Arty Art Things ✨
Hellooo!
I've decided to post some of the arty things I've done either recently or in the last few years, well the pieces I'm somewhat proud of at least. All my posts tend to be a lot more wordy than they need to be but hey it's what I do here!
Conchúr White
Anyone one who's been on this blog for a bit will have probably have seen me talk about this lovely Irish fella. The pencil drawing is actually a year old as of yesterday, I only know that because screenshots of me flipping out about Conchúr following me on twitter popped up in my memories yesterday. I think I'd sent it to him at about 3 in the morning (I was not in a good head space at that point in time), so probably not what he was expecting to see when he opened his phone in the morning aha
The biro version is much more recent: I got bored while sat at my desk and doing research about university courses, saw a biro, saw my old drawing of Conchúr, had an idea. I revisited my GCSE art techniques and here we are. Again, I put this up on Twitter and now (at the the time I'm writing this) when you google "Conchúr White" it's the third top image of him which is a bit mad really. I think I spent all of about 20 minutes on Conchúr but another 45 minutes on the words behind him. The words are the names of the songs on his EP 'Bikini Crops', he doesn't just really love the idea of Channing Tatum driving him around at night in a daisy print bikini... Well maybe he does but what he does in his spare time is none of my business...

TechDif
So I mentioned that the pencil drawing of Conchúr came from a rough patch in my mental health and this one is no different! In fact this one came from an even worse circumstance so we love to see it. I had a bad, bad time in July and this started as a way of distracting myself from what was going on in my head. Without it, I can't honestly say I'd still be here so even if the final product of this had been a terrible mess I would still love it for keeping me alive. However, it did not turn out to be a terrible mess!
Now that the origin of this is out the way, where do I start with TechDif? Unlike Conchúr, I haven't really talked about them on here (unless you count one brief post about Citation Needed) before so I guess I'll do it here. The Technical Difficulties are a wonderful group of 4 British fellas who have had their fair share of fun online and even before. They did a radio show at university together, which went on to become their Reverse Trivia Podcast, later moving on to a panel show called 'Citation Needed': and a game called 'Two of These People Are Lying'. All of which I would thoroughly reccomend, they're one of my go to things when I'm having a rough time. All 4 of them are excellent! Tom Scott (red top, blue jeans on the picture) has his own YouTube channel which does content aside from TechDif. If you're quite nerdy and like science, linguistics, computers, or any number of other things you may enjoy Tom's channel. He is probably best described as "The Moderator" of the group, much like a tired teacher he tries desperately to keep everyone on track with what they're meant to be doing, but usually it does not end well for him. Then we have Matt Gray (space top, holding an ice cream) who also has a channel away from TechDif stuff, he does techy electronic things and has a series called 'Will it Soft Serve?' where he puts all kinds of strange things through a soft serve machine. Matt brings a very specific energy to TechDif and I can't fully describe what that vibe is but I love it. Matt and Tom also share a YouTube channel where TOTPAL is posted and they had a series called 'The Park Bench'. Moving on to everybody's favourite Gary Brannan: Gary Brannan (SATIRE hoodie, glasses) and can I just say, what a fella he is! He's just excellent! He is the one that will argue and rip into Tom the most (not in a malicious way) and hilarity ensues. There are some episodes where he is absolutely on it, getting all the points and others where he very clearly has no idea and that's where some of his funniest quotes come from. Given how badly I was doing at the time I made this, his response to it on Twitter was so so lovely. I specifically remember one tweet where he said I'd made him happy and although it was probably a flippant comment, it just made feel alright for a bit. Yeah I might be feeling awful right now, but I've made someone else happy so that's a nice feeling. Then last but certainly not least, we have Chris Joel (buffalo check shirt, beard)! I would be lying if I said he isn’t my favourite... His sense of humor is the one I vibe with most, he can get rather dramatic in parts and can chat bollocks like a champion. He has absolutely no online presence away from TechDif and, like Rens from Temples, I fully believe he’s a cryptid and lives off in a tree somewhere.
The picture took me about 4 days to complete, well 4 nights because I did most of it between the hours of 12 a.m. and 7a.m. - I remember watching the sun come through my window each morning. It’s made up of lots of little pieces, all cut out and stuck on; even the sky and hills are made of separate pieces of paper. Nothing was actually drawn on the piece of paper it’s all stuck on, it’s not how I usually do things but if I messed up one little but I could just redraw it rather than ruining the whole thing. The most tedious parts to make were Chris’ shirt because I had to draw each square individually and then join the as well, and cutting out the ban-hammer in the bottom right was surprisingly hard. Every single detail of the picture is a reference to the podcast/shows, I still have the plan sketch and reference list knocking about somewhere. I listened to a lot of true crime videos while making it to the point that certain parts remind me of different cases: the brandy now reminds me of Peter Tobin, and the big spiral thing reminds me of Tim McLean (very harrowing case) - sorry that fact is a bit morbid but interesting nonetheless.
I did post this for a little bit back in July, but I received some rather awful messages so I took it down. Generally, Tom Scott/TechDif fans are lovely but there’s been a few that have taken a disliking to me for some reason so I’m hoping they don’t resurface again. I’m in a better head space now though, so even if they do I’m more equipped to deal with it this time.

