Hunger
"Why is it that we're more inclined to create programs to combat obesity than ones that meaningfully address hunger? Proponents of things like a soda tax hold their plans up proudly, but never talk about why soda is such a staple in homes where food insecurity is a problem. They don't talk about the fact that soda is shelf-stable, is cheaper than juice, and it tastes good. They don't consider the fact that low-income consumers don't have to worry about it going bad, about it containing mold like Caprisun products did before their most recent packaging changes, or fungicides like some orange juice brands did before the FDA increased testing. And they would never acknowledge that consumers don't have to worry about soda manufacturers facing the same risk of lead-tainted water like residents in Flint, Chicago, and so many other cities. Because those companies can and do buy the filtration systems needed for clean water in creating their products in any setting.
Instead proponents of policies like soda taxes insists it is about health and point to dubious claims that obesity is a disease that can be cured by taxing soda. [...] The hyperbolic assertions that obesity can be cured by taxing soda ignores studies published by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention that prove that numbers on a scale have very little to do with health outcomes. Politicians use fatphobia and make obesity a scapegoat to deflect the attention away from the policies that have adversely affected the health of low-income communities. Fitness is a much better measure of health and one that requires a multipronged approach, and is much more labor intensive than a tax.
[...] In the end, soda taxes have very little to do with health. It's an easy platform for politicians and their backers, but if the concern were really public health, the focus wouldn't be on aggressive taxes as a solution, nor would these counties that adopt such taxes be using money from it to fund everything but measures to bring healthy, affordable food options to low-income communities. What's more, if the aim is to lower overall sugar consumption, it hardly makes sense to target only one form of it. A can of regular soda has 39 grams of sugar, but a cup of cocoa has 49 grams of sugar. Frappucinos? Some can have as much as 102 grams of sugar. Those other options are socially acceptable, and the dairy is a source of protein and vitamins, but the amount of sugar consumed is significantly more. Socially acceptable sugar isn't healthier because it costs more than a can of Pepsi. It's clear that the concern here is less about the healthfulness of sugar and more about finding another revenue source for cash-strapped municipalities.
Soda taxes hit the people with the fewest options the hardest, because in a food desert, too often the healthy options are also the most expensive. Low-income parents already struggling with food insecurity and neighborhood violence are now being told their children's health problems, symbolized by weight, are their fault by having only hard choices available. Which option is healthiest when your choices are tap water with lead in it, bottled water that already carries an additional tax, overpriced juice, milk being sold past the sell-by date, and soda? What problems are solved by putting more tax burden on those least able to afford it? Policies that serve as food police tend to raise stigma rather than help families and individuals who need better access to food."

For Thy Great Pain Have Mercy On My Little Pain by Victoria MacKenzie
In the year of 1413, two women meet for the first time in the city of Norwich.
Margery has left her fourteen children and husband behind to make her journey. Her visions of Christ – which have long alienated her from her family and neighbours, and incurred her husband's abuse – have placed her in danger with the men of the Church, who have begun to hound her as a heretic. Julian, an anchoress, has not left Norwich, nor the cell to which she has been confined, for twenty-three years. She has told no one of her own visions – and knows that time is running out for her to do so. The two women have stories to tell one another. Stories about girlhood, motherhood, sickness, loss, doubt and belief; revelations more the powerful than the world is ready to hear. Their meeting will change everything.
Book page: https://www.bloomsbury.com/uk/for-thy-great-pain-have-mercy-on-my-little-pain-9781526647894/
My Review: There's a lot of books about historical witches and  their persecution, there's not a lot of fiction books about mystics even if their life wasn't alwasy easy and they were often persecuted. Margery Kempe and Julian of Norwich lived  in the same time, they were both mystycs but their life is very different. Julian, the anchoress who wrote a very important book like Revelations of Divine Love that is very different from the average Middle Age theology. An anchoress who lived in a small cell with a cat and a woman to help her Margery the mother of 14 children, the histrionic preacher who was arrested and tried by the Inquisition more than once an travelled to Jerusalem and all over Europe. A women who wrote the first autobiography in English This book is about them and I found it riveting and poignant. The voices of these women sound "real", similar to their voice in their books. It's not a long book but it's one that cause book-hangover as I wanted more, I didn't want to say good bye to these women and their incredible spiritual life. Two women who were able to chose a different life, women with a rich spiritual life and that strange gift call mystycism that mae them able to see what other couldn't see. It's an excellent debut and I strongly recommend it. Many thanks to Bloomsbury Publishing Plc (UK & ANZ) for this arc, all opinions are mine

