Weekend Top Ten #579
Top Ten Lonely Island Songs
I’ve always been a fan of a good comedy song. Generally speaking I’ve always been out of touch with the musical zeitgeist; never knew what was supposed to be cool or uncool, and even when I did like a song chances are I didn’t know who sang it – or if I did, I didn’t know when or what album or whatever else they might have sung. However, if I heard a funny song, that would stick in my mind; instead of washing over me or just being interesting, it’d lodge in my brain on repeat and quite often be the gateway to becoming a big fan of the comedy artist in question.
Which brings us to The Lonely Island.
Like most people familiar with the band, I first discovered them through Saturday Night Live. Although we can’t really watch it over here in the UK, so many of their skits and songs that featured in the show became YouTube sensations back in the neolithic days of that all-conquering video smorgasbord. When I was at CITV, we’d regularly share funny videos around the office, and there are a couple here in this list that were office staples (not those kinds of office staples). And this is how I got to know who Andy Samberg is (alongside clips of his stoner-bro impression of Mark Zuckerberg), so that his appearances in movies became something I looked forward to, all the way up till Brooklyn Nine-Nine, one of my favourite sitcoms of all time.
So as we shared their funny songs with each other instead of writing continuity links for Pocoyo or logging clips of My Goldfish is Evil, I discovered more of their back catalogue, and my interest grew. But I’d say it exploded with the release of Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, a hilarious film that boasts some of the bands greatest songs. That’s when I really started to think about just how many cool songs these guys had made, how funny they were, and how smart and complex they were in the way they parodied different musical genres or specific songs. In a manner similar to Weird Al, as the band has gone on they’ve tackled a variety of subjects with great aplomb, to the point where some of their parodies actually work as “for-real” songs – just, y’know with jokes. And probably this is most evident in the Popstar soundtrack; maybe it’s all that palling around with Justin Timberlake, but the Lonely Island fellas are very good at doing a boyband.
Anyway. I like them! And they’re good at making films too – right up to last year’s Chip ‘n’ Dale. And I think their sensibilities carry over so much from their music to their comedy to their movies, even in things like Palm Springs, Nine-Nine, and the animated movies they’ve been a part of (more on which a bit later…). So let’s don our turtlenecks, cut a hole in a box, and get our arms T-Rexing, as we celebrate the best ever Lonely Island songs as decided by me.
Tumblr media
Spring Break Anthem (2013): like most of their songs that I love, it starts by just being funny; the OTT celebration of riotous and disturbing spring break behaviour is, well, very funny, made moreso by the music video that seems to rope in an entire break’s worth of teenagers to contribute. However it’s the juxtaposition of the ludicrous, misogynistic alpha-male macho posturing against the placid and romantic scenes of same-sex marriage that flips it up into art. It's like there’s a commentary being made about how the worst kinds of discriminatory excess can hide hidden truths about the person being offensive; here, it makes the “hetero” activities seem like extravagant gestures coming from a place of denial or even self-loathing. The tender scenes of the Lonely Island trio planning their weddings – with celebrity grooms including Ed Norton, for Pete’s sake – are superbly done. The lyrics are fantastic: “two kings walking hand in hand”. Marry a man.
Finest Girl (2016): coming from the soundtrack to Popstar, this sees Samberg in character as Conner4real, singing a romantic pop song about the finest girl he ever met in his whole life, who turned out to be a freak when she started talking. And then it just gets weird. There’s no two ways about it, it’s a surreal one, comparing – well – the act of love-making to the execution of a terrorist. There’s a pleasing comic sense of schadenfreude and celebration with the chorus’ repeated refrains of (ahem) “Fuck Bin Laden”, but it’s the other lyrics – using the imagery of covert ops to describe sex – that are most funny, especially the lines “she said ‘invade my cave with your special unit’/I said he wasn’t in a cave but there was no stopping”. Look, it’s crude and it’s silly but it’s just weird and daft and genius too.
Natalie’s Rap (2006) and Natalie’s Rap 2.0 (2018): Natalie’s Rap might have been my intro to The Lonely Island. Like a lot of comedy songs, it really hangs on one simple but humorous conceit: in this case that seemingly straight-laced actor Natalie Portman – all serious roles, humanitarian causes, and prestigious universities – was in fact a sex-crazed drug addict spouting foul-mouthed angry hip-hop. And it’s a conceit so funny it worked twice. A large part – basically, like, all the parts – of its success is Portman’s full-bodied commitment to the role, tossing off grotesque obscenities and – in the videos – just throwing stuff around. And, of course, the lyrics themselves are really funny; there’s a purity to the first video (I just couldn’t separate them) but I think the wordplay is funnier second time round, with more specific references to things like Black Swan and Portman’s marriage, as well as an absolutely inspired and disturbing Star Wars sequence.
Like a Boss (2009): another one that rose high for me when I worked at CITV, and so was an early introduction into the band and their wider oeuvre. And the appeal of this one is very simple: the heavy refrain (“Like a boss”) is funny in and of itself, but then the lyrics become increasingly surreal to the point of outright derangement, all of this apparently taking place within the confines of some kind of job appraisal. But the randomness of some of the lyrics – “find a giant fish/fuck its brains out” – is to be applauded; it’s just a really silly, funny little song. And apparently it’s a parody? I dunno. But I guess that would make the Bosch ad campaign a little more understandable.
Jack Sparrow (2011): once more we have a song that benefits from a humorous juxtaposition, as Michael Bolton provides smooth accompaniment to a crude hip hop track about picking up girls. But, like quite a few of their songs, it goes super-surreal as Bolton just croons a bunch of film references. The call-and-response nature of the lyrics – “okay that was kinda weird but we’re back in the club” – provides a lot of laughs, but it’s Bolton’s very game insertion into typical Island craziness that excels, whether it’s dressing up as Erin Brockovich or singing crude lyrics from Scarface.
