your tracks.
"You've done nothing wrong." He says quickly. His hands are gripping your shoulder, and he stares down at you. "You were honest and direct. Which is a first for you, but if it was Kiara or JJ, they would not think twice."
"Okay," you sigh in relief that you have someone on your side, and he is right. All his points are valid and accurate. You wrap your arms around his waist in a hug murmuring a quiet thank you. He hugs your back, patting your shoulder.
"We've got to stick together, right?"
"Right." You let him go and step back. "Let's do this."
He grins at you before leading the way. His hand brushes yours again once you step into view of the other four. All four heads turn and Sarah smiles brightly, hopping out of her chair to hug you.
"It's okay," she whispers in your ear, rocking you back and forth in a tight hug.
You nod, letting her go and moving forward.
John B lifts his hand to smack yours when you pass him. "Missed you. Where you been?"
"Around."
"With Rafe," JJ mutters, stabbing a stick into a muddy spot by his boot. Kiara rolls her eyes at him, but her gaze never meets yours. She lays in the hammock, and JJ lingers close by. They were likely sharing it before you arrived.
"Rafe?" John B asks, and you are fully aware that he is playing devil's advocate now. Sarah slaps him on the back of the head, solidifying your opinion even more. He winces but continues to look at you. "Really?" His nose scrunches slightly, and you fight back a laugh at how endearing it is.
"Not really," you remark as you sit in one of the empty lawn chairs. You can tell they do not believe you, so you opt for honesty. "Maybe a little."
He bobs his head, processing your words while rocking back onto the back legs of his chair. "Why?"
You shrug. "He is helping me with something. What is with the questions?"
"Are you dating?"
"What are these questions?" You laugh, trying to stave off the panic that feels like it is piercing you between the ribs. They have been discussing you and Rafe in your absence.
John B shrugs, and the front legs of his chair hit the ground. "Dunno."
JJ speaks up then, and you can feel his stare burning into your side profile. "He's a kook."
"So was Sarah…" you mumble, gesturing to the blonde with a sympathetic smile. "And we still gave her a shot."
"Fair," she whispers, pursing her lips.
"But this is Rafe!" His voice grows louder, and he shifts to lean closer toward your direction.
"Also, fair," Sarah adds, frowning at the idea that her brother could become a pogue like her.
You stay silent, gaze darting away from Sarah and John B down to your hands. They tremble, but you refuse to grip anything solid to hide the reaction they are pulling from you like you are tempted to do. "I'm not sure what you want to hear right now."
"Tell us it's not true!" JJ jumps up, waving his arm in a sweeping gesture for the group assembled. "Tell us that it is a prank!"
"But it's not."
He groans, running his hand through his hair. "Why won't you look at me?"
You lift your chin then and meet his gaze. Tears collect in your eyes, and you swallow the hurtful words you want to throw at him. "Happy?"
"No!"
You shrug, looking away then. This is a losing battle with all five of them present, and your emotions waver on the edge. "I should probably go."
"No!" Pope, Sarah, John B, and Kiara shout together. You flinch, your hands tightening around your thighs, despite not wanting to do so.
"Stay. We need to talk about this!" Sarah begs, moving closer.
"About what?" You ask, looking at her as a tear falls down your cheek. "How you all expect me to stay the quiet, timid little girl that never thinks for herself or goes after what she wants?"
Sarah frowns. "That's not… no!"
"Well, that's what it feels like," you respond, standing as well. "You are all supposed to be my best friends." Your eyes cut to JJ. "You are supposed to be my very best friend, and it feels like you do not care about me, not really."
"That's not true," JJ says, shaking his head. His face screws up in frustration. "Never has been!"
Reaching up, you wipe away the tears and exhale. "Feels like it to me."
"We just don't think Rafe is healthy," Kiara finally speaks up from the hammock. "You've been different since your birthday and…."
"Because I'm standing up for myself!" You cut her off. "You guys lied to me for three weeks!" You gesture between her and JJ. "You lied to all of our faces! You keep secrets! You broke our rules!"
JJ starts to talk, his panic getting the best of him, but you lift your hand to stop him.
"Best friends don't do that!" You state, more tears starting to spill over. "Did you even notice I left the party?!" You look at each of them. "Any of you?!"
No one says anything, and you laugh, shaking your head.
"I left my own birthday party, and not a single one of you noticed." You look at Sarah. "I want to talk, but I can't do this… not here, not now."
She closes the small space between you, gripping your wrist. "Please don't leave. Not like this."
"I'll be fine," you murmur, squeezing her hand in yours.
"Are you dating him?" JJ asks, and you close your eyes, dropping your head.
Sarah shifts her weight, and you can sense the tension thickening in the air. "JJ! Not now."
"Then when?!" He asks, a humorless laugh bubbling up. "When we've already lost her!"
"Guys," John B starts talking while getting to his feet, but the nail is already in the coffin. The wounds are too fresh and deep.
"Go fuck yourself, JJ!" You snap at him. "Because honestly, if you were my friend, a true best friend, then you would not give a shit about who I dated if I was happy! Because that is what a friend does. That is what I am trying to do for you, but you are making it so fucking hard!"
"Okay, easy," Sarah whispers, her arm circling your waist to keep you away from JJ.
"This isn't solving anything!" Kiara shouts and turns to JJ. "We need to be reasonable and listen to each other."
"I am listening!" He yells, and Kiara shakes her head, the disappointment clear on her face.
"Guys," Pope and John B both try to calm the chaos, but it is too late. Hell's gates are open, and there is no going back.
"You're my family, all of you," you say quickly, looking at each of them in the face, and fresh tears well up. "And I love you more than anything, but I don't feel loved. Not right now." You remove Sarah's arm from your waist and step away from the small circle of chairs and your friends. Your eyes cut to JJ and Kiara as they stand close together. "And you both can go to hell with your hypocrisy."
You leave without another word. Sarah's mouth drops open in surprise, and Pope shakes his head, looking away from the newest couple. John B groans, pressing his hands to his face.
Without waiting for someone to stop you or even giving them a chance to try to stop you, you leave the Chateau behind and attempt to focus on where you are going. Tears blur your vision, and ragged breaths escape as the panic swallows you whole. You barely make it a mile before you have to pull over on the shoulder to try to calm yourself.
Your cell phone ringing breaks the quiet, and you silence the call before dropping your head onto the steering wheel. You had done it. You had sealed and buried your childhood friendships. The tension had come to the surface and snapped before your very eyes. The phone rings again, and you groan, answering it without looking.
"What?!" You snap. "I'm not coming back!"
"Whoa, pretty girl," Rafe's voice breaks through your panicked thoughts. "You okay?"
"No."
He can hear the upset and panic coating your voice. There is shuffling on his end and a faint 'Where you going, Country Club?'. "What happened?"
"Long story," you whisper, closing your eyes, teardrops hitting your thighs. "I don't want to talk about it over the phone."
"Where are you?"
"Side of the road."
He groans, and you hear a car door open and close.
"I'll be fine, Rafe. What do you need?"
"I got something for you. I was going to bring it by."
You laugh and open your eyes to see the droplets of tears littering your jean shorts and the skin of your thighs.
"What's funny?"
"Nothing," you mumble, closing your eyes again. "I would rather not go home right now. Meet somewhere?"
"Sure," he says, and you can hear him driving. "Parking lot from your birthday?"
"Oh, god," you groan, and he laughs. Flashbacks of the night fill your head, and you bite your lip, thighs pressing together at the phantom feel of his touch on you. "See you in a few minutes."
"All right."
It does not take long for you to find one another. You sit on the trunk of your car until Ward's truck pulls into the mostly empty lot. The setting sun is ending many beachgoers' perfect day, and soon you will have the beach to yourselves. He steps into view seconds after parking next to you. His hand brushes your leg, his head tipping to the side while he looks at you.
"This is twice now that you've cried leaving John B's and been on the side of the road."
You sniffle and reach up to wipe away the tears.
His knuckles knock against your knee. "Talk to me."
You exhale, dropping your hands onto the trunk beside your thighs. The metal is warm from the sun beating down on it all day. "We got in an argument, and I may have told JJ and Kie to go to hell."
Rafe laughs, his eyes crinkling before he shakes his head. "I really am rubbing off."
You roll your eyes. "I'm not proud of myself."
"I am!"
You frown, looking away to watch a family load into a minivan. Sunburnt kids, boogie boards, and beach gear are all in tow. You smile a little and try to ignore the promising sting of fresh tears stirring up.
He moves closer, his abdomen pressing against your knees. "I have something for you."
"Yeah?" You ask before turning your attention back to him.
He nods, fishing in his jean pocket before producing a bag of weed. He drops it on your lap and grins at you. "Just in time, huh?"
You nod, closing your eyes for a moment. "Who did you get this from?"
"Barry," he mutters, his fingertips skating over your exposed thighs. "Do you want to do some now?"
"On the beach."
He grins before pocketing the bag and helping you down from your trunk. He leads the way to the beach, and you follow. You smile politely at the tourists leaving until he finds a secluded spot nestled among some driftwood.
He watches you fish around in your purse until you produce a bowl, grinder, and lighter. He chuckles, brushing his hand over his mouth. "You come prepared."
"I like weed," you mutter, plucking the baggie from his other hand. "Makes me feel less anxious and clears the bad thoughts."
"Bad thoughts?"
You nod, putting what you need in the grinder before turning the lid back and forth.
"What bad thoughts?"
You exhale, meeting his curious eyes. "That I'm not good enough. That I don't deserve to live sometimes…" You swallow. "That I'm failing and not doing anything right. That everyone is going to leave me." You let out a harsh laugh. "But it looks like I've pushed them away instead."
Rafe frowns, studying you. "I have bad thoughts too."
You stare at him, waiting for him to continue.
"Umm…" He looks down at the sand, his arms resting on his knees. "Sometimes I think things… a-and I know they aren't okay. I'm not okay. I thought I was. But I keep having these thoughts in my head, and I can't control them. I try," he presses his hands to his face. The heel of his palms press to his eyes before he drops them and looks at you. "I'm afraid of what is going to happen."
You reach across to touch him. Your hand is grasping his.
"I'm afraid of what I am going to do."
You steady your breathing and tighten your hand on his. "I think talking about it is the first step."
He nods, agreeing. "I should get clean. I should get my shit together."
"Rafe," you sigh and look back at him. "You can. I know you can."
He smiles a little before laughing harshly. "But my father doesn't think I can."
You huff, going back to your task. "Ward sometimes gets in his own way."
"What do you mean?"
You shrug, filling the bowl. "Look at Sarah. She's a pogue now because he did not listen to her. And you… you're trying to figure it out, and he keeps pressuring you instead of listening to you."
Rafe's lips press into a thin line, and you worry you have crossed the line, but then he clears his throat. "I've told him I'm not okay, but he says to 'man up.' So I'm trying to do that."
You smile weakly before you offer him the packed bowl and lighter. "Want the first hit?"
He takes it, and you watch him light it and inhale before passing it back to you. He blows it out a few seconds later and relaxes against the driftwood.
"Who knew?" You mutter before taking a hit. You copy his actions of exhaling and relaxing against the sun-bleached tree trunk. "The kook and pogue outcasts, becoming friends."
He laughs before shaking his head. "I'm not your friend, y/n."
You pout, but he reaches over and pokes your bottom lip.
"I'm your outlet."
"Outlet?" Your eyebrows scrunch together in confusion. "For drugs?"
He shrugs. "And sex, if you need it."
You laugh and drop your head onto his shoulder, enjoying the beginnings of your high. "I think that I want to date whoever I let fuck me first, Rafe."
He is silent for a moment, but his fingers continue to skate up and down your thigh and around your knee. "Date me."
"What?" You laugh and turn your face to look at him. Surprise is in your voice and expression.
He shrugs. "Why not? Might help get my dad off my case, and it'll piss your ex-best friends off."
You frown at the mention of your friends. You do not want to talk about it anymore. You would rather forget tonight happened for a little while. "Is this so you can 'pop my cherry'? Another notch on your bedpost?"
"No," he responds, brushing his knuckle against the hem of your shorts. "But when you are ready, I can do it. No notch."
You hum before taking another hit. "Okay." You supply after you exhale. "Two bad thoughts make a positive action, right?"
He laughs, slinging his arm around you and pulling you against him. "Maybe."
Tumblr media
"Why are we doing this?" You ask Rafe. It is too late to back out now as he leads you toward a kook house. A party is happening to celebrate someone's college acceptance.
Rafe shrugs. "I have party favors to sell and a new girlfriend to show off."
You snort at the last part, but your hand slides into his. Your fingers interlacing together right before you step through the main door.
"Rafe!" Kelce is first to greet him. "Where you been, man?"
"Had to get my girl," Rafe answers Kelce, clasping his hand and pulling him into a hug.
"Your girl?" Kelce questions, and Rafe tugs you forward. Kelce smiles. "I fucking knew it!"
You laugh, leaning into Rafe's side. His arm hooks around your shoulders as he grins proudly.
"Well, enjoy!"
"Hey!" Rafe grabs his arm quickly, pulling him back. He leans in, and you already know he is telling him about the party favors he brought. "Spread the word!" He tells him as Kelce walks backward with a smile and a thumb up in agreement. Rafe turns to you once Kelce is out of sight. His hands secure around your hips. "Want a drink?"
"Please." You smile up at him.
"Cool, umm…" He looks around and spots an empty patio loveseat on the deck. "Wait for me out there, all right?"
"Yep." You peck his lips before passing through the partygoers to take the loveseat. Once you are settled and people-watching, you notice Sarah and John B by a group of kooks you knew. Scarlet and Olivia are two of them. Olivia has it bad for Kelce, and he has never noticed, from what you can tell. Sarah's eyes connect with yours, and her lips part in shock. You lift your hand in an awkward wave, aware of how tense it is.
"Here you go." Rafe reappears at that time and holds out a cup for you. You take it and hum in appreciation at the fruity punch in the cup. "Careful, it's Ryn's secret recipe."
He takes the seat next to you, his arm hooking around your shoulders. You lean into his side, looking at the plastic bag he has dropped on the table.
"How much do you think you'll sell tonight?"
"I don't know."
You hum before glancing at Sarah and John B, who are both openly staring at you. "Your sister is here."
"Oh, yeah?" He asks, laughing a little before following where you are looking to see her. "And that pogue."
"John B," you offer before taking another sip.
"John B," he repeats before tapping your chin. You tip your head to look at him, and his lips press to yours. His intentions are not intended to be good for the pair watching you, and you know that, but you also know no matter what you do now, the pogues will think what they want to.
You kiss him back, your hand skating over the line of his jaw. His lips turn up against yours in a devilish grin. His hands sneak under your skirt, his fingertips possessive against the skin of your thighs. You moan into his mouth when his thumb brushes between your thighs. Your fingers weave through his blond locks, tugging him closer. It is indecent, and you cannot help yourself.
"Are you serious right now?!" Topper's voice cuts through the haze of Rafe's mouth on yours. The kissing ends, and Rafe smirks at his friend. "Since when?"
You shrug, looking at Kelce coming through the door, a couple of pretty girls on his arms and trailing behind him. You smile at him. It is no secret that you prefer Kelce over Topper. Kelce had never been crass or actively rude to you like Topper had.
"Yesterday."
Topper accepts Rafe's answer without another word.
"Come sit with me," Rafe mumbles against your jaw while his arms hook around your waist and pull you onto his lap. "Give Kelc some room."
You hum, leaning back against his chest. You can feel how your indecent behavior has affected him, so you tease him a little. "Also, to hide your boner?"
He laughs against your shoulder. His lips warm against your skin.
"Kelce!" Topper clasps his hand before Kelce throws himself onto the couch beside you. He smirks, admiring you on Rafe's lap.
"You two look good." His attention shifts to Topper again. Kelce is gauging his friend and how he feels about Rafe and you, but you do not care what the blond kook thinks.
You roll your eyes and sip from your cup before your gaze cuts to Sarah and John B across the room. John B is clinging to her arm, trying to keep her with him and not storming after you. You can read her lips easily as she states that she only wants to talk to you.
John B visibly groans and releases her.
"Sarah is coming," you warn Rafe, and he groans loudly in annoyance, shuffling you around on his lap as he tucks his product away. He mutters something about her snitching and tells Kelce to hang out for a minute.
"Hey!" Sarah says, dropping onto the armrest of the chair that is adjacent to the loveseat. Her expression does not match her happy tone. Instead, she looks like she is expecting answers. "What's going on?"
"Just hanging out," Kelce answers before either you or Rafe.
Rafe's arm snakes around your waist. His chest presses into your back as he leans forward to collect his drink. "What do you want, Sarah?"
"To talk to my best friend."
He can tell you are on edge and nervous about being around them again, especially now that you are officially together. Your hands grip his free hand that rests on your thigh.
Rafe chuckles, shaking his head. "From how I hear it, you guys are not treating her like friends, much less best friends."
You exhale, pushing your hand onto his thigh. "Rafe."
"No," she says, looking down at her shoes. "He's right."
You watch her, ignoring the sting of yesterday's argument drudging back up. "John B does not look comfortable alone."
She frowns, glancing at her boyfriend, and he shakes his head, leaning back against the wall. "He wants to talk to you, but…." Her gaze flickers over the three kooks.
"I'll come over there," you offer. John B and Sarah were trying, so you would too. You pat Rafe's arm to signal for him to let you go.
"Don't go far," he says into your ear, squeezing you back against him one last time. "I don't trust them."
And then his arm falls away, and Sarah helps you to your feet. Glancing back at Rafe as you head for John B, you notice a frown on his face while he watches you until Topper and Kelce demand his attention.
You can do this. This time it would be only two pogues and not five.
"John B."
He smiles at you, shaking his head. "I don't like not being friends."
"Me either," Sarah adds quickly. "No one does."
You frown at them before downing the rest of your drink quickly. "I'm not enjoying it either."
"Then can we talk about it?" She asks, her hand gripping yours. "Please!"
"Sure."
She exhales a breath of relief. "So… are you dating my brother?"
You stare at her and then John B, gauging them before clearing your throat. "Yes."
John B groans, eyes closing, and his head falls. Sarah frowns at him before turning her attention back to you.
"Since that day JJ saw you?"
"Yesterday, actually." You cross your arms over your waist. Your nails bite into the soft inside of your arms. "After the argument, we met up, talked, and realized that we like one another."
She nods, licking her lips. "Are you sure it is a good idea?"
"No," you laugh, glancing over your shoulder at him, but he is forming lines and collecting payment. "Probably the worst idea, but I need something different."
She leans closer to you, her voice dropping. "Is this because of Kie and JJ?"
"No."
Her eyebrows raise in disbelief at your statement, and you groan.
"No, it has nothing to do with them and everything to do with me."
John B clearly knows what you are talking about, even with Sarah whispering as he clears his throat. "JJ is just as upset as you. I've never seen him like this."
You frown, eyes darting away from John B to the floor. "I can't please everyone."
"But you can talk to me," JJ's voice states from behind you, and you turn to see all three missing pogues behind you.
Pope moves closer first, his hand brushing your arm. "You okay?"
You nod once, glancing over his shoulder to JJ, who is watching you with concern. "Umm…" You exhale. "I don't know what you want to talk about since no one wants to listen to me."
JJ glances at Kiara before he drops her hand and moves closer. "We're worried."
"I know."
"Then help us understand," he offers, his touch light as he grazes your wrist with his thumb. "You're my best friend, y/n. Please."
You close your eyes and exhale. You open them to look at JJ as you deliver the answer. He seems to know already but hates the idea of it. "I'm dating Rafe. We hung out a few times and decided to give it a go last night."
JJ steps back, his expression shifting to annoyed and frustrated. "He's not safe."
"You don't know him."
He gapes at you, and Kiara shakes her head, looking at Sarah for help. He ignores the silent pleas for help from Kiara. "Yes, we do! How many times has he belittled us? How many times has he hurt one of us? Do you get th-"
"Pogues," Rafe's voice cuts into JJ's rant as he moves behind you. His cologne and body heat wrapping around you. His hand finds your hip, and he looks at JJ over your head. "I thought this was a kook party."
"We stopped by to see our friend," Kiara spits out. Her gaze shifts to you, silently pleading for you to walk away from him, but you do not.
He nods, looking down at you, and you look up at him. "Ready to go?"
"I think so," you state before shifting your attention to Sarah. "I'd like to talk just us, one-on-one, eventually."
"We will." She watches you with her brother before glancing at John B, who moves forward and blocks JJ from moving any closer. If he did get closer, you are sure a fight would start. The rage in his ocean eyes and the tight fists tucked against his side tell you enough.
"We should go," you whisper before taking Rafe's hand. "I'll see you guys around." You offer with a small wave.
"You pogues enjoy the party, all right?" Rafe taunts and lets you lead him away from the small cluster that continues to build with tension.

