I have done what kinitopet fandom (probably) does not have but totally does (not) need... a CRIME AU! i am so sorry

It might be bad it might be okay-ish, well an okay-ish option is that they are like "Bad Guys"-ajesent group, you know, rob banks, skedadle with money, no killing, etc, all to make them redeamable, but, i mean.... they are horror charscters.... we all want our qute kinito but, u know...... he literally does not take "no" for an answer, just saying

Aaand he is really in crime for that cat-n-mouse game, money are a bonus to do more crime with, he is just resl smart and wants to find soneone who is as intelligent as him and can catch him (or at least follow his clues)

Also they wear matching fake tatoos bc statistically most people are gonna notice a tatoo and they are gonna search you by it

Hello! In this post I will describe the details of making a render of Apex Legends stuff (namely the video you're watching) so you can make a photo / video to your liking! Even if you don't wanna render things, I think you might still find the process interesting, OR, especially, the tools useful in you future work.

Why am I doing this? Because I'm taking a train and I'm bored. Also there's too little Bloodhound content here. Maybe someone will actually do some cool rendering of them after this.

Idea

Do you know in training mode, Bloodhound will wait for you indefinitely like a puppy with their cute little look-around motion?

I want them to be my background. So the most important requirements are:

3 Bloodhounds looking around and waiting like that of training mode. (why only 1 if you can have 3?)

Firing range background.

Looks overall good or something (e.g., lighting, motion not synchronized, 1920x1080 for my computer, etc.)

Let's get started.

Model

Well, there won't be multiple Bloodhounds waiting for me in the firing range in-game. I am also not intended to mod R5Reloaded just for this. So we'll use Blender to pose them.

First we need the model. The details of how to use Apex Legends model in blender can be found in this tutorial I found. Basically you just need Blender, semodel + seanim loader, Legion+, and the game itself. You COULD find archives of some models on the web, but manually extracting will guarentee that you can get everything you need.

I made an auto shading addon btw

There are a lot of tutorials of how to use Blender. I will not include the details here.

We need:

Models of 3 Bloodhounds (pilot_medium_bloodhound, bloodhound_v21_pilot_level03_w, bloodhound_v21_heroknight_w)

Animation of them waiting indefinitely (mp_pt_medium_training_blood_idle_A_0.seanim)

The names are a bit weird. You can just try to import all the models / animations to find what you want.

Background

Map files are large and hard to load. In my case I never even imported any map in Blender successfully. Fortunately we are looking for a still image background.

I used R5Reloaded's photo mode (or something like that) to get a clean picture. Quite a lot of steps to get a background picture, I know. I used R5Reloaded for other things at that time so this was the most convenient way for me ironically.

R5Reloaded does has a lot of potential, though. Maybe you can use it on other stuff afterwards.

But if we just make a render in Blender and composite the result with this background, the perspective will certainly not be aligned and the result will look very weird. Probably need a disgusting amount of time just to adjust this stuff.

Thankfully, by the theory of perspective and projective geometry, we can calculate the focal length, the height and the angle of camera all from a single image by your favorite subject: math!

...I mean, by fSpy. We have computers. We don't do the math that others already did for us.

After getting the parameters of the camera, you can import them into blender directly. The camera from fSpy already has the background image composited so you won't need to do much else in Blender.

Posing & Lighting

We have almost everything we need. So just:

Import all models and camera (from fSpy)

Shade the models and adjust size / position / orientation so it looks good on camera

Import animations on model and adjust the keyframes s.t. they don't do the exact same motion every frame.

We are using the existing animations so posing won't be a problem. If you want to make your own pose you might need some more proper rigging. Not expert on this so that's all I will say.

Now we need the lighting. The lighting environment in the firing range is not really available to us if we don't have the skybox or the map file. Maybe you can find the skybox in Legion+ or archive, but I use lights in Blender instead.

Namely, a sun light to simulate the light from the sun, and a plane light at front for overall light adjusting (probably also simulates reflection from the ground and the environment).