Dick in a Box (2006): in a way the song that seemed to start it all, an SNL skit – the first to co-star Timberlake – that’s a mid-noughties pop ballad about love and romance, all centred knobs in parcels. The obvious comedy is derived from presenting such a thing as a sweet romantic gesture, but the song – and video – gives so much more. Timberlake is incredibly game – as he is in all his contributions with Lonely Island, including sweeping the floors in Jizz in My Pants – and the scenes of him and Samberg dancing with Christmas presents strapped to their nethers is a comic joy. It builds so well, climaxing in all the places you can experience a box/penis interface (“over at your parents’ house”, “midday at the grocery store”) but what I think everyone who hears it loves the most is the instructions: “One: cut a hole in a box”.
Diaper Money (2013): contrasting the rough hip hop braggadocio style with something that seems culturally at the other end of the spectrum is a comic stock in trade – here the guys are angrily rapping, boasting about their success, but the things they extol are rather mundane. However, what floats my boat, is it’s a particularly middle-class, early-middle-age kind of boastfulness, about marriage and fatherhood. And, really, the very concept of “diaper money” is quite funny to me.
Jizz in My Pants (2008): most of the Island songs are some flavour of hip hop, R&B, or pop, but here they spoof an entire other genre. Really, this is their take on the Pet Shop Boys, and it’s really well done; fast staccato delivery, urban imagery, and a good fist of their accents to boot. And then, yes, there’s the song’s subject matter and lyrics, the rapid-fire wordplay leading up to a series of hilarious climaxes. The middle eight, running through a series of insane scenarios that produce the titular effect, is a comic gem; “When Bruce Willis was dead at the end of Sixth Sense…” The only real negative I can think of is that as a PSB spoof it’s not quite as good as Inner City Pressure.
Motherlover (2009): another of a trilogy of videos featuring Samberg and Timberlake as a weird early-noughties pop duo, I love the call and response lyrics here as they discuss their odd little plan, so fabulously icky and uncomfortable as they sing frankly about their mums and the “switcheroo”. It’s creepy and demented – “I’m pushing that lady where you came out as a baby” – and it gets worse as the song goes on. Worth highlighting the supremely game Susan Sarandon and Patricia Clarkson as the mothers who, er, get loved.
Equal Rights (2016): another terrific turn by Conner4real, duetting with Pink in a song about homophobia and oppression and, well, equal rights. It’s a great parody of incurious celebrities latching on to progressive topics in a cynical manner, exemplified here in Conner’s frequent assertions that despite singing about gay rights he’s “not gay”; a thread that grows until it takes over the entire song in a list of supposedly macho and heterosexual things (“hot wings!”). And hey, if girls wanna have sex with him just cause he said this, so be it!
So there’s one song that could have been on this list I guess – Everything is Awesome. But they only co-wrote and appear on the track, so I’ve decided it – and the other Lego Movie songs they contributed to – don’t really count as fully-fledged Lonely Island numbers. But it’d be up there! For reals!
Also, if I’m doing bonus stuff, I really love their “Oscar song demo” that was scrapped by the Academy.

Chapter Twelve
The top five trends worldwide were of Larry Stylinson and Louis Tomlinson the very next day. Number one trend was "#LarryStylinsonIsForever", the second was "#LouisTomlinSONDATASS" with the videos the girls recorded from last night attached to it. The eight of them had danced their asses off with zero thoughts of their dignity for the next day. Louis was seen in all of them his ass and hips getting wilder the more he drank.
The third trend was "#PartyWithLouis" with the video of Louis drowning shots and high fiving the seven people group as well as yelling out the happy birthday song to the girl who was twenty now. The fourth trend was "#PartyWithLarry" with videos of Louis and videos of Harry from his birthday at a club attached to the posts.
Both lads taking shots in their respective videos and both lads having a good time with their friends. The final trend was of his shirt last night which said "Wine and Dildos" and Louis has never regretted buying a funny shirt until that moment. Even the "vanilla is for ice cream" shirt form Valentine's Day didn't draw as much attention as his shirt from last night was.
Louis sighed as he rolled out of bed to go downstairs where Liam, Zayn, and Niall were eating cereal at the counter.
"I hate every single one of you." Louis told them as he pulled down his coco pops
"Shut it cum stains." Zayn said around his toast making Louis glare at him
"Hey what's with the photos of Harry with that guy yesterday?" Liam asked
"His ex tried to get back with him but Harry shot him down. Nothing to worry about. It was just lunch." Louis said
"Just lunch? The guy was at his concert last night." Louis frowned and looked at Liam, "yeah there's photos of him in the crowd and a video of him going backstage after the show."
"Well I spoke with Harry before his show and he probably didn't know he'd be there them after we were sort of...distracted. Look I'm sure it looks bad-"
"Lou none of us is accusing Harry of anything, we all love him and don't think he'd cheat especially after getting to know the real him. I just thought I'd let you know the guy was there last night." Louis nodded pulling his phone out as he grabbed the milk from the fridge. He hesitated but pressed Harry's number feeling bad that it was only 6 in the morning in Brazil.
"Hey, Lou." Harry said answering almost immediately
"Hey what are you doing up so early?" Louis asked
"Watching the sunrise, thinking of you, writing, and eating fruit. Couldn't sleep after 5 so I got up to start the day." Harry said, "how's the hangover?"
"Horrible, but I'll live." Louis said putting Harry on speaker-phone to set it on the countertop as he stood beside Liam.
"Hey, Harry." The lads greeted
"Hey, guys. How was last night? Saw you made friends."
"Niall has a crush." Liam said
"Oh?"
"Shut up. It's nothing." Niall said shoving waffles into his mouth, "how was the concert?"
"It was fine. Had a girl try to get into my dressing room it was a weird night. I'm tired of South America already. Ready to leave." Harry said
"You sound exhausted. You okay?" Zayn asked
"I am. It was a long night. Management wants publicity around me for the UK leg and so they have brought my ex into the media with me without telling me. So now I'm being painted as a cheater over here even though I haven't done anything. Management gave him a ticket and a backstage passed yesterday without letting me know so now there's that going around the web. Then they have a room under his name in the same hotel I'm staying at. I'm probably going to stay in my tour bus or a different hotel tonight. Tonight is my last concert here so the rest is interviews and photoshoots but if this keeps up I'll leave early. Management and I have been arguing about it since last night." Harry explained
"Is there anything we can do?" Liam asked concerned
"Legally yeah, but honestly it's not worth it. As long as none of you have signed anything with Sony you're legally allowed to talk about anything. That doesn't mean you're safe to do so, however."