Luger Pistol
The Parabellum 08, known to most as Luger, is recognised as the sidearm of the German forces during both WW1 and WW2. It was however initially adopted by the Swiss, and later by forces from all around the world, from South America to the Middle East. Designed and patented in 1898 by Georg Luger, this 9mm parabellum (9X39mm), 8 magazine, semi-automatic pistol sports balance and accuracy. With high muzzle velocity, it had, however, relatively low stopping power, creating small, clean wound on their targets. It is rather unique in that it uses a toggle joint for reloading. Accessories included but weren't limited to a shoulder stock and a 32 round, snail drum magazine.

ACADEMIC BLOG POST 5- Signs and Semiotics: Fleabag
The study of semiotics is jam-packed with jargon that makes it difficult for a beginner to grasp, so this post will be using semiotic analysis with common language. To study the semiotic is to study the meanings of symbols within media; the signifier and the signified.
Fleabag is a comedy-drama TV series following a young woman struggling with grief and her coping mechanisms for it, all while navigating complex with her family and lovers. The meat of the show, that keeps one coming back to it, is in its symbols and in its portrayal of human relationships.
Tumblr media
The Guinea Pig:
Throughout the show, the titular character Fleabag takes care of a guinea pig named Hillary, one she adopted with her best friend prior to her suicide, inadvertently caused by Fleabag herself. In almost every character save for Fleabag there is a sense of disgust or contempt for Hillary, despite her belonging to a guinea pig themed cafe. The only person who treats the creature gingerly is Fleabag's Season 2 love interest, The Priest. He cradles her and sees her in a very novel way before Fleabag physically snatches her back in a moment of feeling vulnerable. Some believe Hillary to be a symbol of Fleabag's love for her best friend, but I take it to have the latent meaning of her heart.
The camera:
One of Fleabag's unhealthy coping mechanisms is sex, as it's a way for her to feel physically loved without inviting much in the way of intimate entanglement. Her method of processing trauma is simply to displace it, and we see how it seeps through the cracks over the course of the show. Another of her coping mechanisms relies in the camera itself, a symbol that she craves because she wants an audience, a justification for acting the way she does. Inviting in the voyeur by looking into the camera allows Fleabag to dissociate from her reality and feel a sense of camaraderie with someone. She's a desperately lonely character despite her multiple sexual relationships over the show, and her relationship to the audience alienates her from the world while manufacturing a connection in her mind.
Fleabag's use of signs is masterful, and while I prefer to be more straightforward in my work, it's such an inspiration to consider its themes and latent meanings in my own practice.

