Yacht Electrical Systems Maintenance for Keeping your Yacht Alive
Tumblr media
Although megayacht owners and yacht engineers may be knowledgeable, they are not licensed to work as the ship's electricians. Owners frequently hire yacht repair firms to handle work on their electrical systems.
A detailed knowledge of the vessel's electrical systems enables the yacht repair and maintenance business to identify and address minor faults before they become more serious ones. Therefore, regular preventative maintenance of the yacht's electrical systems will keep it operating at its best.
Regular equipment inspections, even if there are no visible indicators of malfunction or wear and tear, are part of preventive maintenance. Vulnerabilities in systems, materials, and equipment are also taken into account. The technical and mechanical staff aboard yachts schedule routine maintenance tasks to prevent costly damages. They have a good maintenance schedule in place as well.
In particular, the following systems are focused upon for preventive maintenance:
Alarms, monitoring systems
Lights, lighting systems
Circuit breakers, switchboards
Generators, motors

Destination Delights & Regional Updates
Destination Delights & Regional Updates
We caught up with the Captain of Cloudbreak to discover the ultimate destinations of the Mediterranean this summer, shone the Marina Spotlight on Abu Dhabi's Yas Marina, and looked at some of the hot-off-the-press launches and announcements to come out of the industry this week...
With Summer slowly approaching, the welcome respite of a season under the sun calls for the ultimate run down of charter destinations.  As trends in luxury travel come and go, the Mediterranean remains the hub of luxury, adventure and discovery. Thus, we spoke with Cpt. Jim of Cloudbreak to find out what's on the agenda for a Summer in the Med. The Captain told us this was “a very difficult question to answer as there are many lovely spots to choose from.” High on his list though were the culture, history and beach-binding destinations of The Ionian Islands, Croatia and Venice, favored for their quiet anchorages and delicate afternoon breeze. Read more to explore the best of the region.
In a less assuming and magically undiscovered corner of the world is Abu Dhabi, the luxury hub of the UAE. Commanding the region as a hub of luxury, world-class service and alternative activities, beckoning beach days merge with private desert safaris and show-stopping cuisines that take Arabian favourites and serve an international twist. The place to dock? Yas Marina, our spotlight this week. Situated on the multi-purpose leisure, shopping and entertainment center of Yas Island, Yas Marina is the nautical hub of Abu Dhabi, a vibrant venue of dining, fitness and leisure facilities.
With our destination favourites aside, news from all corner's of the globe came in. From the Netherlands; the Heesen facility in Oss has launched the long-awaited YN 18750, more commonly known as Project Aster. The Owner, who was represented by Monaco-based Arcon Yachts, has christened the brand new 50m yacht Mas, we can't wait to see her officially hit the water and set sail with her new owner.
A Feadship refit also stole the spotlight. The shipyard is embarking on a rebuild of the iconic 1954 motoryacht Istros. This ambitious project will give the 42m build a brand new aluminium superstructure which retaining the vintage elegance of her original hull, we can't wait to see the developments of such a classic and timeless vessel.
Leading brokerage Burgess also announced an exciting partnership with one of Asia’s largest yacht importation, distribution and service organisations: Boat Lagoon Yachting. The new collaboration will be dedicated to providing world class superyacht services in Thailand, proving Asia remains an exciting and evolving region within the superyacht industry.
Following on from Asia's remarkable presence was our focus on this year's Singapore Yacht Show. Simpson Marine are celebrating their 35th Anniversary in style - the international brokerage is set to be the biggest exhibitor this year. We were fortunate enough to chat with Group General Manager, Richard Allen, about Simpson’s presence at the show, which kicks off today. Part 1 and Part 2  explore what's on offer. “Our line-up for the show gets bigger and greater every year,” shares Richard - read the article to find out more.
Last but not least, Philippe Briand announced his introduction of an exciting new project to the market - 90m self-sufficient megayacht SY300. The real exciting factor? SY300 represents a milestone in the in the newly emerging ‘green’ superyacht market. She represents a break from the growing number of sailing yachts that are effectively motor yachts with sails, instead employing a design approach utilised with smaller, high-performance racing yachts.

