Hey!!! Finally getting around to answering this haha.

How did you discover it or get interested in the show?

It was actually @minim236 who inspired me to watch it back when I had my old blog! Anyway, the trailer had Jacob Anderson in it and I was like Greyworm ok let's go! And although I had not read the book or watched the movie yet, Claudia the child vampire is so well known I already knew about her, so was interested in that concept. Naturally, she became my favourite character :)

An unpopular opinion?

I feel I have soooo many unpopular opinions haha, but I'll say what I think is my most unpopular one, just because I feel like I'm following the right people here who won't mind:

Lestat as a character just does not compel or interest me in any way. I don't care about Loustat, about Lesmand, or any other relationships that involve him. Sam Reid did an amazing job, and got me drawn to him initially, but by the end of episode 3 I was getting a bit, well, and by the end of Episode 5, all sympathy for him went out the window, as did my interest. And full respect to other people who are still invested in his character btw! But I feel like because they made the abuse blatant rather than just brushing over it, many book fans were pissed, so now had to argue contend with a whole bunch of people not liking their special boy whom they've cherished for years. I disagree. I feel like the writers did a brave thing by not brushing over the negative impact Lestat has throughout the entire series. They, in a way, made the relationship more human and real, as this type of abuse is unfortunately still very normal today. They're not showing him through rose-tinted glasses, they're asking you to really look at it, so it'll be much more of a writing challenge to make him likeable and redeemable again to the general audience. It's an interesting concept, but until then, I just don't care at all about him! I don't feel anything when it comes to the romantic scenes between him and Louis either now, and I'm not excitedly waiting to explore his side of the story in the future seasons. The appeals to 'them being vampires' and 'this is supposed to be a gothic romance' has no affect on me, not because I 'can't handle dark subject matter', but because.... Lestat's not really imo the complex character everyone makes him out to be. His behaviour is actually pretty predictable and there's not that much there for me to work with, even as a villain. It's just: sad boy with tragic backstory ends up repeating cycle of abuse that was inflicted on him. Is extremely lonely with an ill temper. Uses dominance to feel in control and to hide his massive insecurities. Is "bad" but secretly has a heart of gold. Mommy/daddy issues. Loves usually only one person more than anything and it's seen as his salvation, but struggles with that relationship because he's emotionally stunted and can't communicate properly. It's something you've seen a million times already. It's what makes the much more layered and harder to grasp characters like Claudia and Armand so much more interesting to me, the vampires who are the most vampire-like of them all, yet ironically get a lot of hate and are mischaracterized from the same people who shout 'they're vampires!', but that's another discussion for another day.

Have you read or watched anything because it was referenced in the show?

I have! I watched Nosferatu, and read Madame Bovary and Marriage in Free Society, although I was going to read Madame Bovary anyway because my little sister heavily recommended it (she massively likes 'unlikeable' female characters and compared her to Anna Karenina, which she didn't like as much due her being too likeable. Which is funny because apparently Tolstoy originally wrote Anna to be an ugly, evil, conniving character who hurt her completely innocent husband and lover and son, but as he was writing, the character became more and more beautiful and sympathetic, and the husband and lover became more incompetent and unkind). I currently have The Doll's House and Nausea next on my list! (I really need to read The Doll's House, it's been on my list since I watched Bojack Horseman lol).

Although this probably doesn't count, because of the after show podcasts, I was inspired to also read The Gilda Stories because they had Jewelle Gomez make an appearance. I ended up being a bit mad afterwards because I soooo wished I read this book in high school, as I was an angry teenager still in the closet then, and this book might have helped me calm down a little lol. There's just something so different and radical about the way Gomez writes her vampires: in a lot of other media, the vampire/monster finally obtains the ability to have cathartic releases of rage due to their isolation/repression and/or abuse, but here, her main character opts for kindness, compassion, and community each time (she still uses violence and murder if needed to defend herself and others, but doesn't let violence consume her entire being). That was very refreshing, having the character be able to do so much damage and take revenge without consequence, yet instead find more fulfillment in the bonds they make with others and refusing to let other people bend her right to actually, well...live.