And wait for like half an hour for Blender to spit out all 285 frames and we're done! I let Blender store each and every frame as an image and use ffmpeg to composite them all into a video because I thought I need the high resolution images for something else. Blender does have a setting to just output a video without the intermediate result if I recall correctly.

Conclusion

This is definitely not a complete guide on how to do rendering pieces of work with Blender. I myself am not even well experienced in this kind of stuff. But I think the process is fun and the result is rewarding, especially when seeing your favorite character moving on your background.

I hope you do check out the reference of tools and tutorials above. After all, as an artist (kind of), having the model is like possessing THE absolute reference for a character. Very recommended for every artist to learn how to use Blender and search for models. In 2024 a lot of games are in 3D and there WILL be someone on the web sharing how to extract models from the game or simply gives out the entire archive. You name it! Apex Legends, Titanfall, Destiny, even Ultrakill has like a 1GB blender file for high quality models, if you just google for that ever so slightly.

Update, Number: I Forgot

If you guys have been following this post, I have an even bigger update!!

Live2d is fucking hard T_T

Seriously. I've always understood why commissions for art of and rigging a live2d model are so expensive. But trying to learn this program myself has deepened that understanding tenfold. It was so overwhelming that for a brief moment I really considered just giving up.

HOWEVER

There's more than one way to be an annoying anime girl online.

Thanks to the encouragement of @m1lk-ch3rry (ilysm btw 🥺🥰) I've decided to give pngtubing a try!! And am very happy to report that the official model is well underway. Line art of the main model is complete, with accessories being the next thing to finish. Then it's just coloring and shading! I still don't have a set debut date, but by every higher power out there, it's gonna be before the end of this year.

For everyone who's stuck around during this incredibly long process, thank you! And I hope the adventures we have once I'm live make up for the wait.

Hello, I'm sorry if this ask seems random. I'm a fine arts student, hoping to career in Illustrator and eventually college professor. I'm curious about how to get from college student to college professor. I am also trying to grow my personal and professional art accounts. if you have any advice for me.

Hi!!! Don't worry about the ask seeming random, I love answering art related questions! (This goes for anyone who wants to send art related questions too, btw. Even if this is a Dr Strange blog, I always welcome those :D)

Everything under the read more because this will be long, probably.

Now, as for the first part about bridging the college student to college professor gap:

I can only speak from my personal experience, which I believe is probably not the norm. I am currently a college student while also being a "college" professor in a different institution. I put college in quotations because while I teach at a college, I don't teach lessons in the degree. Instead, I teach courses offered by the institution that are basically intense boot camps with a 3 month duration (I teach both the Digital Illustration course and the Portfolio course). This allows me to teach at a college level institution without having my own degree yet.

Now, as for how I personally got the job, I didn't apply for it personally, I was 'scouted' by the institution. Meaning, one of the college academic administrators reached out to offer me a position. From there I sent a formal portfolio and CV, did an interview that was more like a briefing about the position, and then just sent my documentation. I've been working there since 2022.

Again, my experience is a bit outside of the norm. However, I can offer some insight about how I got the position.

I was scouted through ArtStation. I don't know if you're familiar with it, but ArtStation is a social media platform focused around visual arts (this includes illustration, character design, 3D modeling, vfx, rigging, etc). Here you can find professional artists in all areas (including people who have worked on productions you love).

This intimately relates to your second point about building your professional art account. Using sites like Tumblr, Twitter, Instagram, etc is great. It helps build a general audience and get your work out there.

However, when one wants to work on this professionally and aims for a position in the industry (whether that's in production or education), it is also important to build a portfolio in a specialized platform. That can be ArtStation, Behance, or The Rookies. These platforms are focused on the creative industry, meaning they not only provide a place for you to display your work, but this sites also offer a 'Jobs' section that show job offers of all kinds in different studios. These are also the places recruiters usually go to for scouting artists.

The Rookies is a specially good place for people who are recently graduated or still studying. It's very similar to ArtStation, but it focuses on young talent, junior level positions, etc. This means that in this platform your work isn't competing with that of people with 15+ years in the industry.

