Diary Of a Part Time Puppy (JJK)

(Sneak Peak) (Shifter au, Hurt/comfort, magical Realism, Eventual Polyamory)

Summary: Both you and Jungkook are outsiders in your respective species. You- a witch without a coven, and Jungkook- a wolf without a pack. But together you make something of a family.

A/n: This is part one to my newest series! there will only be 4 parts to this one (i swear 😭 no more than four), i’m so excited to share this with you guys <3 i’m really really loving this version of jk. This is an unapologetically cute story and i’m not going to apologize for purposefully writing something that will make your feet kick.

Sneak Peak: Somewhere in the past.

Shifter kids tend to come to the orphanage in waves and batches with the breeding season; lost because the mountain packs have a tendency towards disorganization or brutal practices that the government can’t ignore and deem worthy of ‘rescue placements’

Never mind the fact that being separated from their pack is far more traumatic than many of these practices. like many other things in his life, jungkook doesn’t have a choice. There is no pack lobbying for his return, no parents that show up like large shadows on the periphery of the fences just to watch their pups or howls from far off in the night whispering his name. there are no court dates promising reunification.

for Jungkook- there is no one.

There are maybe 12 others in his immediate year so at first nothing about Jungkook seems out of the ordinary. he’s just a dark splotch in a rambunctious batch of different pelt colors. All of them are kept on tight leashes (sometimes literally) because shifter pups are a handful- let alone when they don't have a pack structure or any omegean parents to scent them docile or an alpha parent to scruff them stupid.

But as Jungkook gets older it gets harder and harder to hide how he differs, even from the other shifters.

First, he was just the fluffiest pup. A little curly-haired wolf with fur as dark as pitch. The color of the forest on nights when there is no moon made to blend in for the hunt. Ironic then that he was scared of the dark.

They think that maybe he’ll grow into another coat. But he overhears a visitor murmuring that pups with dark coats are bad luck, that they foretell a pack that won’t stay together or a lone wolf (they use Jungkook’s predicament as a self-fulfilling prophecy).

The more he blends in the safer he'll be, but blending in gets harder and harder as he grows and grows and grows.

It was cute at 6 when he was a little extra bulky and a little more to cuddle, when the handlers and volunteers at the orphanage would let out little ‘ooofs’ when he’d flop over their laps for belly rubs.

It got less cute when he’d outgrown most of his peers and achieved the stature of an average wild wolf by age 9. By then, no one bothered him or tried to nip at his blanket, too scared that he'd nip at theirs and leave big rips in them.

He reached the size of a full grown shifter by age 12, and He was downright terrifying by 14 when he reached the size of a full grown horse. Big paws and a long shaggy tail that got hair everywhere, a big barrel-shaped body that didn't fit through most doorways.

And It didn’t stop there. He just got larger. By long deemed un-adoptable by 16. Too old and too big and too much (yet somehow never enough).

Jungkook didn’t stop growing. By 18, He was the largest shifter that he'd ever seen. Everyone who saw him also told him he was the largest shifter anyone had ever seen.

He wasn't anything like his wolf form while human either. Too quiet and small and shy, scared of thunder and anything with too many legs. Wary of overcooked vegetables and afraid of the dark and his own shadow.

Jungkook doesn’t think he’s ever going to outgrow that.

They don’t put nightlights in the shifter pups’ rooms, they say it’s supposed to help them develop better night vision. But Jungkook can't help but squeeze his eyes shut as tight as he can- telling himself that when he opens them it will be daylight again, that the shadows will stop dancing with something just out of reach. Hidden monsters that Jungkook can almost see, can almost feel their claws sinking into his skin or combing through his fur.

Looks can be deceiving; Even in his wolf form he only ever wanted to cuddle and lick at the other pups, he only ever wanted to bump sides with them and sate the tireless itch in his chest that the others seemed not to feel. The wanting- the restlessness- The ache for hands to touch him and make his body feel real.

He stopped dragging his sleeping pad off his bottom bunk and over to his neighbors when he was six, but it’s always hard to sleep. His bed is too cold, too absent of other scents. Instincts that he doesn’t understand reach out for hands and love that isn’t there. Nose searched the air for a familiar scent- anyone that smelled safe.

But Jungkook won’t know what love smells like for a long long time.

It didn’t take long until he was excluded from games with the other pups- His presence was too much of an advantage to tip victory in one team’s favor, he was too fast when it came to tag, his teeth too sharp to play soccer without bursting the ball.

It wasn’t long until even the friendliest of hands started to hesitate before they pet him, and fear started to gather like a storm cloud whenever he walked into the room. There's Jungkook- the big one, the dangerous one, the one that looks more like a real wolf than the others.

It didn’t take long for them to start calling him a monster.

It took even less for him to begin and believe it.
