something i think a lot of people miss because its name is EELektross but the tynamo line is in very large part based on lampreys.
lampreys are incredibly basal (resembling the ancestral form, "primitive") vertebrates- agnathans (non-jawed) are a group of fishes that include the lampreys and the hagfish, which split off from the rest of the fish we know before moving jaws existed. they can give us a good idea of what some of the earliest vertebrates kind of looked like! they have one big sucker mouth, just like eelektrik and eelektross! (all photos via wikipedia unless otherwise mentioned)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
also very of note are the dots down the side of the head on both of these- they're lamprey gill slits! unlike the operculum of most bony fishes or the multiple tall gill slits of the cartilaginous fishes, lamprey gill slits are largely circular.
Tumblr media
now, tynamo i'm a bit split on whether it more closely resembles eel larvae (leptocephalus) or lamprey larvae (ammocoetes).
Tumblr media
(photo via brian mccauley)
Tumblr media
in case you didn't know, fish have larval stages! they're tiny and often weird and transparent looking. both ammoecoetes and leptocephali feed on tiny particles floating through the water (suspension feeding). i think with their white color and transparentish look, tynamo more resemble the leptocephali, but obviously with an ammocoete's jawless always-open mouth.
Tumblr media
not relevant for our lamprey/eel discussion, but this is the larval form of the giant ocean sunfish, aka the mola mola. fucking look at it
also, a note! in addition to lampreys, the line obviously is a play on electric eels.
electric eels............are not eels.
eels are everything within the group anguilliformes. they're a big diverse group of mostly long and snake-looking fishes. this is an african conger, it's one of the prettiest eels in my opinion.
Tumblr media
electric eels, despite the name, are indeed not eels. they're part of the gymnotiformes instead, the south american knife fish. all members of this group use electricty as a sense- they use weak electric fields kind of like an analogue to a bat's echolocation, to navigate and find food. only one genus within this group, Electrophorus, can actually shock stuff. the three species within that genus are the electric eels!

they're funny looking guys. anyways, uh, pokemon or whatever

For anyone who buys Lunchables (or anything similar), they found high levels of lead, cadmium, and sodium in them.
Tumblr media
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Consumer Reports called on the Department of Agriculture today to remove Lunchables food kits from the National School Lunch Program. CR recently compared the nutritional profiles of two Lunchable kits served in schools and found they have even higher levels of sodium than the kits consumers can buy in the store. CR also tested 12 store-bought versions of Lunchables and similar kits and found several contained relatively high levels of lead and cadmium. All but one also tested positive for phthalates, chemicals found in plastic that have been linked to reproductive problems, diabetes, and certain cancers.
“Lunchables are not a healthy option for kids and shouldn’t be allowed on the menu as part of the National School Lunch Program,” said Brian Ronholm, director of food policy at Consumer Reports, which launched a petition to the USDA. “The Lunchables and similar lunch kits we tested contain concerning levels of sodium and harmful chemicals that can lead to serious health problems over time. The USDA should remove Lunchables from the National School Lunch Program and ensure that kids in schools have healthier options.”
The USDA currently allows two Lunchables kits — Turkey & Cheddar Cracker Stackers and Extra Cheesy Pizza — to be served to nearly 30 million children through the National School Lunch Program. To meet the program’s requirements, Kraft Heinz added more whole grains to the crackers and more protein to the Lunchable kits designed for schools compared to store-bought versions.
CR tested store-bought Lunchables and similar kits from Armour LunchMakers, Good & Gather, Greenfield Natural Meat Co., and Oscar Mayer and found lead, cadmium, or both in all. Lead and cadmium can cause developmental problems in children over time, even in small amounts. While none of the kits exceeded any federal limit, five of the 12 tested products would expose someone to 50 percent or more of California’s maximum allowable level for lead or cadmium – currently the most protective standard.
CR also detected at least one type of phthalate in every kit it tested, except for Lunchables Extra Cheesy Pizza. Phthalates are known endocrine disruptors, compounds that may mimic or interfere with hormones in the body, which can contribute to an increased risk of reproductive problems, obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and certain cancers. As with heavy metals, the goal should be to keep exposure as low as possible.
The sodium levels in the store-bought lunch and snack kits CR tested ranged from 460 to 740 milligrams per serving, that’s nearly a quarter to half of a child’s daily recommended limit for sodium. CR found that the sodium levels of the Lunchables made for schools, which had a larger portion of meat, are higher than in the store-bought versions. The school version of the Turkey and Cheddar Lunchable for schools contained 930 mg of sodium compared to 740 mg in the store-bought version. Similarly, the Lunchable pizza kit for schools had 700 mg of sodium compared to 510 mg in the store version.
Eating foods with too much sodium can lead to high blood pressure and lead to hypertension, which is a risk factor for heart disease, stroke, and kidney damage. Kids with high sodium intakes are about 40 percent more likely to develop hypertension than those who have low sodium diets.