Firecracker
JJ Maybank x reader
Inspired by the prompt ‘you have no idea how much I want you right now’
So much for JJ’s ‘deny, deny, deny’ way of thinking, all she’d had to do was bat her eyelashes and kiss that one spot on his neck a few times to make him blab all about what Pope had done to Rafe’s boat. Trying to be reasonable, she’d told him revenge and violence weren’t the answer…until she saw Popes face as they went to watch the OBX movie series. She’d felt the anger fill her body and winced at the unfamiliar feeling.
“Just saw Rafe, and he said, and I quote ‘tell your boy we know what he did’” Kiara dropped into her seat staring down the two boys and Noa, all of them avoiding her gaze, the former two jumping into their own scattered conversation.
“Noa…” Kiara tried.
“Guys maybe we should just tell her-“ Noa tried to involve herself.
“You told her?” Pope rolled his eyes, “so much for deny, deny, deny. You’re soft as fuck for her” he glanced at Noa who adorned a guilty smile and back at JJ who shrugged as if to say ‘so what’
“What if Rafe talking about?” Kaira gritted her teeth, tired of being left in the dark.
“Kie…it might go down tonight” JJ started.
“J!” Noa facepalmed.
“Might go down tonight? What did y’all do?” Kie pinched the bridge of her nose mumbling “fucking idiots” when she got no response.
Noa often trusted her gut, after all it brought her to the friends she now called family and brought her JJ, the love of her life. Which is why when she started to feel off she spoke up.
“J I don’t feel too good, I feel like somethings gonna happen” she whispered in his ear, him basking in the way her breath tickled his neck.
“M’sure it’s nothing baby, it’s probably all the sugar” he nodded to the empty sweet packets lay at her feet and turned his head to press a kiss against her temple. It’s probably the sugar, she tried to tell herself he was right and focus on the movie.
“JJ” Pope whispered over the gunshots in the movie, JJ just nodded his head in response eyes on the screen.
“Gotta take a piss” Pope wanted to groan at how stupid he sounded wanting his friend to come with him.
“Hold it” JJ absentmindedly responded.
“I can’t hold it…I drank too much soda” any other time Pope would’ve laughed at the situation but when Kiara came back with those Pepsis and he drank one after the other, going to the bathroom was not on his mind.
“Just go with him, J” Noa said the other side of him, turning round smiling apologetically at those who could hear their talking whilst looking for Rafe and his goons, “they’re blocking the bathroom just go behind the tree there”
JJ and Pope looked at one another before nodding weakly. “Where y’all going?” Kie asked confused when both boys stood, “bathroom…gotta ring it out” JJ replied as if it was obvious.
“Are they gonna hold it for each other?” Kie looked at Noa with a sarcastic glint in her eye causing the girl to let out a quiet laugh both at the words spoken and the way the boys ducked down to try avoid getting in people’s way.
Sitting there without JJ by her side the feeling got worse, especially when they were taking too long for her liking to come back.
“Hey,” she leant over their chairs to talk to Kie, “I’ve got cramp…just gonna stretch my legs” she stood and did the awkward crouch too heading in the direction of the tree before Kiara even got to respond.
Although she felt a little weird when she realised they were indeed still pissing, she bit back a laugh hearing Popes groan of pleasure “this feels better than a blowjob”
JJ snorted, “like you know how that feels”
“Okay, this feel better than what I imagine a blowjob to feel like.“ Pope paused for a moment, “does it?”
JJ let out a quiet whistle, “nah man, nothing compares to that feeling. Well almost nothing…Noa does this thing with her tongue-“ he lowered his voice and she heard both boys jump when she made her presence known after hearing their flies zip
“What thing, honey” she spoke, giggling at the speed both of them turned around and the way JJ’s cheeks gained a pink tinge at being caught.
“Nothing” he smiled innocently watching his girl look back around the tree to check on Kie whispering a quick “tell you later” to Pope who nodded eagerly.
“Uh…guys” Noa cleared her throat as Rafe headed towards them.
“What’s up Pogues…pretty girl” he acknowledged them all watching in amusement as the shorter girl took two steps back as to not crane her neck.
“What’s up Rafe” she took control. ‘Always the pacifist’ Pope and JJ thought unaware to the rage that was filling her body once again.
JJ pulled her back as the three of them headed behind the movie screen.
“I just wanna talk” Rafe claimed.
“Bullshit” Noa huffed almost to herself, falsely clearing her throat when Rafe looked at her unamused.
“That was some nice work you did on my boat” Topper walked forward slightly.
“I don’t know what you mean” deny, deny, deny
“Not so burly without a gun, now are you” Rafe baited JJ over Noa’s shoudler, JJ pushing her behind him “take one more step I’ll blow your prepubescent face off” he squared up.
Too focused on trying to calm JJ down she didn’t even notice Pope had bit the bait until he head butted Topper square in his face instantly regretting it holding his own nose. JJ let out a “that’s my boy” and slipped out of Noa’s grasp punching Kelce in the face over and over until Rafe jumped on him too. She stood there pleading for them to stop ignoring her own rage building again until Kelce held JJ while Rafe delivered punch after punch to his body.
This was the moment that Noa realised, sometimes violence is the answer.
Giving into the rage she stepped forward feeling adrenaline pump through her veins, she grabbed Rafe’s shoulder with all her strength turning him around and punched him straight in his nose relishing in the cracking noise it made as she did. Everyone paused for just a second mouths gaping open as the girl breathed before Kiara jumped on Toppers back and JJ began fighting back harder. Rafe stood up angrier than before pulling Kie off Topper’s back with a warning to stay out of it before heading straight to Noa and shoving her off from where she was trying to hurt Kelce, enough to get him off JJ and shoving her down “stupid bitch” he spat, nose dripping with blood.
“Don’t you fucking touch her” JJ struggled watching Rafe stand over the girl he loved. Noa saw her opportunity and she took it kicking her leg up and hitting Rafe between his legs making him hunch over just as fire lit up the movie screen causing all of them to separate at the attention that would soon be on them if they didn’t move quick.
“Let’s get out of here” Rafe wiped his bloody nose still not stood fully straight, Kelce released a gasping JJ whilst Pope also tried to catch his breath, “I’d watch your back” he pointed his stare at Noa hating the way the fierce look in her eyes didn’t disappear at his threat.
“Look at you and then look at me. I think you should be the one watching yours” she bit back smirking when Topper and Kelce had to pull him away leaving the four Pogues alone each helping the other stand up.
JJ headed straight to Noa whilst Kie and Pope looked each other over. He quickly checked Noa for injuries he may have missed feeling satisfied when the only blood on her was her split knuckles.
“So much for violence isn’t the answer, my little peacemakers a firecracker” he managed to grin through his split lip with wicked glint in his eye.
“Okay maybe I was wrong…sometimes it’s the answer. What? Don’t look at me like that, I wasn’t gonna stand there and watch them do that to you” she felt the adrenaline wear off as the pain in her hand kicked in.
“I’m not looking at you like anything” he reached up and brushed his thumb on her jaw and slightly onto her neck.
“JJ” she gave him the look.
“Okay okay…I know now’s probably not the right time but you have no idea how much I want you right now” he looked straight in the eye fighting another painful grin.
“Seriously J?!” She breathed a laugh.
“What? You expect to see my sweet girl breaking Rafe Cameron’s nose for me and to not get turned on? C’mon firecracker you hold my hand sometimes and that’s enough”
“JJ…” she groaned and put her forehead on his chest quickly moving it when he let out a wince.
“C’mon Romeo, let’s get you fixed up” she reached and pressed a kiss to the corner of his lips avoiding the cut toes tingling when his grip on her tightened slightly.
“Oooo playing nurse…kinky”

