BookXcess stores can be found all across the southern Malay Peninsula, from Penang to Singapore, but it’s no cookie-cutter chain all of whose branches look the same. On the contrary, it aims to make each of the locations feel different and unique—a fantastic destination for all book lovers.
The RexKL location that opened in late November 2021 particularly stands out among these. More of a creative art center than a shopping mall, RexKL is housed in a repurposed movie theater originally built in 1947. Once an icon of Kuala Lumpur’s Chinatown, the single-screen cinema with a capacity of 1000 went through numerous fires, first in 1972 and then in 2002, after which the theater went defunct.
A few years later, the former Rex Cinema building was used as a backpackers’ hostel and a karaoke joint until another fire broke out in 2007. It stood all but abandoned for a while, but it was not long before a new project was formed to bring the old Rex Cinema back to life. Reincarnated as a cultural hub, RexKL is home to numerous stores, restaurants, a music venue, and the BookXcess on the second floor, right where the old cinema's seating area once was.
Shelf after shelf of books cover the concrete walls. Graffiti murals decorate what walls aren't stacked with books. As you delve deeper into this bibliophilic labyrinth, you will find a staircase leading to the upper level, which used to be the first-class seating area. From there, you can take a peek at the concert stage below, often delivering vibrant live music through rehearsals, an unusual but stimulating bonus to the book haven.

I started reading The Other Miss Bridgerton because BookXcess didn't have the mainline bridgerton books and I'm gonna be real it's a lil better than the main series because Julia Quinn really like, hones her abilities as a writer after the main series is done. but this comes with the side effect of me being fully and entirely obsessed with Poppy Bridgerton, THEIR DEAD FATHER'S COUSIN who doesn't even show up in the TV show and never will.

Kampar trip 7-9 September,23
We drove up right after picking Grace up from school and picking up Lisa. Half way up Lisa took over the wheel and drove to her friend’s place. She was going to Kota Kinabalu the following day.
We arrived in Kampar at about 6.30pm and checked in to Kampar Boutique Hotel. Then we met up with Xin Yun and Cheryl for dinner, where we enjoyed very appetising clay pot dishes like clay pot eggplant, tofu and chicken.
The following morning, we picked Cheryl up from UTAR after her lecture in the morning and headed for Ipoh. Xin Yun couldn’t join us because she had a test.
We took the trunk road to Ipoh, chatting and munching grapes on the way. When we arrived, we had a hard time getting a parking lot. I think we only found one after 30 minutes. The first thing we did was stroll along Concubine Lane, which was lined with little dessert stalls and souvenir shops. Then we were delighted to find a BookXcess bookstore and bought some books. For lunch we walked to Nam Heong, a crowded but fast-serving coffee shop which sold noodles and egg tarts. Then we bought bread at another shop, because it was quite cheap.
After that, we bought some local biscuits a few doors from Ho Yan Hor Museum which we could only visit at 3.30pm. So we drove to Chang Jiang Coffee Shop for white coffee and headed back again to the museum. It was a very inspiring and eye-opening visit. We learnt about the enterprising businessman Ho Kai Cheong who started Ho Yan Hor, selling herbal tea to the community. A committed Christian, his business thrived and expanded throughout Malaysia and abroad. Today his eldest son helms the company under the Hovid brand.
At the end of the tour, we tasted all four varieties of herbal tea and bought some too. We drove back to Kampar in the rain, dropped by Xin Yun’s place and had dinner together. The portions were so big we couldn’t finish the food. All the dishes were good except the squid which was rubbery.
On the last day, Leslie suggested we visit the Kinta Tin Mining Museum so that we at least do some sightseeing here. When we arrived, serendipitously there was a kids’ day museum event. Grace had been pining to do some art and craft throughout our trip and her wish came true!! The museum curators who are also artists, explained the history and process of tin mining followed by the story of the elephant Larut, from which the tin mining town of Larut got its name. After that, they made elephant origami and their own unique thermoplastic elephant keychain. They stencilled, coloured and baked the plastic. They did the artwork for about two hours. These artists are really passionate about their work.
We drove back to Muar only after 2pm. It rained almost all the way and traffic was heavy, so we only arrived home at about 9.30pm.

Bright and sunny morning. Dressed in light cottons and beat up T-D auto on a comfy retro leather band I had spare. May go to the flea market with my cousin after lunch at the patisserie. We’ll do BookXcess and maybe Jane’s Cottage Soaps then I’m not sure what. My memory really is failing in middle age.
I may get a nicer velcro strap for my Aqualand if possible. No pressure, since I have actively stopped collecting watches.
Change of plan, my cousin is coming over to my place before lunch. Maybe we can do some songwriting, listen to Mozart, and discuss books and watches. Then we’ll send him all the way home to his condo with the dapao stuff from Chole.co.

Journal Entry: 12 June 2023
4:12 PM
I haven’t cried since Friday. But I cried on Friday night because of Queen Charlotte the Netflix series, the final episode’s ending scene was just so heartwarming. I’ve been triggered like that from time to time.
I wouldn’t say that I am completely okay now, but I do see some progress, and I know that progress is not linear and I can go up and down, but today as of this moment I am okay and I am optimistic. I am looking forward to a lot of things, although tomorrow is never guaranteed but it helps to look forward to things, at least for me.
It’s not even huge things sometimes, this week I am looking forward to the lunches I am having with my ex colleagues, and then I am seeing Jasmine on Sunday. I’m also not beating myself up for not being “productive”, I just do what I can and be gentler to myself. I am however trying to focus more on improving my diet and physical activity, especially now that I’ve had covid twice, I need to work extra to maintain my health, not just maintain but also improve my health.
I wanted to plan some personal time for my birthday, I haven’t thought of anything yet, I haven’t decided on whether I want company or I wanted to be alone. I just want a change of scenery.
I really enjoyed my alone time last Saturday, after dropping off my car at the service centre I head to Starling and bought an astrology book at BookXcess, I then proceeded to the book cafe and had breakfast while reading a book and listening to music. It feels so good, I haven’t felt that in awhile.
The contentment you get from being around people you love versus the contentment you get from being alone are totally different. It felt slightly like cosplaying when I first do it, but eventually it just feels so satisfying. I am planning to have some quality alone time this Saturday as well.
We’ll see!