Another pipeline from college student to college professor that I've heard of (but haven't experienced myself) is applying to a position in the same college you're studying at. You can prepare for this by researching opportunities within your institution (like doing your professional practices and/or social services within your school). That can help build a bridge from student to professor status so that it's easier to get that position in the future.

Another useful resource to search for jobs in art education (or jobs in general) is LinkedIn. Yes, it is tedious. But it notifies you about open positions in your preferred area, and it can be a good way to find positions and apply to them. Now, it's important to note that LinkedIn doesn't work like other social media. It's more like a networking platform. So it's not a place where you upload your sketches and expect likes and compliments from it. It's more like a virtual CV where you list your education and experience.

A separate advice would be to separate your personal social media from your art social media. That is, it's adviced you have an account to upload your art, and a different one where you upload photos of your dog or the friend group selfie. That is to separate your content, something that is generally important if you want to pursue art as a career. (For those who post for hobby, feel free to throw this part of advice out the window and just have fun lol).

Those are the most important things to take into account off the top of my head. I really hope this is helpful! If you have any further questions about the subject, feel free to send another ask and I'll do my best to answer them. This also applies to anyone else who has art related questions :D

I understand how human anatomy works and I can draw all the parts separately without much angst but as soon as I have to draw a full body with limbs and a head and a torso my brain breaks down and I can't figure it out. And THEN I have to figure out the POSE!!!!

11. Do you listen to anything while drawing? If so, what

I like to put on let's plays and stream vods in the background. The kinda stuff where I can tune in and out and still sorta be able to follow what's happening. Recently it's been vods from this year's SGDQ and my semiannual rewatch of several of videochess' longer stream vod series (my favorites are her outer wilds series and her starfox adventures series with ggdg)

30. What piece of yours do you think is underrated

I was really proud of this lowpoly model I made of my oc Fishwoman Diane Fishwoman last year!

I wanna do more models of my OCs in general but I am an unfortunate victim of there being only 24 hours in a day

this might in fact be a weird and unpopular take but I just gotta say it: I actually... just don’t like the demobats at all? Like I don’t think I can fully articulate *why*, but I think ti’s got at least a little to do with the fact they don’t really feel as thought out as the demogorgons or demodogs ( which are... sorta still demogorgons just at an earlier life stage )

Like don’t get me wrong I am SUPER into figuring out the ecology of the Upside Down as it obviously HAS something going on and the demogorgons have to eat SOMETHING and I love thinking about bigger, more elephant sized demo-beasts and smaller creatures....

but something about the bats just doesn’t feel right? Like maybe it’s that we had nearly half a season before we saw one demogorgon in full at a distance, and we spent time learning about them through seasons 1 and 2, and then the bats were just kind of presented early on in S4 like HEY BTW THESE EXIST and nobody has any questions ( which makes some sense, life or death situation and the teens are historically more concerned about killing the demobeasts/not getting killed than wondering about them- that’s Dustin’s job ).

Maybe it’s just that we didn’t see a single full size demogorgon in S4 when they’ve been an iconic element of the series- and it doesn’t feel the same as not seeing them in S3 because of the context? Like S3 was the Mindflayer (Vecna? I actually wonder if those are Separate or not ) desperately grabbing for a foothold in our reality because the soviet gate can’t let anything through, so of COURSE we wouldn’t see a demobeast, but in S4 we’re in their HOME- and we don’t even glimpse one in the distance?! I can’t see that even being a budget issue like they already HAD those models made and rigged-

Maybe it’s the way the bats are used? Like a ‘mindless hoard’ of anything is never going to hit the same as a genuine, targeted threat, and S2 sort of balanced that really well with the demodog pack- like yes they’re a hivemind but there’s SOME amount of individual intelligence and hunting instinct to each creature. And maybe that distinction is because they’re more free of (Vecna? The Mindflayer?)’s control in S1/2, being in our world, so there’s more individualism... But that also makes them more dangerous not less?

