Day Thirty
For @the-wip-project #100DaysOfWriting Challenge
Prompt: Did your main characters change as you wrote them? Was that the plan or did they surprise you?
I’ve always thought of drafting as the process of “writing into” characters.
My overall creative workflow for longer pieces starts with backstory and a sketch of the general structure. I do some rapid prototyping through dialogue snippets, just to give myself an idea of how characters are going to operate and their relative personalities.
The challenge for Air Needing Light is that I’m writing an entire team of characters. So a POV character with his four oc teammates, plus one they pick up later.
Each of these ocs has a variably fleshed out backstory, but they all have distinct personalities and voices.
One of my goals in my writing is to show characters growing and changing through their disparate stories. Change is in that sense inevitable.
I’m always pleased when my characters surprise me.
Ranike (breacher and heavy weapons) surprised me by being an exceptional leader and jumping right into command responsibility. That’s what Cirrus trained him to do, and (minor spoiler), when the team leader is incapacitated they’re able to move forward as a group and deal with adversity. Ranike is also ex-Hastatim and the one with the most Blackwatch experience aside from their leader.
Trevia is the other seasoned assaulter in the group, and she and Saren are the ones who bust in doors and work most often and most closely as a pair.
What makes this interesting is that Cirrus asked Trevia which of the hopefuls she wanted, and she picked Saren. They’re the same height and she liked his absolute grit.
Careful what you wish for, Trev!
I think it’s hilarious that she and Saren are at each other’s throats so often. Assuming they don’t kill each other in training, they’re the top hand-to-hand fighters on the team. Their joint methodical, aggressive, take-no-prisoners approach is something Trevia has always wanted in her teammates. Before she qualified for Blackwatch, Trevia was part of the 75th Armiger Legion cracking down on pirates in Council space.
And then there’s Ari! Ari is brilliant and lacks confidence after a rough patch in her assignments. Cirrus picked her up from another team that ended up being a poor fit for her personality. While she excelled in her duties, the other differences were becoming overwhelming.
Ari appreciates that both Trevia and Saren, while aggressive, are all-business and direct. Neither of them backstab each other (it’s always straight to the face!). Ari has done even better with clear objectives, standards, and NOT being the newest on the team. Saren takes all that attention and pressure off her. Ari was another young recruit from the ‘big’ Army who excelled in more or less any qualifications she took. Cirrus grabbed her out of her situation to make sure she got some field seasoning that didn’t end up destroying her career or her confidence.
Which leaves Cirrus, who yes, is named after the cloud formation (sue me). He’s trained so many Blackwatch operators that there is nothing he hasn’t seen or a job he hasn’t done on a team. There’s talk of Aeda (his similarly-ranked junior officer who appears briefly at the beginning of my fic) taking over his position when he retires, and Ranike being promoted and stepping into Aeda’s place for Ravus Three.
You’ll just have to wait to meet Vallen!
All of these characters, including Saren as the POV, constantly surprise me as I continue to get to know them.

Day 9: Spice
@oc-growth-and-development
@turianspeedjunkie
Cornered and outnumbered with sensitive Blackwatch intel in his pocket, Mav cursed hotly. He didn’t know how he’d managed to miss three of the fuckers in all he’d fucking done to clean this shithole up but obviously he fucking had. The minute failure had his mandibles tight to his jaw and a growl rolling low-key in his chest. It was annoying more than anything, inconvenient. He was better armed, armored and trained but they had the better positioning on him. And one, he was sure, was biotic. He could smell that eezo stank and the only reason he hadn’t already been splattered to the four corners of the room was who fucking knew. Mav cursed again and peaked around his cover with his pistol leading.
Two turians and a drell. First time he’d actually gotten eyes on them and he could tell just by looking they weren’t more slavers but regular mercs like he was pretending to be. Fucking Spirits, just what he needed to deal with. And they appeared to be waiting for him to come our of cover rather than trying to flank him. An option for surrender? Sure seemed like it to him. Mav cursed again. He’d really rather not be shot but it was pretty clear all he’d done here and maybe they were in retainer to the slavers he’d just killed. Mav checked the thermal clip.