Hozier
This was a quick sketch I did in April, I was getting bored with lockdown and decided to summon the bog man himself. There’s not really much more backstory than that, no poor mental health story, no fun twitter story - he’s just here. He’s vibing. I will say I’m particularly proud of his nose, I just think it’s one of the best noses I’ve ever drawn. His hand is okay, but I think that the hands on my Conchúr drawings are better. So there is the Hozi-Boi...

The Corpse Bry
I’ve talked about Bry on here before as well, I love him, he’s excellent, top lad. He is a living Tim Burton character, he’s 6′6, very skinny, and his legs are longer than my will to live. I was watching ‘The Corpse Bride’ a few weeks ago and suddenly had an idea and so ‘The Corpse Bry’ came to be. I gave him a little panda friend because the panda has always been his animal - he used to wear a panda beanie all the time and his album had a panda on the cover. Again, there’s not really a fun story behind this one, I guess it’s somewhat fun because it’s the first art I made after finishing my psychology exams in October so it was nice to actually have the time to draw.

James Bagshaw
Ginger talking about Temples for the third post in a row? it’s more likely than you think! I did this one last week, I’d had a bit of a wobbly day and had group therapy on Teams in the evening and I just couldn’t concentrate on what was going on and I ended up doodling Mr James E. Bagshaw, the glitter crying fraggle man himself. It’s a bare-bones drawing that I could definitely work into more but I’m happy with it as it is to be honest. I’ll be damned if I’m going to sit and add the individual bits of fringe to his jacket, just thinking about doing that makes me tired. Maybe I’ll get around to drawing the whole band at some point...

Alice in “Wonderland”
This one is from about 5(?) years ago, it’s not my typical style and was a “study” based on another artists work (basically i just had to copy this fellas work). I’ll be honest, this one has a sketchy backstory that I won’t go in to because it’s not exactly a nice one, and because of that I also won’t say who the artist is that it’s based on. Despite this, I’m still really proud of this one and I’m so sad that I never got this piece back after I got taken out the class. I’ve considered trying this style again, I’ve even joked about doing another Conchúr drawing in this style as a nod to my progression through GCSE art, eventually leading to Conchúr drawn in ink on music manuscript and stained with neon paint and dyes - it would be quite the project!
Tumblr media
So this has been quite a lengthy post so apologies about that but life goes on. Similar to the vinyl post, I’ll probably add to this as and when I make more art. Even if no one is reading these posts, I’m enjoying making them so that’s the main thing. It’s just nice to document things and the feelings that go with them. 💕

Peggy had been to the little airstrip near the village of Heathrow a few times during the war.  They’d been working on improving it into a real airport but hadn’t finished before VE day, so work had scaled back to a more leisurely pace, and the new London Airport had opened in 1946.  Seventy years later, the airport had swollen to cover more area than Peggy remembered the entire down as having.  There seemed to be positive miles of faded tarmac and undulating glass buildings, while any remnants of little Heathrow had been devoured as London itself grew inexorably bigger.
Toulouse breezed them through the buildings through Members Only entrances and VIP lounges and such things.  When a woman asked to see their passports, Toulouse just gave her a handful of banknotes, and they kept walking.
“Do you often fly without papers?” Peggy asked quietly.
“I never did that before, actually,” Toulouse replied with a smile on her face.  “I didn’t think it would work!  I almost want to report her for taking bribes, but then I’d be reporting myself, too.”
Everything else had changed so much, Peggy wasn’t sure what to expect from the inside of the airplane.  The cabin was larger and longer than anything she’d seen before, but to her surprise the seats were actually significantly smaller, the ceilings lower, and the leg room less.  It looked bad enough in business class, and when she looked down the aisle to where the economy passengers were boarding, she found them packed in like commuters on a subway train.  It was almost a shock that nobody had to stand.
“Flying used to be a luxurious way to travel,” she commented as she sat down.  Like the cars, the airplane had a seat belt.  She buckled it, just in case.
“Things stop being nice when normal people start being able to afford them,” said Toulouse.
“Did you call your father to tell him where you’re going?” Peggy wanted to know.
“I’m twenty-eight,” Toulouse told her.  “I don’t have to do that anymore.  He wouldn’t answer anyway,” she added with a sigh.  “He only answered the other night because I had Harvinder tell him it was an emergency.  I did tell Prince that I’m going to America with some friends.  If he asks why, I’ll say I’m visiting Junior.”
“Who’s Junior?” asked Howard.
“My oldest brother.  He died when I was still in school, and he’s buried there.”  Toulouse shrugged.  “It’s not the right time of year, but it’s a good excuse, I guess.”
The plane’s takeoff roll was much more gentle than Peggy remembered such things being, and its ascent far quicker.  She had to swallow repeatedly to make her ears pop, and it seemed like no time at all before they were sailing along to the muted roar of the jet engines, with the Bristol Channel glittering in the sunlight below them.  Looking out the window on her left, Peggy could see Cardiff, and she spotted Swansea before clouds moved in, blocking the view of the landscape below.  She settled back in her seat then.  It was going to be a long flight, and even without the clouds there would be nothing much to see outside over the ocean.
