Yacht Electrical Systems Maintenance for Keeping your Yacht Alive
Tumblr media
Although megayacht owners and yacht engineers may be knowledgeable, they are not licensed to work as the ship's electricians. Owners frequently hire yacht repair firms to handle work on their electrical systems.
A detailed knowledge of the vessel's electrical systems enables the yacht repair and maintenance business to identify and address minor faults before they become more serious ones. Therefore, regular preventative maintenance of the yacht's electrical systems will keep it operating at its best.
Regular equipment inspections, even if there are no visible indicators of malfunction or wear and tear, are part of preventive maintenance. Vulnerabilities in systems, materials, and equipment are also taken into account. The technical and mechanical staff aboard yachts schedule routine maintenance tasks to prevent costly damages. They have a good maintenance schedule in place as well.
In particular, the following systems are focused upon for preventive maintenance:
Alarms, monitoring systems
Lights, lighting systems
Circuit breakers, switchboards
Generators, motors

1937 Hong Kong Clipper - Stan Stokes
The Glen L. Martin Company had a long history as a designer and manufacturer of successful flying boats. The company had developed several different flying boats for the Navy, including the PM the P3M and the XP2M. However, when the company began considering the development of a large commercial flying boat for Pan Am, there was considerable internal controversy. The Great Depression was underway and many aircraft manufacturers were going bankrupt. Glenn Martin insisted that the company proceed, and lie was highly motivated to show the world that his organization could design and produce the finest flying boat ever built. The end product of their efforts was the M-130. Credit for its design is shared with Martins Chief Engineer (L.C. Milburn), the Project Engineer (L.D. McCarthy), test pilot (WX. Ebel), and Pail Ams Chief Engineer (Andre Priester.) The first of the three MA 3 Os was the China Clipper. It made its maiden flight on December 30, 1934. The M- 130 had a wingspan of 130 feet, a gross weight of 5 1,000 pounds, and was initially powered by four Twin Wasp radials generating 830-HP each. (In 1938 more powerful engines and automatically adjustable pitch props were refitted onto all three M-130s.) The M-130 had a capacity of 32 passengers, and were equipped with 18 sleeping births. They were flown by a crew of eight professionals. The practical range of the aircraft with a normal load was about 3000-miles, which at a typical cruising speed of 130-MPH implied an endurance of almost 24 hours in the air. One unique design feature of the M-130 was the use of sponsons, or water wings, which actually helped the aircraft lift off from the water. The three M-130s were christened the China, Hawaii and Philippine Clippers by Pan Am. The China Clipper was accepted by Pan Am in October of 1935. In November this aircraft flew from Alameda, California to Manila in the Philippines; completing the 8,200 mile journey with a total flight time of 59 hours and 48 minutes. It arrived in Manila only two minutes behind its scheduled arrival time. The Philippine Clipper entered service next and was used for survey flights to map the Manila to Hong Kong route. The Hawaii Clipper entered service in October of 1936. This aircraft, unfortunately was lost during a flight in 1938 from Guarn to Manila, and its fate is unknown. The Philippine Clipper was lost in 1943 on a flight from Hawaii to San Francisco. Lost in bad weather the plane hit a mountain northwest of the city. The China Clipper was utilized by the US Navy during the War, and was returned to Pan AM in late 1943. For the next year it flew the route from Miami to Africa. On the night of January 18, 1945 the China Clipper crashed while attempting a landing in Trinidad. At the time of this tragedy the aircraft had successfully flown more than three million miles. In Stan Stokes painting the China Clipper takes off from Hong Kongs busy harbor in the late 1930s. The China Clipper may be the best known and most-loved commercial aircraft in history. It signalled the beginning of long distance commercial airline service, which by revolutionizing international passenger travel and mail delivery, made the Earth a rnuch smaller place for all of its inhabitants