"What do you mean?" Louis asked
"If they know it's you then they can sue you for misinformation or slander. However, if you just happen to have an anonymous twitter or Tumblr account that can't be traced by to you by email or phone number and it must happen to tell the world about controlling managements. Well, they can't sue someone if they don't have their names." Harry said Louis looked at the boys who grinned
*************
Harry folded his arms sitting back in his seat frowning at his management team.
"Harry this will bring in a lot of publicity." Frank said, "We think it's for the best."
"Also we think Louis isn't the most...appropriate person to be associated with. The shirts, the jokes, the middle finger." Becca said as she spread out screenshots of Louis' tweets and pictures.
"Our point is Louis isn't someone to keep around when your music is for young girls ages 13 and up. That's your audience."
"It's not happening." Harry said shaking his head
"You signed a contract-"
"A contract you guys are going against." Harry argued glaring at them, "it's not going to happen."
"Yes, it will. You are expected at the beach tomorrow at noon for your date. That's final." Harry stormed out of the room slamming the door closed, he headed to the hotel and contacted his lawyer telling him what was going on. After his lawyer confirmed that it was against the contract Harry made his mind up and spent the next few hours talking to him.
*********
"Hey, lads how was work?" Louis asked walking into the house kicking off his shoes quickly. He frowned when silence met his question and was even more confused when he saw the lads sitting on the couch waiting for him. "What's going on?"
"Has Harry called yet?"
"What do you mean? Is it another stupid ex-boyfriend picture because I swear-"
"Harry's tour is canceled."
"What?" Louis asked stopping in his tracks, "is Harry okay?" Liam turned his laptop around and Louis stared at the picture of Harry with his bags and his eyes filled with tears with his head down as he walked through Manchester airport a few hours ago with the title,
HARRY STYLES CANCELS TOUR UNEXPECTEDLY!
LETS DOWN AND DISAPPOINTS MILLIONS OF FANS!
HARRY STYLES CAREER OVER?!
"What...why?" Louis asked immediately grabbing his phone and saw no missed calls or texts. Frowning he quickly called Harry putting him on speaker but got no answer. He tried two more times, but still no answer. "Alright, I'm going to go check his house. Make sure he's okay." Louis said getting up to pull his shoes back on
"Keep us updated." Liam said getting a nod from Louis who hurried out of the house and back into his car.
He had Harry's address and lock code for the time he had gone to his house to let in Harry's yard worker. Gemma usually did it, but or she had been asked to work so Harry had asked Louis to do it and to just stay there until he was finished. Louis had agreed and stayed there all Sunday watching Netflix on Harry's couch in his living room. Harry was on the other side of Manchester, but Louis didn't care as he out in the lock code watching the gate slide open letting him inside. He got out of his car and headed to the door glad to find it unlocked when he tested the handle.
Closing the door behind him, he ran up the stairs and headed to Harry's room opening the door gently and saw Harry laying on the bed. He walked inside the room and closed the door as he took his shoes off then headed to the bed. Louis sat on the side looking at Harry who had fallen asleep crying according to the tear tracks. He reached his hand out and gently pulled his hair away from his face and ran his fingers through it.
"Harry." Louis spoke soft and gentle, "Haz." Harry slowly opened his eyes and Louis smiled, "what are you doing here Haz? What's wrong? What happened?" Louis asked a few minutes later after he was sure Harry was awake
"Does everyone hate me?"
"The tabloids are having a field day, but I don't think your fans are as angry as you fear. Want me to look?" Harry nodded so Louis pulled his phone out and got on Instagram to see what is going on there and saw the picture of Harry at the airport going around. Each post was of support and wishing everything was okay, "nobody hates you, sweetie. Now, what's wrong?"
"They wanted me to cheat on you on a fucking beach in fucking Brazil. I told them no and they said some shit them by the end of it they told I was going to do it and they were the end of it. I walked out and I called my lawyer and he told me it was against the contract so I packed up and I left on the jet. Canceled the tour on the jet." Harry said, "they went against the contract they made up so unless they want to take it to court it'll be a simple case of getting ownership of my songs and making them refund the last ten concerts. So unless they want what they tried to do out in the open them it'll be over within a few weeks."
"Baby you could have called me and told me the situation. I'd of understood." Louis said gently
"No, you don't get it. First, it'd be cheating then they'd make it impossible for us to talk, then we'd break up and make me into the victim somehow and push hate on to you. They'll ruin your life and besides, I don't cheat. I'd never do that to you no matter who wanted me to do it. Can you just cuddle me?"
"Of course. Scoot over." Louis set his phone and keys beside Harry's phone and laid down beside him snuggling his head against his chest. "I love you."
"I love you too." Harry said

not your average night
collection of writing
just to make this clear as otherwise, it might be a bit confusing- this is set in 1920′s during the prohibition. I’m aware there was not a prohibition in the UK, so interpret it how you want. there is a lot of slang used that I believe is predominantly American. but I’ve been wanting to do something like this for ages and am pleased with how it worked out!
(also I might as well include translations for some of the words that are less than obvious to figure out to save confusion- also they may not be 100% accurate but all the words came from one website so good as we going to get!)
bluenose: killjoy  Mrs Grundy: uptight  hotsy totsy: attractive/ pleasing to the eye  don’t take any wooden nickels: don’t do anything dumb  eggs: wealthy people with extravagant lifestyles  zozzled: shitfaced  Oliver Twist: extremely good dancer   Iron my shoelaces: be excused  Four-flusher: gold digger  handcuffed: engagement ring  dewdropper: wallflower  ossified: drunk  jake: okay/fine  gasper: cigarette  Sheba: sexually desired woman  wurp: buzzkill
All I could hear was the roaring jazz play from inside, the place where secrets were kept hidden whilst the sun slept along with most of the city. But, there were those invited along, or in my case had many connections to events like these.
