Going to muse on fandom and theater for a moment:

I do find the mutability of the concept of 'canon' for theatrical characters/productions/etc to be an interesting space, especially when it comes to the ways fans interact with the work

Like, the text (canon) of a theatrical production is the script/libretto....and that's it. That is what is Canon, and the information therein contained.

Which is great! Because it allows different productions to go for different takes on things, and for a wide variety of actors to get to inhabit the characters!

This means that, if it's not directly in the text (script/libretto/lyrics), anything's sort of up for grabs regarding character traits. Even personality traits are, in many ways, up to the performer. Do they speak loud, quiet, faster, gesture a lot, etc? Up to the performer

Now, regarding fandom, it makes sense that when certain iconic actors/productions get associated with the characters, it becomes tempting to talk about such things as if they are text-level canon. After all, movies/TV/other visual media all contain the canon in what you can actually see.

As you could maybe guess, since it's this blog, we're going to talk about BMC

The totally rad thing about theater though, is you can find the canon character descriptions explicitly and succintly! Little things that get incorporated via the text can add flavor, but it demonstrates that things stay pretty wide-open. Let's take our lad Jeremy Heere:

"Awkward high school junior."

From the official licensing cast list by Concord Theatricals, that's what we get. All of it, the whole thing. If we incorporate what else we get from the text, we have "had a bar mitzvah" "wears Converse" "sweats alot" "has acne."

There's SO MUCH left out there! And that's wonderful, because you know how many millions of types of actor can inhabit and play with that short list? Exactly!

The only character with any specific physical detail in the cast list is that Rich is 5'5"

So this is to say, on some level, that while it can be tempting to conflate characteristics of actors as if they were canonical details of the characters themselves, that's kind of not the case, and that's by design. BMC is kind of appealingly open-ended like that, and theater in general by extension.