what are your opinions on the different lestats? and louiss? claudias and armands?

tomstat: a fantastic lestat, did his homework, very fun very angry gave validation to everyone who thinks lestat is lying about his height. flamboyant and cruel and charming he captured it all very well. writing wise anne just didn’t incorporate anything from the other books so he was pretty shallow.

musicalstat: BORINGGGGFF anne tried to make him woe is me i did nothing wrong SHUT UUUUUUUP. i loved his storyline with nicki in this one even though it was less insane and complex and him and gabrielle had great moments but god he was so boring. hugh panera or whatever did a garbage job

qotdstat: still haven’t watched it but i hate him on principal

samstat: my bestest friend sam reid who lives in my hippocampus and we compare tvl annotations teehee. my little science experiment i love to poke him with a stick. yeah of course he’s the best lestat no comparison he’s possessed <3 and best written as well! even if he doesn’t reference macbeth </3

rat piss: the worst louis i’ve ever seen i hope he drowns in a puddle of his namesake! writing wise he’s meh i think cher would’ve done a much better job with the script

musicallouis: he’s such a cutie he just wants things to be chill…..plus he actually was visibly in love with lestat awwww embraaace it embraaaaace it. he should’ve been in it more as is the case with every iteration of louis since the dawn of time

kirstenclaudia: LITTLE BABY she’s just a little baby she didn’t do anything that’s a baby. the cutest lil babe. they captured her so well in the movie i love her sooooo much

banderasmand: meh. i love antonio banderas but he was Meh and i stand by that. i think by changing armand SO drastically you just kind of. lose the whole character. anyway he was a perfect santino!

me, a man who has not read A Word of the "his dark materials" series: I think I should figure out what daemons tvc characters would have

this is an open discussion. I will need to hear y'alls input on this.

so. I have started with lestat. and I present, for your consideration: the evillest golden retriever. ever.

my argumentation:

handsome

blonde

ok and now seriously

a hunting animal

look. "lelio", the kind kid that was obsessed with proving himself useful by providing for his family, the happy-go-lucky amateur actor, definitely had a big nice dog as a daemon. what happened later is. a different story

sidenote: obsessed with inserting this daemon into the whole wolf-hunting sequence and the subsequent depressive episode. lestat mentions that when he was lying in bed afterwards he felt cold because he was usually sleeping with dogs. here it's marginally better because he would still be lying in bed with a dog but also WORSE because. that's the only one that survived. it's that more obvious how lonely he is.

obsessed with the concept of a "puppy love" turning into something entirely different. an evil golden retriever has the same uncanny valley effect as lestat himself, I think

With Claudia it's difficult. on one hand, I really want her to have a canine as well, for some good old mother-daughter parallels. but also. she just isn't. my thoughts on her are:

1) A Burmese Python

this is vibes based. also. love the idea of her having a fuck-off giant snake. works great for all versions of claudia. amc claudia would wear her as a boa.

also a carnivore, but not a hunting animal!!! because!!! you see!!!! despite everything!!!! both lestat and louis will always be more tame/human than her!!!!! because they had actual time to grow up!!!!! and live as humans!!!!! unlike her!!!!

not particularly related to the snake form specifically but love the idea of both louis and lestat being Extremely slow to pick up on the fact that the daemon has settled. like they would probably go "hey why won't you change into something smaller" for a full 3 months before they fucking COMPREHEND

2) a black footed cat

I like this option less (because the fuckoff giant snake is simply more fun) but. it's the smallest and also deadliest feline in the world. this is very much hashtag her

kind of draws a parallel to gabrielle (who. should clearly have a lioness. this is just common sense)

so. yeah. those are my Thoughts. as I've mentioned above, Gabrielle clearly has a lioness (going insane about Gabrielle having the mane that the lioness doesn't.......), also I think Nicki should also have some sort of bird... (maybe a carrion crow?) and I am thinking some sort of canine for armand as well. a maned wolf? don't know. anyway. give me your thoughts!!!! I am going insane!!!

Okay, please share what it was like watching Sam and Jacob being cast back when the announcement was made! Curious to see what fans of the book thought when they saw them. And Bailey!