Toulouse had her laptop with her, and once the plane reached cruising altitude, she set the computer u on the tray table in front of her and began typing furiously.  Howard, in the aisle seat, took an interest.
“What are you working on?” he asked.
“My master’s thesis,” said Toulouse.  “I’m taking women’s history, and I’m specifically writing about Parliament Joan.  Her real name was Elizabeth Alkin.  She ran her own publishers, distributing propaganda for the Parliamentarians during the English Civil War, and used her connections to find and discredit people who were printing for the Royalists.”
“An ancestor of yours?” Howard asked Peggy.
“No, but something of a role model,” Peggy replied with a smile.  She’d first heard of the woman during her teens, from the other ladies in the codebreaking office, and had immediately set out to read all she could about her.
“People think of her mainly as a spy,” Toulouse said, “but she also had to be a businesswoman, and she wasn’t very good at it to start with.  I was at the National Archives because they’ve got some of her letters there, written in her very own handwriting.”
Peggy nodded.  “It is magical, isn’t it?  When you get to touch something from the past, knowing who held it before you?”  She thought of some of the things the SSR had recovered after the war.  There’d been famous art, and mystical artefacts, and things that had to have come light-years across the depths of space to be there.  With some of them she knew who had held them before her, but there were others she could only wonder about.
“It really is,” Toulouse agreed.
“Your family must be very proud of you,” said Peggy.  The words came out quite automatically, and it was only once they were already spoken that she remembered what Toulouse had already said about her father.
Toulouse sighed.  “I haven’t spoken to my mother in four years,” she said.  “And Daddy just says it’s good I’m keeping occupied.”
“I’m sorry,” Peggy said.  Her own father had died of a heart attack when she was only seven, and her mother had never had much money, but she had good memories of both as loving parents.  She looked at Howard – he didn’t talk much about his family but she had the definite impression that they’d never understood him.  He would be more qualified to commiserate with Toulouse about this.
“They don’t know what they’re missing,” Howard told her.  “Someday they’ll come to you begging for a favour, and you’ll be able to tell them to stuff it.  It’ll feel great.”
Peggy shut her eyes.  She could feel the headache coming on already.
The people who ran airlines knew that twelve-hour flights were deathly boring, and attempted to fill the time by showing movies.  The movies themselves, unfortunately, were absolutely dreadful.  There was one about a robotic policeman and another about a haunted doll, and Peggy got no more than ten minutes into either of them before she removed the little speakers she’d been given to put in her ears, and tried to sleep instead.
She doubted she’d be able to nod off, but she must have, because she woke hearing Howard and Toulouse talking quietly.
“So when I say he’s buried there,” Toulouse was telling him, “it’s more that he’s got his name on a monument, because they didn’t find his body.  Daddy hasn’t been to America for years because of it.  Whenever he has something to do there, he sends Cass.”
“Cass is… brother number two, right?” Howard asked.
“Yes, in between Junior and Prince,” said Toulouse.
“No sisters?”
“Just me,” Toulouse said.  “I’m the girl.”
Peggy closed her eyes again.  During the war she’d had a sense that things were getting better for women.  There’d been a new appreciation for their traditional roles, as well as for their ability to work at what were considered men’s jobs.  She’d stayed at the SSR because she’d wanted to finish what Steve Rogers and Sergeant Barnes had started, but also because she’d honestly thought she’d be useful and welcome there.  The men who worked there had other ideas.  They’d thought that with the war over, it was time for the women to go home.If she’d thought about it, Peggy would have hoped that seventy years would have resulted in some progress.  Yet here he was, sitting next to a young woman who was evidently much more intelligent and accomplished than her taste in hair dye would lead one to believe, but whose family didn’t care what she did because she was the Girl.  It was really terribly depressing.
They arrived in Toronto at nine in the evening local time, and during the layover they were able to get something to eat that wasn’t airplane food.  The cost of the sodas and sandwiches absolutely appalled Peggy and Howard both – nine dollars for tuna fish on white bread! – but Toulouse paid it without comment.  Apparently inflation was another one of the things that had simply gone on uninterrupted.
Flight schedules hadn’t changed much, either.  Their departure from Toronto was delayed, so it was closer to four than two-thirty when they finally reached Los Angeles.  A small bus took them from the airport to the Sandhill Hotel in Playa Del Rey, where all three of them collapsed into bed.
They had separate rooms within the suite this time, thank heavens, so if Howard and Toulouse had any more sex, Peggy at least didn’t have to listen to it.
Toulouse had sent their things to the hotel laundry overnight, so in the morning Peggy and Howard were able to put on clothes that were probably cleaner than when they’d bought them.  A woman came to drop them off while the group was having breakfast.  Peggy and Howard were sitting in their hotel bathrobes, and Toulouse’s outfit today was tight-fitting polka-dot leggings and a shirt with something on it that was quite unidentifiable – it had cartoon eyes and a smile, and a shape that Peggy chose to charitably assume represented a curl of chocolate ice cream.