SS Sir Walter Scott (digging through the archive)
Digging through the archive: Steamboat SS Sir Walter Scott at Loch Katrine. Trip to Scotland, late April 2019.
Steamboat Sir Walter Scott measures 115 gross register tons, is 110 feet (34 metres) long and has a 19-foot (5.8-metre) beam. She is powered by the original three-cylinder triple-expansion steam engine made by Matthew Paul & Company, Dumbarton, and has two locomotive-type boilers which until the end of 2007 were fired by solid fuel fed into the firebox by a stoker. In a refit at the end of the 2007 season, the boilers were altered to run on biofuel. During this refit, the superstructure was rebuilt and a forward deck cabin was added. The vessel has a crew of five. Read more about the boat on Wikipedia.
Loch Katrine (Gaelic: Loch Ceiteirein or Loch Ceathairne) is a freshwater loch in the Trossachs area of the Scottish Highlands, east of Loch Lomond, within the historic county and registration county of Perthshire and the contemporary district of Stirling. Differences Between Boat Delivery and Yacht Shipping
The costs associated with yacht shipping depend on both its size and length of voyage, from short coastal deliveries for service or refit purposes all the way through international deliveries with thousands of miles between. A professional delivery company should provide you with a detailed quote that covers fixed expenses in addition to an estimate for variable expenses at the end of your voyage as well as monitoring all expenses so there will be no unexpected bills upon return. They should also track expenditures so there won't be any unexpected bills coming due.
Finding a captain to lead your delivery requires careful consideration and research. A reputable delivery company will conduct thorough vetting checks on potential crew members to make sure that they possess all of the qualifications required for this task, thus decreasing any risks of hiring inexperienced crew members while helping ensure both a safe and enjoyable journey for you and your yacht.
Tumblr media
Your skipper will conduct a detailed inspection of your boat prior to embarking on any delivery, making recommendations regarding safety and reliability, cleaning up, and general tidying up as part of this inspection process.
Before embarking on any delivery journey, it is wise to enlist the services of a professional mechanic for an inspection and service of engine and systems. At this time, this provides an ideal opportunity to make sure everything is in working order, with enough spare parts onboard for the journey - including wrenches (standard and metric), assorted hose clamps, tapered wood plugs, duct tape, spare fuel filters, hacksaw blades (if available), spare anchor line (and fire extinguishers if required).

"Sabotage Hinted in Sinking," Windsor Star. July 7, 1943. Page 11. ---- Icebreaker Went Down At Montreal ---- Quite Possible Sea-Cocks Opened by Enemy Hands, States Official ==== MONTREAL, July 7 - The government icebreaker Lady Grey sank at her dock in the yards of Canadian Vickers Limited here July 1, when an overhauling and refitting job that was to prepare her for additional duty had been practically completed.
Censorship had prevented publication of details of the sudden sinking until last night.
No lives were lost in the sinking. Two watchmen who were aboard the ship when she started to list away from the dock early last Wednesday morning were ordered ashore by a supervisor when the list became dangerous. The vessel listed far over on her side and then plunged down into 30 feet of water of the St. Lawrence River.
SABOTAGE POSSIBLE T. R. McLagan, Vickers general manager, declared the sinking "could be sabotage. It is quite possible that sea-cocks were opened by enemy hands."
He added "there also remains the possibility, of course that a water valve may have broken, but this seems remote."
Mr. McLagan explained that the ship's fuel and water tanks as well as other equipment had been fully tested on the previous day and that the re-built ship was in "perfect floating condition" at that time.
He explained further that the ship was not built to naval specifications and had no water-tight compartments which could have been used to isolate the intake of water and keep the ship afloat.
"There was more than adequate protection against sabotage," Mr. McLagan stated. "There were the watchmen, our company fire patrol and three guards of the Veterans Company of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
"We have lists and full data of all the men who worked on the ship and the investigation of the cause of the accident should soon allow us to ascertain if enemy hands were responsible."
TO BE RAISED Company officials said the 37-year-old ship would be raised and that it was not anticipated damage would be excessive. She had been undergoing repairs for more than a month, but use to which she was to have been put when the work was completed was not announced officially.
One official said, however, that she was slated for "special duty in the western Atlantic." Only a two-foot tip of mast showed where the Lady Grey had gone down. The slant of the mast showed, however, that she had not settled evenly but had retained her list as she filled and lunged sideways to the floor of the river.
The 733-ton ship, built at Barrow by Vickers of England, had been in use for years as a government supply ship and icebreaker largely in the St. Lawrence and Gulf of St. Lawrence areas.
BOAT REFITTED Boiler-workers had been putting the finishing touches to their part of the refitting job on the night shift a few hours before she sank. They said that all had seemed normal aboard the twin-screw vessel when they completed their work, leaving only painting and incidental repair work to be completed before she was ready for sea.
Navy officials declined comment on the sinking, while officials of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said that reports of their investigation had not yet been received. R.C.M.P. constables were placed in charge of the dock after the sinking, and everyone including Vickers employes, was barred from that side of the dock while the investigation was underway.
Vickers officials estimated it would be several weeks before the Lady Grey could be raised and repaired. She was 172 feet long, with a breadth of 32 feet and a depth of 15 feet.