!! so I followed anne religiously on social media (naturally) and remember vividly when she sold the rights in 2016. i had called my friend v and was like 'WE'RE GETTING TVC' and she and i freaked out. but then it just. didn't happen. and there would be news, and then nothing, and then news sometimes, then nothing. i remember the last kind of "big" thing i saw was an article in 2019 (which i posted on my instagram story so it's in my archive lol) that ultimately, at the time, led to nowhere.

(i feel like the article was about the show moving from the original network that had it OR was about the showrunner changing, because there's a whole story there too)

anyway, i very much became a 'i'll believe it when i see it' kind of person and didn't check too much into anything.

then all of a sudden: august 2021.

i'm sitting in my shitty apartment, getting ready for my first year of teaching and nauseous at the thought, and i'm doom-scrolling and amc has put out casting announcements. and i absolutely lost my mind.

you see, there have been fancasts and everything since the books came out, and i have seen some pretty insane casting suggestions for tvc. i remember cody fern was a big fancast for lestat around this specific time period. i, personally, had very much made up my mind that i didn't want to know the actors that got cast as lestat and louis, specifically, because i would have preconceived notions of who they were and would get in my head.

i saw jacob's casting announcement first and had a very mixed set of emotions. i sort of vaguely knew jacob from got; i never really watched got, but my parents did and i would see about everything in passing. he was my mom's fave character <3 but! i had not real opinion of him other than he was beautiful and for that i very much approved. i will say, however, that when the casting announcement was first made i didn't know/they hadn't said (??) about the time change and i spent a lot of time really confused how he was going to play a 1700s wealthy plantation owner :)) and then when i learned of the time change his casting made sense, but it added this whole different level of anxiety because like ?????? what did that meannnnnn for me. but i knew he was talented and i knew he was beautiful and i was like 'this is fine. i trust this' and like ?????????? oh my god did strike gold with jacob anderson. beautiful, stunning, talented, otherworldly boy.

i saw sam's casting announcement second and i need to preface it with this: since 2016 i had lived in this state of almost fear at the idea of casting lestat. lestat walks so many lines, lines of villain and hero and lover and antagonist and beauty and monster and prince and pauper and vampire and human and mentor and student and father and son and husband and etc. etc. etc. like lestat is fully, 100000% the hardest casting because he really is the vampire chronicles. i did not know sam reid when i saw him. the picture they posted for the announcements was with very short hair, a fair amount of stubble, and i remember looking at him and thinking that i couldn't really see it but also i've seen amazing transformations and so i was like 'we'll see.' i purposefully did not look up ANYTHING about him, did not watch anything he was in, to avoid getting in my head. it wasn't until SDCC that i really took the time to look at him and, in hopefully the least weird way possible, i have never been more attracted to another person in my entire life. and so much of it was centered on personality. like hollywood is full of beautiful people so it wasn't just that sam is incredibly attractive and stunning, but the way he spoke of the books, of lestat, of loustat, his utter understanding of what this was, how important it is, him having a multitude of copies of the books, some since his adolescence, just -- everything. and then, of course, i watched iwtv and i can't believe i ever questioned if someone could play lestat the way he need to be played because sam is the definition of perfection. he is everything, he is superb. he is unmatched in his talent and we're so fucking lucky to have him.

bailey made me nervous too, namely the age change! anyone that's read iwtv knows that the true horror of claudia is the idea of this FIVE. YEAR. OLD. CHILD. running around in that child body for eternity. being a woman in that body. and so making her 14 was like :)) like i got it from a filming perspective; if you cast an actual 5/6 year old and it takes three/four years to film the first two seasons (as it is) then suddenly she's 8-10 years old and the growth of a child from 5 to 8 or any of the other options is just crazy !!!! but also i was like oh nooooooooooooo a time period change and a significant claudia age change whyyyyy and then i watched it and it was perfect. and bailey was this perfect love child of sam and jacob's likeness and she embodied so many of lestat and louis' traits in a way that made her so much their child it was scary.

and basically it was my nervousness at the time period change and casting lestat and the aging up of claudia all being proven to be utterly beautiful things, perfect and a gift, truly, to this story that made me decide, then and there, that i would not question these writers until i felt like there was something right on my screen that made me. i would trust all of their changes, all of their choices, because they have yet to ever let me down.

and the casting -- i know so many of us have talked about it, but we are so incredibly lucky on all fronts. beautifully talented and wonderfully kind people are playing our vampires. what more could we ever ask for????