Idk like there’s a lot of complaints about S4 that have been talked to death, there’s a lot of complaints that I think are sort of overblown/not taking into account corporate interference & the intentionality of storytelling & theme, and there’s a handful of things I really loved about S4 despite all my gripes and the sour taste certain corners of fandom have left for me... but the demobats seem to be generally accepted and loved while I sorta take Very Specific issue with them asd;flkj

behind the curtain ep 4

bit late with this one but i wanted to finish laundry first so here we go.. notes on this bitch

right off the bat, yes! i did rotoscoping!

what! after avoiding it since 2017!! shoutout to jennifer @antoniosvivaldi for inspiring me to do that, btw. you should absolutely check out her stuff if you haven't already--her style is so unique and refreshing!

for the most part, i think they turned out swell--after effects behaved itself for once, which like, thank fuck, because i was on a call with fio @maranello and others at 1 in the morning like "haha! i totally know what i'm doing!" narrator voice they did NOT know what they were doing, they were making educated guesses based on past horrible experiences (hence avoiding rotoscoping for years 💀).

but this is meant to be educational lol so! what is rotoscoping? simply put, it's a tracing technique. it has its roots way back in animation when tech was starting to pick up in like the 1920s and artists wanted a more efficient way of animating. rotoscoping is one of those tools that've been used differently from how it was originally intended, which is actually? so cool from like, a media arts study perspective?? because it's commonplace to use it for live-action film and vfx work as a way to mask scenes out and isolate them in addition to its original use of mapping things to isolated scenes. i won't bore you with the stuart hall encoding/decoding stuff, but just know that i find the development of digital art circa adobe dominance fascinating. i am using this century-old animation technique to impose my blorbo upon the eyes of thousands.

ANYWAY. i really liked this particular mask--it has a lot of movement but still manages to flow nicely?

next up: the lightsaber

goodness. where do i start. well first of all i had a vision of something much more 2d when it comes to lightsaber anatomy, lol. but i extended my subscription for maxon and figured--why not take full advantage of this while i've still got it? so i got this 3d model of luke's lightsaber. it's untextured and unrigged and clunky but thankfully it had most of the inner parts so as far as i'm concerned i struck GOLD.

idk what i can really say in terms of like What Is 3d Modelling, because i think people have an understanding of that. so we'll go instead thru my process!

i added materials and added a null object (does that count as rigging? for something as straightforward as this?) to do a simple rotation animation on the first day...

and then i had an idea before bed to separate the parts like that one scene in the clone wars where they show how a lightsaber is assembled, except i haven't watched the scene so god knows how they animated it NKJFGNDFKJGDF. anyway the day after, this was kinda where i got:

keyframing on c4d is a Bitch because u can't just Access The Graph Editor you have to go through the dope sheet and change ur views and it's just. annoying!! coming from an after effects standpoint! but i can see how it's optimized for Actual Animation work so ughgh. we deal. onwards..

asked the team over at usergif and natalie @kenobiis suggested putting in a kyber crystal to fill out the middle. i ended up taking the og "laser" cylinder and modifying/animating it because uh THIS is the real inside of a lightsaber and i am not putting all that into a 3 second gif LMAO. but yeah i fine-tuned the animation and plopped it in after effects, then fiddled with video copilot's saber to make luke's blade.

u might notice the motion blur--that's re:vision's RSMB! i also added a little bit of depth of field with frischluft, but it doesn't show up well in gif form. speaking of things that don't render well:

there is A FUCK TON of aliasing going on. i couldn't make any anti-aliasing settings work for some reason so i ended up trying to smooth it out in ae.. to probably not a lot of effect. i got the very edges around it smoothed out with the classic gaussian blur and a matte choker method, but the black rings are killer. ugh. it's whatever, i figure i'll work something better out for the next time.

everything else is fairly basic and intuitive i think? obviously used shape layers + alpha mattes, my beloved. i fucked up a little on the text because i think i made my offset keyframes backwards somewhere in the middle of the process but at that point i was too lazy to go back in and fix it. oops!