Lyman-Morse LM46 makes Cover of Cruising World, Jan/Feb '23

Lyman-Morse LM46 makes cover of Cruising World, Jan/Feb '23.
In ideal conditions on Chesapeake Bay, a taut fleet of 17 contestants vied for top honors in the 2023 edition of Cruising World’s annual Boat of the Year competition. When the spray had settled, at the top of the leader board was a pair of yachts destined for blue water and beyond: the Lyman-Morse LM46, the Domestic Boat of the Year, and the Hallberg-Rassy 400, the Import Boat of the Year.

DOMESTIC BOAT OF THE YEAR
“Cold-molded construction, top- notch systems, a powerful sail plan and an interior that is practical and lovely at once. Wow! The LM46 is a heck of a boat. Purpose- built for an experienced owner, for sure, but in terms of a pure sailing machine, the 46 was the standout boat in this year’s lineup of new
models.” —Mark Pillsbury
WINNER
Lyman-Morse 46
LM46
Drew Lyman, president of Lyman-Morse Boatbuilding Company—the estimable midcoast Maine semicustom builder—knows a thing or two about cruising boats. After all, his father, Cabot, founded the firm in the late 1970s, and several years later, circumnavigated with his family on a Sparkman & Stephens-designed Sequin 49 produced in his yard called Chewink, with Drew aboard for significant legs of the journey. When Drew required a boat for a similar rite of passage with his own family, at first he was drawn to the notion of a cruising catamaran. But when push came to shove, he decided to move forward with a monohull.
That yacht is the Lyman-Morse LM46, a striking performance cruiser from New Zealander naval architect Kevin Dibley, who created a light, fast sailboat that’s both strong and sleek. Lyman added his own personal touches, including many features that he borrowed from legendary skipper Stan Honey, whose Cal 40 took overall honors in this past summer’s Newport Bermuda Race after a refit at—where else?—Lyman-Morse.
Our judging panel was thunderstruck by both the formidable sailing prowess and the exacting level of execution, and unanimously awarded it the title of Domestic Boat of the Year.

USCG Satisfaction of Mortgage Scenarios You May Find Yourself In
If you own a boat in the United States, you should know the requirements of a USCG satisfaction of mortgage. Because you never know when you can end yourself in a sticky position, it’s always wise to be ready for everything. Getting a mortgage is essential when purchasing a boat. If you buy your ideal boat, the last thing you want is to have it taken away from you if you can’t keep up with the payments. But mortgages may be complicated and hard to grasp, particularly when choosing the best alternative for one’s circumstances.
This article will discuss three mortgage situations that may arise for US boat owners and advise how to make the most of your loan. Do you know that a mortgage is used to fund more than half of all USCG vessels? It’s crucial to know what you’re getting into when it comes time to pay off your mortgage, whether you’ve recently gotten a loan or are getting close to the end of your term. The following are some typical situations that may arise when USCG vessel owners want to pay off their mortgage:
You’ve paid off Your Boat but Still, Have a Balance on Your Mortgage. This is the norm for new boat owners in the USCG. In the first few years following a purchase or refit, the value of many boats drops significantly, meaning that owners frequently spend more money on maintenance and upkeep than they make. You may still owe your mortgage even if you’ve paid off your yacht. First, you’ll need to convince your lender to convert the remaining balance of your loan into an interest-only product.
This ensures that the whole amount is paid off before the due date. Second, once you reach this stage, you need to ensure you never fall behind on your payments; doing so might result in your lender calling in your loan and taking back your boat. If you keep up with your payments, the lender will keep up with theirs, so you don’t have to worry. After all, the time they will get their repayment is also set in stone: the moment the loan is paid in full.
You’ve Moved but Still, Have A Balance On Your USCG Satisfaction Of Mortgage. If you have moved but still owe money on your mortgage, provide the mortgage company with your new mailing address so that they may send you invoices and statements. You simply contact them by phone or email to inform them of the change. You know the mortgage servicer needs to know your new location to update their records and send you future payments and statements when you move from one property to another. Similarly, you would assume that the post office will automatically update its records when you move.
However, many individuals fail to realize this is true when moving to their main house. Like when you move, the mortgage service wants specifics so they can update their files (and more importantly, they know where to send your monthly statement). Even if you’ve sold the property and moved out, you still owe money on it if you haven’t paid off your USCG satisfaction or mortgage.
Another Company has bought Out your Lender. It’s natural to be confused by this, but know that lenders rarely change rates or conditions without first contacting borrowers. The bank that issued your mortgage if you were the owner of a USCG vessel may have been acquired, leaving you in a difficult financial position. This occurs rather often. Even though your circumstances may have changed, you are still responsible for making mortgage payments and have the same choices.
All mortgage firms have similar policies regarding the penalties for falling behind on payments. The bank doesn’t care what method you use to pay them back as long as they are paid, which might mean foreclosure, repossession, or even worse. No matter what the new name of your lender is or how you may reach them, they have no intention of renegotiating the terms of your loan or making any other accommodations for you as a result of the takeover.
You’re Getting Ready to Retire but Still Have a Balance on Your Mortgage After a certain amount of time has passed during which you have been making payments on your mortgage, you are probably moving closer and closer to being debt-free. Even though this is a significant achievement that deserves to be celebrated, it may be a bit unsettling to think about how you will be able to afford the mortgage payments that need to be made each month after you have retired. Excellent news if you have previously considered what your life will be like once you retire and if your finances are stable enough to allow you to continue making those payments. You may be asking how your mortgage will be satisfied now that the USCG vessel is your main dwelling.
The United States Coast Guard provides a set of standards for your vessel’s mortgage called the Satisfaction of Mortgage. This document is often used as proof that the borrower has fulfilled their obligation to the lender. If you have any questions about these documents or want to learn more about getting a mortgage for your vessel, don’t hesitate to contact the Maritime Documentation Center at 1-800-535-8570.

