Do you guys realize this was one of the only times we’ve seen Dazai’s thoughts??? I love how he is such an enigma most of the time, but when it comes to Chuuya you see the human side of him.

The adaptation of Dazai's farewell, while not perfect(cough missing flashbacks cough), is still fucking amazing.
Ther lighting was perfect. THE PAUSE Dazai had, while having his gay memory montage over Chuuya. Red and Blue lol.
But the way he thought about their relationship from when they were 15 and how they've always trusted and depended on each other even if they argued. The way they are two souls in different bodies. Dazai thinks Chuuya's so incredibly human and seeing him as a vampire must hurt but he believes in Chuuya's humanity more than anyone else.
Seeing him drown in a box might bring up different memories of a lab and unethical human experimentation(see Stormbringer Light Novel)
Tumblr media
The way he lets himself look vulnerable and worried, maybe sad before he closes off his own humanity because he's playing a game with one of the world's most dangerous men. Just UGHHHHHHHH. Dazai can't be open with anyone other than Chuuya.
They say eyes are a window to the soul right? That's why his eyes are closed/blocked.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And the way his smile is so goddamn fake in the end of the scene where he says "he can't think of any moments where they understood each other" Because Dazai is always forced to put on a facade except when it comes to Chuuya.
Tumblr media
Chuuya is the only one who can understand Dazai's true motive so I'm thinking maybe even in vampire mode, he'll see Dazai's intent even if he thinks he's being annoyed about it. Dazai is showing Fyodor right now that what they have is nothing shallow and I think it's beautiful how they try so fucking hard to understand each other even if they can't be honest with each other.

THEY DIDN'T RUIN THE SKK SCENE. THEY ACTUALLY MADE IT GOOD. THEY MADE DAZAI HAVE EMOTIONS. THEY PUSHED THE RED AND BLUE TO FULL SATURATION. I DIDN'T EXPECT TO BE HAPPY BUT I'M PLEASANTLY SURPRISED.

tbh i (surprisingly enough) really liked how they animated dazai's speech... the movie-projector effect they used for the flashbacks is pretty and nostalgic and dazai's expression is just. miserable
Tumblr media
and also my boy mamoru miyano had rent to pay because the way he delievered that gay ass speech was just WOAH. gave me chills. the entire budget was spent on this scene fr

BSD fandom bear with me as i do some math, cause I've been trying to figure out just how far this season is going to get in adapting the manga, and today's episode threw my calculations out the window!
This is a chart I've been using to keep track of the episodes of S5 so far:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The average number of manga pages adapted per episode is 104,7.
The largest amount of pages adapted in an episode is 129 (episode 3).
The smallest amount of pages adapted in an episode is 81 (episode 7).
If the average remains 104-ish, this season should surpass current manga chapters by a couple of months and end around chapter 112, assuming that future chapters' lenght stays the same.
BUT, that's a lot of assumptions, and the average of pages as been going down in the last few chapters... So I have decided to calculate some possibilities!
The worst (realistic) case scenario is: Ep 8: ch 100-102 (87 pages) Ep 9: ch 103-105 (87 pages) Ep 10: 106-part of 108 (80/90 pages) Ep 11: part of 108-110 (80/90 pages)
The best (realistic) case scenario is: Ep 8: ch 100-103 (120 pages) Ep 9: ch 104-107 (123 pages) Ep 10: 108-110 (100/110 pages) Ep 11: ?????? at least 3 other chapters, taking us to chapter 113 (released next december if they don't do any more half-chapters)
Now, I imagine that the truth will be somewhere between these 2 scenarios... But it is reassuring that - unless they decide to REALLY stretch the upcoming episodes - it doesn't look like Season 5 risks finishing with a cliffanger after chapter 109!
...I hope!!

Bones doesn't arbitrarily decide which bsd panels become adapted, and Kafka Asagiri is a scriptwriter on the series.
Factors that contribute to animation decisions include, but are not limited to, (1) time constraints (ex: airing seasons, marketing, maintaining viewer attention; contract negotiations); (2) budgetary constraints; (3) other medium constraints (ex: number of frames, length of time per episode); (4) medium opportunities (ex: music, timing to manipulate mood and tension); (5) differences in laws and regulations for different mediums (ex: subject matter censorship is different in publishing vs. animation); (6) different creative collaborators (ex: editors vs storyboarders/scriptwriters/animation teams); (7) continuity (ex: adapting an event that happened in the past as happening in the present to bridge gaps or opportunities in the medium, which then necessitates further changes to accommodate where the arc then falls in the characters' and story's arcs); (8) opportunities to further explore characters since the same personalities can make different choices even in similar circumstances; and (9) viewers consuming multiple adaptations (ex: ensuring there's something new or interesting in each adaptation so those who are following all of them don't become bored and are rewarded for following the story across mediums).
Anyway, all of this to say, y'all sound like broken records when you homogenously complain about Bones' choices, as if the light novels + manga + anime don't share a writer and creative directors, and your failure to think critically about the "why"s of the adaptational choices flattens your analyses. You're not beholden to do better, but it's worth considering.

OMG TECCHOU WITHOUT HIS HAT.
HE LOOKS SO GOOD THIS EPISODE. HE'S HOT, HE'S BEAUTIFUL, HE'S PRETTY, HE'S CUTE, HE'S HANDSOME. (I'm not a simp I swear). He's so babygirl(I promised never to use that word T_T)
Ngl they kinda made him getting slammed into a truck painfully kinda hot...but I don't have time to unpack all of that.
He's just so endearing with his ideals of justice and believing in Jouno and wanting to put him above the mission(lol gay). Not to mention his cute little quirks like eating questionable food combinations or watching ants.
Even with all of Studio Bones' fuck-ups, this is one of the things they've managed to do right.