@spookyvalentine made a great "50 questions about Commander Shepard" list and I promised I would fill it out when I got home from vacation, and then my flight got delayed and I got stuck in the airport soooooo meet ✨ Celine Shepard ✨

1. Why did Shepard enlist? Any regrets?

Celine doesn’t really have a choice - once they realize she’s a biotic they throw her into training right away. but she probably would have done it anyway - after Mindoir she’s looking for anything that can make her feel safe. she doesn’t end up regretting it, not really, but she does sometimes daydream about the life she could have had instead of becoming The Commander Shepard.

2. How does your Shepard feel about having a yeoman assigned to them in 2? And in 3?

she doesn’t really think about it? to her it’s just someone else on the crew. on a personal level, she’s always pretty leery of Kelly, and while she never does end up fully trusting her she would consider her a friendly acquaintance. Celine and Traynor are a totally different story - they hit it off right away, and Traynor ends up becoming once of her closest friends.

3. What’s their relationship with Anderson?

he’s her mentor! post-Mindoir she really looks at him with pure hero worship, but the longer she’s enlisted the more she starts to see him as a ~real person~ and after Akuze she starts coming to him for career advice. she really tries to model her time in the Alliance on what would make Anderson proud.

4. Is your Shepard any good at poker?

she’s *awful* and people love to tease her about it. but she genuinely loves to spend time with her friends and so she almost never turns down a game.

5. How well does Shepard know their crew? Not just the companions, but the folks making up the Normandy?

in ME1 & ME3 - really, really well. she goes out of her way to talk to everyone and makes sure she knows everyone’s name. she believes that doing so makes her a better leader.

in ME2 - not well at all. she avoids a lot of the Cerberus crew because she feels like she can’t trust them, though there are a few exceptions.

6. Initial reaction to EDI? Does it change?

she’s wary. at first she only thinks of EDI as a Cerberus tool, and is terrified of being spied on. but her open-mindedness about AI & her conversations with EDI really open her eyes, and she apologizes to EDI about her initial misgivings before going through the Omega 4 relay.

7. Does their love interest move into their quarters?

ABSOLUTELY, she’s encouraging Garrus to move in the first chance she gets. he’s a little bit hesitant (chain of command and Turian propriety and all that) but Celine is rather…..convincing. she wins him over. 😉

8. What is their reaction to the Alchera mission? And after?

she does not take it very well. once she gets the assignment she drops everything to get to Alchera as fast as she can. she spends hours down on the planet - it’s really the first time she’s confronting the fact that she died, and by the time she gets back to the Normandy she’s a mess. luckily, Joker and Garrus are waiting for her, and they sit with her in her cabin for hours until she’s finally able to fall asleep.

9. What type of fighter is your shepard? Do they fight with honor, or do they fight dirty?

vanguard baybeeeeeee. & if you ask Celine, she’ll swear up and down to you that she fights with honor. if you ask the person who just tried to shoot one of her friends and then sees her charging at them from across the battlefield? wellllll that’s another story.

10. Does Shepard keep any pets? The hamster, fish, something else?

Celine LOVES animals. following her resurrection, adopting the space hamster and the fish are some of the first things that she really does just for herself. she’s devastated when she has to turn herself in and leave her animals behind, but she uses her one hour of outside time per day during house arrest to feed stray cats that live on the Alliance base.

11. What order does Shepard pick up companions in me2? Miranda&Jacob, Kasumi, Zaeed, Garrus, Mordin, Grunt, Jack, Samara, Thane, Tali, Legion

12. Does Shepard have any nicknames? What do they think of em?

she doesn’t, and she usually discourages people from calling her anything other than her title or her name. Vega gets away with calling her Lola because they have a brother/sister relationship, but it took a while for them to get there & he’s the only one she tolerates it from. the only other exception is Garrus, who occasionally lets slip a “my love” or something similar, to which Celine always reacts by going full heart eyes emoji. (I have a lot of backstory here to explain why she feels this way but this answer is already long hahahaha)

13. How does your Shep react to teasing/ribbing?

she loves it & she gives as good as she gets. teasing is the building block to friendship for her.