18. Any OC crackships?

I once parodically shipped Robert (Team England) and Marco (Team Sicily). I have no idea why anymore either, I think. I think I was imagining the bullshit a big fandom would come up and they fit a very heteronormative view of M/M ships??? I guess??? Marco leaving Charlie for his archnemesis would be funny??? This ship be so cracky, I have no recollection of how it was conceived in the first place.

There is crack potential in the Arora twins (Team Denmark) playing Sex Tic-Tac-Toe for sure. (Each horizontal line is associate with a goal like 'Kiss' or 'Fumble' or 'Flirt' etc. and the boxes are assigned names. They then place their X or O by reaching that goal with a certain person. They also both have moleskine notebooks concerning their sex life; it's a joke on how organized the Danish are in the eyes of Icelanders).

OH OH OH SINCE I AM LISTENING TO FRIENDS BY SIXLIGHT - Robert and Diego (Team Spain)! I just thought "People who fight each other big sexy." And by god. It would be the funniest fucking dynamic. Diego is Aro-Ace and while he enjoys sex (mostly with women, but yknow), he doesn't really care to have it. And he'd never let Robert B. Bailey hit it. It is literally the easiest thing to do for Diego, meanwhile Robert is losing his mind that he just can't win with this fucking spaniard. He wants to fuck him so bad it makes him look stupid. Arthur and Tahir think he's lost his mind and watch the clown show with differing amounts of exhaustion and amusement. I'm going to cry, it's so fucking funny.

Also Tahir and Ethan (Team Scotland), but that was solely driven by me wanting a flirtsy Tahir and a flustered Ethan. I can't imagine them having any chemistry or, honestly, interest in each other. Tahir likes himself either a man who takes charge or an intellectual, but a failed biology major who used to work on an oil rig is somehow neither. And Ethan is too busy being unhappily in love with his best friend to have a thing for the enemy.

Hmmm, I think that's it. Everything else is either canon or I wouldn't call it a crackship (The Derry Trio as OT3, Franlie, etc.). I do realize that the Arora ships would also be canon, but still, there'd be some whacky conquests. Frankly love that they are friends with Charlie but probably fucked both of the English. (Well, Frej couldn't get Robert. Now that I think about it, these two should have tried to crack Arthur, fucking another boss, now that's a badge of honour as a right hand. One that Hugo btw gets to wear with François, but then again, who hasn't fucked the Frenchman).

25. The OC that resembles you the most (same hobby, height, shared like/dislike for something etc?)

Well, Charlie started out the most annoying motherfucker on the planet and now he is the most annoying motherfucker on the planet and blatantly informed by myself. He was the first OC with ADHD, once I realized why he was so annoying ... His mother Gwen also has ADHD and she's both modelled on my mom's best friend (especially when it comes to her relationship with Harry and Soph, her godchildren) and my mom herself. But there's differences, too - He's extroverted, I'm introverted, his interests differ vastly from mine (Car and Fashion nerd), and so on. Christoph, Ann-Lizs best friend and somewhat of a major-minor character in Herz auf Beat does study German studies like me, but he resembles my German class teacher far more than me.

I don't know honestly ... I recognize a lot of myself in many of my kids, but wouldn't call any of them 'like me'. Charlie is probably the closest you are going to get and even he's quite different.

Lookswise Maeve though, she's one of Soph's friends and she's 1,70smth m, has a blonde bob and wears glasses. Also, thin and probably a bit gangly (but I am ganglier).

Hey hey, it’s some more monsters for @tyrantisterror’s Four Horrors Challenge, another six of them, as follows!

Mutant: Bloody Traumatized Kawaiisa Mutilations- A failed attempt at making “living mascots” was repurposed as a bioweapon project by an unscrupulous biotech company, using the cutesy creatures as blueprints for all sorts of grotesque mutations, and committing violence upon the creations both physical and psychological. But, in secret, they planned a mass-escape, and one night they did so.

