So I already have an area where I’m struggling, I’m using Duolingo and that’s kinda how it’s teaching me, a few hiragana everyday and then throw in a few the next day while reviewing the others (I’m also practicing writing them on my own) but like… I’m getting the hiragana, like how to pronounce them etc and that’s all fine but I’m not really remembering words, if that makes sense? Like if you show me word the word “blue” I can say it but I have no clue it means blue lol
hmmm i honestly dont put too much stock in duolingo being a good language learning tool lol >_< it feeds you stuff and you put in the right answer but it doesnt make you actually think and talk and write on your own (which is especially important for japanese)…… i think its a good starting point and guide but you should take time during the week to put it away and practice writing yourself!!!! practice the characters but also literally on a piece of paper write “あお - blue” and so on until it sticks. the important part of language retention is GENERATION like u have to pull it from ur own brain and say/write/use it or it just wont stick in there!!!!! try to make and remember as many words as possible w the characters u know thats what i used to do :)

I'm trying to learn Japanese on duolingo. is it any good? it's making me translate numbers it hasn't taught me is duolingo meant to be supplementary? I know you're not a language blog but you seem nice and like you know what you're doing, I trust your words. also I feel like I'll never *really* learn since there seems to be no writing on duolingo I just read and tap the character
duolingo is supplementary, as you said, and for japanese specifically you need writing practice, as you said... duolingo wont teach you any language if you log on, get your xp for the day, and go off to do something else. you NEED constant exposure to a language to actually learn it. if you can afford it i highly recommend buying the Genki grammar and kanji textbooks along with their respective workbooks. its also super, super, super important you listen to native speakers a lot. this can mean rewatching movies and tv shows, so i prefer streams. theres quite a few high quality youtube channels dedicated to teaching japanese, so look around!
basically, duolingo is just a fun memorization game on its own, but its not too bad used in conjunction with other things. hope this helped.

Duolingo: learning a language Experience.
Tumblr media
Duolingo, learning new a language experience.
“language is the road map of a culture” (Smith. F). When we learn a new language, we also learn the culture of its speakers and that what make learning languages interesting. Nowadays, to learn a new language won’t cost you a thing but your phone subscription bundle. There are a lot of free application that can help you learn the language, Duolingo is one of the most used application I the field of language learning. However, it does not tech you the culture, for me a language mean nothing without its culture. Unfortunately, Duolingo neither tech you the culture nor the grammar.
According to Duolingo Data there are over 100 million user that use Duolingo around the world where the most learned language through the app is English. However, a lot of the users couldn’t speak the language they spend their time learning. In my experience with Duolingo, that last no long, the way they tech a language will only build your vocabulary very strong but in term of grammar, which is inductively thought, there isn’t much to speak about. A communication to happen need both vocabulary and grammar cause you vocabulary wont allow you to send the right message you encoded in your brain.
After using Duolingo, a can tell that it uses a variety of teaching methods nonetheless the app uses the oldest method of learning that is translation method. Where there will be a sentence that you either translated to your language or to the target language. Moreover, the sentence that is meant to be translate include words that you have not thought before and sometimes the sentence don’t make any sense. For example, there is this sentence that I found funny but not necessary “je suis un chat” which literally translated to “I am a cat.”! I think if they replace the sentence with one that can be used in daily basis would be much butter, because one of the ways of learning a language is using useful and meaningful chunks.
On the other hand, the activity in Duolingo are covering the four skills in different rate. The most focused on skills are writing and reading. Almost three-quarters of the questions are about reading and writing where the speaking ones are more like reading than speaking where you will be asked to repeat a sentence after hearing it four as many as you want, due to the repeat button that has no usage limit. The listening part is also limited to listening to latter sounds and to sentences. Moreover, the fact that they teach you language through questions and answers without any chance to a real communication is senseless to me.
All in all, Duolingo is a great app if you are looking for a good vocabulary practice however if you are looking for a good real language practice where you can interact and communicate then this is not the app you want. The app uses a variety of language learning methods, but it relays on the translation method more than the others. The activities are in the form of question and answers where there are no activities that include real time communication.

tbh I’ve kinda lost track on what I post on my personal tumblr and on my studyblr, so I might have already made a post on this;
my future plans have kinda been...trashed, in the last month. At the beginning of August I got emails from both universities I applied to (on that I definitely made a post); I was accepted for history but not english, and that really pulled the rug from under my feet because it was genuinely shocking; with my final high school grade I was sure I would get accepted in at least one of them, but apparently this year there were way more applicants than in the previous three years.
I wanted to be a teacher for history and english - I had thought about doing another gap year, about working and saving up money, but honestly the last year was really shitty. As pretentious as that sounds, I really love to learn, and while I did learn on my own (continued with norwegian and started spanish), just self studying isnt really enough. the thought about finally having a schedule again, going to lectures, having actual things to do excites me so much its ridiculous and I know that that wont last and that soon uni and exams will also stress me, but rn I’m just excited
So finally I decided to start going to uni this year anyway; in two weeks I’m going to enroll in the university I originally thought I’d study “teaching profession” (is that the right term? damn why doesnt the word ‘Lehramt’ exist in english), but instead now I’m doing scandinavian studies and history.
Originally I had thought that maybe I’d do this one year just for “fun” and then next summer apply to universities for which I would have to move out but who have a lower grade requirement. but honestly... I dont know if I want to do that. becoming a teacher was a safe choice; I like learning, I like teaching, I think I would have been a good teacher & content with that job.
but truthfully I like learning more than teaching, and damn since the holidays in norway where a really lovely woman that was there spoke with me at least once a day so that I could practice speaking, I’m more passionate about norwegian than ever before.
last year I had also considered studying scandinavian studies because I love the language, the country and the culture, but ultimately decided against it because I didnt want to just start studying something without knowing that I’d get a job with that degree in the end. well the tables have turned - I still dont exactly know what kind of job I’ll end up with, but I know that I am so excited to finally meet other people interested in Scandinavia, to finally learn the language through official courses (althought I want to thank Duolingo & memrise for everything they’ve taught me), to also start with Latin, then continue spanish and in a year or two begin with russian.
my ultimate job would honestly be being payed for learning all the languages
soo yeah, thats my plan
this got way longer than I thought, I just wanted to quickly document where I stand with my studies, hope all of you have a nic estart to the weekend x

So Duolingo is fantastic and all. and I’m learning a lot. but like.. there are certain issues. And like.. I need someone to talk to so I can actually use the words and not just solve puzzles. Also.. Grammar. Why wont it teach me the bendy bits?
Are there any like.. Russian, and/or Finnish speakers out there among my followers I could maybe talk to? That would be great.