---------------------------------------
Words: 1.6k
Wind rustled through your hair as you walked up the boardwalk, the color of the sun setting into your skin and hair, and the sand dunes slowly changing, as they always did. You smile backwards as the sun began its descent towards the water, pausing in the middle of the nearly deserted boardwalk for a moment to watch it. Finally turning back towards the parking lot, you realize how hungry you are, and the fact that you hadn’t eaten since noon. Pulling your (slightly) see-through sundress more securely over your bathing suit, you walk more hastily down the steps and across the gravel parking lot to your car.
It’s an old thing, given to you by your father. “Take care of what's left of it,” he had said as he handed you the keys. You remember having complained about the dent in the back bumper, the chipping red paint on the sides where the door had been slammed, one too many times, and the rusting around the wheels, but it still was better than nothing. Now, at least, you could go places, have fun, and enjoy the freedom you had always begged your parents for.
You get in and turn on the engine, having to try it a few times before it finally gives in. The truck starts loudly, but quiets after a moment, soon slowing to a purr to blend in with the quiet wind that is coming in through the open windows. Backing out of the parking lot and beginning to drive down a log stretch of road, bordered by palm trees on either side, you wonder whether your father will be in the mood to make you something. You had very little left in the pantry, and he barely had the energy to shop anymore; and you barely had the time.
Today had, of course, been the exception, but you had realized years ago, that if you didn’t allow yourself to relax once in a while, the cup would spill over, like bubbles in a bottle of champagne. And so, once a month, you gave yourself a day. A day to do nothing, if that’s what you wanted; a day that wouldn’t count the next morning when you got out of bed. It would be as if it had never happened, and you could continue your work as usual.
The first few times you had done this, you had found it hard to completely rid your mind of tasks and responsibilities, but as the years passed, and you had more of these days, it was easier to completely clear your mind of any and all thoughts. And so now, as you continue to drive down the long road towards home, you let yourself enjoy the last moments of the day.
When you are about half-way home, you stop the car, pulling over onto the side of the road to think. At the moment, the last thing you wanted to do was cook, and you were almost positive that your father either wouldn’t be awake, or wouldn’t be sober, when you opened the door, so you slowly assessed your options. You could go home, and grab a granola bar out of the cabinet to hold you over until breakfast the next morning, you could see what stores were still open and spend the ten dollars you kept in the back of your phone case on a pre-made salad, or-
You look up from the floor of your car, where you had been staring, blankly. Or, you could go see Kiara, and hope that she hadn’t thrown away the leftover food from that day yet. Turning back onto the road and making a three-point turn to head back a couple hundred feet to Kiara’s turn off, you can’t stop hoping that Kiara’s dad had turned on the frier that day.
You arrive at The Wreck only five minutes later and are very happy to see that even though the closed sign is up on the door, that the lights are still on throughout the restaurant. Turning off the engine and hopping out of your truck, you walk to the door and knock quietly, hoping not to disturb anyone too much. Kiara’s dad opens it, smiling slightly. He and her mother had always been fond of you, and you of them, especially since you had known each other since you were toddling around the beach in diapers.
“Good evening Mr. Carrera,” you greet him, smiling.
“Evening Y/N,” he says, reciprocating your smile, “what can I do for you?” Your expression turns slightly shyer as you look up at him again.
“Food?” You ask. He sighs, but the smile doesn’t leave his face.
“You’re in luck today, we have lots of fries.” You mentally high-five yourself for turning around when you did, and follow him through the restaurant, around tables and to the back, where you see Kiara reorganizing something in the freezer.
“Who was at the door dad?” She asks, not turning to look.
“Your friend, who apparently is about to die from starvation.” She turns questioningly, but a smile appears on her face when she sees you.
“You always seem to know when we have extras, don’t you?” she asks mockingly. “Seriously, it’s like a superpower or something.” Closing the freezer, she walks over to the fryers, and you follow her. Grabbing onto the handle and pulling a medium-sized bowl out from under the counter, she dumps the fries from both fryers into the bowl. “We’ve got plenty,” she says, then turning to her dad, she asks, “can I-”
“Yeah, sure. I’m sure I can finish up around here.” She hugs him and grabs your arm, leading you out the front door, with the bowl of fries under one arm.
She brings you out to the dock and the two of you sit down, swinging your legs over the side.
“So-,” she starts, grabbing a couple fries from the bowl and leaning back on her hand, “anything else bring you here, besides fries of course,” she side-eyes you, a smirk on her face.
“No?” you question, also taking some from the bowl, “what else would I be here for?”
“Oh, you know. Maybe some handsome blonde, or...” she pauses, turning to you.
“JJ?”
“Yes JJ.”
“Why would I be here for him?” you ask, but you can feel a soft blush creeping through your cheeks. The truth was, that even though you hadn’t specifically come here to see him, part of you always hopes that he will be here when you arrive. There had been times that this wish had even come true, but even when it had, you had rarely ever been brave enough to speak more than a couple sentences to him. You wouldn’t call yourself shy, necessarily, but around him, you were definitely more nervous than you normally were.
Instead of continuing to question you about it, especially after the blush had given you away, Kiara changed the subject. The two of you talked about turtles, surfing, and anything else that came to mind for the next twenty minutes or so, until you could hear the faint sound of a speedboat making its way through the water. As it came nearer, a smile spread across both of your faces, and you waved it closer in unison.
When the boat had parked, John B, Pope, and JJ, hoped off, John B and Pope each holding a bear, and JJ with his vape. Blowing out a puff of smoke, he looks down at you and Kiara, his eyes lingering on your face a few seconds longer. John B breaks the silence after a minute, glancing at you both.
“We came for food.”
“You and her both,” Kiara says, snickering, then, pushing the bowl backwards towards them, and turning around, her back to the water, she adds, “help yourself.” All three boys are sitting on the ground within a matter of seconds, and it doesn't take long for the large number of fries to be completely demolished. Licking his lips and fingers, Pope looks up at you.
“So, how’s your day off treating you?” You look up at him.
“Really nice so far,” you respond, smiling. You see JJ looking at you out of the corner of your eyes, but he looks away when he sees you notice him. “I’ve just been sitting on the beach all day.”
“Ahh, that’s the life,” Pope says, smiling back.
Conversation flows throughout the group for a while, before Kiara somehow manages to drag John B and Pope away to, as she had said, “look at something in the kitchen,” which leaves you and JJ alone by the water. Your legs are hanging off the edge, as they had been earlier, and you watch as the last slivers of the sun set below the horizon.
“Nice night,” JJ remarks, his voice quiet over the steady flow of the wind.
“Yeah,” you respond, not really knowing what else to say. It's quiet for another few minutes, before JJ gets up. You are about to ask him where he’s going when he holds out his hand for you to join him. You accept it, letting him pull you off the ground.
“Wanna go on the water?” You turn to look at the boat. Stress begins to make its way through your body, as you haven’t been on a boat in some time, but you push it away, remembering that today is a day to let loose and have fun.
“Sure,” you agree, and after he gracefully steps onto the boat, holds out his hand again to assist you on.