“You sure it’s sl’right?” I grab onto my brother's arm, causing him to turn and face me. He smiles softly, fixing my diamond headband into its place and brought my curls forward, framing my face.
He glances behind him and I watch as girls in flapper dressers of golds, blacks and silvers walk by, a fur wrap around their arms as their small heels click almost in sync along the pavement to the descending staircase. “Why wouldn’t it be? Stop being such a bluenose.” I scoffed at his response and punched his arm lightly.
“I’m no bluenose! I’ll show you.” Walking ahead of him I straighten my dress as the frills sway around my knees and wear a small, but inviting smile on my face. Ought to show him, calling me a bluenose that Mrs Grundy.
Walking down the stairs I can hear him calling my name, but I focus solely on the music as it fills my ear. The sax that blends with the trumpet and the occasional piano. My feet can’t move quick enough as two large men stand either side of the doors. “Aren’t you a hotsy tosty.” One of the guards speaks up, and I laugh it off as they open the door.
“Bet you say that to all the ladies.” I wink at him and he pulls on his suspenders, making them snap against his large chest. Another man inside pulls back the beaded doorway and I politely nod, unaware of the sight before me and how vast it could be compared to what I had pictured.
Before me down the entrance was a large stage where the band performed, all in white suits and red bowties playing their instruments as a ground danced below. Yet in centre stage was a microphone, vacant of a singer leaving the gold curtain backdrop exposed. “Where is the performer?” I turn to ask my brother, sensing his presence to my left.
He links my arm with his as we walk down into the crowd and I look around, allowing myself to take in my surroundings. To our left is a wall long length bar, nearly every set is occupied as I see various bottles being lifted from behind on the glass shelves. My eyes follow the bartenders who mix various liquids and shake them before pouring it with grace into the glasses. “You wouldn’t even know it were the prohibition here.” I joke to my brother and he manages to crack a smile.
“I’m going to get a drink, want one?” Nodding in response his arm slips from mine, “Don’t take any wooden nickels!” I roll my eyes at his remark, what bad can I cause by standing on the spot? Glancing to my right to see a series of red velvet booths with gold lining the fabric with wooden tables in the centre.
In one booth, rather blatantly sit six eggs. You could sniff ‘em from a mile off based on their choice of suits and their suit vests that match their jackets and trousers along with their hats as they smoke. Clouds of grey disguise their faces and I turn away, not wanting to be caught staring and giving off the wrong impression.
“Wanna dance?” Someone places their hand on my forearm and I turn around to face them, assuming it were my brother with one drink in his hand from having drunk his at the bar. He’s always eager, coming home from these places completely zozzled.
Facing the stranger I was pleasantly surprised, and without a second to spare I pulled his arms towards mine and backed into the crowd of couples dancing. As we begin to dance the music becomes more lively, “Time to Charleston.” He laughs and everyone positions themselves and we all dance in sync.
Watching the stranger dance he moves his feet with some agility but lacks the finesse I see others perform with. We join hands and dance together, and now I get a better glimpse of the stranger. Bright brown eyes and blonde hair with one of those suits on from earlier. “I mean you aren’t much of an Oliver Twist I’ll say.” I half-joked, wanting to dance with someone else as my dress’ frills swing from side to side, never remaining still.
Looking around as we danced I saw a young gentleman sat at the bar, watching the crowd dance. Unlike this egg, he seemed less dapper in deep blue trousers as opposed to black with a creased suit shirt and suspenders. Watching him eye the crowd I saw him take his glasses out, covering more of his face and I smile towards him, hoping for this stranger to avail me of this situation.
Zoning out from my dancer's chatter I laugh along, smiling to him as we dance all the whilst trying to gain the attention of the cat. “Excuse me, I just gotta iron my shoelaces.” The egg pardons me and I walk off slowly, slightly more sultry and in the fashion of a woman as opposed to the child my brother deems me as being.
Once the man is out of sight I find a vacant spot, conveniently next to the onlooker at the bar and order myself a drink. As it is presented before me I take a swig, feeling the burn slowly crawl down my throat and I resist the urge to cough forcefully as I wipe my mouth with the white silk gloves. “That’s a pretty dress you got on.” Placing my glass down I shift my focus to the gentleman next to me.
“Never worn it before, got it for tonight.” I tell him as we both look in different directions. He observes the dancing and I focus on my drink, not wanting to risk ending up zozzled like my brother on my first night out since the prohibition. “Do you dance? Or just watch everyone?”
I can see his feet bounce along to the beat of the music, “I can’t dance, no Oliver Twist like those guys.” He motions to the dancers who dominate the floor, the girls twirl and the frills of their dressers fly exposing their thighs for the short while as they laugh giddily.
“So you come for the drink?” Looking down a drop of whiskey fills his glass. “Or perhaps the music?” This time I see his eyebrow rise and he turns around, his knees clumsily knock mine.
Getting a better look at him I smile, behind his glasses he has warm blue eyes that wear hardship in his gaze. His jaw is lined with stubble and some marks of dirt whilst he continuously brushes his dark brown hair out of his face as it hangs down. “Don’t get a lotta music like this at the docks. Nights like these, take every chance to listen along.” He picks up his glass, taking the last sip before sighing as he places it down. No sooner is it cleared and replaced. “Gotta name doll?”
“Might do, how ‘bout yourself?” I ask as I sip my own drink and one side of his lips rise, a half smile forming playfully.
“Name’s Dan.” He picks up my hand, kissing my glove lightly and I chuckle at the action. “Not a lotta guys do that? You used to eggs I suppose.”
I shake my head, “Far from it. Don’t mix with what you aren’t worth.” Words my Mother always battered into me. “I keep on finding upstage guys, once a four-flusher who my brother highly disagreed of.” Thinking back I remember how my brother forced him out of the house as he eyed up our decor rather than me. “Short-lived relationship, no handcuff which I expected it’d end with.”
“So, you aren’t engaged? Single then?” He straightens up, a smile now being displayed.
“Do you see a handcuff on my finger?” Slipping my glove off he picks it up, his nails slightly dirty, but I don’t mind. He’s different from the guys I meet on my way to see my brother at work. He hasn’t thrown himself at me or called me names, he’s just sat here like a dewdropper. “There you go then.” I remark and take my own hand back, placing my gloves in my bag.