“I’m fully loaded.” He called around his cover.
“And outnumbered.” One of the turians called back.
“Nothin’ new to me.” Mav laughed and let a little of the well-crafted crazy leak into his vocals. “Sure you noticed, yeah?”
“We did.” A different turian voice, deeper and vaguely displeased.
Mav was starting to think he might have to kill them too. “I’ll take out your biotic first,” He warned. “Got him in my sights now. You wanna bet on how good a marksman I am?”
He gave that a moment to sink in and he really hoped it did. The biotic was a problem he really didn’t want to deal with, that he didn’t have enough leeway to focus on with the other two likely just as dangerous. Mav hoped the mercs didn’t figure that out as quickly as he did and checked the thermal clip again just in case. He could take them if he had to.
“O’course,” He offered when the silence stretched and stretched and they still hadn’t flanked him. “We could just meet in the middle with open hands. You don’t shoot at me and I don’t kill the lot of you. Whatcha say? Seems fair to me, yeah?”
The silence stretched again but finally, he heard the first turian answer him. “I’m not interested if being shot today.” He sighed.
Mav barked a laugh and thanked the Spirits for reasonable men. “Yeah? Me either.” He extended his gun arm out of cover and let them see him pop the thermal clip clear. He waited a beat to see if they were going to double-cross him anyway. “Just to be up front, I’m wired with a killswitch so y’all decide to shoot me anyway, we all go out.”
“Fucking crazy.” One of them muttered.
“Insurance policy.” Mav drawled as he stepped from his cover, hodgepodge armor dented and bloody, as small as he was, he knew he was an unexpected surprise. One of the turians, huge and black plated laughed at the sight of him. The other, pale with icy eyes fluttered his mandibles. Mav couldn’t read the drell at all and there wasn’t any point in guessing. “Well? Y’all think it’s a good day to die or can we all just be on our way?”

N7Month Day 3 – Assassin.  Late because I was streaming Outer Worlds most of today.
Antraxes Mehrkuri (né Partinax) is a turian OC of mine.  He was in the Blackwatch, and during that career, faced down a Krogan battlemaster (that’s where he lost a part of his fringe and got Warped on the back of his head).  He lost his mandible too, but it was replaced by a cybernetic.  He was eventually mentored by a Spectre.
Antraxes is an infiltrator, and as you can see, he’s got a sniper rifle here.  My friend Lou named it – Punitor.  (I based its design off the Phaeston/Krysae and the Inferno sniper rifle; RemTech looks so turian)

hello friend. i am curious about the cowboy turian in your avatar! what is his story? :P
Hey! My avatar is Tenzen “Tulip” Vallokius, the main OC from my fanfic In Bloom on AO3. He ran away from home at 14 after his mothers’ messy divorce and got a job as a xemna hand on a ranch until he was old enough to enter boot camp. After that, he advanced through the military to become a member of the Blackwatch until an unfortunate accident landed him in Huerta.
He’s fairly closed off to people in the beginning of the story and initially is kind of an ass, but then he meets a smol human nurse... love has a way of changing people. 😜
I’m nearly finished with the fic and have really enjoyed writing it. Take a read if you wanna learn Tenzen’s full story and meet his friends and family. I can best describe it as slice of life, alien rom-com with travel to other planets. 😁

OC Fact Swap go (Aaaagh, I love these! ❤️❤️❤️)! Lana is a turian technician and former combat engineer who, despite her rather nice looks and calm, capable demeanor, did not have her first boyfriend until she was well into her late 20s. He’s a special forces soldier and Blackwatch agent-turned-novelist named Kalnius who, as it turns out, is both Lana’s first and last boyfriend - after the war, the two of them marry, settle on a Hierarchy colony, and have a son. He strongly resembles his mother!
Nice, a novelist? I love turian writers/artists/designers, always pleasing to see. They seem good people!
My OC is Detective Arjun Patel, a member of Kolyat’s squad. He is:
The gross squad dad- can and will show you his rash and not flinch about it, and smile while doing it
Good at egging Bats on to do stupid things, and somehow not be there when it goes to shit
In his late 50s, gives no fucks
Will wear a fannypack and fill it with candy. He always has a pile of sweets and snacks, which for a heavily rationed Postwar world is amazing.