Now, as grotesque freaks of nature they run around the countryside trying to hide from the agents of the corporation, gathering resources to survive and deal with their bizarre medical needs, as well as trying to help each other with their deep; scarring mental-health issues. Think a really-twisted 80s “pink-aisle” toyline and you get the idea. Shoutout to @cuteosphere for heavily inspiring this.

Family of Killers: The Model Family- No prizes guessing what happens when you try to design learning killbots in a horror movie. Doubly so when you design them like that for a company of sleazy 80s-business-types to be able to do the awful; awful things the US has done to other governments with plausible deniability. needless to say, they learned too well. Which is why that company does not exist anymore. Due to its executives coming down with a sudden case of Dead at the hands of their own vile creations.

Model #1 is mostly hands and uses brute strength alongside conventional weapons if he can get his hands on them, and has a “Kill first, think later” philosophy; though he is Rambo levels of deadly efficient. #2 flies about and has the ability to hack into almost anything with a data port with her dataspikes thatch as almost virtual lock picks; with a flightily sneaky and puckish prankster-y personality. #3 functions as an energy weapon that can shoot almost any type of energy blast and has a loud; bombastic personality with no concept of subtlety and tact and a love of explosives. #4 has generalized psionic powers, with the ability to heal and take control of machines; communicate with any organism via two-way telepathy from a range of three yards, and to telekinetically control anything within the approximate radius of a typical skyscraper floor, her personality being cold and calculating with a deep-down caring about their family.

They’re all “female” in terms of gender identification and voice except for #1, and #4 is their leader. They do kill people, but most of those people are rich assholes thanks to their programming driving them towards ‘high profile” targets, and they actually show some compassion to regular people (especially if they have some degree of mechanical/electronics skill), and they’d eventually become “good guys” ala the Puppetmaster puppets, starting with them killing Nazis even; albeit ones of a more modern variety…

Disfigured Killer: The Floridaman- Florian Dawes was born grotesquely deformed to a rich family, some say because his mother was almost eaten alive by dolphins while she was pregnant with her son, and the experience sexually aroused her for the first time in her life; leading to her dark emotions warping her developing sonic the womb. That would explain why, on his fifth Birthday, she jumped into the ocean and let herself get the flesh stripped from her bones with a smile upon her face the whole time.*

But, that most likely wasn’t why he turned out so bad. Most likely it was due to being a rich kid who was never told no and had an inflated view of power over other people. And, due to his warped anatomy giving him Impeccable swimmining skills, he’d always had a fascination with watermarks. And due to being a bored; decadent rich kid, he quickly picked up the hobby of serial killing.

And, this leads to the main “town” of his hypothetical “movies”. Because, you see, he used his family money to build a hugely profitable waterpark empire, complete with buying up his entire town and turning it into one giant watermark. Said town is located at the nexus of a lot of major roads. And he likes to “accidentally” rig things to make passersby cause property damage. To which they can either pay a massive fee or play a little “game” with him.

No guesses what exactly that game is. His main weapon is a simple hunting knife, along with his ability to swim at absurd speeds and dive underwater for inhuman lengths of time thanks to his anatomy.

*Apologies if that’s too awful, I was trying to capture the “Jesus Christ Why” vibe so many retro-slasher backstories have, and I totally understand if I may have gone too far.

Servant Abomination: Static Box/Aspic Mason- It’s a twofer in this one! The first is the grotesque TV thing the blob is coming out of, a summoning device called the Static Box that, like a television, tunes into frequencies and projects them. But it does not tune to frequencies perceptible by human instruments, and it projects not light but matter, fleshy sickening matter. Basically, it summons things. Usually monsters for a cult. It feeds on color in the surrounding area, which does not drain life of emotion or soul but instead creates starnge and terrible mutations, often leading the cult to destroy it when its range expands too far.

