the problem with the hunting dogs uniform
yes, i'm still upset about this. "but the studio didn't want any visual comparisons with the real life japanese imperial army!" but isn't that the point?
bungou stray dogs is supposed to be an allegory for japan after the second word war. "the great war" wasn't just a cool bit of world building. the buraiha trio, a group that challenged the pro-empire beliefs through their literature, were made important characters for a reason. the decay of angels, named after a pro-war and pro-empire author's works, are antagonists for a reason. the hunting dogs, a branch of the military, were introduced as antagonists for a reason.
"but that's a really sensitive topic! think of all the people who suffered because of japanese imperialism!" i'm filipino. i have living relatives that witnessed the horrors of japanese imperialism with their own eyes. do you know how hard it was to learn about my own people's recent history? all people think about when japan is brought up is anime. in fact, japan intentionally used stuff like anime to rebrand themselves and strengthen their soft power. ironically enough, this anime is actually making it even harder for people to actually consider the very thing bsd is supposed to be about. avoiding this topic helps no one.
idk maybe the change in the hunting dogs' colour scheme was a purely aesthetic decision. but i find it really ridiculous that people try to praise bones for caring so much about not wanting to offend people. they don't care about offending people; they're actually avoiding the difficult conversation kafka asagiri wants to have.