Doesn’t drink, but is the first to sign up for a squad bar crawl, if only for the entertainment.
A good shot, both with a pistol and and rifle. To the point where the turian instructor at C-Sec went: “Spirits.” Despite his, ah, reputation, everyone is happy to have him on their six.
Teases and annoys Kolyat about his Drell polytheistic religion, which is rich coming from a Hindu.
Born on earth, signed up for colony immigration. Was in the Alliance for seven years, but left it to help the security of his colony.
Part of the new wave of C-Sec hires Postwar. The rules get relaxed thanks to the hit C-Sec took during the Reaper invasion, and people like Patel can join- even if they don’t have 10 years of service behind them.
Wears a visor while working, mostly watches cooking videos on it.
Married with a 17 year old daughter, his wife works in a food importing service for the Alliance on the Citadel (connected to the 4th point.)
You never know if he’s joking or not with his flirting, or when it comes to weird sex jokes. “The wife and me tried dogging once, but we’re more cat people.”
“I didn’t need to know that, Patel” is a common response from the squad. No one asks how his weekend went anymore.
He has an amazingly creepy smile. Just top notch.

1, 4, 6, and 14 for Serlius from the "Homeland" OC ask thing?
“blast in the past” oc questions
thanks erk i love talking about my garbage blackwatch-turned-spectre boy
1. Where is your OC from?
he was born and raised on edessan, a smaller turian colony world notable for its scenic sea-cliffs and legendarily incomprehensible accents (think the heaviest motherfucking scottish accent you’ve ever heard, and that’s how an edessi native sounds when speaking imperial standard)
he and milotia now live on nimines, a quiet, peaceful little colony not far from parnithas (the second major colony world after digeris) so odds of getting attacked are pretty remote, so they can both unwind from their high-stress jobs and raise their kids in peace.
4. Does their family live back in their homeland?
his mom and step-dad do, but the rest of the family has flown the nest. dad moved to macedyn after the divorce, and serlius’s siblings all got scattered to the four winds during mandatory and ended up settling entire relay leaps away from each other.
6. What’s their family like? Big? Small? Remarkable members?
it’s fairly good-sized, as far as turian families go. his parents slowly fell out of love, plus dad hadn’t really wanted to be a father in the first place but went along with it to make mom happy, so they got a divorce and mom got full custody, and serlius doesn’t really talk to his dad. instead, mom remarried, and he got a cool stepdad who as far as he’s concerned is the dad he should’ve had from the start, because he’s kind and loves mom and loves serlius and his siblings as if they were his own.
he has 3 siblings, 2 bio-brothers (one older, one younger) and 1 step-sister from step-dad’s previous girlfriend (accidental baby, never married, but he stepped up to the plate and they share custody cause they both care deeply about the kid). step-sister’s mom is chill, and still friends with step-dad, and she was enthusiastic about step-dad finding somebody who made him happy and wanted to get to know her daughter’s new siblings, so she’s an unofficial aunt.
and then there’s a shitload of in-laws and nieces and nephews, plus with millie he has five kids, lol
14. What do their family members/friends back home think of your OC now? Are they proud?
oh hell yeah they’re proud
first he made blackwatch, which is an honor in and of itself, but then he got famous for saving his entire squad from an ambush on shanxi, and that got the council’s attention and got his name in for the spectres, and even beyond that he’s wicked intelligent and good at engineering, so the whole family (but especially his parents) are super proud of him and love to brag

I am so used to taking on these large and foreboding writing projects that can tend to become a bit overwhelming while trying to juggle the other projects of mine that have pressing deadlines. SO I decided to start writing these little snip-bit shorts to help explore this turian OC I have had in my thoughts now for a while. Writing this short was so different from what I am used to, but it was a fun and satisfying way to decompress. Looking forward to doing more <3 Hope you enjoy!
