Rating Star Trek TOS costumes because why not! (part 10)
Bread and Circuses (2x25). This is not what I had in mind when I fantasized about these three as gladiators. Still, grey does look nice on them (especially the good Doctor 👀) and I do appreciate any chance they get to show off their forearms. 6/10.
See, this is what they should've had Kirk, Spock and McCoy wearing. These are basically party city costumes but bonus points for the ridiculous shields and the stylishly asymmetrical arm coverings. 7/10.
Scratch that, this is what the boys should have worn. As always creative cut-outs = futuristic fashion as far as TOS is concerned, and as always I am a fan. The gold looks really nice on the actress, 8/10.
Assignment: Earth (2x26). Okay, so this is just a dude in a suit but consider this: kitty! 100/10 for the cat, she's so stylish in her little sparkly collar. Nothing for the dude, get an imagination.
This is a background character that appears for all of 0.8 seconds but I am obsessed with her. That soft pink mini fur coat with the hood and the matching gloves and go go boots? To die for. 9/10, whatever party she's going to I want an invite.
Girl looks like a creamsicle and I mean that as a compliment. The pink stripe on her tights is a cute, creative detail as is the crochet purse. The black belt looks a little slapdash though and the cut of the skirt is sloppy, 7/10.
Warm and cozy yet stylish. They are going to an ice rink for a date or possibly on an espionage mission against the Soviets (also for a date). This is also an all-time great Spock hat. 9/10.
All dressed up for their courthouse wedding! I am unbelievably fond of Spock's stupid bucket hat, a true gen z icon. 8/10.
When I was in grade 2, my school had a completely unattended bucket of rock salt next to the wall of the school, and every day at recess for almost an entire school year, I would eat a handful of rock salt out of it. Near the end of Grade 2, the bucket was taken away, though I still do not know whether they knew I was taking rock salt out of it to eat, as nobody had ever reprimanded me or even told me that they knew I was doing such a thing. Years later in middle school when I moved to a different house near my grandparents, there was a bucket of rock salt near their porch, and I yet again ate some out of it, though it was a much lesser amount and I only repeated it once after that visit. After none of these events have I ever had to receive any sort of treatment or had any lasting effects related to eating rock salt. Nobody ever found out about this on their own, they were only made aware after they were told, and none of the people I have told have had any direct relation to the school or repeated incidents

do you have a bucket list of fandoms you’d like to write for?
ooo this is hard because there's so many lmfaoo
So I'd love to return to Artemis Fowl but only if an idea sparks in my brain because I'm not going in there just to produce something I'm not as fond/proud of as Fairy Bound lmfao
Septimus Heap is another one I'd love to write more for and I actually have ideas!! I just need to brush up on canon and find time to write lmfao
Dude I don't know what it is about brigid kemmerer but her books are somehow just exactly what I want lately lmfao so I'd like to write for Forging Silver into Stars sometime and write more for Defy the Night (and judging by an ominous comment about book 3, I fear I might be devoting my life to fix it fics and aus for that one TT.TT)
The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea is one I have bits and bobs of a fic written for, I just need to finish it...
Gregor the Overlander is yet another one I'd like to write more for but that one's hard because those books are so devastating and amazing and if I really sat down to do something with fic for it, I'd want to do a 'book 6' type thing where I get closure and happy endings in a way that feels in keeping with the series, so it would be a long and involved project
Skyward but I need to find a ship for the character I wanna explore more of in fic because unfortunately i like romance too much to write gen jsdfa
I had this idea for Virals that if I ever reread the series I hope to write lmfao
And obviously Fence, but since im actively writing for it i don't think it really counts haha
(actually "pseudo-random number generators" but we'll get to that later)
Attempting to write for a general audience which is why I'm attempting to use simple explanations and focus on explanations rather than code.
How do they work
Step 1: prepare a bunch of bits (a seed), and from these bits, create the initial state of the generator
Step 2: modify current state
Step 3: given current state, produce a number from it
Example 1: MINSTD
Step 1: The state is a single 32-bit unsigned integral number variable. We don't know how to create a seed yet, so let's pick a number 23455264 as a seed.
state = 23455264
Step 2: Calculate the new state using the equation
(a*state + c) % m
MINSTD in particular uses a = 48271, c = 0, m = 2147483647
state = (48271 * state) % 2147483647
Step 3: use the new state directly as the output number
output = newstate
output = 485166575
Done: this generator provides numbers in range from 0 to 2147483647 (exclusive, so it will generate every non-negative smaller than 2147483647). Want another number? Go through steps 2-3 again.