The hotel employee, a brunette in her mid-twenties, kept looking at Toulouse out of the corner of her eye as she spread the clean clothes out on the bed.  Finally she straightened up and said, “before I go, I have to know – aren’t you Toulouse Sandhill?”
“Yes!” Toulouse replied, pulling out her wallet to give the woman a tip.  “And you’re… Madison,” she read off the nametag.  “Nice to meet you.”
Madison held out a wrist.  “I’m wearing your perfume!” she said.
Toulouse sniffed it.  “You are!  I’m so glad you like it!”
“Is it true that there’s a giant apocalypse bunker under this hotel?” Madison asked eagerly.  “I’ve never actually gone looking for it but I’ve seen websites about it, and people think it’s some sort of New World Order type thing.”
“I have no idea,” said Toulouse, but the idea didn’t seem to startle her.  “I’ve never been here before.  I can ask Cass about it, if you like.”
“No, no, I figured you wouldn’t say,” Madison replied, with a knowing smile.  “It was so cool to meet you!  Thanks for the tip!”  And she scurried out.
Peggy sipped her tea thoughtfully.  “You didn’t mention an apocalypse bunker,” she said to Toulouse.  Wasn’t it just a coincidence that an ‘apocalypse bunker’ was exactly where she and Howard had to go?
“I didn’t think of it,” said Toulouse.  “I don’t even know if it’s real.  Like I said, I’ve never been to this location before, but I know the Americans have apocalypse bunkers all over the country.  There’s a big one under the Stanley Springs Hotel in Tennessee, that was built for the government to hide in during the Cold War.  I’ve never been there, either, but they give tours.  I saw a YouTube video about it.”
“You said this hotel was ten years old,” Peggy recalled.  “When did the ‘Cold War’ end?”
“I was a kid.  Let me see…”  Toulouse grabbed her phone to look it up.  “1991 was when the Soviet Union fell apart, and I definitely know that the Playa Del Rey opened in 2006, because Junior had been in charge of the project and there was an eight-month delay after he died.”
“That’s fifteen years,” said Peggy.  Who built a bunker against a threat that had ended fifteen years ago?  She looked at Howard, to see what he thought.
He could tell where she was headed.  “You think maybe our clue is here in the hotel?” he asked.
That was an oddly reasonable hypothesis.  Knowing that they’d been involved with the Sandhill family on their little adventure through time, Peggy and Howard might well have left the time machine plans here, where they would be easily accessible without breaking any laws.  Or would they?  By 2006 Peggy would be retired and Howard would be dead, and with the building of the hotel delayed by the death of the owner’s son, all sorts of things might intervene.
“It could be,” she said.  “I don’t know.”  They could bury something here ahead of time, but how could they be sure it wouldn’t be dug up and lost when the hotel was built?  Then again, if it were here to find, that by itself would be their answer…
Howard pointed his breakfast fork at Toulouse’s phone.  “While we’re here, what’s that Internet got to say about die Glocke?”
“How do you spell it?” Toulouse wanted to know.
Howard told her, and she entered it in her search engine.  Her eyes darted back and forth over the results that came up.  “Okay, it says there was some Polish guy who wrote a book about it… according to him it’s supposed to be a weapon that kills every living thing for miles around, and it was built in a Nazi base near Wenceslaus Mine.”
That name made Peggy perk up.  “I’ve been to Wenceslaus,” she said.  “I was there with Steve, but there was nothing in it.  Somebody had warned them we were coming, and they had time to clean it out.”
“Warned them you were coming?” Toulouse asked.  “Like as if somebody came back from the future to tell them?”
At the time Peggy hadn’t thought of that – why would she? – but now it seemed worryingly plausible.  In that case… “Die Glocke can’t be the time machine itself, because Zola said they were searching for it, but yes, very like that.”  She took a bite of bagel and thought about it.  “I wonder whether perhaps they transmitted the entire contents of the base to the future, and now they’re hoping to get a machine in the right place at the right time to pick it up.”  In which case they were planning to materialize their superweapon right in the middle of London.
“That was winter 1944, wasn’t it?” Howard said.  “If they’ve had the time machine that long, then we’re in trouble, because just returning to 1948 won’t be enough to stop them.”
“No, it won’t.”  Peggy groaned.  “This just gets more complicated by the hour!”
“So what are you gonna do?” asked Toulouse.
She thought about it a moment.  The hotel might be worth checking out, but they didn’t actually know if it even existed.  The Sierra bunker still seemed the most obvious choice.  “We’ll stick to the original plan,” she decided.  “If there’s nothing in the bunker, we’ll come back here and look.”

Final evaluation
At the beginning of the project, I explored more abstracted themes around ‘Wonderland’ with my creative photoshoots focusing on mirrors and inner reflection. After conducting a character analysis of Alice, I wanted to create a garment for her reflecting her personality traits, animals she meets, things she experiences and how this influences her.