14. Any good at flirting?

she is, but only on accident. when she’s trying to flirt with someone she gets in her head and stumbles over her words, but she’s a natural flirt and doesn’t realize it.

15. What colors does Shepard prefer for their armor?

Celine loves pink. It is her all time favorite color, and she starts wearing pink armor the second she’s able to get away with it.

16. Is Shepard a drinker? History of other substances? Do they struggle with sobriety

In between Mindoir and Akuze, Celine was theee poster child for self destructive behavior. She drank and smoked A LOT, and most of the times she got in trouble it was for coming back to base late after a night of partying. After Akuze she really gets her act together, only drinking socially and not falling back on those habits…..until she gets resurrected, and can’t sleep, and there’s a bar on her ship. She spends a good portion of ME2 drinking too much, and only manages to stop again with Thane’s help. she has a few rough patches after that, but is always able to pull herself back out and eventually is able to drink socially again.

17. How does Shepard react to attention? Do they enjoy it?

she HATES it. being known as ~the survivor of Mindoir~ really fucked her up, and she views fame and attention from people she doesn’t know as something that will eat her alive. for Celine, the fame is one of the hardest parts of being the figurehead against the Reapers, and for the most part she lets other people address the media

18. Who’s the dream team? Which companions does Shepard fight best with and why?

ME1 - Garrus and Wrex

ME2 - Garrus and Thane (sniper squad my beloved)

ME3 - Garrus and Liara

19. Are there any companions your Shepard just absolutely cannot vibe with or relate to

Celine and Zaeed butt heads A LOT, and it takes a long time for her to find middle ground with him. And while she ultimately comes to see Miranda and Jacob as friends, the Cerberus stuff gets in the way for a really, really long time.

20. Does Shepard enjoy looking for resources and upgrading gear, or do they see it as a chore?

she adores it! her dad was a mechanic, and so she grew up tinkering with all sorts of farm equipment. her love of building things and taking things apart is what she initially bonds with Garrus and Tali over

21. Do you have any AUs for your shepard?

no, but give me some time.

22. What’s the last thing Shepard ate before the final reaper showdown?

Celine would forget to eat at all if Garrus wasn’t looking out for her. He gets her a random MRE and she just sort of eats it without tasting it while trying to get ready

24. Who does Shepard turn to for advice? For comfort? Who do they like to gossip with

25. How emotionally articulate is your Shepard? Do they emote well?

She *can* be emotionally articulate, but she shuts down in moments of duress. Post-Akuze she attended A LOT of therapy, and so she’s able to recognize when she’s lashing out or having PTSD symptoms. she just doesn’t always remember what to do during those moments.

26. Does your Shepard have a romance? Who are they, and what drew Shep to them?

ME1 - Celine has the *biggest* crush on Liara, but doesn’t want to take advantage of her after the death of her mother/is afraid of fucking up her job. Ashley knows and encourages her to go for it, but Celine ends up spending the night before Ilos just sitting in the cockpit and talking with Joker.

ME 2 - look, Celine doesn’t MEAN to fall for her Turian bestie. but they’ve both been through a lot and he really *gets her* and no one makes her laugh like he does and uh oh what are these feelings doing here??? only now she’s with Cerberus and doesn’t care about being professional so why not go for it?

ME 3 - the funny thing about the Alliance putting her in house arrest is, it makes Celine not care even a little bit if anyone knows that Garrus is living in her cabin.

27. Do they have any pet peeves? Does the council count?

28. What about hyperfixations? What’s the topic that will get Shepard rolling no matter the person or place?

She lovesssss any kind of activity she can do with her hands, and always encourages other people to do these activities with her. During war she’s really only able to mod guns and work on her model ships, but post-ME3 she gets really into puzzles and Legos and knitting

29. How active is Shepard? Are they hitting the gym, playing sports, or do they prefer quieter downtime?

Celine goes to the gym out of necessity; her only true physical hobby is yoga. while she’s on the Normandy, she reads a lot and just spends time with her friends.