For Pascha his days in the hospital just seemed to drag on. Alone and weak, he had become but a shell of his former self… and he hated it. A mere month ago he was getting accepted into Blackwatch but now he knew that every day he remained immobilized in his hospital bed was another day that his dreams were slipping further and further away. The withering came upon him so quickly, but then again that was how the disease worked. There was no predicting it, the cold that spread through his veins weakening his plates and dulling his light color. There was no cure for it, the numbness that took hold over his legs ceasing his control and leaving him stranded in the white stale room that was quickly becoming his own personal hell. It wasn’t the white walls that perturbed him, no, they would change with the passing of cycles from a golden tan to a placid blue. It wasn’t the nurses or the doctors either; they were all more than pleasant. The thing that was driving him close to near madness was the incessant beeping that was staying in tune with the rhythm of his heart. He could never shut it out from his thoughts, even while watching vids it was still in the background picking ever so lightly at his sanity.
The only thing positive about today was that he was at least not as cold as the last. It was about time the shots they had been giving him daily were finally showing some results. Anything that burned through ones veins like that dreaded pale liquid had to be capable of something. So now he was down to two thermal blankets instead of three… what an accomplishment.
At the slow opening of the room’s sliding door Pascha’s mind slipped out of its daydream of small pops of confetti that were beginning to spell out over his blankets “You’re not completely useless yet!”, and back into the reality of the hospital room. The nurses that he expected to see coming in to check on his vitals were this time not alone. No, this time they were pushing in a gurney. Pascha’s mandibles flicked with interest as he watched them glide across the room parking themselves beside the spare bed that had remained unoccupied beside him since his first night there. The figure laying on the gurney was small and pale with a delicate stature. It was a human female with wispy brown hair that tangled to her shoulders. He continued to silently observe as they carefully lifted her up and placed her onto the bed. She looked absolutely lifeless. If it were not for the fact that her head had turned in his direction Pascha would have been convinced she was dead. The young woman’s face was shallow and thinned at her cheeks. It was not until her eyes opened to him that he found his breath caught in his throat. Large hazel eyes that held tones of gold and copper. Spirits, they looked like they were holding the sky of Palaven itself.  Pascha found himself completely absorbed in their tired gaze and unable to look away. Perhaps…. perhaps there was actually two positives about today.

So OC’s?
So ive been talking with @falconwithamossberg about mass effect OC’s, and they inspired me to actually put some of my stuff to paper. Ill put it all under the cut because im not super confident in it, but here it is.
Steven Gabriels -N7 qualified alliance marine, with formal training as a biotic vanguard. Steven was raised on the citadel, and was known for his lax personality when it comes to regulations and danger. He served with geth forces on rannoch near the end of the reaper war where he was promoted to 1st lieutenant, and met his now long time friend Unit 950-XTS. Currently operating under admiral hackett's Styx unit, rooting out remaining cerberus sympathisers
Engineer Unit 950-XTS (X, lightbulb, and nightlight to his friends)- Geth engineering specialist assigned to the combined fleet following the quarian-geth armistice. After gaining full sapiance due to reaper upgrades they have endeavored to understand organics at any given opportunity. Due to being deployed to defend rannoch at the end of the Reaper war Unit 950 was able to survive the crucible blast that destroyed much of his race, due to rannoch unusually large distance from its mass relay. With the war over, and with the geth collective in shambles, Unit 950 chose to continue work with his human comrade (the newly promoted Lt.Gabriels).
Kasiva Andus(or Kas)- Former Decorated Turian Blackwatch Infiltrator and Council specter, Commander Kasiva Andus deserted following the surprise attack by cerberus partisan forces on her ship in the closing days after the reaper war. With her friends and crew dead Andus devoted herself totally towards the total destruction of any and all remaining cerberus forces, ignoring any orders from either the turian government or the council. Some rumors say she is currently working with a System Alliance covert ops team under the command of Fleet Admeral Hackett but these are purely conjecture

Day Thirty-Seven
For @the-wip-project #100DaysOfWriting Challenge
Prompt: Post your favorite line of dialogue that you’ve written recently.
Long story, but this prompt (July 7, 2021) simultaneously shorted out my brain and sent me back to rereading my chapter two draft for Air Needing Light, which saw the light of day approximately six months afterward.