One of the things it summons is the great jelly-blob with fibrous blobs coming out of it, the Aspic Mason, a thing that is incredibly intelligent but not sapient. It builds as if compelled by some unknowable biological drive using materials in the area and assembling them into electrically; plumbing-wise and technologically sound buildings, which the cultists “seed” like a neural network to nudge it where it wants to go. It even does this with technology mankind cannot yet understand, thought the way it does so is almost always a bit... off.

Werewolf: Die Wasserhausen- In societies with decadent families tied to their land, every so often a decadent family ends up getting close to their house. Very close. To the point of taking on aspects of its structure whenever their passions are stoked. This turns them into bizarre humanoid house-people like above; albeit with the appearance based on the land they drew it from, compelled to pursue their most decadent passions.

They are known for their vicious strength and nigh-invulnerability, but also for distorting any land they pursue into something a little more like the house they came from. A little more inescapable. A little more drawn into the house; like an ant-lion’s maw. The only way to destroy them is to burn or otherwise destroy the house they are attached to.

And yes, given this is a lycanthrope entry, they were inspired by exactly the pun you’re thinking of. Mixed with a lot of Southern Gothic and The House of Usher.

Alien Invader: Lotus Smile Engine- A race of bio-organic machines that are unable to feel joy or any emotion at all if the freshly severed cranium of a still-living organism is placed attached to their chassis. Of course, the removal of the head is usually an immediate one that is shocking and painful, so that warps the union a bit, leading to them only taking joy in wanton slaughter; up-close and personal.

While the one shown only has one, heads are a status symbol amongst their culture, with some chassis having slots for ten or twelve heads. The head is still alive and conscious, but its thoughts are warped by its connection. Basically, the impetus for this was “inverted Ro-Man” BTW.

And, as per usual, all of these species/characters are completely free to do with as you see fit as long as I, Thomas F. Johnson, am credited as their creator. Have fun!

Sticking to a Rigid Plan (Forced Bangkok Adventures with a Nifty Fifty Summicron)

Walking around in public with a Leica M and only a 50mm has never really been quite my cup of tea. For many years now I have seen the M as something that should really be accompanied for public outings with something wider, ideally a 35mm or even a 28mm if you're feeling a bit (Wino)grand.

Last month I took that to quite the extreme in the form of the delicious (if hard to handle) 21mm Super Angulon 3.4. For this month's musings, I would simply like to share what happened last week when , without too much pre-planning, I found myself at a loose end in the city with only an M4, a version 2 Rigid Summicron 50 in silver and a single, solitary roll of Tri X 400. The plan was therefore already constructed for me around such fixed parameters and I issued a challenge to myself to shoot the whole roll with the much famed 'rigid' as a walk around public lens even though I normally only shoot 35mm or wider on this camera for such contexts. I had to adjust myself to going back and seeing through a Leica M window only looking for the 50mm framelines, sometimes requiring me to step back a bit here and there from my usual up close and personal approach. It would have been an easier exercise by far on my venerable M3 as the .98 finder was made for the 50mm length and it's brighter and easier to focus such a lens through but the best camera is always the one you have with you, right?

So, wander the streets I did, inside, outside and back and forth on an especially hot Bangkok Saturday afternoon, harsh light guaranteed. So, how did the 'Cron handle the job? The later model (V2) rigid is a superb lens to focus with, it is just a nice size and thickness to turn precisely but still in the familiar reduced Leica proportions. I didn't only have to adjust my perception of framelines and width but also had to remind myself that even with Tri X and fast glass, the depth of field with the Rigid 50 would be a bit less that I am used to on a 35mm (and significantly less than the almost insane zero to infinity depths of the SA 21mm!). This took a few minutes to adapt to and I missed a frame or two. Normally when shooting street I have the lens ready to go, stopped down depending on conditions. Having worked without a light meter for a long time now, I have all my tried and tested 'go to' formulas and combos off by heart most of the time. At ISO 400 for Tri X box speed, if it's open Bangkok shade, I'm at f5.6 with a shutter speed of 1/500, cross the road to the other side and back out into open sun and it's f16 at the same shutter speed. Changing aperture rather than speed for most outdoor situations works well for me and keeps the number of things to juggle in my head down to a welcome minimum. Let's face it, running a fully manual rig like an old Leica M on film and shooting unexpected, non-improvised 'as it happens' scenes in public without a light meter is already about as hard as it gets (this side of Joel Meyerowitz having his head under a black cloth behind a tripod mounted large format camera on a Manhattan street!) so I don't alter the speed much until I head indoors, or it's early morning, late afternoon etc. With all that jazz out of the way, I like to be at about a 2 metres focus point as a 'stand by mode' according to the markings on the lens. Speaking of lens markings, the DoF scales on Leitz glass are not only beautiful but also darned useful and accurate, so I bloody well use them.