“IS THIS SPOT OKAY?” SARAH ASKED. She’d stopped in the tall-grass littered area marked “picnics” on the wooden sign we’d passed. I studied the area with a hand over my eyes, shielding them from the harsh sun that was beating down on us since this morning.
I was between the impromptu line we’d been walking in since we’d arrived at the springs, Sarah and Kiara in front of me while John B, Pope and JJ trailed towards the end.
Kie nodded, her bottom lip sticking out and eyebrows lifted in acceptance. “I think this is fine. Plus, we’re a fair distance from everything else.” She was right. We stood about equal distance from each of the activities, not that it mattered. Canoeing to the right, the waters that were safe to swim in to the left, and some kind of free-play zone in front of us — people playing volleyball, racing and some simply lounging in the area where the grass was sparse and revealed more sand.
Sarah nodded and set down the picnic basket, the rest of us plopping down on the ground in a makeshift circle and unloading the contents of the woven basket.
“What is all this shit? I thought you brought food. Y’know, mini burgers ‘n shit.” John B criticized as he examined the food we’d pulled out of the basket — chocolate covered strawberries, mini club sandwiches, cans of soda.
“It’s a picnic, you moron. Not a three-course meal.” Kie snapped back, eliciting an eye roll from the brunette boy.
“Besides, we probably don’t want to eat much right now anyway. We’re going to be swimming and stuff.” I added, cracking open a can of soda — the cold metal can already cooling off my body from the mere touch.
I was sitting next to Kie as she opened up one of the plastic containers holding a sandwich, Pope and John B next to her while JJ and Sarah were sitting to my left. I sipped on the carbonated drink as my eyes scanned the area.
It was pretty and pleasing to the eyes. Tall trees with beautiful hanging leaves — similar to willow trees, tall grass surrounding us, water and sand further out as people canoed, swam, and just had a great time overall. It was the perfect day for something like this — sunny and extremely hot.
We didn’t actually have plans today, for the record. But we decided to find something to do, seeing as it was our, what? Fourth day here? It seemed too early for a lazy day.
“So, what’s the plan?” Pope piped up, mouth full of grapes. Everyone looked at me, seeing as I had mentioned earlier that I had seen this particular attraction online before and knew a few of the activities we could engage in.
I shrugged nonchalantly, reaching for one of the triangle-cut sandwiches. “I thought we’d go canoeing first. None of us have done it before and it seems to be the leading attraction here.”
“I’m all in. As long as our personal tour guide is recommending it.” JJ joked. It provoked a small smile from me but it didn’t reach my eyes.
I was still reeling from the events of yesterday. Him wiping the sauce from the corner of my mouth, the eye contact…and the abrupt cut-off. It wouldn’t be such a big deal if I didn’t know what he was doing — JJ was avoiding confrontation, something he did all too well. I’m not an idiot. And neither is he. We were more than friends, that much was clear. And if JJ knew me at all, and he knows me better than almost anyone, he would know that I want answers as to what we are. I need them.
So, yeah. I was distancing myself from him a bit since the day started. Did he notice? Most likely. But maybe it was about time I started thinking less about why JJ was avoiding me and more about moving on and letting this whole fling-but-not-a-fling thing go. It wasn’t healthy for either of us and I don’t know how he felt but I felt ignored and played with in a sense. I don’t know how much longer I can continue to be friends with him and act like there was nothing there. Because it seemed like he’d keep this game up forever and I didn’t sign up for that.
JJ gave a confused expression at my lack of response but I averted my eyes elsewhere. “Well,” Kie chipped in. “-If we’re going canoeing we might as well hurry. The workers mentioned there’s a limited number of canoes so if we get there too late we’ll have to wait for another party to return.”
Everyone nodded in agreement, finishing off their sodas and snacks and stripping off their shirts and bottoms — revealing our bikinis and swim trunks underneath. The lack of clothing brought a welcomed cool to our slightly sweaty bodies as we folded our clothes and set them on the blanket to head off in the direction of the small boats.
ARRIVING AT THE EDGE OF THE WATER WHERE THE CANOES WERE, AN EMPLOYEE APPROACHED OUR GROUP WITH A BRIGHT SMILE. She was a beautiful dark-skinned girl with dark brown shoulder length hair that was bouncing with tight curls — a bright smile and wide-brown eyes adorning her round face. She was glowing under the sun as she waltzed over to us in a one-piece sporting the springs logo on the front.
“Hi there.” She stopped in front of us, fiddling with the blue whistle that was attached to a lanyard around her neck. “First time here?”. We all nodded in response. “Okay, great. Awesome. Uh- so unfortunately, we are all out of three-seaters so we only have two-seater canoes but on the bright side-” She surveyed our small group, her eyes lingering on Pope a little longer. “It looks like there’s an even number of you. So if you don’t mind, you can pair up and I can go retrieve the canoes for you.” She suggested.
We told her that was fine and she turned around to start dragging the canoes closer to the edge of the lake. I nudged Pope’s shoulder and he whipped his head around quickly.
“I think a certain cute lifeguard likes you.” The boy scoffed and ran a hand over his head, avoiding eye contact with me.
“No way.” He shook his head, staring at the girl as she struggled to drag the canoes by herself. “She’s like- wayy out of my league. I mean, she’s hot.”
I rolled my eyes and moved to stand behind him as the rest of our friends chatter mindlessly behind us. “First of all, stop selling yourself short.” I reprimanded, pulling his ear. “You’re attractive, Pope. And smart. You’re...a little awkward but we love you all the same,” He rolled his eyes at my teasing. “And plus, that hot girl over there, who by the way could use a helping hand with those canoes, gave you the most obvious heart eyes eyes known to man. So, stop standing here self-deprecating and help that hot employee bring our canoes over.”
“Oh, no. I can’t-” He protested as I pushed him farther towards the struggling girl. “Y/n…”
“Hey!” I called out in the direction of the girl who looked around our age. “My friend, Pope here, can help you out if you need a hand.”
She smiled, a slight blush rushing to her face. “Yeah, yeah. That’d be great. Thank you,” She tucked a strand of her curls behind her ears, sticking a hand out in Pope’s direction — who was, admittedly, standing awkwardly as if he had no clue what to do with his body. “I’m Mallory.”
Pope smiled back and shook her hand. “Pope.” He shut his eyes tightly in mild embarrassment. “But you already knew that…” She giggled and Pope cracked an eye open, surprised she didn’t immediately lose interest at his lack of laid-backness, and smiled at her before helping her move the canoes over to us, me making my way back to the group as they were now staring at me in bewilderment.
"What?"
“Did you just set Pope up?” Kiara asked, arms crossed over her chest — she was trying her best to hide a look of annoyance but it was shining through in the slightest of ways.
“Uh, yeah? Don’t act like we didn’t see her eye him up and down.” Everyone, except for Kie, nodded in agreement while John B and JJ muttered things like ‘finally’ and ‘that’s my boy’.
“They got the boats in the water. Might as well head over there.” Kie spoke shortly, walking over and away from us. What’s up with her?
“Wait, what about the pairs-”
“Already got it settled, gorgeous. You’re with me.” JJ winked before walking past me.
Great. Just great. I should’ve known.
AFTER MALLORY, THE SWEET EMPLOYEE, HAD EXPLAINED EVERYTHING TO US, WE GOT IN THE WATER. She had instructed us not to go past the bright red bowies set out in the water and that the canoe ride was purely for scenic value — no “horseplay”. JJ and I were behind the other two canoes that held the rest of our group — John B and Sarah in the middle, annoying his girlfriend by poking her with the paddle while Pope and Kie led the way, making idle conversation. It sparked a question in my mind.
“Is Kie alright?”
JJ turned to me, continuing to paddle lightly. “What do you mean?”
“She seemed kind of ticked off when I brought up Pope and the girl hitting it off.”
“You didn’t know?”
“Know what?”
JJ shook his head and chuckled lowly, tilting his head back up to flip the hair out of his face. “Kie still has a thing for Pope.” My eyes went wide and my mouth dropped open slightly.
“Wh- she broke things off with him.”
“And now she regrets it.
I sighed and let my shoulders fall. “If I’d known I wouldn’t have pushed him to make a move.”
“Why?”
“Well because, now Kie is probably pissed at me and I feel like a shitty friend.”
JJ shrugged and looked me in the eyes. “So? That’s not on you. We’re adults now. If Kie is pissed it’s no one’s fault but hers. She can’t expect him to wait forever. She has to toughen up or he’s going to move on.”
I laughed at this, a bit bitterly in all honesty, and turned away from him to look at the water as we continued to paddle and take in the scenery. He’s one to talk, I thought. JJ had basically voiced my own troubles, our troubles, vicariously through Pope and Kiara. If he could read them like a book with no problem, why was he struggling to do so with me? I practically had it written in sharpie on my forehead; “I am hopelessly in love with JJ Maybank.” If having your heart on your sleeve was a real, physical thing, mine was stapled to my bare wrist.
I felt a broad hand on my shoulder and returned my gaze to the blonde beside me who now held a look of concern. “Hey, you alright? You went silent on me.”
“I’m fine.” I replied, being short with him. I was being petty, I know. He doesn’t even know that I’m upset and if he does he has no clue why. But I just can’t bring myself to care thinking about all the times JJ has made me feel that exact same feeling — confusion.
“Y/n,”
“I’m fine, JJ.” I snapped at him a bit. Taking a deep breath, I met his eyes. “Sorry, J. I didn’t mean to- I just thought about something. Don’t worry about it.” I sent him a reassuring smile. Nudging my head forward in the direction of our friends who were now more than a few feet ahead of us, I spoke once more, “C’mon. We’re too far behind.”
He nodded but the look in his eyes was hesitant. I felt like everything was coming to the surface and I don’t know how much more time we have to play this game of back and forth before I fly off the handle.
AFTER WE WERE DONE WITH CANOEING, WE HEADED OVER TO THE SWIM AREA. It was a beautiful lake and if you were able to swim back far enough, you could reach the soft, trickling waterfall — that was apparently a popular photo site for visitors Mallory claimed, the girl stuck with us after informing us that her shift was over and Pope invited her to hang out with us before she had to leave.
It was cooling down but the water still held a nice warmth to it from the sun that was present earlier in the day.
We've been having a great time so far. Everyone seemed to hit it off with Mallory and to top things off, she was attending the same college as me. As the day dwindled and we fooled around in the glistening body of water, the people surrounding us decreased by the minute — soon leaving only us in the water as any remaining guests sat on the grass.
I noticed Kie had drifted away from the group, brows pinched close together as she was lost in her thoughts when I waded up to her, setting a gentle hand on her shoulder. “You okay?”
She rolled her eyes and looked down at the water. “I’m trying to be.”
I sighed and wound one of my arms around her shoulders. “‘M sorry, Kie. I wish you would’ve told me you still had a thing for him.”
Her head lifted from my shoulder swiftly as her eyes went huge, before squinting at me. “How did you- I am never telling JJ anything ever again.” She grumbled under her breath, head falling to my shoulder once again as we waded slowly.
“He has a point, though. If what he said to you was anything like what he said to me, then he’s right. You shooed him off, Kie. He wanted you, badly. You can’t be mad that he’s moving on or at least trying to.”
She scoffed. “Yeah, well maybe JJ should take a page out of his own book.” I winced at her harsh tone, knowing the jab was directed at me in a sense as well. She sighed and squeezed my hand that was draped over her shoulders. “Sorry. That was rude.”
I shrugged. “It’s fine. You’re right. I mean, it was still kind of rude but I get it.”
“You are too. Right, I mean. I don’t even think I’m in love with him or anything like you are with JJ. But I did genuinely like Pope at some point. I guess it’s hard to see someone make him smile so easily in less than an hour than how I tried to for weeks.”
“At least you’re self-aware.” I joked, both of us giggling. “But I’ll have you know that I think you and Mallory would hit it off really well. She’s part of this beach clean-up program and there’s some open spots.”
I felt the brown-haired girl smile against my shoulder, lifting her head up, my arm slipping from her shoulders. She shook herself off and took a deep breath. “You’re right. I’m Pope’s friend. And I need to act like it. I’m happy for him.” She smiled genuinely, small but genuine.
I held my arm out for her to hook her own through mine, which she did with a bright smile causing one to break out on my own face. We made our way back over to the group where they were all still caught up in a conversation and getting to know Mallory, Kie unraveling her arm from mine and joining in.
“What’d you say to her?” A gravelly voice spoke from behind me, startling me. I twirled around to find JJ looking down at me — shirtless and hair hanging over his face while his signature shark tooth necklace dangling in front of his toned chest.
“Nothing, really. Basically what you told me. That she has to pretty much let him move on and for her to do the same.” JJ smiled at me admiringly and slung one toned arm over my frame.
“When did you become so wise?” The boy teased as he lightly shook me back and forth in a playful manner.
I forced out a small laugh. “When I started to relate to Kie more than I thought I could.” I mumbled.
His playful smile dropped a bit and his eyebrows pulled themselves together. “What do you mean by that?” Looking up at him, I shook my head and shrugged my shoulders under the weight of his arm.
“Nothing.” He raised a curious brow as if to ask ‘really?’ and I plastered a smile on my cheeks. “I mean it. Honestly.”
“If you say so...” He still looked ambivalent but he let it go.
“Guys?” Sarah spoke amidst the group of us, standing closer to the shore with a group of 3 girls standing behind her. None of us had even noticed that she’d drifted off. “You up for a game of volleyball before we hit the road? These girls need more people to play with.”
“Count me in.” Kie piped up. “Y/n, you coming? Three-on-three?”
I shrugged and pulled my lips into a thin line. “Why not?” I replied, slipping from under the blonde’s hold and facing him. “Duty calls.” He laughed before jokingly shooing me off. Averting my gaze to Mallory, she was chatting with Pope and I didn't know if I should interrupt but I didn’t want her to feel excluded. “Mallory-” She stopped talking, waiting for me to speak as she made contact with my eyes. “You wanna join? You can be our ref.” I taunted in a friendly manner, wiggling my eyebrows and shaking my shoulders.
She laughed out loud, throwing her head back slightly but shook her head ‘no’. “I think I’m gonna chill here until I have to go. Thanks, though.” I smiled and nodded shortly in her direction before waddling out of the water beside Kie.
We followed Sarah and the other group of girls to the volleyball net that was set in the middle of the sandy plane near the water’s edge, the trio turning to face ours. The girl on the far right broke the silence first — she had bone-straight blonde hair that was pulled back into a low-ponytail and she was significantly shorter than the two girls beside her.
“I’m Olivia. This-” She pointed to the girl beside her in the middle with similar features to her own — fair skin and blonde hair that was noticeably shorter, enough that it just barely reached her shoulders. “-is Amelia. My older sister. And that-” She craned her neck to look at the girl at the end of the line — jet black hair and olive-toned skin. “-is Mariana. My sister’s best friend and my biggest pain in the ass.”
Mariana rolled her eyes and waved at us. “That is so not true. That little shit is gonna miss me and her sister both when we’re off at college for the next four years.”
My friends and I smiled at their dynamic. “I’m Y/n.” I voiced, gesturing for the two girls on either side of me. “This Kiara and this is Sarah, my best friends.” We waved in return and got the game going.
They turned out to be really nice girls and Kie and Mariana seemed to be hitting it off and Sarah had even realized she had met Olivia and Amelia before when she went on a business trip with Ward one time.
The only down-side was that they kicked our asses — Olivia’s one hell of a volleyball player and Amelia’s the one who taught her all she knows. She’s going to college on a sports scholarship.
The sun had completely set at this point, just now realizing we’d been out practically all day. We were sweaty, damp and smelled like lake water but the day had been a success for the most part.
Sarah and I had bid farewell and separated from the other trio of girls, while Kiara and Mariana were chatting animatedly as Sarah and I stood off to the side and waited for her before a pair of hands came down on my shoulders rather aggressively and a loud “rah!” was heard from behind me.
Whipping around like a kid caught stealing candy, my eyebrows turned downwards and my lips pulled together. “JJ!” I screeched, shoving him back a few inches as he had a grin on his face while John B and Pope stood behind him laughing along, dripping water onto the sand, I assume Mallory had left. “You scared the shit out of me.” I grumbled.
Just then, Kie came bounding back to our group as Mariana returned to her own and bid farewell with a wave. Looking at Kie, I noticed a blush on her cheeks and a small piece of paper she was trying to conceal in her hand, but I’d ask about it later.
“Ready?” Sarah asked, everyone nodding and rushing back over to our spot where all of our belongings remained. We slipped on our shirts and shorts and made our way out of the spring and to the parking lot where the car was. Once inside, Sarah started the car and we were on our way.
WE’D GOTTEN BACK TO THE HOUSE SAFELY AND EVERYONE SPLIT UP TO GO SHOWER AND GO TO SLEEP. We’d tired out from the sun and running around all day.
I was about to head upstairs to hop in the shower and head off to bed. That was, until a hand on my forearm stopped me, craning my neck to find JJ staring up at me from his place at the bottom of the stairs.
“I’m gonna get in the hot tub for a minute. Care to join me?” He suggested. I was contemplating it. It sounded nice, in all honesty. We hadn’t touched the hot tub since we got here and having the powerful jets and hot water hit my body before a real shower and going to bed sounded appealing.
“Lead the way.”
JJ AND I HAD BEEN SITTING IN THE HOT TUB FOR ABOUT TEN MINUTES. Talking about anything and everything and just reveling in the warmth of the bubbling water. It’d gone silent a couple minutes ago, both of our heads thrown back in ecstasy.
“What’s up with you?”
Lifting my head to look straight ahead at him, I tilted my head to the side in curiosity. “What do you mean?”
“You just...seemed zoned out today. Like in the canoe, I asked if you were alright like twice and you said it was nothing but I don’t buy it.” He reminded. “Talk to me.” The boy urged.
Oh. That’s what he meant.
“It really is nothing, JJ.”
“I call bull. Why won’t you tell me what’s wrong?” Would he please just drop this? I’ve been holding it together for the most part all day.
“Because nothing is wrong. Why are you so adamant that there is?”
“Because I know you. There’s clearly something going on-” Just fucking drop it-
“Why do you care so much?” I snapped. JJ’s neck reeled back at my harsh tone, a deep look of concern etched on his features as he moved from his place against the side of the hot tub to stand right in front of me, his tall and hot frame towering over mine.
“I’m sorry.” He spoke softly, his hand trailing over my waist under the water, making his touch one-thousand times hotter. “I didn’t mean to push you. I’ve just been worried ‘s all.”
I sighed. “And I appreciate, JJ, I really do. But I really don’t want to talk. Not now, anyway.” I replied gently, too focused on his presence and how the distance between us, or lack of, was making my heart beat out of my chest.
He wants to know what’s wrong? This. This is what’s wrong. How he makes me feel, how he knows he makes me feel.
Silence fell over us as his hand caressed the curve of my hip and the other came to cradle the other side, pulling me up to stand in the small pool of water as well. We stood chest to chest, his eyes glued to mine as everything else faded from my peripheral and I could only see him.
My own hands came up to rest on his chest. Pull away, I thought to myself. But it was too late. It was over for me the second he licked his lips and leant down to crash his own against mine.
And I was making the same mistake I made almost a year ago. The same mistake I made every time this happened. I was kissing my best friend without a care in the world for who saw or what it meant but I knew the second we pulled away that this feeling — the euphoria in my heart and the butterflies in my stomach — it would all fade away. It would all vanish and so would he.
So, I savored this moment because I knew, somewhere deep down I knew, that this, wouldn’t be happening for a while. And it would be because of me. Because even as I stood here — JJ’s tongue down my throat, my hands forming tight fists in his hair and his grip on my waist tightening by the second, I could hear the snapping of my heart strings in my ears and my brain yelling at me to stop whatever this was. To stop hurting myself by letting him hurt me time and time again.
I was the first to pull away, out of breath and head dipping down to stare at the small waves of water between us. I knew it was coming when his hands fell from my waist and he was stepping back. I didn’t even look up as I heard the water splashing, signaling he had exited the tub.
I just stood there — in the middle of the hot tub with swollen lips, the muscle memory of his touch on my hips, and hot tears brimming in my eyes at the realization that he was going to pretend like this never happened…again.
“I’m, uh- I’m getting kind of tired. Think I’m gonna head inside.”
“JJ…” I spoke, voice shaking slightly as I still made no move to look at him. Hearing his feet pat against the concrete as he walked towards the sliding door.
“I’ll meet you inside-”
“When will you just admit it?” I snarled with a humorless laugh as I felt the first tear escape, trailing down my cheek. That was when I heard him stop in tracks, the atmosphere so silent that I could hear the drops of water that were falling from his body hit the ground.
So silent, I could hear the nervous gulp he took before speaking. “Admit what?”
That was when I found the courage to look up at him, my eyes red and one lone tear streak on my face. He was staring at me but his gaze didn’t reach my eyes and he was clutching his towel in his hand for dear life. “Don’t act like you don’t know. This whole cat-and-mouse game is getting really old, JJ, and it’s no fun when you don’t even know which role you’re playing.” I voiced my thoughts harshly and I stepped out of the hot tub, snatching my towel from the deck chair and moving past him to pull the sliding door open myself.
I didn’t look back as I made my way up the stairs, hearing him swear under his breath, to our shared room and into the bathroom to shower. By the time I got out, he was already in bed facing away from me. He probably showered elsewhere just to avoid brushing past me. I threw my clothes into the hamper and climbed in, facing away from him and letting my thoughts wander. Wander to how we got here in the first place…
“Heyy, gorgeous.” JJ slurred, beer in hand as he stumbled toward me. When his frame collided with mine, I could barely support him considering I was intoxicated myself. So I shimmied my shoulders to get him off of me.
We were standing by a tree, away from the core of the party, thrown by us at The Chateau, to celebrate our senior year. JJ and I leaned against the thick bark, both drunk and giggly.
“Why are you over here?”
“What do you mean?”
“Shouldn’t you be-” I took another sip from my red solo cup. “-with a touron or something.” I saw him shrug out of the corner of my eye, I think.
“I’d rather be over here with you.” He spoke dazingly, turning to view me from the side before I turned to look at him as well. “Y’know you look, like, really pretty tonight. ‘M not sure if that’s a weird thing to say.”
I blushed and tried to nudge him, missing by a few inches and merely brushing his elbow. “Shut up.” I muttered.
“No. ‘M being so serious.” He chuckled. “I always think you look pretty.” He was staring at me like he’d never seen me before, this starry look in his eyes before he was leaning forward and smushing his lips against mine — the taste of alcohol and fruit lingering around in the kiss.
I don’t remember everything from that night, but I remember the kiss. And the next morning, when we all woke up scattered around the Chateau, JJ and I had agreed that it was a drunken kiss, a one-time thing.
And that would’ve been fine had it been true. But it wasn’t. It happened again. And again when we were sober. And again. And again. And somewhere down the line I had ended up falling in love with my best friend. And when I went to talk about it, he’d find any and every way to avoid it.
We’d run out of excuses. And I was ready to face that fact — the fact that we weren’t just friends.
But he wasn’t.
He still isn’t. And I don’t know if he ever will be.

