tiefgarage am dom // köln altstadt
there is underground parking under the domplatte in cologne. that in itself is not spectacular information. however, you can immerse yourself in the history of cologne in this complex, because the remains of the old roman city wall run right through the underground car park, you can look into a cellar from the same period and discover a hidden medieval well. the whole thing is embedded in the brutalist architecture of the garage. on one side, the reinforced concrete of modern times and on the other its ancient predecessor in an aesthetic symbiosis.
and the best thing about it is that even when everything upstairs is flooded with crowds of tourists, it is relatively quiet and empty downstairs. apart from the cars, of course.

kulturkirche ost // köln buchforst
former auferstehungskirche
architects: georg rasch & winfried wolsky
completion: 1968
one of the most exciting buildings of post-war modernism in cologne is located in buchforst. the former auferstehungskirche, now the kulturkirche ost, is a strictly geometric building in the shape of a tetrahedron with brutalist elements but also a lot of wood in the construction.
the interior is lit by daylight openings in the ceiling and, together with the wall structure resulting from impressions of the reinforcing timbers in the concrete, makes for fascinating plays of light.
the church is definitely worth a visit for architecture lovers.
