Alright, I have been thinking about spaceships!!
Basic premise, we don't have light speed tech so it's all within the solar system. Moons and some planets are terraformed, there are space stations, so on. I haven't designed anything with fake gravity, so the ships would need to handle gravity and zero grav in space. That's mostly fixtures though, the structure is fairly unchanged I reckon, cos it does all still need to work in gravity. Because of that, the engines are taking up a bit of space. And i've tried to leave some dead space in the ship cos i'm sure i'll come up with more scientific necessities, like I'm already thinking about constantly having to create fuel to burn to leave orbit.
Other thing, this ship has to work in three ways. One, space flight/leaving orbit stuff. Two, can park on solid ground and has a functional trade door. Three, has some way of fishing while hovering over the open ocean. That's why every ship has a "fishing" zone for the fishing part of things. They're all at the bottom of the ship, obvs.
Also, you'll probably get this from my writing the pros and cons, but this is for a romance that just happens to be set in space lol
First of all, the UFO
Basic UFO design premise. One big wide disc, on one level.
Pros: I can fuck around with the design on the one level pretty freely, and don't need to commit to shit For example, storage and rooms should def swap cos rooms can have windows then. This can have whole areas the pov character doesn't go to very easily. Open plan means secrets and privacy are harder to have, encourages drama.
Cons: The design doesn't make sense against like air drag and leaving orbit. It' so not aerodynamic. Maybe it takes off at a 90 degree angle, so like every room has a take off chair fitted to the wall cos it's gonna flip to its side. Okay, that's kinda fun, this shouldn't be in the con line anymore but whatever. It's a good example that all cons can be overcome x
Second, let's look at the Slice
Pros: Small and intimate. There's less rooms so everyones sharing a room with another shift, which gives everyone a unique friendship with one person on another shift schedule. Can't hang out in your room, so gotta see other people, encourage interaction. Tbf, I can make that happen in the other designs if I decide it's too cool to skip
Cons: also not aerodynamic. Very good in space or staying in gravity. Maybe it has another way it sorta collapses in to leave orbit, like the angle bit on the hangy downy slides up to be more like an arrow head. Yeah alright, there' another con that's become a cool pro. Actual con! Not having your own room lessens how easy it is to have sex. Although i guess the shifts undo that, cos you wouldn't want to risk waking the person who's got the room rn. Could be a fun pro as secret sex is much harder to do. Ugh
The Ball
Pros: Hysterical. Quite a bit of space. Confusing layout gives you nooks and crannies to bump into someone in a sexual tension way. Aerodynamic enough i guess? Fucking wild looking, it's just a big ol ball. I could redesign this a bit to be like a luxury yacht that's been refitted to be a fishing boat, which'd add some fun world building stuff. And some crazy down time options

‘I was not a good sailor, but I loved the week to 10 days we had on board Bloodhound . This picture illustrates her in her element and it’s a real sea. We had our roles, even if I was a bit small for most of the sails, but she had a mizzenmast astern, which was perfect for keeping us busy and out of most people’s way. You learnt to cook without realising because we shared duties. I was old enough and strong enough in the last few years to helm. She had a tiller, which was heavy, but also taught you to feel the balance better. I still don’t really understand wheels! Above all, we went to some wonderful places that we have been able to revisit in our own Rustler 44. Bloodhound has a special place in my life and, to me, this is a special picture painted by someone who had the skill to translate his own knowledge and understanding of the sea, and the individual character of a particular vessel, to canvas’
A1936 ocean-racing yacht,Bloodhound was bought in 1962 for the Royal Family at the request of The Duke of Edinburgh, who also commissioned this painting. After a refit, she was sailed by Prince Philip with Uffa Fox at that year’s Cowes Week. Until 1969, when she was sold,Bloodhound would accompany HMYBritannia on the Royal Family’s annual tour of the Western Isles. Today, she is berthed alongside the regrettably de-commissionedBritannia at Leith in Edinburgh.
It was written in an obituary of Deryck Foster: ‘Very few people in this world get to live their dream. Deryck wanted to be an artist and he made a great success out of living his dream.’ He was born in Bournemouth and learned to sail as a boy, taking his secondary education at King’s School Canterbury in Kent and Bournemouth Technical College. During the Second World War, he was a fitter in the RAF, preparing Lancaster bombers, before being posted to India.
De-mobbed, Foster attended the Central School of Arts and Crafts under the inspired principalship of William Johnstone. He then worked as a film animator and showed his marine pictures at the annual London Boat Show. In 1960, he moved with his wife and children to Yarmouth, Isle of Wight, where, as well as painting, he sailed, fished and served as a crewman on the lifeboat. He opened a gallery and sold his work there in the summer, devoting the winter to commissions.
In 1964, he was elected to the Royal Society of Marine Artists. In later life, Foster also made detailed scale models of 18th- and 19th-century ships from natural materials, which became as prized as his pictures.

A fine shipbuilders model of K/S Norge, ex. SY Philante 1937, the Norwegian Royal Yacht
Commissioned from Bassett-Lowke Ltd. following her refit in 1947. Hull of solid timber, painted white to the waterline with brass edged portlights and windows, and accommodation ladders slung outboard on both sides. Maroon below, with a broad blue boot top and twin, four blade brass propellers. Timber decks with inscribed plank lines in Indian ink. White superstructure with buff funnel and open bridge, with wheel binnacle and wing telegraphs. Fine metal detailing includes anchors, cable and windlass, ventilators, cargo derrick, radar and searchlight, guard rails and stanchions, ship's boats and launches on davits. Mounted on silvered posts in a glazed mahogany display case and bearing a brass plaque inscribed SY Philante built by Camper and Nicholson 1937 for Sir Thomas Sopwith Draft 15ft6in Length 263ft Displacement 1,600tons Beam 38ft. Royal Yacht Norge Camper and Nicholson refit 1947/8 for King Haakon of Norway. The model 65ins.(165cm)long. Also included is a framed telegram from King Haakon to Charles Nicholson, "Thank you and all your hands for excellent work refitting Norge for her new purpose" 77x20x60ins.

also on the 1990s refit, it was to cost 17 million pounds for a refit by 1997 which was estimated to extend Britannia's life by 5 years and it was felt this was the final refit that could be done to extend her life
so really not worth it for 5 years, yes made more since to hang her up and start shopping for a replacement only they had the bad luck of needing a replacement at a low for the royals, an economic low point and a fresh "Modernizing" Labour government, which while Blair and New Labour still had some socialist principles somewhere locked away in the closet.
there was some talk of a new one for the Platinum Jubilee, but it was ditched because Johnson was out and The Queen died and no one is giving Charlie a boat.
No, exactly right (and, honestly, what further grist for the commentators mills about propping up something that only has so much worth and value and energy and relevance left to it if they had gone forward with it) and the argument "there has been a royal yacht since Charles II" is also not exactly the most convincing argument to make.
Charles will just have to make do with Gloriana, the Royal Train, the Royal Bentleys, and whatever yacht he can charter otherwise (if needed).