Example 2: Doom (1993) pseudo-random number generator
Step 1: prepare an array of 256 (hopefully) random numbers. The array is not part of the current state, as it is not modified during step 2.
rndtable = [ 0, 8, 109, 220, 222, 241, 149, 107, 75, 248, 254, 140, 16, 66,
# the full table is too long, here is it if you're curious
120, 163, 236, 249
]
Also prepare an integral number variable. This is the state of the generator.
state = 0
Step 2: Increase the number by 1. If the number goes beyond what is an acceptable range of indexing the array, set it to the index of the first element.
state = (state + 1) % 256
Step 3: use the state to index the array.
output = rndtable[state]
output = 8
Done: this generator provides numbers in range from 0 to 255 (inclusive)
Tricks and Traps
Generating a number from range 0 to N*N (exclusive) when your generator only provides numbers from range 0 to N (exclusive)
Generate two numbers using your generator
high = gen() # let's say N = 10
low = gen()
Multiply one of the numbers by N and add the second number
x = high * N + low
Because "N" (10) is bigger than any possible value of "low" (0, 1, 2, ..., 9), no two different generations of "high" and "low" will result in same "x". The lowest possible value of x is 0 for high = 0 and low = 0, and highest is 99 for high = 9 and low = 9.
Generating a number from range 0 to H (exclusive) using a generator that provides numbers from range 0 to N (exclusive), and H is less than N
Let's say N = 10 and H = 4.
Step 1: find the biggest possible integral number divisible by H which is smaller than N. Let's call that number S.
Here S = 8 as 2*H = 8, but 3*H = 12, which is already bigger than 10.
Step 2: generate a number. If the number is not smaller than S, throw it away and generate another one until the generator will get you a number smaller than S
while True:
x = gen()
if x < S:
break
Step 3: Put the generated number into one of H buckets by using the modulo operation. Let this will be the resulting number.
As you can see, if we were to not apply the step 2, before doing step 3, values 0 and 1 would be 50% more likely to be generated than values 2 and 3. Good thing we discarded 8s and 9s before doing that.
Pseudorandomness
We're calling these numbers pseudorandom because we used a fairly simple step-by-step procedure to generate them, but also it is fairly difficult to say what would true randomness be.
We will never know if the devil creature will say something else than nine.
The two examples listed above were very simple pseudo-random number generators (PRNGs), but we have PRNGs which are good enough to generate numbers which must be unpredictable enough to secure your connection to your online bank. We call these cryptographically secure pseudo-random number generators. Explaining on how to use them will come in another post.
Picking a seed
We deliberately avoided explaining how to pick a seed for step 1 in both of these examples. Doom (1993) always picks 0 at the start of the level, but we have to keep in mind that using the same seed will result in the same sequence, which is why if we want to have different sequences, we will have to pick different seeds.
Two most common ways are using the current time, which is extremely predictable (everyone knows the current time), but good enough for quite a lot of programs. The alternative is using a better generator to seed our generator.
Picking a specific seed
The flip side of the fact that using the same seed results in the same sequence is that we can deliberately pick a seed to create the same sequence every time.
If you have ever played Minecraft or Factorio and saved a specific world seed to share with your friends, you know what I'm talking about.
Because Doom (1993) always uses the same seed and also has two separate generator states, one specifically for game logic and other for everything else, it can record your playthrough by recording your inputs and then replay it by simulating a player that rather than taking inputs from your keyboard or mouse, it takes input from the replay file.
The word of the day is travel, I am looking for Sugarcanes in a world where water in extremely rare. This legitimately took me about 6 hours.
My first idea for looking for sugar canes was trees along a coast, I figured sometimes ice might not freeze if there are leaves above the shore.
There are 4 somewhat rare items that I need to find in the overworld, The 2 types of mushrooms, Cactus, and Sugar Canes. The Red Mushroom is the first of those four, not even 75m from my base.