30. What will always make them laugh?

Celine’s a little bit of a thrill seeker - while everyone else was screaming in the back seat of the mako, she was giggling the entire time

31. Who can always make them laugh?

oh god, it would be faster to name the people who couldn’t. Celine is pretty quick to laugh and genuinely finds a lot of things funny.

32. What do they do when they have hit their limit angry, just incandescent with rage

she shuts down. just goes totally silent and retreats from other people. when it gets really bad, she smashes her model ships and then has to rebuild them.

33. What skills do they have that are a surprise to the people around them?

she can blow a perfect smoke ring, every time she tries

34. Got any tattoos?

in game, no. she just never had the time. but post-ME3? oh yeah, she goes nuts getting them. it’s one of the only things that lets her really feel like her body belongs to her.

35. Which companions have they lost? How do they cope with it?

Kaidan, Thane, Mordin, and Legion. They’re all hard on her, but she takes Thane’s death the worst. He was one of her best friends, and losing him takes her to a really dark place.

36. Do they like to style their hair, wear makeup and jewlery? How do they feel about getting dressed up?

She wears her hair braided during combat, to keep it out of the way, and doesn’t bother putting makeup on. During downtime though? Her hair is always down, and she usually wears at least a little bit of makeup. She loves to dress up and look pretty, and doing so reminds her of her mom.

37. Got any bad habits?

she can get so focused on things that she completely forgets to take care of herself - eventually EDI has to start informing other people on the ship how long it’s been since she’s slept or eaten, and they have to drag her to bed against her will

38. Does Shepard do any activities with the companions and crew during downtime?

she starts a book club during her time with Cerberus - it starts as a joke between her and Kasumi, but eventually catches on with like half of the squad. she keeps it up during ME3 and one of her very first messages to her friends when she wakes up post-Reaper War is that she’s earned making the next book pick

39. Do they keep around any sentimental items?

she wears a necklace that belonged to her mother in ME1. she loses it when she dies over Alchera, and in ME3 Garrus has a replica made for her

40. Does your Shepard actually like to collect model ships? If not, what do they display? yeah, she does. Joker teases her for it relentlessly, but he buys her a new one every chance he gets.

41. How is Shepard with a gun? What about hand to hand?

she’s DEADLY with a gun, but not as good with hand to hand. because of her biotics, she never really learned the subtleties of hand to hand combat

42. Favorite weapon? she’s her own favorite weapon

43. Which version of the Normandy do they like best? The SR2

44. Do they like to rotate out companions for quests? Who do they bring the most? oh yeah, she rotates people all of the time. part of it depends on what they’re doing, but she’s also very aware of who works best with each other. if she can, she’ll always bring Garrus - she just feels safer with him at her back - but she also isn’t afraid to have him stay behind if she thinks someone else would do better on the mission

45. Do they approve of curing the genophage? HELL YEAH, fuck the genophage.

46. Does Shepard allow the rachni to live in me1? she does! She knows what everyone believes about the rachni, but when she sees what the Queen has been through she knows that she wouldn’t be able to live with herself if she didn’t let her go

47. Does Shepard practice any kind of self-care? her model ships & reading, mostly. eventually, Thane teaches her how to meditate and once he does she does it almost every day.

48. What abilities do they rely on the most in a fight? her biotics, 10000 percent. she knows a weapon can always run out of ammo but doesn’t feel that away about herself. (she’s not very good at recognizing her own limits)

49. What is Shepard’s happy ending? What’s the dream that keeps em going?

she’s always wanted to live in a place long enough to get her own pets. after she starts dating Garrus, she fantasizes about the two of them picking out a cat or training a dog together.

50. Is your Shepard indoctrinated

Anyway yeah when Evelyn said “stop calling me Evelyn I am your mother” I choked up because yes the artificial distance you try to create by calling your mom by her first name the way you’re consciously trying to hurt her while at the same time very very obviously asking her to notice that something’s broken and you need her. I will never stop thinking about this movie.