I was greatly influenced by Tim Walker’s White Rabbit photoshoot for Vogue Italia where the models are wearing over-sized rabbit heads (1). This made me look at the novel and the different characters Alice meets in more depth - leading me to create illustrations (2), a clay model (3) and eventually the tissue and wire mask seen in the final photos. I wanted the head piece to have more of a distorted feel instead of Disney-style “cute” rabbit. I researched the masks used in the 1973 ‘The Wicker Man’ (4) and how these added to the story line. Following along from this, I looked at artwork by Paula Rego’s ‘War’ (5) depicting human-like rabbits. This really helped me with the scale and the contoured look for the head piece as well as how it could be constructed.
When looking at possible silhouettes, colours palettes and construction methods, I came across costumes used in performance - including costumes by Georgia de Chirico in the play ‘Ball’ (6) from 1929 and the 1966 televised version of ‘Alice Through the Looking Glass’ (7). I really like both of these sets of costumes because of their block colouring. I incorporated this aspect into my final piece and illustrations by having the panels over the hips continuing into the trouser legs.
I also looked into the organic and nature aspect of Wonderland. Looking at flints (8) found in the fields surrounding my home helped for colouring and texture as well as sculptures by Peter Gentenaar (9) . He creates amazing, twisted pieces by creating a structure using bamboo and tissue paper. I wanted to use this method to create my sleeves - I used dope, modelling tissue and strimmer wire (10). However, this did not have the outcome I was after, so I manipulated fabric and used plastic boning instead to create a similar look.

Maths, Religion and Science - I developed my pattern cutting and construction method using mathematical working and calculations. I also looked into the darker aspect of Wonderland by watching a TED talk about Conscious Reality and how the brain processes our own reality, what calculation the brain makes to perceive it and how this relates to religious ideas of an afterlife. This links to Wonderland because of Alice’s experience and how this could be interpreted as either something that happens to her consciously or unconsciously in a dream.
I chose to focus on costume design, making, pattern cutting and dyeing. I picked these to focus on as I have not yet done a project with very complex pattern cutting, fitting and precision and really wanted to push myself. I chose dyeing as part of my project because I really enjoyed the process of printing my own fabric for the Inside Out project and the different effects I can make. This links very closely to my future plans as I want to do Costume Construction at university.
In the exploration stage of the project, I looked at the ‘Pool of Tears’ chapter from Alice in Wonderland. This led me into looking at how to make the fabric look wet and heavy without actually being that. I experimented with resin to give this look and it worked very well. I really wanted to include this sampling in my final piece but as my design developed this looked out of place with the overall aesthetic. I also sampled fabric manipulation techniques and dope/modelling paper to give the idea of expanding and contracting (as Alice does in size).

Overall view on outcome- broken down.
The colour palette – when deciding the colour palette for my overall look, I took a lot of inspiration from what Alice would see when falling down the rabbit hole. I used earthy tones - like the golden brown and greens - as an enhanced vision of nature, going into the more pastel colours of what I imagine Wonderland would have as you look up the costume.
In this project, I really focused on the pattern cutting, fitting and accuracy (12). I chose to do curved strips over the waist and creating a V shape in the centre front in order to exaggerate the waist and, with the under structures, help give a distorted figure shape. I found it difficult to get the point in the centre front even and continue the line accurately over the hips. This shape was inspired by James Charles 1940’s clothing (11) I decided to tell the story of ‘Absolem’ the caterpillar who helped Alice. This is shown by the stripes at the waist; they are thinner here representing his segmented body and wider at the bottom symbolising his growth into a butterfly.
I wanted to include pleated shapes down the legs on the light green side panel (13). However, when I tried to create these they did not work as I wanted them to, and I had to improvise. I hand dyed and made 60 flower shapes and hand sewed these over the hips whilst keeping the stripes visible. I chose the pastel colours pink, blue, purple and green as this is what I imagine Wonderland would have looked like before the Red Queen had all the flowers painted red. (14)
The colours used for the bodice were inspired by Disney’s animated version of Wonderland that most people associate with Alice. I used the white on the bodice to represent her curiosity and her youth. This also harks back to the original illustration -by John Tennial- of her white apron (15). As this costume additionally reflects characters Alice meets and her character development, this also resembles the white rabbit and the Queens servants who were painting the white roses red.
On the bodice, I wanted to include petal-like shapes. I used batik methods and hand dyed this piece. I originally wanted to dye them the same colour as the sleeves however something went unexpectedly in the dyeing process and created this turquoise colour (16). I am really pleased that this happened as this resulting tone linked the greens in the trousers to the blues in the sleeves. Having this on the front of the bodice really tied the whole costume together as before the bodice and trousers look very separate and not cohesive. I really like how the colour transitions from white to pale turquoise, growing out from the bodice.
For the sleeves, I tried lots of different techniques such as constructing a frame using tissue paper and dope inspired by Peter Gentenaar. However, this did not work in the way I wanted it to, so I resorted to using fabric manipulation. I dyed the white cotton using the dry ice and batik method to create different tones. As this is her most well know colour, I used the blue tones to represent Alice. I was very drawn to this colour and the idea of falling down a rabbit hole and different layers of the earth you would see. When out on a walk, I found blue Anglican flint and I really loved the texture and colours and included this into the sleeves. Another reason I chose this colour was to reflect her ‘Pool of Tears’ and the power of imagination.