Headed back to my base because I left right before night fell, Minecraft before beds is a lot of waiting, this is when I started researching sugar canes in Winter Mode Worlds, I did not find anything yet
And that's surface exploration item #2, the Cactus.
I found this mountain and figured there might be a lot of overhangs on it because of how tall it is, where I found both of the ways water spawns in winter worlds, both in Gravel Beaches and in overhangs
After this, night fell again, and I did a little bit of mining while night passed. Got myself my first full set of iron armor, which will start to break by the end of this post and will end up in the collection.
I found this weird world gen thing, Ice only generating on the surface level, I think this is a quirk of lake worldgen.
Surface exploration Item #3, The Brown Mushroom. the worst fungus in minecraft to this day, love this guy.
about 150 minutes after that last image, I finally found sugarcane, this is the only block of water anywhere near here, super lucky. I wasn't even excited at this point, this was like 30 minutes before I had to get dressed for work and I wanted to make it back to base before I needed to leave.
Later, when I got back home, I finally found my base after being very nearly lost for way too long.
I did a bunch more mining and farming today, as well as crafting up anything I had all of the materials for, adding a bunch to my collection.
I added the Oak Fence, Wheat Seeds, Oak Boat, Raw Porkchop, Stick, Wooden Shovel, Wooden Hoe, Ladder, Wooden Axe, Wooden Sword, Stone Axe, Stone Pickaxe, Stone Hoe, Oak Stairs, String, Gold Ore, Iron Pickaxe, Milk Bucket, Bow, Iron Boots, Iron Leggings, Iron Chestplate, Iron Helmet, Block of Diamond, Book, Sugar Cane, Bookshelf, Stone Button, Stone, Oak Sign, Oak Pressure Plate, Oak Log, Painting, Paper, Brown Mushroom, Red Mushroom, Lever, Cactus, Redstone Torch, Wheat, White Wool, Bread, Bowl, Chest, Crafting Table, Golden Boots, Stone Pressure Plate, and the Jukebox (I accidentally put two ladders in the chest, this has since been fixed). I now have a total of 94 items, or 72% of Minecraft Alpha 1.0
1) Sense and Sensibility - [established Shikalee, wip]
Naruto definitely has a good sense for this kind of thing.
2) OmegaOmegaAlpha - [established Shikalee --> Juugoshikalee, abo, lime, oneshot]
They were considered an odd pair: two omegas.
3) De(e)ar Gift - [Gen, Shikamaru and Shikadai father-son oneshot]
It’s midday when Shikamaru braves the market place. The crowd bustles with activity and the Nara head regrets sleeping in. He knew he shouldn’t have. The thought was a bad idea from the get go, lit up in neon in his mind’s eye…yet his futon had been so inviting. Just a little sleep. A birthday treat.
4) Untitled - [Gen, Neji and Lee start of team building]
SPLOOSH!
5) Untitled - [Shikalee, hurt/comfort]
He can’t recall the mission right now. He had to- was it a retrieval? He can’t remember. Huh. He felt dizzy. He clutches at his rather wet torso. Keep pressure. Stay alive. Keep pressure.
6) Souls and Lack Thereof - [Sakulee, succubus au, lime, oneshot]
Food comes in all shapes and sizes for someone like her. Her favourite place to acquire her meals were various bars and clubs in the city. She doesn't stake claim like others like her, no, she just rotates where she eats.
7) Sandy Whirlpools - [Narugaa, prompts and other oneshots]
“Okay, so according to Sakura you gotta have water!” Naruto held up a bucket of water he had collected from the ocean. “Then the sand will hold its shape.”
8) Chain of Leaves and Blossoms - [Sakulee, prompts and other oneshots]
He first sees her on the train ride to school.
9) Over, Under and Inbetween - [Sakulee, hades/persephone au, wip]
Sakura frowns because this is not what she expects when arrives.
10) Tried and True - [Gen, Rock Lee and Metal Lee father-son oneshot]
“Ahh Papa! The baby is so small!” his son’s panicked tone made him pause. He watched as Metal took some breaths to compose himself, still carefully holding the infant (Lee’s beautiful grandchild!). “Is this normal?” He looked at Lee, eyes very misty.

🎶✨when u get this, list 5 songs u like to listen to, publish. then, send this ask to 10 of your favorite people (positivity is cool)🎶✨
Oh gosh. Favorite songs. This is gonna make me feel old I fear...