“Don’t ever do that again” Rudy pankow how dare you pull off such a soft im sorry face. JJ realised in that exact moment kiara really does care. Crying 😭 https://twitter.com/kiiebailey/status/1638691656005214214?s=46&t=_D7fZV0T1iOtwwqM0INzQA
this trend of editing the what do i got scene back to back with the me scene is gonna send me to an early grave anon IT'S INSANE.
In other news, I'm feeling extra feral about the don't ever do that scene today, so you're about to get another breakdown, because Rudy and Maddie really were on something else that day.
Like, this Maddie look is actually insane because it's relief but also disbelief and lowkey she doesn't really trust that he's really there? Like she was so sure he was done for, and almost bracing herself to find a body, and he's just walking about bragging about it.
Tumblr media
Like, it gets worse when she realizes that because not only is he alive when she thought he was dead only seconds ago, but he's actually making light of the situation. She thought she lost him, and she didn't, but he's bragging like it would've been fine either way, and it really wouldn't have been for her. Maddie knocked it out of the part here, like you can actually see how terrified she is, and the labored breathing is something else.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And the problem is JJ doesn't even realize at first, because when he turns to her he's still expecting the same mildly impressed and relieved reaction from her (and affection, which Lara already touched on).
Tumblr media
But she's literally about to cry from relief but also fear of what just happened, and that's when it starts to hit him.
Tumblr media
His face here is actually insane. This lighting doesn't help either, but Rudy's micro-expressions, and how he goes from indifference to realization to guilt.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And the tiny nod he does when she tells him don't do it again, which is not exactly a promise, but there's an understanding there now that wasn't there before. That hey actually if something happens to him, she's not going to be okay. Which creates a new problem for him, because this whole self-sabotaging JJ's doing in the first place is because he doesn't think he deserves her and he wants the best for her (which is his head is never him), so there's kind of a new conflict for him there because suddenly for Kie to be okay, he has to be okay too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I wish they didn't get interrupted so fast and that we could've had this moment be just a tiny bit longer, but the fact that when the cops call out to them, they both instantly reach out for eachother????? no it literally makes me want to do something so drastic.