To complete my costume, I created a mask from wire and tissue paper. I drew inspiration from Tim Walker’s photography from the ‘White Rabbit’ photoshoot for Vogue Italia where he used oversized animal’s heads. I started this process by drawing rabbit illustrations and developing this into a 3D clay model which I used as a basis for my final mask. I really like how the mask captures the white rabbit ambiance without being too cute/”Disney” and is instead darker and dream-like. I find this very effective as the White rabbit starts her journey and almost traps her in the world of Wonderland.
Overall, in my opinion my final outcome is very effective as I capture the dreamlike quality of Wonderland, with an uneasy feel. If I were doing this at college, I think my time management would be much better as I finished the garment 5 days late. I would have spent less time on the mock-ups and fitting but I feel this was necessary to complete my garment.  I would have also included different print techniques and maybe a form of metal work or vacuum forming that I could not do from home. However, if I completed this project at college, I would not have made this outcome as I have now. I am very happy with what I have achieved. If I were to make this again, I would fix the bodice as the white cotton was a bit larger than the interlining layer causing wrinkling across the chest. I would also have built in a form of structure to the bodice to bring the waist in more and to avoid the wrinkling at either side. I would change the back fastening to something strong and be more innovative with that to have a flush finish.
I would really like to improve my time management in the future and make a schedule that is more realistic but still pushing myself. Going forward into the next project I want to work on using a wide range of skills and different approaches and design I could use to create a better outcome.

Large bolts of our 500 denier polyester and large rolls of the now imaged papers are loaded and simultaneously run through fabric transfer machines. These machines feed the fabric and transfer paper together under extreme heat and pressure. At approximately 400 degrees the special inks “flash” from a solid to a gaseous state. The process is akin to little blasts of color as each pixel makes its journey into the fabric. The fabric is now dyed permanently by the process. Consistent attributes of dye sublimation include: vibrant color, incredible detail limited only by the texture of the fabric (and the resolution/quality of the provided file), ability to be cleaned and even subjected to commercial washing machines, huge size capabilities and because it’s fabric – sewing and finishing for any need is possible. Gharara Suits- 16 Most Stylish Ideas On How To Wear Ghararas
Gharara Outfits: One of the widely loved and used desi piece of clothing in South Asia, are ghararas. The royal piece of clothing, flared from the knee, has existed from ages and ages now. Traditional, colorful, blingy and a perfect fit for any desi gathering. Be it Pakistani women, Bangladeshi or Indian, living in any part of the world, the craze and love for ghararas is simply undying.
Along with lehengas, shararas, sarees and shalwar kameez or chooridars, ghararas are one of the most often worn and loved desi piece of clothing when it comes to dressing up for South Asian weddings or festivities. For instance, eid outfits, wedding outfits, festivity outfits, get together outfits, that is where ghararas, or the new addition to the gharara family, gharara pants come in handy. Gharara pants are the alternate option to heavy and flared ghararas, which can be worn on a daily basis with lawn kurtis.
What To Wear With Ghararas?
What’s the difference between sharara and gharara? For a lot of people, it is hard to differentiate between a sharara and a gharara, so to break it down for you all, a sharara is a one piece bottom, more like a skirt, with a flared, wide-legged trouser. While a gharara has two separate parts that are joined together ar the knee. This joint is usually hidden with the use of lace or embroidery. Shararas and ghararas are both traditional Indian wear, which originated from the Mughal era and have continued to make its way through the hearts of women around the globe even today, in 2019. The shararas are also more like palazzos in terms of their stitching styles, unlike the ghararas which are differentiated because of their unique stitching style. Additionally, ghararas are also more fitted at the thighs as compared to shararas.
In this article today, we will be talking about the latest gharara styles from 2018 and 2019, ranging from heavy embroidered to light and everyday, wearable for you all to stuff your wardrobe with all the gharara outfits there are. But, before we get into the outfits and its details, here are some quick tips for gharara outfits.
For rather light, subtle wear, gharara pants are a great substitute in place of ghararas.
Gold and silver traditional jhumkas and chandbalis go the best with gharara outfits.
Gharara and sharara outfits are most appropriate for a wedding or festive seasons.
A sharara is a pair of loose trousers paired with dupatta and a shirt. Often decorated with embroidery or glass work. A lehenga or a ghagra is a long full skirt with embroidery or glass work.
A farara is also similar to a gharara, except, it is not ruched at the knee. It’s rather a straight, tight trouser from the thighs with flares at the bottom.
Sharara, gharara, lehenga/ghagra or a farara, they are all traditional South Asian clothing. Accessories play the biggest role in styling these clothes.
Now moving on to the gharara outfits you all have been waiting for.
↓ 16 – Gharara Inspiration For Diwali & Navaratri
Here are some of our favorite Indian ethnic looks with ghararas that you’ll surely find inspirational:
Starting with some celebrity style, we have NoraFatehi’s simple but stunning outfit. A floral gharara with a solid white shirt. The dupatta’s border has been beautifully matched with the border of her gharara. There’s no doubt that dupattas enhance the beauty of any ethnic outfit which is why we highly recommend that you check out these 17 Types Of Dupattas And Tutorial On How To Wear Dupattas.
