Our first term has been very busy, here’s a look at what our second year fashionistas @barnsley_college have been working on for #liveproject #bodybeautiful #diversityonthecatwalk project. This is the second year running we have worked with the @civicbarnsley taking inspiration from the Body Beautiful, diversity on the catwalk exhibition curated by Georgina Ripley. SHEFFIELD HALLAM WORKSHOP

Today we attended the Sheffield Hallam fashion portfolio building workshop. Sheffield Hallam hasn’t being one of my current university’s of interest however it was interesting to look around and get to know the tutors.

The tutor Paul had so much valuable experience and interesting life story’s and I really enjoyed hearing about this. I also enjoyed browsing the past students work and they seemed to be at a really high standard and very well done. However non of the day really was about portfolio building and it was more of the tutors trying to convince us to go there. One thing that put me off was how run down the building was and I jsut didn’t feel as though the building had a nice atmosphere, however neither does Sheffield in general. When we did see something regarding portfolios, I was quite surprised by the standard of portfolio we were being shown as I expected it to be at a much higher standard, the tutor himself said that it wasn’t one of the best ones so I was confused as to why we weren’t being shown the better ones to motivate us more and to make us want to match that etc rather then being given somewhat of a bottom line to meet. Overall I was still really interested in the course we learnt about and will be looking into it further as it isn’t something I have previously being interested in.

CSM OPEN DAY:

Today I attended the UAL: Central Saint Martins open day, following my thoughts on LCF, my expectations were somewhat lowered after having being extremely high. Immediately when reaching the CSM campus I could clearly see the difference in standard as the whole university had a much nicer area surrounding it with greenery and a large outdoor space, the building was extremely impressive and had a very nice feel to it. Already I was much more impressed, however after heading up to the talk for my desired course, ‘cultures, criticism and curation’ I was again dissatisfied. The actual tutor himself was very interesting to listen to and really promoted himself and the course well, except the course being promoted wasn’t what it was advertised as online. Therefore we decided to leave mid way through the talk and look around further to see if anyone could help us learn about other courses, this is where we ran into some issues. After approaching several ‘happy to help’ guides we had not achieved anything, non of which knowing anything regarding many of the courses and seemed as though they had no time to speak to us. After having no luck we approached the ‘fashion programs’ desk where we were left waiting for 30+ minutes until a student came to spoke to us, I asked her about the fashion communications course which she told me she did herself, yet when I asked for information on it she laughed and said she didn’t know and to maybe look in the library…. The library was shut.

When walking around we browsed the students portfolios and sketchbooks, I was again slightly disappointed as they didn’t seem to be at that high of a standard and I had extremely high expectations for this university. After this we approached another student who then took us to look around some of the sewing, textile rooms etc, while this was interesting and helpful in regards to class sizes and applications etc, it was nothing to do with my courses of interest and we ended up leaving with no more information then we arrived with.

Overall, I have got the impression that UAL university’s pride theirselves on the name they are branded with rather then the actual work they produce, which is confusing as I have certainly seen masterpieces come from these universities therefore why were they not shown today?