No why did they have to say the scene of the boat was weird I don't think they think it at all it's just being back in the OBX and what her parents said to him made him do this JJ no just kiss her
Oh god you've done it now, you've got me writing an essay about the word "weird". That whole scene is insanely good, maybe the best written jiara scene in the season imo, and I'm still processing it because there is so many layers there. I think I could analyse the jiara scenes in episode 4 until the next season comes out and not run out of material to talk about.
I totally get why JJ used the word weird and don't take it negatively at all. JJ does not know how to talk about his feelings so this is very on brand for him. I talk about how layered this entire scene is and there is so much alone in him choosing to say "it was weird". On one side, you've got the fact that he has had a crush on Kie for years but never considered she would return his feelings so he's somehow trying to process that they almost crossed over into something he never though possible before. Kie is throwing herself into his arms, looking at him like he hung the moon and almost kissing him? That is absolutely weird (and if you look at the fishing scene when he catches her checking him out you can see on his face how he's trying to process what the fuck he just saw) But then on the second side of it, he has that conversation with Pope hanging over his head which tells him that pursuing anything with Kiara is a bad idea and a betrayal to their friendship. You've also got the fact that he's been ripped out of what he thought was an island paradise and dumped back in the Cut where the differences between he and Kie's circumstances becomes blinding. So I think part of him uses the word weird here to put some distance between them again. He throws that out there BUT (and this is the best part of that moment for me) Kie doesn't just let it stand. She counters with "not bad weird" (so BOLD of her) and of course he agrees and falls back into that moment with her because it's not bad it was just new and scary (and the attraction and chemistry is constantly pulling them together).
AND THEN TO MAKE THIS SCENE EVEN BETTER it parallels directly with Kie calling her relationship with Pope weird (derogatory) in S2. So her saying "not bad weird" in this scene acknowledges that everything is different with JJ. In that scene where she breaks things off with pope she says "I just wanted things to go back to the way that they were" but she never wants that with JJ. She keeps trying to have the conversation because she knows the connection they had is something more that a fleeting crush and that it is worth the risk. Only when he turns her down and act out does she actually back off.
Anywhooo....those are just some very casual normal thoughts about a 30 seconds of dialogue.

i love ur obx takes! and i like how being with jj was kie’s choice and no one pushed her to it.
A lot of users have spoken about this and that’s one of the many reasons why Kiara’s relationship with JJ is different from the rest. It was on Kiara’s terms in a way she hasn’t been allowed before with the other boys.
First with John B, he kissed her, not the other way around. We never really hear from Kiara that she likes John B, that’s just something JJ assumes and keeps pushing until John B listens to him and decides to make a move on her. But it was clear the moment it happened that neither of them wanted that. Kiara had to contemplate her relationship with John B because of that kiss, luckily it didn’t last long. I also don’t think Kiara ever liked JB romantically. She was overcompensating with her affection because she felt guilty she wasn’t there when Big John got missing, as Pope mentioned. I think she was overly affectionate with him because he needed that and that’s who Kiara is and the boys, especially JJ, misunderstood that increase of affection because that’s just how teenager boys are.
Then, she was the one who kissed Pope, but there were still a lot of instances in which she was given little input in their relationship. Pope confessed to her in arguably not the most ideal situation and then acted childish and entitled at being rejected by her. To me, that story line should’ve ended there at the confession because Kiara made it clear they don’t work and it simply was such a bad decision to even make them a thing. I would argue Kiara’s 180 switch with Pope on 110 had to do with the heavy situation of their best friend having to run away from a crime he didn’t commit and Pope loved her and it’s there, so why not give into that feeling? Then later the grief from thinking JB was death intensified the idea of a relationship in her mind and you can see her trying to convince herself she feels something for him other than platonic love. I don’t think Pope was in love with her either and I’m not trying to invalidate his feelings but I think he was projecting on her. She’s the first girl he is ever been close with and it’s natural to confuse platonic love to romantic love and this goes for all of them. To me, Kiara felt into the pixie girl dream trope maybe also to the others to some degree and that tends to happen with the girl in boy centered groups.
I’ve said this before but JJ is the only one that strike me as the one that had deeper feelings for Kiara, but I don’t think he thought it was ever happening. I don’t think he had an idolized version of her like Pope did mostly because I think both JJ and Kie are pretty similar and he understands her impulsiveness but also both feeling misunderstood and the pogues being the only thing they think of as real family. There’s a reason they’re the most ride or die for the group. 201 makes it a good point on showing that JJ and Kie were grieving pretty similar (speaking up for John B and vandalizing property) while Pope was the voice of reason.
Differently with the other boys, when it comes to JJ, Kiara is confident about her feelings. She’s not confused and she’s not trying to overcompensate anything. She knows and has not problem vocalizing her feelings, something she’s never done before. She could’ve easily follow JJ’s route on pretending it does not exist but she’s not letting him walk away from this. She’s standing her ground and letting him know she loves him not matter what. She’s not letting JJ control the situation. She will wait until he is ready but at least he is pretty aware of where she stands with him and won’t let him push her away. The thing about the conflict this season it’s that both are pretty much aware of what the other feels, so that’s not the problem, the problem is JJ allowing himself to be loved by her too, to know he is worthy of it.
This is why Kiara saying “not bad weird” about JJ makes sense in context because John B described his kiss with Kiara as weird and she agreed. Then later she described her first time with Pope as “weird” as she clearly had expectations that weren’t meet with him so her saying that almost kissing JJ is “not bad weird” automatically makes the distinction between him and the others. In conclusion, pursuing JJ was Kiara’s choice not something she felt she was made to dive into by being approached first but a situation that was mutual and ended up mostly being on her terms.

What are your thoughts on "I love you" confessions from Kiara? Do you think they are romantic or she's simply stating the fact that she always loved him?
i loved both love confessions from kie cause they are so jiara. i can't understand why people are actually mad that we got "i love you" so fast when the basis of jiara relationship is being best friends.
i consider the "i love you dude" as a statement that kie simply lives by. it's not like she had to do some soul searching and realise that she loves jj romantically, loving him is the most natural thing in the world for her. again, she said it to him cause he was acting like an ass trying to make her angry at him, trying to push her away. and that's why her "i love you dude" sounds offended.
Tumblr media
i love how madison described this moment in one of her interviews. it was like "i love, can't you see that i love you? you don't need to push me away, i'm right here, i'm not giving up". those feelings that kie had for jj just evolved into something more romantic, it's not like she suddenly stopped loving him as her best friend to love him romantically. she's telling him that she loves him without any doubts in her mind, it's nothing new for her that's why it sounded so simple, without any rainbows and butterflies.
the second time kiara says it is probably even better. cause here is the boy that she's in love with, her best friend, a person who she knows better than anyone in this world. a few hours earlier she wasn't sure when she's going to see her friends, if she's even going to see them at all. and now that boy literally went through so many obstacles to get to her, to save her. and the change of behaviour that she clearly sees in him - the way he was avoiding her before the anniversary party, how he pushed her away cause he had no time to talk about them, he needed to go and save big john. but now he came for her, he's not saving big john cause finally his focus is solely on her, on them. she finally sees that she's his priority [and after the whole season of jj running away it's a realisation for her] she once again expresses her feelings by telling him that she loves him.
and the most beautiful thing in that scene for me that it's clear that kiara doesn't expect jj to say it back, she's saying how she feels, she's not trying to make him feel the same. cause once again she knows that he loves her, it's once again nothing new for her cause kiara knows jj, they're best friends.
so after he says it back you can see a small wave of shock on her face when she looks him in the eyes. it's like she's not sure it's real.
Tumblr media
and once again i want to add that I’ll forever praise rudy and madison for their performances. they literally made the little things so special, i can’t even put into words how much i loved what they did there. anyway, yeah, both love confessions were amazing. if some people are not satisfied, they need to check the material for best friends to lovers trope cause jiara is best friends to lovers supremacy. again, kie is not meeting this new person who she knows nothing about. she knows her best friend inside and out, she loves him and accepts him. she doesn’t need to think much before opening her heart to jj cause she’s already done it million times. it’s so many words, sorry, but your question made me rewatch those scenes, so i’m a bit emotional after watching them, you know

Can you maybe write something with swiftie!reader?
I thought this sounded so cute and since I saw a couple tiktok edits of JJ to this song, it’s the one I ended up referencing 🥰
Style (JJ Maybank x Reader)
Tumblr media
John B realized his mistake the moment he handed you the aux cord, but it was too late. You plugged your phone in and pulled your go-to playlist up.
You were in the passenger seat so it had been something he’d done without thought, but as Taylor Swift’s voice came over the speakers, Kiara leaned between the seats.
“See, now why would you do that?” she questioned John B
“Hey! Her songs are really good,” you argued, looking back at Kiara.
“They are, but you play this one way too much.”
You rolled your eyes at Kie and opened your mouth to speak, but JJ crammed his way to the middle to be able to lean over your seat. The action made you smile, especially when he backed you up.
“Let her play what she wants,” JJ jumped in. “Besides, I like this one. “Style”, right?”
“10 points to JJ!” you cheered overdramatically, mostly just to watch Kie roll her eyes.
You noticed the sly grin appear on JJ’s face right before he asked, “Do I get a prize?”
That look he got when he was only focused on you crossed his face. You loved it.
You grabbed his chin lightly in one hand and pulled him in close enough for you to be able to press a kiss to his lips.
“You guys are gross,” Kie grumbled, moving to sit back in her spot.
“Please don’t make out in front of us,” Pope requested a little uncomfortably, finally making himself known.
“Jeez, Pope,” JJ drawled when the two of you parted. “It was just a kiss, not making out. When we do make out, you’ll know.”
Pope cringed at the implication while you jokingly swatted at your boyfriend.
While you had control of the music, you only played Taylor Swift. You let a variety play out, but went back to “Style” more than once.
At one point when you played it a second time, even though he was sitting behind you, you realized JJ was humming the tune and occasionally muttered out some of the lyrics to himself.
It brought you joy, and that was partially why you ended up playing it yet another time. You knew all the complaints were non-serious, so you didn’t see a problem. Besides, you put up with their music tastes all the time, they could handle it.
Later, when it was just the two of you lounging out in the hammock while the others resided inside the Chateau, JJ brought it up.
He was laying on his back with his arm wrapped around you. You laid mostly on your side next to him, your head on his shoulder.
“Why do you like that song so much?” he wondered, probably realizing he hadn’t asked before.
You knew exactly which one he was talking about. You tilted your head up and found him looking down at you. You smiled to yourself, knowing exactly why.
“Parts of it make me think of you,” you admitted. JJ didn’t say anything, waiting for you to explain. ““James Dean daydream”?” you recited, gauging his reaction. ““Long hair slicked back, white T-shirt”?”
As your luck would have it, to further prove your point, JJ was wearing his favorite white T-shirt. You pinched the fabric between your fingers and that caused him to look down at himself.
JJ’s brows pinched together. “My hair’s not that long.”
You chuckled at how he analyzed the lyrics.
“Long enough,” you replied lightly, shrugging your shoulders in spite of the angle. “And it’s not the whole song, because our relationship isn’t in danger like that—it’s not, right?”
You weren’t asking him genuinely, you had a joking tone that he could easily identify.
“Absolutely not,” JJ still answered with certainty. “You and I are perfect.”
“I second that,” you agreed, snuggling a little closer to him. “But anyway, a few weeks ago I heard it after we hung out and that part…” you trailed off, watching him watch you.
You loved the interest JJ showed as you spoke, even over something as small as a song. It made you feel more listened to and cared about than you ever had before.
“I don’t know, it just made me think of you,” you concluded, not having a more complicated reason like he was expecting.
“It is a pretty good song, and if that means I’m on your mind, then I approve,” JJ beamed.
JJ cupped your face in his hand and leaned down to press his lips to yours. You grinned against his lips before letting your eyes slide shut and kissing him back.
JJ rolled you beneath him, his lips moving against yours with dominance.
You had an afterthought about before in the van when Pope accused the two of you of making out. You hadn’t been before, but you were now. You really hoped this one wouldn’t be interrupted.
The next time you all were in the van, JJ rode passenger since you all took turns for the most part. When John B handed him the aux cord, a smile broke out across your face the same time Kiara rolled her eyes dramatically and Pope sighed when his chosen song came on.
“Seriously, dude? You too?” John B asked, more amused at his friend playing Taylor Swift than annoyed.
When “Style” got to the chorus, JJ looked over the seat. He gave you a smile in return before sitting back down properly.
“What?” he questioned with a shrug, facing John B. “I like this one.”