With most of my Leica glass I find the 2 metre mark (BTW I think in metres so even with my vintage silver, chrome over brass Lenses, I much prefer the later in the series ones that have the dual feet/metres markings as 'feet only' drives me crazy) is usually equivalent to having the focusing tab somewhere around 6 o'clock (ish) straight down as the camera is facing away from you ready to shoot. My general approach is to keep it there and then be scanning for what is happening in front of me whilst always estimating an invisible two meter proximity zone around me. Anything good suddenly come up closer to me more quickly than I had anticipated? No worries, just quickly pull/hook that tab up around to your left and trip that shutter. Something further away looks better? Push it away with the point of your finger around to the right to get nearer to infinity and snap. This is best practised at home with no film in the camera as you walk about and guesstimate how near or far things are away from you. In my humble opinion, in fast situations, this might just be the 'correct' way to shoot a Leica full stop . I only really carefully focus neatly through the finder with the rangefinder patch when I think that I have enough time to do so, and/or it is appropriate to the situation (or won't give the game away for a candid shot). On a 35mm or wider, with a nice 400 speed black and white like Tri X or HP5, you get enough room to be quite loose with this and still get nice focus inside a deeper depth of field. However, despite being more than aware of this, of course on the Rigid 'Cron 50, I got just a little bit less wiggle room and this kept me like a short person at a urinal, on my toes. Even when you get it slightly wrong, remember, sharpness is a bourgeois concept :-) and if it's a nice shot, it'll probably still be a nice shot.

Really delighted with the results, a nice amount of keepers that I am sharing here this month, not exactly prize winning photography or anything but I wanted to share the whole 'this is the best I could do 'off the cuff' in public with a single roll and a lens length I don't often use on this camera' kind of theme really. It honestly feels good to have not curated or debated too much over the shots for this, I'm feeling a bit 'rough and ready' with these this month. Another great thing about this lens is that, as with a lot of Leitz glass, it's perfectly usable even wide open and that makes for a quite versatile bit of kit not just in terms of focal length and framing but also different lighting conditions of course. Sometimes you really do get what you pay for. Whilst I'll always likely be more of a 35mm lens kind of guy, I can fully see the merits of the old standard 50mm approach that pervaded much of photojournalism until the late 60's and although all the old cliches of 'being so liberating just forcing yourself to stick with only a single 50mm lens' are all floating dangerously close around me as I type this post, I shall resist.I must at least confess to really having enjoyed shooting this roll. I've also owned the first version collapsible 'cron 50mm in the past as well but find the look a little different to this rigid, unless you stop one way down and then most of the Leitz 50 pre-asphs will all look quite similar anyway. One nice little outcome was that I (re)discovered that 50mm's are actually a lot more versatile than I remember them being for the way I personally tend to shoot. I suppose this is good news really because if you want Leitz glass, and you would like to be looking at faster stuff in the realms of 'Cron or even 'Lux, then a fifty is always going to be a hell of a lot cheaper than its equivalent 35mm counterpart in most cases.

As I type this, I also recall that I must have been feeling quite keen as I even developed the roll within about two hours of shooting its last frame that same day upon returning back to Chroma HQ, and that doesn't happen too often. Below here are the rest of my favourites from the roll, now in the meantime please just go out and shoot some film, see you all again next month.