Let’s start with one of my favorite lines of actual dialogue:
“Confirmed, E-5,” Ranike added blandly. “Let it be noted that E-4 is welcome to put her hands on me any time.”
That’s in chapter one. I love it because Ranike as a character is using humor to keep Saren and another squadmate (Trevia) from succumbing to the stress of an awful situation.
The joke relies on a shared history of everyone in their squad assuming Ranike and Trevia are dating or hooking up because 1. they fake-flirt constantly, and 2. they’ve been working together for so long. With turians there’s no prohibition against fraternizing, so they took it a step farther and have mutually decided to troll everyone around them. Ranike cracking a stupid troll joke after they’ve just been shot up takes the stress levels down. I’m proud of this line because it felt like the character suggested it to me, it was 100% his personality to do this, and it was more like recording something that had happened than making it up.
At the time, I’d posted that chapter back in July of 2020!
It seemed absurd to me that my favorite line of “recent” dialogue would have been written a year ago, but it was true.
I shuffled through the Saren/Nihlus one-shot I’d written for Spectre Requistions (This will have no bearing on your evaluation.) and found to my horror that all of my favorite lines there were internal dialogue. Which, to me, didn’t count as spoken words and therefore were right out as examples for this prompt.
While a great deal of my worldbuilding and outlining is built on the backs of rapid-fire conversations between two or more characters, very little of this has so far made it into print in my fics!
I hope I’ll have the opportunity to let more of the background work and drafting surface in the future as actual dialogue, but my first order of business is always letting a story be what it wants to be.
And sometimes that means cutting conversation in favor of implication.

Day 10: Silence
(I’m playing a little fast and loose with this prompt. Mav’s not silent, but where he finds himself is. @oc-growth-and-development
The Edge of Hierarchy Controlled Space: 2177
Mav had roughly twenty minutes left before his air ran out and a total of forty-five minutes before the rescue crew would reach him. He would have had longer if he hadn’t panicked the very moment he’d noticed his tether was cut. If he’d had the sense to notify the Alliance folks he was helping out before he’d panicked well...
“Fuck.” He hissed again. And shit, he should be conserving what air he could. But why? He was going to suffocate before they got to him. What a way to go. Drifting in space, further and further from the hull of an Alliance ship with a human voice in his ear telling him it would be okay, they’d get to him in time. Mav knew they wouldn’t. Oh, they’d recover his body just fine but his Spirit would be long gone by then.
“FUCK!” He screamed it this time, the sound breaking off into a keen of despair inside his helmet.
This wasn’t the way he’d figured he’d die. Hell, he’d been with the Blackwatch just shy of two years now, officially anyway. Mav had figured he’d die when an op went wrong, when he was outnumbered and short on ammo, or when an enemy was just better than he was. Not like this. He’d just stopped along the way home for a distress beacon. The Alliance cruiser dead in the water -so to speak- after a component on the hull got taken out by a debris field. The human engineer onboard too sick to do the repair himself. They were happy to wait for their own people to help but Mav had seen the damage as he’d drawn his own ship alongside and it wasn’t anything he couldn’t fix himself. He hadn’t given thought to the remaining debris.
Stupid. He was so fucking stupid.
“Agent Virim, your oxygen levels are depleting rapidly.” The human voice in his ear warned him, a veiled statement to tell him to calm the fuck down.
“I’m real aware of that, thanks.” Mav shot back.
“The rescue crew is enroute. They’ll reach you soon.”
“Uhuh, sure.” His body, they’d reach his body soon. Mav wanted to scream again. “Look, I’ve gotta... I’ve gotta call my dad, yeah? I’ma cut you off for a bit.”
“...I understand.”
“Yeah. Yeah, I’m thinkin’ you do.” Mav hummed, not that great with the nuances of human voices, but he’d heard something there... He muted that connection to open another one.