Day Six: Rewrite Of A Favorite Scene From The Beautiful Mistakes Series.
summary: for day six I have decided to rewrite my version of the hot tub scene. I always felt like I could’ve done more with it.
Tumblr media
Breakups aren’t easy.. especially when it wasn’t even planned.
Ruby had regretted those words since she watched JJ leave Barry’s house, what else was she supposed to do? She was terrified, and deep down she was hoping those words would snap him back into reality.
but they didn’t.. JJ just gave her that god awful blank stare, the one he does when he’s disconnected, the one where he’s hiding something deep down.
So she let him go.. all these years she’d been waiting for him and now she’s lost him. Ruby felt nothing but guilt, how could she just let him walk away?
She was on crutches, she’d fallen down the well in the Craine house because of Kiara and broken her leg.
So now here she was, hobbling through the kitchen in the chateau and looking for something to eat, this was a lot harder than she originally thought it’d be.
Ruby looked up, squinting in confusion as several fairy and neon lights turned on in the backyard, she was the only one here and she definitely didn’t remember all those lights being there.
So she hobbled her way outside, sighing as she saw JJ sitting in a brand new hot tub, she didn’t even want to ask what he’d gotten himself into now.
“ Ruby! Baby c’mere!” JJ said cheerfully but Ruby stayed a few feet back, “ JJ c’mon.. why did you do this..?” She asked, tapping her nails on her crutches.
“ money blew a hole right in my pocket” he said with a shrug, “ you could’ve at least used it for your restitution..” she said quietly, she didn’t want him to end up in jail for something he didn’t even do.
“ I’ll figure it out alright? Now get in the cats ass” he said and she shook her head, “ J you know I can’t just condone this! Just talk to me!” She yelled, she felt like she was begging him at this point.
All their lives he’d always been able to tell her what was going on, but now he was pushing her away and she didn’t understand why.
“ just tell me! Why! Why would you do all this? You’re gonna end up in jail! You could’ve paid it off!” She yelled but froze, all other words getting caught in her throat the moment he stood up.
Her stomach churned at the sight of the bruises and she swallowed hard- god she felt guilty, she should’ve seen that something wasn’t right with him.
“ JJ i- I’m sorry..” Ruby’s voice was barely a whisper, tears filling her eyes as she looked him over, “ I got this for us okay..? I’m a shitty boyfriend and I’m sorry.. I’m sorry that I’m not good enough. But look! Look at it I mean it’s nice right?” JJ choked out through sobs.
Her crutches clattered to the ground as she forced herself into the hot tub, taking him into her arms and holding him as close as possible.
Tears streamed down her face as he sobbed and clung to her, it was as if she was the air he needed to breathe.
“ I couldn’t.. I couldn’t take it anymore Rue.. I was gonna kill him..” he sobbed in a terrified whisper, hugging her body closer.
“ shh.. shh it’s okay J.. you didn’t do anything wrong..” she said quietly, rubbing the back of his head to soothe him.
“ please take me back..” he begged and looked up at her, she gently wiped away his tears, “you never lost me..” she promised, caressing his cheek.
She pulled him into a gentle kiss, one full of love and passion, she wished her kisses could take all of his pain away, even just for a moment.
But as she held him close that cold July night she knew she truly loved him..
She knew they would get through this. Together.

My works on AO3 are quickly multiplying with more to come, so I thought I would keep a list of everything here. Feel free to check them out and comments are always appreciated!
------
keep my hand in yours (3/3)
Summary: 6 times JJ struggled with affection and 1 time he didn't.
Word Count: 28,222
She slips her hand into his before leaning her head back against the hard seat as well. She positions their joined hands on her thigh, lacing their fingers together, and he immediately stills.
His pulse jumps as his eyes zero in on their linked hands. It’s far from the first time they’ve held hands, and considering they just kissed for the first time like a day ago, it’s not even the most romantic thing they’ve done recently.
But the way she simply sat down next to him and held his hand, pulling it into her lap like it’s something they do every day, sends his mind spinning.
And it’s not that he doesn’t want to hold her hand, because he absolutely does. He craves her attention more than he probably should, and he never wants to lose the warm feeling in his chest, but he just… doesn’t know if he deserves it.
------
fractured moonlight on the sea (1/1)
Summary: What if Kiara was the one who got hit with the machete?
Word Count: 13,995
It feels like things are happening in slow motion – her hair fluttering in the breeze, the blinding glint of sunlight catching on steel as the machete approaches Kiara, a resounding thwack he knows he’ll hear echo in his nightmares. Her lips part in shock as she stumbles backwards from the force of the blow, her boots skittering across the rough floor of the ship while he fights to scramble to his feet, his own head cloudy…
Everything speeds up after that. It’s blurry – flashes of light, snatches of sounds that he can’t quite pin down. Honeyed curls floating through the air. The sound of a fist connecting with flesh, a strangled “Kie” in a voice he barely recognizes as his own.
KieKieKieKieKie
He manages to struggle to his feet, powered by pure rage. He takes down the man with one solid punch to the face that carries all his fury and fear, before rushing to the edge of the ship and finding his worst nightmare below.

the light guiding you home (1/1)
Summary: A week after returning home from South America, Kiara's struggling, and JJ knows exactly how to help.
Word Count: 10,622
“Where would we even go?” she asks eventually, and she watches the concern in his eyes fade into the background.
JJ just quirks an eyebrow and pokes her gently in the side. “It’s a surprise.”
“I hate surprises, JJ,” she groans, the familiar banter helping to banish her fear too. “Just tell me.”
“I can’t tell you. It would ruin the surprise.”
“But I–”
“Hate surprises,” he finishes for her. “Yeah, yeah. You’ll like this one, I promise.”
He smiles at her fondly, and even though she doesn’t want to go anywhere, she is a tiny bit curious about what he’s planned. But before the thought is even fully formed, she’s remembering cold hands tightly gripping her arms, her mom apologizing as Kiara begged and pleaded with her to stop, to let her go, wriggling to escape their ironclad grasp.
No, it’s safer to stay here, she thinks.
------
tangled in the ties that bind (1/1)
Summary: A few missing moments from 3x05 and 3x06 as Kiara attempts to deal with the fallout of everything that happened.
Word Count: 9,141
As the moment stretched on, she felt something else bubble up inside of her the longer they silently stood there. She fought to breathe properly, to calm her racing heart, to push back the tears threatening to fall. Her relief quieted into something deeper, more solid and heavy, as he shifted his weight back and forth, having the good sense to look a bit embarrassed the longer she glared at him.
They’d already gone through this once, in the lifeboat, his face pale and unresponsive as she screamed at him to wake up, panic clogging her throat. She couldn’t keep doing it.
“Don’t… don’t you ever do that again,” she said lowly, in a voice she barely recognized, amazed that it only wobbled slightly.
She wanted to say more, to make sure he knew how afraid she was, the stabbing pain in her chest that wouldn’t go away even though he was right there in front of her. How much she needed him, relied on him, always looked to him, but she couldn’t seem to find the words.
------
you're all i need (1/1)
Summary: JJ and Kiara's first night back in the OBX after returning from South America.
Word Count: 7,777
So while he doesn't doubt that they love each other, he does worry, because being back home brings up a whole other host of issues. And the last time they came back, those differences in their lives pushed them apart. The awareness of how different they were, their families, their lives, everything.
He doesn’t want to let that happen again, but a part of him deep down knows that he can't control it. There’s so many deep seated issues and ideas and thoughts buried in his psyche that a simple I love you – no matter how very not simple it felt at the time – isn’t going to magically solve all those other things.
But when he glances over at Kie as they step off the plane together, feels her fingers laced tightly with his, her comforting smile as though she knows exactly where his mind has gone, well.
Like she said.
Whatever happens, they’re gonna handle it together.
------
what we're fighting for (3/3)
Summary: 3 times JJ realized that he might possibly get the one thing he wants most.
Word Count: 9,766
Luke’s always found a way to ruin every good thing JJ’s ever had.
And Kie’s the best thing.
But the little comments were consistent. And he doesn’t wanna think that anything Luke told him has stuck with him, but he knows that's not possible. He’s absorbed years of little comments and jabs, pieces of questionable wisdom that just became part of his everyday life. Things the Pogues would roll their eyes or laugh at because they didn’t really understand where they came from.
But this – Luke’s certainty that Kiara would eventually see JJ for the trash he was and leave? That idea burrowed its way into his very being, no matter how defiantly he proclaimed that it would never happen.
------
fall into me (1/1)
Summary: Kiara's world is crumbling but JJ's there by her side.
Word Count: 9,595
His fingers brush against her wrist, bringing her out of her thoughts. “Kie, you’re a Pogue,” he says firmly, his thumb tapping on her newest bracelet. “It doesn’t matter what your parents think. What shit they tell you. There’s nothing that’s ever gonna change that. I promise.”
She swallows thickly. It feels like more, like there’s an underlying meaning to his words. She grabs onto them, holds them tightly against her heart, reminded of who she is – and who she is to JJ.
Who he is to her, too.
------
darkest before dawn (1/1)
Summary: a vaguely season 3 adjacent fic in which JJ goes missing and Kiara loses her shit.
Word Count: 11,476
There should be four of them returning.
And there’s only three.
Three exhausted, bedraggled Pogues stand in front of her, all watching her cautiously, with varying degrees of worry. She feels like her heart might explode right out of her chest as it settles over her just who’s missing. The one face that she needs to see, the arms she wants wrapped around her, the person whose presence she craves like some kind of drug.
Her eyes run across them one more time before darting to the surrounding area – because maybe he just fell behind? But there’s no messy blond head in the distance and no playful smirk appears, teasing her for worrying so much. Instead everyone seems frozen as the severity of the situation settles over them, as though they’re waiting for the final shoe to drop.
And so, with her heart her throat, she opens her mouth, asking the question that they’re all waiting for, her voice startlingly strong.
“Where’s JJ?”
------
little things we tell ourselves (1/1)
Summary: a spec fic based on the season 3 still that sent us all into a jiara induced haze.
Word Count: 6,149
“Hi.”
The wrench in his hand goes skittering sideways at the sound of her quiet voice behind him, thudding into the dirt. When he turns and finds her standing at the edge of the driveway, his heart can’t help that familiar fluttering as he watches her draw closer – long tanned legs, a John B-esque shirt buttoned over some stupidly small thing that barely classifies as a top. Relief sings through his veins as he stares at her, all in one glorious piece.
He's paralyzed, remembering the way she’d run to him on the dock and thrown herself into his arms. The way he’d refused to let her out of his sight until he was forced to, their hands laced tightly together until her parents had led her away. He tries and fails to force his racing heart to calm down.
“Sup,” he manages, his greedy eyes taking her in.
-----
leave the lights up 'til january (2/?)
Summary: A jiara holiday fic collab with @jojameswinter!
It comes to him all at once, crystal clear through that jumbled mess in his mind. Something he can do for her, what he’d wanted to for a while, not knowing how. But then she’d given him a piece of her, handed him that present all messy and imperfect and he thought, he could do it too–
Be brave.
Because she thought of him on Christmas – thought of him even at all. And he needs to show her he’s thought about her too.
“You up for another ride?”
Or, JJ and Kiara create their own holiday traditions.
------
i'll look after you (6/6)
Summary: When JJ's world shifts drastically, Kiara's by his side like always. This time though, it's a little bit different.
Jiara Bingo prompt - JJ's house
Word Count: 8,575
She steps closer, her chin tipping up. “JJ,” she says. “I’m staying here, y’know. Like for good.”
It still amazes him sometimes how this girl is able to read him like a fucking book. The way she seems to sense what he’s trying to say when he can’t quite find the words.
He blinks, not daring to hope. “What about seeing the world, and–”
“I can see the world and still be here,” she replies, her eyes darting away for a moment. “I just… I was away at school for so long and nothing felt right until I came back here.”
Here .
A tiny part of his stupid heart desperately wishes that she means here with him, but he knows she doesn’t. It’s the Banks, it’s her family being here, her friends, the salty ocean air, everything familiar…
“Yeah, Kildare is really somethin’,” he replies lowly, looking anywhere but at her, his shoulders curving inwards. “Paradise on earth, right?”
------
can this be a real thing, can it? (1/1)
Summary: A vaguely Halloween themed one-shot featuring JJ and Kiara getting their shit together, a keg stand, and lots of sexual tension.
Jiara Bingo prompt - "If you want me to come, I'll come."
Word Count: 7,311
“Well. That’s not how I saw that going,” JJ says, his tone light but a faint thread of annoyance lingering under the words.
She laughs. “Yeah. Me either. I thought…” She lets the words trail off, because she’d thought that JJ was about to kiss her there in the backyard at a stupid Halloween party. Part of her is disappointed, but a tiny part of her is secretly glad, because she doesn’t know if she wanted their first kiss to happen in such a public place, for everyone to see.
She wonders when she started thinking of their first kiss as something inevitable.
------
find my way back (1/1)
Summary: JJ and Kiara reunite after she's separated from the group. A oneshot based on the S3 sneak peek.
Word Count: 3,224
She crashes into him with a force he’ll feel for the rest of his life, her body colliding with his. She’s warm and solid and whole and he’s never fucking letting her go, not ever. His arms close around her tightly, one around her lower back and the other reaching to cup to her shoulder. She throws her arms around his shoulders and buries her face in his neck. He can feel her shaking under his hands, and she’s talking, whispering something that he can’t quite make out, her breath hot against his skin. It doesn’t even fucking matter because all his brain can seem to comprehend is KiaraKiaraKiara.
------
can't get you off my mind (1/1)
Summary: Kiara and JJ spend their nights after they return from the island on the phone, talking about everything and nothing, until Kiara lets something slip that changes everything.
Jiara bingo prompt - Early Morning
Word Count: 11, 491
Fuck it, she thinks, picking up the phone and pushing the call button before she can talk herself out of it again. It’s JJ. He won't mind. She just needs to hear his voice and then maybe she’ll be able to get some fucking sleep, stop obsessing over the trauma in her life, and move on from it instead.
He answers on the second ring, his voice hoarse but sounding surprisingly alert for the middle of the night. “Kie?”
“Hey,” she whispers, as the sound of his voice sends a pleasurable rush through her body. “Did I wake you?”
------
no turning back (1/1)
Summary: What if Kiara and Pope came back early during 2x04 instead of staying out all night, and ran into some unwelcome guests?
Featuring protective JJ, badass Kiara, and the hammock.
Word Count: 6,958
JJ’s heart feels like it fucking stops when he sees Kiara and Pope walk into the backyard together.
No. They can’t be here.
If he was annoyed when they’d left together, obviously heading off to mack or whatever, he’d pushed those feelings deep deep down in his chest. Because he obviously didn’t have a chance with Kie, but Pope - Pope was someone he could see being with her. And then when Rafe had shown up and they’d scrambled up into the trees in the backyard, he’d been fucking grateful that they were wherever the hell they were and not here with them, in yet another dangerous situation.
But here they are and the panic already building in his chest reaches an immediate fever pitch.
No. This cannot be fucking happening. Why are they here? How are they here?
No no no.
------
maybe it's you (1/1)
Summary: After graduating from college and moving to Charleston for a new job, Kiara realizes she's lonely and decides to adopt a rescue dog. Along the way she meets JJ, who immediately welcomes her into his world.

