but yeah i think there’s a lot of funky designs in regards to making the coral function as a whole guy!!!! it’s such a cool concept + im going to try n make one as costume… fingerz crossed!!!!

taz ethersea went so fucking hard with its worldbuilding. like oh yeah here are the brinearr. they're people made out of coral, each one is inhabited by a coalition of ~5ish different souls who refused to be raptured. except one of them has a sixth soul from a murdered adventurer that couldn't fully integrate with the other five souls so they carry him around in a lantern. also except this other one who has no souls at all. also unrelatedly there is a ship made out of a god's corpse. they call it the biggest baby and god hates that.

So something I feel like could be considered when designing Zoox or Brinearr characters in general:

Yall I have had a moment of realization

What if “older” Brinearr take younger Brinearr under their wings when they first amalgamate so that they can help the younger Brinearr kind of figure out the swirling thoughts, feelings, emotions, histories, of 6 or so different Einarr.

So when Guthrie was referring to his “mom” he was referring to the Brinearr that took responsibility for helping him adjust to this world who the two of them thought “mom” was the best title for.

And then “stepdad” is another older Brinearr who also stepped in to help Guthrie adjust to his new life and potentially has a relationship with “mom”

And this is just a new and beautiful family dynamic that has occurred by necessity in Founder’s Wake with all the new Brinearr

And maybe the reason Zoox is not as well adjusted to life and keeps asking clarifying questions and doesn’t really have concrete pronouns is because when they amalgamated they didn’t have an older Brinearr to guide them or maybe they had to separate from their Brinearr guide and so they’re looking for help from those around them

And why Guthrie could tell immediately that Zoox was newly formed and was softer with them

ok but devo would’ve been like. one of the FIRST kids born in founders’ wake. can you imagine how weird it must’ve been for parents who grew up on the surface to raise a generation of children who have no memory of the surface, who have never seen the sun except for what reaches the ocean floor, who have never seen a bird or laid in the grass with a picnic or watched a meteor shower? children who look at brinearr and don’t think twice about the philosophical implications of dead souls taking up residence in a coral body because to them, that’s just their schoolteacher or neighbor or friend? children who can’t imagine a world population of billions, who can’t even comprehend of a life outside of founders’ wake? can you imagine your kid asking you what clouds or stars or sunsets were like, and trying to explain and show them pictures, but being able to tell that while they understand the words you’re saying and are trying to picture it, they just don’t get it and never will? i’d be torn between heartbreak that the children would never know these things, or jealousy that they’d never miss them.

Headcanon that gender for the Brinearr is very weird cuz their genders are like a mix of the gender of their past lives. Like a LOT of them are non-binary or bigender but it’s also common to be mostly a guy but with a bit of girl in you. Like you can quantify EXACTLY how much of each gender you have “I’m three quarters female but one fourth of me was a guy so im still a little male” it’s almost unheard of for a Brinearr to be 100% binary. And for those who had genderqueer past lives it’s even weirder.

And since Zoox wasn’t ever an Einarr and doesn’t have any past lives he’s agender. When he was born he was asked his pronouns and he was very confused so he just copied the last guy and that’s why he’s a he/him

had to add my two cents to the “what do brinearr look like” b/c I had such a vivid image of a kinda ball jointed body with big barrel chests of those like cement coral growing things they put in the ocean.

omg i need to use my knowledge gained from anatomy & physiology to design a brinearr

so I think I forgot to listen too closely to what Brinearr look like because

very first try at character designs while listening to the episode, next time Amber gets a leather jacket and also Devo won’t be Literally A Boy

it’s just that he’s my exact age so my first instinct was “oh so like, a child? okay got it”

that the soul inhabiting/animating Zoox is Zoox and Zoox alone.

you know, even if it was calm, quiet, and hopeful/heartwarming, the ending of that last episode is haunting just because, once again, a theory I’ve proposed has been confirmed. I was right—AGAIN.

on a side note, it’s neat that it was a conclusion Zoox came to himself instead of being a standard reveal or plot twist.