1. Laid by James. This whole album is actually my go to album when I need to focus at work and drown out the world. I can put it on and get lost in the task quickly. There is just something about it that allows my brain to relax and dial in (at this point it's muscle memory I suppose). It's a bit obscure but it works for me.
2. Bridge over Troubled Water by Simon and Garfunkel. This and Let it Be by the Beatles scratch the same itch for me. When I am anxious I put them on and they just sooth. I have a kid with anxiety and I have deliberately played Let it Be every time we are working on calming down to help the song have that mental reference. Music is powerful like that.
3. 9-5 by Dolly Parton. This always gets me going. It hits my social justice buttons and the beat of it gets you up and moving. Also it's Dolly Parton and who doesn't love Dolly. She's on my bucket list of singers I want to see in concert. Her music is compelling, tells straightforward stories and is relatable.
4. Musicals. I could listen to them all day. My family knows I am forever singing (oh so badly) a line from a musical in response to anything. Recently had a conversation with someone about how You've Got to be Carefully Taught from South Pacific almost shut down the show (Rodgers and Hammerstein stood their ground and the song remained, lyrics are still true today). But if I had to pick one...I know it is unoriginal but I am still not over Hamilton. I realize I am cheating by picking a whole musical but it's my post so I can do what I want!
5. Walking on Sunshine by the Bangles. That's my go to for upbeat pop music from the 80s (oh yes, proud Gen Xer here) when I just want to pick a song and let the algorithms take it away and play me all kinds of peppy cheery stuff.
6. Fire and Rain (listen I already picked a whole musical. You know I don't follow rules.) This is my song if I need to cry. It's hard to hold back when you listen to the lyrics. James Taylor's voice is smooth and the pain is real.
Growing up my parents sang all the time in the house. I could go on for hours about how their choices influenced mine. Music is 100% built into the fabric of my memories. Songs are visceral ways to bring back loved ones who are gone to me. My dad would walk around singing, I can hear him in my mind and see him teasing me to get me to join in even as I rolled my eyes at him. My mother is a gifted self-taught pianist who used it as her stress outlet.
Oh @domsaysstuff you didn't know you'd get a mini novel did you??? This was awful. Picking five. What a task. I could add around 100 more without thinking. Sending you a hug my friend!!!!
Exerpt from chapter 6 of ‘Prison Blues’ - Warning: Maggots
"Splendid. Then let's make a deal. You eat this one bowl of food right in front of my eyes to show you respect my orders. And, as a reward, I'll have better food sent to you in the future." Smiling a self-satisfied smile at his ingeniously benevolent proposal, he motions to one of the guards to bring the usual rancid, alive-with-maggots goo and bread that is supposed to be food.
As always, Cahir's stomach starts to turn just at the sight and smell. However, with the Emperor looking and the ever looming threat of being turned over to the torture master once again if he does not comply, he fights down the rising bile and takes a deep, steadying breath through his half-open mouth to avoid the worst of the stench. It is only food, not an instrument of torture. It cannot truly hurt him, even if it is utterly disgusting. Moreover, having to eat maggots can hardly be more humiliating than having to strip before the Emperor, can it? And he has done that. He is still naked on the floor. He only has to keep it down as long as the White Flame is watching, too. He can do this. He must. Still, his eyes well up with tears of shame as he brings the maggoty piece of bread to his mouth. He gags reflexively and quickly closes his eyes. Maybe it won't be as bad if he cannot see the wriggling white grubworms? But he can feel them moving in his mouth when he has taken the first bite. Which is decidedly worse. Valiantly suppressing the strong urge to hurl and spit it all out, he chews quickly and tries to swallow. However, it does not work. The bread is too dry, as is his mouth. And he is still missing a tongue to help with the swallowing. Cahir coughs and gags again. Desperate, he opens his eyes to look for the bowl with water.
"Here, take a sip. You are doing good. And I am here to help." The Emperor passes him the bowl with the tepid water, smiling down at the prisoner encouragingly. Gingerly Cahir gulps down some of the liquid and with it the bread that is in his mouth. And the maggots. They still feel alive as they go down his gullet with the rest of the food. No, don't think about it. Just do it again. Some more mouths full, a few more horrible minutes, and then it will be over. He takes another bite of the bread.