Whilst he stares at me with a smile I tell him my name before I take another more confident sip at my drink. “You gotta beautiful name.” He huffs and I smile in response. “So, what brings you here?”
“I wanted to come out, heard all about these places from my brother. Got a dress, used my Mum’s headband and here I am.” Motioning to myself I chink my drink to his, feeling less constricted and more free with him. “So, any of your dockers with you tonight?”
He begins to look around, pointing three others out to me as they remain dotted around the club. “We’re pretty tight, grew up with those guys. They’re always complaining ‘bout me, I wanted to sing you see.”
“So why don’t you? Ain’t too late to try.” He shakes his head in disagreement.
“See me?” He stands up, motioning to his attire and pulls on his suspenders and lack of tie. “I don’t fit the part. Can’t ‘ford such a thing anyway.”
Sighing in disappointment he turns around, back to face the bar whilst I stare aimlessly at the stage. Something clicks and I lightly smack his arm, “Dan, you, you should sing!” My eyes wide with excitement he laughs it off.
“Yeah, you sure are ossified.” He comments and returns to drinking.
“No, come on.” I stand up, a light buzz running through me as we make our way through the crowd and I approached the sax player. “How’re you doing handsome?” Working with what I’ve got Dan stands behind me, allowing me to take lead. The saxist glances down, clearly eyeing my attire I turn to face Dan. “We’re dancing, right now.” Taking his hands we begin to move, him with less ease but I focus on the saxist.
“What’re you after toots?” I move closer to the stage until we are next to it.
Pushing my hair out of my face I twirl one of the ends, “My friend here is a singer. And I’ve noticed your lacking one tonight. Come on, give him a chance?” I bat my eyes to him, knowing it’s one way to swoon a fella.
He rubs his lips together and Dan remains silent. The saxist turns around and Dan holds my waist, spinning me into him and I rest my hands on his chest. “What’re you doing? I can’t perform in front of all these people.” I can hear the fear mixed with the haziness.
“All they want is something to dance to, they’re not gonna focus on you that much. Everything’ll be jake.” I try to convince him, but worry swarms his blue eyes.
“Miss?” Glancing up the saxist motions to the mic. “Ready for ’im.” I face Dan and give a supportive smile.
“You got this.” I tell him, and I can see a spark grow from eye to eye.
The music continues to play and he tightens his grip on my waist, bringing me closer. He lightly kisses me before walking away onto the stage, standing in front of the mic with his eyes up, focusing on the entrance.
I laugh at what has just happened but remain slightly stunned. Touching my lips I can feel the roughness of a dockyard worker, the lust and desire he held in his kiss. He exchanges a few words with the musicians, and they begin to play another upbeat song. His hands grip the mic stand and he begins to move his feet. Around us everyone continues to dance, no one completely aware of the vacant spot being filled.
My eyes remain on him, and he glances down with a smirk on his face as he begins to sing. In that moment, it all comes to life. The entire room is ecstatic with life like a wildfire as the dancing becomes more excitable, the music has more thrill to it and I even see those in the booths nod to the stage.
As I dance along I feel a tug on my arm, and I start to be pulled out of the crowd and away from Dan. I watch his eyes follow but he can’t stop singing now, it’s his chance. Pulling away I see my brother and sigh loudly. “Really, now?!” I groan angrily to him and try to release his grip on my arm. “I know the guy on stage, I was getting along with him.”
My brother half laughs, “I know what getting along is with you. You think I’m going to allow that under my nose tonight?”
“It weren’t like that tonight!” Walking up the stairs we exit the club, the bitter chill hanging outside as I can feel the life draining from the music the further away we get.
Standing still with my arms crossed he begins to smoke, “Wanna gasper?” I shake my head as he continues to smoke and I simply pay attention to the music in the background. “I know you think I’m being harsh,” I scoff at his comment, but he continues needlessly. “but to him, I know you’re just a Sheba. You’ll have your fun tonight and then he’ll go back to his home in some alleyway an’ never see you again.” He takes a long puff and blows it to the left of us, “I’m just looking out for you, doll.”
“No.” I state and he removes his gasper from his lips. “You aren’t. I’m not a little girl anymore you can boss around. If I met some egg and introduced you, I bet you’d be happy. But because I met some fella who works in the docks and has dreams I’m not allowed to see him?” He remains silent, and I begin to walk away.
My brother angrily calls my name, “Don’t you walk away from me!” He yells and I stop.
Turning to face him he throws the fag on the ground, crunching it beneath his foot. “Dan has more of a personality, a sense of humour and bigger dreams than any egg I could meet. Earlier I danced with one and he was lifeless like a dewdropper so stop being a wurp and let me have fun.”
He sighs in defeat and I turn around. As I lift my eyes Dan stands there, the music continuing to play inside but he’s here. “So, I’m better than some egg, eh?” A smile forms on his face as he keeps his hands in his pockets, his sleeves now rolled up exposing more dirt on his arms.
Walking towards him I wrap my arms around his neck and kiss him, this time I can taste the whiskey on his lips and savour it. Pulling away I smile, “Now we’re even. And you owe me a dance.”
He takes my hand in his and we head back down the stairs, back to where the life and fun are held. The music returns to my ears happily along with the warmth and excitement of tonight.

How much would car insurance cost for a 17 year old girl?
Right, I'm 17. I getting my provisional licence in the next week or so, so I can start my driving lessons. When and if I pass my theory and practical, I would like to get my own car. I have a rough idea of which car I would like to get, but have no idea what I can do to get a rough idea on insurance. I've tried looking at a few websites and they're all useless haha. I'd love to have a Peugeot 106. Not the best car I know, but it would be suitable for me. I live in an area with off road parking, so this could possibly bring the insurance down a little. If someone can give a rough quote themselves, it'd be much appreciated and I can begin to plan ahead.""

Home insurance wants to raise dwelling coverege?