Now that I am sober I can try to post coherently about The Taking of Pelham 123 (emphasis on “try”):
-What a flabbergasting experience! There was like 35% of a flawless movie in there! Moments of superlative genius bookended by batshit nonsense. It was remarkable. I will absolutely watch it again.
-I read a review that described the actors’ performances as “behaved, rather than evoked,” which is intended as a slight but is actually the reason I found Travolta’s portrayal of Ryder, in particular, to be so interesting. Like it’s almost a transgressive interpretation of the Hollywood Sociopath in that it comes disturbingly close to the real thing (i.e., Actual Sociopaths). There’s none of the glamour, charisma, ambivalence, or intrigue that comes through with a character like Hannibal Lecter, for instance. It is trying for camp, but lands in the uncanny valley of camp. You do not doubt for an instant that this guy will put a bullet in the brain of the guy he says he likes, and feel absolutely nothing about it. To say that he “likes” something is to say that he finds it momentarily interesting. He does not have any sincere emotional connections to speak of, nor is he even vaguely tantalized by the prospect of them (e.g., a Vincent [No Surname] or Neil McCauley). Evil is banal, hollow, vicious, and financially motivated. More than anything, it is unimaginative.
-Featuring: Every New York Type of Guy. I want to say this movie would have benefited from more women, but I’m not actually convinced Brian Helgeland knows how to write them.
-The first act is so good that I almost want to forgive everything that comes after it. Ryder forcing Garber to confess to the bribe is HARROWING. S-Tier Pure Cinema. What they do with John Turturro’s character is low key brilliant: they take a guy who could be a cardboard cutout caricature for Denzel Washington to play off of, just another bureaucratic asshole, but the movie makes it very clear that he’s just another competent dude trying to do his job. Having him fuck up, instantly regret it, and spend the rest of the movie developing a real camaraderie with the guy he brushed off is a great mini-arc.
-On that note: Very Catholic movie. Love it. To sin is expected, it is your default state; to confess is the catalyst for the authentic redemptive urge.
-Kudos to the sound designers, mixers, and editors who transformed one of the most singularly familiar and frankly iconic New York Sounds — Subway Train Moving Through Tunnel — into an eerie harbinger of catastrophe. When they get the car moving again, the noise is unsettling.
-You know how you know this guy sucks? He’s from Jersey.
-[Subway Platform] Me: [chanting] trains, trains— Other people across the platform: trains, TRAINS MTA conductor: [incomprehensible, over intercom] TRAINS, TRAINS, TRAINS!

who is your dream cast for kendall’s boy squiggle? mine is weird al. or mccauley culkin.
macauley culkin... i would give everything for squiggle to be him. my other favorite for the role would be bob odenkirk. i'd also like if it turned out that kendall's boy squiggle was actually mr. brian succession of training program fame.

that episode was I am going to say probably the best out of the whole series so far. The creepiness of that scene. Such a plottwist to think it was the guy at the garage. IT almost reminds me of the girl in the wall episode and the benders one in the sense that I love the action and the twists - Jeff T Thomas, Ryan O'Nan, Dominique Arrianne Holmes, Brian McCauley Johnson and Benjy Steinberg I hope you collaborate again for future episodes <3
agreed! it really was such a strong episode! the best of the season so far. looking back there was so much going on that it should have felt jumbled and messy, but it didn't. it was easy to follow, engaging, the pacing was intense but not too intense, the horror notes and twists in the beau and jenny plot were enough to spike your adrenaline but weren't overdone, the escalation of the season long arc is moving steadily....
there are a lot of ensemble shows that totally fumble the bag, but this one seems to be working. it's still early on in the season but i think it seems safe to say that so far the hail mary soft reboot of big sky has been a success. hopefully they can keep it up!

Taron Egerton in “Black Bird,” premiering globally July 8, 2022 on Apple TV+.
Hulu movies and shows to stream this week (June 13) by Sandy C.
What is the series Black Bird on Apple TV+ about? by Aysha Ashley Househ
Fans of psychological thrillers will be happy to know a new series is coming to Apple TV+ next month. Black Bird is based on the true crime memoir, In with the Devil: A Fallen Hero, a Serial Killer, and a Dangerous Bargain for Redemption, by authors James Keene and Hillel Levin.
Inspired by true events, the story follows Jimmy Keene. He is the son of a high school football hero and decorated policeman, Big Jim Keene. When Jimmy is sentenced to 10 years in a minimum security prison he gets offered a choice – enter a maximum security prison for the criminally insane to befriend suspected serial killer Larry Hall, or stay where he is to serve his sentence with no parole. Jimmy needs to get a confession out of Larry on where he hid the bodies of several young girls before his appeal goes through. But is the suspected killer telling the truth or just making up a tale?
The upcoming drama is developed, written, and executive produced by Dennis Lehane. The book’s author, James Keene, also serves as an executive producer alongside series lead, Taron Egerton. The limited series has a total of six episodes, with the first two premiering July 8.
Black Bird certainly sounds interesting! And it’s the actors who bring a production to life. So who are the stars of the show?
Black Bird cast
Taron Egerton as Jimmy Keene
Ray Liotta as Big Jim Keene, Jimmy’s father
Paul Walter Hauser as Larry Hall, suspected serial killer
Greg Kinnear as Brian Miller
Sepideh Moafi as Lauren McCauley
Portraying Big Jim Keene was Liotta’s last television role before the actor passed away. He died in his sleep on May 26, 2022 at the age of 67. He is best known for his work in the films Goodfellas and Field of Dreams.
youtube
Black Bird premieres with the first two episodes on July 8 on Apple TV+, followed by one new episode weekly every Friday through Aug. 5.

In a first for the crypto industry, Visa-backed Anchorage gets a federal bank charter
A startup called Anchorage announced on Wednesday that it has become the first cryptocurrency company to receive a federal charter from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. Wonky and technical as it sounds, the news is a significant milestone for the burgeoning crypto industry, since it provides a legal green light for big banks and other traditional financial companies to use Anchorage…