When Cahir has finally managed to eat up, his face is glistening with cold sweat and looking almost green. He is shaking and feels like he has to vomit any second now, but he cannot let that happen. This whole ordeal will be for nought if he does while the Emperor is still here.
"See, it isn't so difficult to follow my orders." Emhyr pats Cahir on the naked shoulder approvingly. "And it will be worth while, you'll see tomorrow. As I promised." He turns toward the door. "And, Cahir, you need to exercise. Regularly. The guards will make sure you do. I need you fighting-fit when the time comes."
The door closes behind the White Flame. Finally. And not a second too early. Cahir just manages to reach the bucket before his stomach convulses violently and he retches everything up again. Bits of bread and goo and maggots and all.

I'm just minding my business on my lunch break, trying to savor a few moments of solace in the bustling chaos of the office, when x decides to make my midday sandwich a lot less digestible. He strolls up, bold as brass, seeking my profound wisdom on the intricate dance of romance. I mean, really? Do I emit the vibe of a seasoned dating guru?
In front of my entire team, he unveils his quest for love counsel, completely oblivious and unbeknownst to him my questionable dating history – like that time I tolerated a man who thought physical abuse was an acceptable form of communication. Oh, and let's not forget the somnambulant escapade with an ex who had a peculiar fetish. According to him, consent is optional if it aligns with one's peculiar predilections. Not exactly credentials for Cupid's advisory board.
To add a splash of absurdity to this charade, the guy is a whole fifteen years my senior. I'm left pondering what peculiar rites of passage the Gen Xers engage in. Amidst his quest for love, he drops the bomb that he's on a race against time to conquer a checklist of fifty exploits before hitting the half-century mark. At 49, he's got his sights set on the Andes Mountains.
As he rambles on about his bucket list, my mind drifts to more pressing matters – namely, my unfulfilled yearning for an Andes candy bar. You know, the one with those charming mountains on the packaging? A moment of whimsy amidst the absurdity of it all.
Yet, amid the lunacy, a spark of inspiration ignites. I crave my own checklist, one that transcends the mundane. To outlive my father and face the challenges with unwavering courage – now that's a list worth crafting.
AirAsia Philippines Launches 1st P1SO Sale for 2024 with over 300,000 seats available
AirAsia Philippines is keeping a more competitive ticket pricing and the most enticing travel experience for guests, especially with summer fast approaching. This is amidst various factors affecting travel in 2024 such as inflation and fuel prices.
The World’s Best Low-Cost Airline is implementing ways to cushion the effects of volatile fuel prices following the Civil Aeronautics Board of the Philippines (CAB) memorandum of an increase in the Fuel Surcharge for the month of March at Level 6 from this month’s Level 5.
Depending on the destination, a level 6 Fuel Surcharge would mean an additional PHP185 to PHP665 for domestic flights and PHP 610.37 to PHP 949.51 for international flights. However, the airline is reminding guests that tickets bought within this month will not be affected by the Fuel Surcharge next month.
“AirAsia Philippines will continue to diversify its product offerings to cater the changing needs of our guests especially those belonging to the Gen Y and Z who are expected to travel more this year, and will be on a lookout for the lowest deals to save money”, AirAsia Head of Communications and Public Affairs and First Officer Steve Dailisan shares.
As of February, Boracay, Cebu, Bohol, and Puerto Princesa remained the top destinations travelers are looking forward to visiting domestically, while Bangkok, Incheon, Taipei, Narita, and Osaka remain on their bucket list for international travels.
To make travel more affordable, AirAsia Philippines is launching its very first PISO Sale for 2024. From 19 to 25 February, guests can enjoy a one-way base fare of PHP 1 for all domestic and international destinations for flights from 1 September 2024 to 18 June 2025. Over 300,000 seats will be made available for flights originating from AirAsia’s Manila, Cebu, and Clark hubs.
“PISO Sale is our commitment to ensuring affordable flights to our guests, especially those who are on a tight budget but would like to have a memorable travel experience. We remind our guests to be on the lookout for exciting promos and deals for flights, hotels, meals, and other ancillary products by visiting only our legit e-platforms - Fly AirAsia (Facebook), Superapp (MOVE) or via AirAsia’s official website (www.airasia.com)”, Dailisan added.