I purchased a townhome in March of 2013 for $183k in Florida. It is in a 200-unit subdivision that just completed all construction and sold out all last remaining units a few months ago. When I signed up for home insurance, the insurance company set my dwelling coverage to $183k. I told them that it isn't accurate for them to base dwelling coverage on market price because the replacement cost must be lower since market price includes land and profits the builder makes. Long story short, they convinced me to stay at $183 because they said costs were rising and so forth. I decided not to fight it. Fast forward to this year, and now they are proposing to increase the dwelling coverage to $203k (11% increase). Funny thing is that for my exact townhome model, about 20 units were sold in the last year with prices averaging in the upper $180s (slightly above what I paid). I called the insurance company to let them have a piece of my mind, and they told me they use an independent 3rd party company to price the replacement costs. I told them it's BS because it's way above average market price and replacement costs is always below market price. They asked me to send them documents from when I purchased the home that details the construction materials used and upgrades so that they can reevaluate the dwelling coverage. My question is, why is the burden of proof on me to prove to the insurance company that dwelling coverage should be lowered? Why can't they just reduce it to what I tell them to reduce it to? After all, I am the customer who pays for the insurance. If my house is ever destroyed and I underinsured, that's my problem not theirs. I just find it strange that I'm paying for an insurance service and the insurance company decides what the replacement cost is, not me. Even though it doesn't affect them.""

Am I still on my parents' insurance now that I'm a part-time student?
I was wondering if I am still eligible for insurance (Blue Cross Blue Shield of Mississippi) even though I am a part-time student? I ask this because my step-father asked for confirmation that I'm a full-time student (I guess he didn't know I was only part time) and I was like..I'm not full-time anymore! I have a doctors appointment tomorrow. How convenient. I researched online and apparently under the Affordable Care Act I am still eligible. But if I'm still eligible, why is BCBS still asking for confirmation? I looked at the BCBS of Mississippi site but I couldn't find anything. I'm so confused and I cannot afford to lose this insurance! Thanks for any help guys..""

How do I purchase life insurance?
I'd like to purchase a life insurance policy, but have no financial savvy past Google. How do I go about this? What are the pitfalls? Do I need an agent? Any recommended companies? (It would have to be rated at least A- or better by A.M. Best). I'm a twenty-one year old unmarried non-smoking student. I'm in good physical health, though there's some family history of heart disease. No dangerous activities. (It must look odd for me to be checking into this at my age. It's a long story, but rest assured I don't plan on dying anytime soon.) I'd like an affordable policy with a payout of 105,000$ or a little over. Simplicity and good customer service would be nice of course. I'm pretty busy with school as it is. Finally: term or whole? I understand most people think term is the way to go, but considering my youth and good health would I be better off with something permanent? I know I'm going to want to be insured until my eventual (assumedly far-off) demise. Thanks for your time.""

Long-term care insurance with pre-existing conditions?
My grandfather, who is 72 years old, needs round-the-clock care that has now exceeded our capabilities. He suffers from pre-existing bad to severe dementia. He's suspicious, falls frequently, very forgetful, suffers from sundowning. He just doesn't know what to do and he even struggles with basic life functions. He also suffers from lymphatic cancer that metastasized to his lung and chest cavity, as well as squamous cell carcinoma that is very resistant to all his previous treatment and has spread to open wounds on his arm. Because all of his lymph nodes were removed, his lymphatic fluid constantly pools in that arm and swells to hugely abnormal size. Therefore he has to wear a sleeve to keep it in place, which is painful for him to put on and is time-consuming for his caregiver. He also is supposed to keep his arm elevated, but refuses because of his dementia. He is mean and hateful at times and insists that we are trying to kill him and is always demanding that his caregiver (my aging and stressed grandmother) remain at his side at all times, or he grows suspicious about her fidelity. He has hallucinations. We moved in with them to help her take care of him, but my school work (homeschooled, mainly to take care of them) and my mother's commute to work have also taken a toll on us. We hated to think about it, but we finally resolved that he belongs as a permanent resident in a home. The biggest problem is the astronomical cost which we can't just chip together , as it was never there in the first place. We did research on nursing home coverage and found out about long term care coverage. We found out some basic things like it is best to purchase at a young age. Unfortunately, my grandmother was never educated on insurance and doesn't possess significant life insurance nor anything like long-term care, and he doesn't qualify for the little help Medicaid offers. Although he suffers from cancer, he has reached the end of his treatment. His cancer was too resistant to all prospective radiation and chemotherapy, and the anti-body treatment that he tried, he had a massive allergic reaction to. He has awful pain all the time and is on a rotated regimen of extra strength ibeproufen and high dosage morphine, with a high grade fentanyl pain patch. So, although cancer plays a part in his insurance qualification in name, apart from being administered his medication and sleeve, his cancer is not the main concern as far as his care/treatment goes. We have had to accept that he is going to die sooner or later and are trying to find the best final preparations. Bentonite clay seems to be drawing out some of the side effects of his radiation (after which his cancer got worse), and so may prolong his life. The short prognosis was 2-9 months. His dementia have become exhausting and endless. There's simply nothing we can do anymore. He's on prescription for Aricept for the dementia and we give him melatonin for the sundowning, which seems to have a calming effect. Sorry for the long piece, but we're all very distressed about this and I felt that I had to give a thorough explanation of his ailments and treatment. Our needs are a long-term stay in a nursing home facility covering skilled care for his dementia, activities of daily living, ect. We also hope that he can be treated with respect and dignity. We need affordable prices like anyone else in the middle class, not astronomical rates. We also need a policy that would either cover pre-existing without penalizing for it or not asking health questions, ect., as my grandfather is obviously in need of care we can't offer him. The only policy we have even brushed upon is Physicians Mutual. We don't know anything about it really, and we don't know where to look for anything else. Everything seems to lead to a dead end online when we need a solution. Any help is greatly appreciated.""

Im 22 and I have a terrible credit score. I am looking to insure my car by myself which has always been insured by other people like my parents/boyfriends mom etc. I know my credit score is my own fault but I have been running into difficulties trying to find a decent car insurer for my vehicle. Does anyone know a place that will offer car insurance even though I have poor credit? I know I will pay a lot more than if I had a good credit score but I am in dire need of insurance and am willing to pay a bit more than usual. Alot of places have even denied me car insurance because of the my credit score so If anyone knows a place (not geico, progessive, unitrin or allstate) that will be helpful and will possibly insure me, can u please let me know:-) Oh yeah Im residing in NJ, if thats helpful!""