And here’s a simple but beautiful look for teenagers and young girls:
Located in New Delhi, Kunza Official is another great Indian brand to shop for ghararas. You can also visit their website to shop for gharara sets in the price range of INR 18000 to INR 30000. They’re selling solid colored, printed as well as embroidered and embellished ghararas so you will definitely find something worth buying, or you might end up buying a couple of sets.
↓ 15 – Mother Daughter Matching Ghararas
If you like the idea of dressing up in matching outfits with your little princess then nothing beats the classy ghararas. You can either get your daughter stitched a matching gharara or a lehnga since its easier to carry for young girls. Both of these outfits have been made by Indian designer Kamal Sood.
Here’s another look that sets twinning goals. These outfits are also from the brand Kunza Official.
↓ 14 – Bridal Ghararas
Even though it has been a few years since her wedding, we can not get over the royal vibes of Kareena Kapoor and the gharara she wore for her wedding. She wore a traditional golden embroidered gharara that originally belonged to her mother in law, Sharmila Tagore. However, Kareena chose to get the outfit further embellished by designer Ritu Kumar.
Of course, ghararas are not just ideal for brides but they’re also perfect for the bridesmaid. Here’s a beautiful look by Indian designer Reynu Taandon.
↓ 13 – Trending NOW: White Kurtas With Tie Dye Ghararas
A relatively new designer, Zari Faisal, has come up with the most amazing range of ghararas this year and she has paired them with kurtas from her own collection too. Here you can see one of our favorite trends, a white kurta with tie-dye block print gharara. The price range for her ghararas is between $20 to $50, but you can currently get this particular one on sale for just $11.76.
↓ 12 – Gharara Outfit For Eid
Nothing better and more subtle than a pastel gharara outfit, seen here worn by the beautiful Maryam Ishtiaq, the Pakistani, New York-based based fashion, beauty and lifestyle blogger. This outfit is from Suffuse by Sana Yasir, a perfect fit for a day wedding/mehndi/dholki, Eid festivities or any other festive occasion that you possibly have on your calendar. This outfit is a beautiful pleated plain off white gharara with a fully embroidered short shirt and a light purple banarsi dupatta to add some color, yet keeping it subtle and toned down. The shirt also has some colored embroidery here and there just so it does not look too bland. To add some more traditional touch and to complete the look, this beauty has paired the outfit with a pearl and golden choker and some gold earrings.
Here are some more Eid gharara inspirations of our favorite influencers from around the world. For more ideas, you should check out these 2019 Latest Style Eid Dresses Designs for Girls.
↓ 11 – Gharara With Gown
This outfit is from Faraz Abid Sheikhu, FAS Design Studio. A beautiful fusion of modern fashion with traditional gharara fashion. This beauty here is seen wearing a pleated at the bottom gharara with a crop shoulder embroidered satin coat, and a dull green blouse under the gown. I think it is a perfect blend of colors with the green blouse and the grey gharara, almost gharara pants, and grey gown style upper. The color palette of the whole outfit stays the same, dull yet shiny because of the fabric. Do not look away from the tassels on the upper, it could be a perfect fit for a wedding/mehndi/dholki or a festive occasion like Eid or any other.
↓ 10 – Off-shoulder Top With Gharara
Ankita, an Indian, Toronto based creator, and influencer, leaves us absolutely in awe of her and her style with the outfit ideas she outs forward. This beautiful outfit she has been seen wearing here is an embroidered net gharara with a pink embroidered, off one shoulder short shirt and a cute and light net dupatta. The gotta work border on the dupatta looks very royal and shiny, I totally dig this style. Some gold jewelry to go with it, and it’s a look! You can get this whole outfit and fabric stitched at your own, these fabrics are easily available in the local markets at very affordable rates.
↓ 09 – How To Wear A Black Gharara
Another one of the Ankita‘s gharara outfit ideas is this black beauty. Black is usually a very monotone color, so some colorful embroidery on it, or a colorful top with a black dupatta and a lower like this one can put life into a black attire. Here, she has been wearing a black gharara with orange work on it and a black plain dupatta with a colorful mid-length shirt that puts a whole new character in the outfit. To make this rather not-so-blingy outfit more appropriate for an event, she has added some beautiful jewelry to it. Some golden jhumkas, a beautiful, heavy mathapatti – a headband worn with traditional attires, at weddings or festive occasions. This is a full look for an in-house dholki or a sangeet, it’s not too heavy but the accessories take it up a notch. She made up this attire from a local market of India as well.
↓ 08 – The White Beauty
This outfit came out of a collaboration of Hira Attique, the Islamabad based beauty, and fashion blogger, with Sapphire Pakistan, and we can not be thankful enough to both for portraying this beautiful gharara outfit for us. This mesmerizing banarsi dupatta is what I am loving about this look, with a lightly embroidered shirt and gharara. The details of this outfit are to die for, the embroidery above the knee flares and the neck area which is embroidered like beautiful malas for necklaces. The full sleeves with embroidery make the outfit more decent and elegant. This is a really cute and modest look that’s perfect for any religious occasion too like Diwali or Eid. The best part is that this dress has been stitched from a simple 3-piece suit which means that you don’t need to make a lot of effort to bring together an outfit like this.