He’s got messy blonde hair that curls out from under a faded red ball cap. Bright blue eyes that currently eye her with interest, as though she’s done something particularly endearing. He’s dressed in a navy t-shirt with the rescue logo printed on the chest and it fits him especially well. She’s always been a sucker for a well fitted t-shirt, and the way the sleeves sit snugly on his well defined biceps, well…
She’s a fan.
“So, can I help you?” he eventually asks, forcing her to stop checking him out like a sex depraved fiend and actually remember why she’s here in the first place.
“Oh, uh yes! I’m looking to adopt a dog.”

the future is bright (1/1)
Summary: For months, Kiara has been dragging JJ to dinners to charm her potential new boss as her fake boyfriend. This one turns out a bit differently than the rest.
Future fic.
Word Count: 6,681
“Hey,” he says, his face so close to hers that she can make out every individual eyelash around his unfairly blue eyes. His voice is soft, almost breathy, and it does weird things to her insides.
“Hi,” she breathes back and she wants to wince when her words come out in a ridiculously high pitched whisper, but JJ just smiles down at her. His hands are warm against her hips, fingers holding on tight to the smooth fabric of the dress she chose for this holiday party. She lets her fingers play with the hair at the nape of his neck, just this one time, the strands silky against her skin.
She gets kind of lost in his gaze, in the way he looks at her like she’s something precious to him. Which is ridiculous, she knows. This doesn’t mean anything to him. She’s just his friend. It’s all pretty words and fake gestures.

stuck in a moment (1/1)
Summary: What happened after Pope and Kie argued on the HMS Pogue in 1x08.
Word Count: 2,751
“He wasn’t wrong though,” Kiara spits out, her voice hoarse. “That’s the worst part. I did leave. I did abandon you. I did all of that.”
JJ doesn’t say anything right away. He and Kie had aired their shit ages ago. He’s not one to keep his feelings hidden and she’s not one to let things slide. They’re both fucking stubborn and so within days of Kiara coming back they’d had a shouting match in the driveway of the Chateau followed by a day of silence, and then they’d basically hugged it out and things were cool now. Maybe even better than they were before, because JJ feels like Kiara coming back has made things in his life much brighter. Like there was a Kiara shaped hole the whole time she was gone that’s now filled.

where do we go from here? (1/1)
Summary: JJ and Kiara finally have a talk about their conversation on the freighter and their future.
Post S2.
Word Count: 3,998
It takes a while before they talk about it again.
A while before she can think about their time on the freighter and on the island without it sending her into a panic attack. The memory of JJ’s dead weight pulling her under the water. The inky blackness and nothingness. The way she’d just accepted that she wasn’t going to let him go because she couldn’t quite picture her life without his easy grins and stupid jokes and incessant chatter. The way he’d worked his way into her heart and set up permanent residence there.

The Foster-Part Three
Tumblr media
TW: hints at smut. Language. Angsty situations.
SUMMARY: Situations arise that being certain relationships to light, as well as desires and tensions….
WORD COUNT: 1700
*ORIGINAL CONCEPT*
The Foster Part 3
She was flawless in every way you picked yourself apart and it made your eyes narrow at her. It was the only action in which allowed Kiara to find something to like about you, a mutual loathing for the effortless beauty that was Sarah Cameron. Leaving a string of insecure girls and aroused men in her wake without the means or care of doing either. At least to everyone but John B, it seemed.
"Haven't you done enough?" Kiara shot as she stood before John B, your eyes widened as JJ leaned over to you.
"Sarah got our golden boy fired after he borrowed some scuba gear..."
"Stole, you mean-"
"Doesn't matter. Just goes on to prove once again why you can't trust Kooks..."
But if you happened to learn the details of their mutual disgust for her presence, nobody validated this more than Kiara.
"Don't you have a boyfriend to irritate? Some friends to stab in the back?"
"This isn't about you Kiara." She tried to look back towards John B, resuming a conversation that didn't have a chance to begin. Her siren eyes flashing to you for only a moment before you looked at John B.
"You shouldn't even be here." The girls continued to throw cruel remakes at one another before you recognized the fire behind Kiara's eyes. The one that would come just seconds before she would lunge, something you believed you knew well as you'd done the same. Many times.
"It isn't worth it..." You explained before Sarah scoffed.
"And who the hell are you supposed to be?"
"I don't know what's going on, but-"
"Stay out of this-"The way Sarah projected her hand to your face was enough to alter any potential kindness into an upset rivaling even Kiara's.
"I think you're on the wrong side of the island, Barbie. Maybe you need to get back to whatever ken doll you've managed to victimize long enough to realize you're pretty dense otherwise-" You tapped her temple as she hit your hand away.
"You think because you're new that your opinion matters. Hate to break it to you, sweetheart. You don't. You and whatever sob story you rode in on. Piece of advice, you might want to try putting a little effort in because whatever tragedy is responsible for the bags under your eyes will only make people feel bad for so long. Won't be enough for anyone to stay-" The very thing you tried to keep from happening to Kiara had now been what forced John B to wrap his arms around your waist to keep you from attacking Sarah.
But from the second he pulled you away, you were able to feel every pull of each muscle as he took you into safe parameters. For Sarah's sake. When you were finally released, you repressed a pout as you found an odd comfort in his grasp.
"Come on, Rocky..." He teased while taking you into his room within The Chateau.
"If all Kooks are like that, I can see why you don't get along."
"Usually Sarah's actually manageable...Until recently, anyway."
"Yeah JJ told me about the scuba gear. Why did you take it?"
"You wouldn't believe me if I told you..." He confessed before looking over his shoulder. "And they'd kill me if I did "
"Well I have nothing but time and need something to calm myself down before I find out just how many hair extensions she has."
"Damn, scrapper...okay...But just keep an open mind." And with this, John B began to tell you every detail that had transpired since before he was sent away into the system. Details of treasure and gold. A sunken Grady White and a dead body. An old compass and its connection to a clue that brought him unintentionally to now. But where he expected you to become even more inquisitive or even confused, you just laughed.
"Fine then, don't tell me."
"I'm serious. My dad spent his entire life looking into it. Taking our rent money and just disappearing-" He was suddenly on his feet.
"Come here..." He took you across the hall and into his dad's office. Walls littered with research of an old maritime vessel you pegged as "The Royal Merchant." Your fingers came to the collection of books, mostly too dusty to appreciate a lack of care for, until looking back at him.
"He left this..." A tape recorder placed what had been a final message along with a map. The contents sending your mouth wide.
"Shit..."
"And I was on my way to finding out more before being hijacked by the state-"
"What exactly are you after?"
"400 million..." Pope spoke in the doorway.
"Don't get me wrong, I didn't ignore the fact you had my back with Sarah, but it doesn't mean I forgot you stole my clothes." Kie added.
"Actually, I gave them to her..." John B defended, his eyes reaching across the space to you rather slow climb as you adored the attention and defense for a moment.
"Well still...I guess you're one of us now..."
"You should have seen the look on her face. I don't think I've ever seen a princess that pissed..." JJ finally entered.
"She knows..." Pope explained, slightly disappointed.
"Good because in case y'all haven't noticed, we aren't the best at keeping a low profile..."
"Speaking of that..." John B suddenly alerted you all of the new and unwanted arrival.
"JJ..." Kiara warned.
"Swear to God wasn't me...I don't think..."
"J!"
John B collected your hand within his own.
"I'm trusting you. Please don't make me regret it." He spoke into your ear, squeezing your hand just enough to leave an impression of the warmth he could allow. His body leaning down to you as if to tell you it would be alright.
"If they see you, they'll take you both back!" Kiara reminded as everyone looked to one another before you and John B were ultimately left waiting for the other to offer some grand masterplan.
"Closet. I'll take care of them..." Kiara spoke somewhat reluctantly before pushing you to the direction of his room. Before you could object, the bedroom door came closed.
"If you felt better about it, I could probably squeeze under the bed-" You would allow him even a second before taking him within the closet, the sound of steps approaching having meant you escaped in the nick of time once again.
"Maybe if I had you around the first time, I never would have been caught..." He spoke in a low whisper. .
"But then you never would have been blackmailed." You reminded, reading the tension of his torso as it was forced against you. The heavy exhales forced from shirt inhales making you well aware of just how close he was within the darkness.
"You can trust me, John B." He scoffed.
"Sarah said the same..."
"I'm not her..." You could feel his smile.
"You definitely aren't..." The sudden sensation of his fingers against your knuckles pulled your own breath to quiet. Even though your heart hammered within your chest, you couldn't help but wonder if it was with intent. Because of this, you remained still. Growing more desperate by the second.
"I'm glad you did."
"What?"
"Blackmailed me. It wouldn't be nearly this much fun without you. Or entertaining..." You smirked to yourself.
"Or..." He continued, his touch having now rested on your elbow as it made that stealthy climb.
"Or?" Your voice was weak, truly consumed by the moment and the closing proximity that continued from adrenaline and apparent fate set you a part of.
"Okay all-" JJ tore the doors open, revealing just how close you and John B had been. An unnecessary closeness that existed from your need to be close to one another.
"Uh..."
"It's late." Kiara interrupted Pope's inability to formulate a sentence of any kind.
"Yeah..." John B clenched his jaw in disappointment.
Within a handful of minutes, Kiara returned home after following Pope to his father's borrowed truck to wish a good night, leaving JJ asleep on the couch, and you unsure of where you'd rest for the night. But one thing was for certain, you needed to wash the day off. Between running the night before and the near scuffle an hour prior, you were anxious for that cleansing feeling.
"I don't think Kie left anything else, but you can borrow a shirt of mine..."
"You sure?" He nodded.
"Least I can do for how you defended us..."
You nodded, slipping across the hall before starting the water. Testing the stream below, you turned to find John B's reflection in the mirror. His eyes trained on you in a way of regret for having been interrupted prior. Your lips pulled to a widening grin before you teased your fingers along the line of your shirt. But just before he would learn of your proclivity of white lace, you closed the door.
The shower was uneventful yet sultry in theory. You imagined John B making his way into the steamed room, collecting the curtain in a forced pull, and joining you to enact the visions that contradicted your attempt to get clean. Yet the events of the night brought you to smirk at yourself in comparison. You hardly knew him. Even if he made your thighs press whenever he was close and offered some sense of safety you could explain. He was really no more than a stranger.
With heartbreak eyes. Tempting lips. Muscles that could pull you effortlessly away from gravity. It was enough to bring a blush to his cheeks and your hand in a teasing descent before you remembered how close he had been. How his chest fell against yours. How his breath rested at your lips…
Because of this, you retracted any attempt to silence that need between your legs and finally exited from the shower. But once doing so, you became nervous on what you'd say when seeing him again after your near peep show seconds before shutting the door. After a moment's hesitation, you decided it was better to face the music, but found him looking at you instead.
Without a word, just as your lips parted to speak, he moved into you. His hands at your hips as he walked you back into the sink. A final look for consent offered to you before he then surprised you with a soft kiss. But it was that instant collision that offered only a glimpse of the passion he was capable of.
Passion you were soon to learn from this unexpected turn of events.