Can the government require you to buy insurance?
In listening to the Supreme Court arguments about Obamacare a question keeps coming to mind. The major arguing point seems to be: Can the government constitutionally require people to buy health insurance? If the answer turns out to be no, does that mean the government can not require you any insurance? Like car insurance? Don't use the argument that driving is a privilege, not a right. There is ample judicial precedence that says owning a car & driving is, in fact, a right in the U.S. It certainly is necessary to get hired.""

Gateway Indie
Tumblr media
On May 20th of 2008, my musical taste changed forever. We (or at least I) tend to discover things in waves. Specifically waves of increasingly-tiered obsession that escalate until I can focus on one thing and one thing only. I’ll find a song I really like, devour the album that it came from, read everything on the band’s Wikipedia page, explore their discography, listen to side projects, see them live, spend exorbitant amounts of money on limited edition vinyl, then (apparently) write about my experience years later.
One of the most important steps in my particular brand of hyper-obsessive fandom is delving deeper into the genre of the band who I’ve recently discovered. Whether it’s simply to contextualize their sound, see if I recognize any of their contemporaries, or just to get a better understanding of the world’s musical history. When one artist’s discography isn’t enough, sometimes the next logical step is to start absorbing everything in their immediate vicinity. It’s a beautiful notion that one album can open the door to a whole new world of music that was previously hidden. It’s how you diversify as a music listener and as a person.
Up until high school, I’d really only explored the genres of classic rock, grunge, and some metal. All pretty standard stuff, especially for a white suburban teen, but it was all music that came out before I was born. In 2008 I discovered a group of albums that opened my eyes to the ever-cool world of indie and, more importantly, paved the way for my interest in both the genre and the contemporary music scene as a whole. As each of these albums near their 10th anniversary I realized that not only have many of them achieved “classic” status within the genre, they were also part of a larger movement for my generation.
Universality
Now that the internet has paved the way for services like iTunes, Spotify, Soundcloud, and Bandcamp, music has become more insular than ever. In 2017 there are entire sects of fans who can be hyper-devoted to one artist or scene that may never intersect with anyone else. Additionally, with the rise of social platforms like forums, Twitter, and reddit fans can live in a bubble… and while it’s great to connect with other fans, it also means the vocal obsessives are more walled-off.
We have fewer “universals” than ever before. Ed Sheeran is one of the best-selling artists in the world right now, but I don’t think I’ve heard a single song of his. Drake is breaking records every week, but if you don’t care about hip-hop, he’s pretty easy to avoid listening to. It’s a byproduct of the ever-splintering media landscape that we’re living in.
So there are positives and negatives, but this splintering is relevant because those “universals” will become fewer and far between as we move forward. Looking beyond music, you have shows like Game of Thrones which is one of the most technically popular and most-talked about shows currently on TV. It consistently shatters its own self-set viewership records, numbers which are worth screaming about in 2017, yet would have gotten a show canceled even 20 years ago. There’s just more to watch, more to do, and more to care about in 2017, so if you don’t want to watch Game of Thrones, you truly don’t have to. This isn’t the 20’s where everyone gathers around the radio for the day’s episode of Little Orphan Annie. I feel like I’m getting off track, but music is this phenomenon multiplied by thousands. Not only are there dozens of alternatives mediums vying for your attention, practically anyone can create music in 2017. There are more alternatives (and therefore fewer commonalities) than ever before.
I feel like we will reach (or perhaps have already hit) a point where there are simply no more universal artists. There’s never going to be another Beatles. Obviously. But looking purely at The Beatles on a scale purely based on audience and cultural impact, there will never be another musical group in the history of the world that reaches the omniscient presence that the Beatles achieved. There were fewer artists to listen to then, fewer ways to create music, and even fewer avenues to discover new music.
As technology has improved, we’ve seen a direct impact on the music industry as an entity. At the same time, we’ve also seen artists effectively harness this power. Groups like Odd Future were pervasive and forward-thinking enough that I (a high school-aged non-hip-hop listener) knew who they were and knew at least a few of their songs. While everyone’s musical journey is a unique story filled with personal discoveries that have influenced their taste, this is really a story about the first universal that I was a part of as it was happening.
I Miss the Old iTunes
Back when iTunes was still relatively new, it was my only source of current music. I would almost instantaneously drain any gift card I was given, using it to cross several songs off my carefully-curated iTunes wish list. I was also fortunate enough to have my Dad’s massive collection of nearly one thousand CD’s at my disposal, but as you could imagine, most of those albums were a decade old at least. That’s why I was a rock fan first: ease of access.
But I always found ways to satiate my hunger for new music. From VH1 to renting CDs one by one from the local library, there were only so many ways to hear new music, even in the mid-2000’s. One of the most unexpected avenues that I took advantage of was the (now sadly-defunct) iTunes Single of the Week Program, which offered exposure to countless contemporary acts one song at a time. It may not have been much, but this program turned me onto dozens of artists and sounds that I wouldn’t have heard otherwise. Through this mishmash of mid-2000’s media, I was able to satiate my budding hunger for new music as a penniless 14-year-old.
That brings us back to the first sentence of this post.
Unbeknownst to me, indie folk was blowing up In 2008. Bon Iver’s For Emma, Forever Ago was gaining serious traction a year after its release thanks to the album’s breakout hit “Skinny Love” and in May “Skinny Love” was put up as iTunes’ free song. As with most songs in the program, I’d never heard of the artist, nor had any experience with the genre, but I downloaded it anyway because that’s how hungry I was for new music.
I downloaded the track (no doubt on my family’s bulky oversized 2005 laptop) and synced it onto my iPod immediately. I was floored. I’d never heard anything so delicate. It was catchy (especially for a folk song) but it also had a soft warmth and reserved delivery that was a revelation to me at the time. “Skinny Love” evoked a feeling that was unlike any other music I’d ever heard. I had to have more.