Price: [price_with_discount] (as of [price_update_date] - Details) [ad_1] Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans (1927) is one of the most historically pivotal of all films. The first American film of the celebrated German director F.W. Murnau, Sunrise tells the story of a love triangle between characters named only as The Man, The Wife, and The Woman from the City. Lucy Fischer’s compelling study of the film shows how it mediates between German expressionism and American melodrama, the avantgarde and popular film, silent cinema and ‘talkies’. A lavish and sumptuous production famous for its vast, specially-constructed sets, and one of the first feature films with a synchronized musical score and sound effects soundtrack, Sunrise was one of early Hollywood's most ambitious undertakings. In her foreword to this new edition, Lucy Fischer considers the film as an abiding classic of world cinema. Speculative fiction/fantasy/sci-fi: some random titles – pt 1
This year, 2022, has been a book featuring a lot of very interesting new authors and the closure of some series I loved. For every title the link to Goodreads
How High We Go in the Dark by Sequoia Nagamatsu (Bloomsbury Publishing Plc (UK & ANZ) is a heart-wrenching, thought provoking and well written book about a world suffering by a deadly pandemia. Something worse than COVID and more ancient. There’s a lot of story of different people and at least one made me cried bucked. A mix of literary and speculative fiction
One Foot in the Fade by Luke Arnold (Orbit) This series never disappointed and I love the atmosphere that mixes noir and fantasy. I always hope there’s going to be more. It was a great series.
The Ballad of Perilous Graves by Alex Jennings (Orbit) I think this was the best debut in 2022: an exciting story set in New Orleans that I couldn’t put down. Can’t wait to read other books by this author
The Stardust Thief by Chelsea Abdullah (Orbit) A great story based on Middle East lore. Love it since the beginning and can’t wait for the next one
Locklands by Robert Jackson Bennett (Jo Fletcher Books) The last of the Foundryside saga. An epic ending to a great series
Babel by R.F. Kuang (HarperVoyager) Rebecca Kuang can develop complex plot that are both entertaining and thought provoking. Babel is historical fiction, fantasy and a critic view of colonialism.
Stringers by Panatier, Chris (Angry Robot) Silver Queendom by Dan Koboldt (Angry Robot) Demon Hunting with a Southern Sheriff by Lexi George (Kensington Books) I had a lot of fun in reading them. Highly recommended
Half a Soul by Olivia Atwater (Orbit) A lovely series that mixes Regency romance, fairy world, and fantasy. Loved it, highly entertaining
Siren Queen by Nghi Vo (Tordotcom) Nighi Vo does a great job in mixing East and West delivering intriguing story. This one was great as the rest of the series

Combining illustration with photography
Something that has been on my bucket list for quite some time was to make my art more interactive. At times I wish for more art to be more than something pretty to look at; I want my art to be playful and to encourage viewer engagement.
A Thai artist that I have been following for some time on Instagram called Jiranarong is someone I believe does this very well. He creates digital illustrations of animal characters and strategically draws them within the photograph, through his work I believe he is able to combine elements of his imagination with the real world. By encouraging the viewer to search for his characters, not only does it make his work interactive, but it also makes it playful, which is something I tend to forget in my own work as my goal the majority of the time is to simply draw what I see.
Tumblr media
(Wongsoontorn 2022)
Although my love for ink pens is eternal, the persistent question is why should I continue to use traditional art at all when we have affordable digital mediums that can recreate the look of traditional mediums such as paint and pencils with ease? Well, the simple answer for me is that I still feel that digital art has not been able to recreate the texture of pencil and paint well enough for me to make the complete switch, so I find myself leaning more to digital mediums only to polish mistakes made in my traditional work.
However, looking at the work of Sarah Tanat Jones and Jiranarong has influenced me to take on another approach, in the case of Jones, she does her brush work and inking through traditional mediums, scans them and adds colour to them digitally (May, 2017). I believe with this approach she is able to keep the organic nature of her line work without it being tampered by photoshop. With these methods it seems to me she has been able to achieve the best of both worlds and that is something I would like to try for myself. For years I tried to make the change to digital art but failed, it could never replace my beloved fountain or brush pens but maybe with this approach this might change. So I decided to try this method out for myself.
Tumblr media
(Brown 2022)
I have found with this combination of the two methods that I am able to preserve elements of traditional illustration such as the texture of the pen and paper but also add the vibrancy of colour through photoshop without losing its original texture given by the materials.
In conclusion, this is a method of working that I do wish to continue as I believe it to compliment the traditional elements of my work that I love without it being taken away by digital mediums. With this method I am able to have the best of both worlds without them clashing; the piece is able to remain harmonious.