Desolas’ line rang and rang and rang. Mav felt like crying along with screaming now. “Fuck,” He said when the voicemail ticked on. “Er... sorry. Listen... I’m comin’ home. Er, soon. Just...Fuck. I’m comin’ home but I’m not, yeah? My... You and Saren will need to carve my totem. I’m... I’m so fuckin’ sorry, dad. I messed up. I messed up and I’m gonna run out of air and... Fuck. I just... You can burn me on Palaven but please, please take my ashes to Carthaan so I can be with my family. And I know, I know, you and Saren are my family and... and I love you both, yeah? But... but my ashes... fuck... my ashes should go to Carthaan and I know I can trust you to do that. I don’t... I don’t have ‘nough time to call Saren, so you can you tell him I love him too? And that I’m sorry for bein’ such a shithead to him all the time? I’d really ‘preciate that.” Mav breathed deep to get his emotions under control. Fuck, that was getting real hard to do. “There’s just so much I want to say and I know I’m gettin’ a chance most folks don’t get and I can’t fuckin’ think of anythin’. I reckon... I reckon I should say thank you for takin’ me in when my parents died. I dunno if I ever have. You didn’t have to do that and you did it anyway and I’m sure... I can’t remember them all that well anymore, but I’m sure they’d be grateful, too. I reckon... I reckon I’ll get to ask them soon, yeah? I have to... I have to go. I don’t want you to hear me... I have to go. I love you, dad.”
Mav hung up, took a moment to get himself under control again, and patched back into the Alliance cruiser. “Hey so, how long’ve I got?”
“A little over five minutes until breathing becomes an issue, Agent Virim.” The human voice told him. “The rescue crew will be there in... in roughly thirty minutes. I’m sorry. They were delayed.”
“O’course.” He snorted. Turians and humans, even so long after the war, still weren’t on the best of terms.
“Do turians pray?” The voice asked.
Mav blinked, again he’d heard something in the undercurrent of that voice he couldn’t really identify. “Some do.” He answered. “I... I don’t. I don’t remember the words anymore. Do humans?”
“I don’t remember our words anymore either.” That voice told him. “If I did, I would for you.”
“You don’t know me though.” Mav said, a little taken aback. Breathing was becoming difficult and he was getting cold.
“I don’t think that matters if I know you personally or not. I know you tried to help us in our hour of need and now we’re failing to help you.”
Mav cleared his throat. “Hey, not anybody’s fault but mine what’s happenin’.” He’d always been on the careless side and now it was really coming back to bite him. “You got any music you can play me?”
“Music?” The voice asked. “Uh, yeah. What do you like?”
“Just play me somethin’ soft, without words if you’ve got it.” Mav answered and in just a few moments the he could hear ethereal instruments through his ear piece. Something that rose and fell, that soothed and spoke to his Spirit. He breathed a little easier and let in consume him until he couldn’t breathe at all.
Mav had always thought, when he finally met his end, that he’d see his parents again. That they would be the Spirits that guided him to whatever afterlife there was. He’d heard stories about it before. And as the stars got brighter around him and he got colder even in that cocoon of music, Mav waited to see them. When everything turned gray at the edges and then black, he waited to see them. Just another minute more he told himself, almost excited for that moment. But when light flooded his vision again, it wasn’t the faces of his parents he only just remembered that greeted him, but a human face. The fuzz along his jaw specked with black and gray, the smile full of flat teeth wide.
“I remembered our words, Agent Virim.” The human said, the same voice that had been in his ear. “I’m glad they reached you.”
He was too weak to speak and too surprised. Mav gave the human his hand and felt five strong fingers lock around his three.

Another APEX mp oc this time of one of my fav classes the turian havoc trooper. Her name is Vorena Adjunus she is definitely not of the standard stock of a 'turian fighter'. Adopted by a merchant human woman and her turian husband and lived most of her childhood on Earth.Vorena is brash, straight to the point, loves to make crude humor, but above all is loyal to those who have earned her trust and respect. Joined the Initiative with her folks after her father a former blackwatch agent killed memebers of a powerful red sand cartel that started hassling and threatened his famiy lives if they didn't pay expensive tribute to them. After getting in contact with old colleagues Mr. Adjunus was able to get himself and his entire famiy to the Andromeda Initiative and be one of security detail on the Nexus Station. Not long after the disastrous events on board the Nexus arrival in Andromeda, Vorena joined APEX to not only help protect her family but make a name for herself in Andromeda and make her parents proud.