Part of the beauty of the Single of the Week program was how random it was. One week it’d be an electropop song, the next it would be something folky like Bon Iver, and then it would be a latin song. I didn’t necessarily like it all (quite the opposite, in fact) but I listened to it all for the sake of discovery. The fact that these songs were free was just the icing on top of the cake. I had nothing to lose.
I had no idea at the time, but indie folk saw a massive explosion in popularity in 2008 with the rise of acts like Bon Iver and Fleet Foxes, who both released stunning debuts around this time. I didn’t realize that this era of indie had been such a widespread phenomenon until I saw people discussing Bon Iver’s For Emma, Forever Ago on its tenth anniversary calling it their “Gateway Indie” album. I liked that phrase, but I didn’t think much of it until I heard the ineffable deep_cuts youtube channel cite both For Emma and Fleet Foxes as “dominating adolescent MP3 players the world over” at this time. Maybe it was just his worldly UK accent, but something clicked for me. I realized this was not only a formative album, era, and sound for myself, but for everyone my age.
Beyond Folk
Later that year I met some of the coolest people in my high school. And by that I don’t mean cool in the traditional sense, they were dork-ass nerds like me, but they were dork-ass nerds with impeccable musical taste. At this point, the edgiest thing I had ever listened to was Nine Inch Nails, but these guys opened my mind to the larger world of indie music. Genres I didn’t even know existed. Sounds I could barely conceive of. This was 10th grade and the albums they showed me would go on to become some of my favorite and most formative of all time.
The first song I remember them playing for me was the opening track to Portugal. The Man’s first album Waiter: "You Vultures!" which was titled “How the Leopard Got Its Spots.” I’m going to stop there for a second just to point out this band/album/song combo was (before hearing the first note) already more experimental and out-there than anything else I’d ever heard up to that point.
“How the Leopard Got Its Spots” is a pokey unpredictable song that almost borders on prog. While Portugal. The Man changes up their sound every album, their debut is easily the most experimental of their discography, still retaining many characteristics of the band’s post-hard predecessor Anatomy of a Ghost. But I didn’t know any of that at the time. I just listened to the song, enraptured by the track’s grungy guitars that paired perfectly with Gourley’s shrill high-pitched singing. The lyrics were obtuse in a Relationship of Command-type way and the final glitched-out chorus haunted me for days after the fact, becoming an immovable earworm. I remember at the time Grand Theft Auto IV had just been released (God, take me back) and I’d spend hours tooling around the game’s gray city listening to this song on repeat for hours.
Sometime later, Eric (the one of the group who I was closest to) and I found ourselves sitting next to each other during a weirdly-placed mid-day homeroom period. I asked him what he was listening to and he said “I’ll show you” he handed me his headphones and hit play on his 3rd generation iPod Nano. What I heard were the first shimmering notes of Minus The Bear’s “Pachuca Sunrise.” The song’s carefully-times guitar taps and intensely-technical drumming provide the crunchy background for Jake Snyder’s laid-back sensual lyrics and Cory Murchy’s smooth flowing bassline. It gelled into a transformative experience that made my body feel warm with sunlight and love. There’s a reason it’s still one of the band’s most-played live songs even a decade later. It turns out “Pachuca Sunrise” was many people’s first Minus The Bear song and led countless fans to the group’s second album Menos El Oso.
At this point, I already had enough “material” to go off on my own and endlessly devour these two records from these two very different bands. And I did, but I was also hungry for more. I came back to this group of guys in our shared AV class and begged for more in the coolest way I could without discounting my own cred.
From there Eric, Oliver, and Max threw me into the deep end. They showed me “Death Rides a Horse” by instrumental band Russian Circles. I dug it. Ratcheting up the intensity, they moved onto “Laser Life” by the post-hardcore band Blood Brothers. I dug it. They then threw the hyperchaotic cybergrind “Chapels” by Genghis Tron at me. I didn’t dig it, but I warmed up to it pretty quickly.
While there were dozens of other acts and songs that these guys turned me onto over the course of the next year, this crop stands out in my mind both for its breadth and what they’ve gone on to represent for me personally.
Portugal. The Man would go onto become one of my favorite bands. I’ve often proselytized online that they have one of the best discographies in indie rock. I would also go on to expose this band to my two younger brothers, and for one of them, Portugal. The Man has become their favorite band of all time. They currently sit at my 8th most played band on Last.fm with just over 3,000 plays.
Minus the Bear was my favorite band for years. At 6 concerts they’re also far-and-away the band I’ve seen live the most, and two years ago I saw them play Menos El Oso in full for the album’s 10th-anniversary tour. The album’s closing track “This Ain't a Surfin’ Movie” has been my favorite song of all time since I first heard it. The band is currently my 6th most-listened band on Last.fm, and three of the band's albums are have made it onto my list of all-time favorites.
Russian Circles would eventually lead me to the world of post-rock and instrumental metal. Bands like Explosions in the Sky, Mogwai, and Earth, all of whom have served as my reading and studying music throughout high school and college. Russian Circles also have a nearly-perfect discography, and they currently sit at #15 on my Last.fm.
Meanwhile, Fleet Foxes were always a bit boring to me… until this year. Maybe I have more patience at 24 than I did at 15, but I’ve had their discography on repeat for this entire summer and I’ve been loving it.
Most importantly, Bon Iver served as my gateway to all of this. It’s weird that a slow quiet folk album could pave the way for something as discordant and brutal as Genghis Tron, but I guess it’s a snowball effect type of thing. For Emma, Forever Ago also became somewhat of a soundtrack for my first real relationship, and despite that relationship’s rocky conclusion a year later, I can still listen to the album today and enjoy it as much as I did the first time hearing it.
I can’t thank these three dudes (and the creators of these albums) enough. I can safely say that my life would be unequivocally and vastly different without having gone through this period of exploration when I did. I would be a different person with different tastes and interests entirely. Full stop. So for that, I can only say “thank you” and hope that I returned the favor with someone else somewhere down the line. Sometimes discoveries come from the most unexpected places. Sometimes a random song can lead you down a path you never could have blazed yourself. Sometimes a single song can change everything.