Ranpo! Is! Autistic Coded!
Hear me out! I definitely think Ranpo from BSD is Autistic coded! It only occurred to me during my second watch-through but a lot of his mannerisms actually match up a lot with my own experiences as someone with ASD! :0
I found a whole article explaining a lot of different things that make him Autistic coded so I'll link it here! But I'll also make a TLDR version too in case the link doesn't work!
BASICALLY!
1.Infodumping/Overtalking
2.Missing tons of social cues
3.Obliviousness in many situations
4.Not understanding/feeling/expressing emotions the same as others
5.Comfort objects and stimming
6.Meltdowns
7.Sensory issues (especially with clothing)
8.Hand flapping
9."Childish" or unusual interests/hyperfixations
I love him so much! (Even though Akutagawa is my ultimate favorite character)! I would love to elaborate on the points made above but the article does a better job than me!
Tumblr media
UPDATE!! I JUST STARTED WATCHING SEASON 4 SO UNDERNEATH HERE WILL BE S4 SPOILERS!!! PROCEED WITH CAUTION!!!
So based off of all of the Ranpo LORE revealed in the first episode his Autism beams are stronger than ever because HEAR ME OUT!!!
So it's revealed that Ranpo always gets perceived as childish even when he doesn't wish to be perceived that way (I know he's 14 but he says something along the lines of like "Here we go again, getting treated like a child") which is something many people with Autism (me included) have to deal with from our NT peers
AND! Not to mention the particular eating habits from when Fukuzawa was taking him out to eat red bean bowls with mochi in them and he didn't eat any of the mochi (in any of the 20 bowls)
AAAAAND! This is the spiciest part! It was revealed that Ranpo kept getting fired from jobs because of how blunt he was with the truth and how he would easily confront his superiors about their past or their crimes! It's so hard for many Autistic people to keep a job oftentimes because many of us don't understand social cues!
Another thing was that Ranpo automatically assumed that all of the tiny details he noticed were common knowledge and that everyone was on the same page as him, when in actuality he was noticing things that nobody else had yet to pick up on!
There were many other moments where Ranpo either didn't pick up on social cues or said/acted in ways that were out of pocket or not "normal" if that makes sense, and it only strengthens the argument that Ranpo is Autistic coded!
FUKUZAWA IS SUCH A NICE ADOPTIVE FATHER TO HIM OKAY AAAAH I'M ONLY ONE EPISODE IN BUT LITERALLY I LOVE RANPO SO MUCH! HE JUST LIKE ME FR FR
OKAY SO ANOTHER EDIT/UPDATE!
IN EPISODE 2 RANPO SAYS SOMETHING VERY DISTINCT AND APPLICABLE TO MOST PEOPLE WITH AUTISM AND IT WAS THAT "There's something that everyone else gets that I don't"
And then he has a small meltdown in the theater and you can clearly see people are starting to stare if you look closely
I literally relate to him so much so much so much
IN EPISODE 3, Ranpo also notes that he can't pay attention to things he has no interest in, which is something I personally really struggle with (especially as a college student RIP)
I'm not 100% sure if his breakdown at the end of episode 3 would constitute as something that should be added to this list, but I think it's noteworthy because I myself have also had similar meltdowns that went very similar to Ranpo's and I want to mention it.
I know I keep expanding this list as I find more and more content but somehow Ranpo's existence and the way he is unanimously respected and loved by the ADA is somehow really validating and comforting to me at the same time. I know BSD is fiction but somehow I see myself in Ranpo and yearn to be loved in the way that he is by all of his friends.

My re-watch recommendations (responding to your earlier post):
-Season 1 Ep 10 (do I need to explain myself? First EM apperance, first interaction between Morty and EM, citadel episode etc.)
-Season 3 Ep 7 (another EM character study and citadel episode)
-Season 3 Ep 8 (basically an anthology of Morty moments and interactions with his family)
-Season 4 Ep 2 (the dating app episode, might be a good plot device to use in future writing and another appearance of Morty's unhinged side + deteriorating relationship with Jerry)
-Season 5 Ep 8 (Rick's character study)
-Season 5 Ep 10 (Another EM episode)
-Season 6 Ep 10 (Lots of Smith family interactions, Rick being at his lowest, and a sprinkle of Star Wars inspired satire)
-S7 Ep 4 ("The Spaghetti Episode", I don't think this episode has much character-related stuff in it, I just like it.)
-S7 Ep 5 ("The Evil Morty Episode", my personal favourite R&M episode of all time)
-S7 Ep 6 ("Another Morty moments anthology)
-S7 Ep 10 ("The Morty Episode", the fear hole needs no introduction.)
Alright hopefully that helped narrow it down, a completely unbiased list of not at all my favourite R&M episodes.
As for my actual ask...
Why is Morty your favourite character?
Tysm for the recommendations! I’ll definitely be making a few analysis posts abt some of these later
As for why Morty is my favorite, I think it’s because there’s so much that can be done with him in the show! He’s the kid that’s innocent at first but is dragged on these mentally damaging adventures that slowly makes him see the world as a shitty place, but he still is a nice person and tries to help other ppl when he can. But I honestly claimed him as my favorite even before I actually watched the show, i don’t rlly know why tho lol it’s something that I tend to do before I get even get into a show (like Nikolai and Dazai in bsd)
Plus there’s so much that can be done with him whenever I write abt him too which is always gonna make me love a character cuz it makes my job easier lol
Honestly I don’t have a real answer to this that I’m absolutely sure of, I just rlly like his character