Malaysia Yacht Charter Market Demand Analysis 2021-2027 [ 2023 UPDATE Available – Forecast 2023-2030*]
The global yacht charter market is experiencing remarkable growth, driven by an upswing in leisure activities and the growing popularity of outdoor vacations. Malaysia, in particular, is witnessing a surge in demand for yacht charters as more people seek unique and luxurious experiences. According to industry projections, the global yacht charter market is expected to rise at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 22.85% from 2021 to 2027.
Access Full Report: https://www.fairfieldmarketresearch.com/report/yacht-charter-market
Tumblr media
Yacht charters provide an unparalleled vacation experience that rivals that of a five-star hotel. With the ability to visit multiple locations in one trip and the convenience of onboard amenities, chartering a yacht eliminates the inconveniences associated with road or air travel. One of the unique selling points of yacht charters is the opportunity to dine in the picturesque surroundings of secluded bays and alcoves, offering a truly unforgettable experience.
The growing demand for yacht charters can be attributed to the commodification of luxury and the influence of social media. Service providers in the global yacht charter market are investing in creating high-end experiences for events such as birthdays and weekend getaways, attracting a younger demographic seeking to celebrate and gain unique experiences. Furthermore, government initiatives to encourage tourism, such as the refurbishment of marine tourism policies, are expected to stimulate the demand for yacht charters.
Despite the market's growth potential, the high cost associated with rentals and yacht maintenance remains a challenge. Rental costs reflect the expenses incurred in maintaining yachts, including routine refittings, engine and propulsion maintenance, which can amount to 10% of the yacht's value each year.
In terms of yacht types, motor yachts are expected to dominate the global yacht charter market. Their ability to cover larger distances in less time and navigate through shallow and narrow passages makes them highly sought after. Motor yachts also offer larger deck spaces and modern conveniences, which further propel their adoption.
Europe currently holds the largest share of the global yacht charter market, with a market share of nearly 48% in 2020. Countries such as Italy and Turkey are driving Europe's dominance, with an increasing number of tourists and a thriving yacht charter industry. However, Asia Pacific is expected to show significant growth in the coming years, driven by the rising number of high-net-worth individuals and increasing water activities, particularly in Southeast Asian countries.
The key players in the yacht charter market are continuously adapting their strategies to stay ahead. Collaborations, partnerships, joint ventures, mergers, and acquisitions are common strategies employed by industry players to drive growth and expand their market reach.
Some of the leading companies operating in the global yacht charter market include Fraser Yacht, Charter Yachts Australia, Boatbound Inc., CharterWorld LLP, Mertello Fairline Yacht, Thai Charters, Dream Yacht Charter, Incrediblue Ltd., Burgess, Boat International Media Ltd., Yachtico, Inc., Inter Yacht Charter, Nicholson Yachts, Simpson Marine, Northrop & Johnson, Sailing Thailand Island Cruises Co., Ltd., Yachting Company, Super Yacht Logistics, LLC., Yacht Charter Fleet, West Coast Marine Yacht Service Pvt Ltd., and Zizooboats GmbH.
As the global yacht charter market continues to flourish, Malaysia is set to capitalize on the growing fondness for sailing vacations, providing unparalleled experiences to those seeking luxury and adventure.