ISA Yachts Relaunched with a Focus on Superyachts
ISA Yachts Relaunched with a Focus on Superyachts
In a new announcement from the Italian yacht builders ISA, we’ve discovered a brand-new major investment which is bringing the much-loved shipyard back to life with a new shed and a new focus.
The luxury yacht production brand of the Palumbo Group, ISA Yachts’ investment plan covers the expansion of their facilities in Ancona with a new shed dedicated to megayacht construction opening in June this year.
Now able to produce yachts up to 80-metres, Giuseppe Palumbo, CEO of ISA Yachts, is excited for the future, commenting: “This is an important project for the shipyard’s development, which will allow to build two megayachts at the same time. Market demand from owners is converging on big hulls and we want to be ready to make the most of this challenge.”
The new facility is just part of an initiative undertaken by the Palumbo Group when initially acquiring the yard in 2016. This includes introducing cutting-edge technology to aid the technique known for bringing superyachts such as Okto to the water.
“Our goal,” continues Giuseppe Palumbo, “is to strengthen our presence in the refit and maintenance market, so that after purchasing their yacht, owners can always rely on the an efficient and complete after sales service.”
The new phase for ISA Yachts is being brought forward by Palumbo Group and will relaunch the Italian shipyard into larger, and innevitably more exciting projects.

America’s First Mega-Yacht Repair And Refit Facility To Be In Florida
On Tuesday morning, the future for Ft. Pierce and St. Lucie County got even brighter. With a few signatures and handshakes all around, a new era at the Port of Ft. Pierce was ushered in. After a nearly year-long process, the County and Derecktor Shipyards signed a long-term agreement for the development and operation of a megayacht maintenance, repair and refit facility at the Port.

The new shipyard will be unique in the U.S. – the first facility designed and built specifically to accommodate power and sailing yachts in the 200 ft. plus range. Until now, these large yachts, particularly sailing vessels which require extreme overhead clearance and considerable water depth, have had few or no shipyard options in this country. Derecktor Ft. Pierce (DFP), as the new yard will be known, changes that. It provides direct access from the Atlantic through Ft. Pierce inlet, with no overhead obstructions and a maintained depth of 28ft. (8 meters). The yard itself will feature a concrete apron of over 8 acres, providing ample work and storage area, as well as over 1000 linear feet of deep water dockage. An existing large building will be refitted to house machine, wood, pipe and electrical shops along with other service support activity.
Vessel hauling will be accomplished through both a mobile lift and a drydock, giving DFP tremendous flexibility in the range of yachts it can handle. The lift is anticipated to have a 1500 ton capacity, making it the largest in the world. This, combined with the advantages of the site, will make DFP the one US yard fully capable of handling the international mega sail fleet. Plans are for the lift to be up and running by fall of 2020. The drydock, which will go into operation after the lift, is projected to be able to accommodate vessels up to 4000 tons, meaning all but a handful of the world’s largest yachts can be serviced.
“This is a big day in the history of our company”, said Paul Derecktor President of Derecktor Shipyards, after the signing. “This yard lets us bring in a whole new range of boats. It’s a new market for us and, in large part, a new market for the U.S. We see great things ahead for Derecktor, for Ft. Pierce and for the people of St. Lucie County.”
Initial plans call for infrastructure improvements to begin as soon as permits are in place. DFP will start bringing in vessels for dockside work in the very near future, with operations steadily expanding as the facility is improved.
“It’s been great to get to know the area and some of the people here while working on the agreement with the County.” said Paul Derecktor. “We can’t wait to get the yard up and running and show the yachting world what Derecktor Ft. Pierce and the Treasure Coast have to offer”.