↓ 07 – Best Gharara Color For Summers
Another one from the collaboration of Hira Attique and Sapphire Pakistan. This light and elegant light purple gharara, which is like coolness to the eyes, a perfect fit for the summer weddings. A beautiful cotton gharara paired with a long shirt and a net dupatta, bringing back the 80’s vibe. The gharara is farshi, which means it is rather long in size and of more width. This fashion blogger has paired this subtle, decent gharara outfit with silver chandbalis and left her hair open. I am a sucker for the traditional gharara styles, so for me, this outfit is the best for any occasion, hands down. So whether you’re hosting a party or attending a get-together with friends, this is the best ethnic look you can go for. The gharara adds royalness to the entire outfit but the color and the fabric keeps it minimal and elegant, nothing over the top and perfect for minimalists like me.
↓ 06 – Pastel Drama
This outfit by Maria B has some top-notch pastel drama going on. Pastel colors have been trending since 2017, and it seems like they are not going to say goodbye to us for a long time, still. And we are not complaining as well. Nothing looks more elegant, classy and royal than traditional wear in pastel colors, of course, bright or dark colors have their own charm and drama going on, but pastel colors are the top trend these days. This mesmerizing Maria B ensemble is a perfect fit for any eid festivity, the colors make it appropriate for lunch and the royal gharara makes it a dinner appropriate outfit as well. Some pearl and silver jewelry to complete the look is not a bad idea at all. This outfit is from the Eid 2018 collection, you can still grab it from the stores or online from the site. And even if it gets out of stock, we’re sure you’ll be able to find something similar and equally elegant from their website.
↓ 05 – Celebrity Style
Another Faraz Abid Sheikhu outfit has been seen here adorned by the beautiful Hira Mani, a Pakistani drama actress. This silk golden shirt and red jamawar gharara is definitely the 90’s vibes. The era of elegance and classiness, which our generation has left miles behind for street style and chic fashion. A golden, silk, gown style short frock, with a fawn colour inner, paired with a bright red jamawar gharara with a golden colour net dupatta. Golden color embroidery on the shirt and on red and gold embroidery on the dupatta make for a great contract with the red gharara. To complete the look, which obviously can not be done without jewelry, she has added jhumkas, neckpiece, and a headpiece set. This is a full wedding look for winters as well as summers.
And next up we have the renowned actress Dia Mirza, wearing a metallic gharara with coral pink embroidered kurta.
↓ 04 – Gharara With Lawn Kurtis
Another trending style this year has been these plain gharara or gharara pants with lawn and chiffon kurtis. It has been seen in the ready to wear collection of many brands, like Kayseria for Eid 2019. This gharara outfit is from the same Eid collection. The bright colour printed kurta from is a must have for this Eid, as we know how hot it is around Eid in most Asian countries. Perfect summer wear for get-togethers or even a casual get together. Pair this outfit with some big, dainty accessories like jhumkas, some golden or silver bangles, and the look is complete. Comfort and trendy both come together in this look, what else can anyone ask for in extreme summer heat? And if you love wearing kurtis, then don’t miss out these 18 Ways to Wear Palazzo with Kurtis.
↓ 03 – Casual Gharara Attire
Same as the Kayseria style, Ego has come out with a Summer collection with ghararas this year as well. Goes to show how much ghararas and gharara pants are trending this year. This casual, subtle yet elegant ensemble from Ego is a must have. The fabric is light and the colour sure is like pleasing to the eyes. Because of the short peplum shirt, you get those 90s vibes from this outfit, without being outdated in terms of fashion. This tea pink color is also trending this year if you have not noticed already going through the latest collections. Some silver bangles and jhumkas or chandbalis to complete the look would be like a cherry on the top.
↓ 02 – Semi-Formal & Formal Style Ghararas
Fatima Irfan Sheikh, the beauty and fashion Instagram and youtube influencer, also known by the name of her page Glossips, was seen wearing this fawn colour gharara outfit from Maria Nasir Online. Off topic, but don’t you absolutely love this girl’s gorgeous hair and hair colour, I’m personally a fan. This gorgeous beauty, wearing this fawn net attire is giving us major gharara outfit goals. Ideal for any event where all your relatives are present because let’s be clear, you would want to flaunt this dress in front of everyone, won’t you? A plain net dupatta and a plain net gharara paired with an embroidered short shirt. This brand is originally located in Norway but they ship worldwide and Pakistani influencers have become their fans. Don’t you want to try this brand out too?
↓ 01 – Gharara Pants
Another one of outfit from Ankita but this one is the substitute, the gharara pants. More comfortable, easily carryable, and chic and they can be pulled off on everyday clothes.
For a more casual, everyday look, you can opt for plain gharara pants and wear them with any of your favorite shirts and kurtis:
